New Patient Smile Package PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Badly Behaved Dogs Need Basic Commands DEAR PAW’S CORNER:
Every time I read an article about a badly behaved dog, the trainer says that the dog needs to relearn basic commands like sit, stay and lie down. Why would unrelated commands solve a behavior problem? -- Edward in Albany, New York

DEAR EDWARD: Every dog should be trained to respond to five basic commands: come, heel, sit, stay and lie down. Dogs need to obey their owner the first time and every time a command is issued. That may sound a little harsh, but a dog that can’t be controlled is a dog in danger. Owners need to be able to recall a dog that has slipped its leash before it runs into traffic. They need to make sure their dog will walk beside them and will sit calmly on command, especially when another dog approaches. Their dog needs to stay in position when told to do so -- whether sitting or lying down. Dogs aren’t robots, though. Like us, their discipline and training will slip if not regularly reinforced. Think about how often you and I give in to temptation and take that second cookie (or third or fourth or fifth). Just as we humans sometimes need reinforcement of good habits, our dogs need regular reinforcement of basic commands. When owners spend more time working one-on-one with their dogs, they frequently report that undesirable behaviors happen less often. The time and attention that owners give can quickly blunt attention-seeking behaviors. The AKC has a good breakdown of the basic dog commands here: www.akc. org/ expert-advice/training/ and search for “5 basic commands.” Energetic young dogs can be a handful sometimes. If you are having trouble getting your dog to respond to basic commands, enlist the help of a professional trainer.

Cats only meow to human friends. In addition to purring, cats will rub up against people to show affection. This trait also serves to mark territory. Cats have scent glands around their faces, paws and tail area.

MAKE BEDROOMS MORE CONDUCIVE TO SLEEP
HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
Insufficient sleep causes more problems than many people may know. Fatigue after a poor night’s sleep might seem like an inconvenience that can be easily rectified, but the long-term effects of insufficient sleep are significant. According to the National Sleep Foundation, researchers have found a link between insufficient sleep and an elevated risk for type 2 diabetes. In one such study exploring that potential link, researchers asked healthy adults to sleep just four hours per night for six nights. At the conclusion of that period, participants’ ability to break down glucose had decreased by an average of 40 percent and reached levels that are consistent with those of older adults at risk for diabetes. Insufficient sleep may be linked to any of a host of factors, including one’s bedroom environment. An environment that promotes restful sleep can help people suffering from insomnia or restlessness improve the quality of their sleep.

Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

Every blade in the field, every leaf in the forest, lays down its life in its season, as beautifully as it was taken up. It is the pastime of a full quarter of the year. Dead trees, sere leaves, dried grass and herbs—are not these a good part of our life? 2020 Genesee Valley Hunt Races Canceled Due to Covid-19 Situation: After much thought and deliberation, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Genesee Valley Hunt Races, which were to take place October 10th. We share the disappointment of many who look forward to the Genesee Valley Hunt Races each year and appreciate that most will understand the necessity to cancel under the unprecedented situation of a global pandemic. Meanwhile, we’ll look forward to reconvening the Genesee Valley Hunt Races next year on October 9, 2021 with an event bigger and better than ever.

* “Want to be more organized in your home cleaning? It seems many people want to have a cleaner, more organized home but get overwhelmed when putting it into practice. Start by creating a cleaning schedule that breaks down jobs into a list incorporating tasks to be done daily, weekly and even monthly or quarterly. It takes the ‘if I can’t do everything I’ll just do nothing’ factor out of play.” -- J.M. in Pennsylvania * A bathroom squeegee can help eliminate water spots before they form on your shower doors. Hang one in your shower. * If you haven’t worn an item in six months (of its seasonality), it’s time to let it go. That’s been the Golden Rule for as long as I can remember. I was asked recently, Does it apply this year? I think now, like always, is a good time to look critically at your overall summer wardrobe, but I would add “opportunity” to the caveats. Meaning, if you haven’t worn it because you have not had an opportunity you otherwise would have had, save it. Those work clothes will be important again! -- JoAnn

UR STRONG I want to give a huge shout out to the many nurses I met during my stay this past month. Each and every one of you in your own way made my stay a little more bearable. From the handmade chocolate milkshake to just chatting with me, from laughing at my bad jokes to drawing funny pictures on the white board. But most of all, thanks for the care and attention given to me. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart! CAR ACCIDENT ANGEL I was in a bad car accident on Route 247 in Canandaigua on Friday, August 28th, and right after my car was hit I was
so scared and upset, but a very kind woman came to me and held me as I cried. She stayed right by side until the ambulance came. She was my angel, and I am forever grateful and blessed for her act of kindness. I did not get her name, but God bless you, and thank you so very much for being by my side. There are still kind people in this world, and she is definitely one of them! ABOVE AND BEYOND I want to recognize Alden Smith who owns Smith Solutions, our garbage service in Dansville. He is hands down the hardest working, most honest and respectful young man I know. He
goes above and beyond to serve his customers. Thank you for being outstanding in what I can imagine is a thankless job.

