HOME FIRE RISKS INCREASE AS WEATHER COOLS (NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes with the chance of severe weather and an increase in fire risks. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Local vendors will be familiar with the area and possibly even the location where the wedding will be held. That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with non-local vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have preexisting relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding day operations go smoothly.

Winter Emergency Kit Som etim es all the preparation in the w orld can’t prevent a w inter em ergency. If you find yourself stranded by the side of the road, a w inter survival kit can be very helpful. Include an ice scraper/brush, extra blankets or clothes - including hats and gloves - snacks and bottled w ater and a first aid kit. A sm all shovel can com e in handy if you get stuck and a bag of cat litter can be used to provide needed traction for your tires.

No one w ants to be out on the road during the first snow storm of the year only to discover certain com ponents are not w orking properly. Belts and hoses, w hile durable, can be put through strenuous conditions during the w inter m onths, so a close inspection of belts and hoses should be conducted in late fall. In addition, w indshield w ipers are especially im portant in w inter, w hen snow fall can drastically im pact visibility. You w ill w ant your w ipers w orking at full capacity once the w inter begins, so replace older w ipers (shelf life for standard w ipers is typically one year) and use a de-icing w indshield w asher fluid to m axim ize visibility. Another com ponent that m ust be inspected is your car’s battery. M any drivers have experienced a dead battery, w hich, in w arm w eather, is m ore of a nuisance than a health concern. In cold w eather, a dead battery can threaten your health if you find yourself stranded in cold w eather. Especially low tem peratures can com prom ise a battery’s pow er by as m uch as 50 percent, so have your battery inspected in late fall and replace it if need be.

ECO-FRIENDLY WAYS TO CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY Homemade meal: Take to cooking a meal at home for your valentine. Once you settle on his or her favorite foods, be sure to source out local, organic and free-range ingredients.

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You need to be certain that all the right conditions are in place before you take that first step. It can’t hurt to listen to good advice from those who have your best interests at heart. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Be careful not to get involved in other people’s disputes unless you know the facts behind the disagreements. That’s the best way to be assured of making wise and honest decisions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You still need to be careful about how you’re going to spend those energy reserves you finally got around to restoring. Best advice: Avoid overdoing it. Let things take their course. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspect continues to favor travel -- alone or with that special person. So if you’ve been putting off making those getaway plans, it’s still a good time to get started on them. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Those so-called golden opportunities that continue to dazzle the Lion still need to be carefully checked out. Be suspicious about anything that looks like the “perfect” prospect. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Changes at the workplace could make it more difficult to do things the way you prefer. But the wise Virgo who shows some flexibility could find it paying off in a big way. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might want to check out the explanation you were given for a sudden shift in your duties. There’s a possibility that you haven’t been told all the facts that you deserve to know. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Having confidence in your abilities is important, especially when you could be facing a new challenge, whether it’s in the workplace or in a personal relationship. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A new work-related opportunity might not be all that it seems. Before making any decisions, you might want to check with others who have had some experience in that area. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A situation involving someone close could benefit from your timely intervention. Avoid being judgmental. There’ll be plenty of time later for those “little talks” you like to have. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel could be a surprise element in that new project. Be prepared for other previously undisclosed aspects that also might come to light as you proceed with the work. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Try to balance your work-related responsibilities with the time you’re spending on your recently revived social life. An old friend might be planning to return after a long absence. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sensitivity makes you aware of the needs of others. Have you considered a career as a counselor? A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Feb. 8, 1587, after 19 years of imprisonment, Mary Queen of Scots is beheaded at Fotheringhay Castle in England for her complicity in a plot to murder Queen Elizabeth I. In 1542, while just six days old, Mary had ascended to the Scottish throne upon the death of her father, King James V.

Trees Not Tombstones: New Options For End-of-Life (NAPS)—The vast majority of Americans have not completed their end-of-life planning. In fact, over half of those age 45-plus have done no end-of-life planning at all, according to a recent survey conducted by Better Place Forests, the country’s first sustainable alternative to cemeteries for families that choose cremation. Better Place Forests hopes the idea of a beautiful, sustainable final resting place will encourage people to create those plans. Instead of tombstones, the company incorporates ashes into the base of beautiful trees in permanently protected forests. The company performs spreading ceremonies in the forest, where families can gather to say goodbye. Currently, there are two forests in California, in Point Arena in Mendocino County and in Santa Cruz, and the company plans to open more across the country.

