ON THE S T E L L A R R O O F I N G - R O C H E S T E R , N Y COVER FAITH. FAMILY. FIXING ROOFS. were able to get her insurance to cover the entire cost of the roof she so desperately needed. Everyone needs a roof; it is non-negotiable.”

Stellar Roofing owners, Daniel Shumway and Matthew Hebert

Matthew and Dan’s families are also involved, giving them motivation and support. “Matthew has been roofing for 20 years. As for me, my dad was a builder, so it is in my blood,” shared Dan. “Now, my son enjoys going with me to share our business fliers. Our wives are also very supportive. We owe everything to Jesus. Yes, we are managing Stellar Roofing wisely, yet we give all the glory to God for our success.” Professionally, Dan and Matthew also put their personal faith in modern metal roofs. Metal roofs last significantly longer than traditional asphalt shingle roofs thanks to their unique powder coating which prevents rusting and fading. In fact, metal roofs are so durable they come with a 40-year warranty, besides Stellar Roofing’s 15-year labor warranty. “These metal roofs will essentially be the last roof a customer will ever have installed on a particular home,” said Dan.

There is a positive energ y in the air you can feel when you walk into Stellar Roofing. This energy continues with managing partners, Daniel Shumway and Matthew Hebert. Matthew and Dan bring to the table all the youthful enthusiasm of a company seasoned with their 40+ years of combined experience. From asphalt shingles to durable metal roofs, Stellar Roofing does it all and does it well. Customer satisfaction is of the utmost importance with Matthew and Dan describing Stellar Roofing as a “customer first” company operating on the Golden Rule. “We treat every roof as if it were over our own home,” said Dan. “We think, ‘What if I felt this way about my house?’ and do our best to make all of our customer families happy.” For Matthew and Dan, helping families work with insurance is a priority. Matthew is a licensed public adjuster and an insurance damage appraiser, making his knowledge of insurance claims unparalleled in the industry. Assisting each customer who needs a new, durable, beautiful roof is truly a labor of wisdom and love. “It is a huge blessing to help a family get a new roof,” said Dan. “Matthew and I work very well with insurance to assist families in covering the cost of the new roof they need. One of our clients had the elements pouring in her roof, yet her insurance was denying her claim. We came in and 6 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester

Usually, such a high-quality roof would be expensive, but Stellar Roofing offers extremely fair prices. “There are three options when you hire a contractor for any project, including roofing,” explained Dan. “You can have the work done quickly. You can have it done with high-quality and good craftsmanship. You can have the work done cheaply. You can choose any two, but you cannot have all three. If you want good craftsmanship done cheaply, it may take a long time. If you want the work done quickly and well, then it will be costly. If you want it done quickly and cheaply, then the quality and craftsmanship will not be very good. At Stellar Roofing, we install your roof quickly and with excellent quality while working hard to keep our prices reasonable.”

“We are a local, family-owned business,” said Matthew and Dan. “We work to make sure everything is right for each and every one of our customers, making certain they are happy and satisfied.”

Stellar Roofing’s 5 Must-Have Tips for Purchasing a New Roof Insist upon an attic inspection. “A quick glance around an attic often does not allow you to see the mold that could be hiding there,” explained Matthew. “When we see damage on a roof, there is often black mold inside. Pay attention to loose granules, shingles that are cupping and other damaged areas. If you have had your existing roof 15 years or longer, your attic space should be inspected.”

Be certain your roof is well-ventilated. Good ventilation is key to maintaining your roof. “If your roof is not properly ventilated, it could be brand-new, but it will rot in less than a decade and be covered in black mold,” shared Matthew and Dan.

Consider the type of roof you would like. While asphalt and shingle roofing is certainly an option, Stellar Roofing highly advocates durable, long-lasting metal roofing. With its guarantee not to rust or fade for at least 40 years, metal roofing is a clear win for homeowners. “Ask the brand(s) of roofing materials a contractor intends to use and research

the quality of them,” said Matthew. “While most materials are similar in cost, many are not similar in performance.”

