In 1892, the French newspaper La Siècle printed a game that was akin to Sudoku in that each row and column had to contain all the designated numbers, but unlike Sudoku, it involved numerals higher than 9 and engaged solvers’ mathematical skills, not their logic center.

Flash forward to 1979. Circumstantial evidence points to Indiana architect Howard Garns publishing a puzzle of his own invention (at that time named “Number Place”) in Dell Magazine that would become the game we now know as Sudoku.

GENERAL CONTRACTING

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System

When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training.

or go

and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place.

Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.

Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic.

Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now require outlets with ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some older homes may not even have three-pronged outlets, so this will necessitate an update as well.

Protect Your Mobile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) Mobile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disconcerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012.

When a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to more than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity.

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year. While identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like going through trash and stealing wallets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

PREVENT DIY INJURIES

Safety goggles and glasses are a must-have for any do-it-yourselfer. They will provide a barrier between the eye and flying debris. According to VisionWeb, an eye education resource, most of the 110,000 eye injuries that occur each year in homes within the United States result from splashes with household cleaners, flying debris such as wood chips, or getting hit by branches. Many of these injuries can be prevented by wearing eye protection.

CREATE DRAMA WITH BOLD PAINT COLORS

Decide how big an impact you want to make. Are you looking for color overload or just a small focal point of vivid color? Remember, using bold color doesn’t mean every wall must be lathered in that hue. Instead, select one wall to serve as an accent point and use that spot as your bold color display. Otherwise, rely on bold colors to dress up otherwise mundane areas, such as the back wall of a cupboard or moldings and trim.

KUDOS TO FAIRPORT FIREMEN!

We recently had our [presidential candidate] sign stolen from our yard. If I recall, the Constitution says we have free speech, not if it only pertains to your view. Please, less hate and more kindness, understanding and love.

Rude and Dangerous Drivers

Saturday eve at 9PM, my sister and I were worried when we didn’t see a clearly labeled ‘shuttle stop’ at the Fairport Music fest. We hailed 2 delightful young men in a Jeep type vehicle parked by the Fest entrance and told them of our concern. One ran down the street to flag the shuttle he saw coming to ensure the driver didn’t miss us on the curb. These men were SO kind, friendly and eager to help 2 seniors in need! I am sorry I didn’t get their names for a personal thanks.

When my car suddenly became undrivable in the middle of the right lane on [local road] across from [local plaza] late Friday afternoon, I did my best to get as far onto the shoulder as possible. I turned my 4-ways flashers on, called my husband, and called 911 to report my car in the road because I was afraid of causing an accident. To the woman who slowed while driving down the far lane on the other side of the road, thank you for asking if I needed help. To everyone else, and especially those on my side of the road who didn’t slow down or stop and worse yet, sped up to swerve into the next lane even though you could so easily have caused an actual accident, shame on you. I hope you never find yourself in a similar situation one day. And to the police officer who asked if I’d run out of gas...since my car was still running, no I did not. The real cause: a snapped drive axle.

DVT Patient Switches to Aspirin With Good Results

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old female who has been on Xarelto for years due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT). I also have an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter. I read that low-dose aspirin (325 mg) is just as effective in preventing clots in the legs as Xarelto, which is very expensive. My doctor advises against changing to aspirin, but won’t give me an explanation as to why.

I switched anyway, and the redness in my foot disappeared. After one month of taking 325 mg of coated aspirin daily, I have no symptoms and actually feel better. What are your thoughts? -- A.B.

ANSWER: Although aspirin is better than nothing, it has been proven to be less effective than Xarelto and similar medicines in people who are at risk for blood clots. In a yearlong trial comparing the two, recurrences of DVT (a blood clot in the deep veins of the leg) occurred in just over 1% of people taking Xarelto and in 4.4% of people taking aspirin. (This study used low-dose aspirin -- 100 mg -- rather than the full-dose of 325 mg that you are taking.) The risk of bleeding was about the same among the aspirin group and the Xarelto group.

Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory, which may be why the redness in your foot disappeared. I doubt it had anything to do with a blood clot.

For people at a high risk, I recommend against changing from a more-effective medicine like Xarelto to aspirin. In your case, you are protected against a blood clot in the lung by your filter, which is designed to catch any clot before it can get to the lung. Unfortunately, the IVC filter slightly increases the risk of a recurrence of a blood clot in the legs, so it’s important to keep taking medication to reduce your risk.

Given the serious nature of a blood clot, I can’t recommend disregarding your doctor’s advice, although you deserve a thorough explanation from your doctor. If the main issue for your wanting to change medications is the expense, you might ask your doctor if there are lessexpensive alternatives that would still be as effective as Xarelto. The manufacturer also offers a program to help with expenses.

