HALLOWEEN HISTORY Halloween may seem like a relatively modern holiday, and while it may have become modernized, Halloween traditions actually can be traced back to ancient Celtic rituals. It’s believed Halloween traces its origins to a Celtic festival for the dead known as Samhain. During the festival, people would dress up in costumes and leave treats on their front doorsteps to appease spirits that were believed to be roaming the Earth on this holiday. Many historians also feel that trickor-treating can be linked to the European practice of “mumming” or “guysing,” in which costumewearing individuals would go door-to-door, performing dances and plays in exchange for treats.

Ionia Lost and Found Oodles of heartfelt thanks to the individual who not only found my glasses, but also figured out that they were mine and left them on my doorstep. They have been missing for weeks, and I had given up all hope of ever finding them again. Thus, you cannot possibly imagine my surprise and my delight, on that morning, when they turned up on my front doorstep. I wish you had left a note, so I could thank you

properly, but since this is not possible, I do hope, at least, that you will find this note and know that you have made my day! You are amazing, and I am so grateful! Thank you, thank you, thank you! So Pretty! Thank you to the many homes and businesses that have decorated so nicely for the fall season! Mums, scarecrows, and pumpkins all add to the beauty of this season. Geneseo Theaters Open!

So thankful to have this fine, local theater back open. Sure have missed it. Happy for Jason and staff after having to be closed for so long. Livonia Rocks! Heartfelt thank you to the kind wonderful angels that quietly place these small slate rocks painted with great messages and inspirations. You make my overnight shift at local convenient store more pleasurable. May the Lord bless you and your families. In these days of divide, your bringing “New Normal” I agree that COVID-19 is highly contagious and potentially life threatening. I am sympathetic for people that have lost loved ones. However, why is nobody talking about the 8.1 million people that have recovered or never/hardly got sick after testing positive? That is roughly a 97% survival rate! Look it up; do the math. The numbers are available from reputable sources. Now we have “officials” saying not to spend Holidays with family? Ridiculous! TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

The Weight-Loss Battle Continues --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am looking for advice on diet pills. I have tried everything. I eat well, go to the gym and walk, but my meniscus problem limits my walking speed. Since menopause, I have gained 30 pounds. I am sure there is something out there that will kick-start my metabolism. I am so depressed, and my doctor has no sympathy. -- A.R. ANSWER: Difficulty losing excess weight is one of the greatest public health problems in industrial countries, and I’m not going to solve it here, but I’ll try to discuss principles of drug treatment for weight. One critical issue is to look at any medications you are taking: Many can cause weight gain, and some, like beta blockers, often used for high blood pressure, are unrecognized by many doctors. Stopping medicines that predispose to weight gain is critical. Depression itself is a predisposing factor to weight gain. Some people lose weight with depression, but my experience is that weight gain is much more common. Many anti-depression medicines cause weight gain. One, bupropion, commonly causes weight loss. Among medicines specifically for weight loss, most work either by decreasing fat absorption or by reducing appetite. They don’t really increase metabolism, with the exception of phentermine, which does increase resting energy expenditure somewhat and may be useful in preventing weight regain in people who have lost weight, for whom metabolism does often slow down. Orlistat (called Xenical by prescription, Alli over-the-counter) prevents the body from absorbing some of the fat in the diet. The fat is then excreted through stool. This may cause many people to have gastrointestinal side effects, which are diminished when on a low-fat diet. Orlistat caused people to lose about 7 pounds more than placebo. There are several drugs that work on appetite. Liraglutide is a diabetes medicine that has been found to be helpful in overweight people even without diabetes. Metformin is another diabetes medicine that is sometimes used for weight loss, although it does not have a Food and Drug Administration indication for this. Both of these diabetes drugs often have gastrointestinal side effects. Lorcaserin (Belviq) is about as effective as orlistat, but with fewer side effects (headache was the most common). Some weight loss experts use combination drugs, including phentermine/topiramate (Qsymia) and bupropion/naltrexone (Contrave). These have more significant risks. I don’t prescribe these drugs, but I do refer my patients who are interested in medication treatment to a weight loss expert. Look for a doctor who is board certified in obesity management. It’s important to remember that medications are not a cure for being overweight. Once the medicines stop, weight is expected to rise, unless a person makes significant changes in diet and exercise. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a female, 16 years old. My white blood cell count is 16.6. I am suffering from so much weakness and pain in my legs, arms and shoulder area. I also have a cough and cold. Is it dangerous? What should I do for it? -- K.C. ANSWER: I don’t have enough information to help much. A white blood cell count that high suggests an infection. At your age, those symptoms are most likely a viral infection, but acute mononucleosis and even pneumonia are possible, so you need to see your doctor. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. REDUCE INSTANCES OF DISTRACTED DRIVING

