ADDRESS WINDSHIELD DAMAGE PROMPTLY
Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion.
Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem.
Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield.
Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly.
Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Department of Labor and data from the U.S. Census Bureau, registered nurse is the most common occupation for women in the United States labor force. Slightly less than 2.1 million women worked as registered nurses in 2017, the most recent year for which statistics are available. Such figures are harder to come by in regard to Canada, but Statista reports that the labor participation rate among women in Canada in 2018 was right around 64 percent. That rate marks a slight decrease from its 21st century peak in 2005, when 66.7 percent of women were active members of the Canadian workforce. In the United States, more than two million women worked as secretaries or administrative assistants in 2017, making these professions the second most common occupation among female workers. Elementary and middle school teachers was the third most common occupation for female professionals, employing more than 1.9 million women in 2017. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau also indicates that women have the lion’s share of jobs in an assortment of professions, including preschool and kindergarten teachers, secretaries and administrative assistants, childcare workers, and dental assistants. Women hold at least 92 percent of the jobs in each of those professions in the United States.

TIPS FOR NEGOTIATING WITH CONTRACTORS
Do your homework. Getting the best price typically require shopping around and not settling on the first bid. Experts recommend getting at least three estimates on the same job - and be sure to let each contractor know that you are soliciting multiple bids. This alone may entice a specific contractor to give you his or her best offer up front. Avoid simply choosing the lowest bid. Look at quality of work, reputation and reviews. If you like a costly contractor more than another, see if that contractor is willing to match a lower bid to win the job.

Both the renovation experts at This Old House and the
estate experts at UpNest indicate that at least half of a finished attic must be a minimum of seven feet high and seven feet wide and 70 square feet. Requirements may differ depending on where homeowners live, but that 7-7-70 guideline is generally the minimum requirement. An attic that fails to meet such requirements won’t necessarily be a lost cause, but it might be costly to make adjustments that ultimately align with local codes.

Bumper cars, also called dogems in other English-speaking countries, were the brainchild of inventor Victor Levand, who workedforGeneralElectric.
CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

Evelyn Marie Shoots: 100 Years of Faith, Family, and Creativity
BY EVABELLE EVIE SCOTT
Our mom, Evelyn Marie Shoots, was born in Cuba, NY on August 10, 1924, the first of five daughters for William and Eva Matylas. Mom and Dad, Jay Wallace Shoots, were married October 6, 1945 and celebrated the birth of each of their four children, Evelyn Marie, Jay Wallace, Jr., Evabelle Louise, and James William.
As a tremendous lover of words, she was always writing story ideas and loved coming up with different slogan messages for various products. Evy began entering skill contests where different companies offered prizes for the best slogan or tag line for their products. Over the years, Mom won appliances, a convertible car, and even a $25k dream home in 1955!
Mom’s desire to write her own book of inspirational poetry was her biggest dream. Her desire to share her love for the Lord and bring hope and joy to people was her heart’s biggest wish. rough encouragement from family and friends, her dream came true! Bonita Healy helped with the publication process and Joyce Shutts helped with the book cover photo. us came Grove of Grace
Mom continues to write poems daily. I believe she has written well over 2,000 poems throughout the years.
Mom and Dad also started their own business called Jaycra , focusing on wood and plexiglass artistry. ey sold their specialized items at the Rochester airport, Alpha and Omega Christian Bookstores, Peterson Drug Stores, and many others!
Son, James, admires Mom as industrious. Even in her 70s and beyond, she worked for several companies, helping others who were disabled, etc. She even drove herself from Henrietta to West Greece for one of her jobs.
Daughter, Evy Marie, fondly remembers how she used to draw paper dolls so we daughters could cut them out and design clothes for them.
Mom loved to encourage others by sending cards of all kinds. She sent out hundreds over the years, making dear friends at many post offices. Jim and Evie cheer Mom on as when we take turns driving Mom for daily rides, we point out mail vehicles and she waves as she can and smiles to the drivers. When they see Mom, they wave back.
For over 18 years, Mom and Evie were blessed to do volunteer community food ministry through Wegmans and Lori’s Natural Foods with donations, sorting, bagging, and reloading into their vehicle as some recipients were diabetic or had to have gluten free foods. ey delivered the food to many in need.
Mom daily praised the Lord for all blessings. We praise God for her and have been blessed by her love and joyful presence in our lives. Her favorite Bible scripture, Nehemiah 8:10, “ e joy of the Lord is your strength” is truly how she lives and breathes.
Happy Birthday, Mom! We love you so very much!

