ROCHESTER RESTAURANTS EXCITE THE SENSES

with a Variety of Culinary

To Rochester native, Travania Clark (Director of Sales & Marketing at the Strathallan and Hyatt Regency), restaurants have been in her blood since she was a server’s assistant at age 14. With formal training at Paul Smiths College and RIT and over twenty years’ experience in the hotel and restaurant industry, Clark says, “I wake each day excited to enrich my community and make special memories for our guests.” Her goals are “to run great establishments where people can get together with their friends, associates, and families to connect and enjoy amazing service and fine food & music.”

She raves about Rochester’s “combination of unique affordable neighborhoods, rich diverse culture, dynamic preforming arts, active professional sports, and festivals through the summer and, of course, an amazing live music and food scene.” Clark’s restaurants at the Strathallan on East Ave and the Hyatt Regency on East Main St are each “about as unique as possible,” offering something for every occasion, every taste, and every budget.

Local influencer, designer, and owner of The Bliss House Co., Muster always had a passion for interior design, a knack for combining old and new, and an appreciation for all things vintage and antique. Inspired by her mother, Muster found herself craving something that could bring her joy and began styling her space as a way to encourage others to feel happy and creative. She started her interior design business and Instagram account in late 2021 and has since grown it to over 100k followers! Amanda has helped hundreds of people learn to style their homes and even offers virtual design services to clients country-wide.

SETTING THE TABLE

The main focal point of any dinner party – especially those outdoors – is the tablescape. “Make it special by using a theme or idea of what you want to present to your guests,” advises Amanda Muster, designer and owner of the Bliss House Co, an online interior design company. Our dinner party had a simple, vintage organic setting with a curated mix of antique family heirlooms paired with modern rustic table linens and accessories. Before you pull your table setting and décor together, decide on a theme and coordinating color palette. Next, turn to Pinterest and Instagram to gather inspiration. Whether you choose white vintage, outdoor garden party, modern organic, or another theme, you can refine your style as you go and determine what you can DIY to make it come to life.

Consider all the senses when preparing your table, including what guests will see, hear, and even smell. Appropriate lighting such as outdoor string or café lights can make a world of difference. Don’t be afraid of candles or music; just make sure to use unscented or minimally-scented options that don’t overpower the food aromas and keep music low enough so guests may comfortably communicate with one another.

When it comes to the day of – enjoy the process! Prepare as much as you can ahead of time and make a list to check off as you go the day of. Slow down and enjoy the process, don’t just rush through it, or you won’t enjoy it!

Whatever your plan, keep it comfortable and casual, especially when hosting outdoors. “People feel most comfortable when they feel like it’s their home. Engage them with the dining experience and allow them to be themselves.”

PREPARING A FARM TO TABLE MENU

Though many choose to prepare their own food, leveraging a private chef’s help can be worth the time and money so you may better enjoy the gathering. Regardless of who’s cooking, lean on fresh, local ingredients to enhance the flavor and experience of the meal.

Averie Riel, private chef and owner of The Local Farm Table, says, “Food isn’t just about eating something because you are hungry. It’s really meant to bring everyone around the same table, take a step away from our busy lives and be able to catch up on life.”

Our chef for the evening, Riel prepared a colorful summer meal using inseason produce such as heirloom tomatoes, fresh peaches, roasted beets, and golden corn. She says she cooks with farm-fresh products from small businesses in the area. “We are fortunate to have so many farmers markets, farm stands, local CSAs, and butcher shops in our area,” she says.

When setting your menu, consider what is in season and which flavors pair well together, while also complimenting your overall theme, to ensure the food is fresh and flavorful. Riel suggests picking menu items that are colorful, not too heavy, and unique or upscale that guests wouldn’t normally eat. She explains, “Food becomes a conversation piece around the table. Having courses that include a lot of fruits and vegetables make it feel as though the dishes were harvested right from the backyard or selected fresh from the farmers market. It gives the meal a farm-to-table essence to elevate the evening.”

Honey Garlic Shrimp with Golden Corn Polenta

For Polenta:

½ cup quick cooking polenta

2 ½ cup water

1 T salted butter

¼ cup grated parmesan

1 ear of corn, off the husk

1 medium shallot, small diced

1 T olive oil

16 large shrimp, peeled and deveined

Honey Garlic Sauce:

¼ cup honey

1 T chipotle paste

1 clove garlic, minced

1 lime, juiced

1 bunch of basil, chopped

2 sprigs mint, chopped

1. Bring 2½ cups of water to a boil. Cook polenta according to its directions, roughly 6-8 minutes. Once polenta is cooked, season with salt and pepper and stir in butter and parmesan, cover and set aside.