* On Feb. 4, 1913, Rosa Parks is born Rosa Louise McCauley in Tuskegee, Alabama. Parks’ name has become synonymous with her refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus in 1955. * On Feb. 6, 1928, a woman calling herself Anastasia Tschaikovsky and claiming to be the youngest daughter of the murdered Russian czar Nicholas II Romanov arrives in New York City. It wasn’t until 1994 that Anastasia’s DNA showed her to be Franziska Schanzkowska, a Polish-German factory worker.

There is a growing trend toward greener burial options in the United States. According to the National Funeral Directors Association, nearly 54 percent of Americans are considering a green burial and 72 percent of cemeteries report an increased demand for green burials. Thousands of people have already reserved trees for themselves. “Making plans and establishing guidelines for the end of your life means that loved ones don’t have to guess about your wishes and you can give them the experience you’d like them to have when you pass,” explained Sandy Gibson, CEO of Better Place Forests. “At Better Place Forests, we talk to people every day who find peace in knowing they have created a beautiful experience for their loved ones by selecting a family tree.” Beyond providing a more beautiful final resting place, choosing a tree in one of these memorial forests means you are leaving a legacy of conservation. The company performs spreading ceremonies in the forest, where families can gather to say goodbye and continue to visit—a feature current cremation options can’t provide. The trusts also actively manage the land to ensure that it’s less susceptible to forest fires. They hire forestry experts to keep the trees healthy and the forests free of invasive species. In addition, more trees are planted in areas in need for every tree a customer chooses. Thousands of trees have already been planted in forests devastated by the California wildfires. One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charities is followed. When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Can Chocolate Worsen Irregular Heartbeat? ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 82 years old and still very active. I have had an irregular heartbeat for four years, and sometimes I feel lightheaded, dizzy or tired. I worry about it getting worse. Would you please give a detailed explanation about irregular heartbeat, including how or why it happens? What should I do to prevent it from getting worse? Is it life threatening? Will it become atrial fibrillation? Also, I am a chocolate lover and eat dark chocolate every day. But I was told that cocoa will make my irregular heartbeat worse and I should stop eating dark chocolate. Is that true? -- Q.Y. ANSWER: Everyone has irregular heartbeats from time-to-time. Early beats can come from electrically active areas anywhere in the heart, and an electrocardiogram can tell whether they are from the atria (the top chambers) or the ventricles (the bottom chambers) of the heart. An average person may have 500 or so of these a day -- some people have many more. Most are seldom aware of them. Having patients with this concern over and over during my career, I can reassure you that most cases turn out to be nothing to worry about. However, the fact that you are having symptoms, especially the lightheadedness and fatigue, is a warning sign, and I recommend you get an evaluation. Start with your regular medical provider, after which you may be referred to a cardiologist. The EKG in his or her office is a first step, but you may need a longer evaluation, such as wearing a 24-hour EKG (a Holter monitor) or newer technologies that allow longer readings. Atrial fibrillation is a concern, because most people will need treatment to reduce stroke risk or to return the rhythm to normal. Nevertheless, there are many other kinds of irregular heart rhythms, and you need a diagnosis first. If no cause is found, there are medications to reduce the irregularity, but they are seldom used. My experience is that when a person knows they are not dangerous, they can be lived with more easily. Chocolate does contain theobromide, a substance that can make the heart a little more irritable, but it takes a lot of chocolate to have a significant effect. It’s related to caffeine in coffee. Interestingly, a recent study found that chocolate lovers are less likely to develop atrial fibrillation, so the situation is more complex than just one chemical. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read that drinking warm lemon water with honey has many health benefits, partially because lemons are an alkaline food. Is this correct? -- B.W. ANSWER: I think I saw the same article. Lemon water may have some health benefits, but it is not an alkaline food, and drinking it has almost no impact on the acidity of your blood or urine, because the body’s buffer systems (the chemical processes used to keep the pH carefully regulated) are so effective. Lemons have a pH of about 2, so they are highly acidic. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) makes the urine more acidic. There is no consistent evidence that the foods we eat have a health benefit due solely to their effect on body pH. Many of the foods recommended for their supposed alkaline effects are indeed healthy, but for other, complex reasons apart from pH.

