Practice: Daniel Post Senning, the great-grandson of etiquette expert Emily Post and co-author of “Emily Post’s Etiquette, 18th edition,” says parents can practice dining out by replicating the experience (as much as possible) at home. Ask the children to use inside voices and exhibit proper behavior at the dinner table. Remove children from the table if they misbehave and try again another time. Parents also can acclimate their youngsters to dining out by gradually working their way up to more formal restaurants. Start by dining out at a place where table behavior or noise may be more tolerable, such as a fast-food restaurant, before moving on to a casual restaurant and then a nicer restaurant when kids can handle it.

Many students will attend various schools before moving on to college, and therefore they must learn how to adjust to new schools. While many students attend elementary school together for years, students may not know their classmates once they make it to middle school, which tends to boast larger student bodies than elementary schools. That’s because many middle schools’ student bodies are a combination of several elementary schools. Making the transition from elementary school to middle school or junior high can spark anxiety in students, but that does not have to be.

Consumers also can improve their credit scores by doing the following:
Once credit reports are obtained, consumers can work to correct any mistakes or inconsistencies. Some of these may be simple fixes, while others may take some effort. A 2012 study from the Federal Trade Commission found that one in five consumers had an error on at least one of their credit reports.
It is common for consumers to spend months researching and saving for new vehicles. But many auto buyers do not put the same amount of effort into finding auto loans. That’s unfortunate, as Consumer Reports notes that those who do not have financing arranged before visiting a dealership may not get the best loan terms.

Prior to buying a vehicle, drivers should give consideration to how they appear in the eyes of creditors. Few if any people pay for cars or trucks in full at the time of purchase. As a result, it’s key for buyers to make themselves as attractive as possible in lenders’ eyes.
• Obtain a mix of different credit sources, such as those in the form of credit cards, furniture financing, home ownership, and auto loans. This, too, can raise credit scores and make borrowers appear less risky.
• Reduce debt by paying off balances on credit cards or other loans.
Consumers’ FICO® scores are the type of credit score most often used to make lending decisions. FICO scores range between 300 and 850. The higher the score, the lower the risk to lenders. However, lenders do not necessarily use the same formula to assess risk.
BECOMING MORE ATTRACTIVE TO AUTO LENDERS
The first step potential borrowers should take is figuring out what their credit score is, and what information is on their credit report. For those who haven’t done so already, they can request a free copy of their credit reports from the three major credit monitoring bureaus.
Prevent summer sun and heat damage to your car Wax more often. Try to wax your car after every wash. A good layer of wax can protect a vehicle’s paint from dirt, debris and the sun’s rays. Remember, premium waxes do not necessarily work any better than less expensive waxes, but the type of formulation (liquid, paste and spray) may affect application and how long each application lasts. Consumer Reports found that paste waxes are easier to use than liquid waxes, though liquid waxes cleaned the best. Spray waxes were the easiest to use and left the fewest stains on plastic parts, but they didn’t last as long as other waxes.
• Make payments on time, as payment history can have the greatest effect on a bad credit score, according to Credit.com.
Improving credit score: Lenders use consumers’ credit scores to determine how likely they will be to honor the terms of a potential loan.
• Keep old credit accounts open, as they establish a strong credit history. Try not to open too many new accounts in a short period of Borrowerstime.with

Some people develop diarrhea with stress. Other people are more likely to drink alcohol while traveling, and excess alcohol can cause diarrhea. I can’t explain why drinking bottled or distilled water seems to prevent the problem. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Different Drinking Water is Not the Cause of Diarrhea
Advanced Lower Extremity Wound Care Diabetic Care, Limb/Foot Salvage & Foot Surgery/Trauma
DEAR DR. ROACH: While reading one of your recent columns, I learned that all water, except for distilled, contains electrolytes. I wondered if there are differences in the amount of each electrolyte in drinking water in different places in Canada, and if so, whether that might explain why I experience cramping and diarrhea while visiting another place? Through experience, I have been able to avoid the problem by drinking only bottled mineral or distilled water when I am away from my home. In cases where I have been on lengthier holidays, after I lived through the initial distress, eventually, my gastric system calmed down and seemed to accommodate the new source of water. I felt that my malady might be some sort of domestic version of Montezuma’s Revenge, but the analogy is inapt because the water I have consumed away from my home was not contaminated. -- M.T. ANSWER: “Montezuma’s Revenge” is an (insulting) term for traveler’s diarrhea, specifically in reference to Mexico, where drinking water may be contaminated with bacteria. I don’t think the answer to your diarrhea while traveling is in the water. The quality of drinking water in nearly all of Canada and the United States is outstanding, and bacterial contamination is exceedingly rare, as you say. Similarly, electrolytes are kept at very low levels in most parts of North America, although some water softeners do put a fair bit of sodium into the water in exchange for other ions, such as magnesium and calcium. Still, none of these trace minerals are likely to cause diarrhea.

