HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your natural Arian leadership qualities make you the person others will follow in tackling that important project. But don’t get so involved in the work that you neglect your personal life. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Aspects favor sorting through your possessions, both at work and at home, to start giving away what you don’t use, don’t need or don’t like. Relax later with someone special. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The issues are not quite as clear as they should be. That’s why you need to avoid getting involved in disputes between colleagues at work or between relatives or personal friends. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You’ll get lots of support from others if you own up to your mistake quickly and include a full and honest explanation. Learn from this experience so that you don’t repeat it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) There might be some early confusion over a major move, whether it’s at work or at home. But once you get a full breakdown of what it entails, it should be easier to deal with. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Creating order out of chaos, even in the most untidy spaces, should be no problem for organized Virgos. So go ahead and do it, and then accept praise from impressed colleagues. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Whether it’s for business purposes or just for leisure, a trip might be just what you need right now. You would benefit both from a change of scenery and from meeting new people. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While things generally go well this week, a romantic situation seems to have stalled. But you can restart it if you want to. Then again, maybe this is a chance to reassess the situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A meeting that was promised quite a while back could finally happen. So be sure you’re prepared with everything you’ll need to make your case sound convincing and doable. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A workplace blunder could create a problem down the line unless you deal with it right now to see how and why it happened. Don’t be surprised at what you might learn. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This is a good time to re-sort your priorities and see if adjustments are called for. Be honest with yourself as you decide what to keep, what to discard and what to change. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Letting yourself be bathed in the outpouring of love and support from those who care for you will help you get through a difficult period sooner rather than later. Good luck. BORN THIS WEEK: You have an uncanny gift for reaching out to all people and creating bridges of understanding among them.

I returned to the co-op and happily found that a good Samaritan had returned it to the office, restoring my faith in mankind. Thank you!
Thank you to the Lady Braves volleyball coaches for a great, positive season! And to the parents for organizing a fabulous banquet at the end to celebrate. Everything was great from the photos to the food. Kudos! I lost my credit card while pumping gas at a Canandaigua dairy co-op. Later when I realized my loss,
Once again during a major windstorm, with winds gusting to near 50mph or above, about half the streetlights in town went out. It’s also clear that people need to learn the rules of driving! If you approach an intersection with a traffic signal that’s out, then it’s considered a FOUR WAY STOP. Please don’t just slow down or assume because you’re not on the side street that you have the right of way. Just stop, look, respect other drivers and go on your way again. As a grocery store cashier, I’m frustrated with the majority of customers at check out who stand and watch me lift their filled bags or heavy items into their carts. Not one grocery store chain in Rochester pays its cashiers a living wage, and this is physical, hard work. PLEASE help load your filled bags into your cart if you see them GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

and be happy at Christmas and your donations made that possible for a lot of children. We thank you again for the great support and look forward to working with you all again next year.
The Memorial Day Detachment of the Marine Corps League would like to thank all those people and businesses that donated toys or cash to our Toys for Tots campaign this year. We would also like to thank all the agencies that worked with us to distribute the toys to the children. We collected and distributed almost 5500 toys to approximately 1,600 children in Ontario and Livingston counties. The toys made a huge difference to children who may have otherwise not received a new toy for Christmas. Every child deserves a reason to smile

past seven years, why not just ignore the door? How about donating a box to our troops that fight for your freedom? Instead, you choose to scream at her every single year. I hope you’re proud of yourself screaming at the local Girl Scout who sells cookies in the senior community. She chose this community 7 years ago because the people reminded her of her grandparents. It was a safe place to walk and she could learn lifetime skills which cookie sales teach such as money management, public speaking and decision making. Considering we have had permission to sell in this community for the
Did you not know that you would be expected to bag groceries, and put people’s groceries in the carts when you took the job? If you feel it is such hard work to put groceries in a cart, then you need to go the doctor to get a physical. Don’t try and make the customers who go through your line feel guilty because of part of your job! We all have jobs! Maybe you should get a job where you can sit down, like the toll booth workers.

