Warning Signs A Tire Is About To Go Flat

DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS

Snow tires can make roads safer for drivers w ho live in locales w ith long, snow y w inters. They also are ideal for drivers w ho desire more traction, cornering and stopping capacity on w inter roadw ays.

1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents. 2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror. 4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags. 5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. Learn More: For further facts and tips about good driving from the experts at Driving-Tests, founded on the universal belief that everyone can be a safe driver, go to https://driving-tests.org. There, budding drivers can also learn how to pass the written test the first time. Vehicles can be affected by the cold w eather. Keep them running efficiently to prevent damage this w inter.

Tires often produce w arning signs that a flat or blow out is about to em erge, so drivers w ho w ant to avoid such unfortunate developm ents can inspect their tires for the follow ing signs. • Varying w ear: Tires should exhibit the sam e type of w ear. The w ear on front tires and back tires m ay differ, but one front tire should have the sam e am ount of w ear as the other and the sam e goes for the back tires. Uneven tread on tires indicates that the tire w ith m ore w ear could be about to go out. • Worn tread: Em ploy the quarter test. Insert a quarter into the tread of the tire, w ith George Washington’s head upright. If you can see the hairline of the United States’ first president, then you need to replace the tire. Perform this test on each of your vehicle’s four tires. • Low pressure: M ake sure their tires are at the m anufacturerrecom m ended pressure, w hich can be found in a vehicle ow ner’s m anual or by calling the tire m anufacturer or visiting their w ebsite. An under inflated tire is under stress that can cause the tire to blow out. • Vibration: A car that vibrates excessively m ay do so because tires are dam aged. Whatever is behind a car that is vibrating, drivers should im m ediately take the car to their m echanic for an inspection. • Physical damage to the tire: Som etim es tires exhibit physical dam age like bulges or cuts, and such signs could m ean a flat tire or blow out is just around the corner.

MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE

Hello, I'm I was adopted almost 8 years ago, when I was 8 weeks old. I am a mixed breed cat. I am a real sassy-pants in all ways. I don't really enjoy being picked up or cuddled. If someone picks me up or I feel like getting into trouble, my pupils increase in size so much there is only a very thin ring of my actual eye color (yellow). Although I do enjoy gentle headbutts. My favorite pastime is napping, and I LOVE cat treats! :)

Purchase furniture that doubles as storage. Storage ottomans and benches can help clear common areas and bedrooms of clutter such as blankets and bed linens that can make rooms feel more claustrophobic. Storage furniture might not get excess items out of the house, but such furnishings can create a more comfortable, welcoming environment.

They Call Her “Mama Cindy” – Part Two By Amanda Dudek

M

ama Cindy Strasburg of Hemlock has become well-known serving our troops, sending hundreds of packages and letters to our soldiers abroad each year. What is perhaps not as recognized is all the ways in which Strasburg serves others locally. From Veterans to newborns, she continues to give generously to them and care for them all. “There are just so many avenues,” said Strasburg. “I am always looking for ways to enrich more people.” Strasburg recently donated 100 breakfast meals to Catholic Charities and gave Christmas packages containing breakfast meals, candy, hot pads and ready-to-bake cookies to Noyes for their 100 Lifeline seniors. Strasburg never does anything halfway, either. When she was picking up her granddaughter from school, she overheard a little boy getting on his bus talking to himself, saying, “Okay, okay, okay. I’m starving. I’m starving. I’m starving, but you’re okay. You’ll be okay.” She knew she had to do something. “Children can get free breakfast and lunch at school, but when they go home, they may not have anything to eat there,” explained Strasburg. “So, I adopted four classes, 69 children, and gave each child four presents: a book, gloves, a hat and a stuffed animal. Each child also received a breakfast package with: oatmeal, hot chocolate, candy canes, cookies and candy.” Strasburg also provided a gift for 80 teachers and aids. Each received a crocheted hot pad and a breakfast package like the children that also included tea and coffee to go. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Strasburg has a soft spot in her heart for babies. “I brought a donation to Golisano Children’s Center NICU,” she said. “I crochet blankets and put preemie outfits in them every year.” Strasburg was motivated by her granddaughter who was also a preemie.

