This means ensuring there is enough windshield wiper fluid in the car and that it is a product that will not freeze. Wiper blades can freeze and crack in the winter. Older blades may be more susceptible to damage. It’s a worthy investment to replace existing wiper blades at the start of each winter. When vehicles are parked, pull the wipers off of the windshield to safeguard them from sticking and cracking.

DID YOU KNOW? Though more buyers may prefer to lease new vehicles over preowned vehicles, some prospective lessees consider leasing preowned automobiles. According to the automotive resource Edmunds.com, many dealerships restrict their preowned lease inventory to vehicles that are less than four years old and have fewer than 48,000 miles. In addition, dealerships may only allow potential preowned lessees to lease vehicles that have been certified. Some drivers may prefer leasing preowned vehicles because the cost to do so can be considerably less than the cost to lease brand new vehicles. Those costs are less for various reasons, including the preowned vehicle having a lower value and lower rate of depreciation than a brand new car or truck. Though many dealerships are willing to lease preowned vehicles, prospective lessees may find that more dealerships prefer leasing brand new vehicles than used models. Still, for potential lessees who intend to buy their vehicles at the end of their leases, preowned leases may make the best fit, as preowned leased vehicles will likely cost considerably less than to purchase when the lease expires than vehicles that were leased brand new.

Look for this weekly column! Your questions answered by the local Cornell experts.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County Why did my hydrangea not flower? Usually, it is because of poor pruning by humans or by Mother Nature. I have learned it is best to ask for more information before I give a complete answer. “Did you receive this hydrangea as a gift for Easter or Mother’s Day? Did it have pretty plastic or foil paper around the pot?” If so, the plant may be a florist hydrangea, and it is simply not hardy enough for our area. Mother Nature freezes the flower buds each year destroying the future flower.

Usually, these plants are big-leaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla). Most varieties bloom on old wood, i.e., wood that grew and produced flower buds during the previous year. Therefore, early, or late freezes or bitter winters may damage the flower buds. The other reason is pruning at the wrong time. If you cut back a hydrangea between the fall and early spring, you have trimmed off the future flower because it blooms on old wood. For further information, go to http://ccelivingstoncounty.org/

SEND YOUR QUESTIONS TO OUR EXPERTS! Your question(s) will be answered directly & may be featured in our column! Ask them today at: GVPENNYSAVER. COM/GARDEN

S E V RA No grapes for dogs! Thanks to the staff at York Animal Hospital for saving our lab who ate grapes off the vine! Dr. Morgan, Kristi, and Jen C. took such great care of our baby. We can’t thank you enough! - Scout’s Mom and Dad

Going out of his way A thank you to the driver who went out of his way at a hotel I was staying at. When asked if he could drive me to a certain destination, he said he was sorry, and that it was beyond where they were allowed to go with their company van. However, after looking around and determining he wasn’t busy, he said to me, “Let’s go!” We hear all the time about people going the extra mile for their customers. Thanks for doing so!

S T N RA

Kindness matters! I have worked about 27 years in this town where my husband grew up. How happy we all were when my daughter, her husband and their 6-year-old daughter bought a home here! My granddaughter was homeschooled last year and hasn’t played with other kids in a long time. She is very bright, happy, friendly, energetic, kind, and eager without a mean bone in her body. This last weekend, I took her to the park. A little girl and her brother came to play. My granddaughter asked to play with them. They ran away, ignoring her each time she followed. Thinking they did not like her, she cried, heartbroken. So, we went to a neighboring playground, but there, another little girl and her brother kept running away. My granddaughter said, “Little girl, little girl…can I talk to you please? I haven’t had any little kids to play with in a long, long time and I want to know if……” The little girl ran away. “Little girl, can I please talk to you?” No response. I hugged my granddaughter as she started crying, and that little girl laughed at us. The welcome my granddaughter got here makes me cry. She starts school for the first time next week and is so excited to “meet some friends.” I pray she gets a classroom with warm, receptive, friendly children who will befriend this wonderful little girl with a big heart.

Social Security Cap Each week, I see comments regarding Social Security. How many of you realize there is a wage-base cap? According to IRS Topic 751 for earnings in 2021, this base is $142,800. Which means that any earnings over this amount are not subject to Social Security withholdings. If your neighbor earns $250,000, only the first $142,800 is subject to Social Security withholdings. That also means that Jeff Bezos pays on only the first $142,800. Also, Donald Trump, Bill Gates, Lady Gaga, George Clooney, Mark Zuckerberg, and the list goes on, only pay on the first $142,800 of income. The powers that be making the decision on the wage-base cap, I am sure, make considerably more than this cap. I’m certain there is nothing we little people can do to change this unfair practice, but it seems a significant raise in this cap could go a long way to making Social Security self-sustaining for years and years into the future. Hero or villain? It is amazing to watch the people who, just a year ago, praised healthcare workers as heroes be the same who are now condemning them as villains for not wanting the COVID vaccine. There were so many signs that praised them. Now, they are the enemy?

