Facing Faci Fa ci adversity dv si sity ty is i nothing thin th in new for fo Rochester Roch Ro ch te Lady Lady Lancers L goalkeeper Saundra Baron, both on the soccer field and off it. Baron’s toughness and positive outlook are both impressive qualities developed in her youth while surrounded by her family, her “rock.” That’s why Baron isn’t overly stressed about the Lady Lancers’ start this season. “Obviously, I would love to be getting more wins,” Baron said. “But we’re a young team, and teams in this league are extremely strong. Girls have come back later in the season, and we don’t have our full repertoire of players. There’s still half of the season left, so there’s still time to turn it around!” Soccer has always been central to Baron’s life, something that she attributes to her parents’ Caribbean heritage. Baron’s family shared a soccer goal with their next-door neighbors, and she and her three brothers spent many hours learning the game. Baron was originally a striker; however, she changed position to goalie (where she remained) when she tried out for the Rochester Junior Rhinos. A pivotal moment in her soccer career came while she played for the Trinidad and Tobago National Team. In 2018, she

Even though her team lost to the Americans, the game ended up working out for her. “There were a few professional scouts there, and they were impressed with how I played,” Baron said. “So, I was able to get my first professional contract because of my performance.” When not playing or training for the Lady Lancers, Baron keeps herself busy coaching youth soccer. She works with the Rochester City Soccer League, primarily coaching youth soccer teams and helping young players improve their soccer abilities. Baron credited Nicole Hercules, the woman who formed the City Soccer League, with helping her get in the door, and as the biggest driving force behind this diverse league that is open to all people at no cost. “Working with the City Soccer League is really special for me,” Baron said. “It allows me to make an impression on children at a young age, and to instill a love of soccer. Also, the league is a melting pot of kids from many diversities and—as a Trinidadian—that’s really cool to see.”

Baron also takes care of her father, Geoffrey, with whom she currently lives. He has Alzheimer’s and requires regular doctor visits. Saundra usually takes him.

Meet Soccer Star Saundra!

“My dad is very important to me; in some ways, he’s even more important than soccer,” Baron said. “There have been a couple of instances where I’ve had to turn down professional contracts, because it meant I wouldn’t be able take care of my dad as often as I would like. My family means a lot to me, and taking care of my dad is something that I take very seriously.”

Heritage: Parents from Trinidad and Tobago.

While Baron enjoys being a Lady Lancer, she is open to the possibility of another professional contract in her future, perhaps playing in Europe once again. In the meantime, she will have plenty of work to do, both with the Lady Lancers and with the Trinidad and Tobago national team which will compete in qualifying matches for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Education: Coastal Carolina University, East Carolina University, & Durham University (England) Played for: Rochester Junior Rhinos, regional NC team, Trinidad and Tobago National Team, East Carolina University Pirates, Durham University (England), Maccabi Hadera (Israel), & the Rochester Lady Lancers! Memorable Moment: “It was quite the experience playing over in England. The people take soccer very seriously, but luckily, I do too, so I was able to keep up with the style of play.” Baron helped lead her Durham team to an English club championship! The Art of Home Winemaking at Wineworx! What could be better than sharing a great glass of wine with friends? Making it with them, too! Award-winning home winemakers, Tom Raco and Tony Toscano, will guide you through the winemaking process, from freshly-picked grapes to a unique, signature wine. Spend a bright autumn afternoon picking grapes at a local Finger Lakes vineyard, watching your harvest pressed into juice, or choosing fresh pressed, never concentrated juices from other popular winemaking locations such as California, Chile, Australia and Italy. Then, meet at the Wineworx cellar in Rochester where Tom and Tony will walk you through the measurements, ingredients, and adjustments for the chemistry to begin the fermentation process. Once the initial process is complete, you will return to move your wine from its fermenting container to an aging container. Twice more over the year-long process, you will “rack” your wine from one vessel to another to remove any leaf bits, fragments, and yeast which may have settled. Finally, when your wine is ready to be bottled, Tony and Tom will teach you how to bottle and cork your signature wine. Your handcrafted wine is ready to gift or enjoy—all for around $10 a bottle. Wineworx’ hands-on, immersive experience allows you to fully engage with your wine, sampling it every step of the way, appreciating its development as it evolves into a one-of-a-kind artisanal vintage. Create on your own or share the process with friends and family for a fun, educational, and delicious experience. Either way, you will have the opportunity to tailor your wine to your unique taste with options for sulfides, juice varieties, and to decide whether your wine will be dry, sweet or anywhere in between. When you finish, you have bragging rights, wine you made with your own hands, and great memories—not to mention a better understanding of the process! In fact, some of the customers have submitted their wine to amateur winemaking competitions, both regional and national, and have won gold and silver medals. From college students to senior citizens, couples and groups to singles, people everywhere are discovering the joy of home winemaking. We use ASL in our deaffriendly environment. Wineworx is also pleased to offer winemaking as a new and unique teambuilding activity for your business or organization. *Must be 21 years of age or older to purchase a Wineworx winemaking experience.

