Financial Well-Being that Lasts a Lifetime Most people rate finances as a top priority, but few seek expert advice from a financial advisor. Many of them think if they do not earn a six-figure income or have significant savings, they don’t need an advisor. Others believe being part-me, in debt, or late in saving for rerement rules them out. The truth is everyone has a financial future; Equitable Advisors can help that future be the best it can be.
Rochester locals, Michael Tornatore and Stefan Muoio answer your Equitable questions! Why should I meet with a financial advisor? Michael: Many people are (hopefully) saving for things like rerement, but there is lile strategy to it. They aren’t sure where to invest or which investment vehicles to choose. They have financial goals for the future, but they aren’t sure how to reach them. We help them figure out, and then implement a specific investment strategy to help them reach those goals. Stefan: We help people plan. There are things they can do which can have a very posive impact on what their financial future looks like no maer if they are 15 or 55. We find people are oen worried to meet because they are afraid they have not done enough or that they are too far behind financially. Time is one of the biggest factors in investment, so the best thing they can do is sit down with us as soon as possible so we can help them figure things out.
Michael Tornatore | Financial Consultant Michael was born and raised in the Rochester area. He earned his BA in Finance and worked for Paychex in finance and risk management for 9 years. “My uncle has worked for Equitable Advisors for 20 years. I made the jump to Equitable Advisors 3 years ago, and I wish I had done it sooner. I get to meet and help a lot of good people!” Michael currently lives in Rochester with his wife of over 13 years and their two children (ages 10 & 8).

What advice and benefits can I expect? Stefan: As advisors, we help people plan holiscally. We want to know about them, who they are, where they come from, what they are doing today, what is important to them, and what their goals are, to start. Do they want to have 2, 3, 4 kids, take a trip to Bermuda every year, work aer they rere? What are the objecves they have for their money? Every single person is different, and that is what keeps our job excing. With strategies and careful planning, we help people plan for their children’s educaon, for passing their wealth to future generaons, for ensuring their rerement funds last a lifeme, and more. Michael: We don’t simply work with them once. Financial goals and circumstances evolve, so we are with our clients from start to finish. We develop a relaonship with them, helping them figure out how to work through life’s changes. We calculate clients’ spend rates and compare them to their future income and assets, tying everything together to determine how to protect it and make it stretch as far as possible.

Stefan Muoio | Financial Professional Stefan was also born and raised in Rochester. He worked as a Wegmans Warehouse employee for nearly 8 years throwing cases. His Equitable Advisors career is a testament to the company’s priority on high-quality relaonships. “I knew I didn’t want to throw cases forever. I had known my dad’s Equitable advisor since I was 2 years old. When he suggested Equitable Advisors would be a good fit, I came in for an interview. Almost 8 years later, we have built a very successful team.” Recently married, Stefan and his wife live in Rochester with their miniature Goldendoodle puppy, Sandy.
m. (585) 698.5041 | p. (585) 475.8461 stefan.muoio@equitable.com
Will there be opons for my situaon? Stefan: Michael and I are local, blue-collar men with families helping out other blue-collar families as well as people from a wide variety of backgrounds. We know many of our clients are trying to send their kids to college and take care of their loved ones just like we are. We’re here to help them figure out how to do that. That’s what is important to us. We help a lot of people who are teachers, truck drivers, warehouse workers, welders— people you may not intuively think of when you think of people in need of financial services, but they do. We want to see all our clients grow and reach their goals. We are here to help everyone with several opons and investment blends. These are uniquely tailored to each individual to beer fit each unique situaon. No maer what our clients choose, at the end of the day, we shake hands and are sll friends. Michael: Our goal is to educate our clients about what opons we feel would benefit them the most. We explain the opons we see as well as the pros and cons of each so that our clients know what they are choosing and why. Our goal is to present the effecve opons for our clients and their financial futures, yet the choice is always theirs.
Do you charge a fee to meet? Michael: It is rare for financial advisors to charge a fee up front. There is no upfront fee or obligaon to meet with us to see how we can help. Stefan: There is no fee to meet with us, and no obligaon. Whether you make $1 or $1 million, we are here to help you and will treat you like family. We are very transparent about our compensaon which comes from the business we place. The majority of the people we work with are blue-collar individuals who want us to look over their situaon, and several of our plans are specifically tailored to them. You don’t have to be a CEO or high-income earner to plan for your financial future. All it costs is one hour of your me.
5 Steps for Planning your Retirement Finances 1 Determine your rerement date or projected rerement date. When do you want to finish working?
2 Figure out what you would like to do aer you rere. Would you like to stay at home or travel the world? Both are great, but the cost discrepancy between those is significant.

