DID YOU KNOW?

Unfortunately, many people now feel that COVID isn’t a deadly threat anymore, but if you’re an older adult or a person with chronic or disabling conditions, getting COVID can still kill you. Getting Vaccinated was de nitely the right decision for me.“

David Wantuck - Amherst, NY

“Everyone is di erent. If you catch COVID, there’s no way to predict how severe it might be. It can kill you or you can have no symptoms at all. That’s why I got Vaccinated.”

Krystle Babbs - Bu alo, NY

If you are listening to all the misinformation out there, listen to this. The COVID vaccine is still the safest and most e ective way of reducing risk of a serious illness or death. Just ask your doctor, I did.”

Anyone with diabetes can develop diabetic eye disease, though some groups are more affected than others.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, African Americans, American Indians and Alaska Natives, Hispanics/Latinos, Pacific Islanders, and older adults are at an elevated risk of diabetes-related vision loss or blindness. It’s also important that pregnant women with diabetes recognize the risk of eye problems.

The NIDDK reports that women with diabetes can develop eye problems very quickly during pregnancy. Women who have already been diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, the most commonly diagnosed diabetic eye disease, may have their condition worsen during pregnancy. The link between diabetic eye disease and pregnancy has to do with the changes a woman’s body undergoes when she is with child. The NIDDK notes that changes the body undergoes to support a growing baby can put stress on the blood vessels in the eyes. Damaged blood vessels can harm the retina, thereby increasing a woman’s risk for diabetic retinopathy.

Individuals with diabetes who are at a heightened risk for diabetic eye disease, including pregnant women, can speak to their physicians about what they can do to protect their vision in the short- and long-term.

Shredded leaves can make for a great amendment to fertilizer for garden beds and even the lawn. Leaves lying on the grass can be mulched into small pieces with a mulching mower so they don’t choke the blades of grass. Leaves also can be broken down with a string trimmer, a leaf blower that has a vacuum function or a commercial shredder/chipper. Add the shredded leaves to a compost pile or use them to fill container plants before adding regular potting soil.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL

Babies born in fall are more likely to see the century mark. Researchers at the University of Chicago studied more than 1,500 centenarians born in the United States between 1880 and 1895. They then compared birth and death information with those centenarians’ siblings and spouses so they could compare their early environment and genetic background and their adult environment. Their research found that most centenarians were born between September and November.

OUR APPROACH

• Habitat for Humanity takes a community approach to provide a ordable housing for building new homes and renovating existing ones. Sweat equity is at the heart of this approach, where our homeowner partners provide labor that contributes to keeping the costs down and also o ers the community at large an opportunity to work with the homeowners.

• When a town has a number of active board members, it increases the visibility of Habitat in that town, which increases the likelihood of future projects there, as well as brings new, innovative ideas about how to realize those projects.

OUR IDEAL BOARD MEMBER

• As with any nonpro t board, Habitat seeks board members that can contribute in various ways.

• We have a need for board members with construction background or administrative experience, as we need both Construction Committee support and a future Secretary.

• Board member connections to donors, builders, and volunteers all help to facilitate the Habitat mission.

NEXT STEPS

• All potential board members are interviewed and their membership voted on by the existing Board.

Weed whack plant as close to the ground as possible. Install cardboard or heavy construction paper over the area, overlapping by 4-6”. Be sure to cover all the area. If the bed is next to a structure, be sure the paper goes up on the structure 3”. Then install 3” to 4” of hardwood mulch. Be sure not to move the paper and that you have it covered by that depth. This is the most effect way that I have used to get unwanted plants

I have a small raised tomato garden. The tomatoes are good. The problem is that something is making small holes after the tomato is ripe. We ruled out deer. We sprayed with a powder. It only happens during the night. We never saw any bugs, etc.Any ideas..?

It is hard to know for certain, but my thought is Tomato pinworm: young yellowish-gray larva only a few

millimeters long make blotch mines in leaves; older yellow, green, or gray, purple-spotted larva up to 8 mm long fold leaves and web them together or bore into stems, buds, and fruit; leaving fruits with pinholes and discolored blotches. It is also possible that it is something else that might not typically feed on tomatoes, too. Your vigilant observation and inspection of the fruit might find more evidence which may be helpful.

Scammers and the Omicron Vaccine

e latest scam against seniors appears to have started the very day the new Covid omicron vaccine was announced as being approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

e call I received promised to help me get to the front of the line ... ahead of all the people who were going to be eligible at the same time. All I had to do was provide my banking information or Medicare card number so they could “hold a place” for me in the appointments.