Kindness in our community
This past Sunday my husband and I visited a local flea market. Several people saw me struggling to maneuver his wheelchair over the gravel and offered to help. One kind young man pushed him all the way back to the car when he saw that we were ready to leave. It is comforting to know that people can be so compassionate. We are blessed to be surrounded by such kind and thoughtful strangers. Thank you all.
Thank you!
THANK YOU! To the gentleman who picked me up after I fell in the parking lot of a Restaurant on Lake Road
August 1st.
Went to a town park concert. Kids running around. Most enjoying the music. Then there were those who have to talk louder than the music with every other word is the “f” word. What’s wrong with these people? Did they even graduate elementary school? Did their parents teach them any class? One mother, who I applaud, went over and asked them to stop cursing around her child. That lasted only about five minutes. She moved to another spot. Stay home if you’re not there for the music and keep your garbage mouth among yourselves. We don’t want to hear you!
Let’s Fix This Accident Waiting to Happen
I see so many people walking and biking on the roads at night while wearing dark colored clothing. This is an accident waiting to happen. If people don’t realize it, they need to be educated about how dangerous it is to walk on roads without sidewalks without reflective gear or bright clothing! Local colleges should be giving out reflective gear instead of pens or other knickknacks if they aren’t already.
Make this a safe fireworks season
Fireworks displays are a hallmark of summer, and a frequent component of Independence Day celebrations and commemorative events that require a touch of flair. Aweinspiring pyrotechnics shows lure millions of spectators around the world each and every year.
Many people experiment with fireworks on their own, but that can be dangerous. According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, thousands of people are injured by fireworks in the United States each year. Whether purchased legally or on the black market, fireworks pose a considerable threat. Fireworks purchased on the black market may be especially dangerous, as they likely were not subjected to government regulations and inspections.
While summer might be the seasonoffireworks,it’simportant that people who intend to incorporate fireworks into their summer festivities keep safety in mind at all times. The following are a handful of ways to ensure this summer is both fun and safe.
• Attend a municipal firework display rather than hosting your own. Professionals follow certain safety protocols that private citizens are unfamiliar with, and there is often a considerable distance between audiences and professional fireworks displays.
• Exercise caution if fireworks are legal where you live. Maintain a safe distance from fireworks at all times and never allow children to handle fireworks.
• Read and strictly adhere to manufacturer’s instructions.
• Light only one firework at a time, and never attempt to re-ignite a firework that doesn’t light the first time around.
• Do not carry fireworks in your pocket.
• Do not shoot fireworks out of metal or glass containers.
• Always wear safety glasses when lighting fireworks, and keep water or a fire extinguisher around for emergencies.
If not handled properly, fireworks can cause serious injuries to kids and adults. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to leave it to the professionals.

Here’s A Tip

* When preparing outdoor furniture for winter storage, it's important to give it a nice cleaning. If you have a truck, why not load it up and bring it to the local selfserve car wash? e specialized brushes make it easy to clean right there in the back of the vehicle, and a pressure rinse gets soap and dirt from all the nooks and crannies.
* "While at a backyard barbecue now that the weather has turned nice out (down in the South, anyway), I learned this trick from a neighbor. Put hot dogs in the slow cooker. Don't add water or anything. ey taste really good without taking up space on the grill." -- J.V. in Alabama