Magnesium: The Mayo Clinic reports that magnesium supports muscle and nerve function and energy production. Individuals with chronically low levels of magnesium could be at increased risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis. The NIH notes that magnesium is widely distributed in plants. That means it can be found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including spinach, edamame, black beans, bananas, and broccoli.Magnesium levels vary significantly in these foods,so anyone concerned about magnesium deficiency can speak with their physicians about the best and healthiest ways to include more in their diets.

SAFE WAYS TO DEAL WITH SINUS PRESSURE
We Care About Your Smiles
In order to combat sinus congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep the sinuses healthy.

The key to preventing infection is to only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections.
Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drug-free alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT DENTAL CLEANINGS
by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
There are more ways to improve your smile than whitening your teeth or getting implants. In addition to daily brushing and flossing and regular dental checkups, there are several treatment options to improve your smile. Crowns can cover discolored or misshapen teeth as well as fix broken teeth and protect weak ones. Veneers are thin shells designed to cover the fronts of teeth and look just like natural teeth. Bonding can also create the look and feel of healthy teeth. By “bonding” natural materials to enamel and dentin, a dentist can improve both the appearance and structure of teeth. Orthodontic work isn’t just for kids anymore and provides an option for fixing the look of crooked or crowded teeth.
Patients.
Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages.
If you’ve looked at yourself in the mirror and wished you liked your smile more, why not make a change

Consult with your dentist. Dental hygienists and dentists are experienced at cleaning teeth that have braces. Typical visits for routine cleanings will not be much different than visits without braces. The staff will take X-rays and conduct a thorough examination of the teeth. Hygienists know how to manipulate cleaning tools around braces to clean effectively. Very often, cavities can be filled and even root canals performed with braces on teeth, so there’s no need to worry. Should braces be in the way, the dentist can work with the orthodontist and have a bracket temporarily removed and replaced to facilitate treatment.
When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration, and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difficult. This is when problems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur.
Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use pre-packaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion. However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe.
Sinuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull. They are located in the low-center of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses.

The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications.
“AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have.

HOW an appropriate extension cord. String lights above outdoor living spaces like decks and patios can create a warm, relaxing nighttime vibe. Those lights need to be plugged in, which increases the risk for electrical accidents. When utilizing an extension cord outdoors, never use a cord designated for indoor use. Outdoor extension cords are better insulated than cords made for indoor use. That insulation provides better protection against the elements, including sunlight, changes in temperature and moisture. When using an extension cord outdoors, make sure the cord is secured and not left lying on a deck or patio where it can easily become a tripping hazard.

(NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions.
Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack.

DEAR PAW’S corner: A couple of weeks ago, my family took a trip to a nearby pond. Our dog Jessup splashed and played along with us. On the drive home, Jessup began to look ill and started drooling. When we reached home he got very ill and started having seizures. I rushed him to the emergency vet, where they treated him. e vet said that he may have ingested blue-green algae, and that it is very common in ponds and still water at this time of year. Please let your readers know about this risk! Jessup is recovering and will probably be OK, but the vet said this can be fatal.

-- Sherry in Dallas, Texas Dear Sherry: I’m so glad to hear that Jessup is doing well! Yes, blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, is toxic and can make a dog very ill if it’s ingested. It exists in many bodies of freshwater and grows rapidly when the water temperature is over 75 degrees -- so it’s at its highest levels, and most dangerous, in the hot summer months.