View our vehicles at cranesautomotive.com

Distracted driving is a problem that results in injuries and claims the lives of thousands of people each year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines distracted driving as any activity that diverts attention from driving. In 2015, 3,477 people were killed and 391,000 injured in the United States as a result of distracted driving. Allstate says distracted driving is now the No. 1 risk on Canadian roads, contributing to eight in 10 collisions. It is relatively easy to avoid becoming a statistic by reducing distractions behind the wheel. Put away tech devices: One of the easiest ways to reduce distractions is to keep phones and tablets out of reach while driving. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says sending or reading a text message takes a driver’s eyes off of the road for about five seconds, or long enough to cover a football field while driving at 55 mph. It removes a person’s attention from the road; takes his or her hands off of the wheel; and it mentally engages the brain when a driver’s focus should be on driving. Devices should be stowed away when driving. Drivers should pull over if they need to send a text or read a message. Set the GPS ahead of a trip Global positioning systems have revolutionized the way motorists get to and from locations. They can help signal upcoming traffic and find the best routes possible. Just like other devices, GPS can be a distraction, especially if drivers are taking their eyes off the road and constantly pressing buttons on the map. Enter the destination address before departing and place the GPS in a position that it can be glanced at, which will not impede vision. Better yet, let a passenger navigate. Limit or skip phone calls: Many people find that making phone calls while on the road is an efficient use of time. Yet the personal injury experts at Lehmbecker Law say even when drivers use hands-free devices their brains can remain distracted for 27 seconds after using voice commands to dial a number. Engaging in phone conversations will continue to take drivers’ minds off of their driving responsibilities. Drowsy driving is dangerous: Being tired can be a distraction as well. Geico insurance reports a U.S. government study showed that 37 percent of drivers have nodded off or actually fallen asleep at least once while driving. Drowsiness increases the risk of a crash by roughly four times. Those who become drowsy behind the wheel should pull over. Skip the infotainment package: New vehicle infotainment systems can take one’s attention off of the road for long periods of time. According to research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drivers using invehicle technologies like voice-based and touch-screen features may find themselves unusually distracted. In addition to these tips, drivers can reduce the number of passengers contributing to distractions, turn down the volume on the radio, and pull over when eating on the road. Reducing distractions can save lives.

COMMON HALLOWEEN PHOBIAS Halloween is about embracing the scary and the spooky and enjoying all off the things that go “bump” in the night. Naturally, the holiday can drum up some fears and tap into peoples’ anxieties, especially when they come face-to-face with some of the symbols of Halloween. Some of these fears may be full-blown phobias. A phobia is defined as an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. Phobias can elicit feelings of dread and horror. In psychological terms, it is an anxiety disorder in which a person will go to great lengths to avoid a perceived danger. This danger is usually much greater in the person’s mind than in real life. Several symbols of Halloween can be tied to phobias. A person with achluophobia may not enjoy the darkness of the Halloween night. Someone with coimetrophobia probably would not want to visit a cemetery. Coming in contact with a ghost would not be ideal for someone with phasmophobia. Anyone with wiccaphobia might fear meeting up with a broom-riding witch. One of the more common phobias is arachnophobia, which is a fear of spiders. Spider decorations are common come Halloween, so people with arachnophobia may struggle on and around October 31. While Halloween will never fall on the thirteenth day of the month, the number 13 has been linked to Halloween festivities. Many people view the number 13 to be a harbinger of bad luck. This is especially so for those with triskaidekaphobia, or the fear of the number 13. Believe it or not, some people have a crippling fear of Halloween itself. This phobia is called samhainophobia. which is the fear of Halloween or the fear of the festival of the dead. The term “samhainophobia” originates from “Samhain,” meaning summer’s end. Samhain was also the name of the festival celebrated by the Celts to mark the transition from summer to winter. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES

President

he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others.

Vice President

................... Kimberly Dougherty

Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one.

Controller

Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group.

Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located.

Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed.

Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater.