2. Mix the honey, chipotle paste, garlic, and lime juice in a small bowl.

3. In a non-stick pan, heat olive oil over medium high heat. Cut kernels off the ear of corn, roast in oil with the shallots until corn becomes a charred golden color, about 8-10 minutes. Remove to a bowl and set aside.

4. In the same pan, add another tablespoon of olive oil and add the shrimp. Cook 2 minutes per side, or until the shrimp cooks through and becomes a golden color. Reduce the heat, pour in the honey mixture, and toss shrimp until fully coated and sauce thickens slightly.

5. To serve, stir half the corn into the polenta and divide between 4 dishes. Place shrimp on top, drizzle the remaining sauce on top, then top with fresh herbs.

PAIRING THE WINE

A dinner party isn’t complete without perfectly-paired refreshments, and for us, that was local wines from around our region. We had the guidance and expertise of sommelier, wine columnist, and owner of UNCORKED, Holly Howell.

Howell paired wine from a handful of local vineyards to celebrate the flavors of Riel’s menu. Her passion and enthusiasm for wine extends beyond knowing what pairs well with any given ingredient. She believes wine should be fun and offered pairing tips and hints to help guests feel comfortable and create an enjoyable experience for all.

When hosting an outdoor dinner party, remember that great wines that are food-friendly don’t need to be expensive. Howell says, “We are so lucky to have such great wine available in our backyard with so many great vineyards sprinkled throughout the Finger Lakes.”

Using local wine whenever possible, she offers tips for any dinner party, like starting with a sparkling wine such as the Dr. Frank’s Célèbre she paired with our Tomato Peach Burrata Salad. Howell says, “I love to start with a sparkling wine. It gets everyone comfortable and talking with one another, and pairs well with most appetizers.” She recommends progressing from lighter flavors to heavier, bolder reds. Consider pairings with the sauce or seasoning of each dish whenever possible.

RUNNING ON HORSEPOWER

TAIL-WAGGIN‘ SUMMER

Maya Schneider

has loved horses for as long as she can remember. From her first time riding a horse at summer camp as a young girl to performing and competing in national horse shows, Maya has happily identified as an equestrian for most of her life. Recently, she qualified for the world-renowned Devon Horse Show and Country Fair in the jumpers – a huge undertaking for any equestrian – which is a show that has been on Maya’s bucket list for years.

In addition to her love of horses, she is passionate about making the equestrian community a more diverse and accessible space for all. She hopes to encourage the younger generation to explore horseback riding and to spend time around the four-legged beauties that have taught her so much about life.

Between Maya’s success as a horse rider and the work she continuously does to promote inclusivity in the sport, she keeps very busy. On top of all of that, she is a psychiatric nurse practitioner and shares two sweet dogs with her husband. Suffice it to say, Maya is a true inspiration to every community she touches.

Maya recently transitioned from hunter riding to jumper riding. She had been a hunter rider for her entire career as an equestrian, but then she found Noble, a beautiful 10-year-old with a chestnut coat and white markings on his face and legs. Maya said she just had a feeling about him when they met.

She purchased Noble two years ago, and it quickly became evident that he had plans outside hunter riding. Once they gave jumper riding a try, it made sense, and the two of them have had a ball jumping ever since. “I never thought I would show in the jumpers,” Maya recently wrote on her Instagram page, “but I’m having more fun than I could have ever imagined.”

When they aren’t in the jumper ring, Maya says Noble is a very food-oriented individual. He loves carrots and apples, is not a fan of bananas, will eat watermelon (rindfree, per his requests), and is a fan of a good gingersnap.

For Maya, she is also really enjoying the creative freedoms that jumper riding offers regarding fashion. While

hunter riding is known for being very strict with fashion guidelines, the jumper divisions allow for greater creative license. Some of her favorite stores and brands for horse riding attire are Exceptional Equestrian, EQL, Oughton, and Veltri Sport.

a welcoming space

As a woman of color, Maya wants to use her platform and her voice to speak to the importance of promoting diversity in horse riding. The sport is overwhelmingly white, and it is essential to begin conversations around creating a more safe, welcoming, and diverse community for all horse riders.

