There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic. “On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.” He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year. Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard. If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price. Learn More: For further facts and advice, go to www.windownation.com. REAL ESTATE

THE BIBLE SAYS “For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.” (Isaiah 54:5) “Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” (Isaiah 55:3,6,7) “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” (Isaiah 55:1)

CRUISING TIPS AND TRICKS: Book at the right time.

GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED • Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place.

Cruises may be more available after Labor Day when kids go back to school and the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas when others are too busy to travel.

• Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

Blackberry-Ripple Lime Cheesecake Serves 10 Crust 11⁄2 cups pecans 2 tablespoons sugar 1⁄4 cup (1⁄2 stick) unsalted butter, melted Filling 2 6-ounce packages ripe blackberries 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar 1 teaspoon cornstarch 11⁄2 pounds cream cheese, at room temperature 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk 2 teaspoons finely grated lime zest 1⁄4 cup fresh lime juice 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 3 large eggs, at room temperature 1. Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat the oven to 350 F. Generously butter the bottom and sides of a 9-inch springform pan. 2. To make the crust: Pulse the pecans, flour and sugar in a food processor until the nuts are finely ground. Add the butter and pulse just until combined. Press the crust evenly over the bottom and 1 inch up the sides of the pan. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until light brown. Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely. Reduce the oven temperature to 300 F. 3. To make the filling: Mash the blackberries and sugar together in a medium saucepan with a pastry blender or a fork. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the berries begin to release their juices. Stir in the cornstarch, bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, and boil for 1 minute. Pour the purée through a coarse strainer set over a small bowl, pressing hard on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Refrigerate, tightly covered, until thoroughly chilled. 4. With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat the cream cheese in a large bowl for about 2 minutes, until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the condensed milk, zest, lime juice, and vanilla, scraping down the side of the bowl as necessary. Reduce the speed to medium and add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Pour the batter into the pan. 5. Transfer the blackberry purée to a small glass measure. Drizzle it in a spiral pattern over the batter, then swirl a table knife through the batter to marbleize it. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, until the cheesecake is puffed on the sides and still slightly jiggly in the center. Let cool on a wire rack. 6. Refrigerate the cheesecake, tightly covered, for at least 8 hours, until thoroughly chilled and set, or for up to 2 days. 7. To serve, run a sharp knife around the edge of the pan to loosen the cake and remove the side of the pan. Cut the cheesecake into thin wedges with a sharp knife dipped into hot water and wiped dry after each cut.

“The follish person seeks happiness in the distance; the wise person grows it under his feet.....” ~ James Oppenheim

It takes a certain amount of maturity and wisdom to realize that the grass is NOT always greener in the other fellow’s yard, even though young men have traditionally gone to distant places to seek their fortune. It is easy to deplore the lack of opportunity near to home. We know the situation here and we see no easy way to fame and fortune, so we may look to faraway places. The wisest among us looks for, and often finds, whatever he wants… including happiness… at home, right under his feet. We are always available to help, whether with pre-need planning or at the time of need. You can depend on us for the kind of help and advice you would expect from a trusted friend.

RELEASE, REFRESH, RESET (NAPSI)—You don’t have to let a busy schedule break your healthy stride or keep you from crushing your goals. You can regroup on your approach instead. By incorporating these three ways to release, refresh and reset, you can still make health a priority.

768-7370 8375 E. Main Rd., LeRoy

1. Release Your Mind by Escaping into Nature. Getting out into nature gives you the space and peace to release the things that bog you down. Escape the rush. Try camping in the wilderness or taking a scenic hike. Studies show that surrounding yourself with nature can have positive effects on mental health. Ditch the office and try working outdoors at a picnic table or on a blanket in the grass. Wherever you go, whatever you do, sit back and breathe in the fresh air. 2. Refresh Your Exercise Routine with New Moves. Inspiration derives from new experiences, which is why exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor Tom Holland recommends mixing up your daily workout routine. “Give yourself the opportunity to explore and challenge yourself in new ways,” suggests Holland. Try a new workout program, or an exercise machine that moves you in new ways, such as the breakthrough Bowflex LateralX (www.bowflex.com/lateralx) cardio machine. It strengthens and activates muscles with side-to-side, pushand-pull and stand-and-squat motions that target the arms, back, hips and core, as well as common trouble spots including glutes, hamstrings and quads. By moving in all directions, you mimic everyday activities such as yard work, housecleaning or chasing after your kids. It’s a new and exciting workout that can keep you motivated. 3. Reset Your Soul with Time for Yourself. In addition to carving out time for fitness, you need to make time for yourself. Creating positive energy in a chaotic world can be challenging but it’s important for overall health and well-being. You don’t have to be a yogi to meditate. Experts say to start small—try focusing for 10 minutes a day in a quiet place and don’t get frustrated if your mind wanders. It takes practice but the benefits are worth the investment. You may find you’re more calm and productive and you sleep better. Whatever helps you reset, create time in your schedule and act on it. You owe it to yourself. AUTOMOTIVE

