Miranda Quartaro, the business’ eponymous founder, has been involved in the world of event planning since she was 19 years old. Miranda, who always says the venue “homes the event,” believes it is essential to do in-depth research of each space. “It’s really important to find out exactly what you are getting and what you might need to add. [It] makes or breaks an event,” she advises.
Miranda suggests that when it comes to your wedding, remember it’s all about you! “It’s about you and your person. It’s your day. Don’t let others’ opinions affect that.” Working with MQ Events will help each couple stay on track for what they really want for their dream wedding.
Weddings can and should look very different from one another. For some, a large venue with black-tie attire and 300 guests is the dream. ROC'S AUTUMN CHARM
Aswe say goodbye to the summer heat and begin to welcome in autumn’s crisp weather and brilliant foliage, I feel slightly nostalgic. I suppose the changing of seasons always feels a little bittersweet to me, an ever-present reminder that life is moving oh so fast. However, I hold a special place in my heart for autumns in Rochester.
For starters, let’s discuss food. We have the best apples in New York State (in my opinion). I grew up going to Schutt’s Apple Mill to buy apples that always had the perfect balance of tart and sweet in every bite. Of course, if you are a donut lover, their mini fried cakes are next level. I love returning home and baking an apple pie or drinking hot cider with cinnamon sticks.
A stop to Powers Farm Market is a must for locals and tourists alike. With fresh produce, plenty of homemade sweets, pumpkins galore, corn mazes, their famous teepees, and hay rides, Powers is a fun-filled destination for families, couples, friends, or for a day on your own.
As a food-oriented human, I also love going out for a bite to eat in September and October, because the mild temperature is perfect for a meal on the patio. My favorite restaurants with outdoor seating options are the Owl House, Strangebird Brewery, and Bitter Honey. They each offer something for everyone, and whatever that something is, it’s delicious.
I try to prioritize time outdoors as much as possible this time of year. It is always a goal of mine to visit Letchworth State Park – with views of the waterfalls juxtaposed against a backdrop of bright red, orange, and yellow leaves, I feel simultaneously overwhelmed and humbled by nature’s beauty. Genesee Valley Park, Mendon Ponds Park, and Ellison Park are also beautiful places to hike.
If the weather feels a bit dreary as it sometimes does on an autumn’s day, I opt for a movie at The Little Theatre on East Ave or a trip to the Memorial Art Gallery. Of course, grabbing a pumpkin pie latte at Fuego Coffee Roasters rounds out the day quite nicely.
It’s probably pretty obvious by this point, but, yes – this is my favorite time of year, and I may be biased, but I think Rochester is looking extra pretty right now.

Going on bike rides or doing a HIIT workout session at home. Both keep me energized and fit, and I enjoy the variety they bring to my routine.

I enjoy hiking our local parks and walking by the water. These walks provide an opportunity to reflect and gather inspiration. Most days you can find me walking through our neighborhood with our playful pup, Lola.

I am a huge advocate for celebrating wins, whether big or small, and I often struggle to do it for myself. My goto celebration is a delicious treat - it satisfies my sweet tooth and my soul!

I chose the name “The House of Roushey” because my business is an extension of my home. It is an invitation to enjoy the simple things, while sharing conversations on life and growth.

Family breakfast at a diner with unlimited coffee refills, then shopping with my mom. An afternoon on the boat with my friends followed by a romantic dinner and walk with my husband.

Growing up in the Finger Lakes, driving past a massive landfill inspired me to rethink my waste habits. What inspired you to start your business?
I've always dreamed of starting my own business, beginning with selling candy as a child and later moving on to antiques on Etsy. My deep sense of patriotism made 1-800 Flags a perfect match for me. When I met the retiring owner, it felt like a serendipitous opportunity. So, on Flag Day, June 14th, 2020, I proudly took over the business.
What's one thing you can't live without? I can’t imagine life without music!
What does your perfect day off look like?
A perfect day off starts with a cup of coffee in the morning sun. Then a nice hike to a beautiful waterfall, or reading in a lounge chair by the lake at my family's cottage. A delicious steak dinner to end the day, and finished off with some Abbott's!

I can't live without my fur babies! Two dogs & three cats keep my life full of that joyful energy only animals can bring.

