GLOBAL NEW YEAR’S TRADITIONS Around Stonehaven, Scotland, people wield large fireballs for the Hogmanay festival on New Year’s Eve. The idea is to ward off evil spirits by swinging balls of fires over the heads of trained professionals and then tossing them into the sea. The tradition has endured for more than 100 years.

CRUISING TIPS AND TRICKS: Explore special discounts.
In the Eastern Orthodox Greek Church, Christmas isn’t celebrated until January 7. Aghios Vassilis, the Greek Santa Claus, makes his rounds on New Year’s Day.
When shopping for a cruise, see if there are discounts available for seniors, teachers, people in the military, or those who belong to certain clubs. Cruises often love to incentivize, so it pays to ask about discount pricing. SPORTS QUIZ

Call or text (585) 746-2001 CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE Don’t overindulge in alcohol. For many people, overindulging in alcohol is part and parcel during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Such behavior puts everyone at risk, even people who don’t drive. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, conservative estimates suggest that roughly one-half of sexual assaults on American women involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator, victim or both. While alcohol and its relationship to traffic fatalities draw the bulk of the attention on New Year’s Eve, even people who don’t intend to drive should recognize the dangers of overindulging in alcohol and drink responsibly.

DID YOU KNOW? Many people consider the Times Square section of midtown Manhattan the epicenter of North American New Year’s Eve celebrations. While there are plenty of places throughout North America to ring in the new year, few, if any, can compare to Times Square, where revelers have been celebrating the dawn of a new year for well over a century. According to the Times Square Alliance, New Year’s Eve was first celebrated in Times Square in 1904. But the New Year’s Eve ball, an iconic symbol of the holiday across the globe, did not make an appearance until 1907, when it descended from a flagpole atop One Times Square. Made of iron and wood, that first ball weighed 700 pounds and was outfitted with 100 25-watt light bulbs. One hundred light bulbs might have seemed like a lot back in 1907, but a century later the special ball made to mark the centennial celebration was illuminated with more than 32,000 Philips Luxeon LED bulbs, which organizers felt greatly increased the brightness and color capabilities of the ball.

GLOBAL NEW YEAR’S TRADITIONS Siberians celebrate the new year’s with the planting of the “New Year’s Tree” underneath frozen lakes. This “yolka” is said to symbolize the coming of Father Frost, but also represents starting over.

STORE HOURS: Saturday 10am-4pm Or by appointment
We have socks, sweaters, gloves galore. Come stop by, there is so much more! THE RIGHT ATTIRE MAKES SHOPPING EASIER Depending on where you live and what time you leave the house to go shopping, initial temperatures might be chilly before rising later in the day. But shoppers should keep in mind that, as stores fill with shoppers, interior temperatures can quickly climb. Start with comfortable jeans, yoga pants, sweats or leggings. A fitted T-shirt can be worn on its own or layered underneath a hoodie or lightweight sweater. Forgo a heavy downfilled coat for a thick fleece or fisherman’s weave sweater that can be tied around the waist while shopping. Ladies might like an insulating yet loosefitting poncho that can be rolled up into a bag if it gets too hot.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Serving you has been a real treat for us, and we look forward to sharing more good times with you in the New Year. Thanks for your generous support. We wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a happy 2019!

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.
Cheers! As we pop open a New Year, we’d like to share our best wishes with all of our valued friends and customers here in the community. Thanks for the outpouring of support you’ve shown us in 2018!

