PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.
RESOLVE TO WEAR CLOTHES THAT FIT IN THE YEAR AHEAD Many people struggle to find the right size clothing, shoes and undergarments. It’s a situation that affects both men and women. Consider these facts: • Research by menswear retailer Jacamo found 22 percent of British men are wearing the wrong size clothes or shoes. • A recent international study done by Swiss lingerie company Triumph found that, of the 10,000 women polled, 64 percent are wearing the incorrect bra size. • The average shoe size is up about two sizes since the 1970s. Yet, at least one-third of men and half of women are buying the wrong size, according to Long Tall Sally, a U.K.-based apparel and footwear retailer that gets almost half its sales from North America. Many people today purchase their clothing off the rack and never step inside a tailor’s shop unless it is to have formal clothing adjusted for special occasions. People generally give little thought to taking out the measuring tape and getting a refresher on their measurements - despite changes in their body weights. Plus, many do not recheck their shoe sizes, likely because shoe stores are mostly self-service and the number of Brannock devices, or the standard foot measuring tool for the worlds footwear industry, are dwindling in retail centers.

Though Law Enforcement Appreciation Day has passed, it is not too late to thank the men and women who put a uniform on every day to protect and serve. Saturday afternoon, I was sitting in my living room in Webster. As I looked out the window, I saw a man riding his bike. On People need to seriously start picking up the poop from their dogs! I am so tired of, and disgusted by, dog poop all over the place, including my front lawn. I have a large dog that I walk every day, and I 100% pick up after him. You know who you are; stop it! After reading about a disruptive child in a checkout line especially when the child tried to steal personal property and was messing with the cash register, I have to wonder why this cashier did not immediately call for the manager to come to the front of the store and handle this situation. That is one of the responsibilities of a store or front-end manager. Does anyone in the [local town] know what a stop sign is or how to stop? I realize that you think GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

On Sunday, January 26, Riga Recreation held its annual “WinterFest” in partnership with the Churchville Lions Club, the Churchville-Chili School District and the Monroe County Parks Department at the Churchville Elementary School. The Lions, once again, sold out their “World Famous” Chicken BBQ, and there were carnival games, airbrush tattoos, caricature drawings, and a bounce house in the gymnasium. Weeks before Christmas, I had put up my Christmas lights on my house on a typical village street. At dark, I went outside and stood on the sidewalk, inspecting the joy when I heard footfalls in the snow on the street and saw that a woman was jogging toward me. Simple courtesy called for some kind of acknowledgment, and I smiled and said hello, not thinking that a man standing on a sidewalk at dusk could appear sketchy. Immediately, she got an unpleasant look, muttered something unpleasant and sprinted away down the street. I felt bad instantly for making her uncomfortable. I understand, and her reaction wasn’t wrong, but it’s a shame that a simple smile and hello can cause fear or discomfort. The world got a little colder for me that day.

Prepare a medium-hot fire in your grill.

In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, yogurt, turmeric, coriander, cumin, and salt until well-blended. Form into four 3/4-inch-thick patties.

For the cumin yogurt sauce, combine the cumin and yogurt together in a bowl until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Toss the shredded lettuce and cilantro in a bowl and set aside.

Lightly brush the sliced onions, tomatoes and cut side of the hamburger buns with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill the patties, onions and tomatoes directly over the fire. Grill the tomatoes for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Turn the burgers once after 7 to 8 minutes, then grill for another 7 to 8 minutes, or until the burgers are no longer pink inside and an instant-read thermometer registers 160 F in the center of each patty.

Grill the onions for about 8 to 9 minutes, turning once halfway through the cooking time, or until softened and slightly charred. During the last minutes of grilling, toast the buns, cut side down, directly over the fire. To serve, place a patty on each bun. Top with a slice of grilled onion, tomato and 1/4 cup of lettuce mixture and a dollop of yogurt sauce. Serve the extra grilled onion and tomato slices on the side.