A er all, the scammer said, millions of people were going to be rushing to get the vaccine. I didn’t want to be le out, did I?

I had a few minutes, so I decided to test the scammer’s actual knowledge about the vaccine. He was fuzzy on the information and stumbled to answer, sometimes making it up as he went.

Here are some facts to remember should you get one of these vaccine scam

ecalls:truth is that not everyone is going to be eligible. ose who haven’t had any previous Covid vaccines cannot get the omicron vaccine until they take the other ones. en you have to wait two months before getting the new one.

e P zer booster will be for those age 12 and over, with the Moderna for those 18 and up. ey don’t know yet about children younger than those ages.

No, at this point there haven’t been any clinical trials about how well the omicron version works. Mice, yes, but people, no. (Moderna and P zer both did mini-tests of 600 people each.)

e omicron vaccine will cover not only the omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants, but also the original Covid as well. It’s called a “bivalent” vaccine because it covers both.

But the big thing to remember: ese scammers don’t want to help you get the new omicron booster. ey only want your personal information.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to KidsHealth.org, more than one-third of child injuries and deaths happen at home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that most incidents at home occur where there is water, such as in the bathroom or kitchen; heat or flame, like in the kitchen or around the grill; toxic substances, like those found in medicine cabinets or beneath kitchen sinks; and in places where kids can fall, such as on staircases.

Chili 5th Annual Ride Against Suicide Poker Run Supports Local Veterans

It is a tragic yet widely recognized fact that our brave military service men and women are at higher risk than the general United States population for committing suicide. What is not always realized is just how much higher this risk really is. e reality is heartbreaking.

Data from a current study focusing on Veterans serving between 20012007 in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars revealed a “signi cantly higher suicide risk” among both deployed and non-deployed Veterans when compared to the United State general population. Deployed Veterans have a 41% higher suicide risk, and non-deployed Veterans face a staggering 61% higher suicide risk respectively.

It is important to remember that, while the study did nd that these Veterans were at highest risk during their rst three years a er leaving the service, Veterans of all wars and all ages remain at a heightened risk for suicide. In fact, according to the USO, “In 2021, research found that 30,177 active duty personnel and Veterans who served in the military a er 9/11 have died by suicide - compared to the 7,057 service members killed in combatinthosesame20years. atis, militarysuicideratesarefourtimes higher than deaths that occurred during military operations.”

Many organizations are nding ways to help in light of this crisis among a population that has already given so much. On Saturday, On Saturday, September 17th, the VA Finger Lakes Healthcare System partnered with Legion,atSuicide.Rideforcommunityagenciesthe5thAnnualAgainstBeginningtheChiliAmericantheRidewas

held in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention of Western New York, and the American Legions and VFWs in Chili, Livonia, Canandaigua, Ontario, and Palmyra.

“We would also like to thank the American Legion chapters and the VFW chapter at which we stopped along our run,” said Kelly Mohrman, Suicide Prevention Coordinator Lead for the VA Finger Lakes Healthcare System. “ is is a community, and we’d also like to thank Heintzelman’s BBQ Pit which provided delicious food for our riders.”

It could not have been a more beautiful day for a motorcycle run with sunny, cloud-dotted blue skies and temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s. Riders showed up for a good turnout. “We had 57 motorcycles and about 73 people,” said Mohrman, praising rider dedication. “Even last year

when it was pouring rain, six people on bikes still showed up along with more than 60 people.”

Proceeds from the Ride Against Suicide were donated to the local chapter of e American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and e American Legion Riders Emergency Support Fund of Wayne County. “We raised $1,720 to be split between the two organizations,” explained Mohrman. “All the funds stay local, too.”

RAVES

A Big Thank You!

A big thanks to the team at The "Original" Red Osier Landmark Restaurant in Stafford for serving a delicious lunch to our members this past Friday in celebration of our awesome staff and the retirement of one of our coworkers. Tender roast beef and juicy chicken sandwiches were accompanied by generous servings of scratch-made pasta salad and potato salad. Everything was fresh, tasty, and cheerfully served with a good time had by all. Thank you!

Very Happy

I would truly like to thank the people that have been working on Route 63 and our town of Dansville. They are doing a wonderful job. It is hot and dirty work, but it has been long overdue. Again, thank you all!

Forever Grateful

On August 24th, I choked on food while eating lunch and lost my breath. I managed to call 911, and the gentleman operator stayed on the line with me, calming and reassuring me, until the EMT Team from Fishers Fire Company arrived at my home. The scare was unbelievably frightening and traumatic. The EMT Team was extremely professional and very kind. Thankfully, my emergency had a happy ending. We are so very fortunate to have these two agencies in our community. I am forever indebted to to them.

