Your Everyday ways to help your elderly neighbors Thoughtful men, women and children can give back to their communities in various ways. Coaching youth sports, volunteering with local charities and donating to local food or clothing drives are just a few of the ways you can help make your community a better place. Another way to give back is to help your elderly neighbors who may not be as independent as they once were. Such men and women may have physical limitations that compromise their ability to perform everyday tasks. People in the prime of their life take their ability to perform such tasks for granted. While these gestures might seem simple, helping your elderly neighbors with their everyday tasks can have a profound impact on their lives. • Ask if a neighbor needs anything from the grocery store. Everyone forgets to buy something at the grocery store from time to time. That’s a minor inconvenience to most people, but it can have a much bigger impact on elderly people who have mobility issues. Before taking trips to the grocery store, make it a habit to call an elderly neighbor and ask if he or she needs anything. • Invite seniors over for dinner or other gatherings. Many seniors deal with social isolation, which occurs when they lack opportunities to interact with other people. Recent data from the Administration on Aging indicates that 35 percent of women over the age of 65 were widows and almost half of women 75 and older live alone. Inviting elderly neighbors who live alone over for dinners, movie nights or game watches once per week is a great way to help them avoid social isolation and give them something to look forward to.
simple tasks like mowing the lawn, taking out the garbage and even vacuuming can be difficult for seniors with physical limitations. Pitching in to help with such chores once or twice a week won’t require much time on your part and can have a significant impact on the lives of your aging neighbors. • Drive seniors to religious services. Attending religious services is important to many seniors, but those who can no longer drive themselves to weekly services may not be attending them as much as they would like. Whether you attend such services or not, offer to drive an elderly neighbor on Sunday mornings (or whenever weekly services are held). Religious services can help seniors stay connected to their faith and their communities, and driving an elderly neighbor to and from houses of worship once per week won’t require a significant commitment of your time.
Helping your elderly neighbors is a great and often simple way • Help with some weekly chores. Seniors living on fixed incomes may find it difficult to maintain their homes. Relatively to give back to your community.
Did You Know? Men and women over 50, who are considering returning to school may be eligible for financial assistance through various programs. According to the American Association of Retired Persons, older men and women who want to go back to school do not necessarily have to bankroll that expenditure on their own.

We are honored to be acknowledged for our 90-year anniversary. As we reflect on that accomplishment of longevity, it brings us back to the start. Our family uses 1928, when Kittelberger’s opened as a farm, as our official starting date, but our story actually began much earlier. Jenny and Will Kittelberger lived on the property where our current store still stands. Although our store has expanded, we have never moved from our North Avenue location in Webster. Jenny had a small greenhouse from which she sold annuals and plants. The earliest records we can find of Jenny’s sales were in 1915 when she sold plants to a church. Jenny and Will brought William Fuchs over from Germany to work with them and help them garden. After Mr. Fuchs met Pauline - at night school to learn English - they married and continued to pursue Jenny’s love of flowers together. It is this 1928 date that represents the start of Kittelbergers for our family. Over the next 90 years many changes have occurred. In 1950, Martin Horeth, an immigrant from Romania, joined William, “Willy,” and Pauline at the florist shop. In the early 1950s, they built a small storefront to house the business along with some pottery and other gardening accessories. Soon Martin fell in love with Willy and Pauline’s daughter, Hilda, and they were married. In the early 1960s, the original Kittelberger House was demolished to make way for Orchard Street to connect the village with the booming Xerox Corporation. A ranch house was built next to the shop for Martin and Hilda’s growing family. That house, in which they raised all five of their children, is now part of the florist shop gift area. Major renovations happened to the structure in the 1970s and 1980s, and in 2001, the major mid-section was torn down and rebuilt, expanding the business into an approximately 21,000 square foot structure. The business still has all five of Hilda and Martin’s children as well as six of the fourthgeneration children operating it. Flowers are still their main business, but the retail business, which includes jewelry, purses, scarves, home decor and much more, is a large part of their total business. There are so many different things they sell. It is not unusual for their customers to spend an hour in the shop just browsing, and their biggest holidays are Mother’s Day and Christmas. In December, Kittelberger’s also holds classes on how to decorate for the holidays. Kittelberger’s now has 50 full and part-time employees some of whom have been with the company more than 30 years. Kittelberger’s also has a strong presence in the
Claire at Kittelberger’s Eric Designing at Kittelberger’s
Webster community and pride themselves on being civic minded. Says the family, “We have loved the privilege of doing business in Webster. Like flowers and plants, our roots have been planted here and have remained in the same soil. The families of Webster and surrounding areas have not only been our customers but have become our friends, as well. We have celebrated with them, brought comfort in times of sorrow, welcomed new members to the family, and helped them show signs of affection and love. We hope many smiles have been brought to faces and have brightened gloomy days. We are proud to be a part of the Webster Community and look forward to keeping Webster a place “Where Life Is Worth Living!” For more information, visit Kittelberger’s website at www.kittelbergerflorist.com. Check them out on Facebook and Instagram, as well.

