On October 1st I was shopping at Honeoye Falls Marketplace. A nice couple was in front of me paying for their groceries. They bought two baked chickens. I said "your dinner is ready". The man smiled at me and waved to the cashier. He pointed at my groceries and said "add those on my bill" What a wonderful experience! Thanks again! Grateful to the City of Batavia for the scarecrows on Main Street. So fun and festive! It's nice to drive down Main Street and see how creative people are!

To the "boy" who was behind me on his motorcycle in the middle of the busy [local town] intersection going to the left. I'm not turning quickly rushing the already gone arrow just because you need to get where you're going. Then you make a scene and scream at me about being a bad driver and calling me disgusting names. You're clearly the one who needs to get off the road. I hope your license gets revoked or you get arrested for road rage because that was shameful and rude. Don't assume she knows the neighbors can see her. When the sun is shining it reflects off the windows making it hard to see inside. Why don't you try talking to her about it? If all else fails, you could just not look into her yard. People have a right to be nude in their own homes.

Thank you to all the lovely people who still hold the door open for those behind them. It may seem like such a little thing, but in a small way, it lets others know that you see them and that you care enough to pause a

Some clarification is needed. Feeding vermin is actually frowned upon by the NYS DEC. Feeding (baiting) deer is illegal in NYS. Look it up. As for the Bible quote, have you ever heard "do unto others as you would have them do unto you"? Feeding squirrels causes damage to home and property, plain and simple. By the way, our neighbor has more money than the Lord himself and far more than we do. We do our gardening ourselves and buy what we can afford. Fences do not keep vermin out, and twenty foot fences would be necessary to keep deer out which is against village code. Last note, flowers are a gift from God too that we have tried to nurture also and those won't eat holes in screens and cause property damage. I do believe trained service animals serve an important role. But they don't belong in grocery carts! And that nasty pad used to line the cart isn't cutting it. I do applaud [local store], they post at entrances service animals CANNOT be placed in carts. My wife and I were shopping in [local town] in 2 different stores. The first store we were in there was a couple in front of us

moment to show them courtesy. All these little kindnesses create a better world. Thank you. The Teresa House Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers would like to send many thanks to all of our Annual Campaign donors- past & present. We are constantly amazed by the generosity of our community! Your donations are used in the day-today operations of caring for the terminally ill and their families. It is only through your generosity

walking down the isle and their little dog pooped on the floor; they did pick it up but never went to the service desk so someone could clean it up correctly. In the second store, we watched a couple take their dog and load it in a shopping cart. Now the shopping carts are meant for your food items and your young child. In both cases, these dogs weren't service dogs, and they did not belong in the stores shopping with their owners. I like dogs, but there is a time and place for your pets, and shopping in a store is not the place. Your truck passed me and another car on a double solid line. You think you are so smart? You're going to be the ones in a coffin someday, when you don't get back in time of oncoming traffic. You people who pass our wide trailer and my car and the truck pulling the trailer, I've seen you barely have time to get back in on time from traffic in opposite direction. You seem to have a death wish because one of these days, you being in a huge hurry, you're going to get nailed from you taking stupid chances. Your choice. You think your lawlessness is permissible, I'm sure one day you will pay the price.

that the ministry of Teresa House can continue. Special thanks to the many donors who contribute every year. We are blessed to live in such a caring community.

You were lucky your fireworks stopped. I was going to call the cops. It's illegal at this time of year and in our county it isn't legal, period. Being so dry out as it has been, it's not a smart thing to do. Anyhow putting all this aside, if you haven‚'t noticed it's not the Fourth of July. But if I ever hear them again, first boom, I will be calling the sheriff's office Not even four months ago myself, as well as other residents of this small hamlet received notice that our sidewalk would be extended. This was joyous news, for children walk on this road, people walk their dogs, and people in general are out walking or exercising. This is a busy route and this was long overdue. However, here we are now the summer is over, yet no sidewalk. I find it frustrating and embarrassing that this around 1/2-1 mile sidewalk extension is so hard to produce. Whether it's the town to which this hamlet belongs is at fault, or the community itself taking it's time to "take the right or low bid" it's inexcusable. It's been four months and it's a sidewalk! So if you are in charge of this project and are reading this, please hurry it up and lets extend it before winter comes.

