Table of Contents Auctions And Antiques .............................Page 22 Auto Section ...............................Page 2 Brighter/Vent .............................Page 23
Keep a clean interior. New car ow ners typically maintain some strict rules w ith regard to food and beverages in their vehicles. After all, no one w ants their brand new car to succumb to stains or spills. But the longer drivers have a car the more lax they tend to become w ith regard to allow ing food and drinks into their cars, and that can ultimately hurt the resale value of the vehic le. M aintain a clean interior w hether you just bought the car or have driven it for a few years. M uch like an impressive exterior leaves a lasting impression, a clean interior that has not succumb to coffee stains or muddy boots is more likely to impress buyers than a car w ith an interior that has seen better, cleaner days.

RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

Sister Cities Youth Group Makes a Local-and International-Impact By Amanda Dudek and Jacob Pederson. At their most recent meeting, students were brimming with ideas, suggesting and reminding and committing to upcoming events. Sister Cities has certainly lived up to its purpose to “help others and grow [its own members] in empathy and compassion and to have a great time!” Although several of the group’s original members have graduated, the remaining members, who plan to recruit more of their fellow students, are showing no signs of slowing down. Charter member Isabella Shields and her mother, Kirsti Shields, just returned from a goodwill trip to India. “We were learning about field workers who work all day long and only make $1.50,” explained Isabella, an intelligent and active young woman who was just awarded the Presidential Scholarship at the University of Buffalo. Sister Cities Youth join Veterans for bowling!
A
steady stream of teenagers flowed into the small conference room behind the music room at Honeoye Falls-Lima High School, filled with open enthusiasm. Another meeting of Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Sister Cities Youth Group, now in its second year, began. Founder and positive energy powerhouse, Joan Haviland, explained that this is just a portion of the many students who participate. Haviland, a retired teacher of over 40 years, insisted that all Honeoye Falls-Lima High School students be welcome to join the group so long as they agree to work for the greater good and live by the Golden Rule. To Joan, as she insists the group members call her, this means helping those in need at home, in school, in the community, the country and the world. Already, during the group’s 2017-2018 inaugural year, these incredibly driven young people held a brunch fundraiser for children in Borgne, Haiti. This is a cause close to their hearts since Sister Cities Youth Group was birthed out of the Friends of Borgne nonprofit, a charitable organization which supports education in Borgne, Haiti, cofounded by Joan Haviland with Sarah Brownell. Sister Cities Youth Group members also held a clothing drive for migrants in Geneseo, helped at a Makers Faire at Lima School, hosted bread making night, made cloth dolls for kids at Strong Hospital, had a garage sale to raise money for doing good things, made dinner at Ronald McDonald House, assisted with Flutes and Flowers at Pinehurst, helped with Thanksgiving Dinner for refugees at the Rochester International Academy and made Christmas Cards for a parent’s friend’s child with cancer. In addition, Sister Cities Teens served at a Blue Star Mother’s Dinner at Canandaigua Veteran’s Hospital, visited Veterans at Canandaigua Veteran’s Hospital (which they continue to do regularly), served at Dimitri House for the Homeless, made blessings bags for the homeless, assisted at FoodLink where they sorted food for the homeless, sorted clothing at the Open Door Mission, planted flowers in the Town Parking Lot, gathered children’s socks and undies for the poor via the Open Door Mission and participated in fundraising and baking for Runners at College Town Rochester Running Co. Members, led by Leah Greenich, even organized a bowling fundraiser at local Miller Bowling Alley for breast cancer research.
