TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Nighttime Visions and Vivid Dreams --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an extremely healthy 76-year-old woman. Almost every night, I am startled awake by visions of people standing over my bed. It’s usually once, but can happen up to three times in a night. It’s often after being asleep for an hour and a half. They’re not dreams. Something wakes me up, and that is when I see a man or a couple or a child standing around my bed or attempting to jump onto the bed. Though it lasts only seconds, my heart hammers and I jump out of bed to chase “them” away, and even checking the door locks. Then I sort of come around and pretty much laugh at myself. As it’s quite frightening, I believe I shout out, and it takes me a bit to calm back down. I take NO prescription drugs nor sleep-inducing medicine. Why am I experiencing this? What actually wakes me up to see these visions? Otherwise, I sleep very well. I would greatly appreciate your insight or any advice as to who I might talk with about it. -- Anon. ANSWER: I hesitate to tell you, but what I am concerned about most is a condition called dementia with Lewy bodies. This is not Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, the earliest symptoms are usually visual hallucinations. If you read this account (https://bit.ly/2Sk1Jzo), I think you may find some characteristics that sound familiar. What makes me doubt this diagnosis is that you report no confusion or memory problems. Although some people may have the hallucinations well before any thinking problems come up, they are in a minority. Wobbliness may go along with Lewy body dementia. Parkinson’s disease may develop visual hallucinations, but that is usually late in the course of the disease. This information can be shocking or depressing, but it is still important information for you to have. There is treatment for LBD. More importantly, there are medications that can make it MUCH worse. I would recommend you visit a neurologist and specifically find someone with expertise in dementia, as that is who is unlikely to miss this diagnosis. Unfortunately, it is not always recognized early. Here is some additional information to read about this condition: https://bit.ly/2BSdmYW. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been on hydrochlorothiazide for the past three weeks. Have you heard of vivid dreams associated with this medicine? I am having difficulty with it. -- L.G. ANSWER: Vivid dreams are not typically associated with hydrochlorothiazide. HCTZ does not cross the blood-brain barrier, so it wouldn’t be expected to have this effect. However, HCTZ often is given along with other medications that can have this effect, especially beta blockers, such as propranolol. If you are taking it as part of a combination drug, I would look at the other drug. Some medications are particularly well known for causing vivid dreams, and it is wise to tell people that before prescribing them. The HIV drug efavirenz can cause such vivid, and sometimes unpleasant, dreams that some people can’t take it. Statins, steroids, antihistamines and SSRI anti-depression drugs all are known to cause dream problems in some people. When I was given the antimalarial drug mefloquine, I had no idea that it was known to cause vivid dreams until I woke up the morning after taking it wondering what had happened. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

Savanna Mae. I turn 13 on July 19th this summer and live with my mom and Grammy. I’m their precious baby girl. I was first featured in “Pet of the Week” on Nov. 6th, 2011. I like to jump up on my 92-year-old grammy’s recliner and lay with her. She then has to climb over the arm of the chair to get out because she doesn’t want to disturb me. My Grammy also doesn’t get to read any more at night lately because I use my own personal set of stairs to climb up into her bed where I get up right next to her and get 15 min belly rubs both evening and morning. I’m spoiled beyond belief and am my mom and Grammys world, as they are mine. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I visited my friend’s house with my cat back in March. Now, my friend says my cat, “Chuckles,” gave her cat fleas. She wants me to pay for flea treatment. I say my cat doesn’t have fleas and I don’t owe her a thing. What do you say? -- Sierra in Modesto, California

DEAR SIERRA: This is one of those spats that sometimes end up being resolved on a TV court show. While entertaining for the audience, it can be heartbreaking for both parties and can end the friendship. There is, of course, no proof that will convince your friend that Chuckles didn’t have fleas back in March. She may not even accept the fact that it’s possible to pick up fleas or flea eggs while walking outdoors and bring them into the house, where they can hatch and then hop on board a pet’s fur. And now that flea and tick season is in full swing, what may have started out as a few fleas is now a full-blown infestation. I’m not a relationship therapist, but if you value the friendship, offer to compromise somehow. You might pay for half the cost of the flea treatment -- topical treatments can be pricey. You could purchase flea prevention products and offer to help apply them in and around her home -- with the promise that you’ll apply them to your home, too, as a preventative measure. In the meantime, doublecheck that Chuckles is flea-free. Comb through his hair and look for dark speckles or visible fleas near his skin. If there are certain spots that he scratches frequently, pay special attention. Even the most diligent cat mamas may deal with fleas at the height of the season. Learn more about flea prevention in my ebook, Fighting Fleas, available on Amazon. com. And send your flea prevention tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

DECOR IDEAS TO GIVE HOMES A FRESH LOOK THIS SPRING PASTEL COLORS: Nothing embodies the spring quite like pastel colors. If colorful, bright flowers dot the garden in the backyard, homeowners can bring those uplifting pastels inside by painting an accent wall or even adding some brightly colored accent furniture to rooms that could use a lift.

