When one of my plants dies, I die a little inside, too. ~Linda Solegato
STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.
8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

Prevent summer sun and heat damage to your car Clean out your “stuff.” The heat can cause items inside vehicles to melt or explode. Depending on the product, a lot of staining or damage can occur if items melt or explode inside a car. Wax-based products can be particularly harmful. Be wary of leaving lipstick, crayons, candles, lip balms, sunscreen, and lotions inside vehicles on hot days. In addition, remove canned carbonated beverages and other canned items to reduce likelihood of spills.

Regain hope and strength while caregiving Caregivers are unpaid individuals, typically a spouse, child, neighbor, or friend, who assist with activities of daily living and medical tasks. These informal caregivers often fill in gaps between medical professionals or paid aides to meet the needs of incapacitated individuals. The National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP indicate that approximately 43.5 million caregivers have provided unpaid care to an adult or child in the last 12 months. Roughly 15.7 million adult family caregivers in the United States care for someone who has Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, states the Alzheimer’s Association. Though both men and women serve as caregivers, females are the largest segment of unpaid caregivers, handling some of the most difficult tasks, such as bathing and dressing. Many caregivers selflessly give back by providing assistance to a friend or family member, and view this type of service as a form of charitable giving. Others see it as simply being a good friend or family member. Although it can be rewarding to care for another person, caregiving also can be a stressful job that takes both a physical and emotional toll on caregivers. Caregiver stress is a very real side effect. It is important for caregivers to recognize that offering medical care • Social withdrawal from friends or activities that used to make you and support can leave them vulnerable to a wide range of feel good consequences. --DEAR DR. ROACH: Can “heading” the ball in soccer cause a concussion? I have grandchildren who play soccer, and I am concerned. -- G.W.H. ANSWER: The evidence is mounting that repeated trauma to the brain can contribute to a type of brain injury called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is seen frequently in boxers and football players. However, there is more and more evidence that soccer players also may get this injury, and it correlates to the number of headers players do. Since younger brains may be more susceptible to injuries, and kids have relatively larger heads and weaker necks than adults, the Sports Legacy Institute recommends against heading the ball until the age of 14. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old woman with a lot of hot flashes. I heard that maca root is good for treating these. I have been taking it for two years, and feel like it has really helped me. Is this safe? -- J.F. ANSWER: Maca root, a dietary staple in Peru, has been touted as a treatment for both sexual performance and menopausal symptoms. One review found limited evidence for benefit in sexual function, but I could not find any study looking at its effectiveness in menopausal symptoms. Fortunately, it has few, if any, adverse effects and might be worth a try for those who haven’t had benefit from or can’t take other treatments. I have to remind you again that you may not be getting what you think you are buying, as oversight on supplements is limited. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with peripheral artery disease in 1991. What kind of test is recommended for checking up on this? Can it be cured? -- J.C. ANSWER: “Peripheral artery disease” is the general term used for cholesterol plaques in the arteries, which can block blood flow. The most common symptom is pain with walking, usually after a specific exercise duration, which is relieved with rest. However, since these blockages can occur in any artery, PAD can cause many different symptoms, such as pain after eating (when the blockages are in the arteries to the gut). The disease most commonly is diagnosed by noninvasive studies, like a Doppler ultrasound of the arteries or using one blood pressure cuff on the thigh and another on the arm. Sometimes, an angiogram is necessary. Since it’s really the same disease as coronary artery disease and cerebrovascular disease, people with PAD are at much higher risk for heart attack and stroke. Although we cannot, in general, cure PAD, we have many different kinds of treatments to reduce risk of catastrophic events and to improve symptoms. Treatment starts with modifying existing risk factors, especially smoking, which is the most powerful modifiable risk. A proper diet that cuts down on excess unhealthy fats and simple sugars is important. A monitored exercise program, gradually increasing in duration and intensity, can have a dramatic effect on function. Most people will benefit from statin drugs and anti-platelet drugs, such as aspirin. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A little “wool-gathering” for the usually productive Lamb is all right if it helps you unwind. But be careful; too much daydreaming can put you behind schedule in your work. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A work problem is close to being resolved. Now you can go ahead and celebrate the week, accepting invitations from friends who enjoy your company. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting your new plan accepted won’t be a major hassle if you have the facts to back it up. Your supporters are also prepared to help you make your case. Good luck. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Dealing with a pesky job problem might be time-consuming but necessary. The sooner you get this situation settled, the sooner you can move on to other matters. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Career advancement is favored thanks to your impressive work record. On the personal side, you should soon hear some good news about an ailing family member. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) There might be mixed signals from a certain someone who doesn’t seem all that certain about their intentions. Best to sort it all out before it becomes more confusing. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Get all the facts about that investment “opportunity” before you put even one dollar into it. There could be hidden problems that could prove to be costly. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Compromising on a matter you feel strongly about not only ends the impasse, but can be a win-win deal for all. Remember: Scorpios do well with change. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) With all the demands you currently have to deal with, accepting the help of family and friends could be the wisest course to take at this time. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Recent upsetting incidents might have left you with a big gap in your self-assurance. Refill it by spending time with those who know how worthy you really are. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) A dispute about money needs to be resolved quickly, before it festers into something more serious. Consider asking an impartial colleague to mediate the matter. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A soft approach could be more effective than making a loud demand for the information you need. You might even find yourself with more data than you expected. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re sought out for the wonderful advice you’re able to offer to others. And sometimes you even take it yourself. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

