DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Department of Labor and data from the U.S. Census Bureau, registered nurse is the most common occupation for women in the United States labor force. Slightly less than 2.1 million women worked as registered nurses in 2017, the most recent year for which statistics are available. Such figures are harder to come by in regard to Canada, but Statista reports that the labor participation rate among women in Canada in 2018 was right around 64 percent. That rate marks a slight decrease from its 21st century peak in 2005, when 66.7 percent of women were active members of the Canadian workforce. In the United States, more than two million women worked as secretaries or administrative assistants in 2017, making these professions the second most common occupation among female workers. Elementary and middle school teachers was the third most common occupation for female professionals, employing more than 1.9 million women in 2017. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau also indicates that women have the lion’s share of jobs in an assortment of professions, including preschool and kindergarten teachers, secretaries and administrative assistants, childcare workers, and dental assistants. Women hold at least 92 percent of the jobs in each of those professions in the United States.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE
Upgrade walkways. Though it’s more expensive than adding planters and planting perennials, upgrading old and cracked walkways is a great way to give a property a whole new look. According to the renovation experts at HomeAdvisor, homeowners typically pay between $6 and $12 per square foot for new concrete walkway installation.Homeowners working on a budget can target spots where walkways have already cracked and fix those areas first before continuing the project piecemeal until all the old walkways have been replaced.

Ascochyta leaf blight
Lawns suffering from ascochyta leaf blight will become straw-colored. According to the lawn care and pesticide experts at Ortho®, when a lawn is affected by ascochyta leaf blight, its healthy grass blades will be mixed in with diseased grass blades. Most prevalent in the spring, this disease can affect grass at any time during the growing season. That’s because the ascochyta fungi invade leaf blades through wounds, such as those that can result from mowing. Ortho® notes that dull lawn
can contribute to the disease, which might disappear on its own and can even return after it’s seemingly been cured.

How do I prepare my soil for planting?
Properly preparing your soil before planting is essential for creating a thriving garden bed. To embark on this journey, begin by meticulously removing any pesky weeds or grass that may have taken root in the area. This will help ensure that your plants have ample space to flourish without any unnecessary competition for nutrients and resources. Once you have cleared the canvas, it’s time to indulge in the art of soil cultivation. Gently till or dig the soil to loosen its texture, allowing for improved aeration and drainage. As you delve into this task, consider adding a touch of magic in the form of organic matter. Compost, a delightful concoction of decayed organic materials, can work wonders for your soil structure and serve
as a nutrient-rich feast for your soon-tobe-planted garden gems. Generously incorporatethispreciousresourceintothe soil, allowing it to weave its enchantment and transform the landscape. Finally, as you put the finishing touches on your soil masterpiece, gently smooth the surface and offer it a refreshing drink of water, quenching its thirst and creating an inviting environment for your seeds or seedlings.
How often should I water my garden? The rhythm of watering your garden is a delicate dance, influenced by a symphony of factors that harmonize to create the perfect balance. Consider the unique needs of your plants, the composition of your soil, the whims of weather, and the
stage of growth your green companions find themselves in. As you traverse this journey, keep in mind that moderation is key. While providing ample hydration is crucial, drowning your garden in excess water can lead to soggy roots and a lack of oxygen, stifling the potential for growth. Instead, aim for a gentle and nourishing approach. Seek to deliver approximately 1 inch of water per week, a golden rule that provides ample moisture without overwhelming the delicate ecosystem beneath the surface.
Look for this weekly column! Your questions answered by the local Cornell experts.
However, remember that this is merely a guiding principle, and it’s vital to listen to the whispers of your garden. Observe the moisture level of the soil, and let it guide your hand as you adjust your watering routine. Remember, deep and infrequent watering encourages the development of robust root systems, anchoring your plants firmly in the ground and preparing them for a flourishing future.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR
Determine the charging time of your vehicle: The automotive experts at J.D. Power note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs, and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV, confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of driving time after a full charge is ideal.