Maya is a member of the United States Hunter Jumper Association’s (USHJA) DEI committee, a member of the American Horse Council’s DEI task force, and manager of the Black Equestrians’ Instagram account. By starting small with concrete changes in the community, Maya hopes to make horse riding a more representative sport for all. “It’s helpful to not have anyone question that they belong in the space,” says Maya. She believes it is essential for all horse riders to see themselves on social media accounts

and websites dedicated to the sport. As a manager for Black Equestrians’ Instagram account, Maya works to highlight Black horse riders around the country. From sharing wins of Black riders who have qualified for events to posting about the importance of creating a helmet that safely protects Black riders with natural hair, Black Equestrians encourages open dialogue centered around inclusion.

In addition to a more diverse online presence, Maya wants to start a conversation around access to the equine sport in the first place. She is transparent when speaking to the financial costs of riding lessons, buying necessary gear, and potentially leasing or owning a horse.

Since spending time with horses can be very therapeutic, it is especially important to assess who has access to horse riding and the benefits it offers. Maya would like to highlight one organization in particular – A Horse’s Friend, Inc. – which offers horse riding to at-risk youth from the City of Rochester. Such organizations are incredible examples of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the equestrian community.

community of kindness

It is clear that Maya Schneider thrives in the equestrian community. Whether she is showing with Noble or advocating for diversity within the equine sport, Maya runs on horsepower. She believes horses are incredible creatures that can teach us a lot about ourselves and about how we treat those in our community. With kindness, perhaps a gingersnap in hand, and a lot of love, Maya is changing the world of horse riding one step at a time.

Saturday in Roc starts with

COFFEE CARS Cars AND Coffee

A car is more than just a form of travel; it’s an investment where significant life experiences occur and lifetime memories are made.

Kevin and Jillian VanValkenburgh, inspired by West Coast car culture, created Rochester Cars and Coffee, a monthly social event to bring people and generations together.

For the past 13 years, Rochester Cars and Coffee invites the public to come together for a family-friendly event to see everyone’s vehicles, check out the Little Speed Shop’s race facility, and simply socialize with other enthusiasts. There’s coffee and a food truck each Saturday once a month from 8-10am. Any given month may bring out anything from a caravan of kids, strollers, and dogs on leashes to Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Porsches, Fiats, Nissans, Hondas, and Low Riders. All makes and models are welcome, and people are welcome to come even without a vehicle to showcase.

This event offers a place for people to enjoy each other’s cars and respect what everyone has built, whether it’s a hot rod or the first car they worked hard to buy. People bond with their cars as they restore and maintain vehicles, and it brings them joy to show off the hard work and designs they crafted. Cars & Coffee allows them the venue to do so.

This event/group isn’t just another car show. Car owners share stories about their lives through memories made with their cars. People tell stories of personal, happy memories, special occasions, and special people they remember through their vehicles. When grandparents take grandkids out for ice cream in a vintage car, the children will treasure the memory. When that vehicle is then passed down through generations, smells and emotions emit treasured sentimental value.

Kevin VanValkenburgh became a car enthusiast working on cars in his parents’ garage. Throughout his life, Kevin has owned almost every generation of BMW, and in the past few years he got into the Porsche market. His biggest passion is spending time with his wife, Jillian, and their children, Chase and Charlotte.

Rochester

Jillian, a social worker by training, says she wasn’t really a car girl until she met Kevin and started running their auto repair shop. Her appreciation grew for the beauty and intricacies of a fine automobile. Jillian’s “Mommy Mobile” is a modified BMW or Porsche. With Chase and Charlotte along for the ride, spending time with her family is her number one passion (especially when they get to go out on their boat named Mr. Potato Head!).

VanValkenburgh’s European auto repair shop, The Little Speed Shop, keeps Rochester Cars and Coffee group going. Since 2017, The Little Speed Shop teams with Watkins Glen International to provide a full range of services to keep drivers on track during events. They mount and balance tires, replace brakes, and provide helmets, gloves, and other apparel and equipment race car drivers need.

Rochester Cars and Coffee connects with Watkins Glen International to help promote interest in motor sports within the next generation. Events provide an opportunity to drive at a world-famous racetrack in upstate New York, such as at the Watkins Glens Historic Sportscar Racing event, NASA High Performance Driving Education (HPDE), and Trackmasters.

The VanValkenburghs give back to the community through proceeds from merchandise sales and donations. Helping businesses, the community, and charities is the heart and soul of Kevin and Jillian. They took part in the Dream Factory Scavenger Hunt and have raised money for Golisano Children’s Center.

Living the best Lake Life

creating a Pet-Friendly Home with Amie Freling of Meme Hill Studio

With the sun shining and water beckoning, there’s no better place to be than by the lakeside. Whether it’s a weekend trip or an extended stay, it’s time to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life to enjoy some quality time with loved ones, including our furry companions.