Unsurprisingly, Sister Cities plans to help. “The Art Auction in May will benefit India,” said Joan. “It will benefit the House for Widows in India,” explained Kirsti. “Thirty widows live there, others are paid to work there and live separately with their children.” Kirsti added that many widows have no one to turn to in India, and many are forced by their families to beg and even abandoned by their children. “The funds we raise will also support the school that is there, which is a private school,” said Kirsti. “There are scholarships to help students pay to attend. Funds will also help with medical care, widow support and a second foster home.” Students also plan to continue their work locally. They will serve the homeless at St. Asbury Church as well as at the Dimitri House, both in Rochester. They intend to schedule another visit with the Veterans at the Veteran’s Hospital in Canandaigua and to connect with St. Joseph’s House of Hospitality. Isabella mentioned Community Wish Book as a resource of ideas. “When a student suggests an activity, we usually make them the chair of that activity,” explained Joan. “They lead. They are truly an amazing group of young people with a gift for serving others.” Sister Cities Youth Group, founded by Joan Haviland, is one of the inspiring groups we have chosen to highlight on International Women’s Day, (March 8th). Sister Cities looked beyond its borders, as well. They sent candy to those serving in the Military though Operation Gratitude, raised school supplies for hurricane and flood victims in Houston, held a Pancake Fundraiser at Critics for Guatemala, went on a goodwill trip to Guatemala where they helped with Safe Passage, a school for children whose parents work in the Guatemala City Dump, helped at the Hermano Pedro Home for the Developmentally Disabled, played with children at Hogar de Ninos Fatima who were taken from their homes due to neglect and/or abuse, sorted medical supplies at InterVol and took medical supplies and antibiotics to Hermano Pedro Hospital. Joan explains the students chose the group’s activities themselves. From the launching of Sister Cities in June 2017, Joan Haviland and parent Kirsti Shields have considered themselves “adult helpers” to student members, which began with charter members Isabella Shields

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY Physical side effects Stress affects more than the mind, manifesting itself physically in various ways. The Mayo Clinic reports that common physical side effects of stress include headache, muscle tension or pain, including chest pain, fatigue, and a change in sex drive. Upset stomach also may be a byproduct of stress. People dealing with stress may even have trouble sleeping.
Magic Maze WORDS WITH STRAIGHT LINES ONLY
DEAR DR. ROACH: I drink a lot of coffee, about 80 ounces per day. I feel no ill effects and have no stomach discomfort, but my wife says water is better. A kidney specialist basically said, “fluid is fluid” and that as long as I am hydrated, coffee is fine. With studies showing that coffee has antioxidants and reduces certain cancers, what should I do? -- M.K. ANSWER: People with long memories may recall that in the early 1980s, coffee was linked to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. However, the study has become a textbook example of poor design, and further studies have suggested that coffee drinking may be associated with lower risk of breast, prostate and oral cancers. I wouldn’t recommend drinking coffee just for this reason, as the effect size, if it really exists, is pretty small. As far as hydration goes, your kidney specialist is completely right. The caffeine in regular coffee is perceived as a diuretic (a substance that makes you urinate excessively), but that turns out to be myth as well, at least in regular coffee drinkers. One potential ill effect of caffeine is that it minimally decreases calcium absorption. However, this amounts to the equivalent of calcium in a tablespoon or two of milk, so it is unlikely to affect overall calcium balance significantly. Eighty ounces of coffee is a lot of caffeine, and some people will get jittery or have sleep disturbances. It also can have variable effects on gut motility (that’s a delicate way of saying that it commonly causes diarrhea, but it also can cause constipation). All that said, if you aren’t having any ill effects from drinking so much coffee, coffee is fine -- though I still think that, as your wife says, water is better for many people.