FOUR IDEAS FOR HEALTH CARE PLANNING IN RETIREMENT (NAPSI)—The Employee Benefit Research Institute estimates that a typical 65-year-old couple will spend a total of $265,000 in health care costs over the remainder of their lives. This staggering amount of money has the potential to derail even the best-laid retirement plans. Vanguard and Mercer recently developed a new framework, “Planning for Health Care Costs in Retirement,” that identifies practical tips for forecasting your health care expenses. Here are four top ideas: 1. Personalize health care costs. Start by understanding how your health history and current health status will influence expenses. Even your geographic location, marital status and age at retirement will impact your forecasts. 2. Plan for long-term care. This is a tough one to assess because half of retirees won’t even incur these costs, but on the other end of the spectrum, 15 percent of retirees will spend more than $250,000. Consider potential long-term care options, such as unpaid care from family and less-expensive available facilities. 3. Create a hedge in your budget for other expenses. Research shows that retirement spending in virtually all categories other than health care tends to decline with age. By forecasting steady spending in other expense areas, you may create a buffer in your budget to deal with rising health care expenses. 4. Forecast costs in annual spending. There are so many variables involved in estimating health care costs in retirement that trying to plan around a total lifetime budget can be overwhelming. Experts recommend that you focus on annual spending plans instead, provided that you understand costs will rise as you age. For seniors who are struggling to find cash in their retirement budgets to offset unexpected health care expenses, it may be a good idea to take stock right now of all your assets. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy.

WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

You should review your life insurance policy from time to time and determine whether or not it’s still needed. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. If you own a life insurance policy you no longer need or can afford, you may be able to generate immediate cash to pay your health care expenses by selling that policy for immediate cash. To learn more about life settlements, visit www.LISA.org or call the LISA office today at 888-921-3793.

(NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task.

ROOFING MATERIALS TRANSFORM THE LOOK AND FUNCTIONALITY OF A HOME Metal: Metal roofs are usually made from fully recyclable steel, aluminum or alloy, making them an eco-friendly choice. Metal roofs also reflect the sun’s rays and can be an energy-efficient option in hot climates.

How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment. You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also: • Easily cut • Noncombustible

Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money.

• Excellent for sound absorbency • Not likely to rot or promote growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product. directionals are optional, but stop signs are not. Also, while waiting to go over the one bridge we have, don’t park across people’s driveways. Finally, to those who buy their coffee at the little shop in the village, stop parking where it is not a parking spot, so that anyone handicapped can’t enter other businesses. Can any of you be considerate?

all. Maybe this is one reason why so many restaurants and businesses are going under. The added costs to do any kind of business in New York State are outrageous! Add to this the lack of any customer service, and it would equal disaster and fewer jobs. Minimum wage goes up; then all prices go up, so no one gains anything in the end. Having no state income tax would help.

Far too many chain restaurants are forgetting about good customer service, i.e. good wait staff etiquette, and worrying about profit over customers. If you’ve ever learned economics in school, when they used to actually teach basic life skills as part of the regular curriculum, you would have learned that without customers to serve, you have no money, and no profit is made at

Please, please, please, if you put garbage out for collection, be considerate of your neighbors and do your best to make sure your bins don’t tip! Every time garbage day is windy, my yard ends up strewn with wind-blown trash and recycling. If people simply took a little more care with how they fill and place their bins, I wouldn’t be stuck picking up and disposing of someone else’s garbage.

Weeks before Christmas, I had put up my Christmas lights on my house on a typical village street. At dark, I went outside and stood on the sidewalk, inspecting the joy when I heard footfalls in the snow on the street and saw that a woman was jogging toward me. Simple courtesy called for some kind of acknowledgment, and I smiled and said hello, not thinking that a man standing on a sidewalk at dusk could appear sketchy. Immediately, she got an unpleasant look, muttered something unpleasant and sprinted away down the street. I felt bad instantly for making her uncomfortable. I understand, and her reaction wasn’t wrong, but it’s a shame that a simple smile and hello can cause fear or discomfort. The world got a little colder for me that day.