Thank you so much Avon Lioness Club for your donation to the Avon Hometown Hero Banner program! Because of your generosity we will be able to replace some of the worn banners. We are a volunteer committee trying to hang the flags with limited funds. It is sometimes challenging to keep track of who is active and if a flag should fly, but we try our best. Thanks also for the warm support from the parents who have a son or daughter’s flag hanging. It is a very personal program for us parent volunteers to keep it going. Banner applications can be picked up at the Village and Town offices. Avon Hometown Hero Banner Committee
Anyone who is thinking about home improvements, do your homework first. Check with the BBB, get lots of references, but most importantly get a contract that specifies the amount for each part of the job if it has for example roofing and or fascia and soffit work. We were scammed by a contractor who gave us one price for work with different areas of our house. After he finished one part and was unable to do the rest because of winter coming on, we paid him all but a small portion of the cost. The next year, he wanted three and a half times more for the work than we had verbally agreed to. We tried unsuccessfully in small claims court to get justice because we had no written proof. We learned our lesson.

Sneezing Can Provoke This Unusual Vertigo
Convenient Brighton location 200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: After many years of various treatments,
Patient Focused • Family Friendly Restorative Dentistry
including allergy shots, food studies and an ear tube, I was recently diagnosed with “semicircular canal dehiscence.” Can you explain what this is and the treatment (besides surgery) to relieve the symptoms of inner ear pressure, dizziness and pressure and pulsation in the head? Are there any medications? -- J.D.W. ANSWER: Semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is an unusual cause of vertigo. Vertigo is sometimes referred to as dizziness, but “dizziness” may refer to both unsteadiness (a feeling that you are going to pass out, which medically is referred to as “presyncope”) or true vertigo (a sensation of movement when the person is actually still). The vertigo in semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is different from most other causes of vertigo because it can be provoked by loud noises, coughing or sneezing. It is caused by abnormally thin bone in the semicircular canals, part of the organ of balance in the inner ear. The diagnosis is confirmed by a CT scan of the temporal bone. The only treatment I have read that consistently is effective is surgery. An ear tube is sometimes tried in people who have symptoms with pressure changes. Medications used in some cases of vertigo, such as meclizine (Antivert), usually will make SCDS symptoms worse in the long term. Anti-nausea medications like ondansetron (Zofran) may help if nausea is severe, but have their own side effects. Vestibular rehabilitation by a specially trained physical or occupational therapist may have some benefit if surgery isn’t contemplated.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is 72 years old. This year he was
RECOVERING FROM STROKE (NAPSI)—Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability—in fact, it’s even more disabling than it is fatal. The period following a stroke can be difficult for patients and their loved ones, as they grapple with the uncertainties of recovery. For example, Sabrina Warren-White was a busy professional when a stroke in left her unable to speak or use her right side. She quickly began a rigorous rehabilitation program and can now speak, walk and use her right arm. Doctor’s Advice Once acute medical issues are resolved, focusing on rehabilitation is paramount to helping people build their strength, capabilities and confidence, said Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, the Ruth L. Works Professor and Chairman for the Department of Neurology and Co-director for the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute and KY Clinic at the University of Kentucky. “Most patients will recover to some degree, but a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation is crucial because it has been shown to result in better outcomes for patients,” Dr. Goldstein added. Access to coordinated and intense therapies after a stroke is important because the greatest amount of recovery tends to occur in the first 30 days, Dr. Goldstein said. “Intensity of rehabilitation therapy matters,” he pointed out. “Patients need access to good rehabilitation services and should continue to work at it, even after that initial recovery period.” Where To Turn To help, the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally sponsored by Kindred Rehabilitation Services, raises awareness that stroke is largely beatable through high-quality rehabilitation, patient support, and implementation of Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Guidelines. Patients and caregivers can access more information about recovery and how to make informed decisions at www.StrokeAssociation.org/recovery. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

