AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

That God once loved a garden we learn in Holy writ. And seeing gardens in the Spring I well can credit it. ~ Winifred Mary Letts

DID YOU KNOW? Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Don’t be put off by a seemingly too-tangled situation. Sometimes a simple procedure will unsnarl all the knots and get you in the clear fast and easy, just the way the Lamb likes it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time to go through your work space -- wherever it is -- and see what needs to be replaced and what can be tossed (or at least given away) without a second thought. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Someone who disagrees with your position might try to intimidate you. But continue to present a fair argument, regardless of how petty someone else might be while trying to make a point. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might find yourself exceptionally sensitive to family matters this week. An issue could come to light that you had overlooked. Ask other kinfolk to discuss it with you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might have more questions about a project (or perhaps someone you’re dealing with on some level) than you feel comfortable with. If so, see which can be answered, which cannot, and why. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to clean up and clear out what you don’t need before your tidy self is overwhelmed by “stuff.” Then go celebrate the Virgo victory over clutter with someone special. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might feel a mite confused about why something you were sure couldn’t go wrong didn’t go all right either. Be patient. Things soon move into balance, exactly as you like it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) At this decision point, you could be moving from side to side, just to say you’re in motion. Or you could be considering making a move straight up. What you choose is up to you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although your finances should be in an improved situation at this time, thrift is still the savvy Sagittarian’s smart move. Advice from a spouse or partner could be worth heeding. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Taking on a new challenge brings out the Goat’s skills in maneuvering over and around difficult spots. Best of all, the Goat does it one careful step after another. (Got the idea, Kid?) AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your well-known patience might be wearing thin because of a disturbing (and seemingly unending) problem with someone close to you. This could be a time to ask for help. Good luck. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be careful about a new venture that lures you into a “just look and see” mode. Be sure that what you’re being given to see isn’t hiding what you should be seeing instead. BORN THIS WEEK: Aries and Taurus give you the gift of leadership and the blessings of care and concern for all creatures. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

festivities. Not only does it add for some fun and color, but will remind your child everyone is there to celebrate them on their special day. Have kids pick a theme; whether it’s silly hats or hair, or their craziest mismatched outfit, inspire a spark of creativity and let kids reveal their looks to one another at the start of their call. It’s sure to guarantee some laughs and serve as a talking point and good distraction.

With social distancing in place, gathering a large group together whether at home or in a public setting for a birthday party isn’t necessarily an option. Have no fear though! With the right ingenuity and the aid of video calling software, those much needed social interactions and birthday celebrations are still viable! While bowling or pizza parties may be off-limits for the time being, teleconferencing can allow families to come together even through the screen. Grandma can log on to join in with singing happy birthday and watch your little one blow out candles, and cousins & friends can watch them open presents while sending virtual cards. Not only does this maintain social distancing protocols, but allows for engagement and serves as a reminder that birthdays can still be fun occasions despite everything going on. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Virtual parties can come with their own RSVPs emailed out ahead of time, and consider bringing in any of those DIY crafts you may have been trying out on your own! While your kids may not be able to hang out with their friends in person, they can still get together to do some crafts, tell some jokes, or bring some levity into staying at home. Friends and relatives can read birthday cards aloud and express birthday wishes all from the safety of their own homes.

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Host a virtual karaoke party or girls night-in featuring at-home manicures for teens while they cue up their favorite music and celebrate their birthdays at home but still with friends. Live-streaming a movie together (with the right extensions) can make up for that birthday trip to the theater that got sidelined—plus you can never go wrong with popcorn!

Adults shouldn’t feel left out—hosting a game night or even a couple of hours of conversation through voice call can ease that sense of isolation, and sometimes there’s nothing better than getting the game together to reprise their own rendition of Happy Birthday. Birthday parades with convoys are all the rage right now. Set the stage with a birthday yard sign or banner for the boy or girl of the hour. Call Penny Lane Promotional Products at 585-226-8111 to order yours today!

While our children’s birthdays (and ours!) may be celebrated differently this year, it’s important to highlight how close we all are, no matter the distance between Don’t forget to decorate! Have yourself us. Dig out those party hats and streamers and your guests pull out all their finest and make birthdays memorable ones—for birthday party décor to add to the all the right reasons!