M any elements of vehicle maintenance become second nature to drivers once they have a few months of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars runn ing smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers remember to maintain their headlights, a potentiall y dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of drivers and their fellow motorists.

A LASTING TRIBUTE TO AMERICAN SOLDIERS (NAPSI)—More than 30 million Americans have served in the United States Army. If you or someone you care about is among them, you can now order a personalized, commemorative brick that will be permanently placed along the pathway to the future National Museum of the United States Army. Making a Museum The National Army Museum is rapidly taking shape at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, just south of Washington, D.C. This national landmark will be the first museum to tell the entire history of the nation’s oldest and largest military service. The massive 185,000-square-foot building will display a collection of Army artifacts, historic documents, and Soldier artwork. The vast majority of these priceless selections have never been seen by the public. “For those who served, the Museum will provide a place of reflection,” said retired Army Chief of Staff, General Gordon R. Sullivan, chairman of the Army Historical Foundation. “For the rest of America, it will be an educational institution that conveys American history through the eyes and stories of Soldiers, teaching our nation how the U.S. Army has shaped nearly every major event in our country’s history.” In the two years since groundbreaking, the building’s frame has been completed, and crews have installed the stainless-steel panels that make up its exterior. Inside, the circular walls of the 300-degree Army Theater are set, and four of the Museum’s largest artifacts are in place. How You Can Be a Part of It The U.S. Army designated the nonprofit Army Historical Foundation to lead the campaign to build the Museum. The Foundation developed the Commemorative Brick Program to raise funds for construction and offer serving Soldiers and Army veterans and their families a way to forever be part of the historic national landmark. The personalized bricks are currently being installed along the pathway leading to the Museum’s main entrance. Made of Mesabi Black granite, the impressive tributes will set the stage for the Museum experience. Individuals and organizations can still order bricks at www.armyhistory. org/bricks. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Professional relationships grow stronger. But you might still need to ease some problems with someone in your personal life. One way could be to try to be less rigid in your views. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might be too close to that perplexing personal situation to even attempt to make a rational decision about it right now. Stepping back could help you gain a wider perspective. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Being asked to choose between the positions of two friends is an unfair imposition on you. It’s best to reject the “demands” and insist they try harder to work things out on their own. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A change of mind about a workplace decision might be called for once you hear more arguments, pro and con. A personal event suddenly takes an unexpected (but pleasant!) turn. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Romance once again looms large for single Leos and Leonas, with Cupid favoring Taurus and Libra to inspire those warm and fuzzy Leonine feelings. Expect another workplace change. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A surprise gift -- and, happily, with no strings attached -- could come just when you need it to avoid a delay in getting your project done. Expect education to dominate the week. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Someone close to you might ask for your support as she or he faces a demanding personal challenge. Offer it, by all means. But be careful you don’t neglect your own needs at this time. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An unexpected development could put your relationship with a partner or spouse to an emotionally demanding test. But your determination to get to the truth should save the day. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A recent agreement appears to be coming apart over the surfacing of unexpected complications. You might need to have expert advice on how to resolve the situation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your keen business sense helps you get to the truth about a suspicious business deal. Expect to have many colleagues rally to support your efforts in this important matter. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Someone who once moved in and out of your life through the years might now want to come back in on a more permanent basis. Give yourself a lot of time to weigh your decision. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Showing frustration over a delayed workplace decision might get someone’s attention, but not necessarily make him or her move any sooner. Best advice would be to be patient and wait it out. BORN THIS WEEK: You are drawn to excitement and enjoy fast-tempo music, with the more brass, the better. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Farmers Give Back Project Prepares to Feed Families for Its 13th Year By Amanda Dudek well.” The project also looks beyond the numbers. “Most charities require people to show that they receive government assistance if they ask for help; we don’t,” Jodi explained. “Every person has needs for different reasons.” 2018 was their biggest year yet. “Last year and the year before, we reached 7 counties,” said Jodi. “This included donating to homeless shelters, food pantries, churches who do food kitchens, Friends Feeding Friends out of Buffalo and vans that travel to homeless encampments.” Beau Teed Farm hasn’t forgotten its neighbors either. “We try to find people to give to in Livingston County, too,” Jodi said. “We are very proud to have helped 32 families last year.” Jodi & St Stevenn Teed with produce duce for f the Farmers Fa Give Back Project. Proje