diagnosed with an enlarged prostate. For now, the doctor has inserted a catheter. My question is: What process or what treatment is best at his age? We are in the Philippines. -- M.M.C. ANSWER: Enlargement of the prostate gland is a common problem for men in their 70s and older. Sometimes it gets so bad that a man cannot urinate at all or the pressure in the bladder is at risk of damaging the kidney. In those cases, a catheter often is used as a temporizing measure. Unfortunately, a catheter causes inflammation, so it may actually worsen the prostate problem temporarily while still protecting the kidneys. Because of this, the catheter usually needs to be kept in only for about one to two weeks. During this time, medication usually is started to try to reduce prostate size. For most men, a benign (not cancerous) enlarged prostate can be treated with medication -- an alpha blocker, like tamsulosin, sometimes with a second medicine, like finasteride. If that doesn’t work, there are several surgical options. His doctor needs to be sure that the enlarged prostate isn’t cancer. A physical exam and blood tests may answer that question; other times, a biopsy is needed. There is no best treatment for everyone. It depends on how large his prostate is, any other medical problems he may have and the expertise of the doctor treating him. In the United States, the options include a traditional surgery, called a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP); laser-based treatments; other heat-based treatments (microwave, water vapor ablation and radiowave); and even more newer treatments that are less well-studied. In general, medical therapy is worth a try for most men before considering surgery.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Though certain elements of modern-day Valentine’s Day celebrations can be traced back to the 14th century, chocolate is not one of them. In his 1382 poem, “Parlement of Foules,” English poet Geoffrey Chaucer became the first to connect romance with St. Valentine’s Day. Over the next several centuries, the day’s connection to romance only grew stronger, and by the Victorian era in England, it was not uncommon for lovers to profess their affections through songs, poetry and even the giving of roses as gifts. It was during the Victorian era that British chocolate manufacturer Richard Cadbury began searching for ways to use the cocoa butter that his company was extracting during the production of their drinking chocolate. In 1861, Cadbury decided to produce edible chocolates, which he even sold and marketed in heartshaped boxes decorated with images of Cupid and rosebuds. It would be a few more decades before edible chocolates caught on in the United States, where they remain a must-have item for many Valentine’s Day celebrants more than 150 years after Cadbury first began selling them.

LEARN HOW TO WRITE A CLASSIC LOVE LETTER Today’s digital world has given rise to fast, stinted communications. According to the Pew Research Center, texting is the most widely used smartphone app, with 97 percent of Americans using it at least once a day. Across the globe, 8.3 trillion text messages are sent each year. That translates to roughly 16 million messages per minute. In addition to text messaging, social media posts are generally concise and short on depth. The written form of communication has changed dramatically in the last decade, as letter-writing and other forms of prose have all but faded away. But come Valentine’s Day, it can be special to dust off that pen and paper to express oneself via the written word in the name of love. Love letters are cherished keepsakes that can be kept for years. Such couples can illustrate a couple’s present-day love for one another and shed insight on their relationship years later. Here are some steps for writing a romantic love letter or note. • Jot down ideas and inspiration. Make a list of attributes and qualities in a spouse or romantic interest that you would like to highlight. Write down phrases and terms that come to mind. These words can serve as the foundation for the letter. • Categorize your thoughts into three areas. Jot down things that you like and love about the person, things that the person may do for you or your family that you appreciate, and various memories from throughout the years. • Write what you know. Do not feel pressured to make this letter more complicated than it has to be. The words will come when you write from the heart. While you can use other letters to spur ideas, do not lose your voice or try to mimic someone else’s work. • Make the letter personal and specific. Small details are important and make love letters more meaningful. Such details illustrate to a significant other that this letter was specifically written with them in mind. • Disregard length. The letter does not have to be a certain length. Whether it is a paragraph or several pages, the letter will be a successs if it says what you want to express. It doesn’t have to be long if that’s not your style. Writing a love letter can be a wonderful way to express romantic sentiments this Valentine’s Day. REAL ESTATE

