HOW TO KEEP GRILLED FOODS WARM Place foods in the slow cooker. If the stove is not an option because other components of the meal are being baked or broiled, grilled foods can be placed in ceramic slow cookers with lids. This can potentially keep foods warm for longer periods of time than aluminum foil tents without sacrificing flavor.

SAFETY IN AND AROUND THE POOL Create barriers. Preventing accidental drowning means removing easy access to pools. Pools should be surrounded by secure fencing with an automatically latching gate. Fences should not be accessible by climbing. Extra precautions like installing a safety cover on inground pools and removing or securing ladders when the pool is not in use can help as well.

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal. The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.

RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS

REMODELING

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF ROOF TROUBLE Worn shingles: Shingles should lie flat against the roof, so any that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced.

(315) 986-8300 (585) 454-1220 Control mold when using air conditioning Exposure to mold in a home can be hazardous, leading to any number of adverse health effects, including respiratory distress. Certain strains of mold may release mycotoxins, which can cause bleeding in the lungs and pneumonia. Mold can grow in any dark and damp spot, which makes air conditioning units prime locations for mold proliferation. Mold spores can be circulated through a home via a central air conditioning system or window air conditioning unit. Mold spores in the air are very easy to inhale, especially for young children and elderly people. Air conditioners also are susceptible to mold growth. Preventing mold from becoming a problem means being in tune to indicators that mold may be present, and then taking the necessary actions to eradicate that mold and preventing future growth. Visible mold or a musty smell when operating the air conditioner are prime indicators of a problem. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A chaotic atmosphere taxes the patience of the Aries Lamb, who prefers to deal with a more orderly environment. Best advice: Stay out of the situation until things settle. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Tension runs high in both personal and workplace relationships. This can make it difficult to get your message across. Best to wait until you have a more receptive audience. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This is a good time to take a break from your busy schedule to plan for some well-deserved socializing. You could get news about an important personal matter by the week’s end. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An offer of help could come just when you seem to need it. But be careful about saying yes to anything that might have conditions attached that could cause problems down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Sometimes a workplace colleague can’t be charmed into supporting the Lion’s position. That’s when it’s time to shift tactics and overwhelm the doubter with the facts. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You continue to earn respect for your efforts to help someone close to you stand up to a bully. But be careful that in pushing this matter you don’t start to do some bullying yourself. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t ask others if they think you’re up to a new responsibility. Having faith in your own abilities is the key to dealing with a challenge. P.S.: That “private” matter needs your attention. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to use that Scorpian creativity to come up with something special that will help get your derailed career plans back on track and headed in the right direction. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While change is favored, it could be a good idea to carefully weigh the possible fallout as well as the benefits of any moves before you make them. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Goat continues to create a stir by following his or her own path. Just be sure you keep your focus straight and avoid any distractions that could cause you to make a misstep. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague’s demands seem out of line. But before reacting one way or another, talk things out and see how you might resolve the problem and avoid future misunderstandings. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A personal matter appears to be making more demands on your time than you feel you’re ready to give. See if some compromise can be reached before things get too dicey. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re able to communicate feelings better than most people. Have you considered a career in the pulpit or in politics? (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Regulates blood sugar: The combination of fructose and glucose in honey may help the body regulate its blood sugar levels, which could be beneficial to those with diabetes. Certain types of honey also may have a lower hypoglycemic index, which means they don’t cause a dramatic shift in blood sugar, according to the food and health resource Real Food for Life.

Tipping isn’t even mandatory. I am a hairdresser, and I always tell people to do what they can. People who are on fixed incomes or don’t make a lot occasionally treat themselves. There was time a lady could only afford to give me $2, and I told her, “It’s fine; you do what you can. It’s the thought that counts,” and I depend on tips, too. People are doing the best they can in this world and shouldn’t be shamed for it. If someone is at least leaving a tip, it’s better than nothing.

During a recent visit to the ER, two of the nurses were not kind and not friendly. It is such a shame that they would act in such a manner, particularly in the profession they have chosen. Cold would be a good word to use in describing them. I’ve had vet technicians who were kinder to my dog! I am seeing a lot more parking spaces designated for those who are too lazy to do their own shopping. The first 6+ parking spots are taken. Handicap, I understand. Parents with toddlers - not necessary. I schlepped 3 small children through parking lots to get my errands done and survived. Now, you don’t

even need to leave your car or house! Walking and fresh air are good for you. It’s a weeknight at almost 10pm. Normally, the street is peacefully quiet at this time. People are in bed because they have to work in the morning, and you’re mowing your lawn? I live houses away from you, and I could hear it. Imagine the poor people right next to you! Have some respect. I’ve seen your car there during the day, at all hours, when you could be mowing, and regardless, common sense is free.

WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOBILE PHONE ETIQUETTE Keep private conversations private. When the phone rings while you are in public and you don’t want to allow the call to go to voicemail, answer the call and immediately and politely explain that you are in public. This indicates to the person on the other end of the line that you do not want to broadcast potentially sensitive information to strangers, while also showing those around you that you respect them enough to reserve such conservations for private settings. DID YOU KNOW? Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer.

Vintage Ice Cream Molds at Perinton Historical Society - In the late 1800s through the 1950s, it was customary to use pewter molds to sculpt ice cream into various shapes. Vintage ice cream molds are now used for decorative purposes only, due to the lead content in the pewter. This collection of 50 molds was donated by Juliet Miller Moynihan. The molds had belonged to her uncle, David Starr Jordan (1921-1990), a Fairport attorney. On display at the Fairport Historical Museum through the end of August 2019. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel Ways to Make the World a Better Place for Seniors (Family Features) By 2050, the senior population (adults age 65 and older) will be more than double that of the world’s youngest citizens, and the number of people living beyond age 80 is expected to triple over the next 30 years. As the aging population increases, some 11.3 million seniors are living alone, according to the Institute on Aging. In addition, women are twice as likely as older men to live by themselves. Without proper support, seniors may face a wide range of issues including limited mobility, chronic conditions, improper nutrition and feelings of loneliness. For example, older adults can have problems chewing or may take medications which interfere with their appetites. However, research shows lack of companionship may be the biggest challenge. In fact, an AARP survey found 1 in 5 adults over the age of 40 were “socially disconnected,” which can impact health. People who reportedly experienced loneliness and isolation had lower mental well-being scores, and those who were dissatisfied with their level of social engagement were more likely to report a decline in cognitive function, as well. While anyone can benefit from a kind gesture, seniors are some of the most in-need members in many communities. There is likely a wide range of opportunities to enhance the lives of seniors in your area. Numerous programs and agencies exist to help you determine the best way to make a difference.

On Aug. 5, 1981, President Ronald Reagan begins firing 11,359 air-traffic controllers striking in violation of his order to return to work. Two days earlier almost 13,000 air-traffic controllers went on strike over negotiations to raise their pay. On Aug. 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world’s first atom bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan. On Aug. 7, 1959, the American satellite Explorer 6 is launched into Earth orbit. The 142-pound spacecraft featured a photocell scanner that transmitted a crude picture of the Earth’s surface from a distance of 17,000 miles. The photo, received in Hawaii, took nearly 40 minutes to transmit. On Aug. 8, 1863, after his defeat at Gettysburg, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee sends a letter of resignation to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Davis refused the request.

One example is Ready to Care, an initiative from Home Instead Senior Care that challenges people to complete weekly care missions. Each activity guides members through various ways to give to senior-related causes, learn about the aging crisis and issues impacting seniors, and serve seniors through small actions of kindness. Most care missions are simple acts, such as opening a door, learning about Alzheimer’s or helping with a chore. Each week, a new mission is delivered to participants’ phones via text message. Small gestures, like these simple acts of kindness, can go a long way toward improving a senior’s day. Physical assistance: Most seniors are eager to retain their independence, but everyday tasks can pose fall risks or require exposure to harsh weather conditions that can be dangerous to older adults. • Offer to bring in the daily newspaper or mail. • Mow their lawn or offer to help with other yardwork. • Lend a hand in caring for pets, such as taking a dog for a walk or helping clean up waste from the yard. • Offer moral support and a sense of physical safety by volunteering to join them on a walk. Social support: Loneliness is common among seniors, especially those who live alone. Show seniors in your area they have a meaningful place in the community and options for companionship. • Offer a friendly wave and say hello when you see them out. • Invite them to dinner, either at your home or at a restaurant. • Have your children or kids you know in the area draw pictures or write letters. • Make a date for an afternoon or evening of entertainment, such as cards, a movie or board games. Practical solutions: For various reasons, some seniors may be unable to complete everyday tasks. Offer a helping hand in their daily routines when possible. • Lend your time to take them to run errands. • Deliver baked goods or a home-cooked meal to improve access to nourishing foods. • Help arrange for professional assistance and services, such as an audit to ensure homes are safe GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Use Keto Diet Only in Short-Term