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 64-year-old male. I had a stroke and lost vision in my right eye in 2005. I am right-handed. I had very high blood pressure at the time, and it’s now under control with drugs. Since then, I can no longer wear polarized sunglasses. I have light-sensitive eyes, but most over-the-counter sunglasses are polarized. My ophthalmologist and other eye specialists tell me they’ve never heard of my problem occurring. With polarized glasses on, I see in 3-D. Blue lines in the roadway and sewer lids or any metal covering appear to be 3-D to me. I have to be careful stepping over the handicap space lines because they look like curbs. Have you ever heard of this, or am I unique? If I can locate nonpolarized lenses, then I have no problem. Thank you. -- J.O. ANSWER: While everyone is unique, this is a condition I have heard of before. In fact, I know people who deliberately watch television with one eye in order to enhance the 3-D effects. Polarized light does tend to accentuate lines and edges, so it doesn’t surprise me that with your one working eye you have an accentuated 3-D sensation -- your brain has learned to use cues that people with two working eyes might miss. In your case, the brain has interpreted things so strongly that you are having some optical illusions. Sadly, I don’t have any practical advice beyond finding nonpolarized lenses. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Age Healthier With These Five Tips (NAPS)—As your wisdom grows with age, so can the number of pill bottles in your medicine cabinet. For those “young-at-heart” seniors, sticking to healthy habits is the key to aging well. With some simple steps, you can keep a healthy routine that also gives you more time to do the things you love. Joe Koren, pharmacy manager at Walgreens, shares his top five tips for managing your health with a busy schedule: 1. Consult the experts You know to go for regular checkups with your general practitioner, but don’t forget that pharmacists can also be accessible experts to answer questions about your health. In fact, your pharmacist is a licensed professional who provides different health care services including immunizations and can help you understand why and how to take your medications to support effective treatment. Some pharmacies offer extended hours, and 24-hour chat with pharmacy staff is available whenever you need it. Many locations also have health care clinics to treat minor injuries and illness, which can be a convenient and cost-efficient alternative to a doctor’s visit. 2. Let your smartphone help you With a packed list of to-dos, friends to meet and grandchildren to watch, medication routines can easily slip the mind. Luckily, your mobile phone is a helpful tool to keep track of your medications, right in the palm of your hand. For example, the Walgreens app can help you set daily pill reminder notifications, so you never miss a dose. You can also find closeby health care providers and arrange a video call for a face-to-face consultation with a physician or specialist through the app. If using your smartphone comes with its challenges, ask one of the pharmacy staff or a family member to help set it up for you. 3. Simplify your prescription refills Multiple prescriptions can mean multiple trips to the pharmacy each month. A trained pharmacist can recommend convenient refill options such as aligning multiple refill trips to one single date, switching to 90day refills or having eligible prescriptions sent directly to your home. All these services can make it easier to stay on your medication schedule and help save time. 4. Find perks in your Medicare D plan So you’ve signed up for your Medicare Part D plan, but are you using it to save money? Fortunately, many prescription drug plans include Walgreens in their preferred pharmacy network, which could mean a convenient way to lower your co-pays. A little bit of research into the right combination of plan, provider and pharmacy can go a long way to help you save money. Walgreens pharmacies even conduct senior days, giving you extra advice on health care topics and special offers. 5. Maintain a healthy lifestyle They say age is only a number, and when you’re in control of your health, that’s very true! With the time and money you’ll save from these tips, think about how you can embark on and maintain an even healthier lifestyle. Why not challenge yourself to walk for at least 30 minutes a day, connect with friends and family, or take the time to prepare nutritious meals? These five small steps can all contribute to a healthier life, and free up time and head space for the things you really love. MUST-HAVES FOR YOUR PADDY’S DAY PARTY When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, cuisine, hosts should not overlook the importance of providing some staples that people have grown to expect on March 17. Corned beef and cabbage might not be the most authentic Irish meal, but it’s become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and therefore earned its place on your Paddy’s Day menu. Hosts can start the day off right by whipping up a pre-parade traditional Irish breakfast, complete with eggs, Irish bacon, white and black pudding, and brown bread. Hosts need not feel beholden to cuisine exclusive to Ireland or those that have become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day, but making sure at least one such dish is available is guaranteed to please your guests.

It had fallen out of my bag. I was so VERY GRATEFUL!! It was so encouraging to see the help that she gave, along with the help that Hegedorn’s had given by calling my phone also. I will be sure to respond, in the future, when I see a need.
