neighbor. While I am not able to pay you for your generosity, I do believe the Lord will bless you for your kindness.
All season, my neighbor has selflessly mowed the lawn at the home I rent. I am a single mom with two small children, and I also work full-time, so it is hard for me to find the time to mow the lawn while keeping an eye on my little ones. I couldn’t ask for a more thoughtful, caring We have a neighbor that goes out almost every Friday and/or Saturday night leaving their dogs to bark nonstop for hours. The dogs are obviously barking out of separation anxiety, and we have previously contacted the neighbors to no avail. You would think they would care that their dogs are in distress when they are not home, not to mention we can’t even open our windows on a beautiful summer night. Please be responsible dog owners and care for not only your neighbors but for how this effects your dogs on a regular basis. Thank you. Staff for excellent care while I was at Strong Memorial. Next stop, Conesus Lake Nursing Home where wonderful Nurses, CNAs, PT & OT Staff took good care of me. The food was good too! Last, but not least, our I had a bad fall on August family, church family, friends, 6th. A kind UPS man neighbors, and even people named Bob came to my in our Livonia community rescue. Many thanks to the sent many cards, visited and Doctors, ICU, and 7-3600 brought in flowers, food, and I just came back from walking my dogs and found that five plus feet on each side of [local road] in [local town] had been mowed. I don’t know which governmental agency is responsible, the County or the Town, but I am beyond furious. The growth along the roadway was not an impediment to traffic or to visibility. It was however habitat to pollinators, filled with butterflies and bees to name but two, who foraged there. What was destroyed was nearly two miles of habitat. Now, it and they are gone. For what reason? When will we stop being so focused on what gives us a sense of satisfaction, our need for making things “neat and tidy” in the landscape, that we destroy others in the process? When will we stop going our merry way without any thought to our impact on other lives?

I enjoy reading the Rants, especially those about poor restaurant service. However, while venting may make you feel better, a post about an unnamed restaurant in an unnamed city has no effect. Did you complain to the manager? Did you contact corporate? That gets results. Some of my friends cry, “But I don’t want anyone to lose their job!” Baloney! If the servers have such disdain for their customers, they don’t belong in the service industry. The position will then go to someone who truly needs it and will do a wonderful job. My question is simple: why tailgate before passing? Whether in a legal passing zone or illegally over a double solid yellow line, it’s always the same. Someone is right on my bumper! I’m not “jumping” out of your way, if that’s your intention. I won’t

I was so blessed to see how many people were online, looking to help and volunteering to collect and drop off items for the family who lost their home. Some were from the community, but many were from other towns, complete strangers moved with compassion. Thank you to all those who take the time and make the effort to help those in need!
speed up to accommodate you, and you won’t bully me into pulling over. I usually drive the speed limit, or maybe 5 mph over the limit, so it’s not like I’m crawling. On a 55-mph road with a sharp curve and the yellow recommended speed is 40, l won’t still do 55 because you are in a hurry. Is your impatience important enough to cause an accident? There are many reasons someone could hit their brakes. Please look further than the tip of your nose or the car’s bumper in front of it.

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. Road trips can make for great w eekend getaw ays or even more lengthy vacations for those w ho can’t get enough of the open road. But before embarking on any road trips, motorists should replenish their automotive emergency kits so they are fully prepared in the event of an accident or an injury.
DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall.

Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high.

Vets advise that dog owners should be able to easily feel and count dogs’ ribs when they run their fingers across the side of the animal. Pets viewed from above should display an hourglass figure that includes an indentation near the midsection. The absence of this “waist” may indicate a problem. When observing a pet from the side while he or she is standing, a slight upward slope of the stomach should be visible. A low-hanging abdomen means abdominal fat may be present.