My go-to way to stay active is practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu! The sport has given me confidence in self-defense, along with making me physically and mentally stronger.
Ugh... that's a tough one, but I do enjoy a nice walk through Mount Hope Cemetery when I have the time. It's so pretty, has some challenging hills, and the residents are quiet.
How do you celebrate your wins?
My mom is the first person I go to with news of any kind of "win." She's literally my favorite person on the planet and my biggest cheerleader.
What inspired you to start your business?
"Roc Paper Straws" was born after seeing the video of the sea turtle with the plastic straw stuck in its poor little nose. I realized how much harm singleuse plastics are causing to our planet and I wanted to help make a change. Plus, we need an eco-friendly straw that "doesn't suck!" (pun intended).
What does your perfect day off look like?
Spending snuggle time with my granddaughters and/or my dogs.

Alice’s Red Rose is based on Alice in Wonderland and how the Queen of Hearts wanted the roses red. So Alice grabbed a paint brush and helped paint the Roses Red.

Effortless Chic
Choose one clothing item you own and love, then use it as your base. Choose a comfortable and versatile item that fits your body well. The versatility of your base will help you build fashionable layers. For her base, Vivien chose to style wide-leg pleated cargo pants three different ways. For a casual day out, Vivien wears a white button-up shirt, a navy varsity jacket detailed with pins and badges, and Oxford lace-up shoes for an edgy, prep-school look.
The Office Look
Follow the rule of opposites. Wear masculine with feminine, oversized with fitted, or casual with dressy. Pair a dress with a blazer or jeans with an elegant duster. The office is a great place to practice contrasting clothing styles. For the workplace, Vivien contrasts her masculine-like utility pants with a sheer feminine polka dot blouse. The statement bow at the neck depicts what working women in the ’50s wore in corporate America. Anything with a dignified accent communicates you’re ready to lead.
Date Night Glam
Play with accessories. Interchange outfits seamlessly with playful accessories. If you choose to wear muted colors for date night, elevate your look with bold accents. Vivien pairs her black suede moto jacket and kitten heel pumps with bow-shaped earrings and a thrifted silver sequin purse.
When you ask yourself, “What do I wear?” Vivien’s advice is to stay playful and give yourself a chance. You may think, “That would never look good on me!” but it doesn’t hurt to try lavish accessories, a pop of color, or wide leg pants. Take small steps, surprise yourself with unexpected clothing pieces, and your style preferences will emerge.

Real estate agent by day, Maggie Coleman of Irondequoit loves to work out. An avid weightlifter for almost 20 years, Maggie found herself paying more and more attention to her cardio workouts post-Covid. She says, “I have found that when I do more cardio-based activities, I feel better.” For the past year, she has tuned in more to tracking her step count and making sure she gets her body not only lifting but moving as a whole.
Maggie also recognized a need in the Rochester community for groups with no cost and low stakes for women to get together socially, be active, and meet new people. If such groups existed she couldn’t find them, so to fill the void, Maggie decided to create a safe space for like-minded women.
RocGirlWalks started with a coordinated walk just the first Saturday of the month, with a solid 20+ women at its first walk this past May. The group now coordinates 3+ walks each month, usually with at least one weeknight walk and a Saturday morning walk or two. Women come together to network, get fresh air, and get their steps in as they explore beautiful parks, trails, and communities around Rochester.
“Rochester is so big, so we strive to have different walking locations every time,” Maggie explains, adding that choosing locations across the community also helps “ensure we can reach the people of our community wherever they are.” Her top two favorite locations they have visited are Turning Point Park and Durand Eastman Beach. She says, “Both have amazing trails that bring you by water and woods, and both of them were so beautiful!” Maggie looks forward to RocGirlWalks’ first autumn for walks. “Not only is it the best time of year, but the beauty of the leaves changing color and the smell of the crisp air – It is unbeatable!”
Joining RocGirlWalks means gaining a supportive community, improving your fitness by getting in steps, boosting selfconfidence, and making new friends. “Every time we do a walk, I see new faces. It is continuing to grow, and it is just so beautiful,” she says. Maggie’s favorite moments with the group are when she sees girls come solo, anxious and quiet at the beginning of a walk, but by the end exchanging phone numbers and social media accounts with others. “To watch that is so fulfilling.”
Maggie says she’d love to continue to grow this amazing group, and she has set her sights on starting a podcast meeting with local businesswomen and sharing their stories with the Rochester community. She says, “I think there is a huge need to share more positivity in the community and I would love to continue to grow and do just that.”

