Thank you, farmers!
Exiting thru handicap parking
In the world of supermarkets and deliveries, I just want to say thank you to the farmers and farmettes who share of their abundance with their neighbors. Farm stands are a cool great way to buy produce and eggs (even meat sometimes, depending on the farmer) directly from the people who grow it or tend to it. I’ll miss my local farm market for the winter, but I hope you all enjoy a restful respite with your families and friends. I’m sure the season is long and grueling. Please know your neighbors greatly appreciate your hard work!
I would like drivers to know that "cutting thru" the yellow hash markings in the handicap parking areas is illegal. Not that anyone worries about tickets anymore, but what about taking someone's car door off, or worse hitting someone in one of the store’s electric shopping carts. Please use the designated exiting lanes. You've come too close to hitting me or my car door too many times.
Signs for Roundabouts
Young people thank you
I want to thank the young people that are working in the stores where we shop. If you’re not aware, there is a shortage of young workers. I do not take my change from the cashiers but leave it in the hope that they will receive it as a small thank you for their willing to work rather than stay home or on the phone. I would much rather donate to someone I know is helping me and moving forward in life than having the money go to some six figure income executive in a so-called “charitable” organization.
I wish NYS would put signs up at all entrances going into a roundabouts stating that you need to signal your intent when you go into one. I have seen several close calls because people don't signal their intent. It is the law.

SAFE WAYS TO DEAL WITH SINUS PRESSURE
Sinuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull. They are located in the low-center of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses.
When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration, and dry air can make thesinusmucusthickeranddrainagemoredifficult.Thisiswhenproblems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur.
In order to combat sinus congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep the sinuses healthy.
Netipotsareamongthemorepopularmethodstoflushingsinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drug-free alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba.
The key to preventing infection is to only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections.
Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use pre-packaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottledforthepurposeofalleviatingcongestion. However, whenprepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe.
Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages. Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with several liver cysts over 15 years ago. My primary doctor and I followed the growth of the cysts by ultrasound, and one is increasing in size. We did an MRI with and without contrast to take a look at the cyst. The radiologist stated that the cyst looked “complex” and, for a lack of a better word, unusual.
A liver specialist’s consult revealed that we could remove it if I wanted to. The doctor stated that he just had a patient who had a cyst, and it was cancerous. He felt that it may be best to remove it, but it’s not urgent to do so.
I would appreciate your take on this situation. -- L.S.
ANSWER: Simple liver cysts are common, and even when they are large, they do not need to be removed unless they cause symptoms. However, any other cyst than a simple one needs to be carefully evaluated. There are many possible causes, including various types of cancer, especially a mucinous cystic neoplasm, which can be associated with invasive cancer.
I looked at both the ultrasound and MRI reports you sent, and although it seemed to me that the radiologists thought this was likely a simple cyst with some bleeding, they could not be sure. Furthermore, the growth in the size of the cyst is concerning. In some cases, it’s reasonable to wait and redo the scans in 6-12 months when the risk of a cancerous cyst is low. However, since the liver specialist (who has much more experience than I do) is concerned enough to recommend surgery, I don’t understand why you would want to wait. I suspect the surgery will prove that it was a benign cyst, but you’ll probably sleep better at night once you know for certain. The surgery is normally done laparascopically, and although it’s usually a very safe and effective surgery, there is always a small risk for complications. You should speak with a surgeon.
DR. ROACH WRITES: Do you have any comments on the use of metformin for weight loss and prediabetes? I am a 57-yearold woman. -- B.S.
ANSWER: Factor V is a protein that is critical in making clots, and an abnormThat’s one question I can answer based on very good data. The National Diabetes Prevention Program looked at this very issue. Subjects in the study (who averaged 51 years of age and were overweight with prediabetes) were treated with metformin, an intensive lifestyle-behavioral-change program that aimed for a low-fat diet and 150 minutes of exercise per week, or a placebo. The diet and exercise group had the best response, decreasing the rate of new diabetes by 58% compared to the placebo group. However, the metformin group also had a benefit, with a 31% decrease in the rate of new diabetes diagnoses. Personally, I recommend both. Metformin does help a bit with weight loss, but taking it along with some diet changes and exercise would likely have a much better response than metformin alone. We don’t recommend a low-fat diet anymore, instead emphasizing whole fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and very few processed foods. A registered dietician would be a valuable partner in helping with the diet of your regimen. You don’t need to exercise for the whole 150 minutes, but it’s a goal you can work toward. New studies show that drugs like semaglutide are even more effective at preventing diabetes, but they are very expensive and often not covered by insurance.

elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body.
EXPLAINING METASTATIC CANCER
Cancer survival rates are on the rise, and that rise can be credited to a host of factors. Advancements in cancer research and treatment have played a big role in rising survival rates, as have the efforts ofvariousorganizationstopromote cancer prevention and raise awareness about the disease.
Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air. OUR SERVICES:
The World Health Organization notes that between 30 and 50 percent of cancers can currently be prevented by avoiding certain risk factors and implementing evidence-based prevention strategies. However, people can be vulnerable to cancer if they do not pay attention to their bodies or make an effort to protect themselves against certain risk factors for cancer. In such instances, cancer may already have spread to other parts of their bodies, or metastasized, before they are even diagnosed, greatly reducing their likelihood of surviving the disease.
Cancerthatspreadstodistantparts of the body is known as metastatic cancer and is often referred to as “stage IV cancer.” According to theNationalCancerInstitute, when observed under a microscope, metastatic cancer cells feature traitslikethatoftheprimarycancer and do not mimic the cells in the part of the body where the cancer is found. That is how doctors can tell that the cancer is metastatic cancer and has spread from another part of the body.
When doctors diagnose metastatic cancer, they will refer to it with the same name as the primary cancer regardless of where the metastatic cancer was discovered. For example, the NCI notes that breast cancer that has spread to the lungs will not be referred to as lung cancer, but metastatic breast cancer. In addition, when treating the disease in this example, doctors will treat the cancer as stage IV breast cancer, not as lung cancer.
Understanding metastatic cancer can help recently diagnosed men and women better comprehend their disease and their prognosis.

CONSIDERATIONS WHEN CHOOSING CARPETING
When the time comes to choose flooring for their homes, homeowners may be overwhelmed by the vast array of options at their disposal. The choice between carpet and hardwood flooring, laminate or tile is a matter of personal preference. People have long extolled the virtues of hardwood flooring, but carpeting can be just as stylish and provides a host of other benefits as well.
Carpeting insulates rooms in the summer and winter, adding that extra level of protection against the elements. Carpeting also absorbs sound in a home. Many appreciate the warmth and cozy feeling of carpet, especially when stepping out of bed. Carpeting also can increase the level of safety at home. According to the Carpet and Rug Institute, carpeting makes areas of play safer and may also reduce the severity of an injury in the event of a fall.
Today, there are many different types of carpeting available. Selecting the rightcarpetingforaroomcomesdowntoidentifyingtheleveloftrafficina particular room, the attributes homeowners would like the carpet to have and any other needs that fit with their lifestyles.
Take time when shopping for carpeting, which is a substantial investment that can last for many years if the right material is chosen and installed correctly.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapescansavehomeowners enough energy to make the projectspayforthemselvesinless than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. TheDOEalsoadvisesthatshading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapescanreducepreviously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertimebutdropconsiderably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR
Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames.
According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary.
• Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily.
• Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit.
• Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment.
• Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges.
• Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Marzotta
INTRODUCING A NEW PET TO YOUR CAT
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently adopted a year-old puppy. “Max” is a friendly, well-socialized dog, and during the trial stay a month ago, my 10-year-old cat, “Nora,” seemed to tolerate him. Well, on the second day that Max was home, he started barking excitedly. Nora sprang up and attacked him, cornering Max on the sofa. She batted him around the snout several times. Now, Max slinks out of the room anytime that Nora appears. How can I make peace between them?
-- Gerry G., Manchester, New Hampshire
DEAR GERRY: I’m sorry to hear that! Introducing a new pet into an established household can be stressful for both pets and sometimes unpredictable. And any negative interactions that occur -- from hissing and barking to an all-out boxing match -- can make future harmony nearly impossible to achieve. One or both pets may begin to exhibit behavioral issues like aggression, soiling in the house, chewing and scratching, and more.
For the foreseeable future, you’ll need to manage and monitor all interactions between Max and Nora. As soon as they begin to react negatively, they need to be separated.
Reintroduce the two gradually. I recommend taking Max for a nice, long walk before each meeting so that some of his puppy energy is worked off beforehand. Work intensively with Max on basic commands like sit, stay, lie down and come here. When Max is in the room with Nora, have him sit or lie down close to you -- they don’t have to meet face to face. Limit interaction time to five minutes or less at first, then gradually increase the time.

