Beat the heat during a summer wedding Wear breathable fabrics. Opt for lightweight fabrics instead of heavy gowns and full tuxedos for the bride, groom and wedding party. Cotton and linen allow air to flow through clothing, helping people to stay cool. Light colors also will help deflect the sun. Bridal gowns made of chiffon, silk or satin may feel luxurious and help tame the heat.

Y’all have become my extended family. We have shared oh so many funny, sad, happy stories…and not always about our furbabies! You have stood by me thru my cancer treatment, while caring for my infant granddaughter - which put your pet’s grooming behind a bit, sudden schedule changes for family reasons and all without complaint. You have been awesome clients. And your furbabies have left paw prints on my heart. I have enjoyed our time together and am sorry it is ending so soon. Thank you for your many years of loyalty and friendship. I am hopeful that my shop will not close. I am in contact with a groomer who is interested in taking over. Please give him a chance, just as you gave me a chance.

Did You Know? Animals verbalize in many different ways to communicate. One thing cat owners may notice is that cats have a tendency to meow as a form of speaking with humans. However, according to the North Shore Animal League America, cats almost never meow at other cats, as meowing is a sound generally reserved for interacting with humans. Cat owners should talk back to their cats often, as cats enjoy hearing their own names and their owners’ voices.

REASONS TO CLEAN YOUR CAR (NAPSI)—If any of the more than 260 million cars in America is yours, here’s important advice: Keep it clean.
Third, it’s not safe to drive with dirt, bugs and debris covering the windows, especially at night. Fourth, you increase your car’s trade-in value.

www.landltransmissions.com The spirit that inspires travelers to take to the open road still exists, but nowadays drivers can make their road trips even more fun by taking along the appropriate tech.
Fortunately, it’s easy to avoid these problems. A U.S.-based company makes car-cleaning pads that work with just car wash soap and water to remove bugs, dirt, grime, minor road tar, bird droppings and so on.
Top Dollar Paid for Cars & Trucks $$ Good Runners or Junkers
There’s no need for separate bug removers, glass cleaners, sponges, tar removers, clay bars and the like and there are no chemicals or detergents in the reusable pads.

Each year the Oatka Festival, held on the banks of the scenic Oatka Creek, starts off with a gala musical parade. Many local churches and organizations provide the food choices and the continuous entertainment is family oriented. Another highlight of the Festival is the arts and crafts show overlooking the scenic Oatka Creek. Many classes and families plan their reunions to coincide with the weekend and there is a “coming-home atmosphere” for all who attend.

A shout out to Edgar at Cameron Community Ministries!! This organization is an urban outreach community center in the Lyell-Otis Neighborhood of Rochester, NY where 98% of residents in the neighborhood live in poverty. My husband and I had bicycles that we no longer rode and wanted to donate. We contacted Edgar who indicated that he knew of people who could use them. We set up a drop off time and were met by two guys who unloaded them from our vehicle. Within an hour after we dropped them off Edgar sent us an email indicating that the bicycles had already been spoken for. We appreciate Edgar’s willingness to help us give our
Mind your language!! I recently attended a local festival at a park. I'll get straight to the point. There were about 20+ teens playing basketball on a court at the park, and they were swearing like sailors! Using every cuss word available! From the F word to the N word. Let me remind you that there were families at the park that day, with 4 and 7 yr olds! Can we please mind our
bicycles directly to individuals who needed them. Thank you to the staff at Genesee Valley Penny Saver! You folks are wonderful! Love my Penny Saver! Thank you to Jim and Julie for letting us use your pool. You guys are wonderful neighbors and we’re so lucky to have you - year ‘round! The B Family Thank you to Maria’s Sunshine and Dreams Fund, your organization is a beautiful representation of everything Maria was passionate about in
language out in public?? Not only do the words imprint in little ones’ minds, it also makes a very bad first impression for you. It makes you look like disrespectful, immature teens. What happened to teaching your kids manners?? Hey....landlords who own property on 'the hill'...your rentals need TLC! PLEASE take the time to clean and spruce them up! They could definitely use some paint and the windows and porches are in desperate need of repair. Take some pride in the way they look. You reside at an upscale apartment complex, but apparently lack the common sense & decency, or of just being a good neighbor when you walk your dog to do his business, and then after bagging it, instead of taking it with you, you walk over to a nearby restaurant, and toss it
life. The foundation has truly blessed us and our family beyond what we could have imagined. We are grateful for the many people involved in the foundation who selflessly give their time and energy to help kids and their families who have fallen into times of unexpected medical struggles. A Sunshine Recipient Thank you to Miguel at the Hook and Spoon for his exceptional customer service. He ran out to the docks to help us safely dock our boat, then went out of his way to serve this pregnant lady a delicious frozen
in the outside trash container. Not sure what you are thinking, if anything, as people enter, and eat near here. We see who you are, and can identify you. We have notified management, and they are now aware of your little scheme. You should be ashamed. Response to vent about married women's last name. Why is it anyone else's business what last name a married woman chooses? I never changed my name when I married 35 years ago, and neither did my husband. Women are not men's property. Marriage is a partnership of equals. Believe me, you can file your income tax jointly using both names, and sometimes the woman is the primary wage earner too! Live and let live. I just moved here & can't believe [local] Street. I can count at least 30 vehicles per hour racing past without a muffler! We

