Shopping local means giving back to charities in your community.
Over 200 Bikes in Inventory Including
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) conducted a survey last year and found that 75 percent of small business owners donate some portion of their profits — about six percent on average — to charitable organizations each year. Many times, those charities are found right in your community. So every time you shop local, a portion of your dollars may also be donated to a local charity, especially helpful during back-to-school time and the holidays.

Geneseo Boy Scouts to Hold 36th Annual Farm Toy Show & Auction and Honor Doug Harke BY GENESEO TROOP 4070, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
B
oy Scouts of America Troop 4070 of Geneseo, New York announces the 36th Annual Farm Toy Show and Auction will be held IN PERSON on Friday, December 3 and Saturday, December 4, 2021, at the Willow Creek Venue at 3100 Rochester Road, Lakeville, NY 14480. It is located one mile south of I-390 Exit 9 on Route 15. On Friday, December 3, the auction preview begins at 6PM and the consignment auction begins at 7PM. The Farm Toy Show will be Saturday, December 4, from 9AM to 2PM. Saturday has an early buyer’s option of $12 for 7AM admission or $5 general admission at 9AM onward. Kids 11 and younger are free! Refreshments will be available; face masks required. All proceeds benefit Troop 4070, including troop equipment, travel, camping, and training expenses. The Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction is the largest farm toy show east of Ohio. Vendors from over 35 states and Canada have participated in the event for the last 36 years. Long-time Boy Scout volunteer parent Doug Harke has led every event. Harke’s three sons were members of Troop 4070 when he held a small farm toy swap meeting in 1986. This is his thirty-sixth annual Farm Toy Show and Auction. “This is a family reunion,” says Harke. “We all greet each other by name.” “Our Scouts are the heart of the Farm Toy Show,” says Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout Bryan French. “They set up, unload, and expedite auction items. Our Scouts make it happen.” Geneseo Boy Scouts, Geneseo Kiwanis, and other local volunteers contribute over 500 service hours over the two-day event.
In 2020, Troop 4070 planned to cancel the toy show and auction due to COVID-19. Instead, Harke challenged its parent committee and its auctioneer to migrate the event online. He received over 400 shipments at his home and stored them all in his garage. Harke and the auctioneer photographed, weighed, and measured every item in the auction, and bundled them into lots. Then, the auctioneer set up the bidding platform and handled payments. Finally, the Scouts packaged and shipped items from Doug’s garage to virtual bidders and staffed Doug’s garage during designated pickup hours to thank buyers in person. Incredibly, the Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction was 100% in person in 2019 and 100% virtual in 2020, thanks to Harke’s leadership and commitment. Troop 4070 is humbled and amazed at his undaunted leadership in the Harke has restored a very rare Oliver face of the pandemic. 1850 front-wheel power assist industrial tractor
with a dozer blade as this year’s door prize! Geneseo Boy Scout Troop 4070 thanks Doug for his incredible persistence, the remarkable example of leadership and service he sets for our troop, and his efforts in raising over $200,000 over thirty-five years. The pandemic proved what the Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction truly is: not only an annual event, but also the annual in-person gathering of a community dedicated to farm toys and supporting our troop.
Over his thirty-five years of service, 80 Scouts in our troop have earned the rank of Eagle Scout. At an average of 250 hours per Eagle Scout project, this means that the Farm Toy Show has underwritten over 20,000 hours of community service from our Scouts to our community. In addition to service, the Boy Scouts create a generational legacy. Troop 4070 Eagle Scout Gregory Krapf earned his Eagle Scout rank on September 1, 1975. Eagle Scout Gregory Krapf became Dr. Gregory Krapf and is now the Scoutmaster for his former Scoutmaster’s grandsons! This is the perfect example of the legacy of Scouting and its capacity to impact generations. This is what thirtyfive years of the Farm Toy Show has made possible. Please join us in recognizing Doug Harke’s thirty-five years of service to our Scout Troop, our Geneseo community, and our nationwide Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction community.
The Harke Family at the Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction (L to R): Eagle Scout Doug Harke, Jr., Diana Harke, and Doug Harke.
Harke prints over 1,000 postcard invitations. The Troop applies address labels and stamps during a Troop meeting, and Harke takes an advertisement in Toy Farmer Magazine and Toy Tractor Times Magazine. The Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction went virtual in 2020. This year, Dann Auctioneers of Canandaigua will headline the auction Friday night, continuing a family tradition of over 20 years of service at the Farm Toy Auction. In addition, Harke has restored a very rare Oliver 1850 front-wheel power assist industrial tractor with a dozer blade as this year’s door prize. Although he will tell you he is just another former Scout parent, Doug Harke has been the driving force behind the annual Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction for thirty-five years and counting. Leading the event highlights Harke’s passion for farm toys, his nationwide network of farm toy collectors, his local community contacts, his career in education, and his garage to raise goodwill and several thousand dollars for Geneseo Boy Scout Troop 4070 every year, covering expenses for training, camping, food, travel, equipment, and community service activities.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Visibility is key in hazardous weather conditions, and keeping the windshield clean is a priority. This means ensuring there is enough windshield wiper fluid in the car and that it is a product that will not freeze. Wiper blades can freeze and crack in the winter. Older blades may be more susceptible to damage. It’s a worthy investment to replace existing wiper blades at the start of each winter. When vehicles are parked, pull the wipers off of the windshield to safeguard them from sticking and cracking.
DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS 1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents.