Christmas delivered to Chances & Changes for In House and a Family Mama Cindy adopted for Christmas. Christmas coffee mugs and goodie bags were delivered to: ESL, Five Star Bank, Livonia Dollar General and Hemlock Post Office Employees along with friendship bread trays decorated with candy canes. “I also help with the First Steps program at Noyes,” she continued. She provides bundles for babies, makes blankets and burp clothes, crochets blankets and includes a little Christmas stocking for the baby’s first Christmas. “I think every baby should get a new crocheted item,” said Strasburg. “I wrap my items and other donated items in clear wrap and label them, ‘boy,’ or ‘girl,’ so that the hospital is able to hand them to mothers of newborns as a gift. I have been doing this for quite a few years now.” This is the second year Strasburg connected with Chances & Changes, providing gifts for boys and girls as well as breakfast packages, coffee, creamers, candy canes and packaged cookies for the Moms. This year, she adopted a family in need and provided Christmas for them. Mama Cindy says: “There is no cut-off-date when there is a family in need during the holidays!” Even while helping others locally, Strasburg never forgets her Veterans. “I donated 35 Christmas stockings for our in-home Veterans with Meals on Wheels in Mount Morris through the Office of the Aging,” she shared. One Veteran without family called Strasburg to let her know he hadn’t received a present in years. Last year, a 93-year-old Veteran shared with her that hers was only the second stocking he’d received in his life.

A Mama Cindy donation to Noyes Hospital’s First Steps Program along with friendship bread and brownies for the employees! Strasburg also adopts all 200 residents of the Canandaigua VA each year. “Each Veteran receives a new pair of socks and a bag of hard candy wrapped in Christmas paper, which are handed out on Christmas morning,” she explained. “I have also been making them neck pillows from flag-patterned, fleece fabric. They love them!” Strasburg also makes Bags of Hope for homeless Veterans through the Canandaigua VA program. “I make the waterproof bags with a shoulder handle, and they contain a fleece blanket, some socks, personal care items, a coffee mug with coffee, food and snacks,” she stated. “Then I sew an embroidered star from a retired flag on it along with this saying: This flag can no longer fly over an American home. The sun and wind have torn and tattered it, but may you carry this star so you know you’re never forgotten.” She has made 52 bags so far. Those seeking help in sending care packages to our troops find that Strasburg is more than willing to help. “A Ladies Auxiliary came to me recently about packages they were going to ship, asking for advice,” she said. “I showed them how things had to be put together and took pictures, so that they could do it on their own. Everything the Ladies Auxiliary donated supplied Christmas for the Marine Unit I just received in Norway: 27 Marines.” In the midst of all this, Cindy Strasburg continues to look for more programs to support. “I don’t want to waste any of the talents the Lord has given me,” she explained. “I am grateful to those who give so generously to make what I do possible. For example, Geneseo Kiwanis has donated $1,000 every year for the past twelve years. This will always be my heart and soul mission to help our homeless veterans, and taking care of our military, for they are going to take care of us. God bless our military!

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Jan. 12, 1932, Ophelia Wyatt Caraway of Arkansas becomes the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate. Caraway had been appointed earlier to fill the vacancy left by her late husband, Thaddeus Horatio Caraway. * On Jan. 11, 1949, on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C., the cornerstone is laid at the first mosque of note in the United States. The Islamic Center was complete with a 160-foot minaret from which prayers were to be announced.

Both Men And Women Resolve To Tackle Disorganization In 2020; Women Report Feeling More Stressed By Its Effects (NAPS)—If you’re ever determined to finally streamline your office “to do’s” and make a dent in your inbox, or committed to finding a way to keep the kids’ toys out of the way of unwary feet, you’re not alone. A recent national survey of more than 1,200 individuals conducted by the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO) for its annual Get Organized & Be Productive campaign revealed that a full 31 percent of respondents are putting “getting organized” on their list of New Year’s resolutions. While the data shows both genders on board with this idea, it also showed that for women, the ramifications may be more significant.

* On Jan. 10, 2008, Tata Motors in India debuts the Nano, billing it as the world's cheapest car. The bubble-shaped mini-vehicle had a base price of $2,000. It had a body made of plastic and sheet metal -- and one windshield wiper.

GO Month evolved as recognition that many view the fresh start implied by a new year as the time to finally tackle the disorganization in their lives—at home and on the job. The survey was designed to probe how feelings of disorganization impact men and women. “People have different levels of tolerance for disorganization in their lives, and what is acceptable for one person may be intolerable for another,” NAPO Executive Director Jennifer Pastore Monroy, CAE observed. “This was particularly true for women.” What The Survey Showed While half of all respondents said that when they feel disorganized, they find it hard to concentrate on current projects, more female respondents reported feeling stressed from feeling out of control of their environment than did men. Specifically: • Thirty-six percent of women said that looking at how organized or disorganized their home is, they feel stressed or completely stressed compared to only 22 percent of men. • More than half of women respondents (53.7 percent) report disorganization leaves them unable to concentrate on the work at hand, vs only 45 percent of men. • 35.5 percent of women vs 22 percent of men wished at some time for someone to come in and organize their home. Monroy’s advice to help streamline one’s environment? “Don’t wait until you feel out of control to tackle the stressors in your life. Having a professional organizer or productivity expert to help look at things with fresh eyes can encourage new day-to-day behaviors to create the needed change, whether you are a man or a woman.” Learn More For further facts and tips, visit www.napo.net. It’s wonderful to know there are good, kind people to help where and when you need them! On New Year’s Eve, my husband and I were at the Seneca Park Zoo and were caught in a snow squall while walking to our car. My husband took a tumble, and being seniors, this is always worrisome. He was unable to get up and had a cut on his head. A young man with his “You have voided the title,” she said with a gleam in her eye. By checking the wrong box on the backside of my son’s title, I inadvertently voided the entire document. My fault, but the consequence is a ten day wait on new documentation and $20. Thank you very much, DMV. My husband and I plant pots of annuals to beautify a little piece of highway along the lake along with his extensive gardens that he keeps expanding every year. We planted the pots around Memorial Day and just as they started flourishing around the end of June or early July all four of them disappeared! This is not the first time some pots have been missing, but all four? What a sad state of affairs! I cannot believe that you could bring these to your home, and no GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