Gordy & Friends Improves the Lives of Local Dogs B Y
A M A N DA
If you have ever felt concern for a dog who always seems to be chained up outside, Kathy Karle-Walsh understands how you feel. Walsh founded Gordy & Friends in 2013 not long after adopting her dog, Gordon, from Lollypop Farms. She named her organization after Gordon. “When my husband and I adopted him from Lollypop, I kind of went crazy about dogs,” said Walsh, referring to the passion she felt to help as many as she could. “I really started Gordy & Friends in 2012, but it wasn’t until 2013 that I officially put the information on Facebook.” Gordy & Friends is an outreach organization and nonprofit. “We are not a rescue,” Walsh clarified. “Our primary goal is to help dogs who are chained or penned 24/7.” Walsh and the volunteers who work with Gordy & Friends were inspired to work in Ontario, Livingston and Steuben Counties where they look for dogs to help as well as some of Monroe County in which they help some families. “There are lots of dogs in underserved areas where owners need help,” she said. “We work right on the spot to improve the life of the dog.” Although volunteers and donations came slowly at first, both have increased since Gordy & Friends became a nonprofit in 2015. “It was a lot of hard work, but it was definitely worth it,” said Walsh. “More groups are sending us food, dog supplies and dog toys. We have great volunteers and supporters who are very good to us.” Gordy & Friends appreciate the support as they are tackling a very big issue. “People do not know that in New York State, with some exceptions, it is not illegal to leave your dog chained up outside constantly,” explained Walsh. Therefore, she pointed out, calling the authorities usually does not change things for the dog, so that’s why they help instead of calling others to get involved. “Gordy & Friends is there nonjudgmentally, not to call the authorities, but to change life for the dog,” said Gordon, the namesake of Walsh. “We would like to see someone go Gordy & Friends from having a dog that was an outside dog to having a dog that is now living inside as a member of the family. We would love to put ourselves out of business!” Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that will happen anytime soon. “It doesn’t happen overnight, but we are dedicated to the dogs,” shared Walsh. “We help with spaying and neutering and vet care. We help by walking these dogs - with permission, of course. We are hoping to model and be a positive example.” Gordy & Friends also cares about pet owners. “We are not just kind to dogs but people, too, whether this means helping out once or regularly,” said Walsh. “We are working toward a social revolution, closing the gap between what is legal and what is best for the dog.” - Kathy Karle-Walsh The disconnect often comes from personal experiences. “If you were raising chickens in your backyard, and I told you that you should bring your chickens inside to live in your house with you, you might think that is ridiculous. Sometimes, owners of a dog that has always lived outside and who grew up with their dogs living outside feel the same way.”