HOW STUDENTS CAN HANDLE THE TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL
Participate in a school-based transition program. Middle schools frequently host open houses for elementary school students, who can taketoursofthecampus.Parentscantakepartintheseeventswiththeir children. If your schedule does not allow you to attend, then schedule a private tour with the middle school principal or a faculty member. Middle school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds, visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Fosamax Is an Appropriate, Albeit Powerful Medicine for Osteopenia
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 65-year-old, overweight white woman. I recently had a DEXA scan, and based on the results, my general physician prescribed Fosamax for osteopenia.
The first dose created a horrible reaction two days after ingestion, with severe pain in both of my arms, my neck, and my legs. I was in absolute agony for two days, then it cleared up.
With the next dose a week later, I hesitated, but still decided to take it. Two days later, the reaction hit me again, only worse. I could barely walk, and my energy was so low. I spent four days in bed, except to cry when heading to the bathroom. I had not taken my Lasix prescription for those four days, as I could barely make it to the bathroom.
I contacted my doctor, and she discontinued Fosamax. She’s referring me to a rheumatologist. I read that this drug has all my symptoms, plus more, listed under the severe reaction warning. I will not take it again.
Also, a friend told me that this drug is not effective for osteoporosis after more than 20 years of drug tests, and I should not have been prescribed this drug, since I have osteopenia, not osteoporosis. Your thoughts? -- C.W.
ANSWER: Alendronate (Fosamax) is in the class of drugs called bisphosphonates. These are powerful drugs that should not be prescribed lightly. They do have the potential for severe side effects. Severe musculoskeletal pain can occur days or months (sometimes years) after starting the medicine. The Food and Drug Administration has advised prescribers to discuss this possibility with their patients so that the drug can be stopped immediately if it occurs. There are other options available if the person really needs treatment.
Your friend is half right. Powerful drugs like Fosamax are usually not indicated in people who have low bone mass (osteopenia) without osteoporosis. However, a history of a fragility fracture (breaking a bone from minor trauma that isn’t expected to cause a fracture) can make the diagnosis of osteoporosis, even if the bone density isn’t in the usual osteoporotic range. A person can have a high risk of fractures for other reasons, and a clinical tool called the FRAX score helps clinicians identify those who might benefit from treatment.
But your friend is also half wrong. When used appropriately, Fosamax and other bisphosphonate drugs are effective at reducing the risk of fractures. A vertebral body fracture can cause years of pain and be avoided easily, while a hip fracture can be devastating. So, there are very good reasons to prescribe these medicines.
Finally, let me warn readers against complacence in treatment with these drugs. They may be appropriately prescribed for a high-risk person, but most people should not stay on this drug forever. Follow-up DEXA scans should guide therapy, and after three to five years, a conscious decision should be made whether to continue therapy.
Readers who have been on these drugs for more than five years and haven’t had careful follow-ups on their results should ask their doctors whether they still need to be taking them.***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

Tips for parents as kids head Back-to-School
Establish a Routine: Start gradually adjusting your child’s sleep and meal routines a couple of weeks before school starts. is will make the transition smoother and help them get into the school schedule.
Visit the School: If possible, visit the school with your child before the first day. Familiarize them with the surroundings, classrooms, and playground. is can help reduce anxiety about the new environment.
Organize Supplies: Label and organize your child’s school supplies, backpack, and lunchbox. is will make mornings less hectic and ensure they have everything they need.
Set Up a Homework Zone: Create a designated area at home where your child can comfortably do homework. Make sure it’s quiet, well-lit, and stocked with necessary supplies.
Communicate with Teachers: Attend any back-toschool meetings or orientations. Establish open communication with your child’s teachers, so you’re aware of their progress, assignments, and any concerns.
Morning Prep: Plan ahead for busy mornings. Lay out clothes, pack lunches, and have backpacks ready the night before to reduce morning stress.
Healthy Meals and Snacks: Pack nutritious meals and snacks for your child. A well-balanced diet supports their energy levels and concentration throughout the school day.
Stay Involved: Stay engaged in your child’s education by asking about their day, discussing their activities, and showing interest in what they’re learning. is helps build a strong parent-child connection.
Encourage Reading: Set aside time for reading at home. Reading together can foster a love for learning and improve your child’s literacy skills.
Manage Screen Time: Establish screen time rules and limits to ensure that your child has a healthy balance between schoolwork, physical activity, and recreational activities.
Remember that each child is unique, so adapt these tips to suit your child’s personality and needs. By providing a supportive and structured environment, you can help your young child have a positive and successful start to the school year.

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Marzotta
BE A CHAMPION PET SITTER
DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I'm 13 years old and want to make money by being a pet sitter and dog walker. To try it out, my dad suggested that I pet sit for the neighbor who is going on vacation for two weeks. ey agreed! I'm really excited. What tips do you have so I do a good job? -- Austin in Portland, Maine
DEAR AUSTIN: What a great idea! You can try out pet sitting and see if you like it, and your dad is there to give support and advice. Here are a few tips:
-- Bring a notebook and pen with you to every pet sitting visit.
-- Talk to the pet owner before they leave. Get all of the pet's health information. Find out what time they need to be fed and any medications they need to take. Get their veterinarian's number and any special instructions. Find out where the food, treats and leash are stored. (Write this all in the notebook!)
-- Keep to the agreed-upon time to visit and/or walk the pet. It's important for the pet to stay on a regular schedule, and it builds trust with your customer.
-- Do not feed the pet any food or treats not provided (or specified) by the owner.
-- Contact the owner if you have additional questions or if an emergency arises.
ese are just the basics. As you build your pet-sitting empire, you will encounter different situations and will learn the best ways to respond. Your parents can help, and so can that trusty notebook! During and a er every visit, review your notes about the experience and think about how you can do a better job or accomplish certain tasks more effectively.