Serves 10 to 12 Amaretti Base 5 ounces amaretti 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter 5 tablespoons sugar Cardamom Truffle Filling 2 1/3 cups heavy cream 4 to 6 green cardamom pods, lightly bruised to open them 25 ounces dark chocolate (60-70% cocoa solids), grated 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cubed 4 tablespoons chocolate liqueur Cardamom Cocoa Sugar 3 green cardamom pods 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa 1 10-inch cake pan with a removable base, base and sides lined with nonstick parchment paper To make the amaretti base, finely crush the amaretti in a food processor or put them in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin. Melt the butter and sugar in a pan over low heat, then stir in the amaretti crumbs. Press the mixture evenly over the base of the prepared cake pan and refrigerate for 20 minutes. To make the cardamom truffle filling, put the cream and cardamom pods in a pan and heat until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and set aside to infuse for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, put the chocolate and butter in a saucepan. Strain the infused cream through a fine strainer onto the chocolate (the cream will be warm enough to melt the chocolate). If it doesn’t melt, warm over very low heat, stirring occasionally, but do not allow to boil. Stir in the liqueur, then set aside until almost cold, but not set. With an electric mixer, beat the chocolate mixture for a couple of minutes - this will give the cake a lovely airy texture. Pour onto the amaretti base. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or up to 48 hours before serving. To make the cardamom cocoa sugar, remove the black seeds from the papery cardamom pods and put the seeds in a spice grinder with the sugar and cocoa. Grind to a powder. Carefully remove the cake from the pan and peel off the lining paper. Set on a chilled serving plate and sift the cardamom cocoa sugar evenly over the top. Serve immediately, cut into very thin slices.

COVID Can’t Stop Them from Making Spirits Bright! BY AMANDA DUDEK ncredibly, Halloween and with it, the last vestiges of autumn are already slipping away. Foliage is beginning to thin, revealing the stark trunks and branches which will soon contribute to the severe beauty of frigid winter months. Thoughts turn naturally towards the holiday season fast approaching. For many, these are warm thoughts, filled with family and plenty. For others, however, these thoughts are anxious. Families are wondering if they will be able to afford warm coats and boots, let alone presents, for their children. Jamie Buss and Colleen Bedford of Making Spirits Bright are doing all they can to make sure these families have their needs met – and a little something extra – this Christmas.

I

support so many,” shared Buss. “When you look at the community outreach and the donations from those in the Greater Rochester Area, the response has just been tremendous. We have a phenomenal group of people who help us and support us year in and year out.”

It all started with a dream of bringing Christmas to families in need in Webster and Rochester. Making Spirits Bright, the gift-giving organization birthed from this dream in March 2014, took its inspiration from a friend and cofounder, said Making Spirits Bright Founder, Jamie Buss. “My friend read a news story about this gentleman who threw a Christmas party every year at a local women’s shelter in Syracuse and gave gifts to the women and their children. It inspired us.”

COVID-19 has been particularly hard on families this year. “A number of families reached out to us this year in need of cleaning products, toiletries and Jamie Buss and Colleen Bedford of food,” Buss explained. “For Making Spirits Bright the first time, we held a spring donation drive to help these families, and we added many more need items to the form we ask our families to fill out: things like food, masks, cleaning supplies. About 75% of families have checked those boxes, which is a far higher percentage than we have seen in past years. We have also established a list of resources for these families to help with things we are not able to provide. That was important to us.”

Jamie and her friend took this idea, and adapted and embellished it, making it their own. “It snowballed from there. The first year, we helped 13 families, then 41, 51, 52 and this past year, we helped 47 families.” This year, Making Spirits Bright has received requests from families they have reached in the past. “We do not repeat with families unless their circumstances have changed drastically,” explained Buss. “This year, we have further expanded into Rochester. We try to reach as many families as we can, and we have worked hard to provide a resource list to those we cannot help again this year.” Participating families, which are selected with the help of social workers, school administrators and mental health staff and others, are equally divided between the Webster and Rochester areas. Each family member requests four items they need and three items they want. Need items include such things as warm winter clothing like hats, coats, boots, hygiene products, toilet paper, toothpaste, bedding, necessities for the home. Want items are items like toys, watches, perfume, robes, small appliances. “A lot of our families reach out for furniture,” said Buss. “One of our families had lived with no furniture in their home for the past three years, so we reached out to the community for gently used furniture, including beds, chairs, a table, a sofa. They received furniture that Christmas. Our community is so generous.” “Businesses and families as well as community members adopt families and fill their Christmas lists. 30 families were adopted outright!” exclaimed Buss. “The remaining families and individuals are placed onto our Community List so that people can adopt a family, a person or purchase an individual item.” Buss explains that, in the past, all of the gifts were dropped off at her own home and the home of another group member to be wrapped at a community wrapping party. This year due to COVID-19, volunteers will wrap the gifts they pick up for each family. In 2018, they wrapped an astounding 1,600-1,700 gifts; in 2019, even more. “We brought them to one of the local schools, invited the community to join in and wrapped them in the span of two hours,” said Buss, stating that the gifts are then delivered the following week. “Our Making Spirits Bright Program has grown every year. For six years, we have operated out of our homes, which we outgrew long ago, but this year, the DiMarco Group generously donated office space to us in Baytown Plaza. All of the donations will now be brought there.”

