HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Some unsettling facts about a past situation could come to light. And while you’d love to deal with it immediately, it’s best to get more information to support your case. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A straightforward approach to a baffling situation is best. Don’t allow yourself to be drawn into an already messy mass of tangles and lies. Deal with it and move on. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Don’t be discouraged or deterred by a colleague’s negative opinion about your ideas. It could actually prove to be helpful when you get around to finalizing your plan. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Ignore that sudden attack of “modesty,” and step up to claim the credit you’ve so rightly earned. Remember: A lot of people are proud of you and want to share in your achievement. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A financial “deal” that seems to be just right for you Leos and Leonas could be grounded more in gossamer than substance. Get an expert’s advice to help you check it out. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Don’t ignore that suddenly cool or even rude attitude from someone close to you. Asking for an explanation could reveal a misunderstanding you were completely unaware of. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Unless you have sound knowledge, and not just an opinion, it’s best not to step into a family dispute involving a legal matter, regardless of whom you support. Leave that to the lawyers. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An awkward situation presents the usually socially savvy Scorpian with a problem. But a courteous and considerate approach soon helps clear the air and ease communication. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A calmer, less-tense atmosphere prevails through much of the week, allowing you to restore your energy levels before tackling a new challenge coming up by week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your approach to helping with a friend or family member’s problem could boomerang unless you take time to explain your method and how and why it (usually!) works. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Someone who gave you a lot of grief might ask for a chance for the two of you to make a fresh start. You need to weigh the sincerity of the request carefully before giving your answer. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Too much fantasizing about an upcoming decision could affect your judgment. Better to make your choices based on what you know now rather than on what you might learn later. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of seeing the best in people and helping them live up to their potential. (c) 2019 King Features Syndicate

Penny Saver Pet of the Week
Hello my name is Isa Baby! I am a male vanilla cream ball python with a big attitude! I am one year old, although I can live to about 20! My favorite thing to do is stare at Mom while I’m underneath my log hoping she’ll give me a snack. Sometimes if I’m having a bad day and want to be left alone I’ll hiss, but it’s all drama. I’ve never bitten anyone before. I’m a little bit shy around new people, but I love to give kisses!
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest & become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe. Come Valentine’s Day, candy, flowers and other gifts are exchanged between sweethearts in one of the many traditions associated with the holiday. The origins of Valentine’s Day are largely unknown. Some suggest Valentine’s Day was initially a way to honor St. Valentine on the anniversary of his death. Others believe it was the Christian church’s way of Christianizing the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. Regardless of its origins, Valentine’s Day is now celebrated by millions and is one of the retail industry’s most lucrative shopping holidays.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
The Benefits of Aspirin --DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently read an article on the pros and cons of a daily aspirin for protection against both heart disease and colon cancer. This is not a new topic, I realize, and I know that the benefits of daily aspirin apply only to certain segments of the population. Here’s my question: If a person doesn’t experience any stomach or bleeding issues, does a much higher dose of aspirin daily also convey the same possibly protective effects? I don’t believe that more is better, but I already take an average of nine 325 mg generic aspirin tablets daily for leg pain. I’m in that 50-59 age group, and there is heart disease on both sides of my family, so I’m hoping this dose confers some cardiac benefit. I would love to find a cure for the deep ache I get in my legs -usually just the right calf. I’ve had these since I was a child, and I’ve reconciled myself to the fact that I will have them for the rest of my life, but the aspirin I take has never caused me stomach pain or excessive bleeding, and it works for the pain. -- T.P. ANSWER: The studies showing that taking aspirin protects the heart mostly have been done using 81 mg daily or 325 mg every other day. However, the mechanism of the action, preventing platelets from forming a clot, is even stronger at higher doses, so it would make sense that higher doses would be at least as effective. However, they are much more likely to cause bleeding, even if most people can take higher doses without problems. So it’s recommended you take the minimum effective dose to get the benefit with the least harm. In your case, however, I think you are likely getting all the benefit there may be. I say “may be” because recent studies have failed to replicate the protection seen in earlier studies. I still believe that aspirin is useful in people at higher-than-average risk for heart disease. More and more evidence is coming out that the same low dose of aspirin helps protect against several forms of cancer, especially of the colon. However, I don’t yet recommend it just to protect against cancer, but I will continue to pay careful attention to ongoing studies on aspirin and will revisit this topic when more research becomes available. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent test, my blood vitamin D level was good, at 43, but my calcitriol level was low at 16. I do have hyperglycemia, but how do I increase my calcitriol level? I take no medications. -- J.I. ANSWER: If you don’t have kidney or parathyroid hormone problems, then calcitriol isn’t the right blood test to determine your bone health relative to vitamin D. Calcitriol is an activated form of vitamin D, and it best reflects calcium intake. I suspect low calcium intake when I see a high calcitriol. Since calcitriol removes calcium from the bones, it may worsen osteoporosis. If you haven’t had your kidneys and parathyroid hormone level (which also affects calcium movement in the kidney and bones) checked recently, then do so. If those are OK, then be sure to get enough calcium, especially from dietary sources like leafy green vegetables. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy MAKING THE NECESSARY ADJUSTMENTS When altering a tooth’s length, size, or shape to help make a smile more attractive, the dentist can make the necessary adjustments using a conservative cosmetic procedure known as “odontoplasty” Also known as “enamelplasty,” this relatively quick and painless procedure involves removing small amounts of tooth enamel to change the length or contours of the tooth. Aside from being an effective way to correct minor imperfections, odontoplasty can also improve overall dental health by removing crevices or overlapping features that may trap accumulations of decaycausing plaque and tartar. Once the dentist has changed (contoured) the length or shape of the tooth with a sanding disc or fine diamond burs, the procedure is completed by polishing the treated tooth.
