DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. Karen Samis: Leading the Fight Against Cancer with the Walk of Hope

In 1996, Karen Samis moved from Middlebury, Connecticut, to LeRoy, NY. She and husband, Steve, a LeRoy native, married in 1998 and raised three children, Katelyn (26), Stephany (23), and Zachary (17), in this close-knit town. Karen has taught high school math in the City of Rochester for 21 years, but her passion for making a difference extends far beyond the classroom.
Karen is deeply involved in her community, organizing two annual running events that raise funds for local causes. e Tri the Oatka 5K, formerly also a triathlon, and the Jinglin All the Way Festive 5K have supported LeRoy community initiatives including the LeRoy Pool, the Backpack Club, the LeRoy Food Pantry, and a scholarship for graduating high school seniors. e summer’s Walk of Hope, a cancer awareness and fundraising event, holds a special place in her heart.
Karen’s journey with the Walk of Hope began in 2006, when she lost her mother to lung cancer at just 69 years old. Karen says, “My mom was given 3-6 months to live a er her diagnosis. at was a kick to the stomach, but with the advancements we have made with treatment and research in the fight against cancer, she lived another 1½ years.” Karen was determined to fight back against the disease that had taken her mother.
Initially involved in Relay for Life events in other towns, Karen decided to bring the cause closer to home. With the support of the American Lung Association, the LeRoy community, and local

us, the Walk of Hope was born in 2019, with proceeds going directly to Genesee Cancer Assistance (GCA) out of Batavia. Karen says, “Our first event as Walk of Hope raised just over $12,000, and GCA was very appreciative.” Despite COVID cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 events, the Walk of Hope returned in 2022 as a mini walk and raised $8,000, followed by nearly $16,000 in 2023, and almost $14,000 this year.
e Walk of Hope is more than just a fundraiser; it’s a community gathering filled with emotion, inspiration, and support. Each year, the event kicks off with a speech from a cancer survivor. is year, Tricia Doty, who recently received her diagnosis, shared her journey, her challenges, and her commitment to advocacy. e Survivor Lap is a highlight each year, a powerful moment where all participants cheer on cancer survivors as they take a lap together; the survivors then enjoyed
e Walk of Hope featured food sales, a huge basket raffle, and team fundraisers, with local business sponsors contributing to its success. ough Karen says it’s hard to gauge how many people attended each year’s event because people come and go all night, this year featured six official teams and was well-received by all participants. is year’s event also featured a flag football game and live music, which Karen raved about.
Karen’s dedication to the Walk of Hope is driven by a personal mission to keep her mother’s memory alive and to support others in their fight against cancer. She reflects that people don’t usually think much about cancer unless or until they are personally affected by it.
She says, “I will never forget the struggles [my mother] had in her advanced stages, how I felt helpless, and how I held her hand as she passed away and was finally at peace.” rough the Walk of Hope, Karen hopes to inspire others to get involved and to continue the fight. “Together we are stronger than cancer.”

Fosamax Is an Appropriate, Albeit Powerful Medicine for Osteopenia
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 65-year-old, overweight white woman. I recently had a DEXA scan, and based on the results, my general physician prescribed Fosamax for osteopenia.
The first dose created a horrible reaction two days after ingestion, with severe pain in both of my arms, my neck, and my legs. I was in absolute agony for two days, then it cleared up.
With the next dose a week later, I hesitated, but still decided to take it. Two days later, the reaction hit me again, only worse. I could barely walk, and my energy was so low. I spent four days in bed, except to cry when heading to the bathroom. I had not taken my Lasix prescription for those four days, as I could barely make it to the bathroom.
I contacted my doctor, and she discontinued Fosamax. She’s referring me to a rheumatologist. I read that this drug has all my symptoms, plus more, listed under the severe reaction warning. I will not take it again.
Also, a friend told me that this drug is not effective for osteoporosis after more than 20 years of drug tests, and I should not have been prescribed this drug, since I have osteopenia, not osteoporosis. Your thoughts? -- C.W.
ANSWER: Alendronate (Fosamax) is in the class of drugs called bisphosphonates. These are powerful drugs that should not be prescribed lightly. They do have the potential for severe side effects. Severe musculoskeletal pain can occur days or months (sometimes years) after starting the medicine. The Food and Drug Administration has advised prescribers to discuss this possibility with their patients so that the drug can be stopped immediately if it occurs. There are other options available if the person really needs treatment.
Your friend is half right. Powerful drugs like Fosamax are usually not indicated in people who have low bone mass (osteopenia) without osteoporosis. However, a history of a fragility fracture (breaking a bone from minor trauma that isn’t expected to cause a fracture) can make the diagnosis of osteoporosis, even if the bone density isn’t in the usual osteoporotic range. A person can have a high risk of fractures for other reasons, and a clinical tool called the FRAX score helps clinicians identify those who might benefit from treatment.
But your friend is also half wrong. When used appropriately, Fosamax and other bisphosphonate drugs are effective at reducing the risk of fractures. A vertebral body fracture can cause years of pain and be avoided easily, while a hip fracture can be devastating. So, there are very good reasons to prescribe these medicines.