Beware of paying too much upfront. Is a contractor asking for 50%, 80%, even 100% payment upfront before even starting work on your roof? Recognize this bad sign and stay away! “At Stellar Roofing, we only collect 10% upfront and 90% upon completion,” said Dan and Matthew. “We put our money where our mouth is, making sure our customers are satisfied first.”

Know your contractor. When selecting a roofing contractor, check contractor reviews as well as the contractor’s BBB rating and reputation. Also, avoid contracting the lowest priced contractors. “For the most part, roofing contractors pay the same costs for their materials,” explained Dan and Matthew. “If you select the lowest priced contractor, you are usually paying for poorer quality work since the cost of materials is fairly constant.”

S TY LE D BY

Maggie Elizabeth by am an da d ud e k

You may have heard that when you look good, you feel good. For Rochester personal stylist and fashion blogger “Styled By Maggie Elizabeth,” this is more than just a mantra. It’s a way of life. “It may sound silly, but fashion means a lot to me,” explains Maggie. “It’s a way to express yourself and create a mood for your day. Everyone deserves to look and feel beautiful!” Maggie, a Rochester native, recently returned to her family and cool New York roots from the tropical heat of Miami. Her current wardrobe balances style and functionality to match her mommy-to-two-little-girls lifestyle. Throwing out the rulebook and inspiring those around her, Maggie Elizabeth’s casually chic style fits her day-to-day, coffee-to-wine life in any situation, whether warm sunny beaches or frozen snowdrifts. According to Maggie, personal style develops along with the stages of your life. “My style and sense of fashion are ever evolving,” Maggie reflects. “Through high school, then college, my 20’s, and now as a new mom in my 30’s, my style is constantly changing. As a mom, available funds have changed. I now love thrift and secondhand shops, and I host clothes swap parties. What no longer works for a friend might be just what you are looking for!” Always sought out by her friends for fashion advice, Maggie credits them with inspiring her shift to become a personal stylist. “My friends told me they would pay for the kind of style tips I give them, and also, that they would follow me if I posted my outfits and style advice,” Maggie recalls. “So, a little over a year ago, I started doing just that, and now, I have thousands of followers. I offer virtual e-styling, closet consultations, styling for engagement and family pictures, a personal shopping experience, help creating outfits from your own wardrobe, tips for your body and help finding your personal style!” Mood and comfort level play a major role in Maggie’s outfit choices. “I dress for the mood I want to be in,” Maggie says. “If I want to be confident and bold, I might wear a red lip and all black suit. If you feel good in what you are wearing, that confidence is going to exude from you. If you don’t, it will show through as well, no matter how beautiful the garment is.” Maggie’s go-to piece for feeling confident? Hands down her Dr. Marten combat boots! “I love them, especially in these New York winters!” exclaims Maggie. “They are year-round shoes that I can and do wear every season. I pair them with everything from a baby doll dress to a leather jacket with jeans to anything with a winter coat. I am constantly showing different ways to style them on my Instagram account @StyledByMaggieElizabeth.”

18 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester

As many people continue to work from home due to COVID-19, Maggie insists putting together a daily outfit is still important. “Even if you simply put on clean leggings and a t-shirt, it is something you do for you and you alone,” she shares. “It can set the mood for your day. During quarantine, I had weeks where I did not do this. Then, I began getting dressed every morning. I wouldn’t even put makeup on, but my mood was instantly better. This is really the key to feeling confident: you have to dress for yourself.”

Think color, pastels, florals, white jeans (it’s an up north thing), denim jackets, sneakers, floral dresses, and strappy sandals. Feeling really trendy? Shoulder pad tanks, wide leg jeans, spring color matching sweat suits and mid-drift flossing will be all the rage for you this spring!

Need a little help finding style inspiration? Maggie Elizabeth has some great tips to get you started! Shop your closet. You do not have to go shopping to find new and creative ways to style what you already have. Maggie recommends decluttering your closet by giving away pieces that you do not love, do not wear, or that no longer reflect your style. Then, start fresh. There are no fashion no-no’s here. “Fashion is a form of art,” says Maggie. “There is no wrong way to do art or look at art. You have to love what you’re wearing!”