CREATE A SALE-WORTHY SHOWPLACE The sentiment “don’t judge a book by its cover” can be applied to many situations. When it comes to selling their homes, homeowners should remember this adage as they prepare their homes for prospective buyers. Homeowners who want to make their properties stand out can take the following steps. De-personalize the home. Homeowners fill their spaces with family photos, heirlooms, personal interests, and other conversation pieces. Prospective buyers may not be able to see past personal belongings and may even be distracted by them. For example, buyers who have strong beliefs about animal welfare may not buy a home displaying hunting trophies. Remove personalized items where possible, replacing them with generic items. Improve the exterior. HGTV says that curb appeal is crucial to making a strong first impression. A messy or lackluster landscape can turn buyers away even before they reach the front door. Mow the lawn and make sure shrubbery has been trimmed. Seasonal potted flowers and plants can help make the house look polished. Repair cracks or damaged walkways, and consider a fresh coat of paint on trim around windows and doors. Pressure-wash siding if necessary.
* English Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) is credited with the first printed use of the words “selfless,” “psychosomatic,” “bipolar” and “bisexual.” * A study by neurologists showed that some patients suffering from brain trauma and damage on the right-hand side of their brain have a compulsive obsession to tell jokes they find hilarious, while not finding other peoples’ jokes funny at all. * Sierra Leone is the world’s roundest country and sits not too far from Egypt -- the world’s squarest country. * Nearly 3% of the ice in Antarctic glaciers is composed of penguin urine. Due to the subzero temperature in that area, it can’t evaporate.

Put things in storage. Rent a storage unit to house items that can make a home appear cluttered. Clean out closets and cabinets, so that when buyers “snoop” during appointments or open houses they see orderly storage areas. If closets are brimming with stuff, buyers may assume the house doesn’t have enough storage space and move on. Make it light and bright. Open up all of the drapes and blinds, and turn on overhead lights so the house is well-lit. Add table lamps or other fixtures to especially dim rooms. Create a hotel experience. Forbes suggests making bathrooms look like a spa. Stack a few pretty washcloths tied with ribbon, add some scented candles and faux plants and buy bathmats and towels in coordinating tones. Remove extraneous items from kitchen counters and replace them with vases of flowers. In addition, set up dining spaces as if one were sitting down to a meal, and ensure appliances are sparkling clean. Use common ‘scents.’ Skip the fish, bacon or other aromatic meals for a few days, as such foods can leave lingering aromas. Baked goods, vanilla and cinnamon might make for more appealing scents. Making a home sell fast involves preparation and the knowledge that buyers are often greatly influenced by their first impressions. REAL ESTATE

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Aries selfesteem level is high, as is your impatience to see more action come your way in the workplace. Good news, Lamb: It could start to happen sooner than you think. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Changing things now could upset a lot of people. But if you feel you’re acting because you believe it’s the right thing to do, others will understand and even come to support you. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A change of mind might not necessarily be a change of heart. You still want to go ahead with your plans, but you might see a better way to make them happen. So go for it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An old business dispute could re-emerge and possibly affect upcoming negotiations. Consider opening up the situation to include suggestions from others on both sides of the issue. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some Leos and Leonas might find it somewhat difficult to get their ideas accepted or even considered. But that’s only for a while. Things will soon return to the way you like them. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The pace seems to be slowing down from the hectic on-the-job run you recently enjoyed. But be assured that you’re still in the race to pick up new workplace-related goodies. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Seasonal changes create opportunities for busy Librans. However, be sure to balance your workload with your personal life so that you don’t overdo it on one end or the other. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A former critic could make a surprise turnaround and become a supporter. But if your Scorpion sense suspects a questionable motive, who are the rest of us to doubt it? SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Data on a new project seems less than dependable. But it might turn out to be just the opposite. Consult with someone who knows how you might best be able to check it out. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Capricorneans face many decisions this week, with the Sea Goat’s kids rating high on the consideration scale, especially regarding vacations and upcoming school matters. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Showing that you care is what Aquarians do so well. It’s your very special skill. And this week, you’ll have several chances to show off that gift for a very special person. Good luck. PISCES (February 19 to March 21) That streak of Piscean wariness should serve you well this week should you be among those who come up against a slippery character offering a fishy deal with nothing to back it up. BORN THIS WEEK: You have an artist’s sense of how to help others see, as you do, the beautiful things about the world. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Staying Informed Has your Meals on Wheels expanded their service? In a number of areas, the program has taken on more volunteers or widened the area they cover, having received grants and other funding, giving more seniors the opportunity to have meals delivered. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, those meals might be covered, if you meet the qualifications. Some areas are establishing meal delivery from restaurants for seniors who shouldn't go out. If you have a town council, they will know about any kind of changes in your area. Some towns have an online list of restaurants with details about whether they're closed or are providing service (curbside, limited inside seating or delivery). Other areas have free senior pickup meals for those who can drive to the location. Call your local senior center or check their website for more information. If you're not certain what programs are available in your area to help you, go online to 211.org and put your ZIP code in the search box. That will take you to the 211 for your state. You can either call them or click on their online directory of information. They list food (delivery and pantry), substance use, utility assistance, transportation and much more. Each agency lists the programs it offers, such as personal support services and family caregiver. Stay healthy.