Shoutout to NYSDOT

A huge shoutout to the NYSDOT on Union Street in Spencerport for grinding down a gigantic bump in front of our house that caused empty tractor trailers to make the sound of a bomb going off in our neighborhood! Now we won't be awakened in the middle of the day or night! Thank You! David T. - Churchville

HOMETOWN PHOTOS

Dress Code

My husband took our car to have its free annual undercoat checkup. As always, the manger asked if he would like to have any other services done to the car as well, such as detailing, cleaning, etc. My husband replied, “No thank you, just the undercoat checked.” The manager said to my husband, “I didn’t think you would by the way you are dressed!” This was said to my hardworking husband because he had on his blue-collar work clothes. Other rude comments were made about the age of our vehicle. I didn’t know you had to wear a suit and tie to get respect [there]. I find this incident unprofessional, inappropriate, and disrespectful! Someone has to do the dirty work. By the way, my husband cleans up well!

Country Roads

To whomever ranted about their road: I used to live on a country road, and almost every year, they would grade the road because of potholes, then roll it. Then, when it rained, the road was a mud hole. Why can’t it be fixed correctly? People pay enough in taxes to keep them maintained. It isn’t a long road.

Volume on High

Has anyone besides my wife and I noticed that the volume at concerts and movie theaters has become so loud that ithey are unpleasant to attend? The movie we went to see was so loud that, even with earplugs, my wife was forced to leave the theater. And when did the bass become a solo instrument? I went to the concert to hear the star, not the bass. Sound mixers as a group must be deaf from attending too many concerts.

That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully. A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC

Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency.

MILLWORK CAN ADD APPEAL & A CLASSIC FEEL

Used for both decoration and to increase the functionality of buildings, millwork comes in various types. Generally, millwork is fabricated in two ways. Stock millwork tends to be mass-produced commercial items. These low-cost items are interchangeable and may be widely available at retailers, including home improvement centers. Custom millwork is a product that is custom designed and produced for individuals and special building projects. Sometimes referred to as “architectural millwork,” these pieces may be more ornate and made-to-order. Homeowners who want to match a focal point of a home or an existing style often turn to custom millwork.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Hiatal Hernia Is Not Correlated to Asthma Medication

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 80 years old, still work full-time and have generally good health, except for adult-onset asthma. Advair 250/50 was prescribed for me over 10 years ago, and I’ve been taking it regularly each morning, thoroughly rinsing each time to prevent thrush. About five years ago, I developed an abdominal hernia just below my waistline. My primary physician referred me to a general surgeon, who did a very thorough exam, including an MRI from the jaw down. He discovered an esophageal hernia in addition to the abdominal hernia, and told me that a specialist would have to perform the double surgery. His advice was to avoid surgery, leaving it as a last resort. He prescribed famotidine twice daily to preclude acid reflux. That generally works, but not always.

My question is, does Advair 250/50 cause or contribute to an esophageal hernia? -- D.A.A.

ANSWER: A hiatal hernia (“hiatus” means “gap” in Latin), also called an esophageal or paraoesophageal hernia, is when the hole in the diaphragm through which the esophagus passes is larger than normal, so other abdominal organs, especially the stomach, can slide through the hole from the abdomen into the Mostchest.hiatal

hernias are thought to be congenital, meaning you were born with the propensity to have a larger-than-needed hole in the diaphragm. Most people with this condition have no symptoms and do not need treatment. The unusual person with symptoms from a sliding hiatal hernia is usually treated medically. Like you, they are prescribed famotidine, which reduces stomach acid. In the rare case when the paraoesophageal hernia is so large that the stomach gets stuck inside the chest, or when other abdominal organs enter the chest, a person may require surgery.

Neither asthma nor Advair, a combination of an inhaled steroid (fluticasone) and a long-acting beta agonist (salmeterol), is related to hiatal hernias.

UNDERSTANDING CATARACTS

Cataract diagnosis and treatment: An eye doctor will examine dilated eyes to diagnose cataracts. A slit-lamp microscope can make it easier to spot abnormalities, states theAOA.

The eye professional will consider age and the severity of cataracts to determine a treatment strategy. Early loss of vision due to cataracts may be mitigated by stronger lighting or a change in eyeglasses or contact lens prescription.