Create a capsule wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe is a paired down, essential collection of clothing items that you love and that mix well with other pieces in your closet. These are the pieces you will use the most. For example, it is helpful to have a pair of light color jeans, dark color jeans, and black jeans, but they have to suit you. “One of my clients is a fun, exciting, ambitious Latina whose clothing read ‘old lady,’ and not in a good way. It didn’t match her style, and she knew it,” shares Maggie. “She loved this really teal mint green color. We revamped her closet, getting rid of the items that were not her and adding ones she loves.”

Find inspiration. There are many places to find fresh ideas. “Look online and see what brands and designers are modeling,” says Maggie. “Browse Pinterest for everyday outfit looks. When you find something you like, shop for something similar. Don’t forget to look in your closet first to see what you already have.”

Ready for Spring? What’s in this spring? “Colors!” says Maggie. “There is a fresh color palette for every season each year. After 2020, I am really looking forward to a fresh start with a new palette. For spring this year, it is softer pastel tones, and I love it!” Pastel tips for men? “Work this palette into your existing wardrobe,” advises Maggie. “Find pastels that flatter you. Then, try laying out your outfits as you mix and match.”

Maggie Elizabeth’s Spring Go-To’s: While she finds ways to wear pieces year-round, there are some warm weather pieces Maggie is looking forward to. “Strappy heels remind me of the sun, beach, and happy times!” says Maggie. “I love a good sandal and how simple they are. A two-strap sandal is so chic and elegant they can elevate any outfit. You do not need to have a lot of everything. There are essentials to fashion, and anyone can be stylish.”

HOME DESIGNS BY KAITLIN DONNAN

If there was ever a time to revamp and revitalize our living spaces, it’s Spring 2021. With tumultuous 2020 finally (finally!) over, we might have seen more of our living rooms than we ever thought we would. Maybe it’s high time to tackle some redesign projects and make our homes spaces we want to be in, rather than have to be in.

Rochester | THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM 23

This spring, expect to see design trends rolling out with bold patterns, high contrast, texture, and overall coziness. Spring is the perfect time for a refresh, and we love the look of combining unique colors and patterns built around your equally unique personality. Coastal textures give the appeal of natural wood, as

well as the bright colors we associate with the season. If the coast isn’t what you’re looking for, toss in a mix of metallics or geometrics, and play with color gradation. These trends are best used in low doses (think less is more!). Allow for a splash of color and conversation pieces. Even something as simple as a new throw pillow for the couch or replacing a lamp on a nightstand can go a long way!

In December 2020 Pantone announced the Colors of the Year for 2021 are Ultimate Gray and Illuminating (a lively yellow). Not only do these colors pair nicely together and balance one another out, but consider what they’re often associated with: gray is a neutral color often tied with being conservative and sophisticated, and the luminous yellow is tied with happiness and enlightenment, and—you guessed it—spring! If redecorating brings color, color and more color to mind, Pantone offers some suggestions for playing with those colors, whether you are planning to paint an accent wall or all four! Blues and greens can be fresh, invigorating, and dramatic. When used in kitchen cabinetry, these hues stand out boldly and can create quite the high-impact statement. (While the usual advice is to not go overboard, consider what personally appeals to you and your personality!)

Favor warmer hues? Yellows and oranges contrast with cool tones and add brightness and energy. (The 2021 Color of the Year Illuminating has even been called “an optimistic yellow, offering the promise of a sunny day.”) Experimenting with these hues adds pops of color that do well when paired with earth tones, giving you that feeling of spring, even when the weather is anything but.

Spring blossoms, too, meet us with an array of colors: blue skies, pale green grass and multicolored perennials making their comeback. Tulips and pansies add their pinks and purples which can create beautiful bursts of color in your home! These vivid and exciting colors are beautiful accent pieces that can add some striking and inviting character to your living room.