*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

TYPES OF TISSUE YOU CAN DONATE

Cornea: The cornea is the clear covering of the eye. The National Eye Institute notes that, unlike most other tissues in the body, the cornea does not contain blood vessels to provide nourishment or protection against infection. By donating their corneas, donors can help restore sight to people who lost theirs due to disease or injury.

SUPPORTING HEALTHY ORAL CARE FROM THE START

Babies are born with both their baby and adult teeth already forming and waiting to come in, giving pregnant mothers the opportunity to start supporting their baby’s oral health well before birth. Primary teeth start forming around the sixth week of pregnancy. In the second trimester permanent adult teeth begin to form and primary teeth complete the majority of their growth. During the third trimester calcium and phosphorus are an essential part of the mother’s nutritional needs to help mineralize the baby’s teeth. Potassium, magnesium, and vitamins D, A, and C are other essential nutrients for fetal tooth development. Compromised oral health during pregnancy is linked to low birth weights and early deliveries.

Introducing children to dental care at an early age sets the stage for a

lifetime of healthy dental hygiene. It all starts with proper brushing and flossing and a tooth-friendly diet. It continues with regular professional care and cleanings, all leading to a sparkling smile that will last a lifetime. For more information on how to get your child’s dental experience off to a good start, we welcome your call at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246

We see both children and adults as patients here at 6 Batavia City Centre, because we believe everyone, regardless of age, deserves a winning smile.

P.S. Early deliveries often put babies at higher risk for oral health issues because their teeth have not had sufficient time to mineralize in the womb.

Always practice summer sun safety

When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS

is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

MICROCEPHALY BROUGHT INTO THE LIMELIGHT

Conception and childbirth are miracles of life. While parents experience many joys during pregnancy and delivery, they must discuss potentially uncomfortable conversations that need to be addressed. This includes the potential that babies will born with birth defects.

Over the last year, microcephaly, a rare but serious disability, has garnered substantial attention. Microcephaly is a neurological condition in which an infant’s head is significantly smaller than the heads of other children of the same age and sex, advises The Mayo Clinic. The condition is typically the result of the brain developing abnormally in the womb or not growing as it is supposed to after birth. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says microcephaly can be an isolated condition, or it can occur in combination with other major birth defects. Depending on the severity of the condition, children with microcephaly can face any number of symptoms. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, symptoms of microcephaly include impaired cognitive development, delayed motor functions, dwarfism, seizures, difficulties with balance, and other neurological abnormalities.

Although microcephaly is rare, according to the National Birth Defects Prevention Network, it may become more common. That’s because microcephaly has been linked to mothers who were exposed to the Zika virus while pregnant. Exposure to in utero substance abuse, as well as genetic or chromosomal issues, also can lead to microcephaly. Dr. Nassim Zecavati, an assistant professor of pediatrics and neurology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, says essentially anything that slows down brain growth in the womb or causes a severe deprivation of oxygen and blood flow before, during or after delivery can be problematic.

Unfortunately, no treatment exists to return a child’s head and brain to normal size. Instead, treatment focuses on reducing the impact associated with neurological disabilities and subsequent physical disabilities. Early childhood intervention programs that include speech, physical and occupational therapy may be part of a child’s course of treatment. Certain medications can be prescribed to help with seizures or hyperactivity. Thanks to its link to the Zika virus, microcephaly has garnered considerable attention over the last year-plus. Though still rare, microcephaly is something expecting parents and couples planning to have children should familiarize themselves with.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* Pill bugs, also known as roly-polys, are not insects but rather crustaceans. They breathe through gills and are more closely related to shrimp and lobsters than other bugs.

TOP ROOFING TRENDS

(NAPSI)—While replacing your roof can be expensive, it may pay to know more about increasingly popular stone-coated metal. There are five good reasons:

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “Today’s accomplishments were yesterday’s impossibilities.” -- Rev. Robert H. Schuller

1. Durability: Combining the strength of steel with the design versatility of crushed stone, stone-coated metal roofing offers a better-looking way to protect your investment. Thanks to its engineering, stone-coated metal stands up to harsh conditions, including fire, wind, hail, hurricanes, seismic activity, and extreme cold and heat.

2. Curb Appeal: Stone-coated metal comes in a collection of eye-catching contours and colors. Panels can resemble Mediterranean tile, hand-split wood shake, heavyweight shingle or even old-world Italian tile.

