SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS Why replace aging headlight bulbs? Few drivers include headlight bulb replacement in their vehicle maintenance routines. But old headlight bulbs can drastically compromise visibility at night, when drivers’ visual acuity is naturally reduced by as much as 70 percent. As headlight bulbs age, the effects of exposure to sunlight, ozone and pollution can significantly reduce their light output. According to Philips Automotive, a leading manufacturer of vehicle lighting components, headlight bulbs begin to project significantly less light within two to three years of their initial usage, producing dimmer light outputs that compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers. For example, new headlight bulbs capable of projecting 240-foot beams in front of a vehicle may see that projection dwindle to just 160 feet within two to three years.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and this special holiday serves to honor all those women who devote so much time and effort to their families. While gifts and other trinkets are certainly part of the celebration, a vast majority of children opt to treat Mom to a night out on the town come Mother’s Day. Not only does this give mom a night off from cooking, but also it presents an opportunity to get dressed up and spend time together as a family.

* Earth Day got me thinking about how many plastic bottled beverages my family goes through. I have found six glass reusable bottles that can be run through the dishwasher, and I store them in the refrigerator in a cardboard six-pack holder. I still want the convenience of grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, but I feel better knowing that I’m not contributing to a plastic problem.” -- JoAnn * Using ice-cold sour cream instead of ice-cold water in your pie crust recipe will give you a flakier crust.

* “If you love to burn candles as much as I do, consider storing them in the refrigerator for a day or so before burning them. I swear, it makes them burn evenly. Someone told me this once, and I tried it and have been doing it ever since. No more crooked candles.” -- J.L. in Tennessee * When traveling for more than a few days, stick your plants into the bathtub with a little bit of water. They’ll soak it up, and you won’t have to have someone come over and water your plants. This will only work for a week at most, though.” -- J.M. in Louisiana * Kitchen remodels can be expensive, but when your kitchen isn’t usable, that’s even more of an expense. Instead of opting for takeout food, set up an alternate kitchen to save money. A microwave, toaster oven, coffee pot and a small dorm-style fridge can take care of a lot of your needs in the short term. * Planning on putting in some new plants or sprucing up your garden this spring? Check with your town’s yard-waste recycling center about free mulch or compost. Many facilities offer these to their residents.

Take-out is an option. Families can treat Mom to a dinner out, without really having to go out. Many restaurants offer takeout service, so you will not be limited to pizza or Chinese. Mother is a name held sacred By most mortals of the earth; It means great love and sacrifice From the very day of birth, A love that’s so full of beauty, So tender, so very true! Something, seemingly, from Heaven That has come to me and you. There’s no love so understanding And so faithful to the end As a Mother’s love—God bless her!— That to us our Lord did send. ~Gertrude Tooley Buckingham, “Mother” (1940s)

MOTHER’S MOTHER S DA DAY AY
The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served.

HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING My Mother’s hands, so thin and work-worn, Were loved by me as jewels, rare, For they had rocked me in my cradle, And, lovingly, they’d stroked my hair. They worked for me, both night and morning; They helped to smooth away my fears, For never were these dear hands idle; I think of them with love and tears! My Mother’s hands to me were precious: I thought their beauty was sublime; I felt no harm on earth could touch me If they were near me all the time! ~Gertrude Tooley Buckingham, “My Mother’s Hands” (1940s)

PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.

you might assume filtered water offers the purest form of hydration, it turns out rainwater has the advantage. Here are six reasons why rainwater is more beneficial: 1.) Decreased Chemical Toxicity, 2.) Higher Oxygen Content, 3.) 100% Soft Water, 4.) Naturally Acidic, 5.) Organic Material Might be Present, 6.) and a High Concentration of Nitrates.
All six of these are good for your plants. Collecting rainwater can be as simple as placing a pail out before a rainstorm. HOW COMMUNITIES CAN RECOGNIZE NURSES
RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Drain and oven cleaners: Many drain and oven cleaners contain lye (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide), a chemical derived from salt or wood ash that is used to break down other substances, particularly those that are sticky. Lye is quite caustic in high amounts and extremely alkaline, which can cause burns and skin irritation. Lye is also found in soaps and detergents. When handled correctly in safe amounts, lye can be used safely. However, it can be dangerous if it gets into the hands of children or is touched by pets.
Celebrate holidays that honor nurses as a community. The American Nurses Association notes that National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6 and ends on May 12. Though National Nurses Week is not a federal holiday, communities can still come together during the week to highlight the work their local nurses do. Township or other local officials can encourage businesses in the community to offer special discounts to nurses during the week, while schools can take part in collective efforts to thank nurses. For example, students from all grades can work on a banner thanking nurses and then showcase the banner by the entryway to campus so passing motorists can see it.

