Snow tires a w orthy investment Snow tires are particularly helpful for people w ho cannot w ait for roads to be cleared before they begin their days. Look for a new job or fresh income streams. A rising cost of living is a concern for people from all walks of life, but it may be especially concerning for retirees or individuals with costs like childcare that can be hard to pare back. In such instances, individuals can look for new a job or fresh income streams. According to the Q3 2021 CNBC | Momentive Small Business Survey, 50 percent of small business owners say it’s gotten harder to find qualified people to hire compared to a year ago. And nearly one-third of survey respondents indicate they have open roles they have not been able to fill for at least three months. Individuals can explore local employment opportunities in an effort to find a new, more lucrative job that can help them combat a rising cost of living. Others who want to remain in their jobs can look for part-time work to supplement their existing income.

Lima Horses in Crisis BY HARRIETT RUBINS, CEO OF BEGIN AGAIN HORSE RESCUE

W

ho worries about old horses, injured horses, homeless donkeys, neglected equines? Rescues, sanctuaries, and some humane societies, that’s who. Sadly, many of the SPCAs have no facilities or resources for large animals. Winter sees rescues filled to overflowing because a growing number of owners can’t cope with added expenses incurred when pastures run out of grass or vet bills rise. No longer able to care for their horses, they seek help. Begin Again Horse Rescue is one of the organizations that can step in, but it is full beyond capacity. It is now asking for help to find good adopters for each of eight wonderful “companion only” horses, as well as its other residents that are without use limitations. The companion horses may not be rideable, but they have good quality of life, able to spend many happy years as pets or as companions to other horses. Flora an Arabian mare, Rojo an ex-TB racehorse, Karma a draft-x mare, and Perdita a blind pony are good examples. Flora, a beautiful Arabian mare, has a degenerative leg issue that will worsen if ridden. Rojo, an ex-racehorse, has bone chips in his knees and scars from being chased through a wire fence. Karma, a draft mare, had an accident as a baby that resulted in a pelvic fracture long since healed. Perdita is a blind large pony. Pongo is her guide. They need to stay together, a difficult prospect to find. All adopters are required to be within a two-hour radius of Begin Again Horse Rescue. There are others. They come to BAHR broken. We improve their lives, and when they are ready, they need soft landings.

retirement, able to care for them throughout their life. But life changes for people too. Financial changes, divorce, severe illness or even the death of the owner or owner’s spouse are all reasons these horses find their ways to BAHR. One alternative for them may be euthanasia, which in some cases is a Perdita the pony is blind; Pongo is her “seeing eye.” valid and reasonable decision. Other fates the horses may face, if not surrendered, include abandonment and neglect, or to be sent to auction, where they risk being bought for slaughter. Although the USA has banned slaughter within the country, horses are loaded on huge trailers and shipped to Mexico or Canada, often under inhumane conditions. Unrideable horses sent to auction, given away, or sold at low prices are very much at risk of this fate. When surrendered, the owner wants to be assured that his/her horse will be cared for during its 30+ year life. It’s a challenging, but not impossible, task to ensure. While reputable 501 (c-3) Rescues and Sanctuaries like Begin Again Horse Rescue are available, they all have limited resources and space. BAHR is run by volunteers with two parttime employees who provide continuity of care to the animals. It accepts both companion and rideable horses. The unrideable ones might take a year or more to rehabilitate and place. Although Begin Again Horse Rescue is not a sanctuary, it keeps and maintains each equine until a good home is found. That might take years. “We don’t put animals to sleep because we are out of room,” co-founder, Jen Lilly, said. “We are now forced to stop taking in new horses even though we have a waiting list full of horses needing our help. We will keep and maintain our residents until they are placed.”

Beautiful Aurora stood on cement in a dark stall for a year. Her ankles developed ring bone.

Can you help, or do you know someone who can? The Begin Again mission is to help at-risk horses, yet its facility is full. We can’t bring in another horse until some residents are adopted. “Our staff is working as hard as it is able, and we can’t overextend any more than we already are, or we will short-change our residents,” said CEO Harriett Rubins. “These horses are no longer at risk. They are happy and healthy. They just need good homes. So, we need help finding those homes.” Begin Again Horse Rescue, with veterinary guidance, assesses the physical and mental issues of each equine within the first weeks of it entering the program. Staff and volunteers care for them, train them, and help them to get over their fears. Some were taught to do tricks and/or liberty work to keep their minds active and develop bonds with humans. They are kind horses that need little, if any, extra maintenance to keep them comfortable. They are ready for adoption, awaiting forever homes. When a horse can no longer do its job–can no longer race because it is too slow or injured, can no longer carry a rider, can no longer pull a wagon, but still has quality of life, BAHR believes they deserve a caring home. Many owners are committed to their horses through

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Therefore, Begin Again Horse Rescue is asking for your help to place the horses that are ready to be loved and cared for by a family of their own. Through the months of December and January, adoption fees for Companion Only horses are waived, although tax deductible donations to the rescue are still appreciated. “We need to place these many wonderful horses. Please help us so that we can continue our mission. For the moment, we’re on hold,” added Harriett Rubins. Bipolar Disease Takes 4 Different Forms