Last Saturday when I was at Hegedorn’s in Webster, I realized that I had lost my phone. I went to the service desk to see if someone had turned it in. No one had turned it in. I started to retrace my steps in the store, when a very nice lady who overheard the conversation, said that she would call my phone and we could listen for the ring. When we didn’t hear it in the store, she suggested we go check my car. It was there!
It’s refreshing to see and read, and then realize that there’s someone at the “Genesee Valley Penny Saver” who respects and cares about the English language. Whether you call it “copy editing” or “proofreading,” the publication has an expert professional who knows a lot about correct spelling, syntax, and grammar. Easy on the eyes and brain, even though we’re talking about advertising here, your publication presents an errorfree reading experience!
To the Venters sick of line budgers - Those are our “privileged” shoppers, and we deal with their “I’m in a hurry” daily. Some customers are extremely impatient, and when the lines are long, the quiet remarks and huffing and puffing aren’t going to change a thing. They realize that but continue to complain anyway. Also, why customers feel that it’s no big deal to rip open packaging and leave merchandise everywhere is mind boggling. We’re talking adults here. Working retail was difficult this holiday season. Some customers are so miserable that I feel sorry for them. They are wasting a beautiful life being that way, but they shouldn’t take it out on the cashiers.
Many years ago, I bought 2 acres from a farmer who raised cows. We had a very enjoyable 12 years there. We had great neighbors. Yes, we had 2 to 4 days each year that we could smell the natural fertilizer being spread, when the wind was blowing in the right direction. No big deal. 363 days had air quality so pure you can’t find it anywhere in the city. We also had unchlorinated water that contained natural calcium. The worst noise pollution was on the very hot nights when we were trying to sleep. Boy, the crickets can be loud! My advice to anyone buying a house near a farm is to perform due diligence. Think about it. If a couple of days of odor will ruin your life, don’t buy near a farm. For all others, I
Neighbors happen out of our choices! I am grateful to have nice neighbors, but on top, our next-door neighbor is really like our lucky charm. Moving from TX, I bought my very first home, with a 200+yard driveway in beautiful SUMMER, forgetting about WINTER. I was confident I could learn it all despite being female and foreigner and being housetrapped with 2 kids was not in my imagination. Well, either this is the worst winter in a while, or it’s me experiencing the homeowner reality... The 1st snow storm, my John Deere was still in summer mode. The 2nd storm, without chains it could barely move. The 3rd storm, I got snow tires instead. The 4th storm, it finally works! Every time, our driveway is magically cleared because a
lovely neighbor “quietly” sent the elves over!!!
My husband and I go to a local restaurant for a fish fry. Last Friday, February 23rd, we went and the hostess came and asked us for our drink order, but most important is, she took extra time getting ready for work that day. She was dressed in long black pants and a real nice black top, very professional. Kudos, young lady. Stop by and see for yourself at Gunsmoke Restaurant. Diane & Norm Thank you to my wonderful neighbor Bob for keeping my driveway cleared out. It is appreciated.
say, enjoy! If life hadn’t interfered, we would still be in that house and on that land. This is to the person who complained about being wished “a happy holiday”. You need to think before making such a comment. Not everyone celebrates Christmas. Some are Jewish and celebrate Hanukkah; others may celebrate other religious holidays. Bottom line, not everyone celebrates Christmas. So as not to offend those whodon’t and because you may not know what they celebrate, wishing them “Happy Holidays” is very appropriate and considerate. To the person who wrote that wishing others a “Happy
Holiday” is insincere: There are a handful of holidays in December, some that are far older than Christmas. To insist on wishing one and all a “Merry Christmas” is insensitive and disrespectful. It becomes all about you. Wishing others a “Happy Holiday” indicates a generosity of spirit and an enlightened mind. It is an acknowledgment that other’s holidays are just as important to them as Christmas is to you. It is no more and no less valid than any other. Further, treating everyone equally does not indicate an attack on Christmas. Whatever holiday you are celebrating, I wish you a happy and safe one.
