Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community—from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.

A LASTING TRIBUTE TO AMERICAN SOLDIERS (NAPSI)—More than 30 million Americans have served in the United States Army. If you or someone you care about is among them, you can now order a personalized, commemorative brick that will be permanently placed along the pathway to the future National Museum of the United States Army. Making a Museum The National Army Museum is rapidly taking shape at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, just south of Washington, D.C. This national landmark will be the first museum to tell the entire history of the nation’s oldest and largest military service. The massive 185,000-square-foot building will display a collection of Army artifacts, historic documents, and Soldier artwork. The vast majority of these priceless selections have never been seen by the public. “For those who served, the Museum will provide a place of reflection,” said retired Army Chief of Staff, General Gordon R. Sullivan, chairman of the Army Historical Foundation. “For the rest of America, it will be an educational institution that conveys American history through the eyes and stories of Soldiers, teaching our nation how the U.S. Army has shaped nearly every major event in our country’s history.” In the two years since groundbreaking, the building’s frame has been completed, and crews have installed the stainless-steel panels that make up its exterior. Inside, the circular walls of the 300-degree Army Theater are set, and four of the Museum’s largest artifacts are in place. The Foundation developed the Commemorative Brick Program to raise funds for construction and offer serving Soldiers and Army veterans and their families a way to forever be part of the historic national landmark. Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Celebrating Irish Heritage for Over 40 Years! By Amanda Dudek

n St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, almost everyone is a little more Irish, at least in spirit. Bringing some Irish luck to the Greater Rochester area is the popular, family-friendly Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This parade is one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in New York State, second only to the one in NYC. It is the single largest one-day event in the City of Rochester. The parade’s history is rich, and Tops’ relationship with it begins over Irish soda bread and friendship. Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade President, Chris Shalvoy, shared with us the history of the parade. “Rochester’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is celebrating its 43rd year, but the parade has been going on for a lot longer,” he said. “We have traced the parade back to the 1850’s when many people were emigrating from Ireland due to famine and political and religious oppression, and the Irish were often shunned.” Over time, however, the parade became a mainstream event. “In Ireland, it is a day for religious observance. In the United States, the parade took on a much bigger role as Irish immigrants celebrated their newfound freedom to openly practice their Catholic faith and Irish traditions without fear,” Shalvoy explained. Today, the Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade often draws as many as 60,000 guests when the weather is inclement but has drawn over 120,000 when it’s fair. Shamrock luck certainly must have been involved when Tops became the parade’s headline sponsor years ago. “Dave and Cindy Hook, both of whom work for Tops, moved back to the small community I grew up in and still live in today,” Shalvoy began. “My son mentioned the last name (Hook) of a new boy in his class, and I thought his father must be related to a family I knew growing up.” Dave Hook did grow up with Shalvoy and even had Shalvoy’s mother as his English teacher. Shalvoy’s wife, Gayle, belonged to the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, an Irish Catholic organization, as its president, which she still is today. They raised funds selling Irish soda bread. When they lost their provider, the Hooks suggested that Tops could help. Tops agreed, and the organization sold this bread at the Rochester Irish Festival that year. At that time, Chris Shalvoy was on the festival’s board and on the parade’s board.

“Tops enjoyed the Rochester Irish Festival very much,” shared Shalvoy. “When our parade lost its primary sponsor, Tops graciously stepped in as its headline sponsor.” Shalvoy described Tops as continuing to be a wonderful partner, explaining that working with them is a privilege. “Tops is very particular when selecting partners,” he explained. “The company is very familyoriented. They feel this parade is somewhere they can showcase their product without having to worry about being embarrassed.” A representative from Tops has faithfully attended the parade’s monthly meetings, and Tops has provided parade advertising, food and beverages for the workers and “really gone all out,” according to Shavoy. “It is a wonderful partnership,” he added. One of the parade’s most well-known precursors, the Irish Night Amerks game, is held the Friday night before the parade. The Amerks wear Irish-themed jerseys which are later auctioned off. Funds raised by the event and auction benefit the St. Patrick’s Day Committee, supporting the privately funded parade.

“The Amerks are a tremendous sponsor of the parade, and their Irish Night hockey game is something many people look forward to,” said Shalvoy. “If we play an American team, we sing the Irish National Anthem in Gaelic. That means a lot to me.” This year, Don Stevens, the announcer for the Amerks, is the parade’s Sportsperson of the Year, as well. Medal of Honor recipient and Batavia Veteran, David Bellavia, will be the parade’s Grand Marshal, and 96-year-old Veteran, Peter DuPre will be its Honorary Marshal. Other honorees include Marianne Tucker, Compeer, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Mike McKeon and Patrick Michael Murphy. Honorees in memoriam include Eamon McCormack, Helen Doherty, Bill Kehoe, Jo Carroll and Joe Dady. The parade will feature over 3,000 marchers and 100 entries, including 15 marching bands and 7 Irish dance schools. The Celtic Family Faire will also be at the parade from 11am-4pm at the nearby Hilton Garden Inn on East Main Street and will offer such highlights as In Jest (comedy), a photo booth, games, Irish storytelling, cupcake decorating and hot cocoa all for the price of a donation to Daystar Kids. “The parade is like a Barnum and Bailey Circus that walks right down the street,” Shalvoy stated. “Smiling little kids all have shamrocks on their heads; it doesn’t matter who they are or where they’re from. For those 2-3 hours, the parade brings joy to them, and they get that escape.” The Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 12:30pm. GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED • Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place. • Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. instance you described, you are wrong. You have no “right” to move into the oncoming lane of traffic as long as there are vehicles in that lane. No matter what, you do not have that right. Other drivers are not required to move over for you just because you have something blocking your lane. I am positive that any judge would tell you the same. As for the police, they never pass in the opposite lane unless they have their lights on indicating an emergency, in which case the law says drivers are required to move to the shoulder to let them pass. You are not the police. You do not have that right to require drivers to move over.

On Friday, February 28th, I was at the Crosby’s gas station in Brockport. I was trying to purchase a gas gift card for my grandson. When I was told that they do not accept Credit Cards or Checks, I was extremely upset because I didn’t have enough cash and I had traveled a distance to get the card. I wasn’t sure what

round hay bale, much enjoyed! I called local jewelers because a stone in my ring was loose. Lambert Jewelers gave the lowest quote. I went in the next day and received fantastic customer service and was amazed when they fixed my ring on the spot. I asked how much I owed and was shocked when he said not to worry about it since it took two minutes to fix. I definitely will be recommending them to friends and family. Thank you!

I really agree with getting rid of plastic bags. What I don’t understand is why grocery stores do not train their employees on how to pack the reusable bags. On five separate trips to the store to do my shopping, I have had to ask the cashier to please keep my meat separate from my cleaning products. Is this not common sense? I have come home with my frozen foods on top of my sliced bread and ice cream with my bar soap. Also, why am I given such a hard time when I ask for a freezer bag for certain items? I spend a lot of money every week on food and firmly believe I keep my grocery store in business. Please train your employees to pack grocery bags!