BREAST CANCER IS THE SECOND MOST COMMON TYPE OF CANCER IN AMERICAN WOMEN. Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except skin cancer. Breast cancer is second to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in American women. However, deaths from breast cancer have decreased a little bit every year between 2003 and 2012. Breast cancer also occurs in men, but the number of new cases is small.

HELPFUL INSECTS

PEST CONTROL

Is it true that the COLD weather brings “pests” inside the house??

YES it is!

ROOFING & SIDING

Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens.

Pumpkin Patch Train Rides at the R&GV Railroad Museum 282 Rush Scottsville Rd., Rush, NY

By Amanda Dudek

On brisk, sunny, autumn weekends, the fullyfunctioning diesel locomotive makes its way up the grade of a nearby hill. All along the way, children can be heard throughout the train calling out, “chugga chugga choo choo!” as the red, yellow, green and orange foliage of an Upstate New York fall season in progress rolls by outside. Shortly, the train stops and runs backwards along this ridge to a pumpkin patch and a part of the museum containing displays, hot and cold cider, cookies and apples, all as part of the train ride experience. Upon arrival, one might think one had arrived at a retirement home for trains. Several of them are kept here, most still on rails, some looking as though they could still run despite their age. Alongside a quaint pumpkin patch, replete with benches, scarecrows, bales of hay and, of course, pumpkins, there is a fenced overlook offering a view of several trains and the valley below. Inside, along with snacks, two railroad model towns are set up, apparently representing two different time periods in railroading history, with trains running through and around them. Children especially enjoyed these model towns, not least because each town had buttons along the outside of the display for viewers to press. Each pressed button activated a different piece of the town, lighting up buildings, moving doors and figures, even sounding a train whistle! Next to this building, a train car was set up to demonstrate train signals and the switching of rails.

All along the way, each person with the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum, all of them volunteers, was friendly and knowledgeable, guiding visitors through the world of locomotives that was so much a part of our regional past. It is this past that the museum continues to preserve, including restoring its 1909 Industry Depot which houses the Gift Shop and from which visitors receive their tickets. The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum is committed to preserving the various sorts of trains that have been a part of our local railroading history. The museum preserves trains, equipment, documents, photographs, films and much more, all related to the area’s rich railroading heritage. The museum has been in operation for just over 80 years thanks to the time and support of its volunteers and the generous donations from the community as well as other sources. Upon disembarking from the train after its return to the station, guests were greeted by a small petting zoo which included such animals as kangaroos, cows and bunnies among others. Snacks were offered for sale, and the gift shop was open, as well. This fall treat of a train ride was fun for all and just the right length for younger guests. The R&GV Railroad Museum certainly achieved its goal of bringing railroad history to life.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The high standards you set for yourself don’t always translate into the behavior you expect of others. That relationship problem can be resolved if you’re more flexible and less judgmental. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Not enough party bids to satisfy the Bovine’s fun-loving side this week? Go ahead and throw one of your own. Then prepare for some serious work coming up early next week. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A new and intensely productive cycle is about to kick in. Be careful not to get too stressed out, though. Make time to restore your energies by relaxing with family and friends. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) This could be a good time to share some of your plans with those closest to you. Their comments could give you some added insight into how you might accomplish your goals. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) An attack of self-doubt might be unsettling for the usually super-assured Feline. But it could be your inner voice telling you to hold off implementing your plans until you’ve reassessed them. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a great time for you to reward yourself for all your hard work by taking a trip you haven’t spent months carefully planning, to somewhere you never thought you’d be going. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Some misunderstandings resist being resolved. But your sincerity in wanting to soothe those hurt feelings wins the day. By month’s end, that relationship should begin to show signs of healing. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A hectic job schedule begins to ease just in time to blow off all that work-generated steam on Halloween. A family situation runs into an unexpected complication. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A cutting remark in the workplace needs to be handled with finesse. Remember: How you respond could determine the depth of support you gain from colleagues. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Once again, that Capricornean stubborn streak sets in and could keep you from getting much-needed advice. Fortunately, it lifts by week’s end, in time to make an informed decision. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) A surprise trip early in the week could lead to other unexpected offers when you return. Word to the wise: Avoid talking too much about this until you’ve made some decisions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Learning dominates the week for perspicacious Pisceans, who are always looking to widen their range of knowledge. A series of important joblinked commitments begins late in the week. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of humor generates good feelings and good will everywhere you go. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