Play with the contrast of colors! Find what is not only

appealing to the eye, but to your tastes and your home. Can’t decide on one? Try out shibori, a trend we’re expecting to see more of this spring as it focuses on more washed-out dyes and blends—think of a take on tie-dye that isn’t quite so bold or psychedelic. Lastly, the scheme of any room can always be tied together with some grounding neutral tones. Earthy tones create a sense of comfort and relaxation in the home. Versatile as they are, these colors never go out of style. Those bursts of color, whether they’re purple or blue, pink or yellow, emerge more when combined with muted beiges or even grays. Whatever trends you opt for, be sure to choose the ones that best catch your eye and showcase your personality!

Variables to Consider When Choosing a

MEDIA ROOM The term “home theater” once made homeowners who love movies and sports dream of the day when they could dedicate a large area in their home to watching the big game or their favorite films. Such rooms are now widely referred to as “media rooms.”

Though the terminology may have changed, media rooms are not all that different from home theaters. Before choosing an area of their home as their designated media room, homeowners must consider a host of variables to ensure they get as much out of the room as possible.

LOCATION & SHAPE Of course the location of the room is of the utmost importance. Media rooms tend to be more social settings than traditional home theaters, which were often designed to be isolated from the rest of the home so noise and natural light did not adversely affect the film-watching experience. Homeowners may not want their media rooms to be in high traffic areas of their homes, but they needn’t be completely secluded, either. The renovation experts at the DIY Network note that the shape of a room should be considered before designating it as the media room. In general, square rooms are not ideal, as such rooms can produce harmonic distortions. A rectangular room likely won’t produce such distortions, especially when homeowners place their screens and primary speakers on short walls. It’s important that homeowners do not downplay the importance of sound, as media rooms, unlike traditional home theaters, may be used for listening to music just as much as they are for watching films or sports. Viewers may not recognize distortions when watching something, but homeowners may notice these abnormalities when listening to music.

WINDOWS

WALL COLORS

Media rooms are multi-purpose rooms, so homeowners don’t need to remove rooms with windows from consideration. But the experts at the DIY Network note that windows are hard surfaces that can reflect sound and distort audio, and the light that gets in through windows can produce reflections on the viewing surface. Each of those factors can adversely affect your listening and viewing experience. A room with windows can still make for a good media room, but you may want to invest in some blackout curtains to mitigate some of the disadvantages of having windows in the room.

The color of the walls in the room is another variable homeowners will have to consider. Homeowners won’t want to host guests for the big game in rooms with darkened walls, as that can create a dreary atmosphere and potentially make people tired. But especially bright colors will reflect light and adversely affect the viewing experience. Neutral colors should not affect the colors on the screen, making them the ideal color choice for media room walls. Media rooms are high on many homeowners’ renovation lists. Considering a host of variables prior to designating an area for a media room can ensure the finished product is as enjoyable as possible.

Q&A WITH HOWARD HANNA REAL ESTATE SALES AGENT

Irina Groysman

Irina, now a Howard Hanna Real Estate Sales Agent, has become a local expert to both buyers and sellers with her inside knowledge of real estate. She knows that buying or selling your home is one of the most important decisions of your life, and she will be there every step of the way. We were able to catch Irina for a few fun questions and educational tips for buying/selling in the current housing market.

The best thing about low interest rates for a home buyer is…

My all-time favorite food is... SUSHI! I LOVE SUSHI! People would be surprised if they knew…. I speak English and Russian. The word that best describes me is... HONEST! I am naturally a truthful person who really cares about helping others and will always be straight with you.