Service HVAC systems It’s important to ensure that heating systems are working properly prior to the cold-weather season. It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach dangerously low temperatures without adequate heat. Homeowners should schedule annual checkups of furnaces and hot water heaters. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter and make sure all thermostats are working properly.

TREE SERVICES

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Holiday Gift Shortages If you will have holiday shopping to do this year, you need to get started on it now. Manufacturers and store owners are saying there will be shortages. There are labor problems, problems with container ships that can’t be offloaded in ports, trucks that can’t deliver the goods, material supply-chain problems ... you get the picture. Here are two suggestions to keep gift-buying simpler this year: toys and books. TOYS -- If you have small children to buy for, shop now. Manufacturers of many of the most popular toys are saying that they’ve seen shortages of required materials on a global scale. Try local toy stores for items they have in stock now. BOOKS -- Call your library and ask for age-appropriate suggestions for young children. Then, list in hand, call your local bookstore. Ask if they have in stock what you need. If you can actually go to the store and pick up the books curbside, you’re ahead of the game. Otherwise try ordering online, but look for things already in stock. For teens and adults, consider buying them a Kindle, an e-book reader available on Amazon. (I’ve had three different versions of Kindle since 2016 and truly appreciate the way I can order a book and have it appear on my e-reader within minutes.) A new Kindle, a $15 case and a $50 gift certificate for e-books would be welcome gifts for readers. Check the delivery dates of the various Kindle colors. Some are available immediately; others aren’t. When it comes to online shopping, experts advise ordering items that are as close to home as possible, not across oceans. Beware of local shipping delays as well. Gone are the days of always receiving boxes in just a few days. If you order something online, track it, and follow up with a phone call if necessary. Local Eagle Scout to Build Lima Community Garden BY AMANDA K. DUDEK

W

e often hear that today’s youth are too distracted by rapidly advancing technology and a plethora of electronic devices to notice the world around them. While this may be true of some, Eagle Scout John Ryan Samarra is an inspiring example of a young person who not only cares about those in need but who actively seeks to make a difference in his community, as well. Moved by those experiencing food insecurity as well as his desire to bring neighbors together, John Ryan has chosen to establish Lima Community Garden as his Eagle Scout project. A member of Troop 105 in Mendon, John Ryan found inspiration for his project where so many great ideas start: in the kitchen talking with his mom. The pair were casually discussing the possibility of a local grocery store which would sell local products, and the conversation led to the concept of a community garden. For John Ryan, it was a lightbulb moment. “I realized I could do that as my Eagle Scout project because it was something I was really excited about,” he recalled. Deciding to design the project for his hometown, John Ryan began discussing his plans with community members and members of the Lima Village Board and the Lima Parks Commission. “They all seemed on board with it, and some of them have even expressed interest in having a plot of their own or helping out,” he said, thankful to be able to serve his hometown. “I grew up here for most of my life,” John Ryan shared. “I know a great number of people in Lima, and we are good friends. Part of the reason this project matters so much to me is that over the last couple of years, I have seen so much division. I want the community garden to be a positive influence that brings people together.”

John Ryan explained that his Eagle Scout project is just the beginning, laying the groundJohn Ryan Samarra visits the work for what he hopes will be an Pittsford Community Garden as ongoing community endeavor. he plans his garden project! “My Eagle Scout project has to be completed by my 18th birthday in December, so the goal is to build the garden’s infrastructure as well as a pest-preventing fence around it,” he said. “We are planning 24, 10 x 5 foot garden plots with a border around each and mulched paths in between to be located at Mark Tubbs Memorial Park in Lima.” After these pieces are finished, John Ryan’s project will be complete, but he has a greater vision for this garden. “I hope to get a bunch of Eagle Scouts together to plant on some of the plots and to perhaps even start a Lima Community Garden Club. I would like it to continue even if I move away.”

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

(Right) This pleasant stretch of land in Matt Tubbs Memorial Park is the garden’s future home!