Build an effective (and budget-friendly)
home gym
Physical fitness is important. Exercise guidelines depend on the individual, but the American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week. That amount may need to be increased to meet specific goals, such as weight loss. In order to meet their fitness goals, many people invest in home gyms. Home gyms can be a convenient way to maximize physical activity and help people maintain muscle mass. According to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, a Harvard-affiliated medical center, staying fit can improve physical strength, reduce seniors' fear of falls, increase confidence, and improve sleep. When setting up a home gym, people may be tempted to invest a fortune into their equipment. But such investments aren't entirely necessary. Here are some ways to have a functional, budget-friendly workout space in your home. · Invest in elastic resistance bands. Invest in lightweight elasticbands. According to a study published in 2018 in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine, such bands can improve strength just as effectively as many weight machines commonly found in gyms. Resistance bands don't take up much space and can be tucked out of sight when not in use. · Dedicate a workout space. Many people find that areas away from the bustle of the household are great spaces to devote to home gyms. Include a full-length mirror that lets you make sure you're performing exercises correctly and invest in a stereo to pump in inspirational music. The fewer the distractions, the more likely you will commit to your exercise regimen. · Invest in a set of dumbbells. Adjustable dumbbells or a few of various weights are a good investment. Dumbbells are compact and can be used to perform a variety of strength-training exercises. Begin with light weights and work your way up to reduce your risk of injury. · Try stability balls. Stability balls are used to perform various core exercises, according to Harvard Medical School. The body's core can be strengthened to improve balance, reduce back pain and more. Stability balls also can be used to perform abdominal crunches, squats, hamstring curls, and body bridges. Balls also can double as a bench when working with dumbbells. · Don't forget about cardio. Elliptical machines, stationary bikes and treadmills are effective, but there are other ways to get your daily dose of cardiovascular exercise. Lateral shuffles between two points on a gym floor, or setting up a circuit of jumping jacks or skipping rope can keep your heart rate up and improve health.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Need a twist tie in an emergency? Check your coffee bag. Many bean bags sold these days -- from the grocery store and specialty roasters alike -- come in a bag with a twist tie built in, so you can fold the bag down and retain freshness. If you really need one, you can pull the twist tie off and seal your grounds in a tin or a zipper-top baggie. * Get to know your frozen veggies. There’s been a lot of emphasis in the past about fresh vegetables. While they’re great, it’s not always possible to get to the grocer’s or farmer’s market regularly. Frozen veggies often have the most vitamins because most are flash frozen right after harvest. You can find many varieties, and they’re easy to use in most recipes. * New use for a favorite mug: “My friend gave me a coffee mug that’s adorable, but it’s not very nice in the microwave -- it just gets too hot! I drink hot tea, and my mug is constantly in and out of the microwave. So, I use my gift mug to hold tea bags! It sits on my counter and holds enough packaged bags for a full week. And I can look at it and think of my friend.” -- T.W. in South Carolina * “To get the rubber tops of my son’s sneakers clean, and keep them that way, I use the melamine cleaning sponges, like the Magic Eraser. Just get it damp, rub off (most) grass stains and keep it handy.” -- P.E. in Kentucky

* Gotta paint a door? Put a lag bolt into the top and bottom of the door, on the narrow. This way, the lag bolt rests on your sawhorses, and you can flip the door over to paint each side. No longer do you have to paint one side, let it dry ALL THE WAY and then flip it over, risking paint getting pulled off the edges.

