A big Thank You to everyone who answered my notice in the Free Stuff Needed section of the GVPS. Your kindness is unbelievable and I hope you receive a blessing in return. Thanks to the GVPS for providing the space for this service. A lot of needs are met, and good stuff gets We went to the Arts Festival this weekend in our beautiful Victorian town, and there were more dogs there than vendors. Why is it that even though all the ads for the festival requested (not suggested) you leave Fido at home, people decided it didn’t mean them? No dogs mean no dogs. Most of the dogs were panting and looked hot and the hot pavement couldn’t have been good for their feet. Please people, for their safety leave them home. On 8/14, I had items to purchase or on which to make an offer. I left to get gas, and when I returned, a large dog cage was taken with no payment left. The sign I left on it said, “Make offer, live on Co Rd 41.” To the person who took it, you GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

To those who were fired from our local store for not following the rules: you both were quick to judge all other employees, but when it came to you, you could do no wrong. You took all the good hours, and you didn’t have a good word to say about anyone. You got what you deserved. Please stop putting your recycling into my bin. My bin was very full this week, yet you stuffed yours in causing mine to spill into the road. You have done this numerous times. I almost got your license plate today, just wasn’t quite quick enough. Genesee Valley Penny Saver, thank you for all your hard work. A huge thank you to the lady who saw our pontoon boat covers fly off while we were towing on Rt. 5&20 between Lima and East Avon. don’t have to clean up after you. You may think this is a free service for our town but we pay our town taxes. Take care of your own garbage and recycling, please. We are one of two houses left that have no access to city water and have a failing well. The town keeps brushing our concerns and complaints off! We have also paid for the service fees related to said water that we don’t have! I am a retired scientist and engineer, environmentalist, and solar energy proponent. When I put out yard signs in support of a project, they were stolen within days. Apparently, the rabid opposition, besides being opinionated and misinformed, also has an uncivil aspect.

Page 4

Should I be scared, or just disappointed in their shameful behavior? To that entitled person who patronizes every store: we service workers do not care that you are running late and must have said item right now, right away. You overbooked your own schedule. That is not our problem. Keep yourself on time. We are paid minimum wage, meaning if they could pay us less, they would. By the way, it’s not our fault that the store is out of a product you need. Deal with it like an adult. Thanks.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An upcoming trip could create some problems with your schedule unless you tie up as many loose ends as possible before you head out the door. Ask a friend or colleague to help you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Being eager to start a new project is fine. However, moving ahead without knowing what actually will be expected of you could cause a problem down the line. Ask some questions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting through some recent challenges in good shape might give you a false sense of security. Don’t relax your guard. You need to be prepared for what else could happen. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Caution is still advised, even though you think you’re as prepared as you need to be. Keep in mind that change is in your aspect, and you should expect the unexpected. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Lion’s gift of persuasion helps you get your points across, even to some of your most negative naysayers. An old friend might seek you out for some advice. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Being sure of your convictions is fine. But leave some room for dissenting opinions. You might learn something that could help you avoid a possible problem later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting good legal advice on what your rights actually are is the first step toward resolving that pesky problem so that it doesn’t re-emerge at a later date. Good luck. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Longtime relationships work well this week, whether they’re personal or professional. It’s a good time to invite new friends and colleagues into your life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good week to do the research that will help you uncover those irrefutable facts that can back you up on your new venture when you most need it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Change is an important factor in your aspect this week and could affect something you might have thought was immune to any sort of adjustment or “alteration.” AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Being asked to share someone’s deeply personal confidence might be flattering, but accepting could be unwise. Decline gracefully but firmly. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) As wise as you are, you could still be misled by someone who seems to be sincere but might not be. Take more time to assess the situation before making any commitments. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to face challenges that others might try to avoid, and by so doing, you set an example of courage for all. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapes can save homeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertime but drop considerably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

Nothing can be more frustrating than wanting to begin a project only to spend precious time looking for tools. Almost as important as the investment in tools is the investment in tool storage. Hardwood or metal tool chests feature various drawers and cabinets that can house tools of different sizes. By keeping tools in a chest, they’re easy to find and more likely to stay sharp and in good condition. Metal tools should be stored in a cool, dry area, as dust and moisture can cause rusting issues on metal tools. One way to alleviate rust is to spray metal tools with a product like WD-40 to serve as a moisture barrier, then store them in closed drawers or containers. All tools do not necessarily have to be stored in a garage or work shed. Many homeowners like to keep smaller tools in the house so that frequently used items are within reach. A hammer, wrench, pliers, and a few screwdrivers are handy tools to have around inside the house. ●

