The MacDonald family have made beautiful masks for our family and many other home school families like us! A big shout out and lots of prayers for them! Let us hope this ends soon! I want to thank my neighbors in the Hillsboro Cove area in Webster. My husband and I take our nightly walk and recently came across the most awesome window decorations. The neon lights & positive message was just what the doctor ordered! What a great idea! You have made us look forward to our walks! I am so grateful for the dedicated work of school employees and am thoroughly satisfied with how my tax dollars have been spent during the building closure.
I agree with the person who wrote how there are those who defiantly disobey and go out and who do not do the social distancing to boot. How about when and if they get the coronavirus, they waive their right to a ventilator so that some other poor soul can have use of it. They put all the first responders and those in the medical profession at risk. Some people would not care about others and just want to do what they want to do, unless it bit them in the you know where. They would be the first one to boohoo if they were to get sick. Too late then! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

That is indeed great advice. I must admit that sometimes I am guilty of picking up items, and then not buying them. I usually must do that to look at the expiration dates on an item. If the date is not good, it has to go back on the shelf, but in the times we are living in, I wholeheartedly agree that we need to be careful about such things, and I will make a conservative effort to think twice before doing so, although I don’t want to buy food that has already expired. I, for one, wonder why more than one person goes out shopping. I go out by myself and do the grocery shopping for my family. At least, I have that right. I also wonder why some have their adult children drop by while the rest of us obey the restrictions. Just want to reiterate in the post of 4-3-20: if you see someone begging for money for food, yes, they are drug addicts. My son was one

Thank you to every school employee, in every district, for providing the outstanding effort and creativity required to make distance learning work. Teachers are providing instruction in a new format, administrators working tirelessly to provide resources, counselors checking in and sharing information, coaches developing workouts, Secretaries getting work to kids and back to teachers, tech departments sharing resources, custodians thoroughly cleaning, food service and transportation getting meals out, and students for continuing to value education. School buildings are closed, but everyone continues to work overtime. Thank you all!
Yet in the midst of it, I have seen much love and kindness being spread around. I want to thank local businesses, community groups, county boards, and individuals who have reached out to essential workers during this time to encourage us. Thank you for the meals, cards, yard signs, gifts, and much more that you have done to support and encourage me and my coworkers. As a healthcare worker, it has been my privilege to serve the families in our communities as I care for their elderly loved ones during this uncertain time. May the Lord bless you all with the peace that passes all understanding, which comes through Jesus Christ. - Anna Kranz, Livonia, NY
These past few weeks have brought our communities concern, anxiety, and hardship. of them and has told us this. The money is for drugs. There are many food kitchens in Rochester. If you feel the need to help, bring them a meal from McDonald’s, buy them a bus pass to get to a food kitchen, give them some warm clothes (even though they might sell them). Never give them money.
not pack them well in those little bins, and on windy days all their recyclable garbage blows all over into the streets and people’s lawns for others to have to clean up . Please be respectable and pack your trash in tightly. With the virus going on, others should not have to pick up your trash. Keep our country clean!
During our daily walks on [local road] in [local town], it’s amazing to see the amount of garbage that is thrown out of vehicles as they drive down our road in and around the area, including cans, bottles, restaurant trash, etc. Someone is throwing empty single shot bottles of whiskey out their car window. Every day, there seems to be a new one the road. Can you please stop throwing your garbage out the car window? Thank you.
I am curious how the writer who was upset that people are still going out, going to markets knows this? The writer even overheard a woman who said she was not staying home. How did you hear this if you are staying home?
Do the recyclables really get recycled? I was informed they do not. Problem with them is people who put their recyclables out do

