• From Honeybee & Bloom Gardens in Rochester, NY •

article by riley smith Rochester | THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM 17

In the midst of a pandemic, Maddie and her husband, Matt Buffan, started Honeybee & Bloom Gardens in Rochester. Honeybee & Bloom Gardens is a seasonal business which sells raw unfiltered wildflower honey as well as freshly cut flowers grown organically. The couple already has plenty of regulars purchasing their raw honey. The majority of the feedback they receive states that their honey is the best and most unique each customer has ever had. It’s truly a testament to the local raw unfiltered honey experience since the products are neither heated nor processed in any way.

“It sure beats anything off the shelf at the grocery store!” - Maddie

How It Works

Gardening Inspiration

Honeybee & Bloom Gardens offers a CSA program for honey and seasonal flowers featuring dahlias. They take small orders for events, and customers can also purchase honey and bouquets a la carte. This business is Maddie and Matt’s “side hustle,” as managing honeybees and distributing flowers and bouquets mainly takes place in summer and fall, and harvesting honey takes place throughout the warmer months when the honeybees are active. Flowers are available from summer until the first hard frost with the couple ensuring all of their growing practices are organic, low-chemical, and low-toxin.

When Maddie discovered you could grow your own cut flowers, especially Dahlias, in the Rochester Region, she dove headfirst into her 2020 pandemic project. She only had 96 square feet of space to grow in, but she made it work. She enrolled in a virtual Dahlia gardening class through the Rochester Brainery, which was taught by organic flower farmer Jenny Rae of Flowerwell Farms.

Beekeeping Inspiration Matt Buffan has always been interested in beekeeping. He wanted to learn more about sustaining the honeybee population. So, in 2017, Maddie gifted her husband with beekeeping classes taught by Hungry Bear Farms, run by Ben and Kimberly Carpenter in Canandaigua. From there, the couple invested in two nuclear hives. They started beekeeping shortly after they got married in May 2017 and have been doing so ever since! Maddie and Matt love science and learning together, so they’ve found beekeeping to be their perfect hobby as a married couple. Now that they’ve decided to invest in it, they’ve become even more passionate about the beekeeping industry and supporting their own gardens for the honeybee population. Maddie shares that they are keen on sustainability and “keeping the earth as happy as possible.”

18 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester

With endless varieties, shapes, and colors to add, Maddie ended up expanding to having nearly 90+ plants and growing other types of local flowers in 2021. She particularly loves Dahlias because they are beautiful, showy, and easy to grow. She wanted to add textures and colors to her bouquets as well, so she added other cut flowers to her gardens to compliment her Dahlias. With her young family, she didn’t want high maintenance plants; she liked how Dahlias required minimal human interaction. Other easy-to-grow flowers for our growing zone here in the Rochester area include Bachelor’s Button, Cosmos, Snapdragon, Zinnia, Echinacea, Bee Balm, Sunflower, Narcissus, and Peony. When the flowers became a hit, the Buffan family decided to offer a CSA to see if people wanted to invest in local and organically grown flowers as well as raw unfiltered honey. No other grower in the area has combined the two, so the couple figured they had a decent shot at making their business idea come to life. They started out small and sold out all of the shares they had available in their first year. Everything is made and grown in the Buffan family backyard, 0.41 acres in size, using only 558 square feet as their gardening space.

Maddie’s Gardening Tips

Garden with a loved one. Gardens are especially great for families with children! Matt and Maddie’s daughter, Luna (nearly three), started participating in seed starting and planting as soon as she was able to walk. This past fall, Luna was able to help Maddie plant over 200 Narcissus bulbs for spring blooming this year. Start small with easy-to-grow flowers. Plant a moderate amount of easy-to-grow flowers which are hardy and don’t need much pampering. This will set you up for success. Know your sunshine. Understand how much sun your flowers will need. This will help you determine where your garden should go on your property. Plan and prepare. Growing flowers takes time, so you want to set yourself up for the best success possible. Know your last spring frost and first fall frost dates. This will help you determine when to start seeds. Seeds packets will have detailed instructions as to when and how to start them. Map out a plan on a calendar so you understand what you need in terms of materials and when to start seeds. Opt for native, pollinator-friendly flowers. When it comes to pollinator friendly flowers, choosing varieties native to your growing area is key! It’s very important to use organic gardening practices and avoid the use of pesticides, especially in a space dedicated to pollinators! Pollinator friendly flowers include the Calendula, Marigold, Salvia, Lavender, Cosmos, Verbena, Milkweed, Borage (honeybees especially love this one), Yarrow, Oregano, Sunflower, Echinacea, Zinnia, Goldenrod, Bee Balm, Bachelor’s Button, and the Strawflower.

