REMODELING HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Events could inspire adventurous Lambs looking to make a major career or personal move. But as always, get all the facts before rushing into any sort of deal or commitment. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) What seems to be a great opportunity could cause even usually practical Taureans to ignore their inner caution cues. Best to move carefully to avoid falling into unseen traps. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Need a holiday now that the seasonal festivities are behind you? Good idea. Plan to go someplace wonderful. You’ll return refreshed and more than ready for a new challenge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Progress continues to be made on that pesky workplace problem. Meanwhile, don’t assume a personal situation will work itself out. Best to get more involved earlier than later. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Catnaps are definitely recommended for Leos and Leonas who had been going at a hectic pace over the holidays. Adding relaxation time to your schedule helps restore your overdrawn energy reserves. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Sure, some of the new friends you made over the holidays might move out of your life at some point. But at least one might show significant “staying power” with some encouragement. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Encourage family members to join you in supporting a relative who could be facing a difficult emotional challenge in the New Year. Showing your love and concern helps keep his or her hopes up. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While a long-deferred decision suddenly might take on some urgency after news on a related matter, you still need to weigh all factors carefully before deciding one way or the other. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good time to reassess the earlier plan you made for the New Year. Some elements you felt you could depend on to make it work might no longer carry that assurance. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Forming a renewed connection with a former associate is only the first step toward working out your new plans. Be prepared for problems, and deal with them as soon as they arise. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A romantic situation that was going smoothly not too long ago might take a new turn. Be honest about your feelings before you decide whether to follow it or take another path. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The wise Pisces (that’s you, of course) will make sure everyone knows your plan to keep your options open and listen to all sides of the situation before making any decisions. BORN THIS WEEK: Your honest approach to life and living is always an inspiration for others fortunate enough to know you. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

ROOFING & SIDING

DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapes can save homeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertime but drop considerably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

REDUCE DISTRACTIONS BEHIND THE WHEEL Geico indicates that studies have shown people are limited in the amount of information they can process at any one time. Driving requires focus and an ability to react to a host of potential circumstances. Distractions compromise drivers’ ability to focus. Reducing distractions can considerably cut down on the number of motor vehicle accidents each year.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

Thank you to all the workers at Dollar General, Big M, the Post Office and C Bank, from Grandma Carol Creswell of Bloomfield. I want to thank the nice person at the Tim Hortons Spencerport drive For weeks, our local grocery store has posted that they were reducing hours, closing at 8 p.m. Well, ok, but on Saturday, Nov. 9, I pulled into the parking lot at 7:51, and the employees were already in their cars, pulling out of the mostly empty employee parking lot. I checked cellphone time. I thought there might be a few left inside, so I watched as another customer went to the door, which was already locked. She shook the door. No one came, so she walked back to her car, angrily yelling to me they were closed early. I pulled out of the parking lot at 7:55 and went to another town to buy what I needed, but I had driven about 5 miles out of my way to buy locally; I won’t make that mistake again. Management is failing when employees close store before posted hours, alienating customers. Don’t be fooled by all the advertisements for “free range” turkeys from a recently GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

thru. I was just grabbing some coffee and a hot cocoa for myself and my handicapped mother. It was Christmas Eve at about 11:30 am. When I pulled up to the window, the girl said the person ahead of me had paid for me and the car behind me. What a wonderful thing to do! I have never had someone do that for me. Your kindness will be paid forward. Thank you and Merry Christmas. - Sheila Ryan, Spencerport On 12/20/19 I was shopping at Tops Market in Batavia and got more restarted local operation - I drive by this farm Monday through Friday, and these birds are packed tighter than sardines. Most of them never venture outside. Even worse -- the barn doors remained open, with some birds outdoors due to crowding and others packed against open doors, even during our recent snow and extreme cold. I never see anyone around to monitor them. I fully support buying local, but these birds do not seem “as advertised” or well cared for. Drive by and see for yourselves before buying. This is shameful. I hate to rant; I really do but walking the canal from [local spot] to [local spot] should make all who do it rant in similar fashion. I’m a dog lover. I have one, always have, but to think of walking him, letting him poop on the canal path, or right next to it, and not picking it up and disposing of it properly is