Consider depth of field. Sometimes you will have no control over the busy background an interesting subject is in front of in a planned photograph. A shallow depth of field achieved with a wide aperture can blur a background and separate the subject from that background, according to Shotkit, a photography and gear authority. Some postproduction work also can be done to blur backgrounds in apps like Lightroom or through Photoshop. December
Henrietta Family’s 12-Foot Skeleton Becomes a Neighborhood Landmark
BY SUZIE WELLS
For the Hasto family of Henrietta, a 12-foot skeleton isn’t just for Halloween – it’s become an icon of festive creativity and community joy. Jennifer Hasto, her husband David, and their two sons (ages 3.5 years and newborn) have turned their towering skeleton into a beloved feature at 319 Vollmer Parkway. With themed outfits and quirky accessories, the skeleton celebrates Halloween, anksgiving, Christmas, and beyond, earning smiles from neighbors, kids on school buses, and countless passersby. is year, the Hastos even brought it out to kick off the school year.
“I love decorating and sharing my style,” Jennifer said. When she purchased the massive skeleton two years ago, she was thrilled to display it for Halloween. en came the idea to keep it up – and dress it up – for other holidays, inspired by Facebook groups where creative skeleton owners share ideas. “I’ve always liked the spookier side of things, and I felt this helped show off my style,” she said.
e skeleton’s appeal quickly spread through the neighborhood. Carrie Ann Martin, a neighbor, shares her excitement: “I’m always excited to see what they will have each holiday, especially with the dog now too!”
For children riding by on school buses, the skeleton is a highlight of their route. Bus driver Beth Faugh says, “Kids on my bus love them. I announce every week we are going to say hello and good morning to the skeleton. And when the outfit changes, it’s more fun.”
Jennifer’s mom, Joyce Gilman, says she initially worried that the unconventional decoration might not sit well with neighbors. “Well, silly me, I’ve eaten my words so many times!” Joyce admits. “[Jennifer] even got a handwritten note dropped off saying how much they like it!”
e Hasto family’s decorations are a team effort. Jennifer comes up with ideas, picks out outfits, and adjusts them to fit the skeleton, while David handles the heavy li ing when it comes to the ladder to get him dressed. eir 3.5-year-old son loves climbing the ladder to “help out,” and Jennifer’s hot glue gun ensures accessories stay put.

For Jennifer, decorating is more than just a fun activity – it’s a way to celebrate what the holidays mean to her. “I’ve always wanted to have my own family and carry on traditions of my family with a little twist of me,” she explains. “My favorite memories are ones now that I learned my parents helped create for my siblings and me, which include decorating the house, cooking meals, and spending time with extended family we don’t always get to see.”
Jennifer’s inspiration comes from a mix of creativity and practicality, with ideas sourced from social media and local finds. “For example, someone found out that the Santa hat chair covers from the dollar store fit his head perfectly!” she said. Each year, she aims to add something new, keeping the display fresh and fun. e response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, and Jennifer is grateful. “Honestly, I am just so grateful that everyone loves the skeleton and that it brings joy to those who drive by! I was worried some wouldn’t like him because it’s a little different than a typical decoration, but this is my style and I love being able to express myself,”

For the Hasto family, decorating is all about spreading joy, celebrating traditions with a personal twist, and bringing the neighborhood closer together. e Hasto skeleton display on Vollmer Parkway is typically up through April/May. CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE
Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation.
Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS
Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school.
Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift.