The Board of Regents today named Christopher Albrecht the 2018 New York State Teacher of the Year From Nysed.gov, Printed with Permission from the New York State Education Department Regents Chancellor Betty A. Rosa and State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia presented Albrecht, a fourth-grade teacher at the Fred W. Hill School in Brockport, with a certificate of recognition as well as the Thomas Sobol Award and the David Johnson Award, both created as annual gifts for recipients of the Teacher of the Year award. “In his more than 20 years as an educator, Christopher Albrecht has served as an exemplary classroom teacher, proving to be a tremendous positive force in the lives of his students,” Chancellor Rosa said. “Every day he goes above and beyond to provide his students with the best learning experience possible. His dedication to fostering learning in the young minds of all children, whether in his classroom or community, make him especially deserving to be named the Teacher of the Year.” “Christopher Albrecht not only teaches academics, but helps build character, humor and a positive attitude in every student,” Commissioner Elia said. “He has a long history of service to his district, students and his community. Teaching offers a priceless gift – the chance to impact students’ lives – and Mr. Albrecht lives that gift each day.” Albrecht, the 48th New York State Teacher of the Year, has taught at the at Fred W. Hill School for 20 years, the last 14 spent teaching fourth grade. He is a native of upstate New York and first discovered his passion for teaching when he worked as a camp counselor on Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes region of the state. “We have more than 200,000 fantastic teachers in our state. They are highly skilled professionals who put the interests of children and their public schools first and foremost every single day of the year,” said NYSUT President Andy Pallotta. “Still, Chris Albrecht stands out. He is the perfect standardbearer for the dedication, passion and excellence in teaching that is found throughout New York’s public education system.” “Teaching is one of the noblest professions. All our teachers put their hearts and souls into the extraordinary work they do each and every day. Chris Albrecht’s recognition as New York State Teacher of the Year is a true testament of his passion and dedication to his students, school and district,” said Brockport Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lesli C. Myers. “We couldn’t be prouder of his achievement and are certain he will serve as a phenomenal ambassador for teachers throughout the state during his tenure as Teacher of the Year.” “We are extremely proud of Chris here at the Fred W. Hill School. He will be a wonderful ambassador for New York State’s educators and embodies so many of the qualities that make our teachers second to none nationally,” Fred W. Hill School Principal Brandon Broughton said. “Chris is
an outstanding practitioner and creates one of the best classroom environments you could ever hope to experience. Where he really separates himself even among exemplary educators is his dedication to the whole child and to building a deep relationship with both his students and their families. Being in his classroom can be a life changing experience for a child. I have witnessed him dedicate a great deal of his own time to helping students reach their personal goals both in the classroom and beyond. He is always accessible and takes great joy in celebrating his students’ successes with them. We are lucky to have him with us at Hill School and look forward to sharing the wonderful journey that comes with such a prestigious honor.” Albrecht is a graduate of St. Bonaventure University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. He earned his master’s degree in elementary education from Clarion University. While there, Albrecht worked as a graduate assistant at a time when the internet was first being pioneered in classrooms. Shortly after graduating, he was hired to teach a newly formed technology program at a school in West Virginia. There he created a first of its kind, fully-integrated technology curriculum involving the internet. After three years of teaching in West Virginia, Albrecht returned to New York and began teaching at the Fred W. Hill School in Brockport. In his time there, he proved to be an incredibly involved member of the school and community. He spent 20 years on English Language Arts curriculum development committees, founded the Hill School Spelling Bee, mentored 11 student teachers and four first-year teachers, and founded the Hill School yearbook committee, which he still advises. Albrecht also coached high school baseball for 14 years and soccer for five years. In 2015, Mr. Albrecht began an after school running program for 4th and 5th grade students with a focus on building self-confidence in special needs children. This team has grown from 5 to 19 students with all students completing a 5K road race. In the community, Albrecht sits on the Board of Trustees for the Western Monroe Historical Society and is a trustee on the Board of the Clarkson Historical Society. Albrecht served for six years on the Board of YMCA Camp Cory. As a self-taught geologist focused on paleontology, he is a frequently requested presenter by the Rochester Academy of Sciences, the Rochester Lapidary Society and in 2016 was the keynote speaker at the annual convention for the Eastern Federation of Mineralogists. In the coming year, Albrecht will serve as an ambassador for teachers throughout the state and will be the New York State nominee for the National Teacher of the Year.

