Start Fresh in 2022 with these
Smart Tips from Life Coach Marissa Davitt BY AMANDA DUDEK
Q1:
Pandemic life is unpredictable. How do I move forward when so much is uncertain?
One good practice is the concept of just putting one foot in front of the other. It is true we do not have much certainty regarding when the next quarantine might pop up, what the rules and regulations will be, or whether or not we will have another surge. However, we do not have to be able to see that far ahead; we just need to continue along and roll with the punches. This is a good time to practice stress management techniques.
Q2:
Health concerns, change, economics, and more are challenging. What are some effective ways I can handle stress and worry?
Things like these feel like they are out of our control. This can really exacerbate our anxiety and make us feel helpless. Selfcare is critical. It is so important to turn inward, and we all have the absolute responsibility to do it. Sleep is so critical. It is also vital to move your body every day, choose good nutrition, plug into nature more, and unplug from tech use. Don’t forget to foster your positive relationships. Other humans in your life who are positive, give you good energy, and build you up are your support. Finally, consider working with a coach, counselor, or support group.
“Our biggest challenges are our greatest gifts.” 14 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester
Year’s resolutions are famous for being broken. Q3: New What are some steps for making lasting change? When you want to make a change, you have to be willing to sit in discomfort for quite some time. Eventually, the discomfort goes away when the new you becomes the norm. Also, recognize that motivation typically comes after taking action. Practice your self-discipline. You can’t get a ball rolling unless you push it first. Finally, remember that little changes yield big results. Set small goals that move the needle just a little bit. This will have a compound effect over time. Small hinges swing big doors. can’t hit a target you never set. Q4: You What is your best goal setting strategy? Keep it simple and focus on one or two goals. In doing that, you will already be taking on change in multiple areas. Next, set S.M.A.R.T. goals. The acronym S.M.A.R.T. stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time Bound. As you progress, take many different types of measurements for success. Finally, give yourself ways to celebrate your progress. of the hardest things to do is to move on from Q5: One hurtful experiences. How do I let go of the past? I love this quote: “Our biggest challenges are our greatest gifts.” Really reflect, whether with a coach, therapist, or on your own. There is a time for grieving, especially after trauma or the loss of a loved one. However, the people who have gone through incredible suffering and not come out bitter embrace positive inner scripts. Finally, find meaning in the events that have happened to you. No one needs to tell you what it means besides yourself. It does not define you; however, the meaning you find can empower you.

three essential “fresh start” skills from Q6: Describe which everyone could benefit. Perspective: Take the time to step back for self-reflection. Figure out exactly what you want in the areas of your life, and notice where your “buckets” are full and where they are empty.

Support: Consider working with a life coach, another professional, or even a group. Each of us needs a community, a support system.
Featuring natural products made from honey, beeswax, Elderberry and hemp, the North Bee was created out of beekeeper Amy Stringer’s desire to share her passion about bees, the byproducts the hive offers, and ways one can feel better naturally. Beeswax skincare, honey, propolis, and plant medicine products are all wonderful and easy additions to your daily self-care routine. Our natural products have so many health benefits. Stop in & see what nature has to offer!
Mental Wellness: If you are struggling, consider seeking out professional support from a counselor, therapist, or other mental health professional. 1 in 3 people is affected by anxiety or depression. There are many different approaches, so be open to finding one that is right for you.
Q7:
What is one of the best pieces of advice you have ever received about starting fresh?
Actually, it is this exercise: imagine if you could wave a magic wand and wake up one day to find that everything in your life was the way you wanted it to be and feel. Allow yourself to dream and pay attention to what you deeply desire. Then, figure out what about your vision is different from your life now.