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

Feral Cat Colony Getting Out of Hand DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have a number of feral cats living in the wooded area behind our house. I know that these cats normally can’t be acclimated to indoor living, but watching their colony expand isn’t desirable, either. So I’d like to get them to a vet and have them spayed or neutered, and either rehome them somehow or release them again. Any tips on doing this? — Sharon in Atlanta DEAR SHARON: The most common and probably most effective way to catch feral cats is to trap them one at a time using a live trap. They are available at hardware and home-improvement stores, at some pet stores or online. Before starting, find out if there is a feral cat rescue organization in your area. In Atlanta, the nonprofit LifeLine Animal Project may be able to loan you traps, as well as provide sterilization services. Otherwise, contact the veterinarian you plan to work with and make sure he or she is OK with treating, spaying and neutering the cats, and find out the prices in advance. Depending on laws in your area and on who owns the woods behind your property, you may only be able to set the traps on your property. If the feral cats don’t visit regularly, you’ll first need to lure them using food they’re attracted to. When they come around looking for this food, set up the live trap. Trap, neuter and release (TNR) programs typically release the treated cats back into their home territory, as relocation often doesn’t work. Expect the cats you trap to continue their lives in the woods — with the realization that the colony likely won’t grow over time. Quitting Smoking Better Than Any Cough Syrup

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter smokes. She doesn’t have COPD now, but last spring she had bronchitis and was off work for a week. When she went back to work, she didn’t feel good, and her doctor told her that she had pneumonia in both lungs and wondered why she went back to work. She still takes cough syrup under her doctor’s orders. -- N.P. ANSWER: Getting someone to quit smoking is a challenge, but perhaps some advice I can give your daughter might help. The first piece of advice is that a cough necessitating cough syrup on a routine basis indeed might be a sign of COPD. There are two major forms of COPD: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The definition of “chronic bronchitis” is a productive cough for three months in each of two successive years. The second piece of advice is that quitting before there are serious symptoms is the best time to quit. Although the body has some ability to recover from the effects of chronic cigarette smoke, there is a degree of permanent damage in long-term smokers. Quitting greatly slows down the rate of ongoing damage to the lungs and reduces the risk of having lifelong symptoms of shortness of breath and cough. Quitting smoking will do more good than any cough syrup can.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES According to Allergy & Asthma Care of New York, allergies and other sinus issues can cause puffiness and dark eye circles. Histamines, which are released when an allergen is present, can cause blood vessels to swell and inflame. Getting tested for seasonal allergies can help people identify some possible triggers. Alleviating allergy symptoms can reduce the appearance of dark circles in some cases.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Does taking Norvasc or any calcium channel blocker reduce or destroy the calcium in the bones, eventually causing osteoporosis? -- E.G. ANSWER: No. Calcium channel blockers, like amlodipine (Norvasc), work on cells in the heart and blood vessels, controlling the flow of calcium into the cell. Calcium in the cell is one of the regulators of smooth muscle cells, and for Norvasc in particular, that means its major effect is on blood vessels, causing them to open up and reduce blood pressure, and thus the amount of work the heart needs to do. Calcium in bone is used structurally, where it combines with other ions to form hydroxyapatite, the mineral that keeps bones hard and strong. The mechanism for calcium entry into bone cells is very different. Calcium channel blockers do not affect mineralization of the bone, nor do they increase the risk for osteoporosis. One group found that people on calcium channel blockers may have a slightly higher risk of fractures; however, that was thought to be due to an increased number of falls, especially in the elderly. Physicians need to take care not to use too much medication, especially ones that dilate blood vessels, as they can increase risk of dizziness and falls.

DR. ROACH WRITES: Many readers kindly shared their recommendations about preventing underarm odor, and the most commonly mentioned, by far, was crystal mineral salt deodorants, of which there are several brands. Several people made their own deodorants by mixing baking powder, cornstarch and olive or coconut oil. Other people noted using antibacterial soaps or cleansing products containing the same products we use in the operating room, such as chlorhexidine and hexachlorophene. A product with zinc oxide and talc helped one reader. Finally, more than a few people noted that removing all underarm hair was necessary to successfully get rid of odor. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. THE FLORIDA KEYS DELIVER EXPERIENCES UNLIKE ANYWHERE ELSE (NAPSI)—The most significant worldwide travel trend today is individuals’ desire for experiential travel. Gone is the era of ticking destinations off a “bucket list”; today’s traveler seeks personally transformative encounters with people and places that bring deeper meaning and lifelong memories to a vacation.

