Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson Paper lunch bags make excellent receptacle for cat litter waste. They are much more environmentally friendly than plastic bags, and can be folded down and placed directly into an outside trash can. The bags are easily stored near the litter box, because they lay flat.

SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Share some cooking duties. Another way to simplify cooking for a crowd is to invite guests to bring along a side dish or dessert. Guests who live nearby can make something in advance of the big meal, while hosts can hand over their kitchens to overnight guests who express a willingness to contribute their own homecooked dish to the party. Sharing the cooking duties gives hosts more time to connect with friends and family and serves as a great way to plan the menu in advance.

Educators and Caregivers Educators and caregivers, which includes teachers, babysitters and daycare staff, do a lot for children. Their efforts should be recognized during the holiday season. School systems and daycare facilities may have rules in place governing which items staff can accept, so inquire about such policies in advance of the holiday season. When gifting babysitters, make sure gifts are age-appropriate. If a babysitter is a minor, cash may make for the best gift. For teachers and daycare workers, consider a gift certificate to a well-regarded local eatery or a school supplies store, as many teachers purchase classroom supplies with their own money.

“I’ve an Old Mule” By Frank Palumbo

A

thin sea once blanketed our region. Where trees now grow in abundance and flower gardens blossom, tiny shell-like creatures once thrived. Over hundreds of millions of years, shells and sediment from the sea bottom formed into limestone, shale, sandstone, dolomite and other layers of rock. Geology captured a sea and transformed it into a landmass. As eons passed, people discovered this virgin real estate, first the Native Americans and then settlers from foreign lands. The United States was flourishing from coastal colonies on the eastern seaboard into a land of enterprise which needed to extend its grasp. Goods were becoming more numerous, and people needed to be fed from the breadbasket of Western New York. Paths traveled by settlers in covered wagons that were once Indian trails would no longer do. Rivers and the sea were the quickest way to move products over sizable distances. Farmers in Western New York were eager for the manufactured goods of New York City, and the increasing populations of seaboard cities needed to be fed. A cheaper and faster method of transport was needed. A waterway from New York City to the Great Lakes was required. But how? DeWitt Clinton was an astute politician and former mayor of New York City. In 1817, he was elected governor of New York. He was a member of the Erie Canal Commission which was formed to study whether constructing a waterway across New York State was feasible. Clinton advanced the idea for a canal, despite ridicule and numerous slurs. Soon the plan was referred to as “Clinton’s Ditch”. If approved, the project would cost seven million dollars, an ungodly amount in 1817. President Jefferson refused funds for the development of the canal. Clinton would not be deterred, and funding was procured though the sale of bonds. On July 4th, 1817, construction of the canal began in Rome, NY. The terrain that the forty-footwide, four-foot-deep ditch would have to overcome was colossal. The Montezuma swamp would have to be crossed. Men and animals were mired in the slime. Malaria (Genesee fever) raged, and pneumonia was common. A thousand men died of the fever, causing a shortage of workers. “Dig we must” was the order, and dig they did.

Boats on the Erie Canal (submitted photo)