2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes.

3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror.

4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags. 5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability.

S E V RA Borg & Ide Imaging, Brockport I just went for my dreaded mammogram. I always go once a year to get it done. Aleshia was very kind and friendly during the test. She was kind enough to ask me if I was all right as she positioned me for the X-rays. Thank you for all of your hard work! See you next year! Thank you, kind and cheery lady! Thank you to the kind lady who materialized almost out of nowhere on October 22nd, 2021, and offered to help me carry a trunkload of boxes into the Stafford Post Office. Their combined weight came to over 125 pounds, and this angel cheerfully took the majority of them in. As a senior citizen, I was a bit apprehensive about how I was going to manage the task, and she was an answer to a prayer. My gratefulness to Sal, as well, for his efforts in getting them prepared for shipping. I will pay your kindness forward! Thank you from a Vet I'd like to recognize a true patriot and gentleman: Chuck Anderson. I've been going to Anderson's 56 Barber Shop for years. Chuck should be recognized for giving all Vets a free haircut on Veteran's Day. He refused all payments and tips. It sure made the Vets feel appreciated. - Truly Grateful, Woody Help for Afghan families Thank you, Livingston County residents, for your generosity in donating over 1,600 items of toilet paper, paper towels, bodywash, hand and dish soap and $500 in gift cards to Catholic Family Center for Afghan families. Sixty-five Afghan individuals have been welcomed to the Rochester area with another 30 individuals expected soon. CFC refugee staff have been working 6-7 days a week doing everything they can to welcome these families. Thank you for being so supportive.
Had to chuckle I nearly fell off my seat reading the Rant titled “What an Idiot!” First, why wouldn’t Joe Manchin be concerned about coal mining? His state of West Virginia’s livelihood depends on this very thing. He is doing what he feels is best for his state (unlike most governors). I’m glad Biden went to the summit without a deal. What a waste of money! But what really made me chuckle was “the earth is burning up, and we all need to act fast if we want an environment that is safe to live in....” Give me a break; I’m 64 and have heard this my entire life. Seems like every 5 years or so, we only have a few more years! Climate change is phony; it’s political and a ploy to take away our livelihoods, money (taxation), and freedoms. One other thing: let’s impeach all Democrats and most Republicans as well; sure, we can start with Manchin. Trash Talk Whenever I take my walks in rural [local] County, I bring an empty garbage bag to pick up trash. Thought I’d already seen everything in that realm until today when I found a 7-foot-long fluorescent light tube discarded on the side of our road. Thankfully, it was still intact; if it was broken, the toxic mercury inside would’ve been released. That’s bad anywhere, but here that’s extra bad since we live in a watershed. The following information isn’t for the idiotic person responsible. Anyone that thoughtless wouldn’t bother reading this column. For those who do care about proper disposal, here are no-cost options. If you live in one of the four GLOW region counties (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Wyoming) you can take florescent tube bulbs to an annual Hazardous Waste Disposal collection. Also, at any time, you can do a drop-off at a Lowe’s store location. If you only have one or two bulbs, you needn’t make prior arrangements. If you have a large quantity of discards, call the store first. Idiotic You are foolish to be speeding through a small subdivision where I live and have two kids. You are gaining nothing and putting lives in danger. I can hear the tires squealing around the bend and the slamming on the brakes, and for what? To get home and turn on your TV? You’re a clown. They should tear up the road so your suspension gets destroyed as punishment for your stupidity.

