A 2013 study published in the Journal of Adolescence examined the effects that parents who volunteer and talk about volunteering have on children. REVISIT LESSER-KNOWN CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

Christmas celebrants participate in many different traditions year after year, but some may not fully understand the meaning behind such activities. A Christian holiday, Christmas did not originate with all activities centralized to the church. In fact, many of the traditions people hold dear have pagan roots, which were adapted as Christmas celebrations evolved.

People who hang mistletoe in doorways may be surprised to learn that this tradition dates back to the ancient Druids. The Druids believed mistletoe possessed mystical powers that brought good luck to the household and warded off evil spirits.

Evergreen trees are now associated with Christmas trees, but evergreen boughs were once used to decorate homes during the winter solstice to help people envision the spring to come. Christians often look at evergreen trees as a sign of everlasting life and their relationship with God.

However, while many Christmas traditions continue to be an integral part of annual celebrations, there are some customs that have fallen out of favor. Although these traditions may no longer be widely practiced, anyone can revive them and make them part of their holiday celebrations.

Wassailing is a custom that has ancient origins and is not as popular today as it once was. “Wassail” comes from the Ango-Saxon phrase “waes hael,” which means, “good health.” Wassail is a drink made of mulled ale, spices and other ingredients. To go wassailing meant to travel door-to-door singing and offering a drink from a wassail bowl in exchange for gifts. Wassailing has been mentioned in certain Christmas carols, including “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

Largely an English tradition, wassailing was brought to America by British settlers. January 17th, the old Twelfth Night, is the traditional date for wassailing. Although wassailing has largely fallen by the wayside, increased interest in ales and craft brewing may help revitalize this Christmas tradition, which can inspire community spirit.

Gifting with fruitcake is another tradition that has been much maligned and does not enjoy the same popularity that it once did. Fruitcake is a cake made with chopped candied fruit, nuts and spices and is occasionally soaked in spirits. Fruitcakes have been enjoyed all over the world, but Americans may never have embraced the Christmas fruitcake tradition as much as those from other countries. However, with the right recipe and an open mind, it may be possible to resurrect the fruitcake tradition once again.

* On Dec. 15, 1973, Jean Paul Getty III, the grandson of American billionaire J. Paul Getty, is found alive near Naples, Italy, five months after his kidnapping. Getty had initially refused to pay the ransom, but agreed after the boy’s severed right ear was sent to a newspaper in Rome.

* On Dec. 16, 1998, President Bill Clinton announces he has ordered air strikes against Iraq because it refused to cooperate with United Nations weapons inspectors. Key members of Congress accused Clinton of using the air strikes to divert attention from ongoing impeachment proceedings against him.

* On Dec. 17, 2003, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” the final film in the trilogy based on the best-selling fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, opens in theaters.

THE HISTORY OF HOLIDAY LIGHTS

Thomas Edison, the inventor of the first successful practical light bulb, also created the first strand of electric lights that would be used in holiday decorating. By 1880, Edison had standard incandescent light bulbs well sorted out and desired a way to better advertise his invention, so he decided to make the most of the holiday season and put his light bulbs on display. According to a 2003 article in American Heritage magazine titled “The Wizard of Your Christmas Tree,” Edison strung incandescent bulbs all around the compound of his Menlo Park, NJ, laboratory. Edison constructed an eight-mile underground wiring system in order to power this grand light display. Because the laboratory was situated along the railroad that passed between Manhattan and Philadelphia, thousands of people were able to see the display.

The concept of electric holiday lights took a bit of time to catch on. Edison’s friend and associate Edward Johnson was tasked with stringing together colored lights in 1882 and placing them on an evergreen tree. Johnson hand-wired 80 red, white and blue light bulbs. In 1895, President Grover Cleveland requested the White House family Christmas tree be illuminated by multi-colored electric light bulbs.

In 1903, when General Electric began to offer pre-assembled kits of holiday lights, stringed lights were reserved for the wealthy and electrically savvy. For example, in 1903 a single string of electric lights cost $12, or around $300 today.

It would take several more years before holiday lights became a national tradition. On Christmas Eve 1923, President Calvin Coolidge began the country’s celebration of Christmas by lighting the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse located south of the White House with 3,000 electric lights. Today, illuminated strands of lights have become a large part of holiday celebrations and have even been adopted for use during various year-round events. Such lights can be a beautiful and festive addition to many celebrations.

White Chocolate Almond Raspberry Cake

is is a u y almond cake with raspberry lling & a white chocolate amaretto buttercream frosting.