can't hear ourselves talk inside our own house. I do hope the police start doing something about this, IT IS PART OF EVERYONE'S INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS. Then there are 30 to 50 vehicles every 15 minutes that don't stop at [local] St. I even called the gas company about one of their trucks going right through, only because there was a school bus that had the rightof-way but luckily stopped & waited. If police would just monitor that intersection, [town] could be RICH...! Response to vent about riding with your kids on tractors. It is none of your business if I want to take a child on the tractor, I will. If you feel that you are not steady enough to do so, then don't. Don't spy on people just to make sure they are up to your standards. We just had a fence put up to protect ourselves from people like you. Have a nice day!!!!!!!

CONNECTING CAREGIVERS TO LOCAL RESOURCES AND SUPPORT (NAPSI)—Americans are living longer these days. The number of older adults is expected to reach 73 million by 2030. With 30 percent of Americans serving in a caregiving role, it is important to remember that caring for a loved one can be both rewarding and difficult. Often, caregivers don’t know where to turn for advice and assistance. That’s where the Eldercare Locator—a program of the U.S. Administration on Aging and administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a)—Comes in. By connecting older adults and their caregivers to local resources and support, the Eldercare Locator makes life a bit easier all around. The Eldercare Locator connects older adults and their caregivers to local services and supports across the spectrum of need, including in-home and community-based services, transportation and healthy aging. What It Offers Some of the Eldercare Locator’s more popular publications are: • “Before You Give Up the Keys: Create a Roadmap for Transportation Independence” • “Older Adults and Medication Safety” • “You Gave, Now Save: Guide to Benefits for Seniors” • “Living Well with Dementia in the Community: Resources and Support.” Learn More: For tips and advice on caregiving, visit www.eldercare.acl.gov or call 1 (800) 677-1116 and see @eldercarelocator on Facebook and @EldercareLoc on Twitter.