To meet this new surge of needs, Buss and Bedford are turning to area communities. “If people are interested in adopting a family, they can certainly reach out; we can always use more,” said Buss. “This year, we are really looking for groups to donate toiletries, cleaning supplies, feminine hygiene products, and more. If anyone is willing to run such a collection drive on our behalf, we will certainly make sure it goes to those families which need it most.” Want to help or know of a family in need? SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Online Scammers Eye Holiday Shoppers Holiday shopping online is one of our annual rituals, at least for a portion of the gifts we want to buy. A much larger percentage of us are likely to shop online this year. That's what the scammers and thieves are hoping, anyway. The biggest threat this year is likely to be emails. You'll often receive an email from the retailer saying your purchase has been shipped, and there might be a link in the email about that delivery. Beware clicking it. It could be a scammer hoping to install malware on your computer to capture any future credit card or account numbers you type in. Or they might ask you outright to type in personal information such as your name and credit card number. Instead of clicking any link in any email supposedly from a retailer, go to the merchant's website to look for information on your purchase or call them directly. Take the phone number from your bill or their website, not from any email. You might also receive emails about items you didn't order and worry that your account has been hacked. Again, that is one way for the scammers to get you to click a link. Don't do it. Call the merchant instead. Just ordering online isn't the end of your steps to being safe. There are the porch pirates, those awful people who dash up to the house and steal packages right at the door. They often follow delivery trucks to see where the parcels are being left. Keep an eye out for your delivery. Or track it online. A final warning: Merchants often ask you to download their app to make purchases. You don't have to. You can still make online purchases without adding yet another potentially unsecure form of communication.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING

ROOFING & SIDING

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS When confronted with drainage issues that cannot be remedied by other methods, homeowners may need to install drainage systems. Such systems often employ French drains that are built through or around the perimeter of a property. French drains are typically a trench that contains perforated plastic pipe and is backfilled with gravel. Water runs into these channels and gets swept away by the piping. Do-it-yourselfers may want to try installing drainage systems themselves. However, because excavation is necessary, it’s often best to have the property inspected and marked for utilities, then have the drainage system installed by professionals.

PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE Plumbing Plumbing and pipes may be vulnerable to cold weather. Frozen pipes may burst and cause substantial damage to a home, potentially causing flooding and structural damage. Homeowners should disconnect and drain garden hoses before winter arrives. Water to outdoor hose bibs should be turned off, though the valves on these outdoor faucets should be left open to drain. Also, outdoor faucets can be covered with insulating foam covers. The Red Cross says pipes that freeze most frequently include pipes in unheated areas, such as basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces. Close vents to the outside in areas like attics and basements to limit the amount of cold air that gets indoors. Think about insulating unheated areas, as well as using pipe sleeves, heat tape or wraps on exposed pipes.

By opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, homeowners can allow warm air from a home to reach pipes under the sink. During extreme freezes, keep cold water dripping from a sink to prevent pipes from freezing.

COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT

O’Neill’s

(NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys.

COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs.

In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage. “A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.”

Since 1970’s

533-9307 • Call for free estimate

Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis.

OTHER

If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive.

ROLL-OFF

Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in.

Family owned for over 60 years

10 & 12 Yard Dumpsters Call now for pricing

Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19.