Servings: 10 cup Apple Butter cup maple syrup teaspoon red pepper flakes teaspoon salt teaspoon smoked paprika pieces bacon extra-large shrimp, cleaned and deveined chopped cilantro, for garnish (optional) Heat oven to 400 F. Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In medium-sized skillet over medium heat, add apple butter, maple syrup, red pepper flakes, salt and paprika. Whisk until mixture is thick and cooked down by half, about 10 minutes. Set aside. In large skillet over medium heat, add bacon slices and cook until browned but still flexible. Remove from pan and drain on paper towel-lined plate. Wrap one bacon slice around each shrimp, secure with toothpick and place onto prepared baking sheet. Once all shrimp have been wrapped, baste tops with apple butter mixture. Bake 5 minutes then flip and baste other side of shrimp. Bake another 5 minutes. Continue to flip and baste shrimp (2 minutes each time) until shrimp is fully cooked. Do not overcook as glaze can burn. Sprinkle with cilantro, if desired.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A colleague might offer to open a door for you professionally. But before you walk through it, be sure this “favor” isn’t attached to an obligation you might find difficult to discharge. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your creativity, your persistence and your reliability could lead to a major career shift. Be sure to use that other Taurean trait, your practicality, when discussing what the job offers. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A changing situation might require some adjustments you might not have been prepared to make. However, flexibility in this matter could be the best course to follow at this time. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You’re in a period of fluctuating moods, which is not unusual for the Moon Child. Your emotions stabilize by the 26th. Meanwhile, try to hold off making major decisions until then. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) That keen sense of perception helps you hunt down those minute details that others overlook. And, of course, your Leonine ego will accept the expected praise with good grace. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Be careful not to be confrontational when raising a work-related issue. Better to make a request than a demand. And, of course, be prepared to back up your case with facts. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your ego might be hurt when a colleague turns down your offer to help. But accept it as a rejection of your offer, not of you. A friend from the past could re-emerge by week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A flow of positive energy turns a work project you didn’t want to do into something you actually love doing. Now, take that attitude into your social, intimate life -- and enjoy what follows. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Working hard to meet your professional goals is fine. But don’t neglect your private life, especially where it concerns your more cherished relationships. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) “Patience” remains the key word in dealing with an emotionally sensitive situation involving a close friend or family member. Help comes your way by week’s end. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) With new information coming in, it’s a good time to rethink some of your goals without taking suggestions from others, no matter how wellmeaning they might be. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Making progress on your project is relatively easy in the early part of the week. A problem could arise midweek. But all goes swimmingly once it’s resolved. BORN THIS WEEK: Holding fast to your principles, no matter what, inspires others to follow your example. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2018
I cherish the loneliness of autumn.... I am forty, I have become mortal. I have no further psychic, emotional, or intellectual need to prolong summer seasons, and it is only when autumn begins its play that I can truly focus on the rich and vital life I am living. All of a sudden I grow alert. October is a hallelujah! reverberating in my body year-round.... The air is dusty, it smells of dry pine needles; yet I sense imminent ice in the clear blue sky.... How I appreciate everything…fully! After all, tomorrow this reprieve will be buried by blizzards, crushed under slabs of doomsday ice. I cannot waste a minute indoors! I must take advantage of this gift, wedged so tentatively between summer’s hectic somnolence and winter’s harsh apogee.... Each perfect day, I know, is going to be the last beautiful day of autumn.

We recently had our 60th Wedding Anniversary, but celebrated on a summer day in July with a "Picnic/Jam" in our backyard. We are so pleased and thankful for all who came and played music or brought a dish to share. The Piper marched, and the band played on! We are truly blessed and appreciate all of you. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Bill and Hilda Santee
There is a person who walks the [local trail] every day between the [local road] and the [local road]. Waking at times can be very boring. The trail however, has many trees. Then up came the idea. Being a bird lover, the Walker began to buy, paint and affix little bird houses to the trail trees here and there. Those who walked the trail each day commented on the joy of looking each day, to try and find the new ones which had been put up. There was a golf shop, a lighthouse, a bait shop and others. Then one day the Walker began to notice some of the bird houses were disappearing. First 3 were gone. Why would anyone steal a bird house? Surely many stores sell bird houses. After those 3 were stolen the Walker bought more and painted them and put them up. Then 4 more