RESPONSE TO “RABBLE ROUSERS” I am so sorry if you are having difficulty opening a small business in whatever township you live in. I know that where I live, we had a beautiful hardware store set up business. It was so wonderful to have a place so close to home. They once told us what a difficult time Town Hall gave them when they wanted to open. Yet, we can have a place that brings down the neighborhood. That is fine with Town Hall, which I find odd. The hardware store unfortunately had to close its doors. How sad! I wish you well with your endeavors, but it does seem to be an upward climb for some.
someone who respects the town ordinance. Do you even know what kind of music that neighbor was playing? Do you just assume it is the kind of music you like? Such ignorance to assume all music has the same effect on everyone! If your music is loud enough to rock your neighbor’s house, you are intruding! Period. If I want free concerts, I would live next to a stadium. You were completely irresponsible to “suggest” that the original complainer move their residence in order to get some peace in their life. I suggest that you people find out who you all are, move into the same neighborhood, and play your personal outdoor concerts against each other.
My brother has 30 acres of land and has been watching a large turkey family in the fields eating grasshoppers. Something spooked them and they all flew across the road onto a certain property. This guy grabs his gun and starts shooting! My brother flipped out as he watched this. This person said he wanted a turkey for dinner after he lied about it saying the turkeys scared his horses, claiming he shot over the horses at the turkeys. My brother does not know for sure if he hit one, but if he got the hen, those babies surely won’t make it. I think these people are shooting deer, as well as rabbits and anything they can eat. What makes them special that they can shoot everything that BE GONE! is out of season? Mask Makers: COVID’s Everyday Heroes: Part I BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
o wear masks or not to wear masks has become the question lately. No matter where you stand there is no denying the care and selflessness shown by those at home who gave, and continue to give, their time, resources and talents to make masks for those in need. Five of these unsung heroes in Livingston and Ontario Counties open up about their maskmaking journeys.
fabric.” Deborah is continuing to make masks while there is need. “I have connected with different organizations, put some in shops and have people stop by,” she explained. Deborah welcomes anyone in need to reach out to her.
Linda Richards – York
Karen Schenk – Naples
When the pandemic resulted in a shutdown, Personal Trainer Linda Richards went from working 16-hour days to having a great deal of free time. “I thought, what do I do Linda Richards (right) made many headbands with my life?” said and masks with lots of help from Linda only half-joking. Linda Nicastro (left)! “I needed to help at a time when I felt helpless.” She began making headbands and straps with buttons to relieve ears from mask straps. “We called it Save the Ears!” she said. Linda’s efforts soon caught on. “I made 25 buttoned headbands to start with,” she recalled. “People found them via Facebook and word-ofmouth and began asking for them.” Almost immediately, a lack of supplies and closed stores became an issue; help came from across state lines. “I had a Facebook friend who reached out and began sending me headbands and other materials from Texas,” shared Linda. “Some people sewed a few, as well.”
These headbands, made by Linda Richards, have buttons sewn on them to relieve ears from mask straps!
Now, Linda, with a lot of help from a friend, has made over 1,000 headbands. She has sent them all over the country and to Puerto Rico. “We have used some unique and unusual buttons, so sometimes, we will see someone wearing a headband we are pretty sure is ours. I also just made headbands for kids who are going back to school. It was fun!”
Across the Livingston-Ontario County line in Naples lives Karen Deborah Wolfanger displays Schenk. When she saw masks being some of the numerous, sold for high prices, Karen knew she colorful masks she has made! had to do something to help people in need, especially those who didn’t have extra money. Her clever solution would help in more ways than one. “A friend encouraged me to make some masks, and it just went viral,” explained Karen. “I posted a picture, and everyone loved them. So, I began giving the masks away for free, and asking people to donate whatever they could for me to give to Naples Angels, an organization which helps those in the community who are struggling to pay their bills.
Karen has raised more than $300 for Naples Angels. Her masks can now be found at Joseph’s Market in Naples with the profits continuing to support the local organization, although they frequently sell out more quickly than she can make them. She plans to continue making them as long as people request them. “It is so rewarding to be able to help people in need, both those who need masks and those who need help paying their One of Karen Schenk’s masks made with bills. ” material from Sutton Spoons in Naples!

