GENERAL CONTRACTING

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Change is still dominant for Rams and Ewes, both in the workplace and their private lives. This is also a good time to look at a possible relocation if that has been one of your goals. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Doing things for others is what you do well. But don’t forget that Bovines thrive on the arts, so make some time for yourself to indulge your passion for music and artistic expressions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) While the Romantic Twin considers where to go for his or her upcoming vacation, the Practical Twin will start making travel plans now to take advantage of some great bargains. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your sensitive nature helps you deal with a difficult emotional situation. Be patient and continue to show your sincere support wherever (and for whomever) it is needed. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re making progress as you move through some unfamiliar territory. And while there might be a misstep or two along the way, overall you’re heading in the right direction. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some good news arrives -- and just in time to remind you that you’re making progress. Perhaps things aren’t moving as quickly as you’d prefer, but they’re moving nevertheless. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) This is a good week to step back and assess the facts that have recently emerged to see where they can be used to your advantage. Also, don’t hesitate to make changes where necessary. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You should begin to experience some support from those who now agree with your point of view. This should help counter the remaining objections from die-hard skeptics. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t let your aim be deflected by trivial matters as you try to resolve a confusing situation. Take time to find and thoroughly assess the facts before making any decision. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The possibility of moving to another location has come up. But before you dismiss it as unworkable, it’s worth checking out just in case it does have some merit after all. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) New relationships -- personal or work-related -show mixed signals. Best to assume nothing. Let things play themselves out until you have something substantive to work with. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your ability to make needed changes without causing too much, if any, negative ripple effect comes in handy when dealing with a sensitive matter either on the job or in the family. BORN THIS WEEK: Although you like things to go smoothly, you’re not shy about making waves when you believe the situation calls for it. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

LAWNS BENEFIT FROM AERATION Compacted soil can have a dramatic effect on grass. Compacted soil blocks oxygen, water and nutrients from reaching the root systems of the turf. That creates a lawn with weak roots, which make grass more vulnerable to disease and compromising its ability to withstand harsh weather, such as summer heat. The buildup of thatch, which is a matted layer of grass clippings and other organic debris that collects on the top of the soil, is one indicator that a lawn could benefit from aeration, a process in which the surface of the lawn is perforated to break up compacted soil and allow oxygen, water and nutrients to reach root systems. Other signs that aeration may be necessary include patches of thin grass, brown spots and a high concentration of clay in the soil. Aerators can be operated manually, though professionals tend to use motorized aerators. The machines are often heavy, so homeowners should consider their health and physical ability before deciding to aerate on their own. Hiring a professional landscaper who has experience aerating may the quickest and most effective way to restore a lawn to full health. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

David Rearson, Firefighter of the Egypt Fire Department for 55 Years By Randal Simonetti

A

s the 75th anniversary of the Egypt Fire Department approaches, perhaps no other member of the department has more active firefighting and department leadership experience than David Rearson as he celebrates 55 years of serving the Perinton area as an active volunteer firefighter. During his tenure in the department, David has held the rank of Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief and Chief, holding the top leadership role from 1975 until 1977 and ag again from 2015 to 2016. David was born in Macedon, New York on Sunday, January 31, 1943 during a furious snow storm. The weather was so bad the doctor had to deliver David at home. He recalls, “I later learned that my mom was upset that she had to miss church that Sunday morning. However, my two older sisters were thrilled I had arrived so they could take a break from the regular Sunday routine.”

