Supervisor’s Goodbye As we approach the end of 2021, I have had the honor of being part of Penfield government since 1975. I have been an employee, an appointed official on the Zoning Board of Appeals, an elected official on the town board, county legislature— and for the past twelve years I have served as town supervisor. I would like to thank all the residents, businesses, and community organizations for your support over the last 46 years. When I first came to Penfield there were fewer than 25,000 residents that called this wonderful community “home.” Now, the most recent census data shows us that the town has a population of nearly 40,000. What has made Penfield so popular and why has it been the fastest growing community in the county over the last five years? It’s because Penfield has a wonderful balance of growth, public safety, core values, governmental services, highly rated schools, successful businesses, several thousand acres of parks and open space, miles of trails, and a low town tax rate. Penfield also has many community and faith organizations that support residents and attract people from across the region, many different parts of the United States, and even the world. When Daniel Penfield settled this community in 1810, little did he know the lasting impact he would have for generations to come. I am honored to have

worked with many professionals over the years, both internally and externally, who share one significant common goal: each and every day they do their best to support the town and its residents. They look out for one another and work together to make everyone’s quality of life better. As I look towards retirement at the end of this year, I am thankful for the number of positive experiences I have had along the way: property acquisition for parks and trails, development of comprehensive plans and studies, the creation of an Energy & Environmental Advisory Committee, updates to recreational facilities, support of business districts, helping to manage Penfield as one of the most financially responsible towns in New York State, and providing factual communications to keep residents informed. My parents taught me “you should always leave things better than the way you found them.” I would like to think I was somewhat successful in doing that during my tenure. I now have the honor of turning Penfield’s leadership over to a colleague and friend, Marie Cinti, to take Penfield to the next level. Marie comes into this position with an impressive resume and a commitment to serving her community for its overall benefit and betterment. Marie, thank you in advance for your dedication to the residents of Penfield.

Penfield Supervisor It’s striking to me to think that just a year ago, the PBC published its first #LookLocalFirst directory to promote our local businesses in Penfield. The directory hit the stands right after I completed my term as President of the Penfield Business Chamber, and I spent the last few months of my term working on the directory’s final details. And here we are, one year later, and I’m preparing to begin my first term as Penfield Town Supervisor. I know you share my gratitude to Tony for his tireless dedication to the community. His passion and concern for Penfield are always at the top of his mind, and I thank him for his support and friendship over the past few months to make this transition a seamless one. I’m sure many of you are wondering what to expect with a change in leadership, both in the supervisor role and with the addition of Penfield Town Board Member, Candace Lee. While change is inevitable, our values remain the same. Town leadership is still dedicated to the Town’s five core beliefs: maintaining fiscal responsibility, maintaining a safe and healthy environment where all feel welcome, protecting the environment and taxpayers, standing for rightful and fair justice for all, and providing timely and factual communication.

In 2022, we are looking to expand the level of communication between government and residents with the increase of communication staff from parttime to full-time. The use of social media and variety of communication channels, not to mention the sheer pace of communications, has increased exponentially. The Town of Penfield must keep up with this demand. We will also be returning to a full-time Director of Developmental Services position to oversee Penfield’s economic development. The establishment of partnerships with various groups, both public and private, is essential to our overall growth and success. In fact, I think much of these next two years will be focused on balancing the recent growth of Penfield with maintaining, and even improving upon, our quality of life here. The question, “Where can we improve?” should be asked constantly. In all my experiences, I have worked towards the goal of building healthy communities. When we have effective and well-run town government, strong schools, a thriving business community, and vibrant service organizations, our community will flourish. I, and my fellow Town Board Members, look forward to serving you.

Message from the Penfield Business Chamber President Amy Valente

We need each other’s support now more than ever and the Penfield Business Chamber (PBC) is proud that we have provided that support to our local businesses throughout the years. While 2020 was a challenging year for small businesses, 2021 was the year of rebuilding for many of our members.

Similarly, the PBC adapted during the shutdowns of 2020, learning along the way. As such, I am excited to announce that we have restarted many of our programs!

Business of the Month The purpose of this program is to recognize a PBC member business that exemplifies contribution(s) to the Penfield community, PBC involvement, and/ or charitable works. This recognition is given to a different PBC member each month to place their contributions to the Penfield community in the “spotlight.” Recipients receive a certificate awarding them with the title of PBC’s Business of the Month. Additionally, recipients are publicly recognized in the PBC newsletter, on PBC social media platforms, and will be given an outside sign for the award month that designates the business as the Penfield Business Chamber’s Business of the Month. After a pause in this program, we re-vamped the application process and criteria for consideration over the summer. Nominations can be made through our

website and the PBC Board of Directors make a final selection each month from all submitted nominations. I am pleased to congratulate our members who have earned this prestigious designation in 2021:

Annual Business of the Year Awards Each year, the Penfield Business Chamber recognizes businesses in our community with three special awards: Business of the Year, the Daniel Penfield Award, and the Penfield Pride Award. The awards were presented virtually in January 2021 for the previous year. We thank all of our recipients for their gracious contributions to the Penfield community!

Recipients from 2020 are as follows: Business of the Year – Patty Flowerday School of Dance This award is given annually by the Penfield Business Chamber to honor a local business that has significantly contributed to the vitality and success of the Penfield business community. Patty Flowerday has been holding her dance studio in a 100-year-old farmhouse on Penfield Road for 10 years and employs six dance educators to assist her in

teaching dance and fitness to all ages. As a member of the PBC for seven years, her business has contributed to the Penfield business community through several different programs, ranging from donations to the Shepherd Home, to sponsoring local Boy Scout troops to supporting Penfield High School musicals. Her reach even goes beyond our community in raising money and pet supplies for Woof 2 Hoof and the Verona Shelter. As a business owner, Patty Flowerday volunteers for the PBC to assist in networking and business engagements in the community. The Patty Flowerday School of Dance hosted a PBC luncheon in 2020 and recently helped deliver signage and Shop Small Win BIG Contest materials to participating businesses. Please join the Penfield Business Chamber in congratulating the Patty Flowerday School of Dance as the 2020 recipient of the Penfield Business Chamber’s Business of the Year Award!