Matt’s Beekeeping Tips

Take a class! There is an awesome class taught through the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Canandaigua with the Ontario Finger Lakes Beekeepers Association. Start small. Two hives is best if you have the space in your yard. You can compare against the two and note differences, which is great for learning and troubleshooting. Plus, if you lose a hive, you can split the surviving hive. The split hive will then create a new queen and can populate the empty hive. Expect mistakes. Mistakes are going to happen, and that’s okay; it’s part of the learning process! Matt and Maddie lost one of their two hives during their first winter (2017-2018). You can always start again with a new nucleus hive or split an established hive. Be sure to take notes, learn from what didn’t work and what did work, and keep on trying. Wind breakage and sun are key. Like sunshine, wind protection during winter is especially vital for the honeybees! Provide flowers that support beekeeping. Plant a variety of flowers which will grow from early spring to the first hard frost in the fall to provide a source of food nearby throughout the entire growing season. Don’t forget pollinator friendly plants and veggies, too! Snowdrop and Dandelion are some of the best flowers for honeybees during the early spring.

Glamping Slumber Party

Many parents are searching for something special to celebrate their child’s birthday or to bring back social gatherings with friends. An elevated slumber party does just that by incorporating fun activities with Pinterest-inspired décor. Transform a space in your home to create a magical and memorable experience with teepees, matching bedding, accessories, lighting, and customized activities all centered around a theme. “The fun part is the ‘wow’ factor for the kids…and even the parents,” says Barbara DeSantis. Her company, Luxe & Lace Picnic specializes in creating memorable slumber parties for its clients. The best part is that elevated slumber parties aren’t only for children. They are great for all ages and types of events, including birthday celebrations, bachelorette parties, even a special ladies’ night. “We pride ourselves on thinking of everything for you,” Barbara says. “We take care of everything. All you have to do is show up and make these memories!” This indoor “glamping” can also be held in one’s backyard. No longer restricted to nothing but woods, a fire, and a tent, glamp in style by bringing family and friends together to experience a more luxurious way to enjoy the great outdoors. Named for being a more glamorous way to go camping, “glamping” has become a popular way to experience nature. Take camping to the next level by adding features such as a mattress, bedding, décor, lights, balloons, music, a movie projector, and more. This style of hosting can be a fun, casual way to celebrate or just spend time with loved ones close to the amenities you enjoy at home.

Luxury Picnics

Who said picnics have to be limited to a blanket and basket? Take your brunch, bridal shower, birthday party, or even proposal to the next level by hosting a luxury picnic. These can be held in the comfort of your own backyard or in any outdoor space. Start with a location, theme, and color palette and build from there with a focus on pulling each and every detail together. “We take picnics to a more elegant level, lots of pillows, placemats, and settings to make it really special for our guests in that moment,” says Barbara, who is also a luxury picnic expert. Some of her favorite events have been held in unique settings such as at a winery, local parks, and other beautiful spaces, and soon, at local spas, as well. Barbara and Homemade Events co-owner (and Barbara’s sister), Alyssa Lopez, note that many guests find ideas on social media like Pinterest or Instagram. The sisters then work on the details to bring your vision to life. They advise scheduling at least four weeks in advance to allow enough time for finding unique décor and accent pieces. Barbara adds that allowing time for thrifting helps ensure one-of-a-kind results. Guests may wish to add to the experience by requesting fun activities like painting or family and adult games. They may also bring their own food or select from options such as charcuterie platters, dessert boards, and beverages. These beautiful, ‘Insta-worthy’ table settings not only enhance the occasion but make for easy sharing and brag-worthy photos that will inspire those who see it to incorporate a little flair into their next meal or gathering.