How can area neighbors participate in this exciting, new garden? It is as easy as the click of a mouse! “Members of the community who would like to reserve a plot should email us at limacommunitygarden@gmail.com,” said John Ryan. “They will be able to claim their plot where they can grow whatever they like, and they will be responsible for its upkeep. We do ask that each grower donate a certain amount of the produce they grow to a local food bank, and we will likely have restrictions on pesticide use.” Who can reserve a plot? The possibilities are nearly endless! “A plot can belong to almost anyone: a person, a family, a garden club, a local restaurant, a 2nd grade class…the important thing is that it will be grown by people in the community for people in the community. Not only will we be helping neighbors in need with delicious local produce, but by reducing the need for shipped produce, we will be more environmentally friendly, too.”

With this unity, John Ryan believes the community can make a huge impact on local hunger. “The Lima Community Garden would donate a decent amount of food to charity through local food banks,” he explained. “It would bring people together to feed our community and support those fighting food insecurity.”

John Ryan is currently using a GoFundMe to raise funds for necessary project materials. “Our goal is based on my estimated costs if the community garden does not receive any donated tools and materials,” he said. “Our Facebook post has only been up for a few days (Facebook.com/LimaGarden), and people are already expressing interest and asking questions. I am excited for how this garden will bring our community together!”

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

Celebrating 20 Years

By Keith Roach, M.D.

Husband Is Always Tired

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband is tired all the time. He functions, but frequently has to sit to recoup his energy, even after a shower. He is diabetic and has been for over 10 years. He does not take insulin and manages to keep his A1C within 7.1 to 6.9. He weighs 207 pounds, and he’s 6 feet, 1 inch tall and 75 years old. His bloodwork always comes back normal, and a nuclear stress test came back negative. We have discussed this chronic fatigue with our family doctor. His only explanation is possibly low testosterone (the low end of normal). We know that some if not all of his medications list fatigue as a side effect, but we cannot persuade our doctor to do further tests. My husband does have an appointment with a cardiologist in May for a consultation and any suggestions, and also a checkup in six months with our family doctor. My concern is his medications and the fact that they are generic. I have read many stories about generic drugs and problems with their effectiveness. -- J.C. ANSWER: Fatigue, which is the sensation of feeling tired, is a nonspecific symptom and a complaint that’s commonly heard by general doctors. It can be related to many diseases, as disparate as multiple sclerosis to heart failure, anemia to depression, and chronic infection to sleep disturbances. However, your husband notes a severe intolerance to exertion, which makes me suspect systemic exertion intolerance disorder, also called myalgic encephalomyelitis or chronic fatigue syndrome. Poor sleep, difficulty thinking or concentrating, and having worse symptoms with standing also go along with this diagnosis. There is yet no lab test for confirmation. The diagnosis is made after considering other causes, and testing for those that make sense after a careful history and exam. Diabetes, when not well controlled, may lead to chronic fatigue. I’m not so concerned with generic medications as I am about too many or the wrong ones, so a careful review of medications is appropriate. I have previously recommended a graded exercise program for this condition; however, the study that led to this recommendation had several significant issues; many people will actually have worsening of their post-exercise fatigue, so exercise must be used very cautiously and on an individualized basis. Cognitive behavioral therapy has had some benefit, but we desperately need better treatments. ***

BREAST CANCER TREATMENT Most patients with breast cancer have surgery to remove the cancer. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is the removal of the sentinel lymph node during surgery. The sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node to receive lymphatic drainage from a tumor. It is the first lymph node where the cancer is likely to spread. A radioactive substance and/or blue dye is injected near the tumor. The substance or dye flows through the lymph ducts to the lymph nodes. The first lymph node to receive the substance or dye is removed. A pathologist views the tissue under a microscope to look for cancer cells. After the sentinel lymph node biopsy, the surgeon removes the tumor using breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy. If cancer cells were not found in the sentinel lymph node, it may not be necessary to remove more lymph nodes. If cancer cells were found, more lymph nodes will be removed through a separate incision. This is called a lymph node dissection. Types of surgery include the following: • Breast-conserving surgery is an operation to remove the cancer and some normal tissue around it, but not the breast itself. Part of the chest wall lining may also be removed if the cancer is near it. This type of surgery may also be called lumpectomy, partial mastectomy, segmental mastectomy, quadrantectomy, or breast-sparing surgery. • Total mastectomy: Surgery to remove the whole breast that has cancer. This procedure is also called a simple mastectomy. Some of the lymph nodes under the arm may be removed and checked for cancer. This may be done at the same time as the breast surgery or after. This is done through a separate incision. • Modified radical mastectomy: Surgery to remove the whole breast that has cancer, many of the lymph nodes under the arm, the lining over the chest muscles, and sometimes, part of the chest wall muscles. Chemotherapy may be given before surgery to remove the tumor. When given before surgery, chemotherapy will shrink the tumor and reduce the amount of tissue that needs to be removed during surgery. Treatment given before surgery is called preoperative therapy or neoadjuvant therapy. Even if the doctor removes all the cancer that can be seen at the time of the surgery, some patients may be given radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy after surgery, to kill any cancer cells that are left. Treatment given after the surgery, to lower the risk that the cancer will come back, is called postoperative therapy or adjuvant therapy. If a patient is going to have a mastectomy, breast reconstruction (surgery to rebuild a breast’s shape after a mastectomy) may be considered. Breast reconstruction may be done at the time of the mastectomy or at some time after. The reconstructed breast may be made with the patient’s own (nonbreast) tissue or by using implants filled with saline or silicone gel.