The route of the canal would extend from Buffalo to Albany, where it would then join the majestic Hudson river to New York City. Engineers took advantage of the Mohawk River gap, saving time and money. Ingenious gravity locks were constructed throughout the canal’s course. Paths along the canal’s direction were needed in order to accommodate the mules which provided the muscle for the packet boats. Passenger packet boats were no more than fifteen feet wide, since traffic on the canal was a two-way affair. Quarters were crowded at best, and the price of a ticket was calculated at pennies per mile. Stables and lodgings were scattered along the canal’s track. Mules were procured as needed. In 1905, a songwriter from New York (Thomas Allen) came to Rochester where he scribbled the lines of a ditty which we all sang as a child – “Low Bridge, Everybody Down.” The song references a loyal, hardworking mule named Sal. Sal no longer travels the towpaths, but if you visit the remnants of “Clinton’s Ditch,” you might still hear the echoes of her hooves. Enjoy this article? When it com es tim e to update the electrical system , it is alw ays best to w ork w ith licensed and bonded electricians w ho have the expertise to w ork w ith electrical w iring w ithout getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely w ill recom m end upgrading the electrical panel to bring m ore pow er from the utility poles into the hom e. This can include replacing the existing m eter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle m ore pow er or replacing item s that are obsolete or dangerous. M any older hom es are only capable of handling a m inim um num ber of am ps, utilizing just a few circuits. But now adays, w hen hom eow ners have far m ore electronics in their hom es than they once did, increased dem and on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety m easure to prevent the w ire from becom ing overheated and causing a fire. How ever, in som e old system s, the circuit breaker w ill not trip, and this can be problem atic. Rew iring a hom e is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over tim e, and new w ires m ay be needed. This can be m essy and tim e-consum ing, but it’s a sm all price to pay for safety. When rew iring an electrician also m ay suggest new outlets. M any hom e building codes now require outlets w ith ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathroom s and other room s exposed to m oisture. Som e older hom es m ay not even have three-pronged outlets, so this w ill necessitate an update as w ell. Page 7

STAY SAFE WHEN STRINGING HOLIDAY LIGHTS Lighting displays are one of the many things that help make the holiday season a special time of year. Often awe-inspiring, holiday lighting displays present a perfect opportunity for communities and individuals to showcase their festive sides. Safety should always be a priority when stringing holiday lights both inside and outside a home. The National Fire Protection Association notes that, between 2009 and 2014, fire departments in the United States responded to an average of 210 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year. Lighting displays strung on home exteriors also can pose safety risks if homeowners do not exercise caution. Following some simple safety procedures when decorating with lights can ensure everyone enjoys a safe and happy holiday season. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There could be an unexpected change in plans for your upcoming holiday travels. But keep in mind that a little flexibility goes a long way in resolving any disappointments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new relationship might not be responding quite as quickly as you’d hoped. Could you be expecting too much too soon? Try to ease up and let things happen at their own pace. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) As we approach the frenetic pace of pre-holiday planning, take time out now to reconnect with the wonderful people who share your life, especially the one who also shares your dreams. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A misunderstanding should be resolved before you get caught up in the flurry of holiday preparations. Set your pride aside and deal with it, regardless of who might have hurt whom first. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Being told that a colleague might have been trying to undercut your effectiveness might or might not be true. Get all the facts before you even think about acting on this so-called information. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good idea to start your holiday preparation plans early in order to avoid a time crunch if an unresolved workplace situation causes a problem. That old friend might have some welcome news. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s actions continue to surprise you, but this time with positive results. Could be your wise counsel finally got through. It’s like having an early holiday gift, isn’t it? SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your reluctance to act in a current situation could be traced to your inner self advising you to take more time to study its complexities before you attempt to deal with it. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Soothing hurt feelings before they can ignite an angry outburst is the wise thing to do. And, of course, when it comes to doing the “wisdom thing,” you do it so well. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Budget your time so that you can handle both your workplace duties and your personal holiday planning -- including travel arrangements -- without burning out on either end. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might find that you still need to firm up one or two of those still-outstanding decisions so that you finally can move forward as you had planned. Weigh the facts, then act. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You usually don’t carry grudges, but you might feel this is one time when you’re justified in doing so. But aren’t you spending too much energy holding onto it? Let it go and move on. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of using your quiet strength to persuade people to follow their better instincts and do the right thing. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 7, 1805, explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, having made a difficult trip across the rugged Rockies, set up winter camp near the mouth of the Columbia River. They named it Fort Clatsop, after the local Indian tribe. * On Dec. 6, 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, officially ending the institution of slavery, is ratified when Georgia votes to ratify. Mississippi, however, would not submit documentation to abolish slavery until 2013. * On Dec. 5, 1945, five U.S. Navy Avenger torpedo-bombers take off from Florida on a routine three-hour training mission near the Bahamas. Two hours later, the planes disappeared. Mariner aircraft, sent to locate the planes, also disappeared. No trace of the men or aircraft were ever found.