disappeared having been ripped from the trees, and that was the last straw. All 24 bird houses spread out all over the area, were taken down and given to people who will love them, and do...END OF STORY. Except...one would remind the thief of the 8th commandment...THOU SHALL NOT STEAL. Just a reminder to be kind to those working in the retail jobs this summer. We have a bunch of first time workers out there trying to gain experience and make some college money. No need to be nasty. My 16 year old started her first job at a family fun venue and comes home every shift with a story of an adult who was rude and nasty to her. Remember these employees do not make the rules or prices of the establishment. If you are that upset over the extra twenty cents for a cone upgrade, you need to see a manager not swear at and belittle the kid behind the counter. They are there standing in the heat, cold or rain for minimum pay trying their best and learning as they go. It's funny because she never makes comments about the

events for thinking about your younger guests. My children and I have been to several such events recently, and everywhere we go, there are activities for the children, goodies, small prizes, face-painting, bounce houses, petting zoos, even carnival rides free-of-charge. It isn’t always easy for families to afford to give their children a family fun day, but these festivals make it much easier by keeping their snacks and
behavior of the children enjoying the place, just the parents. When are people going to learn to hold their cell and or "smart" phones in the proper position when they're recording something? If you don't know what you’re doing w/ your phone, take some necessary time to figure out how your phone really works or ask a friend. This problem has been happening for quite some time. Let’s get with it people; if it's worth recording it's worth recording properly. Let's hurry up and get rid of the history we all learned about so the next generation has no history class. Then we can say slavery never happened. While we're at it lets go further back and say the Indians were not here first. Then we can put those lands back on the tax rolls and they can start paying taxes also. Maybe the Boston Tea Party didn't happen either. It amazes me how many people can on a daily basis violate the speed limit in [local town]. The main street is 35 MPH and at times the road seems like a raceway. What happened to speed limit
activities for kids low cost or free. Thank you for your kindhearted generosity!
enforcement? Cars, trucks, motorcycles all seem to disregard speed limit signs!! I would like to see more speed enforcement for this residential neighborhood for the safety of all who live here!! Stop Eating Without Paying! To those who take and eat food in grocery stores, please stop. It's disgusting. Not to mention stealing. You know who you are, especially in produce, bulk foods, and prepared foods. What ever happened to the law that says 'innocent until proven guilty?'? It seems the only way justice works is 'trial by media,' which is wrong and also depends on who is footing the bill to whether justice is served or not. We all know who they are... This summer a private citizen beautified a local trail by putting up many hand assembled and painted birdhouses. Almost immediately, someone saw it their duty to remove, steal and destroy many of them. This seems to be an act of meanness and difficult to understand. Why do some people need to act to destroy a donation meant to increase the enjoyment of the trail for all its users?!

--DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you mind providing some guidelines for preventing eye strain? I’m a graduate student, so I spend a lot of time reading, both from computer screens and from books. I will always need to read to get things done, but I’d also like my eyes to last me my whole life. -- B.I. ANSWER: We tend to spend a lot of time reading or in front of computer screens, and eye strain is very common. I think eye problems from excess screen time and reading fall into two categories: dry eyes and muscle strain. Computer users in particular can get dry eyes, largely from decreased blinking. Unfortunately, “blink more” isn’t likely to be successful advice, so I recommend an eye lubricant, used periodically during computer work if you have any sense of eye fatigue or strain. If dry eyes are part of your problem, you will feel relief immediately, and you should use a drop in each eye every few hours. Muscle strain comes from staring at one point of focus -- your computer screen -- for long periods of time. Also, many people tend to hold their shoulders and neck in an uncomfortable position during computer work or play. The solution is to get away from the computer for a while. I recommend getting up and pacing periodically, since prolonged sitting isn’t good for you. Another option is the 20-20-20 rule (I haven’t been able to discover who made the rule, but I think it makes sense): Look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This can help prevent fatigue to the ciliary muscles, the muscles of the eye. Some people, especially those who are nearing or past their 50th birthday, might benefit from very mild reading glasses when using the computer. There is a science behind adjusting your workspace, lighting and monitor settings to reduce strain. There are apps to remind you to take breaks periodically and to change the color of your computer to make it easier on the eyes. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had nail fungus since 1985 in both my toenails and my fingernails. I was treated with oral Lamisil, but it did nothing for my big toe. I have been treated by skin and foot specialists, but the problem has continued progressively over the years. I am 80 years old, and it’s still there. Is there really any hope for cases like mine? -- C.J.R. ANSWER: Are you sure you really want the condition treated? The treatments have potential for real harm, even though it isn’t likely. If the issue is strictly cosmetic, I wouldn’t recommend treatment. If it’s for pain or because you have had skin or soft tissue infections in the area, then treatment is reasonable. If you pursue treatment, get a culture done to be sure you know what you are treating. Sometimes what looks like a nail infection is really something else (psoriasis, eczema, lichen planus or others). Depending on what the culture shows, you might benefit from itraconazole, an oral antifungal agent. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories. Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather. Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity. Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates. Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce.