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Husband Starting Radiation Treatment ---

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband is about to start radiation treatment for stage one cancer on his vocal chord. Does radiation negatively affect the immune system the same way chemotherapy does? Should I be looking out for people who don’t vaccinate? -- H.T. ANSWER: Radiation can affect the immune system when it is given to large areas of the body, since the immune system cells are largely sensitive to radiation. Whole-body radiation is rarely used now, except in people planning for bone-marrow transplant. By contrast, localized radiation does not adversely affect the immune system to anywhere near the degree that chemotherapy can, since the bone marrow, where the immune system cells live, is diffuse throughout the large bones of the body. As far as avoiding unvaccinated individuals, people who are unvaccinated and who are healthy do not pose a risk. It is in an outbreak of vaccine-preventable disease (there have been localized outbreaks of measles and mumps in the past year, and there are seasonal outbreaks of influenza) that unvaccinated people are much more likely to be infectious. So anyone with immune system disease (such as chemotherapy or whole-body radiation) should avoid people with potentially infectious illness. Caregivers of people with severe immune disease certainly should be immunized according to current guidelines. Even elderly people whose caregivers are immunized for flu get flu less than those whose caregivers are not.

Caring for you and the community since 2001.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I know women who have had double mastectomies in order to reduce the risk of cancer. It seems extreme, but I guess it depends on the evaluation of risk. Are prophylactic hysterectomies done for similar reasons? It used to be routinely done when a woman had passed her reproductive years. I’m interested in your take on this. Will health insurance cover these types of surgeries, and if not, how expensive are they? -- S.B. ANSWER: Prophylactic mastectomies -- that is, surgery to remove the breasts in order to avert a breast cancer diagnosis -- are a reasonable choice for some women at very high risk of breast cancer, especially those with a family history of breast cancer who have an identifiable genetic predisposition, such as one of the BRCA gene mutations. This decision should be made carefully and in consultation with her doctors, usually an oncologist and a genetic counselor. I have very little experience with this in my own patients, fortunately, but I understand that in the case of women with very high genetic risk, it usually is covered by insurance, if it is the consensus of the treating physicians and the patient that she should proceed. Hysterectomy -- the removal of a uterus -- is not done routinely today the way it was decades ago. They are removed for disease, either benign or malignant. However, the removal of both ovaries and Fallopian tubes, called a bilateral oophorectomy and salpingectomy, is performed in some women at high risk for ovarian cancer. In fact, women with the BRCA mutations may consider both a prophylactic double mastectomy and a prophylactic bilateral oophorectomy and salpingectomy, since BRCA mutations increase risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer (as well as other cancers). The cost of surgery in the United States varies dramatically depending on where it is done, but in general it is very expensive. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. NOW’S THE TIME TO

TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Gaius Julius Caesar arrived in the world on July 13, 100 B.C., but contrary to popular belief, it’s unlikely that the future Roman emperor was born by caesarean section. Although the procedure existed at the time, it was usually fatal to the mother and therefore only performed when a pregnant woman was dead or dying, in an effort to save the child. Caesar’s mother, Aurelia, lived until 54 B.C. -- nearly half a century after her son’s birth. * While the technique of flattening fabrics with hot pieces of metal was introduced in ancient China, the first actual ironing board (then called an ironing table) was not invented until 1858, in New York.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne Future president Herbert Hoover was Stanford’s football team manager -- a decision the school might have questioned when, at the first Stanford-Cal game in 1892, he forgot to bring the ball.