According to a 2011 study published in the peer-reviewed journal the Annual Review of Nutrition, experimental data from animal studies suggests that maternal undernutrition among pregnant women may play a role in preterm birth. The study also reported that a lack of specific nutrients during pregnancy may influence gestation length by increasing the likelihood that a woman will give birth before reaching full-term. Women who are pregnant or hope to become pregnant can speak with their physicians about the role nutrition can play in a healthy, full-term pregnancy.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Apple Cider Vinegar Is a Surprising Help for Blood in Urine
DEAR DR. ROACH: Recently, I had anal cancer and was treated with chemo and radiation. The radiation burned my insides and severely damaged most of my internal organs. One of the aftereffects was occasional blood and small clots in my urine. A few months ago, both the frequency and amount of blood, especially the clots, increased dramatically. The size and number of the clots got so large that they blocked my urethra. During a visit to my urologist, he looked into my bladder and declared it “angry.” Then he told me the same thing every doctor has told me about every problem caused by my treatment: “It was caused by the radiation, and there is nothing that can be done.”
Shortly after this, I began to take unfiltered apple cider vinegar in hopes that it would improve my digestive problems. It helped a little, but the big difference was that I have not had a single recurrence of either blood or clots in my urine. Can you tell me if this is due to the vinegar or if it is just a coincidence? -- A.G.
ANSWER: No, I can’t definitively tell you whether the vinegar helped. It was probably by chance, but let me explain a little about it.
Rectal cancer is often treated with radiation, or combined chemotherapy and radiation, either prior to or after surgery. The dose of radiation is quite high compared to some other cancers, and the complications can be significant.
In addition to damage to the bowel and bladder, radiation treatment can damage the bones and bone marrow, leading to poor blood-cell production, infertility, premature menopause, and more cancer years later. On the other hand, radiation is used when it is expected to improve the cure rate of cancer. Still, the side effects can be challenging.
Hemorrhagic cystitis (bleeding from the bladder) can be caused by chemotherapy or radiation. It may start within a few months or as long as 20 years after radiation.
I am surprised your urologist did not offer any treatments, as there are certainly ones available. Although none of the currently available systemic drugs are proven to be very effective, hyperbaric oxygen is one treatment that is, at least, moderately effective. Medicines placed into the bladder and laser bladder treatments are sometimes tried as well.
I was unable to find any study that evaluated the effectiveness of apple cider vinegar. I am skeptical, but reports like yours of apparent improvement associated with its use might convince a researcher to conduct a study to determine whether it really is effective.

THE DANGERS OF BELLY FAT
What are the best ways to decrease belly fat? Individuals with substantial belly fat should work in concert with their physicians to develop a healthy regimen to decrease that fat. A combination of diet and exercise is generally recommended, but how much exercise and which foods to eat will depend on individuals’ current conditions and medical histories. So it’s imperative that individuals speak to their physicians before making any drastic changes to their diets and fitness regimens.

CHOCOLATE CARDAMOM TRUFFLE CAKE
Serves 10 to 12 Amaretti Base
5 ounces amaretti
God
~Jewish Proverb
1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter
5 tablespoons sugar
Cardamom Truffle Filling
2 1/3 cups heavy cream
4 to 6 green cardamom pods, lightly bruised to open them
25 ounces dark chocolate (60-70% cocoa solids), grated 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cubed
4 tablespoons chocolate liqueur
Cardamom Cocoa Sugar
3 green cardamom pods
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 10-inch cake pan with a removable base, base and sides lined with nonstick parchment paper
To make the amaretti base, finely crush the amaretti in a food processor or put them in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin. Melt the butter and sugar in a pan over low heat, then stir in the amaretti crumbs. Press the mixture evenly over the base of the prepared cake pan and refrigerate for 20 minutes.
To make the cardamom truffle filling, put the cream and cardamom pods in a pan and heat until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and set aside to infuse for 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, put the chocolate and butter in a saucepan. Strain the infused cream through a fine strainer onto the chocolate (the cream will be warm enough to melt the chocolate). If it doesn’t melt, warm over very low heat, stirring occasionally, but do not allow to boil. Stir in the liqueur, then set aside until almost cold, but not set. With an electric mixer, beat the chocolate mixture for a couple of minutes - this will give the cake a lovely airy texture. Pour onto the amaretti base. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or up to 48 hours before serving.
To make the cardamom cocoa sugar, remove the black seeds from the papery cardamom pods and put the seeds in a spice grinder with the sugar and cocoa. Grind to a powder. Carefully remove the cake from the pan and peel off the lining paper. Set on a chilled serving plate and sift the cardamom cocoa sugar evenly over the top. Serve immediately, cut into very thin slices.