We are more. Tricia TenEyck shares her secrets on how your home can stay more organized this season!
   BY RILEY SMITH
Tricia TenEyck is the leader of Life Made Simple Organizing, a Rochester-based organization and decluttering business. She seeks to help individuals and families throughout Rochester create a structure in their homes that will keep them organized for years to come. Before starting her successful business venture, Tricia was a real estate assistant. Upon realizing she enjoyed the administrative aspects of her job, she decided to leave her position to try her hand at something new. She came up with her business as a result of realizing her strong suits and wanting to use them to benefit others in a meaningful way. Just like that, Life Made Simple Organizing was born. Tricia’s business began because she felt confident in her skill set and her ability to help people. She noticed a gap in knowledge when it came to home organization. In fact, more people than you may think truly need a second set of eyes and hands to help them declutter and reorganize. With various obstacles in the way for different people, Tricia seeks to help them become the best versions of themselves by starting where the mess begins: home. Her clients enjoy the one-on-one experience she offers, as it provides a personal touch many businesses can’t quite offer. 18 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester
Tricia’s Take: The Best Habits of Highly Organized People • Put things back instead of putting them down. You’re going to have to do it eventually, so do it now! • Do routine declutters. Mark your calendar for every two months or so for the “problem spots” in your home. Keeping the routine purge will be helpful in the long run. • Realize that empty space is a good thing. Leaving room to grow is smart! • Don’t put off decisions when decluttering. Hide stuff you aren’t sure about. Then, set up a calendar reminder to come back to those items. Did you think about them at all? If not, get rid of it!
POST HOLIDAY SEASON:
TriciA's 5 Tips for Success The holiday season is a busy one for Life Made Simple Organizing. This season often brings on stress for people who are trying to stay organized, and this is where Tricia comes in. Here are Tricia’s 5 tips for a successfully organized holiday season.
01. Take Down the Holiday Decor + Reset After you take down your holiday decorations in January, it’s time to assess. What decorations weren’t used? Have they been used in the past five years? If not, it’s time to donate or toss them in the garbage. The post-holiday season is the perfect time to make these assessments because what you did and didn’t use is fresh in your mind.
02. Make an Inventory When you’re putting your holiday decorations away, it’s a good idea to make an inventory of what you have. Label your totes or boxes with what is in each one. This task will make it easier to grab something throughout the year and for next year’s holiday season. You won’t have to wonder what’s in each box or go through everything over and over again.
. . . 03. Take Pictures of Your Holiday Set Ups You may adore how you set up or decorated your holiday village, Christmas tree, hallway, bathroom, or living room this year. To help you recreate the same setup for next year, take pictures. They’ll serve as a reference point to remember what went where.
. . . 04. Store Items in Zones Create zones within your storage space. Holiday decorations should be kept separate from appliances, kitchen supplies, and other stored items in your basement, garage, or attic. To avoid losing anything, create a labeled spot in your storage area that keeps all of your holiday decorations together.
05. “What Did I Not Make Happen This Year?” After the holiday season, reflect on your hosting abilities. What was lacking? What were you not prepared for? What could be better for next year? In terms of decorations, what do you want in your home next year that you forgot about? To avoid lacking anything or forgetting again, make a point to write down what you need next year. Set up a calendar event on your phone for next October so you have plenty of time to get what you need.

Movement! G R AC I O U S DA N C E I N R O C H E ST E R S H A R E S H OW S H E PR O M OT E S WE L L N E S S T H R O U G H M OVE M E N T ! It can be as simple as a sway or as complex as a pirouette. Dance gives expression beyond words, bringing with it strength and healing. Rebecca Phelps, founder and instructor at Gracious Dance, is using her experience and talent to give the gift of dance to others.
At only 25, Phelps has already spent 20 years—nearly her entire life—dancing. While she had always dreamed of opening a dance studio of her own, personal tragedy was the catalyst that made her dream a reality. In November 2020, Phelps opened Gracious Dance. Her studio quickly took on a greater purpose. “Dance helped me heal through most things in my life, and I knew I wanted to help people experience that healing,” said Phelps. “I began sharing my vision on social media, and people responded. So, I opened up dance classes for those who needed them.” Gracious Dance began offering empowerment groups in April 2021, just six months after it opened. The classes are for people of all ages who
are in need of the healing dance can provide. Not only does dance boost mood and lessen anxiety, but dancers also experience a safe environment filled with sharing, understanding, and support. “We have about 10 girls who attend regularly. Some of them have danced with us since April, and we are so happy to have them,” Phelps explained. “We dance and we share food. It is a wonderful, beautiful thing, and the most amazing part is how connected these girls are. They are able to support each other and share advice because they have gone through similar experiences. They are learning and growing together, which is really cool.” Gracious Dance’s empowerment group has already performed in a benefit show for centers that provide shelter for survivors of domestic violence as well as held a personal care item drive, a clothing drive, and more. Phelps has seen a steady group of people coming to these monthly survivor events. Having started the process of becoming a nonprofit, Phelps hopes to expand these activities and services. “I would love to go to schools and colleges and talk about domestic violence. These are very vulnerable populations,” she said. “I would also like to do dance classes for children and offer this healing and support to them, as well.” As for Phelps, the experience has already been transformative. “It has been so healing for me and my story. I asked myself, How can I use this to help people who have been through similar experiences? Our empowerment groups have given my story a purpose.” Phelps plans to continue allowing dance to bring “something good” from all the hard things she has been through. “It is incredible to help people through dance and know that they really do want and need what I can give,” she said. “I am so thankful for it. It has changed my life.” - Article By Amanda Dudek -