Still, Gordy & Friends plans to continue helping wherever they can. “We see dogs in all states of need, but one of the saddest things is a lonely dog; it’s heartbreaking,” stated Walsh. “We are out there just trying to help. Many times, people are Kathy Karle-Walsh with a dog she is walking. Volunteering to very open and walk dogs is one of the ways Gordy & Friends helps. happy to accept our help, and we are very thankful. We want to uplift, help and be positive.” Dogs are a lifetime commitment of time, energy, attention, and love. Please consider all of these before adopting one. • Dogs require time, energy and love, including attention and care. • Dogs need daily exercise and interaction. Consider 20-30-minute walks as well as playtime and interaction for physical and emotional well-being. • Do not leave your dog outside chained or penned nor indoors crated or isolated 24/7. Dogs need interaction, mobility and socialization. • Consider the cost of healthy food and vet care - your dog deserves both, and fresh, clean water. • Training your dog takes time, patience, and kindness. Never use force or anger; it will not work. • Spay or Neuter: it is for your dog’s health, and it is also humane. Gordy & Friends gives pet owners options • Consider the grooming needs your beyond leaving pets chained outside. dog will have such as fur, nails, flea prevention, etc. • Please adopt; shelters and rescues are full of dogs and puppies who all need love and a second chance. • Research the breed that will fit your lifestyle best and accommodate the needs of that breed.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel Cracking The Code To Society’s Most Feared Disease (NAPS)-Even more than cancer, there’s one disease most people fear. The thought of falling prey to Alzheimer’s disease and to the inevitable desecration of the mind is something that can make even the bravest shudder. After all, if you’re robbed of your sense of who you really are, you’re doomed to live your last days without the dignity that defines you and that you hold dear. Perhaps the ultimate horror of Alzheimer’s disease is that it is as indiscriminate, merciless, and devastating as a wind-swept wildfire. As a result, a disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer’s disease has become a Holy Grail of sorts in the biotech industry. The disease is so ubiquitous, it casts a shadow over just about everyone’s family. At the same time, it exacts a devastating financial toll on society “perhaps even greater than cancer” with Alzheimer’s disease patients needing 24-hour care for an average of eight years and sometimes as many as 20 years. The estimated cost for caring for Americans with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias is well in excess of a quarter of a trillion dollars per annum. This doesn’t even include unpaid caregiving. Also, Alzheimer’s disease is ranked as the third leading cause of death of seniors in the United States, surpassed only by heart disease and cancer. Approximately 6 million Americans have become its victims, and this number rises each year as lifespans increase due to advancements in medical science. Progress From Pharmaceuticals - Fortunately, a few pharmaceutical companies, including Biogen, AC Immune SA and NervGen Pharma, have come up with ways to potentially treat the condition and perhaps slow it down. NervGen’s medical researchers are working on what may become an important breakthrough for Alzheimer’s and other afflictions that are defined by nerve damage. Could This Be Modern Medicine’s Holy Grail? Until recently, NervGen’s focus has mostly been on developing nerve regeneration for the treatment of spinal cord injuries. In fact, some remarkable results have been achieved in preclinical trials, including one where the treated rodents regained substantial functionality in their legs after sustaining severe spinal cord damage. Assuming it also works in humans, the medical science world will be paying very close attention because there are no known therapies that can stimulate human nerve regeneration now. In addition, NervGen intends to commence a Phase 2 clinical trial for treating multiple sclerosis. The company’s drug candidate is expected to treat many of such debilitating symptoms as numbness, loss of sensation, chronic and debilitating pain, partial loss of movement, paralysis, and even incontinence due to additional mechanisms of action called “remyelination” and “plasticity.” The research team also believes that the same nerve-rejuvenating biotechnology can be adapted to treat Alzheimer’s disease, not just mitigate its symptoms due to its truly novel and innovate approach. The essence of this technology is that it unlocks a damaged nervous system’s natural ability to repair itself. Proprietary molecules “unstick” nerves and prevent new ones from getting stuck by interfering with synaptic-like connections so the nerves can regrow in places that are normally highly inhibited by scar tissue. Heretofore, no drugs have been approved anywhere in the world for nerve regeneration and remyelination, as well as improved plasticity in damaged nerves. Additionally, existing treatments are not considered very effective. So, the stakes are especially high for NervGen to create a blockbuster drug candidate that promises to even outshine any other Alzheimer’s disease drug. This is a wonderful opportunity to pioneer nerve repairing drug therapies that target some of the most devastating and pervasive diseases known to humankind. DID YOU KNOW? The planet is comprised of a remarkable set of organisms that, when working correctly, produce some awe-inspiring results. However, the Earth is constantly under attack from a growing population and the mechanisms of man that can have very real environmental impacts. Education is the key to inciting real change. One in four mammals is at risk of extinction, while 78 percent of marine mammals are threatened by an early and preventable death due to getting caught in fishing nets intended for other species. Furthermore, at least 50 million acres of rainforest are lost every year, totaling an area the size of Great Britain, says the organization Solar Energy World. By making real changes, including recycling, cutting down on emissions and protecting wildlife habitats, individuals can help to preserve the world’s resources for many years to come.

