Penny Saver Pet of the Week Dobby is a rescue from the Virgin Islands. He got the name Dobby from the Harry Potter house elf because when he was a puppy he was all ears. His breed is a Coconut Retriever and his vet couldn’t wait to meet him because they’d never had a Coconut Retriever before. His nickname is giraffe because his neck is so long. He’s been the best addition to our family and makes us laugh daily.

SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE (NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up. What You Can Do 1. Spend time with your children. 2. Be a positive role model. 3. Send a text to stay connected when far away. 4. Read to your children. 5. Remember #DadJokesRule! There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2 What Dads are Already Doing Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved: • 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3 • 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4 • 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5 • Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6
One Big Poinsettia
• Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7 Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8 To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign.
One of our First Snowfalls
When my Kids were Little...
“All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated. The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. It only takes a moment to make a moment. Learn More: For helpful tips, tools, information, jokes and resources, visit www.fatherhood.gov. 1 - Primus, L. (2017). Delivering The Freedom Of Choice
--DEAR DR. ROACH: My 18-year-old grandson has just been informed that he has left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy. He has been VERY active his whole life, playing football, baseball, basketball and soccer all through high school. He had no symptoms. This was found when getting a physical for college, where he was supposed to play football, and he has been told that is now out of the question. The doctors are saying it’s a very rare condition, and they want to put in a defibrillator ASAP. -- Anon. ANSWER: Left ventricular noncompaction is a cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscle) that is rarely diagnosed, but it probably has been under-recognized. It can run in families, so it’s recommended to examine relatives for the condition. It is diagnosed by echocardiogram, and some cases can be identified through genetic analysis. LVNC can lead to heart failure, arrhythmias and stroke. There is no specific treatment for LVNC, so people with the condition are treated for the manifestations of their disease. For people with heart failure, this means they are treated with the appropriate medications, which hopefully will prevent or at least slow down any damage to the heart. Management also can include an automated internal cardiac defibrillator (AICD) if the heart muscle is seriously weakened. People with LVNC and a history of serious arrhythmias should get an AICD as well. Since arrhythmias are very common in LVNC, AICDs may be used more frequently than with other causes of heart failure. Also, it is likely that your grandson’s doctor has more expertise than I in managing this condition, and certainly has more knowledge about his heart, so I would take the recommendation for AICD very seriously. It is strongly recommended he avoid competitive endurance sports and weightlifting. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m 40 and was diagnosed with sarcoidosis recently. It was found in my left eye when my eye doctor noticed inflammation. I also was having vertigo and face pain. It wasn’t until I had a PET scan and they biopsied a lymph node that I got the diagnosis. I am on steroids and recently started taking methotrexate. I’m having horrible side effects (mostly mouth sores and losing my hair), and my original symptoms are coming back. I feel like my doctors don’t know how to treat this disease. I have been told that it is rare in my area. Where can I learn more about this disease and see if there are better and more current treatments? -- J.O. ANSWER: Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disease with an unknown cause. It most often affects younger people and women of African descent. The most commonly affected organs are the eyes and lungs, and lymph nodes are commonly enlarged. The severity can range from quite mild to life-threatening. The diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy. Initial treatment usually consists of steroids, and methotrexate is often used. However, mouth sores and hair loss are both common complications. To find an expert with special expertise in treating sarcoidosis, I would start with your closest teaching hospital. Even though you haven’t told me about any lung disease, pulmonologists tend to have expertise in treatment of sarcoid, even when it affects organs other than the lungs. Most large hospitals have websites where you can search for doctors with expertise in a certain disease. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. TRIVIA TEST
FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME (NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time. 1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. 2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE.

6 ways to make bathrooms a safer place Homes should be safe havens. But each year injuries in and around the home contribute to millions of medical visits and many fatalities each year. Although anywhere in a home can be the scene of an accident, bathrooms tend to be the most dangerous room in the house. Slippery tile, the presence of water, stockpiled medications, and many sharp and hard edges in a small space pose several different hazards in the bathroom, particularly for young children and people age 65 and up. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says falls, which can result in serious injuries like hip fractures and head trauma, are the cause of 80 percent of all bathroom accidents. Many bathroom accidents are preventable with some easy modifications. 1. Reduce slippery surfaces. Wet tile is a recipe for slick conditions. Bath rugs with rubber backing can provide traction in the bathroom, as can nonslip mats placed on the floor of the bathtub or shower enclosure. Water-resistant flooring made from recycled rubber is another option. It is softer, less slippery and more forgiving than traditional tile flooring. 2. Install lever-style fixtures. Round knobs in the bathroom can be difficult to grasp, especially for the elderly or those with arthritis. Lever-style fixtures are easier to maneuver and can help alleviate scalding from not being able to adequately adjust the water temperature. 3. Utilize transfer benches and shower seats. A transfer bench can help reduce injuries that occur when trying to climb over a tub wall. Benches are placed outside of the tub and a person sits and then swings his legs over the ledge. Transfer benches also can be