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Cologuard Test Worth Risk of False Positive ---
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old man in good health. At my recent annual physical exam, my physician ordered a Cologuard kit to be sent to me to screen for colorectal disease. I have never had symptoms of disease or problems with any part of my gastrointestinal tract. I had two colonoscopies at different times several years ago, the results of which were negative. When I got the kit, I read the patient guidelines and learned that the Cologuard test could result in false positives and that there is an unspecified increase in the risk of false positives for persons over the age of 75. A positive result from the test requires a follow-up colonoscopy, which is also riskier for elderly patients. Since I am in good health with no symptoms of any disease, I decided I did not want to risk a false positive result from the test, which would require a follow-up colonoscopy. Did I make the right decision? -- E.G. ANSWER: Cologuard is a brand of test that looks at DNA in stool for evidence of cancer. Certain DNA mutations are highly suggestive of cancer. In addition, Cologuard does an immunochemical test looking for blood. Because it combines these two techniques, Cologuard is more sensitive than only a test looking for blood. Compared with colonoscopy, Cologuard is about 92% sensitive in finding cancers, meaning it will miss about 8%. With improved sensitivity comes a lack of specificity, which means you could have a false positive result. The Cologuard can say that you have an abnormality when a colonoscopy would indicate normal. For 45% of people with a positive Cologuard test, no abnormalities will be found upon colonoscopy. You are right that false positives are more prevalent in older individuals. There are two reasons that I think the Cologuard is still a reasonable choice, despite the fact that it isn’t as good as colonoscopy. The first is that I continue to recommend a screening test for healthy 77-year-old men, and although colonoscopy is my first choice, a normal Cologuard test prevents a need for colonoscopy, and a false positive would lead to the same colonoscopy you would have gotten anyway (although there probably is more anxiety after a false positive test). The second is that a person with an abnormal Cologuard and a normal colonoscopy may be at risk for an abnormality that wasn’t found on colonoscopy. A study looking at people in this category found a 25% risk of abnormality on follow-up colonoscopy, if the Cologuard was abnormal again one to two years later. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had lung surgery in 2014. The scar is still red and sore. I got no instructions on how to deal with it. Do you have any suggestions? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: That’s a very long time for the scar to still be red and sore, and I would encourage you to have the surgeon or your regular doctor take a look. For people with redness and soreness in a scar shortly after surgery, I recommend silicone gel (there are many available), as it has been shown to be effective. Many people recommend vitamin E oil, but well-done studies have shown this does not help and may harm the cosmetic appearance. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
MALOCCLUSIONS Malocclusions of the teeth refers to several types of common dental issues involving the alignment of teeth and bite. A malocclusion is usually an inherited condition, but it can also be caused by habits including poor dental care, thumb sucking, and prolonged bottle feeding. One type of malocclusion is overcrowding, which causes teeth to grow in crookedly and overlap one another. Sometimes too much space exists between teeth, resulting in problems with chewing, bad breath, and bleeding gums. Over, under, and open bites also fall under the malocclusion umbrella. Impacted teeth (teeth that are unable to grow from the gum properly) and missing teeth are also sometimes referred to as malocclusions.

Don’t let dental abnormalities keep you from smiling, chewing, talking, and just generally enjoying life. There are many strategies available today to solve the problems caused by less than lovely teeth. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we’ll be happy to discuss which ones would be best for your circumstances. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

WHAT IS A TRUST? A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust. There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them.

Russell Toland September 13, 2020
September 26, 1990 - April 17, 2020
CALEDONIA, NY: September 13, 2020 at age 86. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Nancy Davidson Toland; children, Susan ( James) Lewis, Paul (Paula) Toland, Timothy (Karen) Toland, Ellen (Bernie) Sklanka; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Daniel Toland; parents Merle and Edith Toland; 6 brothers, 4 sisters. Russ was a Marine Veteran of the Korean War. Russell’s family was at the center of his life. His hobbies and passions included fishing, woodworking, and tending his garden. We will miss his fishing stories, patience and infectious smile. In his work-life for 35 years at J.O. Cook Inc, he made many life-long friends. He was a part of the First Presbyterian Church family in East Avon, and was a former member of the Caledonia Volunteer Fire Department. He was a stranger to none, and a friend of all. Family and friends are invited to call Wednesday, September 16, 2020 from 2 - 5 pm at the Stephenson - Dougherty Funeral Home, 350 Genesee Street, Avon. Funeral Services and interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1120 South Goodman Street, Rochester, NY 14620. To share a memory or send a condolence: stephenson-doughertyfuneralhome.com
General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

In Loving Memory
Page 27
We wish we had another Christmas, To sit around the tree, There wouldn't be another place, That we would hope to be. We wish we had another birthday, Together as we sing, Forgetting all tomorrows, And the sadness they might bring. We wish we had another dinner, House warm, us safe within, Saying that we love you, Is where we'd all begin. We wish we had another summer, Exploring in the woods, We'd look at life like magic, Just the way we always should. We wish we had another trip, No matter distance, no matter time, We wouldn't calculate the costs, And what we left behind. We wish we had another day, To sit and talk with you, There wouldn't be a single thing, That we would rather do. We wish we didn't have to wish, With pain that never ends, Yet we'll be wishing every day, Until the day we meet again. Happy Birthday Steve! We love you! Love, Mom, Dad, Tina, Chris and Kids

Gardeners My sweet corn, when a couple feet tall, produces 1-3 suckers off the base of the main stalk; why? Dave P. So-called “suckers” in this case are tillers. Corn tiller development is a normal part of corn physiology with variation by variety. Tillers generally indicate favorable
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County growing conditions which may mean plants are spaced too far apart with abundant moisture and excess fertility. Recommended spacing is with rows 30 to 36 inches apart with a spacing of 8 to 12 inches between plants within a row. Adverse weather
conditions such as hail and frost that damage the growing point in the stalk in early development can also cause tiller development. There is little effect from
tillers on the corn crop, and their presence is considered neutral, although there are some reports of positive and negative results.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

Box 102, 2578 Genesee Street Retsof, NY 14539 WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