The days are getting shorter, and there’s a nip in the air that can only mean one thing. Fall is back! As the leaves change and we prepare to go back to school, your Home team took a moment to reflect on the importance of families, our communities, and the strong women who help make them what they are. We’ve always stood behind local businesses, and women are definitely making waves—for all of the right reasons. Each of the women featured has helped us find that drive and inspiration we’re looking for. (Keep an eye out for those moodboosting quotes!) Other family-focused ladies who are rocking our socks off include a local Sciency Roc Mom who’s spicing up fall with science and pumpkin volcanos and Lynn Wilmarth who is helping spread birthday joy to Rochester area kids with Happy Birthday Cha Cha Cha. Jennifer Buczek celebrates gardening and offers up tips to get kids involved in the process while Dr. Shannon Karcher shares helpful advice for the transition back to school after a tough year. While we’ll miss summer, at Home we always have something new and exciting for you just around the corner. So, grab a hot coffee—or cocoa or anything pumpkin spice—get cozy with the kiddos, and get ready to fall in love with Home all over again!

For Lynn Wilmarth, the road to success wasn’t always easy, but determination and hard work led her to a long-lasting career and gave her a work ethic that has carried on, helping her give back to the community that gave so much to her. Lynn, a single mother of two sons, struggled financially. She was determined to work at Xerox as a sales rep, hearing that one could make a lot of money if successful in that field. After being rejected twice and calling the manager every week for nearly nine months, she finally landed a job at the company in 1981. Eventually, Lynn worked her way up to her dream job which was Vice President of Sales at Xerox. As a woman in business, Lynn says she quickly learned that no one cares what your circumstances may be. She wasn’t treated any differently just because she was a single working mom juggling way too many balls. To compete for promotions, she says, it was all about “performance, attitude, and confidence.” When asked what advice she would give to someone who’s looking to start their own business or just work their way up the corporate ladder, Lynn says that most importantly you need to have grit and determination, two characteristics that led Lynn to being the successful businesswoman she became. After retiring from her job of 31 years, Lynn knew that she would at last have the time to really give back like she’d always wanted to. “I never had time to really ‘give back’ while I was working, but I never forgot the people that helped me when I was in need, whether it was the neighbors who watched my boys so I could go back to school and to work or the government programs like food stamps that helped me make ends meet,” she said. “I wanted to now be on the giving side rather than the receiving side.” Lynn states that she’ll never forget what it was like to find herself a single mom with two little boys and no college education or job skills. “Work, college loans, government assistance, and friends all helped me to reach a corporate executive role, and now it’s my turn.” Lynn started off volunteering at Wilson Commencement Park, coaching young mothers in life skills and how to interview for jobs. All of these were skills that she had acquired from her years working at Xerox. She did various volunteer work and served on the boards of local and national charities until one day, her neighbor, Carrie Green, brought an idea to her attention. Carrie told her that there were children in need, right in their own community. She spoke of how many children don’t have the opportunity to celebrate their birthdays and of how she wanted to do something to help. Lynn knew immediately that she wanted to join
her. Lynn says that resulting nonprofit, Happy Birthday Cha Cha Cha, was the brainchild of Carrie Green. “Carrie is the epitome of a doer, not a dreamer,” she said. “What I mean by that is many people talk about things that need to be done to help our communities, but it is the rare person who acts and operationalizes the idea.” Lynn knew that she wanted to help bring Carrie’s vision to reality to bring joy to kids in need on their birthdays, saying that the idea was “local, personal, and with immediate results.”
‘‘
We weren’t solving the problems of the world, but we were making a small difference in these kids’ lives, one child at a time, and there’s nothing more gratifying! - LYNN WILMARTH
They decided to start with one school in the Rochester City School District, helping 129 children in their first year. Today, HBCCC is in eight different schools in the Rochester City School District, and it is able to fund 1,300 children. For Lynn, Happy Birthday Cha Cha Cha has had an even greater impact than she could have imagined. She says that the benefits extend both ways: to the children that they’re providing for, but also to the communities that volunteer. Everyone seems to gain something through this experience of helping others. Lynn says that they would eventually love to see franchises of their business model and have chapters in other cities, which no doubt will happen with these determined women behind it.
Happy Birthday Cha Cha Cha provides kids in need with a bag stuffed full of necessities like soaps, toothbrushes, healthy foods, socks, and underwear. The kids also receive two gift-wrapped toys and Happy Birthday Oreos. The value of each bag is $50.00, and these items are 100% funded through donations! ... Protecting what matters most. Elizabeth’s legal career began at the Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office, where she interned while earning her Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies from Ithaca College. In 2015, Elizabeth moved to New York City to attend Brooklyn Law School. Though in school, she continued to work in the legal field, through both internships and various paid positions. As a paralegal for a firm in Brooklyn, she discovered her passion for transactional real estate law as she prepared for multiple closings. There, she also learned the Probate process, as well as Will drafting. In 2018, Elizabeth earned her Juris Doctorate from Brooklyn Law School, obtaining additional certifications in Real Estate and Criminal Law. After law school, Elizabeth worked as a Junior Associate, focusing in landlord/tenant matters in Manhattan. In 2018, Elizabeth relocated back to Upstate New York to be closer to her family, continuing her career working for a Rochester firm focusing in debt collection. In July of 2021, despite the present economic turbulence due to COVID, Elizabeth established her own practice, focusing in Transactional Real Estate, Wills and Probate.

