Practice self-control in all aspects of life. Some researchers believe that the self-control necessary to help people maintain their resolutions is like a muscle that needs to be exercised. When selfcontrol is revved up across many different activities, it’s easy to realize one particular resolution. For example, in an experiment at the University of Albany, researchers asked 122 smokers who were trying to quit to practice extra self-control for two weeks, either by avoiding sweets or by squeezing on a grip strengthener for as long as they could twice a day. Twenty-seven percent of those who were diligent about practicing their self-control exercise successfully kicked their cigarette habit in the following month, compared with just 12 percent of volunteers who didn’t maximize self-control.
REMODELING HOW TO CUT COSTS ON HOME RENOVATIONS Choose midgrade materials: Certain materials may be all the rage but they come with a higher price tag. Angi reports that granite counters could be $60 to $100 per square foot. However, a composite or laminate that looks like granite and wears well may be $10 to 40 per square foot. Figure out where you can choose middle-of-the-road materials for maximum value.

One of the easiest ways to reduce the risk of falls is to improve lighting around the home. The National Institutes of Health state that adequate lighting is important at entrances to the home, stairways, hallways, and other frequently traversed areas. Make sure lighting fixtures are using the highest wattage light bulb allowed. Artificial lighting sources become even more vital in fall and autumn, when natural light is less abundant in a home. In addition, install lighting outdoors by the front door, over the garage and where garbage pails are stored to facilitate safe passage.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had weight-loss surgery, specifically an adjustable lap band that was revised to a gastric sleeve in 2018. I have been given and read conflicting recommendations regarding the use of NSAIDs following these procedures. I have read that taking a low dose (400 mg) is considered safe. I have also read and been told to take the children’s liquid form at an adult dosage rather than the tablets. I am a 57-year-old female. I have largely avoided taking NSAIDs for years, but I have developed osteoarthritis and find that I am taking them more often (400 mg once daily, one to two times a week at most). I do ensure that I take them with food and also take a Pepcid whenever I take ibuprofen. -- A.W. ANSWER: There are several types of weight-loss (bariatric) surgery, and the best evidence that I found among those who had a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass shows up to a 70% increase in the relative risk of developing peptic ulcers after surgery. This sounds pretty terrible, but it actually means that in an average time span of four years after surgery, 1.4% of people who didn’t take any NSAIDs got an ulcer, while 2.4% of the group that had the greatest amount of NSAID use developed an ulcer. However, the same study showed that only 0.2% of patients who underwent a sleeve gastrectomy developed an ulcer, and the use of NSAIDs did not significantly increase this number. Finally, other studies have shown that medicines like famotidine (Pepcid) reduce the risk of ulcers by about half when used long-term. NSAIDs always have risks, but for a person with a gastric sleeve, the risks of lowdose ibuprofen are modest and need to be weighed against the benefits for a person’s quality of life.
KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

A Journey of Faith and Service: The Story of Pastor Greg Falco BY CHELSIE WELLS
G
reg Falco, lead pastor of Elim Life Church in Lima, embarked on his journey of faith with a deep understanding of the human condition and a fervent love for Jesus. His decision to become a pastor was grounded in the foundational belief that every person is created to know and be loved by God, but the choices we make often separate us from Him. Greg’s passion for sharing the transformative message of Jesus became the driving force behind his call to ministry. From an early age, Greg’s parents played a pivotal role in shaping his Christian identity. His mother exhibited a unique connection with God, fostering an active relationship through prayer, Bible reading, and a lifestyle marked by peace. It was this environment that led Greg, at the age of 5 or 6, to invite Jesus into his life, setting the course for his lifelong journey of faith. As a junior in high school, God spoke to Greg’s heart, calling him to become a pastor. Despite initial reservations, a transformative prayer session with a local pastor shifted Greg’s perspective. What began as reluctance transformed into an unshakeable desire to dedicate his life to guiding a congregation and leading them to know Jesus intimately. Greg’s approach to studying the Bible reflects his dual commitment to pastoral responsibilities and personal growth. For his pastoral role, he engages in prayerful reading, using various translations and conducting deeper studies with commentaries and tools to extract timeless truths. Personally, he embraces devotional readings on the YouVersion app, selecting studies that provide a logical progression through the Bible. Since October 2002, Greg has served in various pastoral capacities, including working with children, youth, and as a worship leader before assuming the role of lead pastor. His vision for Elim Life Church extends beyond the confines of a physical building; he envisions a community where people experience the love of Jesus and actively share it with others. Pastors, according to Greg, are spiritual guides, aiding their congregations in understanding the Bible’s application in daily life. They model lives of integrity, but their paramount role is to facilitate a genuine relationship with Jesus, guiding individuals to know God for themselves and grow in their faith. Reflecting on his ministry experiences, Greg finds joy in witnessing lives transformed and individuals healed by the power of God. Challenges emerge when people, once part of the ministry, walk away from their faith or when families navigate painful losses. These contrasting experiences shape Greg’s pastoral journey, reinforcing his reliance on God’s strength.
support, and challenges from these relationships have contributed to his spiritual growth and understanding of the Bible. Greg acknowledges the importance of surrounding himself with a community that fosters love, acceptance, and growth. Greg’s preaching style is characterized by a desire to make the Bible come alive, providing practical insights for everyday living. He incorporates transparency, Greg and Melanie Falco humor, and authenticity, reflecting his approachable personality. When asked about his beliefs, Greg emphasizes the centrality of Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life, echoing John 14:6. He holds a Biblical worldview, finding it the most logical and accurate lens through which to interpret the world. Greg advocates for the preciousness of every life and the need for love and care for all. Amid the myriad of Bible passages that resonate with Greg, his favorites include Galatians 2:20, Romans 5:8, Romans 10:910, Philippians 4:6-7, and Romans 8:28. The stories of Jesus, David, and the book of Acts also hold special significance in his spiritual journey. Greg’s journey to becoming a pastor involved practical training, mentorship, and education, including earning a master’s degree in organizational leadership. His vision for Elim Life Church is to impact the local community and the world for Jesus, fostering an environment where people experience and share the love of Christ. Elim Life Church serves the community through individual acts of kindness, hosting conferences and community events, supporting local ministries, engaging in international outreach, offering small groups for spiritual and practical growth, and providing ministries for youth and children. Pastor Greg Falco’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of faith, shaped by love, commitment, and a profound desire to share the message of Jesus. His unique experiences, combined with a genuine heart for serving others, make his pastoral journey both inspiring and impactful.
The impact of Greg’s faith extends into every facet of his life, transcending the notion of religion as a set of rules. Instead, his faith influences every decision, parenting choice, and leadership action, guided by a constant commitment to understanding God’s will.