INGREDIENTS

Almond Cake:

- 2 and 1/2 cups of cake our, si ed

- 3 teaspoons baking powder

- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

- 3/4 teaspoon salt

- 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)

- 1 and 1/2 cups granulated sugar

- 6 lg.egg whites (room temp), lightly beaten ‘til foamy - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

- 2 teaspoons almond extract

- 3/4 cup whole milk, room temperature

- 2/3 cup sour cream, room temperature

White Chocolate Amaretto Buttercream Frosting:

- 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)

- 2 and 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, si ed

- 1/4 teaspoon salt

- 1 tablespoon heavy cream

- 1 and 1/2 tablespoons amaretto liqueur

- 1 teaspoon almond extract

- 6 oz. white chocolate, melted and cooled for 10 min.

INSTRUCTIONS:

For the cake:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees (F). Generously grease the bottom and sides of two 9-inch round cake pans; line with parchment paper rounds and set aside until needed.

2. In a large mixing bowl, si together the cake our, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.

3. In a large bowl using a handheld electric mixer, beat the butter on medium-high speed until smooth and creamy, about 1 minute.

4. Gradually add in the sugar. Once all of the sugar has been added, beat on high speed for 2 minutes.

5. Reduce the speed to low and add in the egg whites, a little bit at a time, beating well a er each addition, and scraping down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.

6. In a separate small dish, combine the vanilla extract, almond extract, milk, and sour cream. Mix until evenly combined.

7. On low speed, add the our mixture in three additions, alternating it with the liquid milk/sour cream mixture, beginning and ending with the our, and mixing until combined.

8. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans and smooth the tops.

9. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until lightly brown around the edges and a toothpick inserted in the center of the cakes comes out clean.

10. Cool the cakes in the pans, places on a wire rack for 15 minutes. en invert the cake layers onto cooling racks and cool completely.

For the frosting:

1. In the bowl of a stand mixer tted with the paddle attachment, or in a large bowl using a handheld electric mixer, beat the butter on medium-speed until completely smooth. Reduce the speed to low and gradually add in the confectioners' sugar, beating until all of the sugar is completely combined.

2. Add in the salt, cream, amaretto, and almond extract and beat smooth

3. Add in the white chocolate and beat smooth. Once all of the ingredients have been incorporated, increase the speed to medium-high and beat for a minute.

Assembly and Garnish:

1. Using a long, serrated knife, slice each cake in half horizontally, so that you have 4 even layers.

2. Place one cake layer on a large plate or cake stand. Spread 1/2 cup of the frosting on top of the cake, covering it completely, then spread a 1/4 cup of raspberry preserves on top of the frosting.

3. Top with another cake layer, and repeat the layering process, ending with the last cake layer on top. Spread all remaining frosting over the top and sides of the cake.

4. Using your hands, gently press the sliced almonds all around the sides of the cake. en top with fresh raspberries!

5. Allow the cake to set for 20 minutes before slicing. en serve, or store, in the refrigerator, for up to 2 days. Bring to room temperature before serving.

Follow-up Colonoscopy Necessary After Result of Eight Polyps

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 73-year-old male. This year, I had a colonoscopy. They found some small polyps and one larger polyp. All polyps tested negative for cancer. I have had two previous colonoscopies in the past 10 years. Polyps were found in each one. My gastroenterologist said I should have another colonoscopy in one year. There has been no colon cancer in my family. As you age, is it safe to continue with a colonoscopy? I don’t feel safe having one every year. At what age should seniors stop having a colonoscopy? My previous gastroenterologist told me to have one in five years. I do a stool test yearly, given by my primary doctor. -- F.Q.

ANSWER: I read your reports, which showed a total of nine polyps, all “sessile” (flat, which is higher risk for development into cancer than those with a stalk), the largest being 8 mm. The pathology report confirmed these as tubular adenomas, none of which had the worrisome finding of high-grade dysplasia.

The official guidelines of the American College of Gastroenterology recommend a follow-up colonoscopy in three years. I definitely agree with that in people who are otherwise healthy. Colon cancer does definitely run in families, but at least 80% of colon cancer occurs in people with no known family history, meaning you can’t be complacent even if there isn’t any history in your family.

There is no absolute age cut-off for screening colonoscopies: Age 75 might be reasonable in someone who really doesn’t want to have another and whose previous results have all been normal, but I would be unlikely to recommend a screening exam in a person older than 85. People who have serious medical conditions outside the intestinal tract get less benefit from screening.

Age 73 is not so old that I would recommend against screening in otherwise healthy people, and given that you have had eight polyps, I definitely recommend a three-year follow-up. I don’t know why the gastroenterologist said one year, based on the reports you sent me.