We hope you won’t let chipped, discolored, stained, or otherwise less than perfect teeth keep you from smiling. There are many methods of cosmetic dentistry available today to turn your smile into one you’ll be proud to show. For odontoplasty and other innovative cosmetic avenues toward a happier smile, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for an appointment. We provide complete, state-of-the-art oral care in a friendly, relaxing environment at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. “Tooth recontouring” (tooth reshaping) can fix small chips in teeth, smooth out bulges or pits in tooth enamel, adjust the length of “canines,” or adjust slight irregularities among uneven teeth.

FeBREWary: Batavia, Beer & the Economy By Amanda Dudek
A
t 4pm on Saturday, February 23rd, BeerTavia will host FeBREWary, a Beer Walk in Downtown Batavia featuring the unique offerings of local breweries, cideries and meaderies. The event promises to be thoroughly enjoyable, with samples and offerings hosted by local businesses all throughout Downtown. This first Annual FeBREWary Downtown Batavia Beer Walk will take place during cooler temperatures, and guests are encouraged to bundle up as they travel through 25 of our local businesses to taste a variety of local Brews. Attending breweries will include Big Ditch Brewing Company, OSB Ciderworks, Swiftwater Brewing, Blue Toad Hard Cider - New York, Southern Tier Brewing Company, 810 Meadworks, Amber Lantern Brewing, Hamburg Brewing Company, WINDY BREW, Rohrbach Brewing Company, Ellicottville Brewery, and New York Beer Project. The benefits of events like Batavia’s FeBREWary Beer Walk extend far beyond discovering new favorite beverages. Local craft breweries and their more recently arrived cousins, cideries and meaderies, are benefiting their hometown economies in some expected and some unexpected ways. “When you think about the benefits of local craft breweries, think about places like Eli Fish in Batavia. The building they were in was vacant, and now they are there, and people are traveling into the area to visit them,” said Paul Leone, Executive Director of the New York State Brewers Association. “People want local beer. People want local food, particularly in areas like Batavia and the Finger Lakes. There are dozens of such examples in our areas [like Eli Fish], and when a brewery opens, typically a restaurant and other businesses open nearby. Speaking of Eli Fish, he added, “They are the classic example of moving into a vacant building and establishing a viable, long-term business. I bet you the vacant building next to it had a new business open in it now, too.”
Breweries, cideries and meaderies support local farmers and growers. industry has come back, and the hops industry has come back. This is something that didn’t exist before this boom. To the consumer, the more local the connection is, the better they like it.” This is excellent news to Paul Leone and the New York State Brewers Association. “For us, it is all about trying to get consumers to think local first because when you support the local economies and small businesses, you support your communities. That is what small towns were built on. Our motto is: “Think New York; Drink New York.” In fact, Paul Leone and the NYSBA work hard for New York’s newly booming industry. “We are the Association for the entire craft beer industry in New York State,” Leone explains. “We promote and protect craft beer in New York, and we work with legislators to develop laws to help the industry continue to grow. We are the trade association for craft beer.” A linger question, of course, is, “Are area industry businesses truly invested in supporting local economies?” The answer, overwhelmingly, is “Yes, they are.” Some businesses, such as Black Button Distilling, take supporting fellow local businesses and sourcing local products so seriously that very nearly every ingredient used in making their product comes from Upstate New York. Edgewood Farms, located right in Groveland, provides all their corn, barley, wheat and rye. Dairy cream is sourced from New York farms, and the apple cider they use is from LynOaken Farms in Medina. Black Button Farm & Forestry in South Bristol will grow juniper for gin, white oak to make their own bourbon barrels and fresh herbs and spices as well as organic honey for cocktails.
