AVOID HOT WEATHER AUTOMOTIVE BREAKDOWNS When the weather warms, many people take to the outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and rising temperatures. Summer road trips or vacations are the norm, but it is important to realize that hot weather can take its toll even on a new, well-maintained vehicle. High temperatures can cause all sorts of damage to a vehicle, from zapping battery power to overtaxing the cooling system. Recognizing potential hotweather risks and performing routine checks on the vehicle are the keys to keeping vehicles in top form.

AVON TEAMS COME BACK STRONG WITH 6 SECTIONAL WINS! BY AMANDA DUDEK
W
hen times are hard, there are always those who rise to the challenge and turn it into opportunity. Six Avon Central School teams did just that, bringing home six Section titles this season. The families, coaches, and community couldn’t be any prouder! The victorious varsity teams were Football, Baseball, Softball, Cheer, Boys Basketball and Girls Soccer. Avon Athletic Director and Football Coach Andy Englert says while this is the football team’s seventh Section V title (1983, 1986, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2021), the extraordinary circumstances as well as the team’s close relationship with the community and each other made it exceptional. “It was a different year with football starting in March, but I was very proud of the team’s performance throughout the season,” he said. “As a coach, I felt that the team had a special bond and believed that they could finish the season on top!” Softball Coach Pete Leone was struck not only by his team’s performance but by their extra effort, as well. “I’m extremely proud of the hard work and dedication of the players throughout the season,” he praised. “Without a season in 2020 and with only a two-week preseason this year, the girls had to put in extra time to improve fundamentally—and they did. They came in early on game days for extra hitting and fielding— something I’ve never had a team do previously.” The softball team’s hard work clearly paid off, netting them their first ever sectional title. “No Avon Braves softball team had ever won either a division title or a sectional title, so this year’s sectional title was quite an accomplishment! It was both a pleasure and privilege to coach them, and I can’t think of a more deserving group of champions!” Coach Pete Leone The fact that sports had finally returned after more than a year-long hiatus only served to sweeten these victories! “We were excited to hear there was actually going to be a season!” exclaimed Cheer Coach Shaun Loomis. “It gave the girls the opportunity to do what they love. They were committed and determined to be the best.” Loomis added that masks and a short season didn’t slow these students down, noting “these girls didn’t let any of that stop them from achieving their goals.” Virtually and without the encouraging cheers of fans, friends, and family; Avon’s cheer team “came out on top. As Loomis observed, “They achieved two 1st place titles along with being crowned grand champions. They also earned LCAA grand champions and 1st place. The biggest achievement was winning the Section V Class C1 title—I couldn’t be prouder as a coach to watch these athletes never give up and work together to get what they wanted!” Boys Basketball and Baseball Coach, Rob Fries, noticed the same focused determination from his players. “Just being back on the field in 2021 was pretty special—our guys worked hard to learn from our mistakes early on and committed to using those mistakes to improve.” The baseball team and the boys basketball team showed just how much they appreciated this unexpected gift of a season with their drastic improvement and leading in the baseball game to what Coach Fries calls, “an overtime thriller in the finals.” “It was even more special because we were able to do it on our home court,” explained Fries. “The last two weeks the team really came together and believed in each other, and you could see us peaking at the right time.” The team’s finals game ended in cinematic perfection with a

victory in the bottom of the ninth to the enthusiastic cheers of Avon fans. “It was a culmination of a great year for Avon athletics,” said Fries. “It is a moment that will last forever for these guys.” This sentiment was echoed by Girls Soccer Coach, Katlyn Bennetti when she said she believed her players would “remember this unique season for the rest of their lives.” Coach Bennetti praised her team working hard independently and for rising above uncertainty to victory. “We had many Zoom meetings and were never promised tomorrow,” she recalled. “We stayed positive, pushed through, and managed to have a very successful, fun season. I am so happy for this year’s group of seniors!” Each of the 6 winning teams were escorted home by Avon Fire Trucks, lights on, sirens screaming. The whole town could hear it, and fans went down to the circle to see them do victory laps in the busses! This “Winner’s Welcome” is such a fun Avon community tradition! Grateful for this incredible season, Coach Englert concluded, “Thank you to the Administration, parents, community, and fans for their support throughout the 2021 season!”