The Butlers: A Family on the Frontlines By Amanda Dudek

W

hen the COVID-19 situation began developing in the United States, Michael and Shanna Butler of Honeoye knew that change was coming to their family. Michael Butler, an ER nurse with Thompson in Canandaigua, is also a flight paramedic and had been activated and sent to Texas about three weeks before greater restrictions were put into place. He made it home to his family just two days before bases were shut down in Texas and New York schools closed. “Things closed around us,” said Shanna Butler. “The hospital heightened awareness and educated their nurses. Our attitude was that we were going to be okay and make it through.” Once the Governor began to make some major changes, things shifted. “They were like, ‘This could be a pandemic,’” recalled Shanna. “Their personal protective equipment (PPE) became more prevalent, and this was becoming very real.” At the beginning of the second week of the shutdown, Michael came home, and the two made a serious decision. “We decided that we were going to close our house down at that time and start protecting at the first responder level,” explained Shanna. “Everyone in the ER was wearing a mask all Michael Butler and son the time. They have a separate ICU for COVID-19 patients, as well.” Changes came for Shanna and Michael and their two children, ages 11 and 10, as well. “My husband’s shoes stay outside our home in a separate tote, and he sanitizes before he gets out of the car,” said Shanna. “He has one pair of sandals he switches into, and he completely disrobes down to his underwear by the door on our hardwood floor. His clothing stays there to be washed, and he showers in a separate shower from the family. Although he is around us, we were no longer able snuggle, hug, sit on laps and things like that.” Although their situation has changed because Michael has recently been activated, Shanna well remembers the past few weeks. “It was very hard for our children,” she shared. “They are used to ‘losing’ Michael to activation, not when he is in the house. When you cannot express affection physically that is very hard for kids. They were nervous and worried for their father’s safety.” She noted it was not unlike having her husband deployed, except now she is filling both the “single” parent and teacher roles. “It has been a challenge being at home,” she acknowledged. Shanna is a TA at Honeoye Central School, the president of its PTA, owner of a local dance studio and very involved with her community. “Schools are planning to roll out new curriculum on April 15th,” she said. “This means teaching brand-new lessons remotely. It is difficult for some of our families to shift to life around a tablet or computer.” As a local business owner, Shanna is facing yet another challenge: creating her own dance studio website. “I have to give content,” she explained. “We have our upcoming dance recital which cannot be delayed too long without running the risk of costumes no longer fitting, scheduling conflicts and other issues.” Shanna, who noted her wonderful landlord helped with April, is feeling torn. “This is tough on everyone,” she explained. “If you

are not working, how do you pay for dance classes, and how do I balance understanding with keeping my doors open? This is a business for me, but I am all about my community. I care about my families.” It is easy to see why. Shanna Butler and daughter “The community support has been incredible for me as a business owner, buying gift certificates to my dance studio,” shared Shanna. “I have also had quite a few people reach out, ask after my kids, offer support, ask how they can help.” “We are all in this together,” said Shanna. “As a PTA, we just launched a project with shirts we created in collaboration with Paul Kelly and PK Creations. They say, ‘Reflect your hope, not your fear. Honeoye Strong.’ These are to help students financially. Our town held a virtual Easter Egg Hunt, and my children and I made signs to show people they are not alone.” Shanna encourages others to reach out to essential workers and families, too. “People need to feel they are not alone,” she said. “They do this because it is their passion. Still, it really helps when someone says, ‘Thank you. I am thinking about you, and I will help you in whatever way I can.’” To fellow moms everywhere, Shanna encouraged, “You got this! Go be with your family and enjoy your kids. No one knows what is going to happen, so don’t try to forecast how things are going to be. Just do the best you can, and live fully in this moment.”

a time when people are looking to assist each other during this unprecedented crisis, this unfeeling, greedy landlord is solely focused on money. The lack of compassion is difficult to comprehend or accept.

In response to the poor bagging rant: I’m a cashier, and while I pride myself in bagging properly, I’m an anomaly. While some mistakes, such as crushing bread or mixing chemicals with food, are inexcusable - I find that most bagging issues stem from the customer rather than the cashier. When using reusable bags, it’s important to think about how you want your bags packed when you’re putting your groceries on the belt. If you want something in

a separate bag, don’t put it with everything else. If you want all your frozen items together, put them together. Put bread and similar items towards the back. If items are thrown haphazardly onto the belt, there’s just not a lot of room or time for your cashier to bag things optimally. On Monday, March 30, the management at (local apartments) in (local town) responded to an executive order from the Governor indicating there are to be no evictions for 90 days because of the coronavirus crisis and related economic turmoil. In a letter to tenants, the management reminded tenants that failure to pay rent is a violation of their lease and will result in eviction proceedings. The tenants are understandably shocked and angered by this heartless response to the Governor’s attempt to help people in their time of need. At

Thank you to the post office workers and truck drivers who are still out delivering during this pandemic. It’s a joy seeing all of the bright rainbows and sidewalk drawings throughout the towns! Brings a smile during this unprecedented time.

