Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.

When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

S E V RA The Community Hygiene Bank, now located at Jubilee Christian Church in Brockport, serves members in the Brockport Central School District with needed personal hygiene items, paper goods and cleaning supplies. Thanks to those who organized or put up donation bins in their areas to help collect needed hygiene items for this drive. With your help, we were able to distribute “Personal Blessing Bags” of full-sized, needed items to over 200 families this past summer. We thank you!
Getting vaccinated does not reduce your risk of transmitting Covid. It reduces your risk of becoming severely ill and taking up a coveted bed in the hospital. Unfortunately, the mandate did not allow for those healthcare workers who put their lives on the line, got Covid, are fully recovered, and have natural immunity. Natural immunity has been found to be stronger than vaccinated immunity. Please look this up yourself in studies that have come out of Israel. I believe most of the healthcare workers who chose not to get vaccinated did so because they had Covid and recovered. Some suggest it may cause harmful health effects to be vaccinated when you have already recovered and have natural immunity, especially in younger people. It is all just so sad how divisive this has become, and it shouldn’t be.
To all my angels
Zero not hero unnecessary hostility
Hygiene Bank thanks
Words cannot express just how we feel. Heartfelt thank yous go out to all my angels at Wedgewood Rehab & Nursing Center who literally saved my life on October 13th. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Sue & Tom
Obviously you are not aware a twice “Moderna” vaccinated person can still get Covid-19 AND pass it on to an unsuspecting, unvaccinated person. I am proof positive.Your rancorous vitriol is uncalled for: [pitting] brother against brother and father against son until hostility and animosity drive our lives. What ever happened to “love thy neighbor” and “do unto others?” We are all in these times together. Can we just concentrate on getting along? I affirm my heartfelt thank you to my wonderful, patient, and kind nurses and aides at Noyes hospital, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated, you are my heroes. May you always have the courage to stand for your convictions. God Bless Us, Everyone.
Nice surprise What a nice surprise to hear someone in the Sport of Kings restaurant paid for my supper on October 3rd! It was very good, and I sure do appreciate your doing so. I will pass it forward to my 87-year-old Veteran friend. Thank you!
Thank you for holding strong To all the people who are standing strong and holding to their beliefs, thank you! Your beliefs are yours alone, and you are a good person for holding to those beliefs. You are not selfish! You are not bad, and you are not wrong! You are a hero, and you are not alone! To any person who has to choose between their job and their beliefs and chooses their beliefs: you are the kind of person that will save this world, and we need more people like you. I applaud your strength of character and your commitment to your beliefs. If you are struggling right now, please know there are others like you, so don’t be afraid to look around and seek those people out. We know that you stand strong for your beliefs because you do care, not only about yourself but about everyone. If you didn’t care, you would give in and take the easy route, but you have chosen to stand strong and that shows the goodness in your heart and your strength of character. Thank you!
Now firing So the threats to fire employees for not getting something that was never required of them before now is currently being carried out. If these companies want to fire perfectly good employees willing to work, why do those companies hang banners on the fronts of their buildings that say, “Now Hiring?” It would stand to reason if companies need workers, they should not be firing them. Would it not be more accurate for the company to hang a banner that said, “Now Firing?”

Shout out to Brenda & Mary Anne! Both my husband and I went to Walgreen’s to pick up items that we usually get with our health plan. This time, it was a disaster! Mary Anne initially had to void the entire order because some items apparently were not covered by our insurance plan (even though they had been before). Mary Anne kept telling me that it wasn’t my fault. Brenda was helping my husband. She, too, was very understanding. Finally, we got through our large order, even if it was a few items at a time. Even though it was frustrating, I want to thank Mary Anne and Brenda for their patience and kindness. Thanks!