You may be able to afford more house than you think which will expand your possibilities! The very first thing I do is direct my potential buyer to a trusted mortgage lender so they can figure out where they are financially. Even if you were prequalified a year or two ago, do it again! Having this prequalification is also crucial in this aggressive market because it won’t delay your offer when you find the home of your dreams! 3 tips I would give someone thinking of placing their home on the market would be…

I secretly love…. 80’s music; the last concert I went to was Depeche Mode! When the pandemic is over, the first thing I’ll do is... Host a Dinner Party and invite everyone I know! My favorite pastime is... I know it sounds crazy, but I really enjoy cleaning my house and organizing. It makes me feel great to have a clean space and everything in its place! The best advice I would give a home buyer is…. Even if you are “just looking” it is best to go through a real estate agent rather than just window shop online. A professional real estate agent will have complete access to all homes on the market that may not be on the platforms you are viewing. They also have a pulse on the market, which will give you the needed edge in today’s competitive market. Enlisting the right real estate agent is like having your very own private investigator in your home search! 32 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester

Irina Groysman has an undeniable passion for real estate. Born in Russia, her parents moved her family to Brooklyn, NY in 1987. They became real estate investors, and with that, Irina grew up looking at houses differently than most of us. Learning to pay attention to aesthetics of houses and buildings, and the possibilities, this bestowed a love of real estate deep within her. It is no surprise that she and her husband of 18 years also became real estate investors too. Moving to Rochester from Brooklyn over 20 years ago, they began investing in local properties and fell in love with the area. They chose to put down their roots and start a family with daughters Gabby (17) and Victoria (16).

Now is a really good time to list your home if you want the best return on your investment. You can make small adjustments for little cost to increase the salability of your home. First, DECLUTTER! Start your “moving out” process by storing everything you are not using in your garage or basement. PAINT! This freshens your home and makes everything look new. CLEAN UP YOUR LANDSCAPING! Simple and clean attracts home buyers. The most important trait someone should look for in a real estate agent is… Experience and impressive productions are important, but not the only indicators for a successful match. Find an agent you can trust and that shows commitment to you and your investment. Find someone who will represent you with both integrity and tenacity, whether you are selling or buying your home.

take care of you

Featuring natural products made from honey, beeswax, Elderberry and hemp, the North Bee was created out of beekeeper Amy Stringer’s desire to share her passion about bees, the byproducts the hive offers, and ways one can feel better naturally. The North Bee can help you answer many questions: Can honey help with allergy symptoms? Should I try CBD hemp products to relieve my pain and anxiety? Can I naturally improve my sleep quality? Beeswax skincare, honey, propolis, and plant medicine products are all wonderful and easy additions to your daily self-care routine. “Let’s talk about the ways you can use beeswax products to hydrate and nourish your skin while calming any bothersome skin conditions,” Amy invited. “Our natural products have so many health benefits. Stop in and see what nature has to offer!”

Honey

Raw honey has a multitude of health benefits, from soothing a sore throat to allergy relief to healing wounds. Oral and topical, honey can quiet a cough, yet it can also treat burns and injuries thanks to its antibacterial properties. Full of antioxidants and natural enzymes, just a spoonful a day could make a difference to your overall health. It is a healthy boost! You can find honey locally or select from over 50 varieties sourced across the country. Some proven health benefits: • Heart health • Oral health • Gastrointestinal health • Neurological health • Wound and burn healing • Cough suppressant • Sore throat reliever

Beeswax

Beeswax is a humectant which also helps skin retain its own moisture. It can be used from head-to-toe, sealing and locking in moisture without clogging your pores! Effectively reducing dryness, it hydrates, conditions, soothes, and calms your skin. Beeswax also forms a protective barrier which helps protect your skin from environmental attacks. Some head to toe uses for beeswax: • Softens lips- prevents cracks and chapping • Quiets eczema • Reduces acne- calms without clogging pores • Soothes dry skin & moisturizes cracked fingers and knuckles • Benefits mature skin- improves aging signs such as skin and wrinkles. • Contains large amounts of Vitamin A • Calms sensitive skin • Smooths hair & moisturizes, reduces flyaways, and seals split ends

Elderberry

Elderberry syrup is a functional food that can support your immune system health. It is delicious over yogurt, ice cream or mixed in sparkling water for a fun, natural soda. You can even add it to your daily water bottle. We make our elderberry syrup with our local honey.

Hemp

Hemp derived wellness products are carefully sourced and available in edibles, teas, topicals, and tinctures. Let nature help you take control of your health and wellness today.