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy TOOTHLESS ARGUMENT “Edentulism” refers to the condition of being toothless to varying degrees. Loss of some teeth is known as ‘partial edentulism,’ while loss of all teeth is called ‘complete edentulism.’ More than 36 million Americans have no teeth at all, and 120 million people in the United States are missing at least one tooth. These numbers are expected to grow in the next two decades. As the population ages, the number of people experiencing tooth loss is expected to rise, either due to tooth decay and gum disease or trauma, injury, or simple wear. It is important to remember, however, that tooth loss can be remedied with bridges, dentures, and/or dental implants. Tooth loss is not a natural part of aging. To keep your teeth and to keep them strong, be sure to keep your
dental appointments for regular checkups. Remember that nothing is more economical than regular, professional visits to the dentist to help guard against any problems that may threaten your smile. If you have questions about caring for your teeth and gums and achieving optimum dental health, please feel free to call us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246. Our full-service, stateof-the-art office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre, where office hours are by appointment. P.S. There is some form of dental prosthesis to suit every budget. Cost should not be a barrier to replacing teeth.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I wonder why you never talk about holistic measures to prevent illnesses, such as cancer. I just read an article by an oncologist who said there are certain anti-cancer supplements that work, including vitamin D, magnolia extract and artichoke extract, all of which have been shown in laboratory studies to kill a variety of cancer cells, including colon, breast and liver cancers, and leukemia. Artichoke extract also contains cynarin, which decreases inflammation. Other compounds that can reduce cancer growth are black cumin seed oil and bee propolis, which is rich in caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), chrysin and cinnamic acid -- compounds that affect cancer genes. Studies show that they reduce the growth of many cancers, including colon, prostate and kidney. I’ve also read about the powerful effects that simple seasonings have on cancer cells: black pepper, sage and oregano. My question to you is: Why isn’t this blasted all over the news media, and why don’t physicians who can access this information tell it to their patients? -- V.A. ANSWER: The therapies you mention are termed “complementary” or “alternative” treatments, specifically “herbal treatments.” Holistic medicine, on the other hand, aims to treat the entire person -- physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Holistic medicine ought to be a goal for all providers, since health consists of much more than mere absence of physical disease. While a physician can help with some of these aspects, it is difficult or impossible for one person to be expert in helping a person meet all goals of wellness, which is why collaborative care is so important. With respect to the herbal treatments you mention, and others like them, it is my opinion that these have potential to help treat some kinds of cancer. However, I am quite convinced, after reading many studies, that none of them is completely effective at preventing or curing cancer. Compounds can be very effective at killing cancer cells in a laboratory, but that is very different from killing cancer cells in a person at a level that’s achievable without toxicity. That’s why they aren’t on the news media -- they aren’t a cure, and haven’t been proven definitively helpful. If that changes, I will be among the first to spread the news. Where I believe alternative therapies have the most potential in cancer is in combination with traditional therapies: helping people feel better through chemotherapy and radiation. Some herbals, like turmeric, have solid data showing benefit in combination with chemotherapy in treating some cancers. However, finding an oncologist who has expertise in alternative treatment might not be easy. Similarly, finding an alternative medicine provider who knows enough about cancer and chemotherapy to be of value to both the patient and the oncologist isn’t easy. There are some centers where both traditional and complementary therapies are used, and where the patient’s entire care team is aware of all the treatments a patient is getting. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Take Steps To Improve Your Retirement Confidence (NAPSI)—A recent study by the Insured Retirement Institute found that only 25 percent of baby boomers believe they will have enough money in retirement and just 28 percent believe they did a good job financially preparing for their retirement years. This dismal view of their retirement prospects by so many aging Americans is concerning, but what is even more sobering is the study found that boomers are actually less satisfied with their finances than they were as recently as five years ago. In 2012, 41 percent of baby boomers believed they were doing a good job of financial preparation. This decline in retirement confidence has taken place in spite of healthy market conditions and rising interest rates for most retirees’ investments. Fortunately, the news doesn’t have to be so bad if seniors allow this news to serve as a wake-up call for them to take action. Here are five steps that experts say boomers can take to revisit their retirement plans now and fix things that have gone awry: 1. Reassess priorities. Take stock of your available resources and prioritize your needs vs. your wants, based on where your life is now and what is most important to you in the years ahead. 2. Raise cash. Consider options that may be available to you for boosting your savings, such as a part-time job or perhaps selling off some possessions you no longer need. 3. Generate interest. Re-evaluate where your money is sitting today and consider moving as much as you can out of cash and into interest-bearing accounts, which are paying depositors more than they have in several years.
4. Look for hidden assets. Inventory all your assets that might create cash flow, including those you may have overlooked in the past, such as a life insurance policy. A life insurance policy is your personal property and, if you no longer need or can afford it, you may be able to sell it for an immediate cash payment. 5. Leverage your house. If you own your home, consider a reverse mortgage or a home equity line of credit as a way to free up cash that you can use to pay off health care bills or other expenses. Of these five steps, the one that could produce the most immediate cash flow may be the sale of a life insurance policy, known as a life settlement. Most consumers who qualify for a life settlement are 70 or older and own a life insurance policy with a benefit of at least $100,000. For more information or for a free evaluation of your life insurance policy, go to www.LISA.org or call the LISA office at 888-985-0773.