Local Artisan Carves Wildlife Sculptures for Charity BY AMANDA DUDEK
W
hen heavy equipment mechanic Dylan Backus left his nine to five to pursue woodworking fulltime, he knew it wouldn’t be easy. With hard work and the invaluable support of his wife, Sabrina, Backus began creating custom pieces and doing projects for local family and friends out of his shop locations in Canadice and Livonia. Then, he began making art. Although it has only been about two and a half years since Backus changed careers, woodworking is in his blood. “I have always been intrigued by woodworking. It is therapeutic and relaxing, and it has always been in my family,” he said, adding that his father has also carved before. “We do our own projects. We have never hired anyone to make anything. Instead, we come up with the things we need and make them ourselves.” As Dylan and Sabrina Backus’ new company, Backus Backyard Creations, began gaining momentum, the couple was inspired to give back to local communities in a new way. Backus, an avid hunter and fisherman, had recently begun carving wildlife and saw in his art an opportunity to support nonprofit organizations and pet shelters which he observes must be struggling so much through these difficult times. They called their initiative Carvings for a Cause. Each week, Dylan Backus creates a carving, usually featuring area wildlife, and people pay for one of thirty “spots,” each a chance to win that week’s masterpiece. A portion of the proceeds goes directly to an area nonprofit organization or shelter. So far, Backus has created an impressive bear to benefit the Hornell Area Humane Society and a majestic owl to benefit Begin Again Horse Rescue in Lima. “I can’t even imagine how tough it is for them right now, and I love that we are donating,” said Backus. “We have been in contact with the Hornell Area Humane Society for a number of years. In fact, my parents just adopted a dog from them. They are a great group of people. Begin Again Horse Rescue, as well, is a group who work their tails off to help people out. It is amazing how much you may not notice all of the nonprofits around you. They run completely on donations, and we need to keep them alive and thriving. It feels so good to be able to give back to our communities.” When asked what inspires his creations, Backus answered that it is partly wildlife and partly what he sees in a given block of wood. “I love the outdoors and creating animals that you can find in this area,” he explained. “However, the decision of what exactly I am making happens in the moment. With the owl I just completed, I did not even know it was going to be an owl when I first started, but the layout of the grain in the wood, it kind of... spoke to me,” he continued. “I had a vision of it as an owl, and I just started blocking it off and creating that.”
●
While Dylan Backus is proud to be able to use his talent to help others, he sees giving back as well as running a local independent business as part of a bigger picture. “It goes beyond nonprofit companies,” he explained. “Everyone needs to depend on one another. We need to unite as a community and have each other’s backs. We need to have unity right now because things are tough.”
This delightful owl was carved by Dylan Backus in support of Begin Again Horse Rescue of Lima!
To Backus, this also means supporting area businesses. “We all need to shop local,” he said. “Everyone is ordering everything, and yes, we all do it. It is just easy. But you have to wonder if someone in your community has what you need or can do the job you need done for the same price or cheaper and coming from your hometown. I love seeing people out there shopping local, supporting their friends and family instead of giving their money to someone else. It’s about coming back to our roots. I know I would rather find someone local and give them the work instead.” Backus plans to continue Carvings for a Cause at least through the winter and even indefinitely. “I want to keep it alive, even if only with small carvings,” he said. “It is incredible what you can do for your community with a small business, connecting with the people around you. This is my favorite part of what we do!” To learn more, visit Backus Backyard Creations on Facebook.

Local woodworker, Dylan Backus, stands next to one of his carvings: a very satisfied looking bear!
As for the process, Backus says each carver has to find his or her own techniques. “You have to have an eye for what you are doing and plan 10 cuts ahead,” he said. “I like to take my time and listen to music on headphones my wife bought me which block out

the noise of the chainsaws. I plan it out in my head, rather than draw it on the wood. I have watched many carvers and seen their techniques, but you can’t copy what others are doing. You have to find your own feel and rhythm.”

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS How else can drivers improve visibility? In addition to replacing headlight bulbs in pairs every two to three years, drivers can take the following proactive measures to reduce the likelihood that their vision will be compromised while on the road. • Replace worn out wiper blades. Wiper blades need to be changed each season or in three-month intervals. Rubber wiper blades can grow brittle rather quickly, potentially compromising driver visibility at times when they need their vision to be as strong as possible, such as when rain or snow is falling. • Clean interior glass and mirrors. Over time, interior glass can develop a film-like buildup that reduces vision and creates hazy reflections from the sun. Smokers may notice such buildup is especially thick in their vehicles. Periodically clean interior glass and mirrors to prevent this film from compromising your vision. • Don’t hang accessories in your vehicle. Fuzzy dice, photos and other items hung on rearview mirrors can prove distracting and block you from seeing the road.

