Beat the heat during a summer wedding Choose hairstyles and makeup wisely. Brides may prefer up-dos to keep hair off of their necks and allow for breezes to cool their bodies. Rely on makeup primers and powdered foundations so that makeup does not melt in the heat. Waterproof cosmetics are adviseable so that perspiration won’t cause makeup to run.

Beat the heat during a summer wedding Tailor the reception menu to the weather. A large, heavy meal may not be what guests are hoping for when temperatures are especially hot. In such situations, provide some cool, light fare, such as chilled salads or cold soups, as first courses. Sorbet can be a cool palate cleanser, and grilled meats and vegetables will make for a satisfying, light main course. Ice cream cake may be a decadent option in lieu of more traditional wedding cake. FRIDAY, JULY 6, 2018

As summer vacation winds down, thoughts turn from jaunts to the beach to readying for a new school year. To-do lists include many of the typical tasks that precede going back to the classroom, including shopping for new clothes, purchasing school supplies and finishing summer reading assignments. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your persistence pays off as the information you demanded starts to come through. The pace is slow at first, but it begins to speed up as the week draws to a close. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unwelcome bit of news jolts the Bovine, who would prefer that things proceed smoothly. But it’s at most a momentary setback. A Leo brings more welcome tidings. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You need to pay close attention to the details before making a commitment. Don’t accept anything that seems questionable, unless you get an answer that can be backed up. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Congratulations on getting that project up and running. But as exciting as it is, don’t let it carry you away. Make sure you set aside time to spend with family and friends. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Be sure you are part of the discussion involving your suggestions. Your presence ensures that you can defend your work, if necessary. It also helps gain your colleagues’ support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding needs to be dealt with, or it can grow and cause more problems later on. Be the bigger person and take the first step to clear the air. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Set some strict guidelines for yourself so your heavier-than-usual work schedule doesn’t overwhelm the time you need to spend relaxing with loved ones. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might feel a little uncomfortable being among people you hardly know. But remember that today’s strangers can become tomorrow’s valuable contacts. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Reward yourself for all that you’ve accomplished despite some annoying situations that got in your way. Enjoy a well-earned getaway with someone special. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Realizing that someone else is taking credit for what you did is bound to get anyone’s goat, but especially yours. Be patient. The truth soon comes out. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Forget about opposites attracting. What you need is to find someone who thinks like you and will support your ideas, even if others say they’re too radical. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Workplace problems can affect your financial plans. Be prudent and avoid running up bills or making commitments until things begin to ease up by the 27th. BORN THIS WEEK: Your intuition helps you communicate easily with people and understand their needs. (c) 2018 King Features Syndicate

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 71. I’m overweight at 300 pounds and have had Type 2 diabetes for 15 years. I haven’t had any chest pain or heart problems, but a recent nuclear stress test led my doctor to suspect buildup in one of my arteries, and he wants to do a cardiac catheterization. I do not want to do this, partly because I feel that once you let doctors start messing with your body, you will only experience more problems (like a stent or something) and your life will never be the same. I don’t want to offend the cardiologist, but I really do not want to do this. Am I completely wrong? -- P.R. ANSWER: Making a decision after knowing all the pertinent information isn’t wrong, even if it isn’t the decision the doctor recommends. I’d like to be sure you have all the right information. A nuclear stress test uses a radioactive dye to look at blood flow to the heart. Although they are very accurate, like almost every test, they can be mistaken. This is why your cardiologist ordered the cardiac catheterization -- the best test we have to look for blockages in the arteries. The risk in a cardiac catheterization, also called an angiogram, is low. If there are no blockages, that information is helpful and might allow your cardiologist to have you stop some medications. If you do have blockages, you have a choice of medical treatment (such as a statin, beta blocker and aspirin), catheter treatment (such as angioplasty with or without a stent) and surgical treatment. Knowing more about the location and severity of any blockage can allow you to make a more informed decision about what treatment is better. Stents and surgery would be less commonly used in someone without symptoms, unless the blockage were very severe or in a critical artery. It’s not unreasonable, given your medical history, to assume that there is a blockage that might need medical treatment. In addition to the medications I mentioned, taking excellent care of your diabetes, losing some weight, making sure your diet is proper for someone with suspected heart disease, and participating in a monitored exercise program all can reduce your risk of a heart attack. In fact, these are important even if you do get a stent or surgery. I don’t think your cardiologist will be offended if you can give him your reasons for declining an angiogram, even though he and I are recommending it in order to provide the best information to decide whether further intervention is necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Since turmeric is said to be a powerful anti-inflammatory, would it be beneficial to drink a cup of tea made with it? Especially for something like ulcerative colitis? -- J.B. ANSWER: Curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric, releases two compounds (TNF-alpha and nitric oxide) that can reduce inflammation. In ulcerative colitis, one study showed that there were fewer exacerbations in people who took curcumin along with their usual medications for U.C., compared with those taking a placebo. It holds some promise but is by no means a cure. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A shout out to Edgar at Cameron Community Ministries!! This organization is an urban outreach community center in the Lyell-Otis Neighborhood of Rochester, NY where 98% of residents in the neighborhood live in poverty. My husband and I had bicycles that we no longer rode and wanted to donate. We contacted Edgar who indicated that he knew of people who could use them. We set up a drop off time and were met by two guys who unloaded them from our vehicle. Within an hour after we dropped them off Edgar sent us an email indicating that the bicycles had already been spoken for. We appreciate Edgar’s willingness to help us give our