3. Long-Term Value: Stone-coated metal offers greater longevity— three—plus times more—and lower maintenance needs than most other roofing products. “In an average lifetime, a homeowner will need to replace an asphalt roof at least three times as often for the same cost of one stonecoated metal roof,” explained Mark Gallant, Vice President of New Product Development at DECRA Metal Roofing, the original stone-coatedsteelroofingsystem, with over 60 years of research and practical experience.

4. Keep It Cool: Metal roofing can help cool your home through air space between the panels and the roof deck, reducing heat transfer. Some roofing colors can also reflect unwanted solar heat.

5. Save Money: A stone-coated metalroofcouldnetyouadiscount on your homeowners insurance. Check with your insurance agent.

Overall, a stone-coated metal roof can help your home look better, feel more comfortable while you live in it and be easier to sell when you want to.

Here’s A Tip

* To fix a hole in drywall that requires a healthy helping of joint compound, you can cut a piece of screen slightly bigger than the hole and tack it to the inside of the drywall. You also can wad up a piece of aluminum foil and shove it in the hole, pressing it in a bit to create a recess for the compound. e foil will keep the compound at the site of the hole, allowing it to set up instead of fall down. * "I recently did a little work on my car, and a erward I washed and waxed it. My tools got pretty grimy, so I cleaned them too. Since I had the wax out, I used it on several of them to keep them from rusting in storage." -via email

FEELING READY FOR WORK? THIS COULD BE YOUR YEAR (NAPSI)—Whether you’re looking for a job for the first time or trying to return to the workforce, you don’t have to do it alone.

Thanks to Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can receive free services and supports through service providers like Employment Networks (EN) and State VocationalRehabilitation(VR)agencies.

For 20 years, the Ticket program has provided the support people need on their paths to employment and empowerment.

Angel is one of those people.

The Ticket program helped Angel after injuries to his neck and back derailed his career in the U.S.Air Force. Once he had taken the time to heal,Angel knew he wanted to work but wasn’t sure how his disabilities would affect his options.

“I was a young man with a family to support,” Angel says. “… and I was not ready to give up on the workforce.”

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* World War II German interrogator Hanns Scharff’s unusual techniques for extracting information -- which included sharing his wife’s homemade baked goods, cracking jokes, unsupervised nature walks and afternoon tea -- were so successful that the U.S. military later incorporated them into their own interrogation schools.

When Angel learned about a job opportunity with a federal contractor, he thought that his disability would prevent him from being a viable job candidate. But then, Angel learned about programs, resources and guidelines that could help him. First, he learned about Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Under Section 503, companies that do business with the federal government take affirmative action to recruit, hire, retain and promote individuals with disabilities. Angel also connected with a Ticket program EN that offered the services and support he needed for a fresh start. His EN helped him find the confidence he needed to pursue the job.Working with a Benefits Counselor at the EN, Angel learned about Social Security Work Incentives that applied tohimand, onceAngelstartedworking, his EN helped him request reasonable accommodations to help him in his new job working on a federal contract for the U.S. Department of Defense. Angel is happy to be working again with military peers, earning income to support his family.

“In the Air Force, your wingman is by your side as you face uncertainty,” he reflects. “…[like a wingman] the Ticket program is by my side, and I’m grateful for that as I look ahead.”

Ticket to Work helped Angel find his path to a better future. Find yours! To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at (866) 968-7842 or (866) 833-2967 (TTY). Or visit https://choosework.ssa.gov/.

“Inthelittleworldinwhichchildrenexist,thereisnothing sofinelyperceivedandsofinelyfeltasinjustice…”

Charles Dickens had a keen insight into human nature and here he tells us what every mother learns from her own children. Youngsters may not enjoy being told “No” or disciplined, but they’ll accept such treatment as long as they feel it is fair.

If they’re actually guilty and “the punishment fits the crime,” they’ll go along with their parents’ decisions. When treatment of children shows bias or prejudice or when punishment is not even-handed, children quickly recognize and deeply resent such injustice.

When a death occurs, make your first phone call to us. We can explain what must be done and relieve you of many of the details.

Wishing all our local students and teachers a safe & successful school year!

Grilling season has arrived, and amateur grillmasters everywhere are gearing up for another summer of backyard barbecues and family dinners outside under the summer sun. But once you fire up that grill and cook your first hot dog of the season, your work is not quite done. Cleaning the grill after you have eaten makes it easier to prolong the life of your grill and ensure the foods you eat are safe to consume.

PAW’S CORNER

Fight Back Against Fleas

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My apartment has been infested with fleas all summer! I’m so frustrated. My two cats are suffering from hot spots and patchy fur because of the flea bites, and I’ve constantly got bites all over my legs. I don’t want to give my cats flea medicine because I heard it is dangerous to their health. What can I do to get rid of these fleas? -- Cara J. in Macon, Georgia

DEAR CARA: You’re going to have to plan an all-out assault on the flea infestation, and do it as soon as possible.