Tips on planning a memorial service • Set the date and time. Memorial services should be planned in consideration of any family members who have traveled from out of town. Set a date close enough to the funeral or anniversary event that visiting friends and family can attend. •␣Choose a location. Arrange a memorial service at a location that is large enough to accommodate the number of people you’ve invited. Know how many chairs you need, tables for food and arrangements and a podium for a guestbook. •␣Compile a guest list and send out the invitations. Stay organized when planning a memorial service by making a list of all friends and loved ones of the deceased for sending out invitations. •␣Personalize decorations and music. Make the memorial service a reflection of the person whose memory you’re honoring by choosing decorations and music the individual would have liked. Use floral arrangements with the person’s favorite flowers or colors and compile a play list of favorite songs or types of music to be played throughout the service. •␣Get input from loved ones. Ask friends and family members of the deceased individual for input about special touches that will best help remember their loved one. •␣Arrange for guest speakers. A key component of many memorial services is having a series of guest speakers who can provide their personal perspective on the deceased person’s life and the legacy being left behind.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Freedom of experimentation: Although chain restaurants may have to meet approval from administrative boards and marketing departments before they can introduce new fare, independently owned restaurants can let their diners decide which foods remain on the menu and even adapt to community trends. Local restaurants may take pride in serving cultural or regional foods.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

Help With Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Is acupuncture a
Celebrating 20 Years
possible therapy to relieve back pain and stiffness associated with Parkinson’s disease? -- R.G. ANSWER: There have been many trials that show acupuncture is superior to no treatment for various symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. This is true especially for fatigue, but also in a composite score that includes stiffness. A systematic review of published studies found that “acupuncture has significant positive effects.” Other studies have shown that sham acupuncture, where random areas of the body were needled, was also effective in treating symptoms. This has led some skeptical authors to conclude that acupuncture is a placebo effect: The treatment convinces people that they are getting better, so they do feel better. However, if acupuncture were completely harmless and improved symptoms, I would recommend it to people who were interested. Acupuncture is mostly, but not entirely, harmless. Adverse events are not common with acupuncture, but they do happen. Minor adverse effects happen in about 9% of cases. Serious adverse events such as pneumothorax (sometimes called a collapsed lung) and nerve damage are occasionally reported.

Complementary therapies are often used in conjunction with medical breast cancer treatments (such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy) as well as by those who have completed treatment. These may include nutrition and exercise, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, homeopathy, acupuncture, mindfulness meditation, yoga, massage, Feldenkrais, Reiki, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, and support networking groups. Before using any complementary therapy, patients should talk with their care team to make sure all aspects of their cancer care work together. Compiled by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Rec Center Almost Opened Again My local recreation center almost opened again. A month ago, the center opened for indoor walking with strict rules. One week later, during a heated board meeting, mostly about masks versus no masks, the rec center supervisor said he was shutting it down for the foreseeable future. Since then there’s been a hue and cry, mostly between the mask police and the anti-mask folks. The center supervisor, ever accommodating but safety minded, declared that there would be certain days for people who wanted masks and days for those who didn’t want to wear masks. Walking on the track, he said, would be the only center activity. “Not fair,” cried those (mostly teen boys) who also wanted basketball, and no, they didn’t want to wear masks. Fine, he replied, there could be oneon-one basketball in three of the center’s courts. But, said others, if teen basketball was allowed, why couldn’t there be adult classes as well? So, the supervisor adjusted the schedule, did measurements on the floor, and outlined space on a basketball court where a no-mask yoga class could be held in the mornings with participants 8 feet apart. You know what happened next, right? The aerobics people wanted a class as well. The spin class wanted space and time (and the bikes). Then those from the still-closed senior center line-dance group wanted to use rec center space. It was right about that time that the supervisor quietly quit. I wasn’t there, but I have it on good authority that he handed the center’s keys to the loudest anti-mask person, saying, “You’re in charge. When the COVID rates go higher in this town, it’s all on you.” The next day, the town changed the locks on the rec center doors. The supervisor, as I heard it, packed a bag and retreated to his cabin in the woods, where he plans to stay until everyone comes to their senses. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