ONLINE POLL: Comments made this past week by environmental youth activist, Greta Thunberg, have ignited passionate conversations regarding environmental policies. How concerned are you about the United States' environmental initiatives?

The Florida Keys & Key West abound in unique experiences that can be found “Only in the Keys” throughout the 125-mile-long island chain. On a drive down the famed Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West you’ll enjoy the distinctive character of individual islands. In Key Largo, take a 90-minute canal cruise on the African Queen, the original vessel from the 1951 film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. A registered national historic site, the boat looks much as it did on the silver screen. For a “hook and cook” experience in Islamorada, book a charter in the Sportfishing Capital of the World for exhilarating offshore, reef or backcountry fishing—then take your catch to a local restaurant to be prepared according to a signature local recipe.

The 9,000-acre National Key Deer Refuge was established in 1957 to protect the diminutive deer and other indigenous wildlife.

In Key West, explore history with former President Harry Truman and author Ernest Hemingway. The Harry S. Truman Little White House Museum is Florida’s only presidential museum. The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is where the writer lived and wrote masterpieces in the 1930s. Be sure to pet a descendant of Hemingway’s six-toed cat. Finally, take a selfie just 90 miles from Cuba at Key West’s red, black and yellow Southernmost Point marker that denotes the southernmost land mass in the continental United States. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Oct. 1, 1890, an act of Congress creates Yosemite National Park, paving the way for generations of nature lovers. Yosemite’s natural beauty is immortalized in the stark black-and-white landscape photographs of Ansel Adams (1902-1984).

Games that can challenge the brain Games are as popular as ever. For evidence of that, one need look no further than his or her own smartphone. The number of hours people spend playing games on their smartphones might surprise even the most ardent players. According to the mobile research firm Apptopia, between May and July of 2018, mobile users spent a whopping 3.38 billion hours playing the wildly popular strategy game “Clash of Clans,” making it the most popular smartphone game in the world during that time period. Games might be seen as a way to unwind, but some games can potentially do more than merely provide a way to escape the daily grind. Brain teasers, riddles and crossword puzzles are just some of the types of games that can help people engage and challenge their brains while still providing a bit of escapism. A Healthier Michigan, which is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield Michigan and aims to help locals adopt healthier lifestyles, notes that the following exercises, games and platforms can help men and women challenge their brains in unique ways.

On Oct. 2, 1780, British Major John Andre is hanged as a spy by U.S. military forces in New York. Andre, an accomplice of Benedict Arnold, was captured with incriminating papers in his boot. The papers revealed Arnold’s offer to surrender West Point to the British for a bribe of 20,000 pounds. On Oct. 3, 1863, expressing gratitude for a Union Army victory at Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln announces that the nation will celebrate an official Thanksgiving holiday on Nov. 26, and on the fourth Thursday of every November thereafter.

• BrainHQ: According to Posit Science, which created the system, BrainHQ (www.aarp.brainhq.com) is a system of training the brain that was developed by neuroscientists and other brain experts. The BrainHQ platform includes various brain training exercises with hundreds of levels that can help people improve their brain function, including memory and retention. • Writing in the Stars: Similar to a crossword puzzle, this game provides a list of nine words to users, who must then find the six words that connect to from a six-point star before they can move on the next level. Available at www.happy-neuron.com, Writing in the Stars aims to help users improve their logical reasoning. • Private Eye: With a goal of helping users improve their focused attention and concentration, Private Eye (www.happy-neuron.com) asks players to peruse a grid full of intricate layers and symbols in an effort to find the item that does not belong. • Braingle: With more than 200,000 members, Braingle (www. braingle.com) is a popular online community where users can go to access brain teasers, trivia quizzes, IQ tests, and more. Users even rank the games, allowing novices to find games that might help them hone certain skills or ease their way into challenging their brains with games. Millions of people across the globe play games every day. Though players often play games to have fun, they might be helping their brains without even knowing it. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Turkey is often overshadow ed by other meats in refrigerated display cases, but it remains an excellent source of protein in a low -fat package. A typical 3.4- to four-ounce serving of skinless turkey breast (about the size of a deck of cards) contains around 30 grams of protein, providing about 65 percent of the average person’s recommended daily allotment of protein. Protein helps the body feel full and serves many essential functions in the body. Proteins regulate the entry of nutrients through cell w alls, help the body grow and help it to generate antibodies that fight against illness.

The time of the falling leaves has come again. Once more in our morning walk we tread upon carpets of gold and crimson, of brown and bronze, woven by the winds or the rains out of these delicate textures while we slept. How beautifully the leaves grow old! How full of light and color are their last days! There are exceptions, of course. The leaves of most of the fruit-trees fade and wither and fall ingloriously. They bequeath their heritage of color to their fruit. Upon it they lavish the hues which other trees lavish upon their leaves....