Forward Thinking Helps Pets in Natural Disasters

Understanding food labels is a great first step toward eating healthy.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why do people leave their pets behind when a hurricane or forest fire approaches? And what happens to the pets that survive a disaster? -- Kerry in Cincinnati DEAR KERRY: Pet owners don’t intend to abandon pets to approaching danger, but it happens all too frequently: Pets get left behind when a disaster strikes. Sometimes an owner has to leave the pet behind -- rescue services prioritize human life over pets when a situation is dire. Sometimes, in the panic and confusion of gathering up things to evacuate, a pet will dart out the door. And sometimes, pets get abandoned because evacuation centers won’t allow pets inside. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when more than 100,000 pets were left to fend for themselves during and after the storm (www. louisianaspca.org/about-us/hurricane-katrina/animal-rescue-facts/), pet shelters radically changed the way they manage intake and care of animals. They became more proactive. They built bigger, stronger networks with other shelters locally and nationwide, and coordinated their efforts with emergency responders. (www.sierraclub. org/sierra/what-happens-animals-during-natural-disasters). They got better at reuniting rescued pets with owners. Pet owners can play a direct role in helping pet rescue efforts by being proactive well before a disaster strikes. Microchip your pets and keep contact info up to date. Keep up with your pet’s vaccinations and health checks. Most importantly, have your own evacuation plan that includes a “go” bag for you and for your pet. A pet’s “go” bag should include an extra leash and collar, a copy of their medical and registration records, pet food, waste pickup bags or pee pads, and extra medication if they take any. Know where to evacuate and which shelters allow pets.

* “I use double-stick tape to hang lighter items on my walls, since it does not leave a hole, and I am a renter. You also can use it to reduce noise from vibrations. It’s nice before a meal because it makes a hard stick of butter easier to spread on bread rolls, but not so soft that you use too much.” -- T.G. in Indiana * “That time of the year is almost here. You know, the time when running the heater gives the whole house the zaps. To keep our carpets from giving us static shock, we fill a water spray bottle with 1 part laundry softener and 4 parts water. Give the air and carpet a spritz, and it kills the zaps.” -- A.O. in Canada * “Hard-water stains in the toilet are no match for denture tablets. Simply drop one in the toilet and let sit overnight. Please submit your resume to: hr@surmotech.com OR call for interview: 585-742-1220, ext 204

It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.

THE ORIGIN S OF OKTOBERFEST Although Oktoberfest originated in M unich, Germany, Oktoberfest celebrations now take place all over the globe. They are a chance to enjoy the early autumn w eather w ith music, food, entertainment and, of course, German beer. Oktoberfest is a 16-day folk festival that begins at the end of September and runs through the first w eek of October. Roughly six million people travel to Germany each year to participate in the official Oktoberfest, w hile many others attend festivities closer to home. W hile many people are familiar w ith the foods, beverages and pageantry of Oktoberfest, they may not be so sure of Oktoberfest’s origins. According to History.com, the first Oktoberfest took place on October 12, 1810, w hen Bavarian Crow n Prince Louis, later to be know n as King Louis I of Bavaria, married Princess Therese von SachsenHildburghausen. The citizens of M unich w ere invited, and the festivities w ere held on the fields in front of the city gates. Horse races took place and eventually concluded the festivities, both at the c ity gates and elsew here across Bavaria. The festival and horse races w ere held once again the follow ing year, giving rise to the tradition of Oktoberfest. To increase the potential for fun and take advantage of longer days, the event w as expanded from one day to a few w eeks, stretching through September and into October.

The tradition-rich horse race no longer takes place and hasn’t for more than 50 years. But the festive atmosphere still prevails. Huge tents are erected to accommodate the large crow ds. Since 1950, the traditional festival opening has been a tw elve-gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at 12:00 by the M ayor of M unich w ith the cry “ O’zapft is! ” (“ It’s tapped! ” ). M illions of people participate in Oktoberfest celebrations. An abundance of food and millions of liters of beer are available to enhance the fun.