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 (Near the Re/Max building)

Henrietta • 585.359.4987

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your opinion of the keto diet? I have been doing it for a few weeks now and lost a few pounds, but it goes against everything I usually eat -- high quantities of red meat, lots of full-fat foods and dairy. Since I am losing some weight and actually feel better and am sleeping better, I like the short-term results, but I cannot see this as a long-term way of life. I am concerned about all that fat going into my body and clogging my arteries. I exercise every day with Zumba, jogging, etc. -- J.P. ANSWER: The ketosis diet favors very large amounts of fat -60% to 80% of calories, with 15% to 20% of calories from protein and 5% or less from carbohydrates. The theory is to cause ketosis, a physiological condition of ketones in the blood as a result of high fat intake. It has been used since the 1920s as a treatment for seizures, but now is used for weight loss. Like every diet, it has both good and bad aspects. On the good side, it is effective at short-term weight loss. However, much of the apparent early weight loss is due to water weight, which is a universal finding on a high-fat diet. Weight gain is likely when stopping the diet. It is highly restrictive. Further, many of the foods that you can’t eat on this diet are those that have been shown to be associated with improved health, especially vegetables and most fruits. Most people will have a substantial increase in cholesterol levels (by as much as 50%). The red meat and saturated fat probably present an independent risk of heart disease and cancer (even apart from its effect on cholesterol), although this remains somewhat controversial. I do not recommend the keto diet for long-term use, at all. It may have some benefit in helping with short-term weight loss, but I think there are much healthier alternatives for most people.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Your column about the 58-year-old woman who felt like she had oil in her eye reminded me of having a very similar situation. I described it to my optometrist, and he also diagnosed ocular migraine. I wanted another opinion, because the only symptom I had was the oil, no headache or visual disturbances. The ophthalmologist diagnosed blepharitis, or clogged oil glands at the base of my eyelashes. She recommended placing a warm pack of rice in a sock over my eye and then washing the eye area with baby shampoo on a washcloth. I did this for a week or two, and on my visit with her to recheck the eyes, the problem was gone. -- J.P. ANSWER: Thank you for writing. Blepharitis is caused by changes in the meibomian glands, oil glands that are present in both eyelids, often associated with changes in bacteria. I usually see people with this condition noticing red eyes and a gritty sensation. However, you are quite right that it includes blurry vision, and the eye-care professional sometimes can see an oily or foamy film over the eye. The treatment the ophthalmologist recommended works for most people. Gentle lid massage may help get additional oily material out of the glands. However, antibiotics or other treatments are sometimes necessary. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. ROC Rec Fest is coming to Spencerport! – By Simon Devenish

Festival Director Simon Devenish enjoys kayaking on the Erie Canal in Spencerport

Spencerport Depot & Canal Museum

Mark your calendar now for Saturday, September 14th camping, cycling, even caving. Now my wife Laura and I live close to from 10am-4pm. Why? Because you’ll want to bring your the canal in the village and especially enjoy cycling and kayaking,” family and friends to the first ever Rochester Recreation he said. Festival – ROC Rec Fest! Demkos lives in Ogden and grew up in Churchville. He bought Café When Spencerport resident Simon Devenish (Director, Spencerport Canal Museum) and Spencerport businessman Phil Demkos (Owner, Café Macchiato) began exploring ideas to attract people to the west side of Rochester, they focused on what Spencerport has to offer: the canal, the towpath, a great park, two terrific museums and many popular eateries. They felt the obvious direction was to capitalize on recreation opportunities, and the idea of ROC Rec Fest was born. Working to turn that idea into a real event, Devenish and Demkos formed a corporation and are now looking for sponsors, vendors and volunteers. Sponsors may be businesses, groups or individuals providing initial funding. Vendors will be organizations that sell goods or services related to recreation and outdoor activities or promote recreation in their area. Volunteers are needed for a variety of administrative jobs leading up to the event as well as for set up and parking on the day of the festival. “We know we will have to start small,” Devenish said, “but the more people we can involve in this new venture, the sooner we will have another annual event drawing people to our village for recreation, food and entertainment.” If the event is eventually successful enough to generate profits, that money will be put back into the Spencerport community in the form of scholarships and community grants. ROC Rec Fest will have something for everyone! The event, to be held at the Spencerport Firemen’s Field, will include five areas or “zones:” an Activity Zone featuring games and physical challenges; a Vendor Zone featuring products, services and ideas related to outdoor recreation; a Demo Zone where children and adults can be part of tutorials on everything from bicycles to yoga; a Food Zone and a Live Music Zone.