EFFORTLESS

skin care routine

W ri t

Let’s be honest, 2020 had its highs and lows and brought waves of inconsistency in all of our lives, but one thing that should always remain constant is self-care. Taking care of your skin all year-round is so important, and with the seasons changing your skincare routine may need to adjust along with it. Here are some tips to get your skin ready for Spring and to keep that healthy glow going year-round.

Protect

Let’s start with the basics. The healthiest possible skin is not going to come from an expensive night cream, but from the things we hear over and over again that all too easily get lost in our daily habits. We all know how important it is to protect our skin from the sun, however, this shouldn’t just be on Summer days when we’re expecting to be outside a lot. It’s a great idea to make sunscreen a part of your daily routine no matter what time of year it is. There are so many great products out there that incorporate SPF into moisturizers and makeup and won’t make you feel like you’ve got a face full of thick cream all day long.

Hydrate

Secondly, the amount of water we intake will directly affect the way our skin looks and feels on a daily basis. Keeping a bottle next to you at all times is a great reminder to stay up on your hydration throughout the day. If you’re someone who really has trouble remembering to hydrate, try reusable bottles with markers telling you where you should be on your consumption at each hour!

Clean

Whether you’re the kind of person who wears a face full of makeup on a daily basis or who likes to keep it a little more simple, it’s crucial to go to bed with a clean face every night. When you cleanse your face, not only are you removing products, but you’re also getting rid of all the impurities it has taken on throughout the day. This will also give you a fresh palate for your skin to soak up any products that may be part of your nighttime routine! It’s also a great idea to find something that will help exfoliate your skin at least a couple of times a week.

In need of some skincare that won’t break the bank? Moisturize

There’s nothing more irritating than having dry skin or chapped lips. The colder months especially can really do a number on our skin, which is why everyone should find a good moisturizer to use both morning and night. The neck is a part of the body that often gets overlooked when it comes to skincare, so be sure to apply your moisturizer to this area as well! Keeping a travel size lotion on you throughout the day can be really helpful. It’s also a great idea to use some sort of hydrating face spray that can refresh and perk up your skin when it’s feeling dull and dry. If your skin is feeling in need of a mid-week pick-me-up, using some sort of face mask once a week is an excellent way to hydrate and give yourself a moment of pampering!

Try this mask that includes just four basic ingredients to nourish your skin and give you a healthy looking glow. In a bowl mix ½ mashed banana, 1 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp orange juice and ½ tsp turmeric. Leave on for 15-20 minutes, rinse and moisturize afterwards. This DIY mask is super easy and will leave your skin feeling alive and glowing!

HEALTHY LIVING GUIDE

Enjoy the sounds of life. IMPROVE YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE WITH BETTER HEARING Hearing at our best is vital to good communicaon and sharing informaon. It complements our other senses and our enjoyment of music, discussion, and the sounds in our natural environment. It is normal to expect hearing loss as a part of aging, somemes slowly and somemes suddenly, requiring the use of hearing aids or a cochlear implant (CI). Hearing loss typically occurs in the high frequency range that make up so sounding consonants. Missing so sounding words can lead to misunderstandings, confusion, and isolaon, reducing the quality of life. Thanks to improved hearing aid and assisve listening system technologies, a more posive and rewarding hearing experience can be achieved. Hearing aids are designed primarily to improve conversaonal speech and depending on the type of hearing aid, addional features are available to address individual needs. Another issue typically experienced with hearing loss is the inability to hear well in loud environments or lively, reverberant spaces such as movie or live performance theaters, as well as in places of worship (places of assembly). Places of assembly are inherently difficult environments for people with hearing loss. The American Disability Act (ADA) addresses places of assembly by requiring the implementaon of an assisve listening system such as a Hearing Loop, Radio Frequency, or Infrared Systems. Hearing loop systems are the only technology that sends a wireless signal directly to a person’s hearing aid or CI. Those without hearing devices who also need hearing assistance can be provided a loop receiver with ear buds. The beauty of a hearing loop is that it provides crystal clear sound directly to the user by increasing the high frequency sounds while eliminang room reverberaon or other compeng sounds and improving the signal to noise rao (SNR). Hearing Loops improve the quality of life to those with hearing loss, both hearing aid and