YUM!

Sydney Brokaw: Food Stylist + Private Events Chef BY LAUREN LEONE

For Rochester private chef and food stylist Sydney Brokaw, there was never a time that she remembers not cooking. She grew up in the kitchen baking cookies and experimenting with food, which quickly turned into creating meals for her family. This led to her becoming the designated party planner for family events. If there’s a family brunch, it’s being held at her place, and you know the spread is going to be good! Along with planning the family gatherings, Sydney has a full-time job and her own side business catering private dining events. When given the opportunity to cater a friend’s event during COVID, Sydney quickly realized that having her own business in private catering would be the experience she needed to get into food styling and help curate a portfolio. When asked what exactly being a food stylist means, Sydney says she’s still learning, but that to her, it means creating an experience through a photo. Looking through a magazine like Bon Appétit, for example, you may see a beautiful photo of a grilled Italian sausage with unique topping inspiration. Something like this photo, Sydney says, takes her to a backyard picnic on a hot Memorial Day weekend. “It’s all about taking the reader and putting them where that photo was taken.” It’s also a great way to generate ideas for new recipes! If you scroll through Sydney’s Instagram account, you’ll find colorful photos that will both inspire your next meal and leave your stomach growling with a wide variety of foods, ranging from Mexican to Italian and everywhere in between. 20 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester

LOCAL SIP + DINE

When asked what her favorite food to cook is, she can’t choose just one dish. Sydney does, however, say that her favorite cuisine to cook is Asian. Anything with bold flavors like ginger and scallions will be a winner for her! Sydney finds inspiration for her love of cooking from many different places, one of them being the city of Rochester itself. “I love how excited and supportive the community gets when there are new dining options in town.” Velvet Belly is one spot that she can’t wait to try out, making a birthday dinner reservation for it two months in advance. This new spot just had their grand opening, located in the Rochester Public Market, and is inspired by coastal cuisine. As for one of her long time go-to’s in the Rochester food scene, Sydney loves Vern’s on Park Ave, stating, “Their tomato pie is life changing!” She’s tried to recreate it at home, but it just isn’t quite the same. As the food and beverage industry in Rochester was greatly affected by COVID, Sydney says that it has made her appreciate going above and beyond to help these businesses out. “I’ll make that effort to tip a little extra, try a new spot, or drive to the restaurant to pick up the food because I understand the struggle.” Doing it all on her own, Sydney is the party planner, chef, server, and dishwasher all in one! She also says that COVID has given people a greater appreciation for the convenience that dining in their own home brings. She wants to give people the option to have

“I love how excited and supportive the community gets” that restaurant atmosphere and experience at home, by curating a personalized menu just for them. As for where she sees the future of dining in Rochester going, Sydney is excited that when she walks down Park Ave now, more and more restaurants are starting to see a lot of business, and she has high hopes for what’s to come in both the restaurant world and her world of gourmet private dining! Tip From the Chef: Don’t follow the recipe to a T! Decide what you like about the recipe and try making it several times. Also, don’t be afraid to fail because that teaches you what to improve on next time. Sydney’s Dream Food Destination: Italy! Sydney loves a good charcuterie board and wants to learn more about their meat curing process! She’s also curious about the education that chefs go through in order to become pizza makers and is eager to taste the level of standards that these pizzas must meet in order to be presented!

LOCAL DREAM HOME The term “house” conveys a structure, but “home” invokes feelings of warmth and precious memories. More than ever, home is where we work, play, teach, and melt away the stress of the world outside our door. It’s the backdrop for friends and family to share in our lives. That is the true meaning of a 26 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester

dream home.

LA BELLE VIE

“The Beautiful Life“ Situated on a former horse farm, La Belle Vie is not defined by its Country French style, but rather its classic furnishings that feel collected and personal. Nature is infused everywhere, both in texture and in the calm palette of warm neutrals, blues and greens. The open floor plan is conducive to frequent gatherings of friends and family. This is a dream home that reflects the welcoming spirit of the homeowners.

LIVABILITY

Although the overall aesthetic feels luxurious, we designed this home for relaxed living. There is no formal dining room - a farm table in the kitchen/breakfast space fits everyone. Washable performance fabrics on furnishings alleviate the fret over spilled wine and sticky hands.

Rochester | THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM 27

Wallpaper has made a dramatic return to fashionable interiors. We chose a large scale medallion grass cloth for the home office, creating a subtle layering effect that instantly warms the space. If you’re not sure you want to commit to papering an entire room, opt to cover just the backs of an open bookshelf as we did in the mudroom. The dark chocolate textured paper creates a dramatic backdrop for the homeowner’s brightly colored pottery.