FOUR IDEAS FOR HEALTH CARE PLANNING IN RETIREMENT

(NAPSI)—The Employee Benefit Research Institute estimates that a typical 65-year-old couple will spend a total of $265,000 in health care costs over the remainder of their lives. This staggering amount of money has the potential to derail even the best-laid retirement plans.

Vanguard and Mercer recently developed a new framework, “Planning for Health Care Costs in Retirement,” that identifies practical tips for forecasting your health care expenses. Here are four top ideas:

1. Personalize health care costs. Start by understanding how your health history and current health status will influence expenses. Even your geographic location, marital status and age at retirement will impact your forecasts.

2. Plan for long-term care. This is a tough one to assess because half of retirees won’t even incur these costs, but on the other end of the spectrum, 15 percent of retirees will spend more than $250,000. Consider potential long-term care options, such as unpaid care from family and less-expensive available facilities.

3. Create a hedge in your budget for other expenses. Research shows that retirement spending in virtually all categories other than health care tends to decline with age. By forecasting steady spending in other expense areas, you may create a buffer in your budget to deal with rising health care expenses.

4. Forecast costs in annual spending. There are so many variables involved in estimating health care costs in retirement that trying to plan around a total lifetime budget can be overwhelming. Experts recommend that you focus on annual spending plans instead, provided that you understand costs will rise as you age.

For seniors who are struggling to find cash in their retirement budgets to offset unexpected health care expenses, it may be a good idea to take stock right now of all your assets. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy.

You should review your life insurance policy from time to time and determine whether or not it’s still needed. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000.

The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact.

While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I believe strongly in natural cures and treatments for people and pets. Recently, my tomcat, Jessup, went to the vet to get xed, to stop my neighbors from complaining about his aggressiveness. I used herbal tinctures and supplements to prevent infection and reduce Jessup’s pain so that he wouldn’t have to take antibiotics and other medications that might harm his health long-term. When I told this to the vet at Jessup’s follow-up, she got really upset and said that if I did that again, she would no longer accept Jessup for treatment. I don’t understand why. Who’s in the right here? -- Sherry L., Los Angeles

DEAR SHERRY: While herbal supplements can be helpful for pets, it’s very important that you share with the veterinarian any current or intended use of these supplements.

For example, some prescribed drugs can interact with supplements and prevent a pet’s liver from properly metabolizing those supplements, causing a dangerous buildup of toxicity.

Vets today will work with pet owners to make sure that prescribed medications don’t interfere with, or interact with, herbal or vitamin supplements. But you have to be upfront and list any and all remedies that you’re giving to your pet. is is especially important with higher-risk procedures and surgeries of any kind, including neutering and spaying. A small pet’s body is especially reactive to pain and infection, and it’s important to keep them comfortable and avoid hampering their body’s ability to heal.

Work with the vet. Follow their advice. Ask questions before a procedure and disclose the supplemental treatment that you’d like to give your pet. Veterinarians will work with you on an e ective treatment plan because, just like you, they want your cat to be healthy and happy.

CHRISTMAS TREES BRIGHTEN THE SEASON

Decked out in tinsel, lights, ornaments, and garland, Christmas trees are enduring symbols of the holiday season that boast a rich history. Evergreen trees have been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years, and eventually became associated with Christianity. Plants and trees that remained green all year held special meaning to ancient peoples, and were purported to keep away illness and evil spirits.

Germans were credited with tying evergreen trees to Christmas celebrations. In the sixteenth century, devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, is believed to have first added lighted candles to these trees after he was inspired by twinkling stars in the night sky.

While early Americans found Christmas trees an oddity, the tradition, brought over by German settlers, eventually caught on. Today, between 25 and 30 million natural Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, states the National Christmas Tree Association. Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada.

* To control the level of garlic in a recipe, add it at the beginning for a lighter taste and at the end for a stronger taste. To get garlic out of the clove quickly instead of tedious peeling, just smash it and squeeze it out.

* The best cure for a foggy windshield is a chalkboard eraser. You can purchase them at office supply stores. They can be stored easily in your glove box. * Fill measuring cups with hot water and empty quickly before measuring sticky substances like honey or peanut butter. It will slide out much easier.

* Banana trick: For faster ripening, leave bunches together and store in a bag. For slower ripening, separate the bananas. They will ripen faster if stored near apples or citrus fruit. Also, remember that just because the outside is getting brown spots, the inside isn’t necessarily going soft.

* Warm up refrigerated baked goods in the microwave, but add a mug of water. It will keep the moisture in the bread. If your bread loaf is going stale, wrap it in foil and pop it in the oven for about 10 minutes at 300 F. It will freshen the bread!