HORSESHOE SOLAR ENERGY LLC Livingston and Monroe Counties, New York NOTICE OF SUBMISSION OF 94-c TRANSFER APPLICATION Horseshoe Solar Energy LLC (Applicant or HSS), an affiliate of Invenergy Renewables LLC, is proposing to construct a major solar electric generating facility (Facility) in the Town of Caledonia, Livingston County and the Town of Rush, Monroe County, New York. On July 2, 2020, HSS filed an Application with the New York State Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Environment (Siting Board) in Case 18-F-0633 pursuant to Article 10 of the New York Public Service Law (PSL) for a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (CECPN) authorizing the construction and operation of the Facility (CECPN Application). The CECPN Application was deemed complete on June 30, 2021. This notice is being provided in accordance with Section 900-1.6(c) of the ORES regulations. HSS is transferring its CECPN Application from the Siting Board to the Office of Renewable Energy Siting (ORES) for review pursuant to Section 94-c of the New York State Executive Law (94-c Process). The 94-c Process replaces the review process established by Article 10 for the permitting and siting of renewable energy facilities with a generating capacity of 25 megawatts or more. On or about December 6, 2021, HSS will submit a Transfer Application pursuant to Section 900-3.2 of the ORES regulations seeking a Siting Permit authorizing the construction and operation of the Facility (Transfer Application). Upon submittal of the Transfer Application in accordance with Section 94-c, the Transfer Application will be deemed complete because the Application was deemed complete under Article 10. The proposed Facility is a 180 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic electric generation facility comprised of approximately 600,000 solar panels mounted on tracking racks installed on land leased from owners of private property (Facility Site). Facility components will include: the solar panels and panel racks; access roads; fencing and gates; an electricity collection system (ECS) consisting of cables connecting the panels to direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) inverters, communication cables, and supporting electronics; a Collection Substation; an operation and maintenance (O&M) building; and necessary electric interconnection facilities. During construction, the project will require one or more laydown yards. Power from the Facility will be delivered from the Facility’s Collection Substation to a point of interconnection (POI) switchyard for delivery into the electric transmission system operated by Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (d/b/a National Grid) (National Grid). The POI is at National Grid’s 115-kV Golah Substation. The Facility will assist New York State in achieving its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by producing 70% of State’s energy generation from renewable resources, such as solar, by 2030 as set forth in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act and State Energy Plan. The Applicant has designed the Facility layout to meet applicable standards and to minimize environmental impacts to the maximum extent practicable. The Transfer Application includes the results of extensive studies evaluating the potential impacts of the Facility and proposed methods to avoid, minimize, or mitigate such potential impacts. Upon filing the Transfer Application, the Applicant will provide funding for the creation of a Local Agency Account. The funds will be made available by request to ORES and distributed in accordance with Section 900-5, to local agencies and potential community intervenors in order to help defray costs and expenses, including attorney and consultant fees, associated with participating in the 94-c Process. Any local agency or community intervenor seeking funding from the Local Agency Account must submit a request within thirty (30) days of the date of the filing of the Transfer Application to the Office of Renewable Energy Siting at 99 Washington Avenue, Albany, New York 12231, Attention: Request for Local Agency Account Funding. This Notice and the Transfer Application will be available on the Project-specific website maintained by the Applicant: https://horseshoesolar.invenergy.com/. Copies of the Transfer Application will be provided to those parties entitled to receive copies pursuant to Section 900-1.6(a) and, for availability to the public, to the following: • Caledonia Library 3108 Main St., Caledonia, NY • Caledonia Town Hall, 3109 Main St, Caledonia, NY • Avon Free Library 143, Genesee St., Avon NY • Rush Town Hall, 5977 East Henrietta Road, Rush, New York 14543 • Rush Public Library, 5977 East Henrietta Road, Rush, New