Vintage Rentals

With the pandemic putting many large weddings and events on hold, couples are turning to smaller, more intimate gatherings to tie the knot. But that doesn’t have to mean boring or bland. By keeping an event small, you can actually pay more attention to every detail and experience your guests will have, making your celebration unique. Rebecca Duda of Quaint Rentals, a vintage furniture rental company, often advises her clients to do just that. Frustrated by cookie-cutter entertaining and inspired by the fresh take she saw in events out West, she began her collection to give couples in Western New York elegant, alternate options for their special day. “Small gatherings allow people to be really creative and plan an intimate experience,” says Duda. “Many couples are holding weddings in their backyard or other open spaces that allow guests to feel more comfortable, which also allows for a blank slate when it comes to style and design.” Create the feeling you want by incorporating a mixture of furniture and other accessories within a certain theme or style. She recommends creating small nooks or vignettes throughout your space to create a beautiful backdrop and give a special or unexpected spot where guests can enjoy the party and relax. Even small touches—like swapping out typical folding chairs for vintage seating or incorporating a one-of-a-kind piece into your big day—adds a touch of charm that enhances any wedding or event.

OH HAPPY DAY

Color evokes joy. IT’S IRIDESCENCE; RAINBOWS AND

RESILIENCE. ALL OF THOSE COLORS BOOST OUR MOODS AS WE LEAVE WINTER BEHIND, AND THAT SENSE OF SPRING LEAVES US FEELING INVIGORATED.

- Stacy K Ercan

Spring is blossoming onto the scene at Stacy K Floral. The Rochester-based floral shop has been treating the area to designer floral arrangements and a state-of-the-art green development since 2006. With a carefully curated selection of retail goods and floral products, Stacy K remains a premier option when searching for a vendor for celebratory events ranging from weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, showers, and beyond. We sat down with Stacy K owner, Stacy K Ercan, to get some insight into the vibrant world of flowers.

What’s your pick for the biggest trend? “We’re seeing a resurgence of colors,” says Stacy, who combined with her team boasts a jaw-dropping 173 years’ cumulative experience. While Stacy deals primarily in fresh flowers, she also notes she’s seen some use of dried botanicals in other trends. “In the past few years, it’s been a lot of neutral tones—a lot of whites and greens—whereas now we’re shifting more toward color.” With the pandemic, there was a serious inclination toward neutrals and tones that were calmer and more collected, a grounding element we’ve all needed over the past few years. As we lean into Spring 2022; however, Stacy says her team has seen significantly more jewel tones along with yellows and pastels. Red is also a particularly popular color at weddings. At Stacy K, there’s been a play on color theory and color forecasting; there’s a popular notion that the beginning of the 2020s is going to bring about their own rendition of Roaring 20s vibes with big, over the top of events. Stacy equates it to joy and bubbles.

How can I choose a fresh look this spring? Spring is the perfect time to celebrate. With wedding season on the horizon, the designers at Stacy K are excitedly preparing different ideas and designs to implement. So far, these have included plays on color variations of blues, tans, reds and whites, nudes and neutrals with pops of color, and those lovely jewel tones. One of the most important elements of designing, Stacy says, are clients redesigning a space to make it their own. When renting a space to host a wedding or reception (or even a corporate get-together), it’s those key little elements (like centerpieces, arrangements, and linens) that elevate a space and add personality to it. Personality which isn’t always going to be found online. “The problem with some websites is that a lot of people are seeing the same images based on algorithms and what is being clicked on the most,” Stacy says. These so-called “trends” may look nice at face value, but they don’t always work for everyone since they’re not necessarily personalized and instead are based more on what other people are looking at it. OH HAPPY DAY

“WE OFTEN TELL OUR CLIENTS TO LOOK AT THEIR CLOSETS FOR A STARTING POINT. OUR WORK IS INFLUENCED BY PEOPLE: THEIR JOBS, THEIR HOBBIES… EVERYTHING SPARKS FROM YOU. EXPLORING CLIENT PERSONALITIES IS KEY,” STACY SAYS. For that personal touch, going to a local vendor who specializes in what you’re looking for is your best bet for custom, individualized results. When looking for vendors for various events, including weddings, Stacy recommends finding vendors you’re comfortable with and can trust with your designs. Have a vision and idea in mind, but trust your vendors with their process—let them do what they do (they are experts, after all) and know they’re inclined to use more creativity if you let them go. Understand the value of what your vendors bring to the table, be prepared to allow shifts, and be as flexible as possible. For birthdays, the process might look a little different. “A lot of our customers are inspired by options we have on our website. They often pick something specific, and we encourage them to talk through things their recipient likes with the florist before we place an order.”