Seriously, you are going to rant about a painted rock. Did you ever stop and think that whoever painted this wants to spread a little joy? Then you called it trash on top of it. Why not just let it be? Do not be rude.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My toddlers will not stop tormenting our pets! They chase the cat and pull his tail; they dive-bomb the dog and scare her every time she lays down for a nap. I’m tired of chasing after them and trying to stop them. What else can I do? Lock the pets in another room? -– Susanna Y., Ogden, Utah DEAR SUSANNA: Let me ask you this: Why should the pets be punished every time your toddlers misbehave? Your dog should be able to nap peacefully in her own doggie bed, and the cat should be able to sit quietly at the window. That’s the ideal, anyway. I know it’s difficult, especially since all of us are cooped up right now. But, consider that toddlers tend to react just as well to a punishment/reward system as most dogs (and some cats) do, if not more so. Make it clear that your kids are not to torment the pets -- and that if they do, there will be consequences. As to the consequences: What are their favorite things to do? Play with specific toys? Watch certain Netflix Kids cartoons? Eat candy? They may be very young, but threatening to (temporarily) remove one of their favorite activities or snacks can be effective. And of course, there’s always the tried-and-true time out. I wish I had more advice to give you. Chasing around toddlers is truly exhausting. Just try to be firm and make it clear that it’s wrong for them to torment the pets. We’ll all be able to get out of the house soon. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day.

A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts. ~Washington Irving

A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. LAWN & LANDSCAPING DID YOU KNOW? Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