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.
used in conjunction with shower seats. This is a chair or bench that allows people to sit while they shower. 4. Discard old medications. Clean out the medicine cabinet of old or expired medications, including both prescription and over-the-counter drugs. This reduces the likelihood of medication confusion, and does not put potentially harmful pills and syrups into the hands of children. 5. Install grab bars. Properly installed grab bars around the shower and toilet area can provide leverage and stability. AARP says many injuries to seniors occur when they are attempting to sit or get up from the toilet. Grab bars or an elevated toilet seat can help. 6. Install motion-detecting lights. These lights turn on automatically upon detecting movement, making them beneficial for people who routinely visit the bathroom in the middle of the night. Adequate illumination also can help reduce fall risk. Bathroom safety should be made a priority. Various modifications can make bathrooms safer for people of all ages.

Winter Fun: Sledding Tips & Favorite Spots
Crossword Puzzle
By Amanda Dudek Sledding can be great fun and excellent winter exercise with a bit of preparation. Contributing factors such as the weather, sledding gear and winter wear should all be considered when preparing for your family’s winter outing. Even the most experienced sledding enthusiasts may learn something new from our sledding tips or discover a new favorite sledding hill from those below, recommended by our readers! Check the weather forecast. Even though the temperature outside may not be especially low, other weather factors, such as wind chill, are important to take into consideration when you are planning to spend several minutes out of doors. Checking an hourly forecast, as well, can allow you to see potential storm fronts and temperature drops and prepare accordingly. Don’t forget to use SPF on any exposed skin! Dress in warm, waterproof layers. When sledding, more complete coverage is essential, especially for children. Snow pants or a full-body snowsuit of waterproof/water-resistant material should be worn. While warm gloves or mittens and coats come in absorbent materials, these are not ideal unless they are water-resistant. Boots must also be waterproof/waterresistant. Snow pant cuffs ideally secure around the outside of the boots, preventing snow from landing inside and soaking the socks and feet. Hats should completely cover ears. Underneath this winter gear, wear layers of natural, moisture-wicking fibers, such as cotton, to keep “pockets” of warm air next to the body. Choose your sled. There is one question that stands out as important when choosing a sled, especially for a child. Does the sled have a steering mechanism? Some sleds have simple steering along the front. Many sleds do not. Younger riders and riders on busy hills may want to avoid sleds which they cannot quickly steer away from others or away from obstacles. Several types of sleds are directed by the way in which the rider leans; however, this may not be ideal for very young riders or for situations in which a rider may need to turn quickly. Know your limits. Pay attention to your body’s well-being as well as to the well-being of those with you. Conditions such as frostbite and hypothermia can occur with exposure to cold weather. According to the American Red Cross, symptoms for frostbite include a lack of feeling in the affected area, skin that appears waxy, is cold to the touch, or is discolored (flushed, white or gray, yellow or blue). Hypothermia symptoms include such things as shivering which may stop as one’s body temperature continues to drop, numbness, a glassy stare, apathy, weakness, impaired judgment and loss of consciousness. Anyone experiencing any of these symptoms should be moved to a warm environment, and if frostbite and/or hypothermia is suspected, call 9-1-1 and seek medical attention immediately.

PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic.

“On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.” He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year. Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard.