This is an opportunity for all single people who may not have received Valentine’s Day gifts to gather at restaurants and eat a dish called “black noodles” as they celebrate their singleton status.

LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME (NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise. Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased. Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s: • Easily cut • Noncombustible, with a melting point of approximately 2,150° F • Fire resistant • Not likely to rot or promote the growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. For great soundproofing results, you can install the stone wool insulation in your home theater, basement, home office, laundry room, furnace room and even the washrooms. Its high-density and unique fiber structure reduces noise traveling from one room to another. Learn More: For further facts, visit www.rockwool.com/products/safensound.

ENJOY VALENTINE’S DAY WHEN THE BABYSITTER’S BUSY
Puzzle Answers This Week
Let the kids help Enlist the kids to give you the night off from dinner, or have them select the perfect take-out menu for a Valentine’s Day dinner. Children do not always have the opportunity to give back to their parents, and on February 14 they can step up their game. Move up bed times a little so the kids are tucked in early enough to allow you to cuddle on the couch. WORDS TYPED WITH ONLY THE MIDDLE AND INDEX FINGERS
COUNTDOWN TO VALENTINE’S DAY February 12: Hug Day On this day the world celebrates the uplifting and comforting power of hugs, which can be powerful expressions of love.
TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions.

SAFEGUARD ROOFS AGAINST SNOW DAMAGE
The sight of falling snow also may inspire some homeowners to think about the roofs of their homes. The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety warns that it is important to understand the risk of roof collapse due to the weight of snow on the roof. Roof structures that are in good condition can support roughly 20 pounds per square foot. IIBHS says this equates to around four feet of new snow before a roof will become stressed. Total snowfall is not the only factor to consider. Homeowners also must check the type of snow that has fallen. According to House Logic, six inches of wet snow is equal to the weight of about 38 inches of dry snow. That means it may take much less sodden snow to weigh down a roof.
ENJOY VALENTINE’S DAY WHEN THE BABYSITTER’S BUSY Meet for lunch If you can’t spare a day off from work, make a point to meet for lunch at a place halfway between your offices. This is yet another kid-free opportunity to enjoy meaningful conversation and time spent as a couple.
Do home improvement projects now, before winter The to-do chores never seem to go away, which can make you want to leave the projects for another season. After all, the deck is going to be covered by snow all winter and the house can always be repainted in the spring. But taking care of these jobs now has benefits beyond just crossing them off of your to-do list. For homeowners in areas of the country that have harsh winter weather, refinishing the deck this fall will help protect it from the winter elements like sleet, snow and ice. For those who live in milder climates, refinishing the deck now means you’ll still get to enjoy the fruits of your labor into the cooler months - and get a jump on spring chores. In addition, having your deck and your house in the best condition going into the rough winter months means that you’ll minimize any damage that could be caused by harsh weather conditions. To get the maximum benefits out of your efforts, take the time to make any necessary repairs to your deck or siding before you start painting. This could include patching any imperfections in your siding and sanding away peeling paint. On the deck, replace warped boards and nail down loose ones. A good cleaning ensures that the surface is ready for stain or paint. Once you’re ready to paint, make sure you have the right tools for the job. It will make the task quicker and easier, and provide more professional-looking results. Paint brushes and rollers have their place as useful tools, but for making quick work of painting a house or finishing a deck, nothing beats a power paint sprayer. The beauty of outdoor painting is that a paint sprayer can be used to get the job done in a few easy strokes.