REASONS TO PLANT A TREE
RESIDENTIAL & COMMERCIAL LAWN MOWING
Call Now & Save
There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer. North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. Like daffodils, freesia are long-lasting, meaning mothers will still be enjoying them long after Mother’s Day has come and gone. The inviting fragrance of freesia makes bouquets of these flowers popular choices for Mother’s Day gifts. Freesia also come in many colors, proving Mother’s Day gift givers a greater chance of finding flowers their mothers will love.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
“Have You Ever Smoked?” ---
Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question that I’d love to see answered in your column sometime. My husband recently had major surgery. Before the surgery, they asked if he has ever smoked. (Husband is 77.) He answered that when he was 9, he smoked a cigarette. He is now in the computer as an ex-smoker, and the nurse told us she is “required by law” to provide him with information on quitting. When physicians ask, “Have you ever smoked?” do they really want to hear about one cigarette, smoked almost 70 years ago? Is this meaningful information, in medical terms? -- S.S. ANSWER: There are very important reasons to know a person’s smoking history, especially when someone is about to undergo surgery. Current smokers should know that quitting well before surgery can reduce risks of surgical complications. The anesthesiologist can be extra-vigilant for breathing issues. Some of these points are valid for ex-smokers who have recently quit or who were very heavy smokers. Of course, one cigarette at age 9 is meaningless, and anytime I hear “required by law” I wonder if it’s really true. In this case, I doubt it: Why give ex-smokers information on quitting? It makes no sense. Primary care providers like me ask about smoking because a significant history of smoking increases heart disease risk, so I might be more likely to recommend treatment to reduce that risk (for example, in a person with elevated blood pressure or cholesterol who otherwise doesn’t quite meet criteria for drug treatment). Also, people who smoked more than 1 pack per day for 30 years, or the equivalent, should have a discussion about whether screening for lung cancer is appropriate. Finally, it’s easier to answer if you have never been a smoker. Some people who smoke socially don’t consider themselves smokers but would still benefit from advice to stop. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I took a sleep study and slept on my back all night because I was wired up and couldn’t sleep on my side. After a couple of hours, I was told that I have moderate sleep apnea. I snore when I’m on my back, but not when I’m on my side. Do you think I really have sleep apnea? -- T.M. ANSWER: Obstructive sleep apnea very often goes unrecognized. It is caused by the soft tissue in the neck obstructing the airway; the muscles relax while you are asleep, closing the airway. This is indeed much more likely to happen when lying on the back (we use the anatomical term “supine”), and generations of spouses have learned that turning a snorer on the side is a good way to get him or her to quit snoring. Snoring is caused by the very same process that leads to sleep apnea; in fact, snoring is a significant risk factor, with up to a third of snorers having the condition. I believe the sleep study. While I am sure you would have demonstrated less obstruction if you could sleep on your side, you still are likely to have some obstruction during the night, especially since we frequently change position while sleeping without knowing it. However, there are many different treatments for sleep apnea, and you should talk with your doctor about which is right for you. You need not jump to the most aggressive treatments. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SENIOR NEWS LINE
When
By Matilda Charles
Are we bored yet?
Being bored isn’t good, especially for seniors. We need to keep our brain cells active, even if we can’t get out of the house for any mental stimulation due to the coronavirus. And we need to find ways to move each day, even if it’s just for 10 minutes at a time, to keep our muscles strong. Look at YouTube.com for mild in-place exercises for seniors. Go online to find a kids’ basketball hoop and soft ball you can hang over the door. Look for a dartboard with magnetic darts. If you have an old Nintendo Wii console, hook it up and get some exercise with the bowling and tennis. If you have an indoor hobby, call your closest store and ask if they have curbside pickup or can mail supplies to you. Put “online craft tutorials” in your internet browser for new ideas. Tune up your guitar and order new strings. Find your old piano books if you have a piano. To keep your brain stretched, if you get a newspaper, do the puzzles, even the ones you normally don’t try. Go online for other puzzles you can print out or complete online. Go to puzzles.usatoday.com for a wide variety of online games. With the crossword puzzles you can choose your skill level (hints versus no hints). Use your keyboard to type in each letter. Try jigsaw puzzles, spelling games, backgammon (play against an opponent or the computer) or mahjong. Also look at Boatload Puzzles (www.boatloadpuzzles.com) for 40,000 crossword puzzles. For real brain stretchers look to Merriam-Webster (www.merriam-webster. com/word-games) or AARP (games.aarp.org). For short-term memory games, look at BrainCurls.com. Meanwhile, here’s a puzzle for you. What is the next letter in this sequence? O T T F F S S __ The answer will be at the end of my next column.
Communication becomes difficult… Trouble communicating with others can be a symptom of various disorders. Difficulty conveying words or emotions can be a condition of autism spectrum disorder, but quite frequently it occurs when a neurological injury affects the portion of the brain responsible for language. The National Aphasia Association states that aphasia is an impairment of language that affects the comprehension or the production of speech as well as the ability to read and write. Aphasia results from an injury to the brain, including head trauma, brain tumors, infections, and stroke. The Cleveland Clinic notes a person with aphasia may experience difficulty speaking, writing, reading, and understanding language. Impairments can range from mild to very severe (nearly impossible to communicate). While aphasia may only affect one area of communication, usually limitations occur across many areas. One of the more common symptoms of aphasia is word-finding issues. This can be characterized by challenges remembering the names of people, events or things. Sometimes an individual may not be able to think of the word he or she wants to say. In other instances, that person may say the wrong word entirely, such as using “rope” for the word “ball.” The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association also states that it is common for someone with aphasia to switch sounds in words, like “wishdasher” for “dishwasher.” Often sentences are difficult to come by, and single words may be easier. Trouble communicating also extends to a person with aphasia having challenges understanding what others are saying, particularly when they speak fast or in long sentences. The situation may be exacerbated when it is noisy or a person is in a group setting. Aphasia can affect anyone. However, it is more common in those who are middle-aged and older. The NAA says roughly 180,000 people are diagnosed with aphasia each year. Even though brain injury is a primary cause of aphasia, it also can create other language-related issues, such as weakness in the muscles that control the face or mouth or an inability to move the lips or tongue in the right way to make sounds. People with aphasia can benefit from working with a speech-language pathologist as early as possible. This professional can present many strategies to help manage deficits or potentially return some measure of communication. Augmentative and alternative communication, such as using images or a computer to tell what a person wants, may be options in more severe cases of aphasia. Aphasia affects many people and can rob them of the ability to communicate effectively without intervention. TF206030