Daniel Penfield Award – Marie Cinti This award is given annually by the Penfield Business Chamber to honor a local businessperson who has positively impacted the Penfield business community through his or her community involvement, business practices and overall character. Marie is a staple of the Penfield community. For almost a dozen years, she has volunteered her time and talents to a variety of organizations, committees, and boards, including the Penfield Zoning Board of Appeals, Water for South Sudan, the Penfield Ecumenical Food Shelf, The Shepard Home, and the Penfield Rotary, where she was responsible for the execution of Literacy, Student Exchange, and Scholarship programs. Helping area businesses reach success through networking opportunities, educational enrichment, business mentoring, and marketing support is not only the PBC’s mission, but it is Marie’s as well. Under her leadership as president of the Chamber from 2019-2020, Marie received and secured the admiration and respect of countless business owners, not only in the Penfield community, but throughout other Chamber areas as well. Marie is always stepping in and stepping up to make things happen for the Penfield community in which she lives, and the businesses working within in it.

Penfield Pride Award – Ron & Joyce Baroody Each year the Penfield Business Chamber recognizes a local business that rehabilitates an existing building, creates a vibrant new look, and becomes a positive addition to Penfield’s proud community. Ron and Joyce have been instrumental in preserving Penfield’s past with their efforts to refurbish the Mann-Owen House, a historical landmark, preserving it for the Penfield community. Located just south of Penfield’s Four Corners, the house was constructed in 1828 as a residence for Penfield early settler, Calvin Owen. The Baroodys updated the home’s interior, as well as renovated portions of the exterior so that the building can remain a part of Penfield’s history well into the future.

Welcome Brigade Bag The Welcome Brigade Bag is a reuseable bag distributed by volunteer members to welcome new residents to the Penfield community. The bag is filled with promotional items from PBC member businesses, providing a great opportunity for our members to directly reach new Penfield residents. This is a free perk for our members; currently, we have 35 members participating. In 2021, we delivered 150 welcome bags to new residents of Penfield!

Programs In addition to the restart of many of our programs, the board had an idea to create a Penfield-centered event similar to our past Business Expos, but expanded in scope, in an outdoor venue and a bit more festive. Our first year was a great success! The Gathering on the Green event was held at the green space of Ashley Woods at Penfield Square, Episcopal Senior Living Communities and Home Leasing’s new mixed-use senior living community on Friday, August 6 from 4-7 p.m. The event included 40 vendors, three food trucks, demonstrations by ROC City Circus, and music provided by Bach to Rock Penfield students.

Membership At the beginning of 2020, the PBC had 120 members. We were able to survive the impact of the pandemic and as of September 2021, we currently have 139 members and are growing every month!

Gathering on the Green was well-attended by Penfield residents, who enjoyed the opportunity to meet and learn more about the businesses in and around their community!

Advocacy We created a new board position, the Director of Advocacy who attends various chamber meetings to keep up on small business concerns so that

We would like to thank our new members and longtime members for their support and continuing to see the value in the PBC. To assist new members in acclimating to all that the PBC offers, in 2021, we started virtual monthly new member orientation sessions, which have been well-received.

Where is the PBC going in the future? We have a vision to continue to offer existing programs and expand our offerings in the future. To do so, we are considering a physical location when possible both logistically and financially. Some initiatives for 2022 include: 1) Attracting more volunteers to assist us in achieving our objectives 2) Formalizing the Ambassador program to provide new members with a mentor when they join 3) Offering new training programs and workshops in a variety of topics that we believe our members would benefit from, such as NYS Sexual Harassment Prevention Training, NYS Hero Act Training, and Employee Handbook Training 4) Concentrating on marketing by updating our website to a new, more cost-effective software that provides more features and functionality than we currently have 5)

Partnering with the Town of Penfield to develop a business incubator to help spur new business development in Penfield

6) Developing new opportunities for businesses to sponsor and partner with the PBC 7) Planning our second large-scale summer event that will provide opportunities to meet and greet PBC member and community businesses I would like to thank our PBC Board of Directors for serving on the board in 2021! A special thank you to our PBC Administrative Director, Kathi Gunio, who keeps us all organized and on track! We couldn’t operate our organization without all of you.

Getting to Know

Penfield, New York The Town of Penfield features approximately 37 square miles of pleasant neighborhoods, high quality schools, numerous local businesses, and several refreshing parks and trails. Its Thousand Acre Swamp, one of Monroe County’s largest wetland systems, offers habitats as diverse as marshy lowlands and forested uplands as well as an extensive boardwalk and trail system, and a wide range of plant and animal life. Minutes from St. John Fisher College and Nazareth College, as well as being neighbor to several Rochester colleges, Penfield boasts a welleducated population. Over 95% have achieved a high school diploma, and more than half have a college education up to a doctorate. Penfield’s elementary and secondary schools are also exceptional, with its high school ranking seventh in the Rochester Metro Area. 14

Philbrick Park: Located off Rt. 441, just west of the intersection of Five Mile Line Rd. and Rt. 441: This tucked away, 19 acre park features two trails, one open pavilion, grills, seasonal public restrooms, green areas, handicapped fishing access, kiosk and hiking trail along Irondequoit Creek. Be on the lookout for its access road as it is fairly inconspicuous, and prepare to be amazed by just how much space this park really has.