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Cause of Chronic Cough Has Doctors Stumped ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I picked up a cough while traveling in Europe more than two years ago. No other symptoms have ever presented. Since that time, I have received every test imaginable, including spirometry, multiple breathing tests, CT scans, X-rays and most recently a bronchoscopy. Nothing was discovered through any of these tests. Other than the cough, I am very healthy. The cough is driving me crazy, however. I have been prescribed every type of medication, and nothing helps. My doctors are at a standstill and have nothing further to offer. I don’t know where to go from here, but I know I can’t live my life with this cough. I avoid a lot of personal interaction because it is so disruptive to constantly be coughing. I would greatly appreciate your help with this, and any advice regarding what steps need to be taken next. -- P.M. ANSWER: Chronic cough (lasting more than several months) is most frequently a result of acid reflux, asthma or postnasal drip, although there are many more causes, including infection, which would be a concern given that you have a clear idea of when it started. Despite an extensive evaluation for cough, it is not that uncommon that people are left with no explanation but with a persistent cough. There are other, less-common treatments at this point, some of which your doctors might not have tried. The first is the medication gabapentin (Neurontin). This is used for a condition called laryngeal neuropathy, and I have had a few spectacular cases where the cough disappears entirely. People have written saying that their doctor prescribed the medication for them after reading it in the column and they also had relief, even after decades of persistent coughing, so I think this condition may be more common than I have ever thought. A second has been a cough suppressant. I am very cautious about using opiate drugs, and it is certainly not appropriate for some people, but cautious use of tramadol in selected patients has been successful in reducing, but not eliminating, cough. Just yesterday in the clinic, one of the residents I supervise had a patient with chronic cough who had dramatic improvement through the use of speech therapy. Looking it up today, I find trials showing significant improvement, if modest, with this approach, as well as several ongoing trials. Given the potential side effects of gabapentin and tramadol, I think I will be making more referrals to my speech and language pathology colleagues, and suggest you speak with your doctors about some of these options. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia: • Trouble communicating or finding words. • Difficulty completing complex tasks. • Challenges with planning and organization. • Episodes of confusion and disorientation. • Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party. • Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations. Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are other types of dementia. The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia. Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may mistake for Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that people with DLB often have not only memory loss and cognitive problems common in Alzheimer’s, but they also display initial or early symptoms such as sleep disturbances, well-formed visual hallucinations, slowness, gait imbalance or other Parkinsonian movement features, which can lead to misdiagnosis.

DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.
Are Irresponsible Owners the Bane of Dog Parks? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: When I first adopted my Collie mix “Sara,” I went to the dog park near my apartment every morning. I thought it would be a great place for a year-old puppy to socialize with other dogs and humans. A year later, I no longer take her to the dog park if there are any other dogs there -- which means taking pre-dawn walks or bypassing the park entirely. I quickly learned that while many dog owners are responsible people who train and socialize their dogs, others don’t train them at all, or train them inadequately. On Sara’s first day, a huge dog ran up, snarling and barking at both of us. The dog’s owner just sat on a bench, waving and yelling, “He’s friendly,” while Sara cowered behind my legs. A few days later, that same dog got in a vicious fight with two other dogs. Because we continued to have negative experiences with other dogs (and their owners), making it impossible to train and socialize Sara, I’ve stopped going there. I don’t think dog parks are a great idea anymore, even though I live in an urban area and green spaces are important for dogs. What’s your take? -- Hannah J. in Boston DEAR HANNAH: I’m really sorry that happened to Sara and you, and you’re doing the right thing by taking her at uncrowded times. Overcrowded parks, resource-guarding and aggressively playful dogs can make it a negative experience. Dog parks are a community resource, and it’s important for dog owners to work together to make the park work. Find out if there’s a volunteer committee for your particular park. If not, and you want to keep using the dog park, consider forming a group to address behavior and other issues. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com.