Exercise regularly: Physical activity can lower estrogen levels, reduce levels of insulin in the blood, help a person lose weight, and reduce inflammation - all factors that contribute to the formation of cancer. Experts recommend 150 minutes of moderateintensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise a week.
MAKING CROWN ADJUSTMENTS FOR A PERFECT FIT
Finally, let me warn readers against complacence in treatment with these drugs. They may be appropriately prescribed for a high-risk person, but most people should not stay on this drug forever. Follow-up DEXA scans should guide therapy, and after three to five years, a conscious decision should be made whether to continue therapy.

Many people find it impossible to think about summer without conjuring visions of spending endless hours outdoors from morning until evening, whether beachside, on the open water or even floating in a backyard pool. Although a certain measure of sun exposure is required for some natural functions of the body, it’s well documented that too much time in the sun can be hazardous to one’s health. That’s why summer frolickers need to exercise considerable caution each time they step outside. Taking sunburn for granted can be a big mistake. Many people wouldn’t risk burns from a hot stove or open fire, but they won’t think twice about being unprotected under the very hot rays of the sun. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than one-third of adults and nearly 70 percent of children admit to suffering from sunburn within the past year. Depending on the intensity of the sun and the amount of time spent outside, sunburn can be a first- or second-degree burn. In first-degree burns, damage affects the topmost layer of skin. However, sunburn can even affect deeper layers and cause blistering in addition to redness and pain.
Sunburn also can cause some irreparable damage that goes unseen. According to WebMD, ultraviolet light from the sun can alter DNA, prematurely aging skin or even contributing to skin cancers. It can take years before symptoms become noticeable. Therefore, it is best for people of all ages to exercise caution when spending time in the sun.
Sunburn is one of the most easily prevented summertime ailments. It’s also important to note that sunburns are not just limited to the hot weather or when it is sunny outside. Ultraviolet damage can occur at any time of the year, and also from artificial UV sources, such as tanning beds. Preventing sunburn is simple.

1. Cook orzo according to package directions, omitting salt if desired. Drain and rinse under cold water; drain again.
2. Meanwhile, cut thin slice off tops of tomatoes; reserve tops. Using spoon, carefully scoop out seeds and pulp; reserve for another use.
3. Gently toss together crabmeat, olives, feta, dill, vinegar, salt, and pepper in medium bowl. Spoon crabmeat mixture evenly into tomato shells and cover with reserved tomato tops.
Cook’s note: Scoop the seeds and pulp from the tomatoes into a storage container. Cover and freeze up to 4 months and toss them into a soup or stew.

This past Sunday my husband and I visited a local flea market. Several people saw me struggling to maneuver his wheelchair over the gravel and offered to help. One kind young man pushed him all the way back to the car when he saw that we were ready to leave. It is comforting to know that people can be so compassionate. Went to a town park concert. Kids running around. Most enjoying the music. Then there were those who have to talk louder than the music with every other word is the “f” word. What’s wrong with these people? Did they even graduate elementary school? Did their parents teach them any class? One mother, who I applaud, went over and asked them to stop cursing around her child. That lasted only about five minutes. She moved to another spot. Stay home if you’re not there for the music and keep your garbage mouth among yourselves. We don’t want to hear you!
Let’s Fix This Accident Waiting to Happen I see so many people walking and biking on the roads at night while wearing dark colored clothing. This is an accident waiting to happen. If people don’t realize it, they need to be educated about how dangerous it is to walk on roads without sidewalks without reflective gear or bright clothing! Local colleges should be giving out reflective gear instead of pens or other knickknacks if they aren’t already.

On windows and windshields, drivers may be able to gently remove dried sap with a razor blade. However, use cleaning products on more delicate paint. Automotive stores sell speciality sap and tar cleaners. Otherwise, you can try rubbing alcohol. It may take a few attempts to remove sap entirely.

What tips do you have so I do a good job? -- Austin in Portland, Maine
DEAR AUSTIN: What a great idea! You can try out pet sitting and see if you like it, and your dad is there to give support and advice. Here are a few tips:
-- Bring a notebook and pen with you to every pet sitting visit.
-- Talk to the pet owner before they leave. Get all of the pet's health information. Find out what time they need to be fed and any medications they need to take. Get their veterinarian's number and any special instructions. Find out where the food, treats and leash are stored. (Write this all in the notebook!)
-- Keep to the agreed-upon time to visit and/or walk the pet. It's important for the pet to stay on a regular schedule, and it builds trust with your customer.
-- Do not feed the pet any food or treats not provided (or specified) by the owner.
-- Contact the owner if you have additional questions or if an emergency arises.
ese are just the basics. As you build your pet-sitting empire, you will encounter different situations and will learn the best ways to respond. Your parents can help, and so can that trusty notebook!