Roof condition and the shape of the roof bear consideration as well. Popular Mechanics says the ideal pitched roof is smooth and steep so that the snow slides off. Closely spaced rafters improve the strength of the roof. A flat or slightly pitched roof may accumulate snow more readily. Homeowners are urged to inspect roof rafters to see if they are cracked from previous snowstorms or damaged from insects or rot. Snapping or popping sounds while snow is on the roof is not a good sign. House Logic also says that homeowners can tell if the snow load on the roof is too much by paying attention to interior doors. If such doors begin to stick, that may be a signal that there’s enough weight on the center of the house to distort the door frames. Houses that had improper renovations or homes in which load-bearing walls were removed may be more susceptible to this problem. Removing snow from a roof is not an easy job - and may be a task best left to professionals. The safest way to remove snow from the roof is to use a snow rake with an extension arm that enables users to push and pull off the snow while standing on the ground. One should not climb onto a snowy or icy roof to remove snow. Shovels, which can damage roof shingles, should never be used. IIBHS says that hiring a professional roof contractor is one way to safely remove snow from the roof. Licensed and insured contractors will have the experience to get the job done correctly and safely. Homeowners can expect to pay between $250 and $500 for this job. Roof snow removal is a priority for those who live in mountainous or extremely snowy areas. If unsafe amounts of snow are left on rooftops, leaks, damage and collapse may result.

Snow may delight young children itching for a day off from school. But for many homeowners, the sight of snow means their time will soon be spent clearing paths and plowing driveways rather than building snowmen and sledding with friends.

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs. Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot. Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.

Nothing can be more frustrating than wanting to begin a project only to spend precious time looking for tools. Almost as important as the investment in tools is the investment in tool storage. Hardwood or metal tool chests feature various drawers and cabinets that can house tools of different sizes. By keeping tools in a chest, they’re easy to find and more likely to stay sharp and in good condition. Metal tools should be stored in a cool, dry area, as dust and moisture can cause rusting issues on metal tools. One way to alleviate rust is to spray metal tools with a product like WD-40 to serve as a moisture barrier, then store them in closed drawers or containers. All tools do not necessarily have to be stored in a garage or work shed. Many homeowners like to keep smaller tools in the house so that frequently used items are within reach. A hammer, wrench, pliers, and a few screwdrivers are handy tools to have around inside the house.

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. HOW TO FIND A HOBBY Commitments to work and family can make adults feel like they have little time for much else. But finding time to pursue hobbies can benefit men and women in various ways. A form of escapism that can provide a much-needed respite from the hectic pace of daily life, hobbies can help men and women reduce stress by forcing them to focus on something other than the source of their stress. In addition, hobbies can be a great way to meet new people, an important benefit for working parents who may otherwise find it difficult to meet new people. Finding a hobby may take some trial and error, as adults may find activities that once appealed to them no longer do, while other pursuits may require more time than men and women can reasonably devote. Adults looking for a hobby can consider the following strategies as they begin their pursuits. Think back to childhood. A childhood passion may provide the perfect starting point as adults look for hobbies. For example, adults who enjoyed painting as children may find they still know their way around a canvas and palette. Ask around. Adults who want to find a hobby to foster social connections can ask friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to recommend activities. This can help men and women make connections in their communities and/or reconnect with friends or family members with whom they have fallen out of touch. Think small. Because there is often some trial and error in finding a rewarding hobby, it makes sense to avoid making too big a commitment right off the bat. Before buying lots of expensive equipment or materials or making a large time commitment, give yourself some time to try a hobby on for size. The first activity you try might not necessarily take, and walking away won’t sting as much if you had not committed much time or money. Consider coaching or mentoring. Athletes who still have a passion for their favorite sports but can no longer meet the physical demands such sports require can stay involved by coaching youth sports. The same can be said for professionals passionate about their work who choose to mentor. These activities might not be traditional hobbies, but they offer a great way for adults to pursue their passions on their own time. Hobbies can enrich our lives and provide respites from the daily grind.