Capt. Andrew Mullings Develops Specialized Training for the Egypt Fire Department By Randal Simonetti
B
orn in Leicester, England, Captain Andrew “Andy” Mullings would one day draw upon his unique work and leadership experiences to help develop firefighting training scenarios for the Egypt Fire Department. Andy, the oldest of three boys born to parents Jean and Michael Mullings, grew up in the English countryside just 100 miles north of London. Andy enjoyed playing football (soccer) and competed on a travel team across the East Midlands of England. In addition to his travel experiences, he would spend summers with his brothers, Michael and David, in picturesque County Cork in Ireland, home to his mother’s family.
Andy & Joan Mullings
Andy with the Premier League Trophy won in 2016 by his home town team, Leicester City, in NYC. He was fortunate enough to be in Leicester when they lifted the trophy! After graduating from Alderman Newton High School, Andy began his working career for a carpet manufacturing company providing customer service and carpet installations. Andy quickly moved on to join his brother Michael at the British Shoe Company, learning all the manufacturing processes required to produce high quality leather products. “I have always had a thirst to learn new things and especially to figure out how thing work,” Andy explains. At the age of 22, Andy agreed to join his uncle Tom Berminghame’s decorating company in New York City, thinking he would get work experience in America and then return home to England. Funny how best laid plans don’t always work out. Andy really enjoyed New York City and decided to go on his own as a painting and decorating contractor. While working on a Manhattan apartment, he was offered an opportunity to become a foreman at a recycling company. Once again, he was off exploring a completely new industry and figuring out how to solve problems in an entirely new context. Andy also enjoyed the city night life and especially watching his uncle perform music at the Glocca Morra Pub on 23rd Street and 3rd Avenue in Manhattan. Destiny was in the making as one evening his uncle, who had a faithful fan base, introduced Andy to one of his loyal listeners. Her name was Joan, and Andy’s life would once again transform. Joan, originally from Connecticut, had family in Rochester, so the newly married couple came north to be closer to family. They would have two children, Anna, now 27 and working on Long Island and Sean, 23 who lives and works locally. Andy quickly found work with Wegmans, being hired full-time in the meat department. It did not take long for the managers at the Perinton store to observe Andy’s enthusiasm and problem solving skills. He was selected for the Management Development Program within the bakery department. “I learned how to bake and prepare every product from European breads to donuts,” shares Andy. Captain Andrew Mullings In 2008, he would (Red helmet) at the Perinton become part of the Firefighter Training Center “Continuous Improvement

Team” at Wegmans corporate offices. In 2011, he moved to a newly created position as the lead planner for the bakery manufacturing division. Andy lived down the street from the Egypt Fire Department. Each time he passed the firehouse, he would recall his Uncle Jim back in England, who was a career firefighter. “I thought this would be a great way to serve the community and make new friends,” explains Andy. He also enjoyed the challenge of responding to different emergencies and quickly planning how you would approach each situation. In 2015, Andy’s leadership and problem-solving skills were once again recognized by the department officers, and he was asked to consider the role of Lieutenant. He had successfully passed the requirements to drive and operate all of the different fire department vehicles. He was confident he could help new firefighters become experts as they moved through their careers. Andy explains, “When you trade in your black helmet for the officer’s red helmet you quickly feel a strong sense of responsibility. Your fellow firefighters are counting on you for advice and direction as you arrive on the scene.” In 2019, Andy was promoted to the rank of Captain. He now serves as part of the firefighter training unit responsible for developing safety and firefighting techniques which can be effectively deployed under any condition, including the challenges of COVID-19. Andy works directly with Assistant Chief Dale Platteter creating training simulations that will save the lives of firefighters and the citizens they serve. “Joining the Egypt Fire Department was one of the most rewarding decisions I have ever made. Joan and I have made life-long friends, and I have a chance to make a real contribution to our community every time the alarm sounds,” shares Andy. “I strongly recommend the experience to anyone who aspires to become part of a truly dedicated and action-oriented organization.” This is the third in a series of articles submitted by Randal Simonetti, EFD Chief Information Officer, recognizing the courage and commitment of the volunteer firefighters at the Egypt Fire Department as the organization prepares for its 75th anniversary. He can be reached at ras@ignitionltd.com or at 585-738-8333.