J

odi Teed of Beau Teed Farm has given us yet another reason to thank local farmers. In 2006, Jodi Teed began what has become the Farmers Give Back Project. For the past 12 years, Jodi and Beau Teed Farm have provided produce and meat products to area food pantries as well as directly to families in need. “My husband and I bought this farm 20 years ago,” said Jodi. Jodi’s family has a strong background in farming, and her husband had worked on a neighboring farm throughout high school. “We started growing and raising our own food, and when we had extra, we would donate it to places like the Open Door Mission in Rochester and the Honeoye Food Pantry. We just kept adding places!” Jodi explained that giving really opened her eyes to an ongoing need. “Places like food pantries have needs I didn’t expect,” Jodi shared. “For example, it is right after Thanksgiving that many food pantries are hit hardest. Also, food pantries do not often receive fresh food,” she added. “A lot of the donated foods are canned.” This realization led Jodi and her husband, Steven, to redouble their efforts. “We started donating more and more,” Jodi said, enthusiastically. “After we would pick and sort food, selling Grade A produce to stores and restaurants, we always had plenty of good produce left over.” Beau Teed Farm began donating chickens, turkeys at Thanksgiving and loads of produce. Things really took off when the idea caught on with other area farmers. “I remember it was Giving Tuesday,” said Jodi, referring to the philanthropy-focused Tuesday following Thanksgiving. “We had received a message through Facebook which featured Bill Gates asking, ‘What can you do to make a difference?’ That really resonated with me.” Jodi said she immediately called up a farmer friend in Elba and explained how her Farmers Give Back Project works. They were eager to participate. “We sent a truck over there, and they filled it up!” exclaimed Jodi. Jodi recalled another generous farm, DeGroff ’s of Castile, which offered them squash. When they arrived, they found 80 bushels of it. “By that Saturday, I had all kinds of vegetables from all over Western New York,” added Jodi. The Project only continued to grow from there. “We donate all kinds of fresh food from our farm,” said Jodi. “Including fresh veggies like potatoes that last well in cold storage. The Monks of the Abbey of the Genesee donated 600 loaves of bread,” Jodi continued. “Marquart Farm brought us several pallets containing over 1,000 bags of family size potato chips. Star Growers, owned by long-time friends, the Starowitz family, donated, and we received apples from two farms. Another farm, owned by the Casper family, donated beef.”

Area farmers have also stepped up generously. “Last year, we had people throughout 7 counties contributing just because we made phone calls asking for help,” Jodi stated gratefully. “DeGroff donated over 100 bushels of produce last year. Monks Bread works with us, and they are awesome,” Jodi continued. “They always help us with charity bread whenever there is a need. In addition, Casper’s Farm donated several boxes of packaged hamburger to us.” Jodi said there are so many additional farms and friends who have donated and participated, and while they cannot name them all, they are so grateful for people’s outstanding generosity.

We are making a difference!

“We provide a great opportunity to learn about growing healthy produce,” added Jodi, passionate about food-related education. “We - Jodi Teed also help families learn how to cook it. We now include recipe cards in our food packages, especially for things like cabbage,” Jodi said. “We even put together a small recipe book this past year.”