According to Elizabeth, far too often people ignore their legal needs or simply put off hiring an attorney to save money. There are many nuances to buying and selling a home, and it is advantageous to have a lawyer on your side when issues do arise. Additionally, when it comes to planning for the future, planning for an unforeseen misfortune or our later years is often overlooked by those in their 20-30s with young families. However, what isn’t prepared for today through clear planning, can turn into a burden for our loved ones left behind. Rochester | THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM 25

Customers will find a wonderful assortment of goodies that will put smiles on their faces. ”Because of this pandemic I really feel like we need to reconnect with good times and things of the past. I am excited about Whimsies!”
Lisa shares a sentiment that is close to many American hearts. “I love to support local vendors. If someone has a product that I think is a good fit, I will always give it a try.” Post-pandemic, Lala’s continues to offer reasonable prices for their clientele. Her prices have continued to stay the same as they were Pre-Covid. In fact, seniors 65 and older enjoy 10% off Tuesdays, and you can receive 10% off during your birthday month! Locally owned, uniquely designed, and always affordable, Lala’s offers an engaging customer experience like no other. With Small Business Saturday coming up on November 27th, consider shopping at Lala’s and giving back to your community. At least three times as much money stays in your community when you shop at locally owned businesses rather than big box stores. While online shopping is convenient, it can’t complete with the human component and the high-quality products sold by knowledgeable and friendly retailers like Lala’s.

As the temperature dips and the leaves change colors, there’s no better time to cozy up our living spaces with our favorite fall trends! The Huber Homestead shares a few of her favorite spots in her home. Find more fall décor ideas on IG @ the.huber.homestead CHUNKY KNIT BLANKETS
Sweaters and scarves aren’t the only knits we’re pulling out this year! A few knit blankets add touches of color and warmth to a home setting, and with the right color scheme are functional year-round! And who doesn’t like a little layering? 30 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester
BRINGING THE HARVEST INDOORS
Fall leaves add splashes of color to just about any setting and can make for a fun centerpiece! Bring the outdoors indoors with clean branches and dried flowers. A few small pumpkins or gourds also help highlight the season with some texture and a festive look!
COLOR, COLOR, COLOR!
Here at Home, we love adding bursts of color to our living spaces, and some of our fall favorites feature earthy tones and greenery. Warm shades of brown, red, and orange add to the cozy fall atmosphere we absolutely love, and accenting them with greens and whites add a homey feel we can’t get enough of. (We’ve found adding different shades of blue really stands out as well!)
LANTERNS + WREATHS
Don’t limit fall décor purely to the indoors: add lanterns to the front walk for some seasonal warmth and decorate the front door with a leafy wreath for fall color to welcome your guests. Adding hay bales, corn stalks, or heirloom pumpkins can really make both pop! Your porch is the first thing your guests see when they arrive, so it can be festive, inviting, and get you in the mood for the upcoming holiday season!