David started school a year early so he would remain the youngest member of his class right through high school. He started his education in a one-room school house which still stands today on the corner of Wilson Road and Route 31. When his family moved to Fairport in 1949, he attended a two-room school house located on Turk Hill Road which also still stands today. David was inspired by several of his teachers. He remembers learning Algebra unlocked the world of measuring things including recipes and building projects. “My English teacher taught me the challenges of a dangling participle which I can honestly say I have never used from that day forward. I also appreciated my business teacher who helped prepare us for the future by teaching us to dress for success and demonstrate humility when participating in a job interview.” As a student at Fairport High School, he excelled in soccer, playing every minute of every game for all four high school seasons. At 17, David, too young to join on his own, convinced his mother to sign his application for the United States Air Force. He celebrated his 18th birthday in basic training at Lakeland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. He does not recommend this to others as he missed out on a real birthday cake that year. He remembers viewing the opening of the movie, The Alamo while living in San Antonio only several miles from the actual Alamo. He completed his technical training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and was permanently assigned to Luke AFB in Glendale, Arizona where he specialized in combat water treatment as a member of the engineering group.

against each other in department softball, golf and bowling teams, giving firefighters a chance to really get to know each other. They also had many dinner celebrations where spouses could enjoy the traditions and camaraderie. David’s most frightening moments came in 1976 while fighting a barn fire on a potato farm. The concrete floor collapsed under David and a dozen other firefighters, falling on top of two firefighters below. The two firefighters on the lower David married high school sweetheart, level were saved because Margaret Buholtz they were standing in a reinforced potato bunker on the edge of the structure while the collapsing concrete formed a slide, keeping David and his team from being trapped underneath the rubble. David explained, “We scampered up that broken concrete like mice running from a flood.” His most traumatic moment came as Deputy Chief. He arrived on the scene of a two-car motor vehicle accident at which there were five fatalities. “I remember getting there within two minutes of the crash and saying to myself, these people can’t be dead, they’re still warm. Nothing ever prepares you for that kind of experience. Many of us took a long time to get over it.” During David’s tenure at the Egypt Fire Department, he has watched the organization grow from just five fire vehicles to seven trucks, three emergency squad cars and a new fire police truck. Today, David and Margaret take great pleasure watching their five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren grow. In addition, they enjoy skiing, golf and biking. David shares, “It is a real honor and privilege to serve with my colleagues at the Egypt Fire House. I look forward to celebrating many more years serving the Perinton community.” This is the first in a series of articles submitted by Randal Simonetti, EFD Director of Public Affairs, recognizing the courage and commitment of the volunteer fighterfighters of the Egypt Fire Department as the organization prepares for its 75th anniversary. He can be reached at ras@ignitionltd.com or at 585-738-8333.

Five months before he completed his service, he married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Buholtz. They moved back to the area in 1964 and had two children, daughter Deborah who now works locally in the healthcare field and son Darryl who works in the IT Department of Johnson & Johnson in Philadelphia.

Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com:

David’s Air Force experience served him well as he took his first job in East Rochester working in the waste water treatment industry. He would later join the Monroe County Water Authority, working his way up to Plant Manager when he retired in 1998.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

chronic myelogenous leukemia, Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. I am 5 feet, 11 inches and weigh 240 pounds. I have two stents and take Sprycel for the CML. My levels are good, and the coronary disease is under control. For a few years I’ve had what feels like “cotton balls” under the skin in the area of the balls of my feet. Now it feels like it’s migrating to the arch. While not too uncomfortable, it is almost impossible to walk barefooted. Some type of foot covering is needed to keep from noticing the feeling. My doctor says it’s the diabetes, and to lose weight or see a podiatrist. Other than losing the weight, do you have any opinion about this? -- N.M. ANSWER: Cotton-ball sensation is one way that many people describe the beginning of neuropathy, a general term for a variety of different conditions that affect the nerves of the body. In a person with cancer (like CML, chronic myelogenous leukemia, a cancer of the bone marrow) and a new symptom, it is always wise to consider whether it could be due to the cancer, the treatment for the cancer or from something else. In your case, usually CML is not associated with neuropathy. However, the medicine you are taking, dasatinib (Sprycel), has been associated with a severe kind of reversible neuropathy. I read the case reports of this condition carefully, and I doubt that is what is going on with you, as the symptoms you have are different from those reported. People with longstanding diabetes frequently develop a particular disease of the nerves, diabetic neuropathy. This almost always begins with sensation changes in the feet. I agree with your doctor that diabetes is the most likely cause. Seeing a podiatrist is absolutely a good idea. He or she can test you for this condition (usually a careful physical exam will make the diagnosis), in addition to looking carefully for any early signs or risk factors for injury or infection. You also should learn how to do a daily inspection of your feet and recognize the signs, so you can get to medical attention promptly should any damage to your feet occur. The podiatrist will make sure you have appropriate footwear. Many people with diabetes benefit from weight loss, but the important thing is to be sure your diabetes is under good control. This is achieved through good diet, regular exercise and medication, if needed, in addition to weight loss in people who are overweight.