New York State Festival of Balloons to Bring Big Family Fun␣ Thirty-seven years ago, a festival was formed to celebrate a flurry of balloons rising from the grassy fields of the Dansville airstrip and soaring over the hills of the Genesee Valley. Today, that flurry has grown to fill the sky as many majestic, silken globes float gracefully above the countryside, painting every vista with their resplendent colors. Quite in contrast to their relaxed appearance, hot air balloons present a challenge and require specific circumstances and skills for successful flight. Each balloonist is a licensed pilot, and the entire aviation event is monitored and regulated by the FAA. Additionally, the balloonmeister, who determines when and whether the balloons may launch, is an FAA official. In fact, condition requirements are such that a balloon festival cannot be hosted just anywhere. Certain air currents must be present which can carry the balloons up for a successful launch. The valley in Dansville is one such place, which is why it is also home to the Dansville Glider Club. ␣ The favorable flight conditions of Dansville’s valley have long been recognized, even before the establishment of a balloon festival or airport. In approximately 1874, three Allen brothers started flying hot air balloons right here in Dansville. Perhaps fatefully, their first launch was rumored to be in August, just as our NYS Festival of Balloons takes place in August today. So, the NYS Festival of Balloons is not only a celebration of flight, but it is also a celebration of over 140 years of Dansville history. The NYS Festival of Balloons includes several days of activities, beginning with the Glow on Thursday evening and continuing until the final launch at 6am on Monday morning. This last launch is one of six total launches that will take place over the course of the event. Tethered balloon rides will also be available so that everyone can experience the thrill of riding in a hot air balloon. On Saturday, a paraglider will take to the skies, gliding in a harness attached to a three-footwide strip of sail fabric. He will fly over the festival area and land back on airport grounds to the amazement of observing spectators. Such spectators will fill the valley from all over New
York State as well as from other states and even Canada, totaling an average, in years past, of 35,000 guests. As you might suppose, there is a great deal of community involvement, volunteerism and participation involved in hosting an event for so many guests to enjoy. That enjoyment, says Dansville NYS Festival of Balloons Board President, Dorothy Hotchkiss, is what this is really all about. “For us as a group of volunteers to be able to stand there and watch the faces of families, children, seniors and see the excitement and joy appear as they watch the balloons launch, that’s the reward.” While the hot air balloons are unquestionably the focus of the festival, they are by no means all the festival has to offer. The Festival of Balloons is flush with entertainment, and every bit of it is familyfriendly.␣␣A food court will dish up several different types of festival foods, both traditional favorites and new culinary delights. A wide variety of musical entertainment will be ongoing throughout the festival, and guests are welcome to dance and have a good time. Entrance fees are intentionally kept low at $5 per person with children 12 and under free and no parking fees. Children’s rides and amusements as well as Nature Nick’s Animal Adventures will be thrilling youngsters on both Saturday and Sunday. Several arts and crafts vendors will be displaying unique goods throughout the festival, as well. There will truly be something for everyone, from small children to senior citizens. Bring the whole family and enjoy the spectacular sights as well as all the family fun. For more information, visit our website at␣https:// www.gvpennysaver.com/special_sections/ special_promotion/. Don’t miss this gorgeous Labor Day weekend event!