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On July 14, 1798, Congress passes the Sedition Act. The act permitted the prosecution of individuals who voiced or printed what the government deemed to be malicious remarks about the president or the U.S. government. * On July 17, 1920, Nils Bohlin, the Swedish engineer and inventor responsible for the three-point lap and shoulder seatbelt, is born. Before 1959, only two-point lap belts were available in automobiles. * On July 18, 1969, after leaving a party on Chappaquiddick Island, Sen. Edward “Ted” Kennedy of Massachusetts drives an Oldsmobile off a bridge into a tide-swept pond. Kennedy escaped the submerged car, but his passenger, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, did not. The senator did not report the fatal car accident for 10 hours.
Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

Petty behavior To the officer who was giving out numerous parking tickets on Friday evening, July 2nd to the people who parked at the abandoned [local building] in [local town] in order to simply walk across the street and attend [local event]. Seriously? For many of these people, it was the first time in over a year that they were finally able to get out and do something fun, and your response is for them to return to their car and see that they have been slapped with a parking fine for parking at a vacant premises? Wake up! Community relations do matter!
S E V RA Thank you so much! Tom Martin: what a true gentleman! My father always told my brothers before they left the house each time to behave like a gentleman and a scholar at all times. Tom, you certainly are one, a country one at that from beautiful Caledonia. Thank you for calling me about finding my wallet. Left it on the top of my car! Thanks, landscapers! It’s so sad to see how the public and employers treat these hard-working underpaid landscapers. Mind you, most of these landscapers worked through the whole pandemic in all kinds of weather, and physical jobs for peanuts! Show some love for these true hard-working men and women!
Borrowing from Social Security I’m 85 yrs old. I started working when I was 14 yrs old. I paid into Social Security until I stopped working when I was almost 76 years old. I can remember several occasions when our Social Security fund was robbed. Earlier this year, $435 billion was stolen (if my memory is correct), from Social Security. In the last month while there were cries of the imminent bankruptcy of Medicare, billions were stolen again. Medicare is not a gift; we paid into that fund for many years. Each month, I pay over $148. Higher wage earners pay hundreds more a month. So the story goes again. Also, Medicaid and Medicare are always referred to in the same breath. People do not pay for Medicaid.
Independence Day article Thanks to Ken Paulson for his story on the Declaration of Independence! We appreciated reading that! Huge thanks! I would like to say a huge thank you to the Ontario County Sheriff, the West Bloomfield Ambulance, Canandaigua Ambulance, the ALS Crew, and all volunteers or not who acted so fast on June 22nd, 2021, around 3:15pm. The first responder on scene was an Ontario County Sheriff who replaced my husband’s tourniquet with a much better one, and everyone’s wisdom on artery lacerations saved my husband’s life! He had cut his thigh and was bleeding out fast. I called 911 and told the dispatcher what I needed, and they, in turn, had a Sheriff in the area. God Bless You All! Thanks as well to the nurses and technicians on 3 East and ER and surgical doctors and nurses. Surgery took about four hours! Started at 10pm and ended about 2am. I ask people to try to be kind, remember police, fire, ambulance, etc. are all here to help. Shake someone’s hand and tell them how appreciated they are, please. More praise, less grumble. Prayers and appreciation to all of you who had part in saving another life! You all are the best! You give us hope! Stay safe; stay well. Blessings from the man with a box cutter & wife.

POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF ROOF TROUBLE Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Keeping Track At some point we need to start making notes. Maybe you’re not there yet. But that day might sneak up on you when you discover that you’ve forgotten to mail the check for your property taxes. Or worse, when a police officer stops you and says your license tags expired -- three months ago. Forgetting the car tag might be excusable if your town no longer sends out notices. Or if you had the same vehicle for eight years and tags were always due the same month each year, and now you have a new vehicle with a different due date. But when you’ve lived in the same home for 30 years and you forget to pay the property taxes ... that’s when you know you need to start making notes. A good way to do this is with an annual calendar. When you flip the page, there in bright letters are your tasks for the month. If one of the tasks happens to fall in the first week of the next month, make a note in the last week of the previous month. Use the previous year’s calendar, flip through all the pages, make your notes and you’ll be all set. ... Unless those tiny squares just won’t do the trick, which is possible if you’re still working or have a long list of tasks to accomplish on a weekly basis. For many years I’ve used an 8-by-11 notebook. Each page is a week, divided with lines into six boxes, dated. The weekend, when theoretically there are no urgent tasks, gets Saturday and Sunday in one box. It might seem silly to start keeping such a detailed calendar of things you need to do. After all, haven’t you always remembered when the car tags are due? Until you don’t, and are reminded by a police officer. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Join author John Strazzabosco for a virtual presentation and Q&A about his book 90 Feet Under - What Poverty Does to People. According to the author, “The book was written in an effort to find answers that plagued me as to why poverty has remained so resilient. By writing a list I began to understand that the problem has so many roots in disparate places that defy understanding, until I accepted the enormity of the whole assault on the mind and body. The causes I’ve identified are neurological, physiological, linguistic, and crammed with fear, cold and hunger.” This event will meet online using Zoom. Email invitations will be sent out to registrants 12-24 hours in advance.

HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

What Is Treatment for a Fatty Liver?
Convenient Brighton location 200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old woman. I am 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weigh 107 pounds. I take no medication. When I went to the doctor last week, he found that my alkaline phosphatase was 176, my ALT 10, and my AST 11. He told me I had fatty liver and to get a scan, but I had no way to get to the place to have it done. He did not say anything else about it. I have no symptoms. Does this sound like fatty liver to you? I did not really like my doctor, but with my insurance it is hard to change doctors. If I do have fatty liver, is there anything I can do for it? -- J.F. ANSWER: Fatty liver is an increasingly common problem. Risk factors include being overweight and having diabetes, high blood pressure and abnormal blood cholesterol levels. Alcohol use is also a cause of fatty liver, and all people with fatty liver are strongly recommended to abstain from alcohol entirely. The primary treatment is diet and weight loss. It sounds like there was some missed communication between you and your doctor. Fatty liver is a possibility; however, it does not seem likely to me, as you have not identified any of the risk factors, and you are certainly not overweight (if anything, you are a bit underweight). Further, although the alkaline phosphatase can be elevated in fatty liver (yours is just a bit high), it is more common for AST and ALT to be elevated, which yours are not. An ultrasound scan is a good, but not definitive, way of looking for fatty liver. A liver biopsy is still the definitive test, but it’s often not done in people whose history, physical exam and ultrasound are all suggestive. A slightly abnormal alkaline phosphatase does not necessarily mean you have a liver problem. Bone issues (fractures, Paget’s disease of bone, high thyroid and parathyroid hormone levels) can cause a high alkaline phosphatase, too. Additional liver tests -- checking the GGT level or specifically what kind of alkaline phosphatase you have (by isoenzyme analysis) -- can make the source of the elevated alkaline phosphatase clearer. Getting an ultrasound scan and additional blood tests is a reasonable place to start. Unfortunately, lack of confidence in your physician is a different problem. If you really can’t get a new doctor, then you need to have a conversation about proceeding with evaluation in such a way that you can do so while being confident that you are getting good advice.

RECOGNIZE SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE IN DOGS What is heat stroke? Dogs suffer from heat stroke when their body temperatures exceed 104 F and the built-in mechanisms they rely on to cool themselves - including panting - cease to function properly. But any temperature 103 F or above is considered abnormal. According to PetMD, heat stroke is a form of non-fever hyperthermia that can lead to multiple organ dysfunction.

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Passw ord protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone ow ners passw ord-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the w rong hands, you could make it very eas y for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity. Review your social netw ork privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social netw ork sites. As the use of social netw orking continues to i ncrease, it’s expected that the use of malw are w ill rise, too. Cybercriminals are alw ays looking for w ays to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of w hat apps you insta ll, and never “ friend” someone you don’t know. Consider getting extra protection. There are a grow ing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as w ell as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, M obile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity M oni toring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On July 18, 1940, Franklin Roosevelt, who first took office in 1933 as America’s 32nd president, is nominated for an unprecedented third term. He would eventually be elected to a record four terms.
Help Fight Off Fleas With Brewer’s Yeast DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Regarding cats with fleas, I have had great success eliminating fleas by adding powdered brewer’s yeast to their food. One of my cats even licked it out of her bowl dry. Brewer’s yeast is usually available at health food stores. -- Suzanne F., via email DEAR SUZANNE: Thank you for the tip! Brewer’s yeast is a great nutritional supplement for cats and dogs, and many owners have observed that their pets have fewer fleas when it’s added to their food. It can certainly be a strong asset to a well-rounded flea fighting strategy. For cats and small dogs, sprinkle about half a teaspoon on their food at mealtimes. For medium dogs up to 30 pounds, increase that to a teaspoon. For every 30 pounds over that, add a teaspoon of brewer’s yeast. Consistency is important. Brewer’s yeast, unfortunately, does not repel ticks, so pets -- even those who stay indoors -- should be checked regularly throughout the spring, summer and fall for these little hangers-on. Brush your pet’s coat daily to remove flea eggs and any remaining fleas. Owners may need to use stronger flea and tick treatments in addition to brewer’s yeast, but it’s still a great ally in the fight against fleas. Other flea prevention strategies include vacuuming your home twice a week during peak season to reduce tracked-in fleas and their eggs, and quickly ruffling your pet’s coat with a towel and cleaning their paws when they come indoors. Bathing your dog or cat can help reduce irritation from flea bites, but only use shampoos designed for pets to keep their skin from drying out and becoming more irritated. Send your flea-fighting tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Get cobwebs off a window screen with a lint roller. * Want to make that summer at-home pedicure last? Don’t skip the base coat or a UV topcoat. The base coat will allow the color to adhere evenly and better. Then the topcoat will protect the color from the sun while giving it a little extra shine. * “Use an over-the-door shoe holder to house your makeup and hair accessories, plus jewelry and other personal items. You can trim a curtain or piece of fabric to fit over the length of it, and tie it to the top if it looks too messy in your room.” -- M.K. in North Carolina * Use this trick to freshen your stuffed animals. Dust with baking soda and put several together in a large paper grocery bag until it’s half full. Fold the top of the bag down and shake vigorously. Remove the stuffed friends and shake off any excess baking soda. For good measure, put the dustedoff toys in a low- or no-heat dryer cycle for 10-15 minutes.