She also shares her top DIY low-tox recipes and pro tips with her clients, ensuring they have safe, effective alternatives for home and personal care. Through her Instagram presence (@rocs_mane_attraction) and word-of-mouth, she educates and empowers a growing audience about ingredient awareness and holistic living. “It’s about sharing knowledge and empowering others to take charge of their health,” she says. Cici is always taking on new clients, noting that most of her newer clients are younger high school students going into college because they’re more aware of toxic ingredients. She teaches that “small changes leave a long-lasting impact,” highlighting the importance of making manageable, sustainable adjustments.
Cici’s commitment to helping others extends beyond her salon. She sits on the board of directors for Lupus Chick, a nonprofit that supports individuals with lupus. Lupus Chick provides an online community to help patients feel less isolated and depressed and assists with educational and medical costs.
Looking Ahead
As Cici looks to the future, her goals extend beyond hairstyling and wellness. She envisions a sustainable model for caregiving, inspired by her son, Levi, whose autism requires substantial support, and who has profoundly influenced her life’s purpose. “I want to create a group home model that doesn’t exist yet in the U.S.,” she reveals passionately, “a place where people like my son can thrive and be cared for with dignity.”

Shoes: To avoid bringing contaminants indoors, leave shoes outside or in a designated area like a vestibule or garage. This helps keep your entryway clean and reduces dirt and toxins inside.
Ventilation: Open windows for 20 minutes daily to improve air quality by circulating fresh air and expelling indoor pollutants. Aim to open one window on each level of your home.
Fragrance: Avoid products labeled with “fragrance,” as they can contain over 3,700 harmful chemicals. To protect your health, replace items like candles, detergents, and air fresheners with safer alternatives. Start by switching out products as they run out.

To network successfully, it’s essential to remain both authentic and strategic. Authenticity means honoring your personal values and communication styles while showing a genuine interest in others. It often involves building rapport before diving into business discussions. Being strategic means understanding both your goals and those of the people you meet to ensure a win-win situation. Make your networking efforts mutually beneficial.
In today’s competitive job market, making genuine connections is crucial for career success and personal growth. As a career coach based in Rochester, I’m excited to show you how networking can be both enjoyable and effective when approached as an opportunity to connect and engage. By blending authenticity with strategy, and refining your social media presence, you can turn networking into a rewarding experience. In this guide, I’ll also cover how to achieve a healthy work-life balance and build a personal brand that truly represents you. Let’s dive into these strategies to enhance your networking, find balance, and create a standout personal brand.
To be authentic, start by understanding your sociability preferences. Are you more introverted, extroverted, or ambiverted? I’m 60% extroverted and 40% introverted, so I’ve learned to respect my alone time to recharge. If you’re introverted but find yourself in a highly social environment, plan time to recharge during and after these interactions.
Familiarize yourself with social media platforms. While you don’t need to master every platform, choose two and become proficient. Post authentically and strategically, maintaining healthy boundaries while engaging with others (liking, commenting, sharing, etc.) both before and after your posts.
Achieving a Healthy Work-Life Balance
A key factor is ensuring a high-quality fit within your job, including responsibilities and company culture. This alignment leads to sustainable, high-quality work and life. To attain this, align your work with your goals and values, and be aware of your work/life values, dislikes, and stress triggers.
Daily work-life balance strategies include:
• Self-affirmation (I use a Credit Journal with prompts to affirm strengths, acknowledge accomplishments, and overcome gaslighting and imposter syndrome)
• Taking a 5-minute break every 25 minutes (Try the Pomodoro Technique)
• Stretching at your desk (Desk yoga is wonderful)
• Practicing deep breathing (such as the box method or a 30-second technique from the Emotional Intelligence Network – 6seconds.org)
• Taking a walk (outside, around the office, or at home)
• Blocking time (for lunch and between clients or meetings)
• Celebrating everyday wins (especially the small ones!)
Overall, work-life balance is about maintaining healthy boundaries. Learn to say no while remaining open to constructive feedback from trusted sources. Prioritizing is key.
My mom was a huge inspiration to me because I saw her career develop when she went back to college at University of Rochester when I was younger. It was inspiring and I saw her walk the stage!
Building Your Personal Brand
Personal branding reflects your essence and daily choices. It’s about your personality and values. In personal branding, this shows up in your spoken language, email tone, social media taglines, and your overall presence at events or online.
Personal branding also helps streamline decision-making. For instance, cobalt is my favorite color, simplifying outfit choices and shopping. If I’m not in blue, it’s likely pink or peach with neutrals.
Regardless of appearance, stay genuine. We don’t need to be perfect—personal branding is most effective in how we treat others. As Maya Angelou said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
To start your personal branding journey:
1. Think of Personal Branding as Personality + Values
2. Identify your top values, dislikes, and triggers
3. Know your communication style and social preferences
4. Choose clothing and accessories that suit you and make you feel energized or relaxed
5. Use 1-4 as a blueprint for decision-making, whether verbal, written, or physical interactions