Johns Hopkins says cataract surgery is one of the most common eye surgeries. It is safe and effective. An ophthalmologist will remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial, clear lens.If cataracts are present in both eyes, each surgery will be performed separately.Apossible complication of cataract surgery is when a part of the natural lens that is not taken out during surgery becomes cloudy and blurs eyesight. This can be remedied with a laser treatment.

THE FACTS OF PLAQUE

Dental plaque is constantlyforming on our teeth. Simply put, plaque is the bacteria that grow in our mouth daily. Whenever we eatand drink, the bacteria mix with sugary and starchy substancesto form acids that damage teeth. These acids create a layer ofbiofilm that forms on teeth as plaque. If plaque is not removed regularly, it begins to harden into tartar. Although tartar damagesteeth and gums and is difficult to remove, the good news is thatplaque is easy to remove beforeit hardens into tartar. The best practices to control plaque and prevent tartar are brushing teethat least twice a day, flossing daily, and having teeth professionally cleaned twice a year.

Avoiding plaque buildup and it’s resultant gum disease and achieving maximum dental

hygiene success are not all thatdifficult. Almost everyone can accomplish both with a modestamount of time invested daily. Keeping up with home dental care as well as scheduling periodic cleanings and wellness exams are two important stepstoward accomplishing thegoal of a healthy mouth. Forfull-service dental care for all members of your family, pleasecall 585.343.4246 for an appointment at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. Our office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre.

P.S. It only takes about 24 hoursfor plaque to begin hardening into tartar.

Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love — that makes life and nature harmonize. The birds are consulting about their migrations, the trees are putting on the hectic or the pallid hues of decay, and begin to strew the ground, that one’s very footsteps may not disturb the repose of earth and air, while they give us a scent that is a pefect anodyne to the restless spirit. Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.

Most owners keep it right next to them as they trim their pets’ nails, so it can be applied immediately.

In fact, styptic powder should be an essential part of something every pet owner has: an easy-toaccess rst-aid kit for their pets. You don’t have to buy a complete kit; you can assemble a few key items and store them in a tightly sealed plastic container.

In addition to the powder, a pet rst-aid kit should have gauze and tape, a small bar of soap, a disinfectant like hydrogen peroxide or alcohol wipes, Benadryl (plain, with no ibuprofen or acetaminophen), cotton balls and disinfecting hand wash (for you). Its main purpose is to treat small cuts and scrapes, but you can add other items that you think are essential, including the veterinarian’s phone number, extra identi cation tags, copies of your pet’s shot records and a spare leash. HOW TO BUILD A STRONGNETWORKPROFESSIONAL

Reconnect with your college or university. Another great way to build a professional network is to reconnect with your college or university. When meeting people affiliated with your alma mater, the ice has already been broken in a sense, as the school is essentially a built-in connection. You also won’t have to worry about the awkwardness that might come when meeting a professional contact with whom you have less in common. Alumni organizations and local chapters can introduce you to people who earned your degree at your school, and many people love to help out their fellow alumni.

WOMEN AND STEM

The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial

U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

Then summer fades and passes, and October comes. Will smell smoke then, and feel an unsuspected sharpness, a thrill of nervous, swift elation, a sense of sadness and departure.

Vegan cuisine that packs a flavorful punch

People who do not adhere to vegan diets may assume that such diets are void of taste. But vegan foods can be just as flavorful as more traditional alternatives.

Such is the case with the following recipe for “Roasted Baby Parsnips with Sherry-Maple Glaze and Chanterelles” from Tal Ronnen’s “Crossroads: Extraordinary Recipes from the Restaurant That Is Reinventing Vegan Cuisine” (Artisan). When roasted, parsnips produce a sweet flavor, while the chanterelles provide a woodsy taste to prove that vegan foods can indeed be incredibly flavorful.

Roasted Baby Parsnips with Sherry-Maple Glaze and Chanterelles

Serves 4

24 baby parsnips, trimmed, or 8 regular parsnips, root ends trimmed and peeled 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

1/4 cup pure maple syrup 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes 2 tablespoons Earth Balance butter stick 1 shallot, minced

2 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 pound chanterelles, wiped clean, quartered if large Finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, for garnish Flaked sea salt

To prepare the parsnips, preheat the oven to 400 F.

If using larger parsnips, peel and quarter them lengthwise so the pieces will be uniform in size and cook more evenly. Put the parsnips in a large mixing bowl, drizzle with 2 tablespoons of the oil, season with kosher salt and black pepper, and toss to coat evenly. Spread the parsnips out in a single layer on a large baking sheet and roast for about 20 minutes, shaking the pan from time to time, until tender and slightly charred. Set