non-hearing aid users. Loops encourage aendance to movie and live producon theaters and places of worship, which are vital to one’s quality of life. One of the leading Hearing Loop communies in the United States, Rochester, NY is home to several public looped facilies including The Lile Theater L-1, L-2, L-3 & L-4, The Dryden Theater – George Eastman House, MAG Auditorium, Rochester Academy of Medicine Auditorium, and Al Sigl Center Ontario Room, along with numerous houses of worship and local University classrooms.

Donald Bataille, Architect, and owner of Hearing Loops Unlimited, designs and installs assisve listening systems throughout NYS.

TIPS TO HELP MEN

LOOK THEIR BEST Though television commercials might give the impression that beauty and grooming concerns are exclusive to women, men like to look good, too. While many men don’t spend as much money on beauty and grooming products as women, that does not mean they aren’t equally as concerned about their appearances as women. Men who aren’t ready to go gray but are anyway can find products designed specifically for men who want to conceal their silver locks. Avoid dyes that might bleach all hair, including those that are not gray, opting instead for a product that tints gray hairs and still boast their natural colors. Especially since COVID-19, the beard boom has continued, but men who want to look sharp and well-groomed should make an effort to trim any wild facial hair they may have. Beard combs are designed to minimize damage to facial hair when used and can help to smooth facial hair that can appear unkempt. Some barbers even specialize in grooming beards, which can be helpful for men who are short on time or those with especially long beards that could use a little love and attention.

Skin dries with age, but men can take steps to protect their skin and keep it glowing as they grow older. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 and, ideally, one that includes moisturizer as well. Exposure to the sun without adequate protection can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles while increasing a man’s risk for skin cancer. Night creams that contain retinol can help smooth wrinkles and give skin a more even-toned look. Stress produces a host of negative side effects, some of which can indirectly affect appearance. Some people dealing with stress end up suffering from insomnia, which can contribute to bags under the eyes. Stress also can adversely affect hydration of the skin, contributing to dry skin. Stress also can contribute to hormonal imbalances that lead to skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. If stress is a problem, make a concerted effort to reduce it, even working with a physician to reduce stress when necessary. Men are concerned about their appearances just like women are. There are many simple ways for men to address their appearance so they look and feel better. Rochester | THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM 47

Fatty Fish A daily dose of an omega-3 fatty acid called eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, helped patients with depression significantly reduce their feelings of sadness and pessimism. Salmon, albacore tuna, sardines, trout, and anchovies are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

Nuts and Seeds The minerals selenium, copper, magnesium, manganese, and zinc have all been linked to mental health, and nuts are rich in each of those minerals. Dark, Leafy Greens Dark, leafy greens like kale, spinach and collards are rich in iron and magnesium, both of which can increase serotonin levels and help reduce feelings of anxiety. Dark, leafy greens also help the body fight inflammation, which can have a positive effect on mood. Brain inflammation contributed to certain behaviors, including low mood, that appear during major depressive episodes.

Dark chocolate Chocolate lovers may be happy to learn that dark chocolate can improve mood. Dark chocolate helped to reduce levels of the hormone cortisol, which has been linked to stress. When consumed in moderation, dark chocolate made of at least 70 percent cocoa can help people relax. Modern Rustic

LOCAL DREAM HOME Built in 1847, this home wasn’t functional for a local family of 6. With so much time spent at home, they needed a fresh start. Working with trusted professionals, Shawna and her family set out to create their dream space. She shared her favorite home updates, top tips, and ideas for people looking to remodel with Home Publications. 52 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester

NO CLUTTER

“I do much less fussing at the kids now that the remodel is done,” Shawna says. Everything has a space to go and they planned for that when doing their remodel– even a brush in the landing zone to brush their kids’ hair while eating breakfast. It’s a necessity for a family with daughters. Each child has their own “dumping” space where they can quickly place their coats, shoes, and backpack.