“One of the delights known to age and beyond the grasp of youth is that of ‘Not Going’…”
~ J.B. Priestley Members of the younger generations suffer from an imagined necessity for doing what others are doing, solely because “everyone is doing it.” Probably most of the questionable habits of today’s teenagers can be traced to “peer pressure.” Each youngster feels he or she must go along with all group activities or be branded as a non-conforming “oddball” or “loner.” As we grow older, we realize that what others do is the worst guide for our own behavior. We learn the delight, and the relief, of simply “not going” to any place or practice that we dislike or disagree with. The pre-planning of one’s own funeral arrangements relieves your loved ones of the burden of making painful decisions under stress. Ask our friendly staff about the details.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It’s a good time to take a much-needed break from your recent hectic schedule and spend some time in quieter surroundings. Important news could arrive early next week. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Taurean traits of reliability and thoroughness could be well-tested when decision-makers consider your proposals and/or requests. Be prepared to answer some probing questions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A sudden attack of boredom leaves you with some tasks undone. It’s OK to take a short respite. But get back to work by week’s end so that you have time for other projects. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Avoid prejudging a situation just because it looks bad. Facts could emerge that would make your position uncomfortable, to say the least. A relative has interesting news to share with you. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) This is a good time to begin reassessing some of your recent decisions about your longrange goals to see if they still have merit. Spend more time with loved ones this weekend. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unsettled situation at home or on the job early in the week could drain your energy levels, making it difficult to get your work done on schedule. But things improve by midweek. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A temporary setback could give you time to go over your plans to find weaknesses you might have overlooked before. A romantic getaway with that special person is favored this weekend. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Professional and personal situations benefit once you set a positive tone in getting things off to a good start. Honest dialogue smoothes over any occasional display of balkiness. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A problem with workplace colleagues or family members seems to defy even your sage counsel. But be patient. Your words eventually will lead to a resolution. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t just wait out that unexpected and unexplained delay in your career move. You could gain added respect if you ask why it happened and what you can do to move things along. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Although your workplace strategies usually are accepted, you could be challenged by someone who isn’t so favorably impressed. Be prepared to defend your positions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your friendship circle expands, with new people coming into your life at this time. Welcome them warmly. But don’t neglect those cherished longtime personal relationships. BORN THIS WEEK: You love to search for knowledge and share it with others. You would make an especially fine teacher. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

NEW YEAR’S CELEBRATIONS ACROSS THE GLOBE New York, NY Times Square is in the heart of midtown Manhattan and is a sight to behold any time of year. But the New Year’s celebration in Times Square is a truly unique event that many people insist they must experience at least once in their lifetimes. Each year, roughly one million revelers gather at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue, so anyone planning to attend the celebration should aim to get there long before midnight if they want to see the famed ball drop.