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Are Big Dogs Dangerous Pets for Seniors? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently read that a large percentage of orthopedic injury to the elderly is directly related to their falling while walking large animals, specifically dogs over 20 pounds. Can you shed light on this please? -- M.F. ANSWER: A March 2019 study in JAMA Surgery did identify dog walking as an increasing cause of fracture. Over 4,000 fractures were identified among dog walkers over 65 in 2017, about triple the number 10 years earlier. However, this wasn’t a large proportion of fractures (only about 2% of total fractures), and the authors did not identify the size of the dog as a risk factor, although they did suggest that clinicians recommend a smaller (and well-trained) dog as a wiser choice. Dogs not only provide some social support, they also encourage exercise. I have had many patients (and a few family members) who have very meaningful connections with their dogs and other animals. In fact, I have seen many people who describe their animal companions as the most important relationship in their lives.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am scheduled for a hip replacement operation because X-rays show joint failure. I am 81 years old and in excellent health. At the moment I do not feel any pain in my hip and am walking very easily. I go swimming three times a week. My question is whether I should agree to this operation as a preventive method to avoid later painful and possibly riskier circumstances because of my age. -- P.H. ANSWER: Hip replacement is indicated in people with severe, debilitating symptoms (such as pain or loss of function) despite conservative management. That doesn’t sound remotely like what you are describing. The findings on the X-ray are less important than your symptoms and function, so I could not recommend a hip replacement for you at this time. Age by itself is not a contraindication for hip replacement should you need one later on. I do understand what you are saying: You are less likely to have a surgical problem being operated on earlier. Some surgeons will operate on people with milder symptoms for this reason. However, you aren’t describing even mild symptoms, hence my recommendation against surgery at this time.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Christmas Dinner in a Parking Lot My senior center is going to hold its annual Christmas dinner outdoors in the parking lot. If that doesn’t bring a tear to your eye about the sad state of our world now, nothing will. Santa will arrive by limo behind the fire truck, we’re told, and will make his rounds through the tables set up across the asphalt, little elves at his elbow passing out presents. Students from the high school choir will sing while others from the culinary arts classes (they’ll get extra credit) will hustle the food and drinks outside and serve it. Parking will be wherever you find it around the neighborhood. In the middle of December? In New England? Why, some of us wanted to know, did they not simply use the town’s rec center? That large space would allow the tables to be spread out, with plenty of parking right outside the door. Best of all, it’s indoors where there’s heat. But no, they decreed, the dinner has to be next to the senior center where the kitchen is. A poll of friends indicates a mixed review of this whole idea. One laughed and said no, he absolutely would not be there. Another said he’d been recruited to set up tables and bring the decorated tree outside, hoping he can find an extension cord long enough to plug in the lights. One adventurous soul decided she will indeed be there, wearing a down comforter over her winter coat, which will be over several other layers of clothing, including snow pants. (She’s also bringing a Thermos of hot coffee and is practicing eating while wearing gloves.) One only hopes someone has put the town plow-truck driver on notice. He might be called upon to plow out the parking lot that day before the dinner. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

HANDYMEN/WOMEN
GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

IMPROVE PRIVACY AND SECURITY AT HOME Homeowners who like to entertain outdoors may want to make their outdoor living spaces more private. Pergolas allow light to filter through but obstruct direct view of patio activity, especially when combined with some gauzy draperies hanging on the sides. An enclosed patio or threeseason room can be a worthwhile addition for homeowners who like to enjoy the great outdoors without being in the elements or on display for neighbors. Structures vary from screened-in porches to greenhouses to removable gazebos. Potted plants or trailing vines can soften the structural edges and help the privacy devices blend in with the natural surroundings.

3. ACRONYMS: What does RPM stand for?
Magnificent Autumn! He comes not like a pilgrim, clad in russet weeds. He comes not like a hermit, clad in gray. But he comes like a warrior, with the stain of blood upon his brazen mail. His crimson scarf is rent.... The wind.... wafts to us the odor of forest leaves, that hang wilted on the dripping branches, or drop into the stream. Their gorgeous tints are gone, as if the autumnal rains had washed them out. Orange, yellow, and scarlet, all are changed to one melancholy russet hue.... There is a melancholy and continual roar in the tops of the tall pines.... It is the funeral anthem of the dying year.

Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

DID YOU KNOW? The first International Special Olympics Summer Games were held at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 20, 1968. The games were the brainchild of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who first proposed the idea of nationwide sports contests for young people with intellectual disabilities in November of 1966. Kennedy Shriver had spent years advocating for young people with intellectual disabilities, even opening a summer camp for such youngsters at her home in suburban Washington, D.C. in June of 1962. More than 200 events were offered at the first Special Olympics, including water polo, the 100-yard swim, the 50-yard dash, the broad jump, and the high jump.
Puzzle Answers This Week
FOUND IN A CAN
* Cookie sheets make great temporary mud and moisture trays for dirty shoes. Stash one at the entry to your home, and you will have less dirt tracked across your floors. * “To make your drains freshsmelling, shake a half-cup of baking soda into the drain. Then pour 2 cups of vinegar that you have warmed on the stove. It will froth and bubble. When it’s done, run the hot water and give it a little scrub.” -- R.C. in Idaho * Blood pressure can be affected by many things, and seeing the doctor is one of them. Instead, request that your blood pressure be taken by a nurse or physician’s assistant. Having a full bladder also can make your pressure reading higher, as can positioning your arm below heart level. * “Keep knitting yarn in check with empty tissue boxes. Set your yarn ball inside the box, and let the string lead out of the top. When not in use, tape the string to the side of the box. Boxes can be stacked and stored for future projects.” -- C.W. in Indiana * “Try this baking tip from my mother: When you have a recipe that calls for dry spices (cinnamon, ginger, ground clove, etc.), cream them with the butter instead of sifting them with the dry ingredients. I do feel like they become infused in the recipe better.” -- A. in Illinois * Visit the dollar store for low-cost toys to use on car or airplane trips. You can get several busy toys and dole them out one at a time. Most parents will attest to what a lifesaver this can be.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Her Dog Won’t Stop Licking His Paws DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My hound dog “Charlie” licks his front paws nonstop, and sometimes his back paws, every time he lies down. He’ll lick the top of his paws and in between the pads. The skin on top of his paws is starting to get raw. I’ve checked his paws and can’t see any cuts or ticks. Why is he doing this, and how can I stop it? -- Lee F., Ocala, Florida DEAR LEE: Go ahead and schedule an appointment with the veterinarian. Charlie could be licking his paws for a few reasons. One, a physical injury or infestation -which you wisely checked for first. Two, an underlying condition that is causing Charlie discomfort, like a muscle or bone injury, or arthritis. Three, a compulsion to lick his paws. The vet should do some bloodwork to rule out underlying disease. He’ll do some other tests to determine if arthritis is a factor. And he’ll check for allergies, which can cause itchy skin in dogs. Depending on what he finds (or doesn’t find), the vet will help you plan a course of action to stop the licking. It’s important to stay on top of this because dogs who keep licking or biting at the same spot can develop lick granuloma. This is a red patch of skin that is sore and itchy, and a dog’s licking just makes it worse. Eventually, it can turn into a red lump of skin. The granuloma can become infected, requiring antibiotics to resolve. And if the granuloma doesn’t heal or gets really large, it may need to be removed surgically. Work with the vet to find the cause of Charlie’s discomfort and resolve it. Treatment may take a month or more, but it will be worth it. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. October gave a party; The leaves by hundreds came,— The Ashes, Oaks, and Maples, And leaves of every name. The sunshine spread a carpet, And every thing was grand; Miss Weather led the dancing; Professor Wind, the band.... The sight was like a rainbow New-fallen from the sky.... ~George Cooper (1840–1927), “October’s Party,” c.1887
Leaves cascading dow n from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. How ever, colorful and aw e-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from grow ing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But w et leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the law n through the w inter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons w hy so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Know when to ask for help. Even the most accomplished women have limitations. Asking for help when you need it can help you overcome those limitations. To be good at what you do, you first have to learn from others. Sometimes the smartest way to overcome an obstacle is having several hands on deck to provide a boost. Thinking that the work is better left to you alone could be a mistake. Enlist help when you need it and never hesitate to ask for another perspective.

To apply: http://www.a-d.us DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.
A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire.
TAKE THE FIRST STEP.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Had Georgie Fletcher of Australia never signed on to play the mobile game “Words With Friends,” her husband, Simon, might be dead. Georgie struck up a friendship via the game’s chat feature with frequent opponent Beth Legler from Missouri. One day, Georgie told Beth that Simon hadn’t been feeling well. Beth relayed his symptoms to her husband Larry, a doctor, who insisted that the Fletchers go to the hospital immediately. A 99% blockage was discovered near his heart, which, left untreated, would have certainly been fatal. * The process of things being stretched out and torn apart as they enter a black hole is called spaghettification. * Our senses of taste and smell are cut by 50% and 20%, respectively, during flights, which is why airplane food has never tasted so hot. (“That’s what I’ve been telling you!” said every airplane food chef, ever.) *** Thought for the Day: “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