To gather some expert insight on homes perfect for people and pets, we sat with Amie Freling, the designer and artist behind Meme Hill Studios! Fresh off a recent lakehouse renovation, she shared valuable tips for making the most of pet-friendly and peoplepleasing homes.

| THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM 47

Bring Color to Your Lakeside Retreat

When it comes to creating a picturesque lake atmosphere, color is key! Amie suggests a palette combination of off whites, light grays and blues, along with touches of beige or cream. By the water, blues act as neutrals, which Amie says “set the nautical mood, and lighter colors help put us in summer mode!” For a sharp contrast, consider swapping out kitchen hardware with black accents. Amie also emphasizes windows while steering away from elaborate window treatments that may block stunning views of the water. As her motto says, keep it “light and bright!”

Furniture Solutions for Fido

Amie suggests slipcovers for those whose pets like to take up residence on the couch. While they can be expensive upfront, she assures they pay for themselves in the long run, since they not only protect the cushions, but a fresh cover can transform an old couch into a seemingly new one.

“The color itself depends on the dog hair, but you’ll want something that’s not too dark so hair doesn’t stand out too much,” Amie says. She also recommends slipcovers or performance fabrics that can easily be washed in case of spills or accidents, perfect for people and pets alike. For added convenience, most covers can be individually removed. “I also suggest fabrics that are treated to repel stains and that are sun or fade resistant.”

For other furniture materials, Amie advises avoiding linen curtains, cotton, or any treated fabrics if petfriendliness is your priority. For Amie, “It’s all about function, then form.”

And for those whose furry friends enjoy perching on the back of the couch, having cushions that don’t connect to the frame itself reduces the risk of tears or damage. Other options include having a designated pillow or blanket that can be taken off for guests. “They help protect the couch and can easily be removed,” Amie says. At her home they have two sets: dog blankets and people blankets. “Our dog blankets all have prints to separate them so it’s easy to tell what’s what.”

Dog Kisses on Windows

We all have that one window (or many!) our dogs love looking out. For treating those little smudges, Amie suggests either a mix of 9 parts water/1 part vinegar or simple Windex, and “keeping up with it is key!”

FAVORITE PLACE TO VISIT: The lake!

Pet-Friendly Floors

When it comes to flooring, selecting the right material is crucial, especially in a lakehouse and more so one with pets. Amie highly recommends luxury vinyl tile (LVT) or luxury vinyl plank (LVP). Manmade materials that offer durability and affordability make them ideal for enduring spills and varying weather conditions without swelling or expanding.

“There are two designer tips for finding vinyl that I always look for,” Amie says. “One: grooves, or the beveling in the edges, and two: embossing, where I can see the full grain in the planks.”

Again, she advises against using dark colors, as they tend to highlight dust and pet hair. Instead, medium-light tones

are some of her favorites, and she emphasizes that floors contribute to the overall color scheme of a room just as much as wall paint does. With current trends moving more toward warmer colors and fewer grays, Amie also suggests mixing in wood tones, which are picturesque in upstate NY.

“Find something neutral that has longevity, that you know you will love for a long time,” Amie says. Finding the right flooring can be a process, and Amie says renovations can be not only pricey but time-consuming. It’s best to go with something that works for you, not something that caught your eye for a split second. “It’s always easier to paint a single wall than to redo an entire floor!”

Rochester | THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM 49
FOR THE HOME

Dog-Friendly Elements

Finding a balance between your dog’s treats, toys, and your everyday décor is easier than you may think. Amie suggests incorporating covers for dog beds that match the room’s theme, along with cute baskets for toys or glass jars with wooden lids for treats. There are also a wide variety of mats available for dog bowls that can not only blend well with your overall scheme, but can help catch spills!

Another quick way to add some canine charm to your home is to swap out welcome mats. With numerous fun options, the mat at this recently renovated lakehouse reads, “Hope You Like Bulldogs!” Enmesh your dog and everyday décor with storage bins for tennis balls or put cute, interactive

dog toys on display. Consider investing in dog fountains, pools, or splash pads to help keep your furry friend cool and entertained during the summer. Depending on activities, dog life jackets and collar lights can also be essentials for safety.

Recent Reno

This recent project was done to provide the residents with single floor living perfect for aging in place. The entertaining spaces strategically face the lake, highlighting the picturesque setting with the new wall of windows. With most time at the lake centered around entertaining, Amie knew she needed ample space for friends and family, which meant space to gather, grill, and socialize.