out their faces. I have also had people tell me they shot a deer with a deer slug. Then, when they skinned it, it had buckshot or bird shot in the hide. Another friend got a buck. He had to throw the meat out when he skinned it because there was a rotten spot from the neck to the front leg. It was 7pm, and I was washing dishes. I looked across the road and saw a spotlight going into my horse pasture. The light was coming from a car. He backed up to look more. When he saw me come out, he sped off. Had I not come outside and turned the porch light on, he may have shot my horse. On Wed 11/20/19 around sundown, you killed Stevie, a silly brindle mutt we loved for just over a year. not to jump up and to stop chasing the cats someday. You also shot Henry, a Husky mix who probably initiated the escape from our fenced-in back yard. After dark, Henry limped home, collapsing in the road. Our kids came screaming. We scooped him up, and the battle to save Henry’s life began. His wounds looked like a gunshot, (through and through) later confirmed by the vet. Yes, 6 children got to see what a deer slug does to a dog and will forever imagine a beloved family pet dying out there, never to be found. Henry died despite our valiant effort. FYI, it’s illegal to shoot a dog, except in self-defense. Somebody knows something. Please call the Sheriff with information on our two dogs shot and killed in [local town].

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) That lower-thanacceptable performance you’re getting from others in your group might be the result of miscommunication. If so, correct it before serious problems arise later on. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unexpected situation could call for a change of plans. If so, you might feel that this is unfair. But it’s best to make the needed adjustments now. There’ll be time later for rescheduling. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The new year brings opportunities you might want to look into. Some might be more interesting than others. But take time to look at all of them before you make any decisions. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s a good idea to be careful about expenses until you’ve worked out that pesky financial problem. You might find it advisable to get some solid advice on how to proceed. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Romance looms large over the Leonine aspect. Single Lions looking for love should find Cupid very cooperative. Paired Cats can expect a renewed closeness in their relationships. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Making contact with a former colleague might not be high on your list of priorities. But it could pay off personally as well as professionally. Avoid bringing up any negatives about the past. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A personal relationship could face added stress because of a situation involving someone close to both of you. Be supportive and, above all, try to avoid playing the blame game. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might well find some lingering uncertainties about a decision. If so, take that as a warning that you might not be ready to make that move yet. More study would be in order. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Music is a dominant theme for Sagittarians right now, and it should remind you to make a greater effort to restore some much-needed harmony in that very special relationship. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although family matters might demand much of the Sea Goat’s attention this week, you’ll want to try to make time to handle those all-important workplace situations as well. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A recurring unresolved issue might need to be revisited before you can move forward. Consider asking someone familiar with the situation to act as an impartial counselor. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Ignore pressure to make a decision. Keeping your options open is still the wisest course, at least until you’re sure you’ve learned all you need to know about the matter at hand. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re capable of great loyalty to those around you, which is one reason you can count on devotion from friends and family. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Doctors Disagree on Blood Pressure Target

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta

---

20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 91-year-old male. When I switched primary care physicians, my new doctor shook his head because my previous doctor had never told me about my low GFR readings and being borderline diabetic. In the past I had assumed that if the doctor didn’t mention any low or high blood test results, everything must be OK. I no longer assume: I ask for a copy of the results and question them. The new doctor referred me to a nephrologist. My blood pressure at the time was usually in the 130-140/60-70 range. He told me that for a person of my age, that was too low. He gave me a target of 159/89. Then on my next visit to primary care, I was told that my blood pressure was too high; I was prescribed losartan. I am testing my blood pressure daily, and the past few days it has been in the 170s. So, what is a good target for my blood pressure? Which doctor is correct? -- A.L. ANSWER: There is no absolute right answer to your question. On the one hand, overaggressive treatment of blood pressure in a 91-year-old is unnecessary and may lead to symptoms of lightheadedness, especially upon standing. Other blood pressure drugs may have additional side effects. On the other hand, a 91-year-old has a higher risk for heart disease and stroke, and in someone with a low GFR reading (a measurement of kidney function) and borderline diabetes (which further increases the risk of heart attack and stroke), most experts would aim for a blood pressure goal that is closer to 120-130/80-85, as long as it isn’t causing annoying symptoms. I’m not clear why the doctor wasn’t happy with your usual blood pressure, since a level of 130-140/60s seems very reasonable for a man your age if you aren’t having side effects. If 170 is the usual systolic pressure on your new regimen, I would ask about going back to the old one.