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

Henrietta

---

20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible for a person to reach the age of 70 and just now be diagnosed with bipolar disorder? Are there degrees of impairment, like with autism -- some worse than others? -- C.S. ANSWER: The hallmark of bipolar disease is mania. “Mania” has a specific meaning in psychiatry: It’s a very elevated mood, associated with high amounts of energy and an inability to think clearly, especially to see the consequences of one’s actions. Some common features of people in a manic episode include an inflated sense of self-worth, distractibility and racing ideas. People can be very talkative and feel little need to sleep. Dangerously, people in a manic phase can spend large amounts of money and have many sexual indiscretions. All diseases have a spectrum of severity, and some are quite wide. With bipolar disease in particular, however, there are four distinct forms of the disease. Bipolar I is the classic form, once called “manic depressive illness,” where people have episodes of mania, alternating with periods of normal behavior or depression. People with Bipolar II have depressive episodes and some “hypomanic” episodes: periods of high energy (and sometimes profound productivity), usually without the negative aspects of the “full” manic episode. Cyclothymia is a rapid cycling between hypomania and mild depression. There is a fourth type, “unspecified,” where people have abnormal mood elevations but don’t meet criteria for the other types. Bipolar disease usually has its onset in early adulthood, but sometimes in teens or even childhood. However, I have rarely seen bipolar disease diagnosed in someone as old as 70. It isn’t always clear whether the disease is just manifesting that late, or whether it has been around for many years, but compensated for by the person. Some people don’t interact with a lot of family or friends, and manic or hypomanic episodes might be missed. It’s possible the 70-year-old in question has a quite mild form. Treatment for bipolar disorder can dramatically improve the quality of life of the person and of the family and friends affected by the illness.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Racoon eyes may be a side effect of forgetting to remove mascara and other eye makeup before retiring for bed. In such instances, dark eye circles are easily remedied with cleaning pads. For those whose dark circles can’t be swept away with soap and water, dark, puffy eyes can be a cause for embarrassment or concern. Dark circles under the eyes may be a byproduct of various circumstances. Getting to the root of the problem can help women (and men) look more awake and fresh.

LIVING WITH ATRIAL FIBRILLATION

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Looking Out for No. 1

Depending on where you live, you might be required to delay surgery because the hospital is full of COVID patients. That’s the news that’s spreading around the country. It gets worse. If you have an emergency, the ambulance might be a long time in coming because they don’t have enough EMTs, or they might have to come from an adjacent town. Once you get to the hospital, you might be treated in a hallway because no exam rooms are open. The biggest issues to keep us from needing medical attention are physical safety and health. I’ve gone around my house to look at every inch of floor space to be sure there’s nothing that I could possibly trip on. I moved the laundry basket to the closet instead of leaving it near a path where I walk. In the living room I changed one frequently used lamp from a 50-75-100 watt bulb to one that brightens things up with 75-100-150 watts. I removed two small throw rugs ... just got rid of them. Other things might seem small, but really aren’t. I found a balance class on YouTube and I’m following along every other day. I also found several videos on improving flexibility and stretching. When it comes to diet, I made a quick call to my doctor’s office and inquired about vitamins. I was told that a low-dose vitamin C would be appropriate three times a week, and to add an orange to my diet the other days. Ask your doctor before you do this. As much as I hate not being able to select my own items, I’ve gone back to picking up grocery orders at curbside to stay out of stores. It’s up to us to take care of ourselves. That’s the bottom line when it comes to our health and safety. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds. Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators.