* Hashbrowns can be made on a waffle iron. Coat liberally with canola oil or butter-flavored nonstick spray, and add shredded potatoes and finely diced onion. Allow the iron to cook the potatoes to your desired level of crispness, and flip out both sides onto a plate. They will be both crisp and soft! * Honey has amazing properties, and one of them is its antiseptic powers. You can even use it on pimples. Just a tiny dab will help keep bacteria responsible for breakouts from taking over.

According to WorldAtlas.com, the largest city park in the world is Bosque de la Primavera in Guadalajara, Mexico. At 74,132 acres, Bosque de la Primavera is more than 14,000 acres larger than the world’s second largest city park, Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Bosque de la Primavera features the Rio Caliente, a geothermal river, and is home to a massive nature reserve inhabited by wild animals. The largest city park in the United States and fifth largest such park in the world is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve includes 180 miles of hiking trails within its 27,800 acres. And while it might be one of the most recognizable city parks in the world, New York City’s Central Park is not counted among the world’s 20 largest city parks, despite estimates that it draws more than 40 million visitors each year. However, it is one of the most visited places in the United States.

By Lucie Winborne * Had Georgie Fletcher of Australia never signed on to play the mobile game “Words With Friends,” her husband, Simon, might be dead. Georgie struck up a friendship via the game’s chat feature with frequent opponent Beth Legler from Missouri. One day, Georgie told Beth that Simon hadn’t been feeling well. Beth relayed his symptoms to her husband Larry, a doctor, who insisted that the Fletchers go to the hospital immediately. A 99% blockage was discovered near his heart, which, left untreated, would have certainly been fatal.

* The process of things being stretched out and torn apart as they enter a black hole is called spaghettification. * Our senses of taste and smell are cut by 50% and 20%, respectively, during flights, which is why airplane food has never tasted so hot. (“That’s what I’ve been telling you!” said every airplane food chef, ever.) *** Thought for the Day: “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” -- Oliver Wendell Holmes Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones. Vacations don’t have to be taxing. Cut down on some of the stressful aspects of traveling by simplifying and delegating tasks.
Magic Maze FOOD ALLERGY FAST FACTS Food allergies can develop from birth, and some last a lifetime. Others are developed at different ages and may be outgrown. No matter when allergies stop or start, they can be a life-threatening problem for children. Although food allergies may be managed more easily at home, they present different challenges for school-aged children. School nurses and administrative officials should be informed about food allergies, especially if they are severe enough to warrant medical intervention, such as medication. Food allergies are quite common. Consider these allergy facts that can help parents better understand any issues their children might face. • The Food Allergy Research and Education network says nearly 15 million people in the United States, many of whom are children, are affected by food allergies. • One in 13 Canadians, or roughly 2.5 million people, are affected by a food allergy, according to estimates from the Allergy, Genes and Environmental Network. • Around 7 percent of Canadian children under the age of 18 report having at least one food allergy. • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have other related conditions, such as asthma and other allergies. • Food allergies are an immune system response to the food, not a case of digestive intolerance. • Among food allergic children, peanuts are the most prevalent allergen, followed by milk and shellfish, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. • Food allergies can cause everything from mild reactions, such as itchiness or hives, to anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially deadly reaction. • Risk of food allergies increases when there is a parent who suffers from any type of allergic disease - even those beyond food allergies. • A recent study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that children are taking longer to outgrow milk and egg allergies. • Food avoidance remains the best way to prevent symptoms of food allergies. That is why reading product labels is vital. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT Under the Family and Medical Leave Act, women in the United States are entitled to 12 weeks maternity leave. Women can choose to use a portion of that maternity leave even before their children are born if physical limitations are making it challenging for them to continue working. Women should put their health and the safety of their unborn children ahead of their responsibilities at work. In addition, women should not hesitate to speak with their employers about their comfort levels while pregnant. If an issue arises, speak with your boss, who deserves the benefit of the doubt. In some instances, breastfeeding also is protected by law at job sites or at the office. It is best for women to familiarize themselves with breastfeeding policies ahead of time so they can make the proper accommodations. Pregnant women should discuss with their doctors which work activities are permissable and which should be avoided at particular times in the pregnancy. Every effort should be made to avoid toxic substances, and pregnant women should not lift heavy items or engage in any potentially risky physical activity. For more information about workplace rights, visit the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission at www.eeoc.gov.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.