They have a wonderful system of keeping customers separated outside, checking that all are wearing masks, keeping few customers in the store at one time, giving the customer a completely sanitized cart (not just a quick wipe), wiping down the credit card machine regularly, not allowing cloth bags for groceries and providing free paper bags instead, and just generally being helpful to the customers and keeping a positive with the yard? It’s their property! They might not have as much free time on their hands. If you’re worried about the property value, maybe you should offer to help them with their yard. Thank you.
The recommendations also said get in and out quickly as possible in the stores, so two people splitting up and getting the groceries gets the job done faster. That’s less time in the grocery store. I have seen big box store parking lots crammed with cars, and I have seen families shopping in there. Leave your family at home. Bring just one or two from the family, too. I don’t see many people doing the 6-foot social distancing rule, and some are without masks. Why does it really matter that your neighbor doesn’t keep up

While some of us follow the social distancing, stay at home, wear the mask orders, others do not. What a disregard for the wellbeing of others! Shame, shame, shame. We know of someone who is sick with a cough, and yet they have company come over their house. The guest was even hugged! They did not wear masks. They also have been driving around and gone out and not for essential things. So, they put everyone at risk. Do they have a death wish? Are they that ignorant, or possibly just defiant? Beware when you go out! If this sick person was there before you,

attitude. All other stores could take a lesson from them to keep our community safe. I will continue to be a loyal customer there. Thank you! Lima Food Pantry certainly takes care Lima’s hungry during this hard time! One example is they work together with Fanatics Restaurant every Tuesday by freely giving Fanatics’ cooked MEALS to Lima’s hungry! Those are free delicious meals, folks! Fanatics Restaurant should be gratefully acknowledged as well as The Lima Food Pantry staff for their well-meaning, freely given efforts! How kind! Thank you! - A Lima resident I want to thank Steve for trimming around my light post. In a world where some, who call themselves neighbors, would not even cut or trim a blade of grass if it were on their neighbor’s lawn, it is refreshing to have a neighbor who knows the value of treating then you could be possibly infected with whatever it is that they have. Meanwhile, for those who do care to follow the guidelines and recommendations, thank you, and may you stay well. In a world turned topsy turvy by the virus, I find it delightful someone having pink rocks. and if they want to leave some at the park, go for it. For the person complaining, lighten up; it is not hurting anything. I have a pink car, and people like looking at it. Most people like it and take pictures of it and think it is nice. Just because you don’t enjoy the pink rocks doesn’t mean you have to take the smile off someone else’s face. Life has become too serious in the light of things, and spreading some happiness is much appreciated. You can just ignore them and scroll on by in your thoughts, like you would on Facebook, for something you don’t like there.

someone the way they would want to be treated - a good principle to live by. It may seem like a small act of kindness, but it was greatly appreciated. Once again, thank you for being such a good neighbor. I went to the drive thru of Five Star in Brockport. I was nervous about how it would turn out since I haven’t done any banking at a drive thru in years. I had deposits to make and asked for a deposit slip, so I could fill it out, and was pleasantly surprised when Jorayn (hope I spelled it correctly) told me that she could just do it for me. Not only did she do that for me, but she also printed up additional deposit slips for me as well. She also told me that when I use them all up to tell them at the bank, and they will print some more up. It is such a pleasure to bank with Five Star. Thanks for being so kind Jorayn and extending such kindness.
In response to the post entitled “Protect Liberty:” How about do the right thing and follow the guidelines and protect others from what could be a death-dealing illness? That is why we are in the situation we are in: people who feel like you do. It’s called common decency, and it’s the ethical and moral thing to do. Like an official said, how difficult can it be to wear a mask? Really! Have a good day, and make sure to stay well. Will you give up your ventilator should you need one? Food for thought. Regarding those who defiantly disobey social distancing, wearing of masks or protest in order to go back to work too soon during this coronavirus pandemic: I feel authorities should collect their social security numbers, and they shouldn’t be allowed to go to the hospital and go on ventilators because they are bringing harm to others.

MOMENTS IN TIME (The History Channel) * On June 1, 1926, Norma Jeane Mortenson -- who would become known as the actress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe -- is born in Los Angeles. During World War II, a photographer “discovered” the photogenic Norma Jeane working in a California munitions factory. * On June 5, 1949, bestselling thriller writer Ken Follett is born in Wales. After college he wrote a novel just for the $400 advance, which he needed to fix his car. The book flopped, and after 10 more novels he finally broke through with “The Eye of the Needle” in 1979. * On June 7, 1962, the banking institution Credit Suisse opens the first drivethrough bank in Switzerland in downtown Zurich. After mounting problems with Zurich’s downtown traffic led to fewer and fewer customers, the drive-thru was closed in 1983.