Okay, so now that dog owners are doing a better job of bagging their pet’s poop when they take them for a walk, the next step is to then take that bag and throw it in the next available receptacle. I can’t believe that people are now leaving their used poop bags along the trails where they walk. What’s the inference here? Do you think someone else will take care of this for you? Come on, dog owners! If you can muster the energy to take your dog on long walks, you can certainly summon the initiative to take your poop bag with you until you can throw it away properly.

SIMPLE WAYS TO BE MORE CHARITABLE Being charitable is rewarding, not only to those on the receiving end of others’ good deeds but also for those doing the giving. Research conducted by the National Institutes of Health found participants who chose to donate a portion of money they were provided activated pleasure centers in the brain. Doing something positive can be uplifting, and being charitable helps others in need. Quite often people who engage in charitable works find inspiration through their efforts. That’s because working with a nonprofit group can create opportunities to meet new people, socialize and be surrounded with like-minded individuals. It also may help adults serve as role models to youngsters. Children who see their parents or other adults being charitable may be more likely to be philanthropic when they grow up. Every little bit counts when being charitable. Philanthropy doesn’t mean donating thousands of dollars or lots of hours volunteering. The following are some relatively easy ways to incorporate charity into one’s life. • Collect change: Place a coin jar near where you put your keys or wallet when entering the house. Empty loose change into the jar and watch it fill up. Use the collected funds to donate to a charitable group. • Round up: When the grocery store checkout clerk asks if you want to round up your purchase to the nearest dollar for charity, opt in. • Become a leader: Volunteer your time as a scout troop leader, coach a sports team or offer free tutoring for students. You’ll be making an immediate difference in the lives of young people. • Charitable consumption: Buy from companies that are involved with cause-related products. Many products are tied to charitable efforts, with a portion of money going directly to nonprofits. • Throw a party: Host a party with a philanthropic theme. Guests can arrive and make a donation or bring a gift that will go to a charitable cause. • Use your hobby: Participate in charity fundraisers that incorporate some of your favorite hobbies. For those who knit or craft, donate or sell your creations for the good of those in need. Being charitable is easier than one might think, and even the smallest efforts can produce big results.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Summer Dreams Surely our world will be back to normal this summer ... right? Surely we’ll be able to get out of the house without fearing every person who comes near us. We’ll be able to leisurely wander through the grocery store, which will be stocked as it used to be. We’ll stop to talk to friends on the street and sit in coffee shops and chat. We’ll attend church, go to our meetings, stroll through the neighborhood admiring the flowers and take part in our exercise classes. Surely we’ll be able to do those things again, right? Yes. We will. But first we have to get there. To get back to where we used to be, we have to stay healthy now. We need exercise to stay healthy. Even if you can’t go to a class, you can find plenty of them for seniors on YouTube. Look through the offerings and bookmark a few. Rotate through them on a daily basis so you don’t get bored. Go to youtube.com and put “exercises for seniors” in the search box. Some of them are even broken down by age. We need to stay mentally healthy as well, despite the television news. Check the Good News Network online [www.goodnewsnetwork.org] for positive, uplifting stories. You also can put “good news” in your browser search box. It’s been difficult to get grocery store deliveries in a lot of areas because they have little stock. However, if you get delivery of your prescriptions (many pharmacies are providing this service now), call to ask whether they can add a few things to your order. Many drugstores carry soups, crackers, milk, canned fruits and vegetables, bottled water and snacks -- some even carry a limited supply of fresh fruit.

Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial. Pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels. Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors – including those who may be divorced or widowed – feel more secure and happy. Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so. • Reduce pain: A recent study found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.” • Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal not only stimulates physical activity, but it also can give seniors a reason to get up and go, which equates to a feeling of purpose. • Altered focus: Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues and preoccupations about loss or aging. • Increased physical activity: Pets require care, and that interaction can get seniors moving more than if they didn’t have a pet. • Improved health: Ongoing research has found dog owners have lower blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t own a dog. • Stick to routine: Caring for pets helps seniors maintain a routine. Having structure after retirement can be important to ward off risk of depression. Staying on top of feeding, grooming and other pet needs also can help prevent cognitive decline. Pets bring many benefits to their owners’ lives, and they may be the perfect remedy for seniors looking for a friend and purpose.