Challenges Women Entrepreneurs Face Today
Women are increasingly successful entrepreneurs, now potentially outnumbering male counterparts.
Here are some challenges I’ve encountered, some gender-specific and others not:
• Determining which networking groups to join (I’m still navigating this, but I embrace the journey)
• Deciding how much to invest (and being taken seriously in conversations)
• Flexing communication (and creating space to stay assertive without judgment)
I’m a fan of flexing communication, especially as an ambivert who customizes services to people’s goals, values, and communication styles. Flexing communication is a valuable skill, particularly in leadership roles.
However, flexing communication can become toxic when unrealistic expectations are imposed. Often, women and historically marginalized individuals are denied the grace and respect to be assertive. Assertive communication is healthy and necessary. It’s not okay to force people into submissive or codependent roles. Everyone benefits from assertive communication and deserves the space, grace, and respect to use it effectively.
As you navigate networking, work-life balance, and personal branding, keep in mind that success is a journey. Be genuine, stay open to new experiences, and stay true to your values. By building real connections, finding your balance, and defining a brand that reflects who you are, you'll not only advance professionally but also find more satisfaction in your personal life. Here’s to making meaningful connections, achieving balance, and showcasing your unique self—cheers to your growth and success!

Emily’s enthusiasm for autumn shines as she talks about her favorite local spots. "A great place to enjoy fall foliage is the Erie Canal Trail in Fairport or Pittsford. The changing colors are stunning, and it's nice to see the occasional deer family along the trail. Plus, there are great eateries like Clementine’s for cappuccinos and Amazing Grains for baked goods."
She also recommends Long Acre Farms in Macedon, which continues its Music on the Lawn Nights into early fall. “Their sourdough wood-fired pizzas are amazing, and they have fun activities for kids and fire-pit rentals. Wickham Farms is another favorite for their cider slushies and doughnuts, with plenty of photo opportunities throughout the farm.”
SEASONAL SIPS & EATS
When it comes to fall recipes, Emily’s go-to is the pumpkin spice latte. “I make it at home using pumpkin purée, maple syrup, cinnamon, and almond milk. It’s thick and creamy— perfect for a chilly morning.”
For a traditional fall dish, Emily loves chili. “It’s a comforting dish, ideal for football Sundays. I also add turmeric to my recipes; it’s great in soups and stews and even in turmeric lattes.”
Emily’s favorite seasonal produce is squash. “Whether it's pumpkin, butternut, or acorn, squash is incredibly versatile and perfect for both sweet and savory dishes. I also keep cabbage for soups and apples for desserts.”
Cinnamon is another essential. “I always have it on hand. It adds a warm, spicy note to many fall dishes, from quick breads to curries.”
A PASSION FOR COOKING
Emily’s love for cooking developed from baking with her mom during the holidays. “It was a way to stay close to my family when I was away at school. Cooking has become a form of self-care for me, and fall is a cozy time to experiment with new recipes.”
Returning to Rochester, Emily embraced local seasonal produce. “Living here allows me to cook with fresh, seasonal ingredients from local farms, supporting local businesses and keeping my meals exciting.”
COMFORT MEALS & HEALTHY SNACKS
For a comforting fall dinner, Emily enjoys thick blender soups. “They’re quick and easy to make, and I love my blender tomato soup served in a hollowed squash 'bowl.'”
Her favorite healthy breakfast is apple pie waffles. “They’re perfect for using up small or bruised apples and can be made in advance. I pick apples at Whittier Fruit Farms and get cider from Power’s Farm Market.”
For snacks, Emily recommends homemade chocolate brownie bars (DIY Larabars). “They’re easy to make and great for a quick energy boost before a run or hike.”
Emily is passionate about food being medicine. “It’s important to have access to nutritious food that fuels our bodies and minds. Food brings people together and is an opportunity for continual learning.”
When she’s not cooking or baking, Emily enjoys running, reading, yoga, and gardening. She also loves trying new local restaurants, with Fattoush in Pittsford and Treetown Café in Penfield being among her favorites.
Apple Pie Waffles
INGREDIENTS:
1/2 c oat flour
2/3 small banana
1/3 large apple, chopped finely
2 tsp apple cider
1 egg
1/2 tsp baking powder + a pinch more
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tbsp ground flax
Pinch of cloves & nutmeg
DIRECTIONS:
Mix all dry ingredients in a small bowl, then add the wet ingredients and combine. Fold the chopped apples in last.
Pour the batter in a greased mini waffle maker and cook for about 3 min each.
For the topping: Sauté a diced autumn crisp apple in applesauce (homemade is my choice)
Mix Greek yogurt with a little cinnamon and a tiny bit of unsweetened original almond milk. Top with chopped nuts if desired.
Healthy Bars for Fall Hikes!
INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 cup raw, unsalted cashews
25 dried & pitted dates, soaked for 2 hrs in water
5 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 cup mini dark chocolate chips
DIRECTIONS:
Place everything except the chocolate chips into a food processor and blend until the mixture comes together.
Adjust the chocolate flavor by adding more cocoa powder if desired, or if the mixture is too sticky.
Fold in the chocolate chips.
Roll out the mixture on the counter or between two pieces of parchment paper until it's as thick as you want the bars to be.
Cut the rolled-out mixture into bars of your desired size.
Store in the fridge until they're gone (which probably won’t be long).
These taste so close to the real deal!