Give the gift of sweet treats. What better way to highlight mom’s sweetness than with some delicious treats made just for her? Whether you decide to whip up some homemade confections in the kitchen or visit a nearby store for something decadent, mom will no doubt appreciate the chance to indulge on her big day.
Like daffodils, freesia are long-lasting, meaning mothers will still be enjoying them long after Mother’s Day has come and gone. The inviting fragrance of freesia makes bouquets of these flowers popular choices for Mother’s Day gifts. Freesia also come in many colors, proving Mother’s Day gift givers a greater chance of finding flowers their mothers will love.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day an official holiday in 1914. After he was persuaded by Anna Jarvis, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared that the second Sunday of every May would be Mother’s Day. In his first Mother’s Day proclamation, Wilson stated that the holiday offered a chance to “[publicly express] our love and reverence for the mothers of our country,” according to History.com. Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles What Lured Us Back to the Senior Center? The too-young staffers at the senior center finally figured out that we’re not coming back until COVID is gone. And it’s not gone. In some areas it’s easing up a bit, but here it’s still going strong. We’re not willing to risk contagion by dashing in the door of the senior center and pretending things are back to normal. At least once a week the center sends out emails and gets few replies in response. Come to the Ladies Lunch served indoors? No thanks. Experiment with still life photography in the meeting room, with vases, statuettes and fruit provided? No. We held out, refusing as a group to be party to any potential COVID-spreading indoor activity. Finally, the staff got it. They went with videos. The art classes will be online. The book club will have an online discussion, with a link to how to log in to the meeting. And the exercise classes will be posted online so everyone can stretch and work out at home. But it was the offer of free haircuts that broke our resolve. Some of us haven’t been in a salon for two years. The rules were specific. Stay in our car until we were handed an at-home COVID test, which we would take in the car. If it proved to be negative, we could proceed to the next step (one person at a time), which was to sit on a chair in the hall inside the right-side door of the center and wait for our turn. When the person ahead of us was finished (down the hall in the kitchen), she would be escorted out the left-side door to the parking lot. It was glorious. We each came out of the left-side door with a spring in our step, freshly relieved of two years of unruly hair. Staff should have thought of this before.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural.

Thank you! - Anna Animal Hospital Praises A huge thanks goes out to Dr. Chris and Megan! Our furry friend slipped a disk in his back late in the afternoon on April 4th. We called York Animal Hospital, and Dr. Chris was leaving within the hour. She was in the emergency care units and told us to get there ASAP. When we arrived, Dr. Chris and Megan were waiting for us. We are now in the third week, and our furry friend is improving every day, taking two steps on April 22nd. Recycling It's pretty sad when you call [local town] Code Enforcement, [local town] Hall, and [others] to find a solution to businesses not recycling, and you pretty much get an answer of "Oh well." No one seems to know or care. So as all these cans, glass, and junk get thrown onto the ground, remember, you have children and grandchildren who have to live on this dirty earth. Why can't people just do the right thing?
Enough already! Am I the only one who’s sick of businesses, companies, services, and retailers overusing the excuse of COVID? Most of these are still trying to increase profits even though supply, laborers, and inflation are affecting all of us. Some still allow personnel to work from home which leaves fewer people to actually provide services to customers. Eliminate the government “freebies” to force people to actually work for their money. Stop giving free money to renters and get them back to work. Quit stealing from the taxpayers and get us back to where we were. The COVID excuse being made is just that: an excuse! Not a Drag Strip! Moving to this beautiful town over 10 years ago was the best decision my family could have made. It’s such a beautiful town with friendly neighbors. However, we couldn’t be more upset with the way most of the younger generations use [local street] in [local town] as a “drag strip." Living on this street is absolutely beautiful, and the 30 miles a hour limit should be enforced. There are many that hit the stop sign on center and then use the straight away as if it’s 390 in a 65mph zone. It’s 30mph or slower. Please slow down. There are autistic children that live in this area as well as family pets. Let’s be safe and slow down. Tomorrows are never guaranteed. We would hate to see something happen to children, walkers, runners, family pets, etc. Slow it down, please!