How H ow P People eople W With ith L Low ow V Vision ision C Can an S Stay tay S Safe afe A nd d IIndependent nd depend dent And (NAPS)—People with low vision have blind spots that can make it difficult or impossible to drive, read or see faces. These impairments cannot be corrected by surgery or glasses. What’s more, too many are blind to the realization that much can be done to improve their quality of life. What Can Be Done In fact, low vision rehabilitation services help people make the most of the vision they have. The first step is to get an eye exam by an ophthalmologist, a physician who specializes in medical and surgical eye care. Who Can Help An ophthalmologist can determine the full extent of vision loss and exact location of blind spots. Either the ophthalmologist or a low vision specialist can then determine the best techniques and devices that can help you get around your individual challenges. Where EyeCare America Comes In If you’re concerned about the cost of the exam, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeCare America program may be able to help. This national public service program provides eye care through volunteer ophthalmologists for eligible seniors 65 and older; and those at increased risk for eye disease. As one EyeCare America patient said, “I’m a senior living on a low income. It had been 30 years since I’d had an eye exam. It was a true blessing to receive this service.” Low Vision Services Offer Hope The field of vision rehabilitation has advanced significantly over the years, offering more effective technologies and strategies. Today, ophthalmologists’ solutions range from simple, portable video magnifiers to enlarge text and objects to high-tech glasses with cameras that let people read text and see faces. In addition, there are many simple changes people can make on their own to help them live better: • Improve contrast. Contrasting colors can make it easier to accomplish household tasks and improve safety. Put dark place mats under white place settings, get area rugs that are a contrasting color with the floor and kitchen towels and cutting boards that contrast with the counter top. Use contrasting colored tape along the edges of rugs, stair steps and lamp shades. • Improve lighting. Every year, about three million older Americans are treated for injuries from falls, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many of these falls are caused by low vision. Add lighting to staircases and dark hallways. Remove rugs from hallways to prevent tripping. Task lighting in the kitchen can make food preparation safer and easier. • Reduce clutter and organize. A cluttered house is more difficult to navigate and can contribute to falls and frustration. When each item has a specific place and is identified with a high-contrast label, it’s easier to locate items needed for everyday living. • Embrace technology. Books on tape and personal voice-activated assistants, such as Google Home or Amazon’s Alexa, can be enormously helpful for people who can no longer see well enough to read, dial a phone or set a thermostat. With a simple voice command, these can phone dial a friend for you while the thermostat dials up the heat. While there isn’t one strategy or tool that works for every person, vision rehabilitation offers hope for many and can help people stay in their homes and continue doing the things they love. DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation a year ago. A week after that, I had an MRI that showed I’d had a ministroke and probably several others in the past. I love ribeye steak, and eat it maybe two or three times a year. Is this safe? -- R.A. ANSWER: Atrial fibrillation is a rhythm problem of the heart. The natural rhythm is lost, so the heartbeat becomes irregular. Because of the lack of normal movement in the heart, the blood can pool and form clots in the left atrium; these clots can travel downstream to lodge in a blood vessel. Clots can cut off the blood supply to the area where they lodge. It’s most critical when it happens in the brain, since if brain cells die, function is lost. A stroke is just a focal area of cell death in the brain. The size and location of the area in the brain where cell death occurs determines how significant the stroke is. Strokes can range from unnoticeable to devastating to fatal. Most people with atrial fibrillation take medication to reduce the risk of stroke. Eating poorly can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke as well, but most commonly this happens via a different mechanism. High amounts of saturated fat -- such as in ribeye steak, which is fattier than many cuts of beef -- increase the risk of damage to blood vessels through buildup of cholesterol plaques. These plaques cut off blood supply, and this causes a heart attack if the plaques are lodged in the arteries of the heart, a stroke if in the brain, and various problems if in other parts of the body. In people who have a history of stroke, it’s particularly important to take steps to reduce further risk. That means a discussion with your doctor about whether you are on the best treatment for atrial fibrillation and whether you have evidence of cholesterol plaques. Even if you don’t have any evidence of plaques, a healthy diet of mostly plants, with whole grains, nuts and seeds, some fatty fish (if you enjoy that) and sparse amounts of meats reduces many health risks. However, two or three steaks a year is not going to cause harm. The best data available shows that people who have 100 grams (just over 3 ounces) of red meat a week are at the lowest risk of developing blood vessel problems. It’s not clear that zero is better than that small amount. In any event, I am a firm believer that enjoying life is the goal. If having a steak a few times a year is truly enjoyable, the risk is small, and you should enjoy those meals without guilt. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is the body’s rate of absorption for calcium? -- A. ANSWER: The textbook answer is 20% to 40%, but in reality, the answer is very complicated, as it depends on total body and intracellular calcium, vitamin D levels, presence of phosphates in food and other factors. The short answer is that it’s usually exactly what it needs to be when things work properly. If the body is deficient in calcium, then absorption is maximal, but still most calcium in food is not absorbed. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2019 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia: • Trouble communicating or finding words. • Difficulty completing complex tasks. • Challenges with planning and organization. • Episodes of confusion and disorientation. • Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party. • Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations. Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are other types of dementia. The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia. Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may mistake for Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that people with DLB often have not only memory loss and cognitive problems common in Alzheimer’s, but they also display initial or early symptoms such as sleep disturbances, well-formed visual hallucinations, slowness, gait imbalance or other Parkinsonian movement features, which can lead to misdiagnosis. Volunteers… We Need Your Help! Featured Nonprofit: The Community Reading Partnership (CRP) is a broad-based community coalition of organizations, individuals, businesses, schools, and libraries that have joined forces to promote family reading practices throughout the greater Canandaigua community to improve the quality of life in our community. The non-profit group is seeking Board members and other volunteers for its literacy projects.CRP meets at the Wood Library in Canandaigua. Literacy initiatives have included Books for Newborns, Prescription to Read and Welcome to Kindergarten and biannual Children’s Book Fest. In 2020, we will present our 3rd Book Fest, and we (the board) are already planning! This event is free and totally dependent on volunteer help. CRP maintains 17 Little Red Bookshelves stocked with new and gently used books available free for all ages in Ontario County. For information, please email communityreadingpart@gmail.com. Interested in being a featured nonprofit? Contact us at Hometown@gvpennysaver.com.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

