Crossword puzzles are word games in which the answers correspond to numbered clues. The words are put into a grid of horizontal and vertical squares to form completed, intersecting words. When all of the words are supplied correctly, the puzzle is complete. In North America and Great Britain, crossword grids traditionally have 180-degree rotational symmetry. The diagram, or placement of black squares within the grid, must be symmetric diagonally. This means that the pattern of the puzzle will appear the same if the puzzle is turned upside down. American crossword puzzles conform to a set of established rules made popular by publisher Simon & Schuster, the original crossword puzzle publisher. The standard puzzle grid size is 15x15. However, 17x17, 19x19 and 21x21 also are used. Smaller 13x13 also are accepted. Many crossword puzzles do not use two-letter words, and three-letter words are kept to a minimum. In addition, every letter square must be part of both an Across and a Down word. Crossword rules are different in other parts of the world. For example, in Japan, the corner squares of a crossword puzzle must be white. Despite once publishing a statement describing crosswords as a “sinful waste in the utterly futile finding of words the letters of which will fit into a prearranged pattern” in 1924, The New York Times routinely produces what many consider to be the world’s most challenging crossword puzzles. Stanley Newman is credited with completing a New York Times crossword faster than anyone in history. In 1996, Newman completed a crossword in two minutes, 14 seconds. Crossword puzzles appear in newspapers, magazines and kids’ activity books and are even used in school lessons to supplement vocabulary lessons. Doing these puzzles also may be good for one’s health. According to a University of California at Berkeley study, crossword puzzles may help in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers found that the more often someone engaged in mentally stimulating activities such as crosswords, the less buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, which are hallmarks of the disease. Doing crossword puzzles also may offer a distraction that helps people reduce stress. Crossword puzzles have a storied history. They are completed recreationally and in competitions, and cruciverbalists look forward to new puzzles in their newspapers every week.

Dreaming of America By Marlene Caroselli
D
reams represent a significant thread in the tapestry that is America. We have dream teams of lawyers and Olympic basketball players. Musically, we have songsters engaged in “California Dreaming” and those who request that lovers “Dream a Little Dream of Me.” Cinematically, we watched Elvis Follow That Dream. Native Americans weave dream catchers and a beloved oftquoted orator told us, “I have a dream.” Television viewers in the 80’s watched an astronaut “Dream of Jeannie,” and parents today continue to offer nocturnal wishes for sweet dreams. Therapists want to explore our dreams and Google meanderers who want to explore the word “dream” will find billions of entries as they search.
Starlight Creations carries work by many local artists! Views on Dreams It seems all kinds of Americans have thoughts to share on this popular topic. Muhammad Ali warned his opponents, “If you even dream of beating me, you’d better wake up and apologize.” We Americans are encouraged by affirmations like Walt Disney’s: “If you can dream it, you can do it.” We remember JFK’s Inaugural Address when he quoted George Bernard Shaw’s assertion, “I dream things that never were; and I say, ‘Why not?’” Mike Pence acknowledges, “I grew up with a front row seat to the American dream.” Even Olympian Michael Phelps assures us “the more you dream, the farther you get.” The American Dreamette The noun suffix “ette” suggests a diminutive form. So, the “major” has a “majorette,” and a small “novel” is known as a “novelette.” The “cigar” has its diminutive, too: “cigarette.” Small “kitchens” are “kitchenettes” and small “diners,” “dinettes.” Then there’s the “baguette,” coming from the Latin word for a “stick,” and the “pipette,” a smaller “pipe.” Not surprisingly, the generic, Local author, macrocosmic American Dream has its Marlene Caroselli personalized, microcosmic “dreamette.” This is a smaller, less abstract, more individualized version of the great American Dream. It is one person’s view of the hopes America can make real. I’ve seen evidence of the “dreamette.” My parents have shown me photographs of Italian immigrants who wanted to assure their families left behind that they are succeeding in America. They posed for photographs in their best outfits, of course, with their hands on the back of a chair. Draped on the chair were additional ties and gloves and pairs of shoes – all proof of the possessions they now owned: real symbols of their achievements in this new land. There are millions of stories of immigrants who have left poverty or persecution behind and sought a better life in America. Sylvia