(NAPSI)—When the temperature’s rising, your energy costs don’t have to. These tips from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency can help: 1. Keep the Heat Out and the Cool In—Sealing and insulating your home can save you up to $200 a year in utility bills. Find and seal air leaks with spray foam, caulk and weather stripping. Seal and insulate the cooling system ducts in your attic. Considering new windows? ENERGY STAR certified windows have coatings that let in light but keep out heat. Replacing old windows with these lowers household energy bills 12 percent on average. Also, keep shades down and drapes closed. 2. Maintain Your Cooling System—Have a contractor check and clean evaporator and condenser air-conditioning coils, check your central air conditioner’s refrigerant level and adjust if necessary, and clean and adjust blower components. Inspect, clean or change your system’s air filter every three months. 3. Need a Room AC?—If you’re getting a room air conditioner, be aware that models with the ENERGY STAR label have been independently certified to deliver energy savings, comfort, and improved sealing and insulation. On average, they cost as little as $70 per year to run. A room air conditioner with connected functionality can: • Turn off the unit remotely using your phone or computer; • Schedule changes to temperature settings based on your needs; • Get feedback on the energy use of the product. Choose the right size AC. An oversized unit will only remove some of the humidity, leaving the room with a damp, clammy feeling. When installing an AC, follow the instructions and use the insulation materials included. 4. Get Set for Savings—Install a new ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat for energy savings with environmental benefits, reliable performance, and convenience, insight and control. A Wi-Fi-enabled thermostat can automatically adjust heating and cooling temperature settings for optimal performance. If you have a manual or programmable thermostat, set the temperature up to save energy when you’re asleep or away. 5. Choose and Use Products to Keep Your Cool—In hot weather, use an ENERGY STAR certified ceiling fan in the counterclockwise direction. This creates a wind-chill effect, making you “feel” cooler. Replace incandescent lightbulbs with ENERGY STAR certified LED bulbs. These produce about 70 to 90 percent less heat, so they’re safer and can cut energy costs. For more information and tips, visit www.energystar.gov/cooling.

Portable vs. Standby Generators Prepare your hom e for a pow er outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction betw een these options w ill help any family determine w hich is the better choice for their home. • A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling. • A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past. W ith an emergency kit on hand and the right backup pow er source available, the frustration of w eathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Romantic aspects are high at this time for single Lambs looking for love. Warm and fuzzy feelings also are at enhanced levels for Rams and Ewes in paired relationships. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week favors what Taureans dote on -namely, love and money. Look for more meaningful relationships for both singles and pairs, as well as an improved financial outlook. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) All lingering shreds of that recent bout with boredom are dissipated as you eagerly accept a challenging offer. Your positive mood persuades others to join you in this venture. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You might need validation for a possible solution to a situation involving someone close to you. Consider asking a trusted friend or relative to help you with this problem. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Investigate carefully before agreeing to assist a friend or colleague with a personal problem. There might be hidden factors that could emerge later that will create problems for you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your decision to work with an associate rather than go it alone, as you first proposed, brings an unexpected bonus. Be careful not to be judgmental. Allow for free and open discussion. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A loved one’s health problem could, once again, make demands on your time and attention. But this time, make some demands of your own, and insist that others pitch in and help. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time for the traditionally staid Scorpion to plan adjustments in your day-to-day schedules. Be more flexible and allow for more impromptu, off-the-cuff actions. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Avoid creating unnecessary fuss over a situation you don’t approve of. If it’s going to work, it will do so despite your objections. If it fails, it will do so without a push from you. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Working with a trusted colleague could open your mind to exploring some considerations you previously dismissed out of hand. The weekend brings news from a loved one. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Resolving a recent problem leaves you in a good position to strengthen your influence on how things get done. But continue to encourage ideas and suggestions from others. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new friend suggests an interesting opportunity. But check it out before you snap at it. It might be a good deal for some people, but it might not work in helping you reach your goals. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of helping people solve their problems, making you a most-respected counselor and trusted friend. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

You clearly know your area store is understaffed at check out, so, if you are incapable of being patient or don't have the time to wait your turn, save yourself the obvious hardship and shop at a less busy time. Every driver could use a refresher course in the rules of the road now and then, and your little sarcastic list was amusing until I read number eight. I disagree. Using your middle finger is never appropriate. It is cruel and hurtful. One young man found out too late how dangerous it was to flip someone
off in traffic. The insulted driver jumped out at the next red light and shot a bullet through the young man's head. You certainly sound proud of your ability to judge the rest of the driving world from your imaginary throne, but you fail to recognize that all human beings are battling some kind of crisis which may alter their driving skills from time to time. community that cares so much, and I am overjoyed to be back at work with all the amazing students, faculty and staff. Thank you. There is a Secret Santa in Batavia, NY! I was having a rough time shopping because of a needed knee replacement and must use a cane. I hobbled into Dollar Tree, did my shopping, and loaded the car. I got in and drove about a mile and noticed an envelope stuck under my windshield wiper! I pulled over and got it off the windshield. I was thinking, "what the heck?" On the envelope was written Season's Greetings. Inside was a $5 bill! At that very moment the song came on, "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," then the sun came out, and then I cried tears of happiness. Little
did this Secret Santa know we had to bury my mother Christmas week and she is truly missed on Christmas. You really made my day! I will spread the joy further!

This also includes being receptive to criticism without lashing out. Listening can sometimes be more important than speaking.
EFFICIENCY AT WORK Schedules can help professionals in much the same way that grocery lists help consumers at the grocery store. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.