A HUGE THANK YOU to the 2 ladies who drove red cars who stopped and helped me rescue my dog on Saturday, August 11th on Route 20. Grateful Pet Owner I would like to thank towns like Mendon and Henrietta for putting flags along main thoroughfares, and any other towns that do this. It's a beautiful sight and I'm glad that pride is being shown. Thank you.
We were recently sent an article of someone venting about our bus in a local parade and how scary it is! WE WERE PERSONALLY INVITED BY THE PEOPLE RUNNING THE PARADE! We have been a not-for-profit organization for many years now. We donate to local charities and other organizations that help sick
Kudos to the staff at Morgan Estates for organizing a wonderful “Summer Bash” for the residents and their families. Good food, Good music and lots of fun. We appreciate all that you do every day for our family members. Last week a small group of friends had breakfast at Peppermints. We were chatty & talked about everything. There was a patron who was sitting in a booth near us. He was alone then we noticed that he left. We were getting ready to pay our bills when the waitress told us
individuals or those in need. And it's funny as you say that it traumatized kids as two of [the] kids in the parade with us were 2 and 4 years old and look forward to doing it! We are not a "Halloween Party", we are an actual business that has brought something fun to the area. We gave out over 50 free passes for our events and handed out candy and goodies and had one of the kids hand stuff out to show other kids we aren't there to scare them! We even have [a] kids' day!
Short and to the point! Before you purchase your next USED RV Camper - research the COMPANY thoroughly before choosing that next great USED RV. It might be a super deal, great price, and awesome
they had been paid by the man who sat at the booth. We wanted to thank him but no one knew his name. You made our day! We all smiled & in our hearts said thank you. There are still people out there who have hearts of gold. Know that we are paying it forward. Thank you for the random act of kindness. God bless you. Thank you so much to my neighbors in Mount Morris for mowing my lawn this summer. It is challenging for me to keep up with the mowing since I have two small children and a push mower.
salesman, BUT it is the after sales service that you want to research. Read reviews and talk to people, as you may find out like I did that the service department doesn't return phone calls, and doesn't service your needs (after you've bought that extended service contract). BEWARE and do your research on the dealer (not the deal)!
Could ANYBODY please tell me why on the few gorgeous days we have around here that we can open our windows and breathe FRESH air, do farmers need to spread that eye burning manure? Can't they wait until its 90 and we have our a/c's on? Really, my eyes are on fire.
It is so nice to have neighbors who still look out for each other. God bless you!
To the middle-aged man on our end of the street in [local town] - either you have a medical problem, are an exhibitionist, or just plain lazy but your need to urinate outdoors on the side of your house is disgusting and really needs to end. Whether you care or not, your behavior is offensive to your neighbors who may be out strolling with their children, walking their dogs, or just trying to sit outside on their porch. Last I knew there are laws regarding public lewdness. Maybe your neighbors should be grateful you don't "assume the position" against one of your trees or mailbox. Go inside and use the restroom. ENOUGH ALREADY!

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. For more information on NaturVet products, please visit www.NaturVet.com or call (888) 628-8783.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL
$150 SIGN ON BONUS *
Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.