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 30, 1867, U.S. Secretary of State William Seward signs a treaty with Russia to buy Alaska for $7 million. Despite the bargain price of roughly 2 cents an acre, the Alaskan purchase was ridiculed as "Seward's Folly" and "Seward's icebox." On March 31, 1889, the Eiffel Tower is dedicated in Paris in a ceremony presided over by Gustave Eiffel, its designer, and French Prime Minister Pierre Tirard. At 984 feet, the Eiffel Tower remained the world's tallest man-made structure until the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930.
Healthy eating options for seniors “Let food be thy medicine” is a quote attributed to Hippocrates, the ancient scholar considered to be the father of modern medicine. The saying relates to the notion that what people put in their bodies can heal and/or prevent certain conditions. For seniors with medicine cabinets full of over-the-counter and prescription medications, the idea of relying predominantly on food to promote optimal health may be tempting, and various foods can be particularly useful to the 50-and-over demographic. According to the World Health Organization, poor diet is a major contributor to many of the diseases that affect older people. Poor diet has been connected to the development of diabetes, and degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis also may be linked to the foods ones eat. The National Council for Aging Care says micronutrient deficiency is often a problem among the aging due to factors like lack of variety in diet and reduced food intake. Eating a variety of foods can provide all of the nutrients people need to stay healthy as they get older. Certain foods may be particularly helpful.
On April 1, 1970, President Richard Nixon signs legislation officially banning cigarette ads on television and radio. Nixon, who was an avid pipe smoker, supported the legislation at the increasing insistence of public health advocates.
· Brain-friendly foods: Foods such as avocado, leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, blueberries, and salmon are good sources of vitamin E, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients that may help ward off dementias like Alzheimer’s disease, advises Sonas Home Health Care. · Anti-inflammatory foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent inflammation that can cause cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more. Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. These recommendations involve using common household products to sanitize homes, offices and public spaces. As people take such precautions, many are stocking up on extra essentials — resulting in shortages.
The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because they have an envelope around them that enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice. Hot water and soap The reason hand-washing is at the top of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease. Hydrogen peroxide As people clear isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective at combatting that virus as well. Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemically-based cleansers for other home tasks.

The Foundation developed the Commemorative Brick Program to raise funds for construction and offer serving Soldiers and Army veterans and their families a way to forever be part of the historic national landmark. On Monday, the 9th of March, my family and I went to Krony’s. We always enjoy the delicious pizza and what I call calzones. Of course, what would Krony’s be without Joey. He simply is the best manager I have ever seen in a restaurant. Joey is just a great all-around person. He goes out of his way to make sure that everything is great. He is always so personable no matter how busy he may
My child is not perfect; no child is. However, when another child threatens to physically assault my child, that is one thing. If you follow through, there will be legal consequences. I will call the police on your child. This is not the 1980’s. Physical assault is a big deal, and if you, as a parent, allow your child to conduct themselves this way, then maybe you need to be investigated as well. That inherited trait shines very brightly through your child. Too bad. Last month, I went into the grocery store, and while looking around, I saw a little one in her daddy’s arms. I noticed she had on a real cute dress with a matching hair band. I stopped to say ‘hi’ and left. As I was returning my cart mom, dad (each wearing coats) and their child were also leaving. To my shock, the toddler was still wearing only the light little dress with absolutely nothing else on her, no coat, blanket, etc. If they thought

I asked her to stop, but she told me that the kind man behind me was paying for my goods. I insisted on repaying him, but he said that it was his way of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify. Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits. Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment. For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working. “It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.” It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.” Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts. “I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back!