Happy Mother’s Day! 9 Global Traditions Inspire Us as We Celebrate Mom BY MAKAYLA HOLLIMAN & ELIJAH ROBINSON
I
t’s that time again! Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to make the mothers in your life feel special, loved, and respected—especially our own mothers who loved us first and continue to love us with unwavering faith. Mother’s Day D is a big event in the United States, but did you know many countries around the world also set aside a special time to celebrate mothers? We gathered fun and unique Mother’s Day traditions from nine countries around the globe, and we hope you find something new to add to your Mother’s Day celebrations!
France
Mother’s Day, “Fête des Mères,” occurs on the last Sunday of May or the first Sunday of June. Fête des Mères originated during the Napoleonic era during which families with a large number of children were presented with medals as part of an effort to promote large families and curb low birth rates. Some parts of France still honor this tradition and present moms with medals on Mother’s Day, known as Médaille de la Famille. It is customary to make a bouquet cake for mom, followed by a family dinner. Children typically give flowers, jewelry, perfumes, handmade gifts, handwritten poems, and chocolates as presents.
Germany
Mother’s Day, celebrated on the second Sunday of May, is known as Muttertag and was first celebrated in 1922. Here, celebrating mothers extends further than the women of the house; it pays tribute to the mothers of the universe. Carried out with a high degree of pomp and circumstance, this day sees children give their moms gifts and cards, red carnations celebrating mothers who are alive, and white carnations honoring mothers who have passed away. Surprises are common, and travel tickets are a traditional present. The family also makes a homemade dinner to give mom a break.
Ethiopia
Ethiopia holds its celebration of mothers in the early fall and hosts festivals that honor its religion. Ethiopia holds a festival called “Antrosht” which is dedicated only to moms. Families come together for large meals and celebrations. Daughters bring vegetables and cheese while sons bring meat, prepare meat hash, and stage performances featuring their family heroes.
India
Like Ethiopia, India also holds its celebration of mothers in the early fall and hosts festivals that honor its religion. In India, this celebration lasts for 10 days. Hindus honor Durga, the goddess of mothers, at the Durga Puja festival. This religious ceremony hosts family reunions centered around the traditional story of how Durga returns to her parents to show her own children off to them. The festivities continue with making food, giving gifts and decorating homes.
Italy
In Italy, mothers are honored on “La Festa della Mamma,” observed the second Sunday of May. The mother is regarded as the most important person in the family, and children must call if they cannot come home that day. While she is honored year-round, on this day, she is pampered from dawn to dusk. Small presents, roses, and handwritten poetry are popular gifts, while cards are not commonly given. Lunch is eaten out to give moms a break, and

at the end of the day, mothers receive a heart-shaped cake made for them by their children.
Japan
Japan’s customs for Mother’s Day are entirely different. Here, the holiday was revived after World War II and was used to console mothers who had lost children during the war. Today, Mother’s Day is observed on the second Sunday of May with red or pink carnations as well as help with chores and cooking. Japanese families make traditional Tamagoyaki or Chawanmushi dishes, while children make handmade gifts or portraits for their mothers.
Mexico
In Mexico, Mother’s Day—“La Dia de la Madre”—is celebrated on May 10th. Each year, women are celebrated with mariachi serenades, special mass services, and children’s performances. They are also treated out to lunches and dinners. No matter what day May 10th falls on, Mexican families always make time to celebrate their mothers.
Peru
One of Peru’s most important events, Mother’s Day, is celebrated for an entire week with much anticipation leading up to the second Sunday of May. This celebration honors not only mothers, but all the women in the home. Families organize lunches, dinners, parties and trips throughout the week, and children prepare events and festivities. Mothers are given the opportunity to visit exhibits, museums, and festivals for free. They are also read poetry and stories, given gifts, flowers, and treats, served dinner, and entertained by their children. Peruvian families also visit cemeteries to honor their dearly departed mothers and grandmothers, bringing flowers, balloons, and other salutations for the graves. No mother is forgotten in this showing of appreciation for a mother’s love and sacrifice.
United Kingdom
British families hold Mother’s Day, referred to as Mothering Sunday, on the 4th Sunday of Lent. Dating back to the 1600s, England was the first country in the world to create a holiday specifically for celebrating mothers. Shifting away from its historic roots as a day of showing respect to one’s “mother church,” Mothering Sunday increasingly centered around celebrating moms across Britain. Flowers are the most popular gifts, and the most common types of flowers children give their mothers are roses, carnations, and chrysanthemums. It is also traditional to give mum a rich almond cake called ‘Mothering Cake’ or ‘Simnel Cake.’

Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one.

Puzzle Answers This Week
Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located.
ATHLETES TURNED ACTOR
Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures. EMPLOYMENT

Eating Out on Mother’s Day Hire a sitter for young kids. Although Mother’s Day is a chance for the entire family to spend time together, the main goal is to ensure Mom’s comfort and happiness. If very young children are in tow, she may not be able to relax and enjoy her meal. Infants will need to be fed, and toddlers may be easily distracted. Have a sitter watch little ones when adults are dining out, and then Mom can enjoy time with the kids when she returns home for more celebrating.