Can Chocolate Worsen Irregular Heartbeat? ---
Resolving To Hear Better?
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 82 years old and still very active. I have had an irregular heartbeat for four years, and sometimes I feel lightheaded, dizzy or tired. I worry about it getting worse. Would you please give a detailed explanation about irregular heartbeat, including how or why it happens? What should I do to prevent it from getting worse? Is it life threatening? Will it become atrial fibrillation? Also, I am a chocolate lover and eat dark chocolate every day. But I was told that cocoa will make my irregular heartbeat worse and I should stop eating dark chocolate. Is that true? -- Q.Y. ANSWER: Everyone has irregular heartbeats from time-to-time. Early beats can come from electrically active areas anywhere in the heart, and an electrocardiogram can tell whether they are from the atria (the top chambers) or the ventricles (the bottom chambers) of the heart. An average person may have 500 or so of these a day -- some people have many more. Most are seldom aware of them. Having patients with this concern over and over during my career, I can reassure you that most cases turn out to be nothing to worry about. However, the fact that you are having symptoms, especially the lightheadedness and fatigue, is a warning sign, and I recommend you get an evaluation. Start with your regular medical provider, after which you may be referred to a cardiologist. The EKG in his or her office is a first step, but you may need a longer evaluation, such as wearing a 24-hour EKG (a Holter monitor) or newer technologies that allow longer readings. Atrial fibrillation is a concern, because most people will need treatment to reduce stroke risk or to return the rhythm to normal. Nevertheless, there are many other kinds of irregular heart rhythms, and you need a diagnosis first. If no cause is found, there are medications to reduce the irregularity, but they are seldom used. My experience is that when a person knows they are not dangerous, they can be lived with more easily. Chocolate does contain theobromide, a substance that can make the heart a little more irritable, but it takes a lot of chocolate to have a significant effect. It’s related to caffeine in coffee. Interestingly, a recent study found that chocolate lovers are less likely to develop atrial fibrillation, so the situation is more complex than just one chemical. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I read that drinking warm lemon water with honey has many health benefits, partially because lemons are an alkaline food. Is this correct? -- B.W. ANSWER: I think I saw the same article. Lemon water may have some health benefits, but it is not an alkaline food, and drinking it has almost no impact on the acidity of your blood or urine, because the body’s buffer systems (the chemical processes used to keep the pH carefully regulated) are so effective. Lemons have a pH of about 2, so they are highly acidic. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) makes the urine more acidic. There is no consistent evidence that the foods we eat have a health benefit due solely to their effect on body pH. Many of the foods recommended for their supposed alkaline effects are indeed healthy, but for other, complex reasons apart from pH. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. FIVE TIPS FOR PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION SUCCESS (NAPSI)—For people who are on one or more daily prescription medicines, forgetting to take a pill can happen from time to time. Planning ahead for such schedule-disrupting events as vacations and special events can help you stay on track and minimize any health risks that might result from not “taking as directed.” Doctor’s Advice “It’s really important to take your medication exactly as prescribed, even if you don’t feel different after missing a day or two,” explained Dr. Victoria Losinski, director of pharmacy services at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. “This is especially true for people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, because their risk of ending up in the hospital is 2.5 times greater when not following a doctor’s treatment plan.” The mantra “you have to take the medicine for it to work” goes beyond diabetes control. People who don’t take their prescribed high blood pressure medication on a regular basis have a 42 percent higher chance of developing chronic heart failure. And people on high cholesterol medications are twice as likely to develop heart disease if their cholesterol is not under control. Using a pillbox is a simple low-tech way to make sure you take exactly what you need when you need it. There are also pharmacies, including PillPack, that sort your prescriptions, vitamins and other overthe-counter medicines into dated packets to make taking your meds even easier. You can also ask your pharmacy if it offers a similar program. 4. Set an alarm. Use your smartphone to schedule reminders. If you’re looking for an app, try Rxremind, which can be downloaded for iPhone or for Android. 5. Refill on time. Accessing your pharmacy’s auto-refill program, requesting a 90-day supply and using a mail-order prescription service are all good ways to help make sure you don’t run out and miss your medication. Trees Not Tombstones: New Options For End-of-Life (NAPS)—The vast majority of Americans have not completed their end-of-life planning. In fact, over half of those age 45-plus have done no end-of-life planning at all, according to a recent survey conducted by Better Place Forests, the country’s first sustainable alternative to cemeteries for families that choose cremation. Dansville Peace Poster Contest Winner Moves on to State By Amanda Dudek
L
ast fall, Dansville youth between eleven and thirteen years old turned in an incredible 84 entries to the Lions Club’s annual Peace Poster Contest which begins with local entries in October, progressing through regional and state levels before culminating at the national level later the following year. Two students won first and second place respectively, and the first-place winner, Addison Musto, went on to win first at Regional in Batavia and will go on to State this spring. Lions Club member Ann Mahus has been the liaison between the school and the Lions Club for the ten years it has participated. “The contest is part of the Lions International Association and has been held for over three decades,” she explained. “In October, we received 84 entries, and to get 84 entries from students between the ages eleven and thirteen just in the Dansville area is outstanding.”
Every year, the contest has a different theme. Sponsored students may submit one entry each within specific parameters; however, the content is up to the creativity of the students. “This year’s theme was the “Journey of Peace,” shared Mahus. “The interpretation was up to the student to portray the journey of peace onto their poster. Posters are judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme.” Dansville 8th Grade art teacher, Greg McMaster has had his 8th grade students participate in the annual peace poster contest for the past ten years. “I always like to do communitybased things when I can,” said McMaster. “The Lions Club approached us, and I thought it was a good idea. Ann Mahus has been our liaison the entire time, and she is a tremendous resource for our students.” “Academically, it functions as a kind of pre-test to see where students are at artistically entering 8th grade,” stated McMaster. “There are no right or wrong answers. It is just them, and we really push the creative aspect.” The student participation benefits go beyond academics. “We adjusted our curriculum to make this a part of it,” McMaster continued. “They can have success at local, regional, state and national levels. It is very local, so students

At the local level, the first place winner receives a $50 check, and the second place winner a $25 check. “It is so fun to see the kids’ reactions,” said McMaster. Musto won at the local level before moving onto and winning at the district level which includes at least seven counties.

can receive recognition in town. They have grandparents, aunts and uncles and other family who are involved in the Lions Club, so they might say, ‘I saw your poster, and that was really good.’ It is a smaller pat on the back but an effective pat on the back.”
“I think it is really important that we are basing everything on our youth,” concluded Mahus. “Some of the artwork that we are seeing from these students between the ages of eleven and thirteen is amazing.” Addison Musto will compete at the state level in May.

For years, many people subscribed to the conventional w isdom that suggested people lose 40 to 45 percent of their body heat through their heads.