Canines Employeed to Keep VA Drug-free VA Finger Lakes Healthcare System Implements Canine Program for Narcotics Detection By Amanda Dudek

V

A Finger Lakes Healthcare System Police Department (Bath and Canandaigua VA Medical Centers) have invested in and implemented a canine program for narcotics detection to keep patients and visitors safe. Acting Chief for Canandaigua/Bath/ Rochester VA Police, Kent Strege along with Sergeant Christopher Hamilton and Canine Sampson in Canandaigua and Lieutenant Jeffrey Mastin and Canine George in Bath currently work to protect Veterans from illicit substances at their VA Medical Center campuses, both comprised of many acres. Their efforts have been successful in more ways than one. Canines have been used by police in narcotics detection because not only is it a psychological deterrent, but a dog’s sense of smell can scan a room for illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia quicker than the police can search a room for these items. “The thought of a Canine Program started back in 2014 when it was a relatively newer program within VA nationwide,” explained Sergeant Christopher Hamilton, Chief Canine Handler for Canine Sampson. “In 2016, we started the program in Canandaigua.” The program was found to be such a “useful and successful tool” that it was implemented at the VA Medical Center in Bath, as well. The two Labrador retriever dogs Sampson (4 years old) at Canandaigua VA and George (18 months old) at Bath VA are narcotics detection certified, receive ongoing monthly training and annual certification and each have their own special vehicle for transportation. Sampson has responded to over 60 narcotics related police calls at VA medical centers State-wide and has had 14 finds for substance or drug paraphernalia. George who is just getting started has had three finds since joining VA. Both dogs will help keep the environments safe at both VA medical centers for in-patient and out-patient Veterans, visitors and employees. “The finds have given us either illicit product or paraphernalia or something along those lines,” said Hamilton. “I think the biggest thing is that it is a great visual deterrent, and that is a huge factor.” The benefit of this is readily realized. “It is an invaluable tool when you talk about the safety of the Veterans on our campuses,” stated Strege. “Several Veterans are recovering from illicit drug use. We want Veterans to come to VA who want the necessary help to beat that substance, and having such substances around could trigger a relapse.” Sergeant Chris Hamilton at Rochester Calkins VA Clinic with Sampson.

However, both Strege and Hamilton agree that the value of the canine program extends beyond the clear benefit of keeping our VA locations safe from substance abuse. “The reaction from Veterans has been very positive,” shared Hamilton. “They always seem to be happy to see me and the dog walking the hallway.” Sergeant Hamilton feels that Sampson, a black lab, is often a comforting presence to the Veterans.

pet... it can turn a bad day into a good day. That has been very effective for us, too.” Sergeant Hamilton describes the dogs as “multipurpose” in that they are excellent at finding illicit substances and discouraging their presence while also having a calming effect on those around them, stating, “Sampson is a perfect fit in our department.” The safety of Veterans is the priority of the VA canine program, a cause that the officers hold close to their hearts. “All of the officers in our department are Veterans,” shared Strege and Hamilton. “We chose this career field because we have a passion for this. Our goal is to serve our Veterans, and being one gives us an automatic rapport with them. We are able to calm situations relatively quickly.”

Lieutenant Jeffrey Mastin with George at the Bath VA Medical Center.

Acting Chief Strege and Sergeant Hamilton also encourage area communities to support their work by supporting Veterans. “Any support the public gives us, especially as law enforcement officers, we appreciate, and we encourage them to support our Veterans in any way that aids in creating a safe environment and helps them have a safe visit.” There are many ways to help support Veterans. 10% OFF New Clients Only TIPS FOR EASY SNOW REMOVAL (NAPSI)—It’s the heart of winter, which means plenty of snow removal is in your future. Poorly maintained equipment and using the wrong clearing techniques can make shoveling or blowing your driveway and walkways a chore. Follow the tips below to make snow removal as easy as possible. Start Early and Shovel Often It’s easier to shovel an inch or two of fresh snow than half a foot of snow that’s densely packed. Shovel first thing in the morning and, if it continues to snow, go out every couple of hours to clear a few inches at various points throughout the day. Maintain Your Equipment If you didn’t perform maintenance on your snowblower before the winter season, it’s not too late. On gasoline-powered machines, check the oil level before each use. Inspect and change damaged or worn spark plugs, belts and shave plates. On all snowblowers, be sure to maintain proper tire pressure. After you’ve finished for the day, run the machine for a minute or so to clear out snow.

Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

Shovel the Right Way Shoveling to remove snow can be hard work, so protect your body and make the job a bit easier by pushing the snow instead of lifting it. To prevent aches and pains, keep your feet hip-width apart, bend your knees, keep your back straight and avoid twisting your torso if you must lift the snow. Finally, spray WD-40 Multi-Use Product on the shovel blade to prevent snow from sticking to it for easier transfer of snow from sidewalks and driveways. INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS

SrCenter@henrietta.org or 334-4030 Feb. 3-7, 2020 • Lunch Entrees

(NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children.

Monday: Pub Burger Tuesday: Ham, Turkey, Roast Beef Sandwich Wednesday: Macaroni & Cheese

Thursday: No Meal Served Friday: Braised Pork Chop

One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools.

STAY SAFE AND WARM DURING W INTER W ORKOUTS Layer correctly. Layering has long been a reliable w ay to beat the cold w hen temperatures are at their low est. But layering must be done correctly to be effective. W hen choosing your w orkout gear, choose an inner layer that w ill move moisture aw ay from your skin. Cotton retains moisture, and that means your sw eat w ill cling to your body and make you feel cold. Once you find a shirt made w ith moisture-w icking material to w ear against your skin, look for a second layer that also w icks moisture so you can more effectively control your body temperature. Your outer layer should be capable of handling the elements, so look for something that is w aterproof and w ind-resistant.

The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.

LEARN HOW TO WRITE A CLASSIC LOVE LETTER Today’s digital world has given rise to fast, stinted communications. According to the Pew Research Center, texting is the most widely used smartphone app, with 97 percent of Americans using it at least once a day. Across the globe, 8.3 trillion text messages are sent each year. That translates to roughly 16 million messages per minute. In addition to text messaging, social media posts are generally concise and short on depth. The written form of communication has changed dramatically in the last decade, as letter-writing and other forms of prose have all but faded away. But come Valentine’s Day, it can be special to dust off that pen and paper to express oneself via the written word in the name of love. Love letters are cherished keepsakes that can be kept for years. Such couples can illustrate a couple’s present-day love for one another and shed insight on their relationship years later. Here are some steps for writing a romantic love letter or note. • Jot down ideas and inspiration. Make a list of attributes and qualities in a spouse or romantic interest that you would like to highlight. Write down phrases and terms that come to mind. These words can serve as the foundation for the letter. • Categorize your thoughts into three areas. Jot down things that you like and love about the person, things that the person may do for you or your family that you appreciate, and various memories from throughout the years. • Write what you know. Do not feel pressured to make this letter more complicated than it has to be. The words will come when you write from the heart. While you can use other letters to spur ideas, do not lose your voice or try to mimic someone else’s work. • Make the letter personal and specific. Small details are important and make love letters more meaningful. Such details illustrate to a significant other that this letter was specifically written with them in mind. • Disregard length. The letter does not have to be a certain length. Whether it is a paragraph or several pages, the letter will be a successs if it says what you want to express. It doesn’t have to be long if that’s not your style. Writing a love letter can be a wonderful way to express romantic sentiments this Valentine’s Day. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

Full-time Meat Cutter Position Interested person must be at least 18 years of age. Meat cutter experience preferred, but will train the right person. Must be customer service oriented, be able to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, be a team player, good communicator, and willing to learn new skills.

Upon retiring, many newly minted retirees find themselves looking for ways to fill their free time. Hobbies may not take up too much time, and travel can stretch retirees’ budgets. One way that retirees can make great use of their free time and make a little extra money is to find part-time employment. Part-time jobs can help retirees maintain their connections with their communities, whether it’s their professional community or the community in which they live, while also providing a sense of purpose.

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Women had another successful year in 2015. According to the Fortune 500 list, 2015 tied the record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America’s largest companies by revenue. Twenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made the list. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center.

DID YOU KNOW? In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday.

A new year often sparks change. Many people aspire to change jobs at the dawn of a new year, and such changes are more frequent than one might think.

EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE (NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities. Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify.

Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits. Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment. For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working. “It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.” It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.” Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts. “I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.” To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www.choosework.ssa.gov. Page 32