garden legacy: from yard to table
with Jennifer Buczek BY KAITLIN DONNAN 38 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester
“
The garden is a wonderful place for people to come who just need to
heal their soul or to simply be. “
The Buczeks’ love of food doesn’t stop at the edge of the garden, however; if produce isn’t getting munched on or mixed into dinner, there’s a good chance it’s going to end up in a jar.
Their garden hosts a wide variety of produce and herbs such as tomatoes, peppers, carrots, green beans, basil, thyme, and kiwi trees, just to name a few. During a particularly impulsive yet humorous move, Jen planted jack-o-lantern pumpkins, which resulted in one-hundred-foot vines that wrapped around the garden twice and six pumpkins weighing at least 40lbs each! Despite its challenges, her garden has always been a place of excitement and hope. Jen and her husband do their best to involve the kids in everything they do. Daughter Eloise has loved going into the garden with mom since she was a baby. Frankie does as well, even if he isn’t quite as hands-on. “It’s valuable knowledge to pass on to our children. The idea that you can take a seed and grow a zucchini plant, which will produce enough zucchini that you can start leaving baskets of them on your neighbors’ porches is just thrilling to us!” Jen said. “Eloise has already gained a wealth of culinary knowledge and loves snacking on our homegrown strawberries and cucamelons!”
OLVE V N I –
“I have been canning tomato sauce with my parents for as long as I can remember—I don’t remember a time when we weren’t dodging the hot juices of tomatoes as we made a puree. When I moved out was when my interest in making jam peaked.” Jen has expanded to jams, jellies, pickles, and mustards, too. Some of her favorite jams are red currant and strawberry, not to mention the apricot jam she swears tastes like sunshine dipped in honey. “I pick all of the fruit for the jam I make myself, and it’s either grown by me or a local farmer—I have a spreadsheet with all of my favorite U-Pick farms!” Food waste is naturally unwelcome, and rather than throw away the unused peels and skins of vegetables, they end up saved to be used in a stock. Dehydrating apple skins makes for a great snack her daughter loves as well: stick them in the dehydrator at the lowest setting for about eight hours and add just a pinch of cinnamon and sugar. (The skins can also be used to make a homemade apple cider vinegar!) And when it doubt? “Compost—these are just small things I can do, but I think taking small steps is key.” In the end, Jen’s best gardening advice is to simply start! A number of herbs are easy to grow and add to just about any dish, and she encourages others to play around with some beginner plants that best suit them: peas, cucumber, basil, rosemary, sunflowers, and carrots. “Bulbs can be fun too—plant them in the fall and harvest them in the early summer. If you’re on the fence, grab a few strawberry plants and raspberry canes, stick ‘em in the soil, wait a year, and you’ll be blessed with the onset of some of the most delectable fruit at the exact right time to eat it!”

YOUR KIDS –
Jen recommends letting kids play in the soil—invite them to help you plant vegetables and be part of the watering process for the plants. Encourage them to join you in planting flowers and hunting for strawberries when it comes time to harvest. Jen and her husband follow the philosophy of “no such thing as bad weather” with a goal of reaching 1,000 hours outside with their kids over the course of a year. “I love the peace my kids feel after spending a good amount of their day outdoors.” Rochester | THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM 39