Caring for you and the community since 2001.

FOUR IDEAS FOR HEALTH CARE PLANNING IN RETIREMENT (NAPSI)—The Employee Benefit Research Institute estimates that a typical 65-year-old couple will spend a total of $265,000 in health care costs over the remainder of their lives. This staggering amount of money has the potential to derail even the best-laid retirement plans. Vanguard and Mercer recently developed a new framework, “Planning for Health Care Costs in Retirement,” that identifies practical tips for forecasting your health care expenses. Here are four top ideas: 1. Personalize health care costs. Start by understanding how your health history and current health status will influence expenses. Even your geographic location, marital status and age at retirement will impact your forecasts. 2. Plan for long-term care. This is a tough one to assess because half of retirees won’t even incur these costs, but on the other end of the spectrum, 15 percent of retirees will spend more than $250,000. Consider potential long-term care options, such as unpaid care from family and less-expensive available facilities.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I always have had small breasts. Suddenly, in my mid-70s, my breasts grew, and now at 80 I have outgrown most of my clothes. My doctor said that it is fat, but I have gained only a few pounds. Could this be hormonal? Have you addressed this issue before? -- S.F. ANSWER: I haven’t addressed this before. Breasts change size during a woman’s life for many reasons. Breast tissue is a mixture of fat and glandular tissue. For young women, there’s proportionally more glandular tissue, the amount of which tends to decrease over time. After menopause, the breasts become less glandular; what is lost is replaced by fat, as there is less estrogen. About 20% of women will notice significantly larger breasts after menopause; however, this usually occurs along with overall weight gain. Significant breast enlargement without much weight gain is not common in my experience. Hopefully, your doctor did a thorough examination. However, I think it is very unlikely that your breast size changes represent a tumor. Very rarely, there are estrogen-producing tumors, so if there were other reasons to be concerned, your doctor might check blood levels of hormones, including estrogen. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. 3. Create a hedge in your budget for other expenses. Research shows that retirement spending in virtually all categories other than health care tends to decline with age. By forecasting steady spending in other expense areas, you may create a buffer in your budget to deal with rising health care expenses. 4. Forecast costs in annual spending. There are so many variables involved in estimating health care costs in retirement that trying to plan around a total lifetime budget can be overwhelming. Experts recommend that you focus on annual spending plans instead, provided that you understand costs will rise as you age. For seniors who are struggling to find cash in their retirement budgets to offset unexpected health care expenses, it may be a good idea to take stock right now of all your assets. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. You should review your life insurance policy from time to time and determine whether or not it’s still needed. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. If you own a life insurance policy you no longer need or can afford, you may be able to generate immediate cash to pay your health care expenses by selling that policy for immediate cash. To learn more about life settlements, visit www.LISA.org or call the LISA office today at 888-921-3793.

Alpine Manor is currently seeking the following position:

(NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES Speak with business owners about your experience as a customer, sharing insight about both good and bad experiences.

RESOLVE TO WEAR CLOTHES THAT FIT IN THE YEAR AHEAD Many people struggle to find the right size clothing, shoes and undergarments. It’s a situation that affects both men and women. Consider these facts: • Research by menswear retailer Jacamo found 22 percent of British men are wearing the wrong size clothes or shoes. • A recent international study done by Swiss lingerie company Triumph found that, of the 10,000 women polled, 64 percent are wearing the incorrect bra size. • The average shoe size is up about two sizes since the 1970s. Yet, at least one-third of men and half of women are buying the wrong size, according to Long Tall Sally, a U.K.-based apparel and footwear retailer that gets almost half its sales from North America. Many people today purchase their clothing off the rack and never step inside a tailor’s shop unless it is to have formal clothing adjusted for special occasions. People generally give little thought to taking out the measuring tape and getting a refresher on their measurements - despite changes in their body weights. Plus, many do not recheck their shoe sizes, likely because shoe stores are mostly self-service and the number of Brannock devices, or the standard foot measuring tool for the worlds footwear industry, are dwindling in retail centers.