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

than I planned on. So, I asked for some help getting the bags to my car. It was very busy in the store due to Christmas (no help showed up) when suddenly a handsome stranger asked if he could help me and I said “yes.” He ignored the cell phone call from my plumber who called on the way to my car and put all away all my groceries and shut the trunk. I blessed him and he wished me a Merry Christmas. Was this a young Santa Claus? I think so… This was so nice of a stranger. Don’t know his name, but he was so polite. He brightened this 87-year old’s day! absolutely unacceptable! What are you thinking when you allow your dog to do so before you just walk away and forget about it? Equally disgusting is the person(s) who actually picks it up, bags it and then leaves the filled bag along the path on a stone or under a bush. What are you thinking? Are you entitled? Do you think someone else will just come along and pick it up? You are responsible for your dog’s mess. I am not! We are getting to that time of year when the weather becomes freezing and harsh. Some people have been misinformed when it comes to dogs surviving outside during these times. They want to be warm and comfortable just like we do. Bring your pets inside, no matter what you use them for. No one around you wants to listen to them cry and bark all day and night because they’re hurting, freezing or going crazy in the tiny space they’re kept in 24/7.

Page 10

MaryAnn, you are a Christmas angel. The boys appreciated the clothes. Thank you for all you did! JH My boys and I would like to thank a generous “Christmas elf” for making our Christmas extra special this year. The Christmas spirit is alive and well, and my children had the most wonderful Christmas. Thank you, and God bless you! One

I work as a cashier, and today I had what was probably the worst experience since I started cashiering with a mother and father and their completely undisciplined child. The child seemed to be about seven or eight years old, so I’m not blaming him. The child shoved past me, tried to steal my personal property, attempted to press buttons on the cash register, and generally disturbed everyone in not only my line, but in my neighbors’ lines, as well. The parents pretty much just let their child run free. I sincerely hope that both are embarrassed about this. If you can’t control your child, then one of you should take him outside to your car. Please do not come back to my store, or if you do, please stay out of my line. Everyone in the vicinity was mortified by your child’s behavior.

Turmeric Can be Helpful for Arthritis Pain

Family Hair Care Our Staff: Santo Viola, Sue Ingalls, Sue Rouhana, Peter DeSalvo, Bonny Belknap, Janet Schuster, Debbie Harrington, Linda Leverenz

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 88 and have had osteoarthritis in my hands and knees since I was in my 50s. I began taking Tylenol and Advil for pain. But on a recommendation from a health food store clerk, I started taking turmeric. Since that first dose, I have never had to take any pain medication again. I also have not had a knee replacement. My specialist is very pleased with my condition, and encourages my use of turmeric. I plan to up the dose from 150 mg daily because of research that shows its benefits in avoiding Alzheimer’s disease. -- D.D.L. ANSWER: Turmeric has been shown to be helpful in some people with osteoarthritis, and is unlikely to have serious side effects; however, stomach upset is possible, and turmeric should be used with caution in people on warfarin or other anticoagulants. However, there is no good evidence showing that turmeric prevents or treats dementia.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been hearing a lot about making yogurt at home. Is homemade yogurt a recipe for food poisoning? -- H.C. ANSWER: Homemade yogurt is easy to make, can be more healthy than store-bought as it has very little sugar, and can be made very safely with minimal precautions. The key is to make sure the milk is fresh and sterile, then to carefully add in healthy bacteria. All you need to do is boil fresh milk to a bare simmer (to kill any unhealthy bacteria); cool it down to 100-110 F (37-42 C), which is an optimal temperature for growth of the healthy bacteria that help prevent the growth of unhealthy bacteria or yeast; stir in a few tablespoons of plain yogurt with active healthy bacterial cultures; and keep it in a warm place for six to 12 hours or so. You can use the yogurt you just made as the starter for the next batch. Add in some pureed fresh fruit, and you have a healthier, tastier and cheaper yogurt than you can buy at the store.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Book lovers also can channel their passions for the written word into a rewarding hobby. While reading might not seem like the most social activity, readers who want to use their love of books to grow their social networks can start a book club. People of all ages and backgrounds love to read, so starting a book club can be a great way to meet an array of people. Readers also can call their local libraries or schools to ask about reading programs for children. Volunteer to read to youngsters, helping the next generation discover the wonders of reading.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I take 40 mg of lisinopril for high blood pressure. One doctor told me to take a 40 mg tablet in the morning, while another said to take 20 mg in the morning and 20 mg in the evening. Will separating the dosage better control my blood pressure? On average, mine is 130/75. -- M.A.P. ANSWER: For lisinopril in particular, taking the medication twice daily showed a better reduction in blood pressure than once daily, according to a study performed last year. People who took lisinopril twice daily had about a 10-point systolic (4 point diastolic) improvement in BP control, so your blood pressure might be more like 120/71 if you started taking it in two doses, if you are similar to the subjects in the study (that sounds like a big drop to me, despite the study results). People who are doing just fine on once-daily lisinopril don’t need to change. Don’t make any changes in your medication without discussing it with your own doctor. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