about seven years ago. My PSA reading has increased since 2012 from 0.09 to 0.304. Should I be concerned? I am 78 years old and in relatively good health. -- B.D. ANSWER: PSA readings can go up and down, but a threefold increase could mean that the cancer is coming back, and you should see the specialist taking care of your prostate cancer to discuss getting additional testing. Not having disease for seven years after treatment is a good sign, but the PSA test is pretty specific for cancer recurrence if two separate readings are above 0.2. You may need additional therapy, but only further investigation will show how concerned you need to be. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Manage Your Blood Pressure And Protect Your Kidneys (NAPSI) - Did you know if

you have high blood pressure you are at increased risk for chronic kidney disease? High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is the second leading cause of chronic kidney disease in the United States. About 1 in 5 adults with high blood pressure may have chronic kidney disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels. If your blood pressure gets too high, the blood vessels in your body‚ including those in your kidneys‚ may become damaged. This damage makes it harder for the kidneys to filter blood and remove wastes and extra water from the body. Kidney disease can get worse over time, and if not treated it can lead to kidney failure. And while high blood pressure can lead to kidney disease, the reverse is also true: kidney disease can lead to high blood pressure. Simple tests can tell you whether you have high blood pressure or kidney disease. Ask your health care professional if you have been tested for high blood pressure and kidney disease. Many people with kidney disease don’t know they have the disease until their kidneys begin to fail. Research suggests that fewer than 1 in 10 people who have kidney disease are aware they have the disease. This is because kidney disease often doesn’t have any symptoms early on. The good news is that you can help protect your kidneys by managing high blood pressure with healthy lifestyle habits.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 5, 1977, the Dial-a-President radio program, featuring President Jimmy Carter, airs for the first time. Carter answered calls from all over the country from his desk in the Oval Office. Approximately 9 million calls flooded the CBS radio studio during the two-hour broadcast. On March 6, 1899, the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin registers Aspirin, the brand name for acetylsalicylic acid, on behalf of the German pharmaceutical company Friedrich Bayer & Co. In its primitive form, the active ingredient, salicin, was used for centuries in folk medicine. On March 7, 1876, 29-year-old Alexander Graham Bell receives a patent for his revolutionary new invention -- the telephone. Bell’s patent filing beat a similar claim by Elisha Gray by only two hours.