After Hep C Is Treated, What About Cirrhosis? --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 59-year-old woman who was recently diagnosed with hepatitis C and cirrhosis. I have never been a drinker. I was treated with Harvoni for three months. I understand the medication is intended to cure the hepatitis C. What about the cirrhosis? My doctor hasn’t explained any of my long-term effects from taking this. -- C.J. ANSWER: Hepatitis C is a common infection of the liver. It is caused by a virus, which can be transmitted by blood and blood products, as well as through sharing needles for injection drugs. It is rarely transmitted sexually. Anyone with a history of injection drug use, who received blood transfusions or organ transplants before 1992, or who received clotting factors before 1987 should be tested, as should anyone with a known blood or sexual exposure to someone with hepatitis C. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends testing all adults born in the United States between 1945 and 1965, anyone who is HIV-infected, who received hemodialysis or was incarcerated. The treatment you have taken (Harvoni) is a combination of ledipasvir and sofosbuvir, and has an excellent cure rate. The cure rate is 99 percent in people who had never been treated before and who did not have cirrhosis. Even people like you, with cirrhosis, had a cure rate of 94 percent with 12 weeks of therapy in the trial that got the medication approved. Cirrhosis is liver damage and scarring as a result of liver disease. Once it has developed, it is not reversible; however, a successful cure of the hepatitis C virus greatly reduces the risk of further damage, specifically reducing the need for liver transplant and the rates of death, liver cancer and other liver-related complications. These medications are so new that I can’t estimate how much lower your risk of further damage to your liver is post-treatment; however, there is little doubt that your likely successful treatment will substantially improve your expected length and quality of life. But, since you still have cirrhosis, you will need to take some important precautions. These include continued abstinence from alcohol, careful monitoring of prescription and non-prescription medications, avoiding raw shellfish and making sure your immunizations are up-to-date. You should keep asking your gastroenterologist questions until you are satisfied. I recommend you make a list of questions to ask, and bring a friend to help make sure you understand the answers you get. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Should your blood pressure go higher as you age? Is the top number or the bottom more important? I don’t like medicine, and my blood pressure was 145/82, but the top number sometimes goes to 150-158. -- J.S. ANSWER: Both the systolic (top number) and diastolic blood pressures are important, and the difference between them is occasionally important (for example, a blood pressure of 160/60 is more worrisome than 160/85). Blood pressure does go up with age, but even in people over 60, the recommendation is still to get the BP down below 150, and I try to aim for 140 if there aren’t too many side effects. It often takes several tries to find a regimen that gets the blood pressure where it should be without affecting quality of life. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.

How you can benefit from having a pet Pets have been kept for centuries. Statistics from various sources indicate North Americans own millions of dogs, cats, birds, small mammals, and reptiles. Pets’ affable nature and loving looks are enough for many people to welcome them into their homes, but the benefits of having a pet extends beyond their appearances and temperaments. • Pets can help prevent loneliness. Loneliness affects people of all ages, but it is particularly problematic among seniors. Older adults who may be isolated can benefit from having a pet around. According to a study published in Aging & Mental Health, older adults who owned pets were 36 percent less likely to say they were lonely compared to those who didn’t have an animal companion. • Pets can save lives. Pets can be trained to perform various tasks around the house and in the community. Rescue animals assist in finding people after natural disasters. Medical alert pets can help people with debilitating illnesses and assist physically impaired people with everyday tasks. • Pets help lower allergy risks. Keeping pets around can reduce a child’s likelihood of developing allergies by as much as 33 percent, according to a study by pediatrician James E. Gern that was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. People exposed early on to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall. • Pets provide socialization opportunities. A pet can be the common denominator to strike up new friendships and connect with others. Whether walking around the neighborhood or being part of a pet obedience class or interest group, pets can help their owners expand their social circles. • Pets can help combat stress. Talking to or stroking a pet can

make stress easier to handle. A study from researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo found that, when conducting a stressful task, people experienced less stress when their pets were with them. Various other studies and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found having a pet around can lower blood pressure, ease anxiety and may even help to lessen aches and pains. Pets provide unconditional love, which can be beneficial to someone facing depression or post traumatic stress disorder. • Pets help teach responsibility. Taking care of a pet can help children and adults become more responsible. According to the American Pet Product Association’s 2011-2012 National Pet Owners Survey, 58 percent of pet owners say their pets help teach their kids to be responsible through routine care, exercise and feeding of the animal. Pets are more than mere companions. In fact, pets can offer numerous health and well-being benefits to people of all ages.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire. ~Hugh Macmillan

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