If you need a car to get around on New Year’s Eve and plan to drink alcohol, arrange for someone else to do your driving for you. Groups of friends should choose someone to be their designated driver or pool their money and hire a taxi or bus service for the night so no one who’s been drinking gets behind the wheel. The NHTSA even offers a free app called SaferRide that is compatible with Apple and Android devices and enables users to call a taxi or a friend to be picked up.

CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE Host responsibly. Even people who don’t intend to leave their homes can take steps to make New Year’s Eve safer for everyone. If you’re hosting a party at home, do so responsibly, making sure none of your guests overindulge and making the party less about drinking and more about having fun. Shift the focus from toasting drinks to games and activities that don’t include alcohol. Make sure to have plenty of food and nonalcoholic beverages on hand and encourage people who are drinking to eat full meals and drink water throughout the night. People who fill up on food and water during the party may feel full, which may discourage them from having extra drinks. While many people will expect to drink alcohol on New Year’s Eve, don’t stock up on too much alcohol, the availability of which may encourage guests to overindulge. Hosts also should keep the phone numbers of local taxi services handy just in case some guests cannot drive themselves home safely.
HOW TO BE MORE COURTEOUS WHILE DINING OUT If something is not right with the meal, mention it early so it can be remedied. Do not eat an entire meal before filing a complaint with the server.
Remember, ALL menu items are ALWAYS available for take out. Just mention any of these specials to your server.

Owners and store managers, please do the decent thing and give your cashiers those little beeswax cakes businesses used to have or even some hand cream. Either that or I'll find some other places to shop.
Am I the only one disgusted by cashiers licking their fingers while opening plastic bags and handling cash, etc.? I've been seeing a lot of this lately and I can't believe that others haven't complained about it or that cashiers don't seem to be concerned about what germs they are putting in their mouths.

Why are you in the roadway on your medical scooter, after dark, no lights on scooter, and wearing dark clothing? It is VERY dangerous not only to you but to other drivers in cars, trucks and other actual licensed vehicles on the road. The sidewalks are plowed. If it's going to be okay to drive a medical scooter on roads, then get lights on it, get it inspected, licensed, and insurance registration just like you have to do for any other motorized vehicle! Just wanted to tell the Genesee Country Museum what a fabulous time my friends and I had at your recent 'Yuletide in the Country Tour' followed by a delicious buffet. It was just magical and we are so fortunate to have you in our area. I so encourage people to take advantage of this marvelous holiday effort.
should NOT BE used on roads, especially at night! High school sports are about more than just winning or losing. While it is nice to feature young athletes, it is discouraging to see that the focus of the coverage is building unfair and unrealistic pressure on these kids. Whether or not a team is going to win a sectional title this year or in the future should be secondary. Athletes’ participation should be rewarded with positive coverage, not negative pressure. On Thanksgiving, the owner was the rudest I've ever seen at a restaurant. Upon checking in, my mother who almost fell twice walking in, commented that the parking lot was very icy as she was concerned that someone
Festive Local Resident - To the individual who lives near 390 South, past the Rush exit: Thank you for lighting the tree on the hill. It is a spirit lifter on the way to work and on the way home. Makes me smile when I see it. Happy Holidays to you and yours! A Livonia Resident THANK YOU to the Avon Wesleyan Church. Went to their Living Nativity on Saturday, 12/15, for the first time. What a wonderful experience. From the people who greeted you, the actors, the people loading the wagons, it was all so well done. Next year I plan on taking everyone in my entire family. Thank you for the real meaning of Christmas. Happy Holidays to you & yours!
would get hurt. Owner's response was, "It's called winter and there is nothing that I can do." When mentioned it was a liability, he said he "had plenty of insurance." He was so unbelievably rude my family left. Too bad that he can't figure out how to find someone to salt his parking lot and be a little nicer to customers who are concerned about the safety of others on holidays. The wide white line painted at an intersection with a traffic signal is a STOP LINE. By law, you must stop behind it, not on or past it. This leaves room for left-turners and keeps you from blocking the view (especially if you have a big vehicle) of drivers in other lanes. Please be considerate, follow the law, and stop behind the Stop Line.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