Talk to your veterinarian about the health risks and benefits of various flea and tick treatments. Ticks can give your cats heartworm and tapeworm. Your cats’ health is at greater risk right now from not doing anything than they would be from an effective treatment.

Next, get rid of the fleas and their eggs in your house with a complete cleaning and treatment. Take down the curtains and wash and dry them. Wash all your bedding and clothes. Dust from ceiling to floor. Vacuum the carpets thoroughly. Wash all mats and put out in the sun to dry. Clean every corner of the apartment. Clean fabric furniture with a steam cleaner. Flip the sofa and vacuum up all the dust bunnies and dirt.

Finally, with the cats sequestered in a safe room, treat the carpet to kill remaining fleas and their eggs. You can use a direct spray or an insecticide that is sprinkled into the carpet and vacuumed up. is all-out assault will nearly wipe out the fleas in your home. But they can (and will) come back. To keep them on the retreat, vacuum twice a week, wash your cats’ bedding weekly, and make sure the cats get their flea/tick/heartworm medication on schedule.

GENESEE VALLEY GREENWAY STATE PARK

Cultivates Public Recreation and the Preservation of Natural and Cultural Resources

A90-mile corridor of green spaces following the route of the old Genesee Valley Canal (1840-1878) and the Pennsylvania Railroad Rochester Branch (1882-1963) from the Erie Canalway TrailinRochester’sGeneseeValleyParktothevillageofCubainAllegany County, the Genesee Valley Greenway (GVG) State Park is a work in progress that will eventually extend to Hinsdale in Cattaraugus County.

e Greenway includes a public, multi-use trail and natural and historic resources. e majority of the trail is an old railway bed that is a straight, level surface. e Greenway passes through woodlands, wetlands, river and stream valleys, rolling farmlands, steep gorges, and historic villages in sixteen towns in Monroe, Livingston, Wyoming,

Like other abandoned towpaths and rail beds across the country, the Genesee Valley Greenway State Park provides various opportunities for public recreation, the preservation of open space, protecting natural and cultural resources in a lineal corridor.

e Genesee Valley Greenway provides offroad connections to rural communities, parks, other trails, and attractions in the region. e Greenway connects to the Genesee Riverway Trail, Finger Lakes Trail, Erie Canal Recreation Way, the Erie Attica Trail, and the Lehigh Valley Trail.

e continuity of the corridor creates a ‘tunnel of green’ and acts as a physical link between adjacent habitats for birds, mammals, amphibians, and other wildlife. e Greenway is a vital conservation resource, helping to protect, promote, maintain, and link natural, historic and cultural resources along the Greenway.

Each year, the Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway partners with Genesee Valley Greenway State Parks and Parks & Trails NY to clear the greenway of trash, paint gates, and provide amenities. Volunteers also help spread the word about the Greenway’s historically significant features such as the Black Creek Canal culvert, historic Lock #2, the Belfast warehouse, Oakland locks, and an array of old railway bridges and bridge abutments.

e Genesee Valley Greenway State Park allows biking, hiking, horseback riding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling in designated areas, and fishing in designated waterways. Families and individuals can even enjoy geocaching along the Greenway. ere is truly something for everyone along the Greenway.

Each January, the Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway rings in the New Year with a guided First Day Hike in Avon, Cuba, Hinsdale, Mt. Morris, Nunda, Rochester, Scottsville, and York. In April, celebrate Earth Day to encourage veterans and newbies to explore the trail with guided

tours. May features I Love My Park Day events in towns and villages along the span, encouraging folks to help clean up the community’s fabulous greenspaces. roughout the year, other community events such as Birding on the Greenway encourage the use and conservation of our incredible natural resources.

e Greenway is part of the Wegmans Passport Program, encouraging families to get outside and explore the GVG, completing 2-7.5 mile hikes along the Greenway to receive a Wegmans coupon and enter to win an Empire Passport.

A work-in-progress, various projects to improve drainage, trail tread, and bridge construction continue to close gaps in the Genesee Valley Greenway State Park, linking greenspaces along the 90-mile corridor.

Visit Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway for a detailed map of open segments and on-road detours, as well as a mile-by-mile trail description.

is year, on Saturday, September 14th, the Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway host their first annual Greenway Cycle Challenge to celebrate western NY’s commitment to preserving Genesee Valley Greenway State Park. e 10-mile ride from Scottsville to Avon will be reminiscent of September 1896 when 1,500 bicyclists rode the trail for a similar event.