“Our biggest need this year is volunteers,” shared Jodi. “My husband works, and I have physical limitations. We really need more help.” This year, Jodi hopes the Farmers Give Back Project will grow even more. “We are looking for people to help with planting, weeding, picking, gardening, tractor maintenance and food delivery,” Jodi explained. “We need weekly and biweekly help throughout the growing season. The hours are extremely flexible. We have seeds that have already been donated to get us going this year. We are making a difference, and we would like 2019 to be our biggest year yet.” For more information on the Farmers Give Back Project, please call Jodi Lyn Beaumont Teed at (585) 313-3219. (NAPS)—Many retirees and others looking for extra income consider what’s known as multilevel marketing (MLM) or network marketing. It’s a type of direct selling where products are purchased from a company and sold through independent contractors. These contractors make commissions from what they sell, and from sales made by people they recruit. It doesn’t always work out the way they hope, however, according to a new survey from AARP Foundation, the affiliated charity of AARP. A few facts and hints may help: • Among the more than 20 million Americans who have participated in MLM organizations, 90 percent got involved to make money. • Nearly half lost money. • A quarter made no money. • Two-thirds would not join the same or another MLM organization again. • 39 percent stopped participating because it felt awkward to pitch to friends and family. • Four out of 10 say the company misled them about their chances for financial success. • MLM participants are primarily women with college degrees. • One-third were recruited by a friend and 12 percent by a family member. “We have witnessed many of our constituents joining these organizations, sometimes to their financial detriment. We want consumers to become better educated about MLMs before they invest valuable time and resources,” said Amy Nofziger, Program Director with AARP Foundation. To help, AARP Foundation suggests these four things: 1. Set your expectations and understand the costs. Recognize that MLMs require patience, persistence, and an investment of time and money. Make sure you’re clear on what you expect to get out of participating and what’s expected of you from the MLM. 2. Do your research. Thoroughly investigate the company. Visit the websites of the Better Business Bureau and Federal Trade Commission to see if there are any complaints about the company. Speak to current representatives and recent participants. Conduct an online search of the company name featuring keywords such as “work hours” and “incentives” to see what others are saying. 3. Get comfortable with selling. How do you feel about having business conversations with close friends and family? 4. Can you afford startup costs? Are you OK taking risks with your money? Learn More For further tips, resources and educational videos, and to download the toolkit “Multilevel Marketing: The Research, Risks and Rewards,” visit www.aarp.org/MLMaware. Beore you take up network marketing, there are a few steps to consider.

MAKE MEALTIME MORE ECO-FRIENDLY An eco-friendly lifestyle is anything but selfless, as such a way of life can pay both immediate and long-term dividends, helping men and women in the present day while also contributing to healthier futures for generations to come.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Familiar faces: Some diners enjoy being a “regular” at their favorite local restaurants. Local dining spots also become gathering locations for residents in the know, instead of passing-through tourists or commuters.

Stop handwashing dishes. Men and women who dread having to hand wash their dishes after a nice meal have an ally in science. A study from researchers in Europe found that people who handwashed place settings for 12 people used as much as 27 gallons of water, while washing the same amount of place settings in a dishwasher required just four gallons of water. So instead of standing over a sink and washing dishes by hand each night, men and women can simply load up the dishwasher, making sure only to run it when it’s full so even less water is wasted. Avoid the stove when possible. Empty nesters, couples without children or single men and women who want to save energy come mealtime can use toaster ovens in lieu of traditional stoves when preparing small meals. According to EnergyStar®, toaster ovens consume between onethird to one-half the amount of energy as conventional electric ovens when cooking small meals, making them a far more eco-friendly option for men and women accustomed who typically cook small meals for one or two people.