CHOOSING A COLOR PA L E T T E A N D K N O W I N G W H E N TO D E V I AT E F R O M I T

A home with an open floor plan calls for a cohesive color story. However, rooms that are more defined such as powder rooms, children’s spaces and guest rooms offer the opportunity for a moment of surprise without affecting the overall palette. In the grandkids’ bunkroom, we chose bold splashes of royal blue and teal to create a fun and energizing space.

Rochester | THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM 29

“Home is a deeply personal space, so I ask a lot of questions and take note of what the homeowner’s vision of their dream home should look like, and more importantly, feel like. It is a gift to create a unique space for them that at once feels like home, and evokes those precious memories.”

THINKING OUT OF THE BOX.

We’ve built many custom furniture pieces to fit in a specific footprint. In the upper hall, we built the space to fit the furniture piece! The stately linen press lends a sense of history and story to this home. Since the hall lacks a natural light source, we added full-length mirrored panels on each side and placed sconces over the mirrors to double the light reflection. 30 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester

SUMMER VIBES

ALL EYES ON ROCHESTER ART & ARTISAN MARKETS:

THE HUNGERFORD, THEMATA & THE RIVETER FESTIVAL Art and supporting its creation benefits communities because it allows people to have a voice in a non-verbal media to express where and who they are you can’t underestimate the power of that! - BY RILEY SMITH -

THE HUNGERFORD 1115 E Main St, Rochester Some may not know it, but art is a major aspect of Rochester city culture. It can be seen throughout Downtown in and around beautiful, historic buildings. One such building is The Hungerford. Today, it’s filled with artists’ studios, ranging from newbies to seasoned artists who’ve been in the industry for decades. In fact, it’s been home to such well-known artists as Richard Erney, Allen Singer, and Olivia Kim. Sabra Wood is 71 years old, and she understands just how important art is to the Rochester community. She is a potter who runs her art studio in The Hungerford. She also volunteers as the social media coordinator for the building’s summer events, which are called First Fridays and Second Saturdays. On each first Friday of the month, Hungerford artists open up their studios to the public. Anyone can come in, look at art, ask questions, and make purchases. Second Saturdays are similar, except the parking lot is filled with booths set up by the artists in addition to the option of exploring inside! Visit us this summer! First Friday & Second Saturday of each month. First Fridays are held from 6-9pm. Second Saturdays are held from 10am-2pm.

THEMATA 145 Culver Road, Rochester Rochester’s art community also embraces Themata (Th-u-mo-ta), a Latin word that translates to “the market at the armory.” In Rochester, though, it means a whole lot more. Tanvi Asher, the owner and manager of the small boutique Peppermint, understands just how important it is to support local businesses and artists. Themata is a summer art event, and Tanvi helps put it together. It first began in Summer 2020 when the pandemic had changed the lives of small business owners and artists throughout the country. To help put their names back on the Rochester map as well as to help them recoup their financial losses due to the pandemic, Themata was born. Themata takes up half of the parking lot in The Armory. Booths filled with local artists and their beautiful work pack the area, and anyone is welcome to browse and purchase! Come to THEMATA Saturdays, 10am -4pm on July 24th, August 7th, & August 21st! Meet miranda

A Delicious

Summer Picnic trio Rochester native

Miranda “Mir” Leo is taking the concept of home cook by storm. We sat with the Instagram foodie to discuss the inspiration behind her bright, beautiful, delicious dishes perfect for a summer evening in!

“For me, cooking is a way I can bring those I love together,” Miranda said in her small galley kitchen. The apartment serves as a multi-purpose experimental kitchen, workspace, and studio all in one. “I have loved cooking and food for as long as I can remember, starting with fresh baked pastries at my Nonna and Papa’s house.” Keen on trying new recipes and spearheading the family’s grocery list after school, Miranda was all about sharing her love of new foods. While wrapping up a fourteen-year figure skating career, Miranda admits she became increasingly focused on food, and not in a healthy way. “I became acutely aware of everything I was eating, and it turned all-consuming. Having discreetly battled eating disorders for years, I fell more in love with cooking because it was a way to put my mind at ease while nourishing myself as well as possible,” Miranda said. “I was able to turn the ship around and make my health—physical and mental—a priority. I spent hours in the kitchen relearning how to eat, cook, and build a positive relationship with food.” For Miranda, the creation of @EatsWithMir was dual purposed: a means of holding herself accountable to stay healthy and to connect with others in similar situations. “With my page, I have been fortunate to connect with people near and far. I can try new recipes, share my creations, and tap into the creativity of others from around the world,” Miranda said, proudly showcasing her array of cooking utensils and collection of cocktail ingredients. In the years since battling her eating disorders, she has also developed several food allergies, which, rather than limit her cooking, have inspired her to think outside of the box. Each of her recipes includes substitutions that best benefit her health, and she also encourages her followers to personalize them to their liking and dietary needs.