Super Care at Highland

On 11/11, I was at Highland (6W) for an ailing gallbladder and a drain insertion. After the procedure, an excruciating pain overcame me, with pain so severe I could not sit down, my breathing became labored, and sweat poured from my body. Nurse Kari realized I was in trouble and stayed with me for 2 different meds to be put in my IV until the pain was brought under control. It took a while, but she stayed to ensure that the pain issue was resolved. Justin patiently helped me learn the procedures for caring for the drain system at home and rehearsing with me to be successful. There were many fine nurses who are working diligently to ensure their patients get wonderful care! Many thanks to you all!

It’s Stealing

This is to the people who got far more change back when paying for their meal. The check was around $50. You gave the waitress/server $100. They returned and gave back almost the same as the food bill. Sure the waitress/ server gave the wrong change, mistakes happen, but keeping that money is nothing less than STEALING. The waitress/server had to pay that back from their own money. Keep in mind all the security cameras. Do the right thing and return the money. Then if you return again you would be welcomed for doing the RIGHT THING.

Helium is Limited

Do you know that helium is an element? That means it cannot be manufactured. When the world's supply of helium is depleted, there is no replacement. Did you know MRI machines require helium? Despite this crucial medical need and other industrial needs, people persist in buying helium balloons, thereby promoting the waste of this element. Once introduced into the air, helium cannot be reclaimed. Recently, a local memorial event was publicized on TV news where people released hundreds of helium filled balloons. Not only is this a waste of helium, but the balloons eventually come down, causing litter and a danger to wildlife. There are dozens of respectful ways to honor a death that are not polluting and wasteful.

Avoiding Holiday Shopping Scams

It’s that time of year again when we do holiday shopping, much of it online. It’s also the time when more scammers come out.

And what is it scammers want most? ey want your personal information so they can turn it into cash and fraudulent purchases.

Here are a few ways to avoid getting scammed online this holiday season:

Beware sales emails that include links, even if the email is from a store you usually use. ieves are very good at making their scam pages look genuine. Instead of clicking a link, open a web browser and go directly to the website itself. Sometimes the email will request that you update your account information. Instead, call the store and ask if they’ve sent out that request.

Beware the tracking emails you get with updates about packages that you’re expecting. Remember that genuine FedEx and UPS emails won’t ask for any personal information from you. Don’t click links. Go directly to the website.

Be careful where you shop online. Check reviews to see what others have to say. Avoid those with few or low ratings.

Consider using Amazon for most of your online purchases and having a Prime membership. Amazon is good at protecting customers when it comes to you receiving damaged items or not receiving any items at all. A Prime membership now costs $139 a year, but it includes free shipping, free movies and videos, and more.

If you are scammed, report it. Call your bank and the police, and then notify the Elder Fraud Hotline at 833-372-8311.

A goal for 2023: Go inside your bank to do your transaction now and then. Yes, it’s easier to just use the drive-up window for deposits and cash withdrawals, but there is a lot to be said for letting them put a face to a name. Once they know you and your banking habits, they’re more able to quickly identify anything that might be wrong.

Did You Know? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, which causes stiffness, swelling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. While psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people between the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slowly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis will not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies.Those who have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

The toy became so popular among his daughter’s friends that demand for the same toy started coming in from people and the man had to license the concept to a manufacturer for mass production. Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonpro t organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992. e Bristol Hills Historical Society registered the two sites as o cial Wreaths Across America participants – Bristol Center Cemetery in the town of Bristol, and Coye Cemetery in South Bristol – and researched the names of the 52 veterans buried in the two cemeteries. e historical society then asked local residents to sponsor the purchase of holiday wreaths, which will be placed on the graves in ceremonies honoring each veteran individually.

e ceremonies, timed to coincide with the national event, will take place at noon on Dec. 17 at Bristol Center Cemetery, 4471 State Route 64, and at 2 p.m. at Coye Cemetery, at the corner of State Route 21 and Bopple Hill Road. e public is encouraged to attend.

e local organizer of the Historical Society’s events, A.J. Magnan, Commander, U.S. Navy (Retired), said the designation of the two cemeteries was a test of the local enthusiasm for the Wreaths Across America program. Local sponsors far exceeded the goal of 52 wreaths, allowing the Historical Society to place wreaths at a third cemetery – Wilder Cemetery, where town co-founder Gamaliel Wilder, a Revolutionary War veteran, is buried.

“We were grati ed by the support local sponsors showed for this project,” Magnan said. “ is will help us expand to more local cemeteries in future years.”

Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area

(NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses.

In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area.

“One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates.

The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states.