Shop with reusable shopping bags. Cooks know that great meals begin at the grocery store, so there’s no reason why eco-friendly cooking cannot begin there as well. Estimates suggest that as many as 100 billion plastic bags are used in the United States alone each year. EnvironmentMassachusetts reports that such bags are used for an average of 12 minutes, even though their life expectancy is as high as 1,000 years. By relying on reusable cloth shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags, shoppers can dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of cooking their own meals. Recycle materials. Glass jars, plastic butter tubs, milk cartons, and other items necessary to prepare meals at home are all recyclable. Many local governments have weekly if not biweekly pickups of recyclable materials, making it easier than ever to ensure these items are given new life after being used. Men and women who reside in areas without such pickups can go it alone, collecting recyclable materials and periodically transporting them to nearby recycling centers. Mealtime provides a host of opportunities for eco-conscious men and women to embrace practices that protect the planet.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO ACHIEVE A HEALTHY WEIGHT (NAPSI)—People often think of the New Year as a time to set new goals for healthy eating and physical activity. But weight management requires ongoing effort, during the holidays and every day. That’s why the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health, is promoting simple tips and tools to help Americans start and maintain healthy habits. “Why wait to start improving your health when you can start today?” NIDDK Director Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers said in a statement. “It’s never too soon or too late to achieve a healthy weight.” Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight through healthy food choices and regular physical activity may help lower the risk of developing health problems associated with obesity, such as heart disease, kidney disease and Type 2 diabetes. About 40 percent of adults and 19 percent of children and teens in the United States have obesity, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Continue or establish healthier eating habits, such as reducing the overall calories you consume and limiting your intake of foods and beverages with added sugars, fats and salt. Bringing healthier versions of your favorite dishes to holiday gatherings, and choosing smaller portions of holiday treats and alcohol, may help with managing weight during this time of year. The NIDDK recommends making physical activity a priority for the whole family. Choosing a set time for physical activity and sticking to it may help you manage stress, improve your mood, and give you the energy to tackle your busy schedule. If it’s too cold to walk or run outdoors, take your workout to your favorite mall or indoor sports field. Even if you’re pressed for time, doing some physical activity is better than skipping your workout and doing nothing. Another tip to consider during the holiday season and every day to improve health and manage weight is to reduce screen time and time spent sitting. Watching TV for more than two hours a day has been linked to overweight and obesity. Try creating a holiday-themed playlist and having a dance party. You can have fun dancing alone or with family or friends. To further encourage adults and youth to be active, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also recently released new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The new Guidelines recommend that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week, such as brisk walking or dancing. Youth ages six through 17 need one hour each day, and children ages three through six should be active throughout the day.

Affordable Dental Implant Solve Your Dental Problem Schedule A Free Consultation Do you have missing teeth? Eastman Dental can help. By establishing and sticking to healthy habits, parents, caregivers and youth may achieve better health together during the holiday season and beyond. ‘Burning’ Tattoo Forces Halt to MRI

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 (Near the Re/Max building)

Henrietta • 585.359.4987

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you please explain how an MRI machine affects the pigment in a tattoo? My friend’s MRI procedure was stopped because she was experiencing a burning sensation at her lower eyelids, which had previously been tattooed with black ink. Does this happen only with black ink? Which colors are safer? -- J.H. ANSWER: Reactions between the ink in tattoos and MRI scanners are well-documented in the literature. Some inks -- mostly black, red and brown -- are made with iron or titanium oxides. Only 1.5 percent of people with tattoos have reported bad experiences in MRI machines. Iron and titanium oxides conduct electricity, and the strong magnetic field in an MRI scanner can cause a current to travel between different tattoos or different portions of a tattoo -especially those with loops in the pattern. The electric current causes heat, and even can cause minor burns. Cold packs or ice placed on the area during MRI can minimize damage, but some MRI facilities will not perform an MRI on tattooed individuals, especially if the tattoo covers a large area. If a magnet draws up the skin with a tattoo, then that area is at risk.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently was diagnosed with transient global amnesia. I had never heard of this. My primary care doctor sent me for further testing, which included an MRI and MRA with contrast, and a CT scan. All were normal. Can you elaborate on this condition? -- M.T.M. ANSWER: Transient global amnesia is a cause of retrograde amnesia (“retrograde” meaning you don’t remember things from the past, usually the past day to a month, but sometimes longer; “anterograde” means memory loss forward from the time of the event). Its cause is unknown, but it occurs more frequently in men and women over 50. Your doctor ordered the appropriate tests to make sure it wasn’t a transient ischemic attack or stroke. Epilepsy sometimes can look similar to TGA, so sometimes an EEG is obtained. As scary as it sounds, TGA usually doesn’t happen again and doesn’t predict a higher risk of developing memory troubles, stroke or epilepsy in the future. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife has COPD. She is not coping very well. Her doctors are treating her with the standard medications. She has heard about an experimental treatment where they take her stem cells and make them into something that is inhaled. Have you heard about this treatment? Is it safe? Each treatment is $7,000. -- J.W. ANSWER: Stem cells are cells that can develop into many kinds of mature cells. In theory, they can grow and replace cells that have been damaged or destroyed due to a disease process. Stem cells hold great promise for many diseases, but there isn’t enough information for me to make a recommendation for stem cells in COPD, for either safety or effectiveness. If you are going to look into it further, I would recommend doing so only as part of a clinical trial. You can find out about clinical trials at www.clinicaltrials.gov. I was able to find some trials on the site that are recruiting subjects. I also would recommend www.closerlookatstemcells.org/ to anyone considering stem cell treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. We Care About ut