Make a Refreshing Jalepeño Margarita! Recipe on the next page 50 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester

“One of my favorite things is buying foods that I know I can build a few recipes from, which ensures I waste as little as possible!” Miranda said, stirring together a mix of kale and roasted chicken from the night before. A local farmers market is her favorite go-to for locally grown, in-season produce. “A lot of ingredients—vegetables, meats, spices—are versatile, and the possibilities are endless. Cooking should focus on incorporating ingredients you love, and, more importantly, that make you feel good!”

Tuscan-Style Lemon and Tomato Chicken 1 lb. linguine 1 lb. skinless, boneless chicken breasts or tenders Salt and pepper 1 cup flour ½ tsp. cayenne pepper 1 tsp. basil, dry 1 tsp. oregano, dry 4 Tbsp. olive oil 2 Tbsp. canola oil 2 Tbsp. butter 4 garlic cloves, smashed 3 lemons 1 pint cherry tomatoes ½ cup dry white wine (I prefer a

buttery chardonnay or sauvignon blanc!)

3 sprigs of thyme, fresh ½ cup basil, fresh Optional: Parmesan cheese Heat a large stock pot with water and cook pasta according to instructions on box. If you are using chicken breasts, cut lengthwise to butterfly. Pound each piece of chicken so they are ½” thick. (Disregard if using tenders.) Place chicken on a paper towel lined plate and pat dry. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper. In a shallow bowl, combine flour, cayenne pepper, basil, oregano, and salt and pepper. Creating an assembly line, place seasoned chicken in the flour bowl, making sure the entire breast is covered in flour. Shake off excess flour and transfer to a clean plate. Continue until all chicken has been floured. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil and canola oil. When oil is hot, add chicken, making sure not to overcrowd pan. If needed, cook chicken in 2 batches. Cook for 4-5 minutes on each side before transferring to a plate. (If you’re using chicken tenders, cook for 2-3 minutes per side.) Add butter to the pot. While the butter melts, slice one lemon and add it to the pot. Let the lemon caramelize for a minute or two before transferring to a plate; add remaining olive oil to the skillet and add the garlic and tomatoes. Cook for 5 minutes or until tomatoes begin to burst and omit their juices. Reduce the heat to medium-low and add the wine and lemon juice and zest of remaining two lemons. Add chicken back into the skillet and let everything cook for 10-12 minutes, or until chicken has reached an internal temperature of 165ºF and the lemon wine sauce has begun to thicken. Serve chicken and burst tomatoes with cooked pasta. Top with caramelized lemons and fresh basil. Ladle the lemon wine sauce over the chicken and pasta. Rochester | THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM 51

SUMMER VIBES

Mir’s Olive Oil Cake

1 ½ cup flour (I use Bob’s Red Mill baking flour; use any flour of your choice!)

2 tsp. baking powder Pinch of salt 3/4 cup granulated sugar 3 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract ½ cup olive oil ½ cup heavy cream (you can use 2% or whole milk, but the fattier the milk, the better the cake will taste in my opinion!)

Optional: Whipped cream & your favorite jam! Preheat oven to 350ºF and prepare an 8” round baking pan with parchment paper on the bottom. In a standing mixer (or in bowl with regular mixer!), beat eggs and sugar on high until light and fluffy. Reduce speed of mixer and slowly pour in olive oil. Mix until combined and repeat with the heavy cream and vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder and salt. Whisk until mixture has become infiltrated with air (will help cake become a little lighter and fluffier). Slowly mix in flour mixture on LOW. Scrape sides and do NOT over-mix! Pour batter in prepared pan and bake for 30 minutes or until cooked through. If it’s not, add 3 minutes at a time to avoid over-baking! After baking, let cake come down to room temperature before transferring to a cake platter. Using a sifter or other shaker, top with powder sugar. Serve topped with jam and whipped cream!

jalepeño margarita 3 oz. Tequila of preference (I prefer Blanco!)

2 ½ oz. Patrón orange liqueur 3 oz. fresh lime juice 1 tsp. agave ½ jalapeño, sliced Optional: Trader Joe’s Chile Lime Salt Ice Mix tequila, liqueur, lime juice, agave, jalapeño, and ice in a cocktail shaker. Using a lime wedge, coat the rim of your glass with lime juice and sprinkle the Chile Lime Salt around the rim. Shake the glass to remove excess salt. Fill cup with ice and pour margarita. Top with lime wedges and jalapeño slices!