Leone explain that New York’s craft beer movement has been going strong for the past five years, and that he has seen a dramatic increase since he joined the association in 2013. “Five years ago, there were 105 breweries, now there are 427.” When reflecting on this extraordinary growth, Leone explained that one natural inhibitor of business expansion interestingly does not seem to apply in this industry. “The wonderful and unique thing in this industry, whether it is wineries, breweries, cideries, meaderies or distilleries, is that when you have two, three, four, five or however many of them close to each other, it is even better than one alone, even though they are competitors!” Leone went on to explain, “Someone may or may not travel out of their area to visit one brewery or winery, for example, but when there are several, it becomes a destination. People make a day of it. From an economic standpoint, that is the real impact.” Many of the businesses in this industry also go out of their way to source the ingredients for their products locally. Leone explains that this isn’t just about supporting local communities, it’s about responding to consumer demand, as well. “One could compare this industry to the food industry because people today are really interested in local and hyperlocal products,” says Leone. “In our area, the malt
Although it creates a slightly different product, the above distillery highlights the extent to which such businesses can generate a positive, widespread and diverse, economic impact. Many New York cideries, meaderies and breweries are making similar decisions when choosing their sources. Several businesses such as New York Beer Project and Windy Brew use local suppliers for their ingredients. Blue Toad Hard Cider of Rochester states that it uses New York apples from Western New York’s Ontario region, “from Williamson to Niagara,” and OSB Ciderworks of Lakeville echoes this use of local apples, adding that it utilizes other local ingredients, as well. (585) Still others, like 810 Meadworks of Medina, say they source as many ingredients locally as they can with the exception of citrus fruits and certain spices which are not grown locally, and Ellicottville Brewing Company of Ellicottville features what it calls using Farm-to-Pint, always fresh ingredients. Consider supporting these businesses as well as other local brewers-farmers, growers and a host of other merchant-by visiting Batavia’s FeBREWary Beer Walk and enjoying authentic, delicious New York flavors. HOW CHOCOLATE BECAME TIED TO VALENTINE’S DAY During the 17th century, chocolate consumption grew considerably across Europe. Chocolate houses cropped up in London, and the French elite often indulged in chocolate. Chocolate’s popularity continued to grow, but the dessert was not linked to Valentine’s Day until nearly 200 years later. In the mid-1800s, an enterprising individual named Richard Cadbury was looking for a way to make chocolate even more popular than it already was. He sought out a method to make drinking chocolate more palatable and created “eating chocolates.” These chocolates were packaged in decorative boxes. Eventually, Cadbury saw the benefit of putting images of cupids and roses on the boxes. Cadbury even designed chocolate boxes in the shape of hearts that could be saved as mementos. These chocolates soon became intertwined with Valentine’s Day celebrations.

HOW CHOCOLATE BECAME TIED TO VALENTINE’S DAY Milton Hershey dabbled in commercializing chocolate. Hershey began as a caramel maker, but experimented with covering the caramels in chocolate in 1894. Hershey would go on to develop one of the most successful brands of chocolate in the United States, which included the famous Hershey bar. In 1907, Hershey launched production of tear-drop shaped “kisses.” (The chocolates were given their unusual name because of the “smooching” noise made by the chocolate when being manufactured.) The kisses became wildly popular and made for affordable chocolate gifts on Valentine’s Day. Many other chocolate manufacturers soon began packaging their chocolates in special boxes for Valentine’s Day. Russell Stover and Whitmans are two such manufacturers who have long specialized in heart-shaped boxes or other decorative Valentine’s gifts.

It is seldom our good fortune to experience cares and problems that can be easily resolved by day’s end. However, it is best to make thoughtful and practical disposition of the cares of the day as quickly as possible. There is nothing more wearing and depressing than to greet the new day with the handicap of yesterday’s problems carried over. Whatever the nature of the problem.... big or small.... make an effort to work it out, solve it and then dismiss it from your mind. Prudent people have found peace of mind by arranging their own funeral services well in advance of need, in as much detail as they desire. This can include the cost and financing alternatives. Let us explain the advantages, without any obligation.