Mind your language!! I recently attended a local festival at a park. I'll get straight to the point. There were about 20+ teens playing basketball on a court at the park, and they were swearing like sailors! Using every cuss word available! From the F word to the N word. Let me remind you that there were families at the park that day, with 4 and 7 yr olds! Can we please mind our

Thank you to Jim and Julie for letting us use your pool. You guys are wonderful neighbors and we’re so lucky to have you - year ‘round! The B Family Thank you to Maria’s Sunshine and Dreams Fund, your organization is a beautiful representation of everything Maria was passionate about in

What happened to teaching your kids manners?? Hey....landlords who own property on 'the hill'...your rentals need TLC! PLEASE take the time to clean and spruce them up! They could definitely use some paint and the windows and porches are in desperate need of repair. Take some pride in the way they look. You reside at an upscale apartment complex, but apparently lack the common sense & decency, or of just being a good neighbor when you walk your dog to do his business, and then after bagging it, instead of taking it with you, you walk over to a nearby restaurant, and toss it

We are grateful for the many people involved in the foundation who selflessly give their time and energy to help kids and their families who have fallen into times of unexpected medical struggles. We have notified management, and they are now aware of your little scheme. You should be ashamed. Response to vent about married women's last name. Why is it anyone else's business what last name a married woman chooses? I never changed my name when I married 35 years ago, and neither did my husband. Women are not men's property. If police would just monitor that intersection, [town] could be RICH...! Response to vent about riding with your kids on tractors. It is none of your business if I want to take a child on the tractor, I will. If you feel that you are not steady enough to do so, then don't. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Your Seniors’ senses of smell and taste change with age Aging comes with several sensory changes, many of which people expect. Loss of hearing or diminishing vision are widely associated with aging. But one’s senses of smell and taste may diminish with aging as well. The senses of taste and smell work in concert. The sense of smell is vital to personal health, not only because inhaling pleasant aromas can provide comfort and stress relief through aromatherapy and help trigger important memories, but also because smell enables a person to detect the dangers of smoke, gas, spoiled food, and more. The National Institute on Aging says that, as a person gets older, his or her sense of smell may fade, and that will also affect taste. The Mayo Clinic says some loss of taste and smell is natural and can begin as early as age 60. Adults have about 9,000 taste buds sensing sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami flavors, or those corresponding to the flavor of glutamates. Many tastes are linked to odors that begin at the nerve endings in the lining of the nose. Medline says the number of taste buds decreases as one ages, and that remaining taste buds may begin to shrink. Sensitivity to the five tastes also begins to decline. This can make it more difficult to distinguish between flavors. Similarly, especially after age 70, smell can diminish due to a loss of nerve endings and less mucus in the nose. With the combination of the reduction of these important sensory nerves in the nose and on the tongue, loss of smell and taste can greatly affect daily life. Changes in these senses can contribute to feelings of depression, diminish one’s enjoyment of food and cause harmful conditions, such as extreme weight loss from disinterest in food to problems associated with overusing salt or sugar.

Receiving a diploma is something to take seriously, even for those students w ho are somew hat older than their fellow graduates. In 2003, Gustava Bennett Burrus graduated from Richmond High School outside of San Fransisco, Calif., at the age of 97. Ruth Hayes Green graduated from the Adult High School of the Perth Amboy, New Jersey Adult Education Center in 2010 at age 98. In 2013, 106-year-old Fred Butler, a student at Beverly High School in M assachusetts, received his high school diploma. He broke the Guinness World Record for oldest graduate previously held by Allan Stew art of Australia, w ho received a Bachelor of Law s degree at age 91 from the University of New England, New South Wales, Australia.

Although aging is often to blame, loss of smell and taste also may be tied to early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Cancer treatments, medications, lack of saliva, colds, flu, and other factors may contribute to sensory loss. Changing medications or treatments may help. It’s important to bring up diminished flavors or smells with a doctor to rule out something more serious and to determine what might help restore pleasure from smells and flavors. An otolaryngologist, or a doctor who specializes in diseases of the ears, nose and throat, may be able to help fix the problem, though some people may be referred to a neurologist or another specialist. Continuing to use one’s sense of smell and taste by cooking, gardening, trying new flavors, and experimenting with different aromas may help slow down the decline these senses. Although age-related loss of taste and smell cannot be reversed, some such cases may be treatable.

Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary. • Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily. • Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit. • Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment. • Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges. • Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.