Five ways to teach your kids good financial habits The pandemic has turned many full-time working parents into teachers – juggling child care with schoolwork and a career. Despite the fact that school districts and educators are working hard to keep children engaged and learning, money management is rarely part of the curriculum. Now is a great time to add financial literacy to your kids’ lesson plans to help them build strong financial futures. Start talking to your children early about money – a good grasp of personal finance is one of the most valuable life skills you can teach them. Introducing kids to money in the ‘real world’ as early as possible helps them develop a better understanding of basic financial concepts such as spending, saving and even building credit. It’s important they also realize you’re financially invested in their future. Let them know that you’re planning ahead for their higher education – talk to them about how you’re committed to helping them avoid student loans and have opened a 529 account or another savings vehicle. Here are some tips for raising your kids to be smart with money and spark conversations that will set them on firm financial footing. 1. Set a good example. Money scripts are the relationships we build with money during our formative years – research sugests they are embedded within us as young as 5- and 6-years-old. These scripts highly influence our financial behaviour as we grow older, and are often formed by how we see our parents interact with money. So it’s especially important to show your kids smart money habits early on, such as paying bills on time and managing discretionary spending appropriately. This includes things like shopping on a set budget, using coupons and discount offers to pay less for goods, and making choices between new and used goods. 2. Create opportunities to earn money. Encourage your kids to learn how to earn. Depending on their age, they might do yard work for neighbors or offer babysitting services. Alternately, many parents begin paying their children an allowance in exchange for completing chores around the house – loading the dishwasher, mowing the lawn, raking the leaves in autumn or shovelling the snow in winter (pay can be commensurate with children’s ages). It’s a great life lesson understanding there’s pride in doing a job well and receiving a wage for it. Children often treat hard-earned money more carefully than just being handed allowances. More menial jobs especially also build character, helping to prevent them feeling entitled. And don’t forget that for older kids, a part-time job during high school always looks good to colleges and first-time employers. 3. Give them real-life experience. There’s no substitute for hands-on understanding so get your kids in the habit of saving by giving them a piggy bank or savings jar. As they get older open a bank account with a debit card and have their allowance sent to it automatically. However, make sure you explain that they’re spending real money when they use their cards – it’s very easy to not fully appreciate this when you aren’t handing over cash. It’s also important to differentiate between a credit and debit card, explaining that debit cards prevent you from overspending as you can on a credit card. The key thing to teach is that credit cards are not “free money” and should never be used without the money to pay the balance in full each month. And, if you have older children who are college-bound or perhaps buying a car, it’s a good time to share how to build a strong credit history.
4. Teach them how to budget and set goals. Use everyday activities like grocery shopping and going to the ATM to teach your kids about budgeting and give them the opportunity to ask questions about what they can and can’t choose to buy. As they get older, allow them to spend their own money on non-essentials and expensive items that don’t fit your budget. Talk to them about smart shopping techniques, differentiating between wants and needs, comparing prices and watching for sales. Helping learn to delay their desire for instant gratification for a “longterm” reward will enable them to develop budgeting skills and save up for special items that they really want in the future. 5. Set up saving accounts. Investing in your kids’ future is doubly important. Doing this not only means they’ll have more opportunities as they grow older, but it’s also a great opportunity to teach them about saving for the future and to explain the benefits of compound interest overtime. In addition to opening a 529 plan for them as soon as possible, you can also open a Roth IRA. Make sure you involve your kids in each step of the process: show them how to open the account, how to move money into it, and how to pick investments and why. Then, each month go over their statement and explain how to read it. The monthly fluctuations in the account are great examples of how savings grow. Add some math into the equation to show them how much that $2,000 could be worth when they’re 60 with the power of compounding.
Talk about good habits The most important thing is to open up the dialogue to teach children about money from a young age. It’s never too early to teach good habits and the sooner you start helping them learn about responsible money management, the more you’re setting your kids up for financial success later in life.
Talk to us about invesng in your children’s future today!