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy BAD BREATH AND GUM DISEASE Bad breath (“halitosis”) is commonly associated with gum disease in all its various forms. In gum disease’s early stages, characterized by bleeding gums, a buildup of the sticky bacterial film called “plaque” eventually causes “pockets” to form between teeth and gums. As food particles become trapped in these pockets, breath begins to smell like rotten eggs or rotten cabbage. As gum disease worsens, bacteria that grow in the absence of oxygen (called “anaerobes”) may indicate that gum disease is worsening. At this point, inflammation from bleeding gums provides a nastier set of “anaerobic” bacteria that feed on blood and immune cells. This stage of more serious gum disease is characterized by bad breath that tastes metallic and smells putrid.

However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

Stripe smut The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought.

585-409-6509 MAXIMIZE EARNING POTENTIAL WITH VACATION RENTAL PROPERTIES (NAPSI)—It is often said that, in real estate, it’s all about “location, location, location.” However, when it comes to rental properties, the key to maximizing their potential is all about “timing, timing, timing.” New vacation home rental industry data shows early fall is the ideal time to buy a property to quickly turn the investment into profit. Here’s why: • In order to plan ahead for spring and summer trips, many travelers book their vacation rental accommodations in January and February, according to a survey of vacation rental owners conducted by vacation rental website VRBO. • Meanwhile, Quicken Loans data shows it takes about 155 days to shop for a new vacation home, purchase it, and get the newly acquired property ready.

Turn your refund into fun!

This means a prospective vacation homeowner should shop at least five months before vacation rentals’ busy booking season in January and February to get everything prepared to rent to travelers looking for the comforts of a whole home, whether it’s a beachfront condo or a cozy mountain cabin. “We often see, at this time of year after travelers have wrapped up their summer trips, that they wish they had a vacation home of their own to return to next year,” says Bill Furlong, vice president of HomeAway, Americas. “This schedule may not follow traditional trends of the real estate calendar, but early fall is the right time to buy so preparations can be done by January, when people search for next summer’s vacation rental.” A survey of vacation rental owners who list with HomeAway and VRBO shows that more than half of them say they can cover 75 percent or more of their mortgage payments each year from rental income.ii For those interested in getting into the burgeoning vacation rental business, VRBO’s Earn Tool can help them evaluate how much a specific property can potentially earn through vacation rental income. By visiting www. vrbo.com/earn and entering the vacation home’s address and basic property information, current and aspiring vacation homeowners can get an estimate of annual rental income potential based on comparable properties already successfully renting on VRBO. “The popularity of vacation rentals continues to grow each year,” says Furlong. “An early start and an informed shopping experience with the help of VRBO’s Earn Tool can create a significant financial opportunity for those looking to enter the vacation rental industry.” GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We have gone to [local store] in [local town] for years. They hire many new young cashiers there frequently. Most of the workers are polite and kind. A month ago, my husband and I were in line and there was a new young female cashier attending. When we reached the front of the line, my husband had walked clear away from the register where I was paying for the items. The cashier turned clear around to him with her back to me and gave him an inappropriate flirtatious “hi”, turned back around to ring up our items and

Our sincere gratitude and thanks to those who offered their assistance at Eddie O’Brien’s restaurant in Canandaigua last Sunday. My husband suffered a sudden seizure and lost consciousness due to a recently diagnosed medical condition. We wish to thank the restaurant staff who quickly called 911 and the kind and caring patrons at the next table who offered their comfort and support. The Canandaigua Emergency Squad arrived quickly. They were wonderful; professional and caring while transporting him to the hospital. We deeply appreciate your help.

To the person who complained about being wished “a happy holiday:” I read several objections to your comments. One said you should not say Merry Christmas as you may offend someone. Another said you are being insensitive and disrespectful. I applaud you for saying Merry Christmas. For those who wish to change the way we or the large percentage of people living in the U.S. acknowledge the spirit of the season, I say toughen up! Political correctness is insensitive to the majority of us Americans.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Maintaining energy throughout the workday can sometimes be difficult. For busy professionals, compromised energy levels can be especially problematic, causing workers to fall behind and maybe even forcing them to work extra hours just to catch up. While infrequent days of low energy should not pose too great a threat, working professionals who routinely find their energy levels sagging by the end of the workday might want to take certain steps to boost their energy and ensure their productivity doesn’t wane.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is no small task for today’s working parents. But such a goal is possible.