Macchiato at 123 S. Union Steet a year ago and is eager to be a part of efforts that will bring people to Spencerport’s village center. “Obviously, as a local business owner, I have an interest in making Spencerport a destination for people,” said Demkos. “My parents own Riki’s Family Restaurant in Fairport, and they also have to deal with the impact of an extended canal bridge closure. So, while that situation is an immediate concern, I’m also committed to the longterm success of our community and being part of making that happen.” Demkos and his family enjoy horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking and camping, some of the reasons he is a strong advocate for outdoor recreation. “My goal with ROC Rec Fest is to promote community health and wellness with fun, challenging outdoor activities,” Demkos stated. “Our long-term goal is to encourage people of all ages to maintain a healthy lifestyle while taking advantage of the outdoors.” Please contact Devenish and Demkos at info@rocrecfest.com immediately if you are interested in becoming a festival Sponsor or Vendor on Saturday, September 14th. Groups, families and individuals willing to Volunteer should also send a message to info@ rocrecfest.com. If you would like more information about this topic, please contact Festival Director, Simon Devenish on (585) 851-1629 or send an email to info@rocrecfest.com.

Older residents of the Ogden-Spencerport area might find this reminiscent of the beginnings of Canal Days and Christmas by the Canal. Both events began small and grew exponentially over the years as people came from all over Rochester to share in the charm of a small canal town. They hope to follow in those footsteps. Part of the decision to organize this new event now as opposed to a year or two from now, is due to the upcoming extended closure of the Union Street bridge. Devenish and Demkos believe that creating an activity which will draw families to the village will be beneficial for everybody’s business. Another goal of ROC Rec Fest is to promote and encourage outdoor recreation. Devenish, who moved to Spencerport from Perth, Australia, says he has been involved in outdoor recreation all of his life, first with his family, then through the scouting program and now with his wife, Laura. “Growing up, I enjoyed canoeing, kayaking, hiking, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Gardeners I am an avid wild life lover. I feed all the birds and critters. Recently, a hawk has discovered my Bird feeders and stalks it. It has killed numerous birds around my feeders. I have tried plastic owls, pinwheels, next is a scarecrow. I have numerous trees which is a perfect cover for it to swoop in & attack the birds. I have even moved my feeders near and underneath a tree to protect them. But this hawk is a great stalker! Please help! – Anna

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County vary for this length of time needed so is not absolute. Moving the feeder under a tree makes it more attractive to the hawk since it will watch to see where the birds go. The trees will just shelter the hawk from other birds such as crows which might attack it. Leaving feeders in the open is a better location since it allows the small birds a chance to see and escape the hawk. Obviously at this point, that is not an effective solution.

How do you help flowers withstand heat waves?

• Water at the appropriate times of day. The National Gardening Association notes that it’s best to water in the early morning and evening because less water will be lost to The best thing is to take down the feeders evaporation during these times of day than for a month to give the hawk incentive to during the afternoon, when temperatures look elsewhere for food. Recommendations tend to be at their hottest.

• Choose the right watering method. It’s not just when but also how you water that can affect flowers during summer heat waves. Aboveground sprinklers might be great for lawns, but the NGA notes that such sprinklers can encourage the spread of disease on certain plants, including roses. Many gardening professionals recommend soaker hoses when watering flowers because they promote deep watering that can help the plants withstand the summer heat. If you must use an overheard watering system, set the timer so plants are watered in

early in the morning or evening. • Routinely check the soil moisture. Soil moisture can help gardeners determine if their flowers have enough water to withstand the heat. The NGA advises gardeners to dig a 12-inch deep wedge of soil from their gardens to determine its moisture levels. If the top six inches of the soil is dry, water. If that area is still wet or moist, the plants have enough moisture to withstand the heat. Check these moisture levels more frequently during heat waves than other times of year. - Answer from Metro Creative