Here’s a Tip • Sources who know say that if you drop a marble (clean glass) in your tea kettle, it will prevent it from scaling. • Like to use paper towels to dry your clean hands? Set them aside to dry, then you can use them for cleaning with glass cleaner or other solutions. • Use a shower curtain cut or folded in half under baby’s highchair to make cleaning up the floor easier. * Air-popped popcorn is better for you and healthier. If you have an air popper, you’ll also have a jar of popcorn kernels. Keep them in the refrigerator or even the freezer. You can use them straight from the fridge, and the bonus is that you’ll have less unpopped kernels and bigger, fluffier popcorn. -- E.M. in Wisconsin (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR Start small when picking resolutions. Rather than resolving to lose 50 pounds, start with a more manageable goal, such as losing 10 pounds. When you reach the goal, you will feel more confident and then you can up the ante.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Keep track of your progress. Keep a resolutions journal or start a blog that allows you to write about your efforts. If your goal is to pay down debt, make a spreadsheet that tracks your progress. That spreadsheet might be more motivational than simply seeing a loan or credit card balance gradually reduce on your monthly statement. Writing about your trials and errors can help others and also provide a great way for you to explore your approach and tinker with it to ensure your ultimate success.

4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year. Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location.
Magic Maze THE SAME SINGULAR AND PLURAL
In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day. Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible. Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing. 1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias. 2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either. 3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change. 4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

Huge Thank You I stopped at Food Mart to pick up a couple of things on my way to a get together, and lost my debit card. Luckily I was able to pay for my items another way, but I was frantic about losing my card. Some good samaritan found it and left it at the office. There really are good people in the world! Thank you so much.

Hooray for the Medical Aftercare by Rochester Regional Health Elizabeth Browning’s poem “How Do I Love Thee” was written in 1850 as a love poem for another person. I want to share the ways I love what Rochester Regional Health (RRH) has done to help my wife Dianne (81) since a recent six-day stay at Rochester General Hospital for heart-related issues. Since coming home from the hospital, the follow-up care by RRH has been Tremendous. RRH provided a slew of medical equipment, such as a blood pressure device, oxygen meter reader, great scale commode, and two four-prong walkers for use upstairs and downstairs in our home. RRH has provided me a Telemedicine number to call in her vitals. RRH provided a 24/7 nurse contact for medical issues. There have been periodic visits of physical therapists, nurses, and a social worker. RRH has been God-sent with all the follow-up being provided for Dianne, my dear wife of 59 years. So, “How Do I Love RRH?” A whole lot and Thank You from the bottom of my heart. Love, Joe and Dianne Borzelliere
Driving With A Dog In Your Lap Driving under the influence of drugs/ alcohol, speeding, running stop lights/ signs are several illegal potentials that could cause serious harm to a driver or passengers or the same to those in another vehicle. PLEASE help me understand why drivers can navigate one handed while a dog sits in their lap? Driving with a dog in your lap may impede the proper functioning of an air bag/seat belt if in a collision, which may be a significant hazard to the dog, the driver and/or others in the vehicle. PLEASE tell these reckless drivers they’re a danger to themselves, their pets and others. Wake up and keep your eyes on the road and not your darn dog!

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Kennel or Sitter? Traveling Owner Can’t Decide
Puzzle Answers This Week
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am traveling for business in a few days and will be gone for just over a week. Because I can’t bring my dog Jasper with me, I’m trying to decide whether to board him at a nearby kennel or hire a dog-sitter instead. I’m worried about him contracting that respiratory illness that has been affecting dogs lately. What’s your recommendation? -- Todd G., via email DEAR TODD: Both of those options are fine -- as long as you take a few minutes to investigate both the kennel and interview the dog-sitter. Schedule a tour of the kennel facility so you can see the conditions Jasper will live in and talk to the staff. Has the kennel had any dogs develop kennel cough or other transmitted viruses recently? How often do they disinfect the kennels and play areas? How much exercise do the dogs get? Likewise, interview the dog-sitter in person, or over Zoom. How often will they visit Jasper -- once or twice a day? How often will Jasper get walks and play time? Will Jasper be the only dog being walked, or will he be part of a group of dogs? Is the dog-sitter insured, in case of accidents? Once you’ve decided which caregiver to place Jasper with, be sure they have your contact information in case of emergencies, and details about Jasper’s diet, type of food and medications. Place an article of clothing that has your scent on it in Jasper’s bag so that he is more comfortable whether staying at home or sleeping at the kennel. After you return, keep an eye on Jasper to make sure he’s healthy. If he is coughing or sneezing frequently, has a lot of nasal or eye discharge, and seems lethargic or uninterested in food, take him to the vet for an evaluation.