585-967-7919 REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME Testing can determine if radon is present in a home. Homeowners can rely on professional companies or purchase self-testing kits at home improvement retailers. If a test comes back positive for high levels, conduct a follow-up test before taking any measures to fix the problem. Unusual weather can increase radon levels. If repeat testing yields the same results, efforts to reduce radon levels are necessary. Homeowners must keep in mind that no two situations are the same and various techniques may be necessary to reduce radon levels in a home. Simply opening the windows in a home may not be enough, and many radon remedies require the skilled services of professional contractors who are experienced in radon reduction procedures. Homes can be fixed, but some instances may be best left to the professionals. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

More poll results The poll also found: • Only 17 percent Americans are aware of acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19; • Only 46 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 will likely increase the number of Americans with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure; • 58 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory failure; • 54 percent know it can cause pneumonia; • 52 percent of those surveyed know COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Can Indoor Cats Skip Yearly Vaccinations? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My two cats, “Sandy” and “Frankie,” are indoor cats who never go out and never even try to escape. I last took them to the vet about three years ago. A friend said I’m supposed to take them every year and get their rabies shot, but I don’t see the point. If they never get out, how could they get exposed? Also, vaccinations are expensive. -- Terry H., Buffalo, New York DEAR TERRY: I know it can be tough pulling together the funds to vaccinate your pets every year, but it really is critically important that they stay up to date on their shots. In addition to rabies vaccination -- which is required by law in most municipalities -- your cats need to be vaccinated against feline distemper -- a group of three viruses that are easily spread (they can even be tracked into the house on your shoes) and can cause severe illness and death in cats. If your cats have never received an FLV (feline leukemia virus) vaccination, they need to be evaluated and given this shot, too. Getting up to date on their shots gives them an umbrella of protection against these illnesses, because you never know what may happen in the future. What if they are spooked by a storm or a volley of fireworks, and dart outside? That’s dangerous enough without them potentially crossing paths with an infected cat. Call around for a better price on veterinary exams and shots. Low-cost clinics are held in many cities and counties, but you have to look online or check notices at the pet store or city hall. Community newspapers are another source to find out about these clinics.

HALLOW EEN CELEBRATIONS ACROSS THE GLOBE Candy, time spent w ith friends and colorful costumes make Hallow een a day to be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Hallow een also can be a lucrative time of year, as the National Retail Federation notes that Hallow een spending equals roughly $6.9 billion each year. But as popular as Hallow een seems, many countries do not celebrate the holiday.

Open:

Hallow een observances are limited mainly to North America and areas of Great Britain. Thanks to North American influence and trade, some elements of Hallow een have spread to other areas, including South America, Australia, New Zealand and parts of Asia. But Hallow een celebrations outside of North America may not be recognizable to those accustomed to celebrations stateside.

Part-Time Day Cashier:

Must be customer service oriented, be able to handle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment, be detail oriented, and be a team player, and a good communicator. Must be available for a 6 hour shift between the hours of 7am and 5pm.

AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS

In Scotland and Ireland, traditional customs of Hallow een include dressing up in costume or “ guising.” Parties may be held, and some people have bonfires or set off firew ork displays. Filipinos meanw hile return to their hometow ns and purchase flow ers and candles in preparation for All Saints Day, w hich takes place the day after Hallow een. In China, the Hallow een festival is know n as Teng Chieh. Food and w ater are placed in front of photographs of family members w ho have passed aw ay w hile bonfires and lanterns are lit in order to light paths for the spirits as they travel the planet on Hallow een night. In Latin America and M exico, Hallow een is know n as “ El Dia de los M uertos.” Translated as “ the day of the dead,” Dia de los M uertos is a three-day celebration that begins on the evening of October 31 and culminates on November 2. It is more a celebration of departed friends and family members than a chance to get hordes of candy.

Assess your budget carefully. You naturally will have to make concessions that impact finances, particularly as it pertains to spending. Cut back on non-necessities like dining out, gym memberships, streaming subscriptions, and other luxuries. Avoid adding other new debt.

In France, Hallow een w as relatively unheard of until the mid-1990s. It w as considered an American holiday and not celebrated. How ever, the draw of parties and costumed festivities led some French to embrace certain components of Hallow een.

HALLOWEEN SUPERSTITIONS REVEALED Halloween is steeped in tradition. Halloween season also is a time of year when superstitions take root and add to the spooky and often silly nature of the holiday. Some Halloween traditions can be traced back to the ancient Celts and their belief that spirits of the deceased were able to wander the earth during the time they called Samhain. Costumes were worn so the living could blend in with ghosts, and treats were laid out to appease the spirits. Over the years, additional Halloween superstitions have emerged.