The Kade Project: Making a Difference by Serving Others By Amanda Dudek
A
ccording to Deb Milne-O’Brien, her son, Kade Edward O’Brien was born with that special something that drove him to always help those around him. “It is just one of those things that is embedded in people sometimes,” she said. After Kade passed away in April 2011 due to a tragic motorcycle accident, his friends approached Milne-O’Brien about creating an organization to help others just as Kade always did. Before 2011 came to a close, The Kade Project was born. “Community meant everything to Kade,” said Milne-O’Brien, Founder and Executive Director of The Kade Project. “If he saw someone in need, he would automatically stop and offer to help.” Kade’s friends and Milne-O’Brien wanted to honor Kade by continuing to support those in the Honeoye Falls and Mendon communities. “We originally considered setting up a high school scholarship,” explained Milne-O’Brien. “Then, one of Kade’s friends said we should do something that would help a lot of people because that is what Kade would do, and it just blossomed from there.” The Kade Project began supporting local families with the little things which are often so important. “We help many high school students attend Driver’s Ed class, for example,” said Milne-O’Brien. “It costs about $400. Many young people are willing to work, but their families can’t afford that.” Similarly, The Kade Project has helped ambitious students take AP classes at MCC. “Some students have the opportunity to take an AP class at MCC, and that can be an extra $300-400,” Milne-O’Brien explained. “Parents want the best for their child so badly, but that can be hard. We help several of these children pay for these advanced classes. Some have kept in contact and are doing very well.” “We have also helped students study abroad,” said Milne-O’Brien. “Now, they are doing exactly what they were meant to do.” All The Kade Project asks is that its recipients pay it forward, making a difference for someone else.
Deb and her husband, Edward O’Brien, participating in Toys for Tots!
“I see that now with Kade’s friends who are on our board,” shared Milne-O’Brien. “They are raising their kids to help others, too. They say there is an added something in their lives. While they still would’ve raised their children this way, they also do it because of Kade.” Kade also took his do-for-others attitude into his career when he joined the Marines after graduating high school in 2004. “Kade just wanted to help after 9/11,” shared Milne-O’Brien. “They sent him home from school twice that day because he was so upset.” Each year, the Kade Project sends care kits to soldiers with a connection to the Honeoye Falls and Mendon communities. Sending care kits to those deployed is just one more way of caring for the community Kade loved so much. “We send anywhere from 3-20 care kits out each month,” said Milne-O’Brien. “We focus on those with a

community connection so that we can get to know and support their parents, brothers, sisters and other family. What I do best is help the community itself, and I know that these community connections will go out into the world.” The Kade Project regularly works with the Lima Primary School Outdoor Classroom Project, The Healing Place, Hometown Hero Banners, Little Free Library and the Village of Honeoye Falls. It also supports the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Kade Edward O’Brien served Foundation. “Both of my sons two tours in Iraq. were Marines, and both of them worked with Toys for Tots. Kade actually served as one of its poster boys down South,” said Milne-O’Brien. “We are in our 8th year of working with them, and sometimes, I think we get more out of it than the kids do.”
It isn’t hard to see the origin of Kade’s generosity when speaking with his family. “We have received help, too,” said Milne-O’Brien. “That makes a difference to people. If you can help quietly, respecting the feelings and privacy of those you are helping, that is beautiful. The Kade Project is all based on someone who did that, who believed in the goodness of people and who loved his entire community. People say, ‘Thank you for helping us. What can we do to help somebody else?’ That is what The Kade Project is all about.” The O’Briens also take joy in Kade’s son, Noah, who especially loves participating in Toys for Tots and is proud to know The Kade Project is helping to honor his father. “I have a child who died whose purpose in life was to help everyone else,” stated Milne-O’Brien. “We’re doing that for him.” Enjoy this article? Magic Maze CAKES WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees. To learn more about Carhartt’s latest pants and knee pads, visit www.Carhartt.com. To watch the brand’s latest video, “61 Workers, One Mission,” visit the Carhartt channel on YouTube. Breast cancer is a formidable foe. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 627,000 women lost their lives to breast cancer in 2018. But women are not helpless in the fight against breast cancer, as the WHO notes early detection is critical and could potentially save thousands of lives each year. A proactive approach is a key component of protecting oneself against breast cancer. Many breast cancer symptoms are invisible and not noticeable without a professional cancer screenings, but women can keep an eye out for certain signs of breast cancer they might be able to detect on their own. Monthly self-exams can help women more easily identify changes in their breasts. During such self-exams, women can look for the following signs and symptoms and are advised to report any abnormalities they discover to their physicians immediately.