Your
New Brain Health Initiative Could Unlock Mysteries Of Alzheimer’s, Dementia (NAPS)—Scientists are contemplating important questions about health, mind and age: Could your blood hold the molecular secrets to a fountain of youth, preventing agerelated brain disorders? Are brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease caused by a failure of interconnected systems, triggering a dominolike cascade of disease? Can targeting the red blood cells and blood vessels jointly keep your brain healthy and prevent dementia? The Problem As people live longer, Alzheimer’s and other age-related dementias are on the rise, projected to reach more than 75 million people worldwide by 2030. To date, no effective therapy has been developed for these disorders, which are not only deadly but exact a high financial and emotional toll on society. The Research To find solutions, three large-scale research teams are exploring those questions as part of an initiative to merge research of the brain and the blood vessels to develop new understanding of—and, ultimately, better preventions and treatments for—age-related brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. The Scientists To help, American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health, and The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group, a division of the Allen Institute, launched the $43 million research project to bridge the science of vascular and brain health through revolutionary, out-of-the-box thinking. Additional supporters include the Oskar Fischer Project and the Henrietta B. and Frederick H. Bugher Foundation. The three teams, headquartered at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif.; Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, Calif.; and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in Cleveland, OH, respectively, work to develop new solutions to the urgent problem of age-related cognitive decline. The researchers are: • “Rusty” Gage, Ph.D., a neuroscience researcher and president of Salk, who will lead an eight-year project looking into new targets for therapeutic research and biomarkers of early-stage cognitive decline. • Tony Wyss-Coray, Ph.D., a professor of neurology at Stanford, who will lead a four-year project studying how changes in the immune system affect cognitive health. • Mukesh K. Jain, M.D., a cardiologist at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, who will lead a team of investigators on a four-year project investigating whether targeting red blood cells and blood vessels can prevent dementia. The Hope The research could yield transformational discoveries to better detect, treat and prevent cognitive decline. Scientists are seeking answers to important questions about how to preserve your mind over time.

to get their mail!!! Then leave them in the road to die!!! Just 1 example of the INSANITY on the roads today!!! Slow Down and L-I-V-E!!! Why does the [local town] Police Dept. publish all the people arrested in their weekly “Police Report”? I am honestly wondering why this is done. Driving today is scary! My opinion on this is BAN SUPER ENERGY DRINKS like they do alcohol!!! Think about it. Every convenience store has them as well as grocery stores etc. So, stop in and get your “Fix” so you can run over people just going out
Not a “vent” - not a “brighter” - just some suggestions. For the New Year: Try some patience, friendly smiles, helpfulness toward others. Please, thank you, excuse me - these all go a long way in dealing with
others. With so many problems in the world, we can all use a little peace & joy! I was recently sideswiped by a white box-type delivery truck. After the truck hit me, it continued down the road without stopping. There is over $5000 damage to my car. There were several witnesses to the accident, but no one stopped to ask if I needed help. I know there are several witnesses that could help to identify the truck. I guess this is where we are today. No one wants to get involved. It’s a sad day for this country. I took the family to the Capital over the holidays. At the Holocaust Museum
there are several exhibits of the concentration camps. While viewing a picture of children wearing prison uniforms, behind a wire fence, skinny and sickly looking, my 8-year-old turned to me and asked: “What did they do to be put in there?” The children in this camp were about my child’s age. I didn’t want him to fear that this could ever happen to him. I told him they didn’t do anything wrong. There were a lot of problems in the country and the leader didn’t want to be blamed, so he blamed outsiders: the Jews. He put them in the camps and let them die. Then my child asked: ”How could the good people let this happen?”
Brighter Side Congratulations to all the hardworking volunteers at the Henrietta Library Book Shop, the Shop is opening again and we can’t wait to see you all, we missed you. A special thanks to Adrienne and Brigid for making the reopening happen! I would like to tip my hat to outgoing Clarkson Town Supervisor Jerry Underwood. Jerry served his post with class, dignity and honor. Have you heard of any other Town Supervisors who would give up their first-year salary to keep their public library going? Or attend to a citizen’s concerns about road
repair and snow plowing? Or investigate energy sources that would be cheaper and cleaner for the Town? I wish Jerry all the best and that he will consider a future position in public service again. Many thanks to Rick Falker, Service Advisor at Bob Johnson Chevrolet, who provided such prompt and courteous service on my 2016 Malibu on January 10th. The Joseph Gallipeau Avon American Legion Post #294 would like tothank Avondale Pub, Town
of Avon and Avon Tops Friendly Markets for their continued support. Many thanks to Mike for helping us all out in the winter. He helps all of us during the storms, without pay, always with a smile. We don’t ask him, he just shows up!! Some of us older senior citizens really appreciate it. THANKS MIKE!! Scottsville and Wheatland and God Bless You, Your the job you people did this LeRoy neighborhood weekend was outstanding and enabled me to get my papers to I want to give a special my customers. I have lived and shout out to the Wheatland Highway Dept. for their great delivered papers here for years job keeping our roads clear and and your efforts are greatly passable during this latest storm. appreciated!! THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.