RESOLVE TO WEAR CLOTHES THAT FIT IN THE YEAR AHEAD Bra measurements are hard to come by, no doubt thanks in part to the nature of getting measured in such an intimate area of the body. But considering undergarments set the foundation for all clothing worn on top, this is one of the more important measurements to verify. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Generally, for every degree you lower your thermostat during heating season, you reduce your energy costs by 3%. * Just in time for soup season (and my new year’s resolutions), here’s a great fat swap: Drain and rinse 2 cups of white beans and puree with a cup of no-sodium vegetable broth. You can use this as a thickener in place of heavy cream for soups and stews. -- JoAnn * To keep snow off your windshield, use a flannel-backed tablecloth stretched to cover both windshield and wipers. Put it flannel-side to the glass. Then you’ll be able to lift it (and the snow) off your windshield to drive. * Wondering what winter fruits and vegetables are in season? Here’s a sampling: apples, dates and pears, as well as citrus, like grapefruit, oranges and tangerines. For vegetables, consider endive, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, kale, leeks, mushrooms, parsnips, radicchio, rutabagas, sweet potatoes, turnips, yams and winter squash. * “Want to keep your pants from creasing on the hanger? Grab an empty paper-towel tube and slit it down the side. When you slip it over the bottom of the hanger, it creates a wide curve for the pants to lie across, and no more crease!” -- M.U. in Colorado * Remember that as temperatures drop and layers of clothing increase, children in a car seat need special consideration. Remove heavy coats before strapping in a small child or baby. Winter wear can compress during an accident, and it interferes with the straps.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Dog Balks at Wheelchair DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 9-yearold Shih Tzu “Mitzi” developed a hip problem due to an injury she suffered when much younger (she was a rescue). It’s become almost impossible for her to walk, and her veterinarian recommended she start using a “wheelie” harness to get around. The problem: Mitzi will not use the harness. It’s a struggle to get her into it, and then she just kind of lays there and whimpers once she’s in it. How can I get her to adjust to the harness? -- Claude C., Atlanta DEAR CLAUDE: You’ll need to try a couple of things: check the fit of the harness, and use some gentle encouragement (ahem, treats) to help Mitzi. According to Eddie’s Wheels, which designs wheelchairs and support devices for pets, dogs that still have feeling or some mobility in their hind legs sometimes have more trouble adjusting to wheelchairs than dogs whose hind legs are paralyzed. Also, a poorly fitted wheelchair can cause a dog to feel uncomfortable in the harness. So, check the fit of the wheelchair based on the manufacturer’s recommendations. If Mitzi’s wheelie allows her back legs to touch the ground, make sure that she can do so. This may alleviate her anxiety. If her back seems hunched, make sure the straps are at the correct length so she’s comfortable. If her back sags in the harness, she may need more support. And make sure her backside isn’t lifted into the air; this can cause strain on her front legs. Once the fit is OK, give Mitzi lots of encouragement as you help her into the harness each day. Then, as she progresses, give her a reward at each step: when she first stands up in the harness, when she takes her first step, and so on. Always make it a positive experience, until she gets the hang of her new wheels. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOMETOWN PHOTOS Confused Why are we even talking about paying off college debts? They signed for the loan, then they should pay off their loan. Here’s a better idea: how about paying off medical debts instead, especially for cancer patients? School loans are a choice, cancer is not. If this administration wants to patronize and buy votes here’s a better way to earn them.

S E V RA Hometown People are Awesome We at the Livonia Historical Society would like to express our sincere appreciation to Wanda’s Restaurant, Valarie Singleton, and all of the ladies and gentlemen who baked goods, purchased baked goods and supported us during our Holiday Bake Sale. You know we could not have done it without all of you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We can all be grateful for living in the Town of Livonia, Community Support & Spirit is great. Thank you!

Thank you, Tammy! Thank you to Tammy at Gourmet Goodies in Victor for always welcoming me and my little ones with a big smile when we swing by after school for a croissant! When we stopped in for our Christmas cookies, you even had a present for my toddler. He is still talking to everyone about the trucks Tammy gave him! We can’t wait to stop by the new location this spring, but we will miss you until then!

Memories I thought of this year, 2021,a lot; the loss of people you love that are not here, and the appreciation of others who are here. – The Mother

The best present Instead of spending all your time running around, looking for the toy your child wants, why not give them the best present ever: your time? With all the problems out in the world today such as the shortages of supplies, Covid-19 and its mutations, and all of the environmental disasters, we could better use this time to remember what the season is all about and put Christ back into Christmas. Road work Again, [local road] is closed in the same location by the same dip with no word when--if ever--it will be repaired. Why am I paying taxes in this town? It has been 35+ years that I have been here. I curse the day that I bought this property. It seems like the only solution is to move out of [local town] and New York State. Death of a senator The death of former Senator from Kansas, Robert Dole, was a sad day for the United States. It’s a shame that all politicians aren’t like Senator Dole in that he loved his country and put it ahead of his political party. He knew how to work together with his opponents to come up with a solution that would best serve the country as a whole. It may be too late for most of us to say thank you to him, but all politicians can still say thanks by following his lead in putting the welfare of our country ahead of their political party. Drink, Drive & Toss I’m so disgusted with my neighbors or the users of my rural, partially-seasonal and dead-end road. As I walk my dogs and constantly pick up your garbage, “the beer can bandit” and “the tea tosser,” among others, are weekly and randomly tossing beer cans, tea containers, and other containers out of their vehicles’ windows. They apparently continue to drink and toss while driving down this road. It is so disheartening that these selfish people have no regard for the environment or for others.

EXPLORING THE ORIGINS OF NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS For millenia, people around the world have commemorated the arrival of a new calendar year by adhering to various traditions. Once such tradition is making resolutions for the year ahead. Resolutions are promises to oneself geared around personal fulfillment and betterment. Resolutions are widely practiced, but some people may not understand the origins of New Year’s resolutions and why they have become the norm. Some historians tie the practice of making resolutions to the ancient Babylonians. More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year in March rather than January. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated. An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king. Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts. Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius). Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another. Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire. Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year. Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times. During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry. Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

Be mindful of decorum. The internet is a largely informal “place,” but professionals should be mindful of decorum when networking online. Resist the temptation to use shorthand, slang or less formal language when contacting other professionals, as doing so can make you appear unprofessional. In addition, avoid making potentially controversial or contentious comments on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR Set up an accountability system. Institute a rewards system for your success. You might even use a monetary system as a double-bonus. When you stick to a resolution over a predetermined period, put a dollar in a jar. If you fall off course, take a dollar away. Find the incentive that works for you.