• Changes in how the breast or nipple feels: Nipple tenderness or a lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm could indicate the presence of breast cancer. Some women may notice changes in the skin texture or an enlargement of the pores in the skin of their breast. In many instances, skin texture has been described as being similar to the texture of an orange peel. Lumps in the breast also may indicate breast cancer, though not all lumps are cancerous.

WHAT IS DEPRESSION? Depression is a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest. The Mayo Clinic says depression can produce a variety of symptoms and affect the way a person thinks, acts and feels. Symptoms may include changes in sleeping patterns, anxiety, fatigue, weight gain or weight loss, unexplained aches and pains, and difficulty concentrating.
• Change in appearance of the breast or nipple: Unexplained changes in the size or shape of the breast; dimpling anywhere on the breast; unexplained swelling or shrinking of the breast, particularly when the shrinking or swelling is exclusive to one side only; and a nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted are some signs and symptoms of breast cancer that can affect the appearance of the breast or nipple. It is common for women’s breasts to be asymmetrical, but sudden asymmetry should be brought to the attention of a physician. • Discharge from the nipple: Any discharge from the nipple, but particularly a clear or bloody discharge, could be a sign of breast cancer. A milky discharge when they are not breastfeeding is not linked to breast cancer but should be discussed with a physician. Learning to recognize the signs and symptoms of breast cancer can increase the likelihood of early diagnosis, which greatly improves women’s chances of surviving this disease. DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor. On the whole I take it that middle age is a happier period than youth. In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air. ~Alexander Smith (1829–1867), “An Essay on an Old Subject”