HOW TO

SUCCEED AT SOCIAL DISTANCING ACCORDING TO YOUR ZODIAC SIGN

Isolation got you down? Here’s some fun suggestions on how you can help “flatten the curve” now! ARIES (MAR 21-APR 19): Now is not the time to discover whether the person you live with is truly “the one” – confinement means you literally have no other options! Instead, why don’t you tune up your relationship with yourself? Enroll for free in the Yale online course The Science of Wellbeing. The grass is always greener where you water it! TAURUS (APR 20-MAY 20): You’re slowly awakening to the fact that your former feelings of independence were just that – feelings. Time to brush up your skill sets – cooking, cleaning, and creative work. Reintegrate productivity into your daily routine with the pomodoro technique and experience the profound happiness of an ordered life. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUN 20): Flamingos don’t breed well in captivity without mirrors to create the impression of a larger group. You’re feeling the same; how can you tell the status of your work reputation if you never leave the house? Get out of your head by taking on new projects that excite you. Take ownership over your own progress – everyone will appreciate it, but most importantly, you won’t care anymore if they do! CANCER (JUN 21-JUL 22): Whether your fears are rational or irrational makes little difference – the real question you want to ask yourself is whether they are actionable. If not, do as the Stoics do and remember it is virtue – not external things – that grounds true happiness.

LEO (JUL 23-AUG 22): Your positive energy is more contagious than ever! What is more, your confinement partners are all on board to help execute your vision. As long as you don’t allow perfectionism to spoil the party, your dreams will become reality sooner than you think. VIRGO (AUG 23-SEP 22): Health is wealth, and your new workout routine is already starting to show dividends. Up the energy while helping your local economy by signing up for streaming classes available through your neighborhood gym or studio! LIBRA (SEP 23-OCT 22): Your creative juices are flowing and they must be released. Is it time to recite original poetry or strum your guitar from the front porch to passers-by? Absolutely! Who doesn’t love being serenaded, especially by someone as charming as you? SCORPIO (OCT 23-NOV 21): Confinement is suiting you just fine this week as you deepen your connection with those whom you might have been taking for granted. Try listening to an audiobook together – Towles’ A Gentleman in Moscow will speak to everyone right now. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22-DEC 21): You realize that the internet has increased our access to everything, but at the cost of replacing direct experience and limiting reality. But is there anywhere else to go now? Pascal said, “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” It will be harder, but also more rewarding, than you think. CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 19): Everyone’s been talking about COVID-19 as the “black swan.” Take charge of the rhetoric by reading Taleb’s 2007 bestseller The Black Swan, which explores how we build resilience and even robustness in the face of negative events. AQUARIUS (JAN 20-FEB 18): Look at you, just barreling through your reading list! Enhance your experience of the beautiful this week by exploring another segment – might we suggest the free Digital Concert Hall of the Berlin Philharmonic? PISCES (FEB 19-MAR 20): Knowledge and love can never be truly divided. Share the wisdom of this unity with those you love by keeping a journal of your thoughts – be they spiritual insights, cocktail recipes or dating tips – to be passed down to them as the most precious piece of their inheritance.