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The Lamb is usually excited about taking on a new challenge. But if that’s a touch of doubt you’re feeling, maybe it’s you telling yourself to go slow on this until you learn more about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Accepting new commitments when you haven’t yet finished the batch on hand could be a bit rash. Better to ease up on the new ones until you get further along with your current lot. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Try to be more open-minded in working toward a resolution of that standoff between yourself and a colleague or family member. A little flexibility now could work to your advantage later. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Some people might be anxious about your plans. So you need to take time to explain what you expect to do and how you expect do it. And don’t forget to ask for suggestions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Dealing with an unfamiliar problem can be difficult. The wisest course you can take is to ask for advice from those who have been where you are and have come through it. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Tackle a frustrating job problem by considering possibilities you might have ignored before. This reassures colleagues you’re serious about finding a solution, even if it’s not totally yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your balanced approach to life proves to be helpful this week when someone you care for needs your spiritual comfort, while someone else benefits from your toughlove practicality. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Once again, you’re likely to be asked to keep a secret for someone. But do you really want to do so? Be honest with yourself and with your needs before you make any such commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Taking a more direct approach from the more diplomatic one you’ve used before could make a difference in finally resolving a too-long-held disagreement. Try it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Being asked for advice is flattering to the Sea Goat, who has a habit of saying the right thing. This time, expect someone to be especially impressed and to act on that sentiment. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) With a number of pressures easing, your project could be making a lot more progress than you expected by this time. That’s great news. But don’t let yourself be distracted; stay with it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An interesting challenge looms that could be exactly what you’ve been looking for. Discuss this with colleagues who could have much to contribute and who might want to join with you. BORN THIS WEEK: Your heart is always open to offer loving concern for others. And they, in turn, reach out to complete the circle. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Birthday Parade Surprises 90-Year-Old Webster Resident By Amanda Dudek
I
t all started when plans for 90-year-old Webster resident, Patricia Copeland, were put on hold because of COVID-19. Patricia’s daughters – Molly Copeland and especially her sisters – had spent an immense amount of time planning their mother’s milestone birthday, arranging to have relatives come in from all over the United States. When, quite suddenly, it became clear this would not be possible on their mother’s birthday at the end of April, Molly knew she had to do something. “We were postponing her birthday celebration, but the situation continued for another two week and another two weeks,” said Molly Copeland who works at Cornell University. “I couldn’t let her birthday go by without it being incredibly special.” Patricia Copeland, a cancer survivor, was very much looking forward to her 90th birthday. When they gave her six months to live, she said, “Well, that just won’t do. They threw me the most incredible 80th birthday party; I have to see what they do for my 90th!” Three years later, Patricia Copeland is now cancer-free. Molly began creating posts on Facebook, asking others to join a birthday parade for her mother. “One of my sisters said that we needed to have someone sing,” recalled Molly. “After searching and posting online, I was contacted by Deborah Conquest, an instructor at Nazareth College, who offered to sing Happy Birthday to my mother.” Molly asked Conquest if she was a professional singer and was assured that she was. “I looked her up afterwards and found she sang the National Anthem and God Bless America for the World Series in Florida in 2003,” exclaimed Molly. “She was being modest!” Her sisters also mentioned their mother had always enjoyed majorettes. “I didn’t know where I was going to get one, but I wished for it on Facebook,” shared Molly. She was surprised to receive a response from Denise Baller, founder of Dancing with Denise dance studio in Webster. “She said she had been a majorette for Bishop Carney, and she would like to be a majorette for my mother’s birthday.” Responses to join Patricia’s birthday parade began coming in. “A woman from a Jeep group called the ROC Wranglers contacted me to let me know they would love to part of my mom’s parade,” said Molly. “Ultimately, seventeen of their members drove Jeeps in the parade.” Molly wasn’t done yet. “When I go for something, I go all out!” she said.
Webster resident, Patricia Copeland, watches her birthday parade! Molly reached out to the Webster police through a relative, and she also connected with the Webster Fire Department, both of which agreed to join the parade. She also connected with NEQALS, a group who also agreed to join. As the day drew closer, Molly grew more excited and nervous about keeping the parade a secret from her mom. “She is smart as a tack,” she said. “She doesn’t miss a thing!” When the day arrived, Patricia Copeland was truly surprised. First, she was regaled with a melodious rendition of Happy Birthday by Deborah Conquest. Then, she was delighted with Denise Baller’s performance as a majorette. Finally, the parade of vehicles arrived in grand style. “I stopped counting after 100 cars,” said Molly. “I was told this was the longest car parade Webster has ever had. People were so excited