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 4, 1918, German Chancellor Max von Baden sends a telegraph message to President Woodrow Wilson requesting an armistice between Germany and the Allied powers in World War I. After a difficult month of negotiations, World War I came to an end on Nov. 11, 1918.
Pros and cons of joint replacement surgery To people outside the medical field, joint replacement surgery might sound like a solution that’s considered only after all other options have been exhausted. But joint replacement surgery has become very common, even though some studies have suggested certain procedures are being performed unnecessarily. A 2014 study published in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatology found that one-third of patients who undergo knee replacement surgery may not be appropriate candidates for the procedure because their symptoms are not severe enough to merit aggressive intervention like surgery. The decision to undergo surgery is always a patient’s to make. Weighing some pros and cons of joint replacement surgery can help patients make the most informed decisions possible.
* On Oct. 6, 1961, President John F. Kennedy advises American families to build bomb shelters to protect themselves from atomic fallout in the event of a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union. One year later, the world hovered on the brink of nuclear war after the USSR placed nuclear missiles in Cuba. * On Oct. 5, 1978, Isaac Bashevis Singer wins the Nobel Prize for literature. Singer wrote about Jewish life in Poland and the United States. One of his stories, “Yentl,” was made into a movie directed by and starring Barbra Streisand in 1983.
Pros - The Cleveland Clinic notes that many patients who have undergone joint replacement surgeries have experienced dramatic improvement within a relatively short time after undergoing the surgery. Much of that improvement is related to pain, which for many people becomes overwhelming prior to surgery. Another benefit to joint replacement surgery is the recovery time. For example, the Cleveland Clinic notes that patients who have knee replacement surgery are usually standing and even moving the joint the day after their surgeries. Within six weeks, those same patients are typically walking comfortably with very little support. While each patient is different, any fears that joint replacement surgery will require patients to be immobile for months after surgery are unwarranted. Joint replacement surgery also can be a long-term solution, whereas the alternatives might not be. The Cleveland Clinic says that roughly 85 percent of knee implants will last 20 years, and that life expectancy figures will grow as technology advances. Cons - As beneficial as joint replacement surgery can be, it’s not without downsides. Cost is one such disadvantage. How much a patient pays for the surgery depends on his or her coverage, but AARP notes that the average knee replacement surgery costs $31,000. Such costs can be prohibitive for aging men and women who are no longer working. Another potential disadvantage to going under the knife, especially for those who are borderline candidates for replacement surgeries, is the likelihood that surgery won’t have a significant impact on quality of life. A 2017 study published in the journal BMJ found that knee replacement had minimal effects on quality of life, especially for patients whose arthritis was not severe. Joint replacement surgeries are common. When deciding if surgery is their best option, patients should consider the pros and cons of going under the knife before making their final choice. Has probiotic properties: Some varieties of honey contain large amounts of the friendly bacteria that the body needs to maintain a healthy gut microbiome.
Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. Nothing can be more frustrating than wanting to begin a project only to spend precious time looking for tools. Almost as important as the investment in tools is the investment in tool storage. Hardwood or metal tool chests feature various drawers and cabinets that can house tools of different sizes. By keeping tools in a chest, they’re easy to find and more likely to stay sharp and in good condition. Metal tools should be stored in a cool, dry area, as dust and moisture can cause rusting issues on metal tools. One way to alleviate rust is to spray metal tools with a product like WD-40 to serve as a moisture barrier, then store them in closed drawers or containers. All tools do not necessarily have to be stored in a garage or work shed. Many homeowners like to keep smaller tools in the house so that frequently used items are within reach. A hammer, wrench, pliers, and a few screwdrivers are handy tools to have around inside the house.
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A changing situation calls for a change in plans. Although you might prefer the schedule you had already worked up, you could do better by agreeing to make the needed adjustments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That once seemingly rock-solid proposition you favored might be hiding some serious flaws. Take time to check it more carefully and question anything that seems out of kilter. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Finish up those lingering tasks so that you can then arrange to spend some time in quiet reflection. This will go a long way in restoring both your physical and spiritual energies. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A family situation could heat up and boil over unless you deal with it as soon as possible. Try to persuade other family members to work with you to help cool things down. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Cheer up, Kitty Cat! That low feeling will begin to ebb by midweek, and you should be back in the social swirl in time for the weekend. A longpostponed deal could be starting up again. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Going too fast and too far on too little knowledge could be risky. Best to slow down and check for any gaps in your information. It’s what you don’t know that could hurt you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to make peace among quarreling family members, friends or colleagues can be tough. Expect some resistance, maybe even some expressions of resentment. But stay with it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Changing your mind doesn’t have to be a problem once you realize that you might have good and sufficient cause to do so. Make your explanations clear and complete. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unkept promise can be irksome and easily raise the Archer’s ire. But instead of getting into a confrontation, take time to check why someone you relied on came up short. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A new workplace distraction creates an unnecessary delay. The sooner you deal with it, the better for all concerned. A personal matter also should be attended to as soon as possible. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Once again, the Aquarian’s gift for applying both practical and creative methods to resolve a situation makes all the difference. Personal relationships thrive during the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A relationship appears to be losing its oncestrong appeal for reasons that might be different from what you think. An open and honest talk could lead to some surprising revelations. BORN THIS WEEK: Your life is bound by your belief that character counts more than anything else. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Hang curtains. Curtains can help homeowners cut down on heating and cooling costs. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, properly hung draperies can reduce heat loss by as much as 25 percent. In the summer, curtains can block the hot rays from the sun from entering a home, reducing the need to turn up air conditioning units. While curtains won’t fix leaks or block hot or cold air from entering a home, they can serve as a buffer between a home’s inhabitants and the air seeping in through leaks.

Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.