Emily's Tomato Soup
INGREDIENTS:
10 cloves garlic, chopped in half
3 medium yellow onions, roughly chopped
2 cups kale, packed
2 cans (15.5 oz) chickpeas (not drained)
1 can (13.5 oz) organic reduced fat coconut milk
3 (28 oz.) cans crushed tomatoes
1 (28 oz.) can organic fire roasted tomatoes
2 tbsp fresh thyme
1 1/2 tsp red chili flakes
1/2 tsp ground black peppercorn
Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
DIRECTIONS:
Drizzle EVOO into large pot.
Add kale, garlic, onions and pepper; mix so the EVOO coats the ingredients. Cover the pot to wilt the kale faster. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the veggies are soft.
Add chickpeas, coconut milk, tomatoes, thyme, and chili flakes to the pot. Stir well.
Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Simmer 5-10 minutes, then transfer the pot’s contents to a blender and blend until smooth (you may need to do this in batches). Alternatively, use an immersion blender directly in the pot or a food processor.
Pour the soup back into the pot and serve hot with toasted bread (sourdough is my favorite!).
For the Squash Bowl: Cut the top off the squash and scoop out the seeds. Bake in a glass dish at 375°F for 30 minutes. Pour the hot soup into the center of the squash.

While there are plenty of stylish items at department stores, you can find similar and often exact styles for less right at your local thrift store. Here's my top items to thrift for fall décor:
WOOD AND WICKER If you walk the aisles of Target, you’ll see a variety of wooden bowls, boards, and trays. However, I consistently find these items at thrift stores for $3-$5 and they are in great condition! You can style a wooden bowl with filler and mini pumpkins for an elevated look.
WREATHS I love a good wreath – they are such a warm way to greet people to your home. Wreaths can be pricey, but your local thrift will have a variety of donated styles. I have thrifted wreaths and removed the décor so only the structure remains, leaning toward an earthy vibe.
COZY TEXTILES Cozy blankets, throw pillows, and table runners abound at secondhand stores – look for plaids, knits, and woven textures to add warmth to your space.
VINTAGE READS Stack vintage books (remove the jacket cover) with brown and orange covers for a moody, fall vibe on your coffee table or hallway entry.
ARTWORK AND FRAMES Look for autumn-themed artwork and empty frames. A fun DIY is to fill the frames with pressed leaves you gather with your family!

Exploring Finger Lakes Wine Country from the Comfort of Your Couch

My Mother is the consummate host. She learned her skills from her Mom, my Nanny, who used to throw epic parties filled with good food, good wine, and great company. Over the years as Nanny aged, the celebrations shifted to my childhood home. From holidays to birthday parties to gatherings both happy and sad, my Mom hosted them all.
When I flew the coop and moved from Boston to Rochester with my husband, we kept the tradition alive. Turns out, I’ve grown to believe there is no better way to spend time than in your cozy place with your favorite people.
As a lover of food and wine, my gatherings always involve both, and I delight in introducing friends to Finger Lakes offerings. There’s excitement in the joint discovery of a snappy and delicious bubbly, a bright and fruit-forward rosé, or an artfully crafted red wine from upstate New York.
Our eleven narrow Finger Lakes were carved from glaciers that took repeated roundtrip journeys from Canada to New York during the ice ages. Alongside Great Lakes Erie and Ontario, they moderate both cool and warm weather throughout the year. The result is incredibly fertile land initially discovered by the Haudenosaunee (or Iroquois Nation) over 10,000 years ago that’s now home to a thriving wine country.
Though the land has been farmed for longer than most can fathom, there is still so much more to discover. Over the years, I’ve learned that the journey is half the fun and exploring with friends makes it even sweeter.