90-year-old Patricia Copeland stands with her Happy Birthday yard sign! and actually posted afterwards that they were so excited to be a part of something so big. Some wanted to do a random act of kindness; others just wanted to get out of their house, and still others were beyond thrilled to do both. They knew there was a 90-year-old woman who had been in her house for seven weeks with nobody, and it was her milestone birthday.” Molly contacted the ABC, CBS, NBC and Spectrum stations, all of arrived for the event. Patricia sat behind a small table, amazed. “She had her hands over her mouth, like ‘Oh my!’ like a little kid,” recalled Molly fondly. “There were classic cars and many generations of relatives driving by, honking their horns, many holding Happy Birthday posters!” Patricia was overwhelmed. “She told the reporters she was overwhelmed and speechless,” said Molly. “I think that was the first time in her life! She said how incredibly lucky she was to have her family. When asked her secret to a long happy life, she said it was believing in God, having faith and having a fantastic family behind her.” The feeling is more than mutual. “She is just silly and serious and has the biggest heart ever,” said Molly. “She is just such a blessing to the world. She is amazing.” Molly is so grateful to all those who made her mother’s landmark birthday so special. “I would like to say thank you to all who participated,” she said. “We had such a beautiful day for it in the middle of so many rainy ones, and that to me was the Lord’s work. I hope everyone knows that something as small as coming out and honking your horn for someone can make a world of difference and can make them so happy.” Enjoy this article? CLEVER WAYS TO USE LEFTOVERS CREATE NEW MEALS. Using leftovers does not mean eating the same exact meal a second time. Ingredients can be utilized in new ways. For example, a roast chicken can be broken down and the meat can be used for fajitas on another night. Leftover tomato sauce and meatballs from a Sunday dinner can be turned into an impromptu chili with the addition of beans and peppers. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Unique gifts ideas for Mother’s Day
MISS GERMAN 1st Grade
Theater tickets: If Mom is a fan of live theater then nothing will elicit a bigger smile than tickets to a Broadway show she has had her eyes on. If Broadway is a bit too far for you to travel, do your homework and find a traveling production of a former Broadway show. Such productions often feature many of the same actors who made the play famous on Broadway so you’re still bound to see an unforgettable show Mom will love.

585-330-0459 The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.
WHY IT’S WISE TO HIRE VETERANS WITH DISABILITIES (NAPSI)—“Today, nearly 4 million Americans have a service-connected disability. At a time when many employers are struggling to fill positions, hiring veterans with disabilities can boost diversity and inclusion efforts,” explained Jeff Hall, national employment director for DAV (Disabled American Veterans). For example, Dave Ellis found it difficult to get a job after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army. “I had a severe back injury, but I also carried mental scars from active duty,” he said. After six months of searching, he was able to find a supportive company that understands and values the traits that come from military training, including job-ready skills, tested leadership abilities and a mission-focused work ethic. For others, however, it can be a struggle. In fact, a survey in The Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation found that 57 percent of veterans with disabilities transitioning to the civilian workforce feared hiring discrimination due to their disability. “The reality is that many of America’s businesses, big and small alike, recognize the importance of hiring veterans with disabilities, but often don’t know where to begin,” added Hall. To address this need, DAV has published “The Veteran Advantage: DAV Guide to Hiring and Retaining Veterans with Disabilities.” This free, comprehensive guide is the result of more than four years of study about what the veteran community contributes to the workforce and how hiring veterans, especially disabled ones, can improve a company’s bottom line.
ET Precision Optics, Inc. 33 Curlew St. Rochester, NY 14606 (585) 254-2560
The 36-page publication, which can be downloaded at http://dav.la/jobs, offers best practices and helpful tools for employers. But it goes further, helping to correct misperceptions and inspire more organizations to hire from this talent pool. Content includes statistics about veterans with disabilities, in-depth onboarding and retention strategies, a practical checklist for employers, and explanations of financial incentives, tax credits and other support.
Precision CNC Machining Manufactures optical components, using Milling, Turning and Swiss machines. 4 10 - hour days, with 2 shifts.
The Guide also highlights powerful testimonials of veterans thriving in successful careers, and case studies from employers who benefit from having disabled veterans in their workplace. Nationally respected companies such as First Data and USAA apply the findings within their own internal human resources departments and hiring teams.