What are your go-to questions when incorporating trends? “What do you like in your life?” & “What is your personality?” With the resurgence of color on the rise as this year’s trend, the team works to incorporate different elements that both wow and inspire. If you’re someone who likes things a specific way with everything in its place, opt to go for a look that’s cleaner and more appealing. If your style errs more on the eccentric side, try a design that features two to three different types of centerpieces! Stacy is all about utilizing and reinventing looks, a perfect practice for spring renewal. For your event, start with the linens: different lengths set different moods, so ensure they correspond! Floor length linens are more floral, whereas three-quarter length fall on the more informal side. Linens tend to be predominantly neutral, which blend effortlessly with soft tones or bold colors, changing “the dynamics in a space.” “I’m naturally drawn to play with colors and patterns,” Stacy says, recently toying with different pairings of floral elements and heights. “A tall piece draws your eye and creates a central focus. When you’re seated, you have a similar effect but with a different element. It’s a pop of color at both eye levels.” Stacy K Floral takes worry away from their clients, working with what people are drawn to and then introducing variation. Forecasted to play host to the most weddings since 1984, 2022 is sure to be an adventure. With Stacy K Floral by your side, it’s sure to be a beautiful, colorful experience as visions blossom to life. “It’s what we love about what we do!”

Restoring Confidence with Home Start Hope Supporting Women in their Journey to Independence

Restoring Confidence with Home Start Hope After learning about the Bethany House, an community in which women can thrive and has provided women with a fulfilling shopping experience where they can select essential emergency shelter that provides transitional get back on their feet. household items free of charge. housing and support in Rochester, Kristin Mathis pitched an inspirational idea that would Families end up homeless for several reasons launch a decade-long mission to empower and despite minimal declines in the poverty rate This experience takes place in a beautifully women. Upon meeting with a Bethany House over the last few years, Rochester remains 3rd renovated 1930s home just outside of volunteer, she discovered that the women on the list of the 10 poorest U.S. metropolitan Irondequoit near Empire Boulevard and who leave there often don’t have the Culver Road. After storing the items herself for 7 years, Mathis wanted necessary items they need to move into their own homes. Her discovery led her “Women leave us so excited, empowered, and with a place where women could go to host a housewarming party to provide a renewed sense of hope. We didn’t know what they were like or they could store! She immediately knew what patterns and colors they would she was onto something and in August 2010 she officially started Home Start Hope, areas which creates a significant issue for prefer, so we wanted to give them a chance to an organization that supports women and many in the community. and pans, dishes, baking supplies, laundry baskets, shower curtains and much more. HSH thoughtfully purchases items from stores locally to stock the shelves and provides a private, exclusive shopping experience where women can get what they need. The impact of Home Start Hope has grown significantly over the past decade, helping more than 500 women and families throughout the community. In addition to the Bethany House, women come to HSH from a variety of places in the community such as the Willow Domestic Violence Center, Catholic Charities Family & Community Services, and the Open Door Mission. Like many non-profits, volunteers and fundraisers are the lifeblood of Home Street Hope. Volunteers can sign up to help women with their appointments, to shop and stock the shelves, or to help organize and host events throughout the year. This year, the organization is hosting its inaugural luncheon, Tablescapes 2022: Bring Love to the Table on May 1st at Locust Hill Country Club. This event is a unique opportunity that invites interior designers, event planners, florists, and gift boutique owners to design creative table settings for an exclusive experience. Tablescapes 2022 will also include a variety of other fun activities. Home Start Hope helps women make an important transition at a critical moment in their lives. They are there to support them with what they need to get back on their feet, renew their self-confidence and give them hope about the future. This is often a pivotal time in these women’s lives that helps empower them to rebuild, regardless of their circumstances. In the future, Mathis hopes to make an even bigger impact on fighting poverty in Rochester to really move the needle for families in need. Safe and reliable housing for women continues to be an issue in the community, and giving families the financial independence and skills to succeed continues to be a focus for Mathis and the entire Home Start Hope organization. “It’s hard to capture in just a few sentences what these women have had to deal with,” said Mathis. “We can’t even begin to imagine what their lives have been like. If we can provide even just a moment of happiness amidst all the trauma and stress they live with, we will give them everything we can.”