If you do not recognize the name Elsa Von Blumen, you are not alone. She was a Rochesterian in the 1880s who raced high-wheeled bikes against horses, skaters, male cyclists, and eventually women cyclists. In an era when women were expected to stay at home, tend the household, and raise the children, Elsa succeeded in a sport dominated by men and helped pave the way for women to find the courage to break social taboos. Join us as we welcome Karen Lankeshofer as she introduces us to Elsa Von Blumen, Rochester native, bicyclist, and suffragette extraordinaire. This will be an in-person program. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “If you heat a pita in the microwave first, it will be easier to open and will rip less. About 10 seconds should do it.” -- M.E. in Georgia * Baby have diaper rash? One of the best remedies is “air time” -- that is, letting baby go without a diaper for a bit. Another simple soother is a baking soda bath. Try adding 2-4 tablespoons of baking soda to Junior’s bathwater. * Use this tip to vacuum seal your meat for the freezer without any special equipment! Add meat pieces to a plastic, zipper-top bag. Fill a large pot several inches deep with water. Seal all but an inch or so of the bag. As you lower the bag into the water (zipper top up) the air will escape through the unsealed portion. When no air remains, seal the bag and then remove from the water. * “Have you tried this single-serving blender hack using a mason jar? Many standard-size blender blades can be screwed on to a pint Mason jar. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you can make single servings of smoothies to blend and go.” -- T.U. in South Carolina * “Apply petroleum jelly to the panes of your windows before painting the trim. This works better than masking tape in many ways. It is easily removed, and even large paint flecks come right off.” -- P.S. in Illinois * After you’ve cooked your chicken whole, remove the meat and throw the bones and remaining carcass in the slow cooker with 3-4 cups of water. Let it cook on low for several hours for a spectacularly flavorful broth.

DID YOU KNOW?
Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

Professional Pet Sitter Is Teen’s Dream Job DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your column about a pet sitter who had to deal with a sick cat. Even though it was a scary story, I still want to be a professional pet sitter. I’m still in high school, but this is a dream job for me. How do I get started? Do I need to be certified by a national organization? -- Sarah, Blue Ridge, Georgia DEAR SARAH: Pet sitting can be a rewarding career, especially if you do the groundwork needed to really succeed at it. You don’t need a certificate from an organization like the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters, but having a certificate helps prospective clients feel more confident that you know your job and take it seriously. Here’s a few steps to take before starting a pet sitting business. -- Talk to your parents about what you want to do. Because you’re under 18, it’s important to involve them in this decision. -- Do some trial pet-sitting. With your parents’ permission and supervision, pet sit for family friends or relatives. You’ll get valuable experience and learn if you really like doing this. -- Join pet sitting groups on social media. You can glean lots of useful advice from experienced pet sitters. -- Learn about starting and running a small business. If your high school doesn’t offer a class or a club, sign up at a nearby community college. -- Contact the Small Business Association (SBA.gov). They offer free counseling services to help you get a small business off the ground. -- Check out some major pet sitting organizations online. The NAPPS (https://petsitters.org) in the U.S. and Pet Sitters International (https://www.petsit.com/) have lots of information and advice on running a great pet-sitting business. Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful. Page 28

CONSTRUCTION SITE SUPERVISOR NEEDED
BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday.
At Unified Maintenance and Construction (UMAC) we provide premium commercial construction services. Our team is comprised of experienced and innovative professionals who posses a can do attitude. Must be willing to work long hours and be willing to travel. A valid, clean NYS driver license is necessary. Company vehicles are driven to and from job site. Starting pay will be based on experience. Please send resume with references to sbriggs@unifiedmac.com

BREAST CANCER IS THE SECOND MOST COMMON TYPE OF CANCER IN AMERICAN WOMEN. Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except skin cancer. Breast cancer is second to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in American women. However, deaths from breast cancer have decreased a little bit every year between 2003 and 2012. Breast cancer also occurs in men, but the number of new cases is small.