There are also free and helpful resources that veterans themselves can take advantage of to help with the transition into a civilian career. For example, DAV holds free career fairs throughout the country for veterans and their spouses. Details are available at http://dav.la/jobs. “While our nation’s veterans, particularly those who have been injured in service, are faced with unique challenges, they also offer the skill sets, loyalty and dedication needed to help successfully power America’s economy,” said Hall. GRILLED CALIFORNIA SWEET POTATOES (NAPSI)—The next time you’re firing up the outdoor grill (or indoor grill pan, for that matter), throw on a sweet potato or two. An easy, healthy side dish with a huge wow factor, grilled sweet potatoes are nutrient rich, high in fiber and absolutely delicious. And they go great with burgers, steaks, chops, chicken or pretty much anything off the grill. Start with this basic recipe, and if you’re feeling creative, try different shapes—sweet potato coins or steak fries, for example. Or add your favorite herbs and spices—such as chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, cinnamon or smoked paprika.
Grilled Sweet Potatoes Serves 3 or 4 1 lb orange- or yellow/white-fleshed sweet potatoes, cut lengthwise into ¾-inch wedges 1 ½ Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp salt, plus more for sprinkling Heat a grill or grill pan to mediumhigh. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine sweet potatoes, oil and salt. Arrange sweet potatoes on the grill or grill pan and cook until lightly charred and tender, 6 to 8 minutes, turning halfway through. Sprinkle with more salt and serve. For more recipes, nutritional information and tips for cooking with California sweetpotatoes, go to www.casweetpotatoes.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Free up space on your smartphone by setting text messages to auto delete after a certain amount of time, like 30 or 60 days. If you have a friend who loves to send you gifs or endless bitmojis, you might want to have your chuckle, then delete. These image files take up much more space than a text message. * “Baking soda can have a whitening effect on some fabrics and is a good alternative for items that might be sensitive to the harshness of bleach in the washing machine. It’s fantastic for musty items as well. Add a cup of baking soda to a load of towels, then add a cup of vinegar to the rinse water.” -- T.H. in Kansas * Periodically take down curtains and run them through the clothes dryer to dust. If they are not delicate, you can add a couple wool dryer balls to help loosen the dust. Rehang as soon as they are finished to avoid unsightly wrinkles.

* “Drop a small item in a hard to reach place? Slip a sock over the end of a vacuum hose attachment and hold to secure. Turn on the vacuum and “suck up” the small item. The suction will hold it in place, but it will not go into the vacuum. Rather, it will be held captive in the sock, which you can simply slip off for retrieval.” -- A.F. in New York * Pet treats for fish? Sure! If you have lettuce in your vegetable crisper, most varieties of fish would enjoy a nibble on a floating piece. Just make sure that you remove any uneaten bits after a day. * “Tired of waiting for that frothy head on your beer or root beer to go down? Stick your finger in it and watch it disappear like magic.” -- K.E. in Idaho