Recipe for Success: Mahmood Mamdoh’s Journey with Salvatore’s in Avon
BY SUZIE WELLS
Aself-proclaimed “family man,” Mahmood Mamdoh, and his wife, Canandaigua native, Deanna Robinson, live in Greece with their two children, commuting to Avon to run the East Main Street business. Mamdoh says he loves the more rural community with open areas and farms and hopes to someday move in favor of the smalltown life he treasures in his business life. Running the business and running around with their children leaves them busy but loving life, Mamdoh says. He philosophizes that life is made of stages, and right now, he prioritizes his business and his family.
Originally from Iraq, Mamdoh immigrated in 2008 and has lived in Rochester and Greece ever since. In 2014, Mamdoh startedworkingasadriverattheBuffaloRd.Salvatore’slocation, working for two years while attending nursing school. Upon graduation, Mamdoh worked as a registered nurse at U of R for 6 years.
Mamdoh always loved Salvatore’s food and cooking, so when his friend purchased and opened the Canandaigua Salvatore’s location in 2021, Mamdoh was inspired to pursue his own location. Learning about the Salvatore’s franchise foundations that help owners thrive, Mamdoh felt confident he’d be able to successfully run the business, so he purchased the Avon location in July 2022. While he currentlyworksinnursing per diem to maintain his certifications, thebusiness and his family life keep Mamdoh hopping.
Mamdoh started the business openeyed and realistic, with post-COVID labor and materials challenges as well as rising inflation ever since, he knew challenges were inevitable. But he also understood economics. He knows it goes in circles, explaining that although the economy is low right now, with soaring prices, it will settle down and rebound.
Operating the Avon Salvatore’s location has been a success, he says, and he loves what he does. Mamdoh says his proudest momentwaswheninhisfirstyearofownership, theAvonlocation experienced a 35% increase in sales, a record for that location and the highest increase of all locations, which he’s proud of. He attributes his success to sheer discipline and loving what he does, believing in what he does.
He thanks his employees, and specifically credits lifelong Avon resident and longtime Salvatore’s employee, Michelle
Cassidan, who helped him orient himself within the community, connect with people, and has been integral to helping the business be successful overall.
Mamdoh is excited for the future and hopes to a) expand the Avon location to include a bar andmoreofadestination atmosphere, and b) open a second location when he finds the right opportunity.
Mamdoh says the pizza and subs are the location’s hot sellers, of course, with their rolls and pizza dough made by hand on site. Especially popular are steak subs, and at the Avon location, ursdays are hot sub days, with the daily special featuring $10 large cold sub and soda ($12 for hot sub and soda). Mamdoh says customers o en come in raving about how good the sub rolls are, so that’s satisfying.
Also key to the Avon location is its Arthur Treacher’s component, included within the location since 2014. As one of only a few locations across the area, Mamdoh says people o en make special trips to Avon for the nostalgic piscine specialties.
e Avon Salvatore’s caters for organizations, schools, and businesses all around the area. ey contribute regularly to community organizations, participate in myriad community events, and maintain arrangements with various local organizations. Avon and the surrounding area are full of businesses who collaborate to succeed.
To the Avon community, Mamdoh says thank you for the support each year! He says, “It’s a nice, small town with great people. We hope we meet their standards. We hope they like the food we make. We love serving them.”

DID YOU KNOW? When remodeling a home with the ultimate goal of making it more attractive to prospective buyers, homeowners can benefit from taking stock of current trends, including the style of home that’s most popular. According to a 2020 Homes.com survey of more than 5,000 adults across the United States, modern farmhouse is the most favored house style. The survey asked participants to choose from a selection of styles, including mid-century modern ranch, Spanish colonial/ southwest, bohemian craftsman, Italianate, French chateau, and Tudor. The modern farmhouse style was the most popular choice in 42 of the 50 states, proving that home style preference is not beholden to geography. Respondents gave a host of reasons for favoring the modern farmhouse look, including that the style is “aesthetically appealing but not boring” and that it looks “simple, cozy, and not too busy.”