Play It Safe, Keep Cats Inside

Ali came into Verona Street Animal Shelter March 2018. He was emaciated, had mange and was terrified. I brought him home as a foster but officially adopted him one month later. Sophia was given to us by a friend this February. We weren’t expecting her, and it took a couple weeks for Ali to accept her. Sophia was only 10 lbs. so I was worried he’d accidentally hurt her. He had never met such a small, brave puppy before. Sophia is gaining 2 pounds a week, so she’ll probably be bigger than him! Having two dogs is not only fun, but it’s good for them too. They’re best friends forever now. They spend their time either wrestling, running around, stealing each other’s toys or cuddling.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m staying inside during this emergency, as the state government has requested, but I still let my tomcat “Dodger” out during the day. He would go crazy being stuck inside. However, my daughter told me to stop letting him out, because she says pets can get coronavirus, too. Is Dodger in danger? Could he get it and spread it to me? – Darlene B., Springfield, Massachusetts DEAR DARLENE: Currently, no pets within the U.S. are known to have contracted the coronavirus. A tiger at the Bronx Zoo reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 (and six more tigers are showing symptoms). But there’s very little data to work with right now. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not have definitive evidence that pets can contract COVID-19, they are playing it safe and urging owners to protect their pets from exposure to the virus. So you should, too. You don’t know where Dodger goes when he’s out, so you don’t know if he is being exposed to this virus or other viruses or bacteria that are much more easily contracted and can cause serious illness. Keep him inside and find ways to keep him from losing his mind. That includes spending more time playing with him, making sure he has plenty of toys, and giving him scratching and climbing spots, plus a hideaway. If his behavior gets worse, contact the veterinarian -- Dodger may need to take medication to calm him down for the short term. Also, because he’s been outside, you need to take precautions for yourself. Wash your hands after petting or picking up Dodger, and after cleaning his litter box. Wash his food and water bowls daily in hot soapy water. Here’s to both of you staying healthy and safe!

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day • Wednesday, April 22nd

Your Backyard Isn’t Cancelled…

6 Tips

To Celebrate Earth Day Right At Home

(NAPSI)—The 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22 can be a good time for everyone to take some time to get outside, even if current conditions mean a community event to celebrate isn’t available. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to honor the Earth in your own backyard. “You don’t need to leave home to celebrate Earth Day. Remember, nature starts at your back door,” explains Kris Kiser, President of the TurfMutt Foundation, an organization that encourages outdoor learning experiences, stewardship of green spaces, and care for living landscapes for the benefit of all. “Get outside, mow your lawn, trim bushes, plant a butterfly bush. By becoming a steward of your yard, you are helping the planet. At the same time, you’re supporting your health and well-being, which is increasingly important as families spend more time at home.”

1

Get outside. Your backyard is an outdoor living room and safe place for pets and kids to play. Science proves spending time in your family’s yard is good for your health and well-being, and so important today as everyone looks for creative ways to stay well while being confined to the home. Researchers have found that people living in neighborhoods with more birds, shrubs and trees are less likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and stress.

Research shows people who gardened for at least 30 minutes a week had lower body mass indexes as well as higher levels of self-esteem and better moods overall. They also reported lower levels of tension and stress.

2

Make the outdoors a family project. Take your loved ones outside to assess your space. What’s working well? What could be improved? What can you plan to do together in your backyard? Anything needing to be cleaned up? Make a plan to expand or spruce up your yard.

3

Connect kids to nature. Free, online, do-at-home lesson plans are available from the TurfMutt.com. The environmental education program resources and activities, based on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) principles, give kids the prompts they need to have fun learning about and exploring the nature and science in their own backyards.

4

Know your climate zone. Learn about climate-zone-appropriate plants, the importance of pollinators, and how backyards can support local wildlife. Conduct a plant inventory to determine what’s currently thriving in your backyard. Match that up against the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map to determine the best types of turf, trees, shrubs, and plants for the climate zone.

5

Keep pollinators in mind. Your yard is an important part of the connected ecosystem providing much-needed food and shelter for pollinators, such as birds, bees, butterflies, bats, and other creatures. Select a variety of plants that will bloom all year long. The Audubon Society’s database can help determine which birds will be attracted to which plants for unique regions so you can make good choices about what to plant.

6

Plant, prune or mow. Staying confined to home base doesn’t mean gardening and yard work have to stop. Order garden supplies online or have them delivered from a nearby nursery. Mow the lawn and trim bushes.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne The Christmas song “Silver Bells” was originally called “Tinkle Bells” until co-composer Jay Livingston’s wife informed him that “tinkle” had another meaning.

MOMENTS IN TIME On April 23, 1564, the great English dramatist and poet William Shakespeare is born in Stratford-upon-Avon, the son of a leather trader and the town bailiff. At age 18 he married Anne Hathaway, who was eight years his senior. (The History Channel)

And Spring arose on the garden fair, Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere; And each flower and herb on Earth’s dark breast rose from the dreams of its wintry rest. ~ Percy Bysshe Shelley, “The Sensitive Plant”