Life for each of us is certain to consist of both pleasant and unpleasant things. We wish we were free of all the unpleasantness which could be anything from an unfortunate physical characteristic to our economic circumstances or other attribute over which we have no control. We could go through life in bondage to this situation, avoiding it as much as possible. Or, we can free ourselves by facing up to the facts and recognizing that we must simply live through it.... and then refuse to worry about it! By making all their own funeral arrangements themselves, well in advance of need, many people achieve peace of mind. There are other advantages, too. Ask our staff to explain... no obligation.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Growth plate injuries: Kids Health says growth plates are the areas of growing tissue near the ends of the long bones in the legs and arms in children and adolescents. A growth plate produces new bone tissue. If the growth plate is injured, it cannot do its job properly. That may contribute to deformed bones, shorter limbs or arthritis. Growth plate injuries most often result from falling or twisting. While there’s no surefire way to prevent growth plate injuries, getting proper and immediate care after an injury can help prevent future problems. An orthopedic surgeon has the expertise to diagnose and treat these injuries.
We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy TREATING A TOOTHACHE AT HOME If a toothache lasts more than one to two days, it is important to schedule an appointment with the dentist. If left untreated, the abscess, tooth decay, cracked tooth, or lost filling that prompted the pain is likely to pose even greater problems (infection and worse pain). In the meantime, over-the-counter pain medications suchas acetaminophen and ibuprofen may be used to reduce the pain and discomfort while waiting to see the dentist. There are also over-thecounter dental gels available that contain local anesthetics that numb pain. This treatment, however, is not suitable for children under the age of 12. In addition, while clove oil is an age-old treatment for toothaches, there is insufficient evidence to recommend its use. The best way to zero in on a temporary home remedy for a toothache
is probably through trial and error. Considering the abundance of products on the market today, we’ll be happy to make recommendations so that you can make an informed decision. Since patient education is an important part of our practice at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we’re always ready to answer your questions about dental care. Please call us (585.343.4246) if you are concerned about any aspect of your dental health or if you would like to make an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Consuming clove oil can be dangerous for children and pregnant women.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 71. I’m overweight at 300 pounds and have had Type 2 diabetes for 15 years. I haven’t had any chest pain or heart problems, but a recent nuclear stress test led my doctor to suspect buildup in one of my arteries, and he wants to do a cardiac catheterization. I do not want to do this, partly because I feel that once you let doctors start messing with your body, you will only experience more problems (like a stent or something) and your life will never be the same. I don’t want to offend the cardiologist, but I really do not want to do this. Am I completely wrong? -- P.R. ANSWER: Making a decision after knowing all the pertinent information isn’t wrong, even if it isn’t the decision the doctor recommends. I’d like to be sure you have all the right information. A nuclear stress test uses a radioactive dye to look at blood flow to the heart. Although they are very accurate, like almost every test, they can be mistaken. This is why your cardiologist ordered the cardiac catheterization -- the best test we have to look for blockages in the arteries. The risk in a cardiac catheterization, also called an angiogram, is low. If there are no blockages, that information is helpful and might allow your cardiologist to have you stop some medications. If you do have blockages, you have a choice of medical treatment (such as a statin, beta blocker and aspirin), catheter treatment (such as angioplasty with or without a stent) and surgical treatment. Knowing more about the location and severity of any blockage can allow you to make a more informed decision about what treatment is better. Stents and surgery would be less commonly used in someone without symptoms, unless the blockage were very severe or in a critical artery. It’s not unreasonable, given your medical history, to assume that there is a blockage that might need medical treatment. In addition to the medications I mentioned, taking excellent care of your diabetes, losing some weight, making sure your diet is proper for someone with suspected heart disease, and participating in a monitored exercise program all can reduce your risk of a heart attack. In fact, these are important even if you do get a stent or surgery. I don’t think your cardiologist will be offended if you can give him your reasons for declining an angiogram, even though he and I are recommending it in order to provide the best information to decide whether further intervention is necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Since turmeric is said to be a powerful anti-inflammatory, would it be beneficial to drink a cup of tea made with it? Especially for something like ulcerative colitis? -- J.B. ANSWER: Curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric, releases two compounds (TNF-alpha and nitric oxide) that can reduce inflammation. In ulcerative colitis, one study showed that there were fewer exacerbations in people who took curcumin along with their usual medications for U.C., compared with those taking a placebo. It holds some promise but is by no means a cure. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Seniors’ senses of smell and taste change with age Aging comes with several sensory changes, many of which people expect. Loss of hearing or diminishing vision are widely associated with aging. But one’s senses of smell and taste may diminish with aging as well. The senses of taste and smell work in concert. The sense of smell is vital to personal health, not only because inhaling pleasant aromas can provide comfort and stress relief through aromatherapy and help trigger important memories, but also because smell enables a person to detect the dangers of smoke, gas, spoiled food, and more. The National Institute on Aging says that, as a person gets older, his or her sense of smell may fade, and that will also affect taste. The Mayo Clinic says some loss of taste and smell is natural and can begin as early as age 60. Adults have about 9,000 taste buds sensing sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami flavors, or those corresponding to the flavor of glutamates. Many tastes are linked to odors that begin at the nerve endings in the lining of the nose. Medline says the number of taste buds decreases as one ages, and that remaining taste buds may begin to shrink. Sensitivity to the five tastes also begins to decline. This can make it more difficult to distinguish between flavors. Similarly, especially after age 70, smell can diminish due to a loss of nerve endings and less mucus in the nose. With the combination of the reduction of these important sensory nerves in the nose and on the tongue, loss of smell and taste can greatly affect daily life. Changes in these senses can contribute to feelings of depression, diminish one’s enjoyment of food and cause harmful conditions, such as extreme weight loss from disinterest in food to problems associated with overusing salt or sugar.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.
Although aging is often to blame, loss of smell and taste also may be tied to early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Cancer treatments, medications, lack of saliva, colds, flu, and other factors may contribute to sensory loss. Changing medications or treatments may help. It’s important to bring up diminished flavors or smells with a doctor to rule out something more serious and to determine what might help restore pleasure from smells and flavors. An otolaryngologist, or a doctor who specializes in diseases of the ears, nose and throat, may be able to help fix the problem, though some people may be referred to a neurologist or another specialist. Continuing to use one’s sense of smell and taste by cooking, gardening, trying new flavors, and experimenting with different aromas may help slow down the decline these senses. Although age-related loss of taste and smell cannot be reversed, some such cases may be treatable.

PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH Now it is time to amend the soil. It’s not enough to enrich only the soil in the hole where the tree will be placed. Move out into a circular area beyond where the roots will start so that roots can expand and properly anchor the tree. The next method of success is to ensure that the tree has a large enough hole to contain the existing root ball and allow for roots to grow and expand. Better Homes and Gardens experts say to prepare a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball of the tree. Treat the root ball gently. If the roots are wrapped in burlap, remove the burlap or push it to the bottom of the hole. Backfill the hole with soil and check that the tree is straight. Stake the tree to help it stay upright and straight until the roots anchor it more effectively. A layer of mulch around the base of the tree can prevent weeds and reduce water loss. Water daily for several weeks until the roots have fanned out. It’s best to leave trees be for the first growing season, only removing broken or diseased limbs. Resist pruning and shaping until the tree has survived its first growing season.

REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS Farmers’ markets may sell organic produce at a cost comparable or even lower than other retailers. That’s because local farmers don’t have to transport their items as far as retailers whose foods were shipped from far away places.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your persistence pays off as the information you demanded starts to come through. The pace is slow at first, but it begins to speed up as the week draws to a close. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unwelcome bit of news jolts the Bovine, who would prefer that things proceed smoothly. But it’s at most a momentary setback. A Leo brings more welcome tidings. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You need to pay close attention to the details before making a commitment. Don’t accept anything that seems questionable, unless you get an answer that can be backed up. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Congratulations on getting that project up and running. But as exciting as it is, don’t let it carry you away. Make sure you set aside time to spend with family and friends. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Be sure you are part of the discussion involving your suggestions. Your presence ensures that you can defend your work, if necessary. It also helps gain your colleagues’ support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding needs to be dealt with, or it can grow and cause more problems later on. Be the bigger person and take the first step to clear the air. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Set some strict guidelines for yourself so your heavier-than-usual work schedule doesn’t overwhelm the time you need to spend relaxing with loved ones. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might feel a little uncomfortable being among people you hardly know. But remember that today’s strangers can become tomorrow’s valuable contacts. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Reward yourself for all that you’ve accomplished despite some annoying situations that got in your way. Enjoy a well-earned getaway with someone special. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Realizing that someone else is taking credit for what you did is bound to get anyone’s goat, but especially yours. Be patient. The truth soon comes out. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Forget about opposites attracting. What you need is to find someone who thinks like you and will support your ideas, even if others say they’re too radical. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Workplace problems can affect your financial plans. Be prudent and avoid running up bills or making commitments until things begin to ease up by the 27th. BORN THIS WEEK: Your intuition helps you communicate easily with people and understand their needs. (c) 2018 King Features Syndicate