“Our research continues to uncover the complexities of the link between high blood pressure and kidney disease,” says Griffin P. Rodgers, MD, director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). “And what we are finding supports the message that you can help protect your kidneys by managing high blood pressure with healthy lifestyle habits.” Adopting healthy lifestyle habits that help you manage your blood pressure will also help to keep your kidneys healthy. You can prevent or slow kidney disease progression by taking the following steps to lower your blood pressure: Take medicines as prescribed. Blood pressure medicines often play a key role in lowering blood pressure. Aim for a healthy weight. If you are overweight or have obesity, reducing your weight may lower high blood pressure. Select healthier food and beverage options. Follow a healthy eating plan that focuses on heart-healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats that are low in sodium. Stop smoking. Smoking damages blood vessels, increases your risk for high blood pressure, and worsens problems related to high blood pressure. For help quitting, call 1-800-QUITNOW or go to Smokefree.gov. Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can have an adverse effect on your blood pressure and metabolism. Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Manage stress and make physical activity part of your routine. Healthy stress-reducing activities and regular physical activity can lower blood pressure. Try to get at least 30 minutes or more of physical activity each day. “You can manage your blood pressure and its complications through healthy lifestyle habits, which include exercise, following a healthy eating plan and taking blood pressure medication as prescribed by your doctor,” says Gary H. Gibbons, MD, director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). “It’s important to know your numbers because controlling or lowering your blood pressure can prevent or delay serious complications like kidney disease and heart disease.” For more information, visit the NIDDK website at www.niddk.nih.gov. SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE (NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up. What You Can Do 1. Spend time with your children.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Make an effort to reduce stress. Stress produces a host of negative side effects, some of which can indirectly affect appearance. Some people dealing with stress end up suffering from insomnia, which can contribute to bags under the eyes. Stress also can adversely affect hydration of the skin, contributing to dry skin. Stress also can contribute to hormonal imbalances that lead to skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. If stress is a problem, make a concerted effort to reduce it, even working with a physician to reduce stress when necessary.

2. Be a positive role model. 3. Send a text to stay connected when far away. 4. Read to your children. 5. Remember #DadJokesRule! There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2 What Dads are Already Doing Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved: • 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3

• 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4 • 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5 • Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6 • Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7 Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8 To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign. “All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated. The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. Police go around vehicles, also. Do you complain about them too? With so many cars on the roads you must be more flexible and understanding. Uber may be a better alternative for you.

Yeah, we know you have the right of way. My question is, would you purposely cause an accident because you have that right of away? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

INVASIVE PESTS GO POSTAL: HOW TO KEEP THEM OUT OF THE MAIL (NAPSI)—If you’re not careful, an innocent trip to the post office could have a devastating impact on U.S. agriculture, economy and natural resources. That’s because invasive pests can easily hide in fruits and vegetables and on plants, then quickly spread to new areas when sent through the mail. Introducing even one pest to a new place is dangerous. For example, if you mail a single mango infested with fruit fly larvae to a friend, and he/ she throws it into a garbage or compost pile, it could lead to a new fruit fly outbreak that could cost the United States millions of dollars. Before mailing that package of fruits, vegetables, seeds, plants, soils or plant-based handicrafts, remember these tips to keep invasive pests from spreading:

1 4 7 12 13 14 15 16 18 19 20 22 23 27 29

• Check if you’re in a location that restricts the movement of the agricultural item you plan to ship. You may be in an area that is under federal or state quarantine for an invasive pest. Go to the “Pest Tracker” at HungryPests.com to see quarantine areas.

31 34

• Hawaii and Puerto Rico have their own restrictions on what can be mailed to the U.S. mainland. Visit “Traveler Information” at the USDA’s website.

37 38

• Before you ship or receive such items from foreign countries (including packages from family and friends), contact your USDA office to see if it’s eligible for entry (even if you’ve shipped or received it before). You could face a fine if you send prohibited items through the mail.

35

39 41 45 47

• Expecting a package through an online purchase? Don’t assume items from foreign retailers are safe or legal to import. Shippers may not be aware of U.S. regulations regarding restricted items or care about your liability as the importer. Visit “Imports” at the USDA’s website.

48

• If an item is seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, make sure it’s not sent again. If you purchased it from a foreign vendor, ask for your money back and don’t accept the vendor’s offer to replace the confiscated item.

52 53 54

Mailing agricultural products is not the same as carrying them with you across an international border or through customs at an international airport, as different procedures may apply. Visit www.aphis.usda.gov/ travel to learn more. We each play an important role in keeping our packages pest-free. Whether you’re mailing agricultural items to others or having them shipped on your behalf, take care to follow these reminders, so invasive species don’t spread. Learn more at www.HungryPests.com. GVPENNYSAVER.COM TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.”

Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools.

A strong professional network can help professionals advance their careers and help others looking to do the same.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.