But in October what a feast to the eye our woods and groves present! The whole body of the air seems enriched by their calm, slow radiance. They are giving back the light they have been absorbing from the sun all summer. ~John Burroughs, “The Falling Leaves,” Under the Maples

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor. Little Helpers of Rochester Teaches Compassion to Children By Amanda Dudek In 2012, Tran Bui Smith, a Vietnamese refugee who came to the United States in 1975, moved to Rochester and started a new chapter of her group, Little Helpers. When she moved again in 2015 – this time to Atlanta, Georgia – she left Little Helpers of Rochester (LHR) in the capable hands of friends Amy Bidleman and Kathleen George. The families involved haven’t let her down. Their motto is, “helping children help others,” and that is exactly what they do in Rochester and its surrounding communities. A family volunteer group, LHR holds monthly service projects for children of all ages. “The program is designed to help young people understand the value of volunteering, recognize their blessings, broaden their perspective and feel that sense of accomplishment from lending a helping hand,” said Bidleman and George. “We want to raise confident children for whom giving back is a normal part of their lives.” “My family and I have been volunteering since 2012,” said George. “Amy and I took this summer off to recharge. Now, we are reviving things. We have a new community of families, and we are looking forward to new energy and new ideas.” George experienced the support of Little Helpers firsthand when her son Trevor of Trevor’s Toes and Tushies tragically passed away in 2014. “Helping others helped bring peace to their family, especially knowing how much Trevor enjoyed the kindness projects,” said George. While many participating families may not face such tragedy, George believes they too can benefit. “These kids get to experience giving back to the community in a fun way,” she said. “When they see their parents make it a priority, they do so, as well, and teach it to their own kids.” To George, it is important that her children see how other people live and understand that the world isn’t Utopia. She hopes this is eyeopening and will give them a greater appreciation for what they have. Bidleman agrees.

Little Helpers of Rochester supports Project Linus!

“I want my children to understand the value of volunteering and giving back,” she said. “There is a world outside of their own. We don’t live in a bubble. There is so much good we can do for others.” Bidleman explained that her family joined Little Helpers when they were feeling pulled in many different directions. “Little Helpers has brought our family even closer.” “We love the service projects and have so much fun together,” she said. Little Helpers Rochester completes several projects each year. “We visit the elderly and make crafts with them,” said George and Bidleman. “We have made blankets with the Linus program, worked with food pantries, packed military boxes, collected utensils for homeless shelters, adopted families in need and supported the Salvation Army. We collect for Pencils and Paper, a group that

provides school supplies for teachers. We hold a lemonade stand each year for a person or group.” “We collect socks and underwear for Trevor’s Toes and Tushies, a 501c3 we started before Trevor’s passing,” said George. “Also, every year for 9/11, we show our appreciation for first responders in our area. That was the first project in which my children participated.” “We also collect warm clothing during the winter months,” Bidleman noted. “We are always in need of winter coats.” Trevor George holding a lemonade stand sign for a cause! “The size of the project doesn’t matter,” shared George. Bidleman concurred. “During the smaller projects, there is often time for more meaningful discussion, and the children learn more.” This is truly one of the group’s primary goals. “We are so encouraged when these children grow as people and when they do other projects,” shared George. “My children are more comfortable around the elderly than I was at their ages, and I feel that is because we spend time with the elderly.” “My children are both very shy, but as a family, we have had to learn to come out of our shell and embrace others, especially those in need,” said Bidleman. Little Helpers Rochester is making a difference. “We are becoming known as a resource, and social workers have stated contacting us,” said Bidleman. “We also hear back from groups like Blue Star Mothers and those at Pencils and Paper. They are so appreciative.” “Sometimes when you see the sadness or hatred in the world, you wonder if any of this matters, but it does,” added George. “Little Helpers really is making a big difference.” “Our October event is collecting socks and underwear for Trevor’s Toes & Tushies from MidSeptember through the end of October,” said George. “Those interested should bring donations to Penfield Community Center on October 20th from 2:30pm – 4:30pm. The Community Center is located at 1985 Baird Road, Penfield NY 14526. We would love it if you could wear superhero shirts/outfits and mismatched socks, which were Trevor’s trademarks.” For more information, visit our Little Helpers of Rochester page on Facebook. RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts.

We are looking for a Part-Time Temporary

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

Keywords, phrasing, formatting, and having the right skills for the job can ensure a résume is seen by a recruiter, and perhaps even lead to a new career.

A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire.