Sciency ROC Mom, Patricia Gogniat shares how! BY DANNY LINSER
Science has always been a part of Patricia Goginat’s life. From discussing science news at the breakfast table, to attending science camps, and to looking at water samples with her home microscope, science and exploration has formed the backbone of what Patricia does every single day. Using this passion, she has come up with two scientific experiments that you can do this autumn, which can be both fun and intellectually fulfilling for the entire family. 42 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester
“Nature is a tool to get children to experience not just the wider world, but themselves.” - STEPHEN MOSS
Gogniat, who goes by @sciencyrocmom on Instagram, currently lives in Irondequoit with her two children, a dog, a hamster, and a recently acquired tadpole of an African clawed frog. When she is not doing science experiments with her children, she works for VisualDX, a Rochesterbased health company which Gogniat describes as a “WebMD for Doctors.” When she is not doing her day job, Gogniat loves enjoying nature and teaching a thing or two about its importance to her two children.
ROC MOM
Gogniat is an advocate for the idea of forest schooling, which got its start in Germany with forest kindergartens. She uses this idea, which she has been a fan of even before she had children, with her own two children, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. When Gogniat is in nature with her children, some of her favorite activities include traveling, going to museums and learning new information there, renovating old houses, and just spending more time outdoors in general. “Normally, my kids are in daycare and public school,” Gogniat said. “But during the pandemic when everything was shut down, we engaged [in forest schools] more heavily, and the outdoors became even more of an important venue for learning.” One of the many reasons Gogniat is so passionate about science is because humanity has gained so much knowledge from the achievements that science has collected over the years. “Think of all of the technological advances, vaccines, and everything science has given us to improve our lives, and improving the health of people worldwide,” Gogniat said. “The principle behind it is about using technology to combat global warming and human brain power to combat the world’s problems.” Rochester | THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM 43
Out of all of the different scientific fields, Gogniat said that her favorite is chemistry because chemistry experiments are classically “sciency.”
Her fall time science experiments are colorful + fun to do with the entire family!
Mini Pumpkin Volcanoes This experiment combines two concepts that should keep almost any child entertained: carving pumpkins and watching things explode. While the results of this experiment are only “mini” explosions, it is a great way to teach your children about states of matter like liquids, solids, and gasses, and what happens when two different states of matter interact. To start this experiment, you will first need to obtain about one to three mini pumpkins, along with a suitable sized tray to hold them. Then, carve out the stem area of the pumpkin, the same area where you would start carving a jack-o-lantern. To make the explosion more exciting, make a smaller hole than you ordinarily would for carving. The next step is to place the pumpkins on the aforementioned tray that is big enough to hold all of your pumpkins and to keep all of the “lava” from spilling all over the place. A lid or a plastic strong container can work as well.
SCEINCY ROC MOM Then, add a few spoonfuls of baking soda, along with a few drops of dish soap. You can also add a few drops of food coloring too, but this step is only optional. Finally, pour a good amount of vinegar into a bowl and give your kids an eye dropper, baster, or a small measuring cup so that they can add vinegar to the pumpkin and start the mini explosion.
Leaf Matching Activity
In Western New York, there is nothing that says fall more than the foliage. This experiment will take advantage of the falling leaves and use them to help teach children the concepts of gravity, surface area, and tree identification. Gogniat recommends going to Highland Park, the Durand Eastman Arboretum, and the Webster Arboretum, to complete the fall foliage activities because they have good diversity of deciduous trees. Go to a local park, pick up fallen leaves, and try to match the leaves with the tree they fell from. You can accomplish this by studying the leaves’ patterns, shapes, and colors, and the tree’s shape and type of trunk. Bonus: Another experiment that you can do is stand on a park bench, hold two different sized leaves, and let them go at the same time. You would then observe which leaf fell to the ground faster and then discuss the reasons as to why one leaf fell faster than the other. You can also use a timer to official measure!