Look carefully at the water in the lake or pond before letting your dog near it. If you see a lot of peagreen growth and a slimy look to the water at the shoreline, don’t let your dog jump in. Even if the water looks OK, check to see if any “no swimming” signs are posted nearby. You also can check your local county or city website or parks department for a water quality report. And even if the water is OK for people and dogs to swim in, be sure to rinse your dog’s coat in clean tap water as soon as possible a er swim-

For an additional source of help, consider investing in two sessions with an exercise coach who specializes in seniors. ings they’ll be able to teach you include how to do each exercise and how to use hand weights without straining joints. At the second session you’ll be able to ask any question that came up and verify that you’re still doing the movements correctly.
For additional information on senior exercise from the CDC, take a look at www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/basics/older_adults/index.htm.
Strength training is one of the best things we can do for ourselves to maintain strong bones, increase muscle strength and improve mobility, balance and coordination. ose things in turn reduce our risk of falling and help maintain our independence. Many of us, however, don’t know where and how to start.
If you can’t download the book, call the CDC at 800-232-4636, and it can be mailed to you. Start using the book (either reading it online or having it sent to you) by completing the test to see if you need to run the program by your doctor, especially if you’ve had any surgeries for your knee or hip. Your second step should be to read the section on getting motivated, because yes, some of us need coaxing to start exercising.

6. Remove and destroy affected plants throughout the season and in the fall. Place in trash bags, NEVER in the compost.
Home vegetable gardeners love the taste of tomatoes grown in our own gardens, but growing tomatoes also causes us many headaches since they are subject to a variety of problems. Very common in our area are fungal diseases – early blight, late blight, Septoria leaf spot, Verticillium wilt, and Fusarium wilt, to name a few. The wilt described does sound like a bacterial wilt, but of course, that can only be determined by examining the plant, especially the interior of the stem. Bacterial wilt is a disease of tomato and other plants in the nightshade family (Solaneceous). The disease occurs predominately in the wet tropics and subtropics but also has been found in some parts of the northeast. It is caused by a soil-borne bacterium and inhabits the roots, entering at points of injury caused by tools and/or pests in the soil. It can survive for long periods in the soil. In the future,to prevent bacterial wilt, and other diseases as well, here are some good practices for growing tomatoes:

2. Choose resistant varieties. They are generally marked as to their resistance. Be aware, heirloom varieties are delicious but generally not disease resistant.
In small rooms, homeowners may want to find another way to utilize vertical space. A loft bed, which raises the bed up to a level where it might be on the top bunk of a bunk bed, will free up plenty of storage space beneath the bed. This can be turned into a floor closet.
Linda Phillips, Master Gardener Volunteer,CCELivingstonCounty
3. Plant tomatoes in well-drained soil with a balanced pH (usually about 7 in our area). Add some compost to enrich the soil. I am partial to Bessie’s Best composted cow manure, which comes from a farm in Gainesville,NY,and can be found at J&A Farm Market in Avon.
1. Rotate crops. Bacterial wilt and fungal diseases may overwinter in the soil. Do not plant tomatoes in the same area again for about 3 years. If space is limited, consider planting a few in containers.
9. Never give up! Home grown tomatoes are one of the joys of summer and well worth the effort.

Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features.

Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.
Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. Dogs at Concerts in the Park
My family and I love going to the summer concerts in the park. For safety reasons, most of the villages do not allow dogs, but when we go to [certain] evening concerts, there are always people who have to bring their dogs. Last week, there were a couple of dogs that were barking and snarling at each other. This frightened my children enough that they wanted to go home. Then, every time a dog would walk by, other dogs would set them off all over again. This is very annoying. Please, people, leave your pets at home so others can enjoy the concerts. In America To the rant titled "Private Property: indeed." It is nice that in Scotland, there is mutual respect of property. However, we live in America where there is not mutual respect of property. I support the original rant. The family should've asked for permission. How hard is it to ask a simple question? If anyone in the family had been injured while on that person's property, they would not have hesitated to sue the landowner. In America, we don't respect each other, our laws, or our government. "Personal boundaries" have not become ridiculous in this country. What is ridiculous is your lack of respect. If you like the way they do things in Scotland, please consider relocating there.
Thanks, Maxine! Maxine, you are the best! Thank you for the healthy snack. - Jill Here’s to a new school year! Thanks in advance to all those who put our children first when we entrust them to your care this school year. Teachers, administrators, nurses, counselors, coaches, aides, cafeteria monitors, bus drivers, buildings & grounds personal, crossing guards (and anyone we missed.) To all those driver’s out there, please watch for stopped buses and walkers as the new school year begins. Thank you! Thanks to my mother-in-law for coming through in the clutch and watching our oldest son this week. Couldn’t do it without you!

According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER
According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises.

Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summertime fun and a day when thousands of people gather across the country for their final big barbecue blowouts. Labor Day has evolved into a holiday about relaxing with friends and family, and that has led to its origins getting somewhat lost in the celebratory shuffle. Created by the labor movement in the late 19th century, Labor Day was established to highlight the achievements of American workers, both from a social and an economic perspective.