People don’t like to let others in front of them because they feel they should wait their turn patiently. Lately, I have been letting sometimes two people behind me, people with separate carts or with one or two items in their hands go first. It doesn’t hurt to be kind to someone. I have had

two items or one item, and someone in front of me with $120 worth of groceries, and they didn’t dream of letting me go in front of them. I had a gift card and wasn’t sure how to do it in self-checkout, so went through the regular line. I have decided to do unto others as I would have them do unto me. Remember the Golden Rule. Even if people don’t let me ahead of them, I continue to do so, knowing I did the right thing, and it is more commendable to do a kindness and something for someone that did not do the same.

911 as the car was probably extremely hot inside. After another 10 minutes and still no cop, the owner came out. I exchanged words with her, and much to my dismay, she said she was only in the store for two minutes. These people who leave their pets or children in hot vehicles don’t deserve either! People who do this, in my opinion, are the epitome of ignorance and selfishness. I was only sorry that the cop never showed up during this time so this woman could have been charged with animal cruelty and perhaps even had her sweet little puppy taken from her!

There is a reason brush and tall grass is cut short on sides of the roads. The small critters that are frolicking in the tall grasses have no idea a road is only inches away. And then slam, they’re roadkill. If the grasses are short, they can

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.

AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS Involve the entire family. It can be embarrassing to lose a job, but look to family for support. Children may not need to know every detail, but they can have a cursory awareness of family finances and understand they may have to cut back until Mom or Dad is working again.

Rather than emphasize what you did, highlight what you plan to do. This means giving greater weight to the expertise that will translate into your new position. Chances are you can find skills that you honed in one or more jobs that translate into credentials that can be used on another. All of the skills mentioned should be relevant to your career objective and not just added to pad the résumé. Therefore, unless your brief stint waiting tables exemplifies how you developed customer service skills, eliminate it.