Life insurance is a product few people want to think about. That’s perfectly understandable, as life insurance forces men and women to consider their own mortality. But life insurance is not something adults should avoid, especially if they have dependents. Many people should consider life insurance when estate planning so they can provide security for their loved ones. But life insurance is a purchase unlike any other, and people may be confused or intimidated when attempting to purchase life insurance policies. Deciding if you need coverage While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death. Buying life insurance Much like various other types of insurance, life insurance can be purchased from an insurance agent or via an insurance company’s website. When choosing a company from which to buy a life insurance policy, look for a company with a strong rating, as no one wants to end up being burned by a life insurance provider who goes out of business. Some people prefer to work with independent brokers who can share information about products from various providers rather than just the ones offered by the firm company-affiliated agents work for. Choosing coverage When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow taxfree so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments. When choosing how much coverage to purchase, it’s easy to go overboard and aim for as much as possible. However, many financial advisors suggest purchasing enough coverage to pay for funeral costs and a level of income replacement you can comfortably afford. If your spouse does not work, you should consider purchasing enough coverage so he or she can afford to pay the family’s day-to-day cost of living expenses. Life insurance merits serious consideration, and adults should do their homework and fully understand a policy before signing any contracts. MM15C708 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

On Jan. 8, 1835, President Andrew Jackson achieves his goal of entirely paying off the United States’ national debt. It was the only time in U.S. history that the national debt stood at zero, and it precipitated one of the worst financial crises in American history, the Panic of 1837. On Jan. 9, 1861, a Union merchant ship is fired upon as it tries to deliver supplies to Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, in the first exchange of shots between North and South. The shots were fired by gunner George E. Haynsworth, a cadet at The Citadel in Charleston. On Jan. 7, 1927, the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team travels west from Chicago to play their first game, in Hinckley, Illinois. Coach Abe Saperstein decided to promote his new team’s racial makeup by naming them after Harlem, the famous black neighborhood of New York City.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Protect your face. Skin dries with age, but men can take steps to protect their skin and keep it glowing as they grow older. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 and, ideally, one that includes moisturizer as well. Exposure to the sun without adequate protection can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles while increasing a man’s risk for skin cancer. Night creams that contain retinol can help smooth wrinkles and give skin a more even-toned look. Prescription night creams tend to be considerably more potent than over-the-counter alternatives.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Make an effort to reduce stress. Stress produces a host of negative side effects, some of which can indirectly affect appearance. Some people dealing with stress end up suffering from insomnia, which can contribute to bags under the eyes. Stress also can adversely affect hydration of the skin, contributing to dry skin. Stress also can contribute to hormonal imbalances that lead to skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. If stress is a problem, make a concerted effort to reduce it, even working with a physician to reduce stress when necessary. TRIVIA TEST By Fifi Rodriguez

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high.

Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

They Call Her “Mama Cindy” – Part One By Amanda Dudek

S

he’s the go-to person for those in need, especially deployed soldiers. Cynthia Strasburg of Hemlock, affectionately known as “Mama Cindy,” has sent 9,445 care packages to American troops over nearly 15 years, including soldiers in 20 countries, four active canine units and soldiers aboard the USS Harry S. Truman. Even so, Strasburg’s “Mama Cindy Soldier Program” all started with one soldier, one unit, one country, one wish. In 2005, Wendy Parcel, an officer in the National Guard, was deployed to Iraq. “She was a woman serving in a ‘man’s army’ going to a country that doesn’t respect women,” said Strasburg. “She had shipped out in January, and she sent me an email: ‘It is so cold over here; I wish I had brought some heavy socks or slippers.’” Strasburg went straight to the Ladies Auxiliary Post 282 and secured a donation to purchase heavy socks and slippers for Parcel’s entire unit, shipping her first package on Valentine’s Day 2005. However, Strasburg’s passion to care for our troops really began on 9/11. “I was working on a wedding,” she shared. “The maid of honor was flying down a week early for me to work on her dress.” Tragically, the young woman would never arrive; she was on the 9/11 flight that headed for the Pentagon. The airline approached Strasburg about making a teddy bear out of the uniform of one of the stewardesses who also died on that flight. Strasburg, who has made thousands of keepsake bears from the clothing of those who have passed away, was only too happy to oblige. When asked if her efforts could be promoted, Strasburg declined. “This is not a business,” she said. “This is one heart reaching to another, a healing process.”

The Mama Cindy Soldier Program quickly gained momentum. “In every package, I include a handwritten letter,” said Strasburg. “One soldier said to me, ‘I loved what was sent, but I would love having more letters.’” So, she wrote and mailed a letter to him every day for 30 days. “One soldier was shot 12 times,” she recalled. “He had received packages from me when he was overseas. When he was in recovery in Texas, I received an email from him asking me to write to him there.” Strasburg started writing him letters and sending him packages containing treats and things he might need in the hospital. The soldier was in dire straits, wondering if he would make it and why he lived. “I told him, ‘God has another mission for you,’” said Strasburg. “I crocheted a red-white-and-blue afghan and put it around me before sending it to him and his mother at the hospital. I put a note in it that said, ‘I am putting this around me so that you can feel the hugs of all the people waiting for you to come home.’” Another soldier, a Marine in Iraq, called Strasburg, exclaiming, “My gunny sergeant was shot, and I had to administer first aid, and I didn’t know if he was going to die or if I was going to die!” When the Marine asked her why she picked up the phone, Strasburg simply replied, “Because you needed someone to talk to. The phone will always be answered.”

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Yet another soldier emailed her from Afghanistan. “He said, ‘Mama Cindy, I need your help,’” said Strasburg. “‘An Afghan family’s vehicle exploded. Both parents died, and we have an infant and a toddler now. We have nothing here. Is there any way you can get us anything on this list?’” I had just delivered Christmas items to Dansville Hospital, and they gave me all these bags,” Strasburg explained. “With God as my witness, everything on that list was in those bags. The Lord provided before I even knew I had a place for it. I packaged it up, took it to the post office, mailed it that very day!” Another time, a Marine mom asked Strasburg for help sending packages to her son as the costs were becoming too difficult. Strasburg “adopted” the woman’s son and his entire unit of thirteen soldiers. “I got off the phone and went right to my knees in prayer and said, ‘Father, you gave me these Marines, and there is only $1.52 in the Soldier fund bank account. You’ll provide,’” she said. “I had to leave to do errands. When I came home, someone had put a check for $200 underneath my door. You can’t make this stuff up; it’s real!” When asked why she continues to do so much, Strasburg humbly responded, “It’s a labor of love. I send them a package from home so that maybe – just maybe – they will be able to finish their mission and come back home safely to their loved ones once again.’”

Every January, “Mama” Cindy Strasburg bakes for troops overseas!

“Mama” Cindy Strasburg wears her flag dress to accept a donation from the Livingston County CSEU WHIPH Organization.

“I do this year-round, and I am military approved by every branch, but I am not a 501c3.” She added, “I am one mama who believes you can make a difference in someone’s life. This will be my never-ending mission until they all come home or the Lord calls me home.”

LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME (NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise.

Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased. Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s: • Easily cut • Noncombustible, with a melting point of approximately 2,150° F • Fire resistant • Not likely to rot or promote the growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. For great soundproofing results, you can install the stone wool insulation in your home theater, basement, home office, laundry room, furnace room and even the washrooms. Its high-density and unique fiber structure reduces noise traveling from one room to another. Learn More: For further facts, visit www.rockwool.com/products/safensound.

Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