Ask the
Expert “How can my Children have a Successful School Year after 2020?” by Jody Lynn Greer
Educators are just beginning to unravel the toll COVID-19 has taken on students, schools, and communities. “What impact has remote learning and social distancing had on students, and how will it affect them moving forward?” Educators and parents alike continue to plan for the unexpected, as another lockdown may be on the horizon. Shannon Karcher Ed. D with Restorative Solutions is a certified education consultant who seeks to empower local communities, restore relationships, and close the communication gap between students, teachers, and parents. Once a struggling student herself, Dr. Karcher offers timely advice on supporting students as they go back to school.
Restore damaged relationships. So many times, a family is already angry by the time they come to me. One source of contention: remote learning. In March 2020, parents were asked to be patient, and many of them were patient. However, now, many of them want to see some change, and many of them want their children back in school. If they have to use hybrid or virtual learning, they want it to be meaningful and impactful. They want to make sure their children are learning and kept engaged. We first have to rebuild the relationships between parents, students, schools, and teachers before we can move forward. Otherwise, it will be a constant cycle. Build open lines of communication. Educators: Parents need more direction; they need a plan, transparency, and communication. Parents will be more flexible when they can be a part of the solution rather than feeling that COVID contingency plans are being done to them. Parents: Many kids feel anxiety about the school year. Some kids might need a social story to work through their concerns. Others need reassurance that sometimes a runny nose is just a runny nose. Talk to them and help them verbalize their feelings and questions even if you don’t have all the answers.
Target those gaps. I have seen several skill and learning gaps resulting from the 2020-2021 school year. Many parents are being told that their children are struggling. First, understand exactly how your child is struggling. For example, you may have been told that your child struggles with reading, but which reading skills are lacking: awareness, decoding, comprehension, fluency, or something else? Perhaps your child has difficulty writing, but which part of writing: the action or knowing what to say? Is your child typing or 46 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester
handwriting? Keep notes both of your conversations with teachers and your observations of your child working on these activities. With frequent educational disruptions, sometimes, the child simply hasn’t been exposed to the materials. Ask questions. Seek support. Request testing and get answers.
“Focus on what is best for the child and what will lead them to success. Talk to other people and find out what they are going through. Do not worry about being judged.” Know the signs. There are early signs that a child might need more support. Look for lack of engagement in school and/or behavioral changes. Does your child say they hate school, struggle to get up in the morning, or receive feedback from their teacher that they are struggling? If you have tried several solutions, but things still aren’t right, consider a Special Education (SPED) evaluation. Even if your child does not require SPED, testing sometimes picks up things that can be addressed for a better educational experience. Trust your gut and keep looking for answers.
Speak up. Families need to be empowered. There are people, including paid education consultants and parent advocates, to help you through every situation. Find out what others are going through. Talk about your concerns; don’t worry about being judged. Focus on what is best for your child and will lead them to success. Dr. Shannon Karcher has over 19 years of experience within special education in urban, suburban and rural education. Shannon holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and Psychology from St. John Fisher College (Rochester, NY), Master’s of Education in Special Education from Roberts Wesleyan College (Rochester, NY) and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Edgewood College (Madison, WI).

FALL INFUSED
COCKTAILS As the weather begins to get a bit chillier and Summer turns into Fall, our cocktails should change along with the season! Let’s face it, sipping on a hard seltzer just seems a little less appealing when you’re trying to stay warm and cozy. If your iced coffee has turned to a pumpkin spiced latte, it’s time for your cocktails to follow along! Here are a few easy recipes to try out if you’re looking for some fall-inspired libations.
Recipe:
3 Dashes of Pecan Bitters (Miracle Mile Toasted Pecan Bitters on Amazon)
2 oz. Bourbon
(Try a local favorite: Black Button Bourbon)
1/2 oz. simple syrup Orange Peel In a rocks glass add a few ice cubes. If you have trays for large ice cubes or spheres one of those are perfect! Add 3 dashes of pecan bitters to the glass.
Toasty Pecan Old-Fashioned
Pour in whiskey and simple syrup. Give the glass a few light stirs, then take orange peel and zest over top. Run the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop in for garnish!
A plain and simple old-fashioned on its own is a great cold-weather cocktail, but this recipe really kicks it up a notch. If you’re a fan of whiskey, you’re going to love this one. Throw on your flannel and cozy up fireside because this cocktail is sure to warm you up on the inside!

Recipe: 1/2 Gallon of Apple Cider
5 Cinnamon Sticks
If you’re looking to get that warm and fuzzy feeling without worrying about the aftermath the next morning, I have just the mocktail for you. One of the first things most of us associate with Fall are apples. Turns out that the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” originated during prohibition to get folks to start eating their apples instead of drinking cider, which is what the apple was originally used for! A boozy cold cider is a great Fall drink, but this alcohol free hot cider recipe is sure to do the trick as well.
1 Tsp Whole Cloves 1 Orange, sliced
In a large pot warm cider over medium heat. Add in the nutmeg and stir occasionally. Stick the cloves into the orange slices before adding those to the pot. Cloves could be a potential choking hazard, so don't skip this step! Add in cinnamon sticks and let the cider simmer over low heat for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve in a mug with cinnamon stick, orange and apple slices for garnish! Star anise also make a great garnish for this drink. If you want to make this a spiked cider, add some yummy bourbon. One to one and a half ounces per mug would be the perfect amount.