C R E AT E ZO N E S

The zone method is used to divide the kitchen layout by function and to provide you with everything needed for a specific task. Shawna said, “Everything now has its own area: the breakfast drawer, the table setting cabinets, baking/cooking zones, and dog supply drawer.” Our personal favorite was their AM & PM cupboards. (AM was filled with coffee, teas, and mugs, whereas PM displayed stemware, beer mugs and their favorite spirits!)

Shawna also recommends going for the big pieces you’ve always wanted. “Originally we weren’t going to do the microwave drawer; it was a little pricey for what it is, but we did, and I love it,” she says. “I really wanted a dual-zone beverage center. The kids can store their Capri Suns; my husband, his beer; and myself, my favorite wine. This way, it doesn’t take up space in the fridge,” she tells us while showing her French door beverage center built into her kitchen island. “Getting things out of the fridge like cans, seltzers, wine bottles and juice frees up space in there.”

OLD WITH NEW

Although they opted to get rid of their kitchen table that didn’t fit their family comfortably, they have some unique antique pieces around their house. From the barn beam fireplace mantle to Shawna’s old dresser as storage in their living room, mixing the old pieces with new ones brings new life into their space.

When asked why she picked the green theme, she said “Green is my favorite color.” And after all, what other reason is there to do something aside from it being something you love?

TOP TIP

Shawna’s top tip is to live in the house first. Her family remodeled their house for the first time in 2008. Once their family grew and they had lived in it, they realized how nonfunctional it was. “If you’re planning on having kids, have a toy room. Otherwise, expect that the toys will be all over the place,” she says. “Later, you can change it into a spare bedroom or an office.” 56 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester

The Many Benefits of Houseplants The lines between the outdoors and indoors are being blurred. Homeowners build extensive outdoor living spaces so they can relax on weather-resistant furniture and even cook in lavish kitchens in their backyards. In addition, indoor threeseason rooms full of bright, open windows that showcase outdoor vistas challenge the boundaries between outside and inside. For those working with limited budgets, there are some easy, inexpensive ways to enjoy the majesty of natural landscapes indoors. Houseplants can be used to improve indoor spaces, and they also provide various health benefits. ALLERGIES According to WebMD, rooms with houseplants tend to have less dust and mold in them than those without any foliage. Leaves and other parts of the plants serve as natural filters, catching airborne particles and allergens. Plants with textured leaves might be especially effective at trapping particles. MORE OXYGEN INTO THE AIR The human respiratory system works by bringing in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. Plants do the opposite during photosynthesis. They absorb carbon dioxide and then release oxygen. Plants can put much more oxygen into the air, improving indoor conditions.

INCREASE INDOOR HUMIDITY AND REDUCE ILLNESS Studies from the Agricultural University of Norway found that indoor plants can increase humidity in indoor spaces, which decreases the incidences of sore throats, dry coughs, dry skin, and the common cold. Higher absolute humidity can decrease the chances of survival and transmission of the flu virus. FILTER THE AIR Researchers who presented their work at the 252nd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society found certain houseplants can combat the potentially harmful effects of volatile organic compounds. Plants may help filter out VOCs like benzene, acetone and formaldehyde, which can enter indoor air via cleaning supplies, dry-cleaned clothes, furniture, printers, and paints. INTERIOR ATMOSPHERE Prevention magazine says plants can be used to screen unattractive areas, moderate room temperature by shading spots from the sun and even reduce noise. Plants also can improve ambiance and create a pleasing atmosphere in a room. IMPROVED MOOD Growing and caring for plants can alleviate everyday stress. A nationwide study from UK Magazine Gardeners World found 80 percent of gardeners declared themselves satisfied with life compared to 67 percent among non-gardeners. Gardeners were more positive mentally. Greenery can help people feel more at home and improve mental health. A rehab center in Norway found patients reported a greater increase in well-being four weeks after having greenery added to their surroundings.