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE
Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues.
The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association.
Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes.
Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory.
The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels.
Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels.
Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables,
whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues.
Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels.
Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them.
A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together.
Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

Here’s a Tip
* Need to save money grocery shopping? Studies show that if you shop when the store is least busy, you’ll make smarter decisions. Try shopping at off-peak hours, such as later in the evening or early in the morning. Or try your store on Wednesday, traditionally the least busy day of the week.
* “I was making cookies last week and needed to roll out the dough. I couldn’t find my rolling pin anywhere. In a pinch, I pulled a bottle of wine off my wine rack and wrapped it tightly in plastic. It did the trick. I’m thinking I might just save the next empty bottle and clean the label off of it to use. I can store it right there in my rack!” -- O.V. in Oregon
* Add shredded veggies to tomato sauce to up the veggie quotient. Many vegetables can be added without adding many calories and will not change the taste that much. Try carrots, squash or sweet potatoes. You can even add a tablespoon or two of canned, pureed pumpkin.

Did You Know?
If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, which causes stiffness, swelling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. While psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people between the ages of 30 and 50.
TIPS FOR COMFORTABLE CAMPING
Adjust sound accordingly - Some people love drifting off to sleep to the sound of crickets, while others are kept awake by the nighttime sounds of nature.Foam earplugs can mute some of those sounds and even the snoring of a tent partner. Campers also can set up a charged smartphone with a white noise app and use that to block out unwanted noises.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have a contractor coming soon to renovate our kitchen. I plan to keep my cat, “Freya,” out of the way and in a separate room during the day. But at night, she’ll want to wander the house. How do I keep her out of the kitchen? -- Jim in Portland, Maine
DEAR JIM: Cats are pretty wily, and I’m sure Freya will try to find a way around any barriers you set up to keep her out of the kitchen.
Send us a photo! and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it!
Submit at: gvpennysaver.com under Share With Us or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
e best way to dissuade her from exploring the construction area, therefore, is to tempt her away with better distractions. at means moving her food and water to a new location far from the construction area (but out of heavy foot traffic) and giving her treats and attention whenever she opts to stay in the living room with you or near her bedding and food.
At night, tighten the barriers around the kitchen -- if there’s a door, close it. If there is plastic sheeting up, tack it to surrounding walls and tape it to the floor. Put a sheet of plywood across the entrance if necessary.
Inside the work area, make sure that the contractors put away all sharp tools and cover any containers tightly. ey should clean up any debris at the end of each day and use a wet-dry vacuum to pick up sawdust and dirt. Any spills need to be cleaned completely. is will reduce the risk to Freya if she manages to get into the kitchen, and it’s just good practice.
Readers, how did you keep your pets safe during home renovations? Tell me at ask@pawscorner.com.

VENT BRIGHTER
Traffic circle in [local town]
The traffic circle is annoying. What’s even more frustrating is that people don’t use blinkers when they’re exiting. It causes traffic to back up unnecessarily & makes delays for people to enter the circle. It’s annoying and rude. When you learned to drive, didn’t you learn to use your blinkers?
A good deed
Garbage filled park
I want to thank the kind and honest person who found my credit card at the Webster Post Office a few weeks ago and returned it to staff. It just proves that there are good, honest people who do the right thing. I appreciate it very much and thank you.
My husband and I noticed piles of garbage at our local Town Park. We both decided to pick it up, since there is a constant flow of people. We filled 2 garbage bags with shoes, soup containers, broken glass, clothes, coffee cups and doggy poo bags! Nasty!
Delicious Pizza!
Last Friday, I thought I ordered a pizza from a local pizza shop, but the order never made it through. I contacted the restaurant and the person who picked up the phone said that he would give me a free pizza, size large, including a brownie! If more people could be this kind I think that the community would be so much better! Thank you again!
When we brought this to the attention at the Town office across the street, the lady in charge of the parks department said that “The Park is closed but when it’s open they pick up.” When asked if we could throw the trash in their dumpster, she rolled her eyes and called someone else, while laughing at my husband. Pick up after yourselves so that others do not have to- clearly the Town could care less about the safety of others!

DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come.According to the U.S.Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.
